IBC Solar celebrates the 40th year of the company's history
Founder and Managing Director Udo Möhrstedt recalls the beginnings
40 years ago you founded IBC Solar in Bad Staffelstein
What reasons prompted you to enter this new industry back then
I worked for the battery company Varta in Hanover
There I experienced the oil crisis in 1973
That was the time when the first report by Dennis Meadows and the Clube of Rome appeared: "The Limits to Growth"
Herbert Gruhl's "A planet is being plundered" was also published at that time
That was the reason for me to take action myself
I was responsible for development cooperation with the European automotive industry
I was also involved in the electrification of mobile devices such as lawnmowers
I came to Moll Batterien in Bad Staffelstein
See also: Varta opens new lithium-ion cell factory at the Nördlingen site
In 1982 there were actually no solar modules yet
certainly no solar industry and certainly only a few solar customers
I had already used the first solar module at Varta
there were already pilot lines from Siemens and AEG for the production of solar modules that were promoted by the Ministry of Economics
the modules produced at that time were only used for subsidised pilot projects
I got a tip that Kyocera had set up a production facility for polycrystalline solar modules in Japan
That's how International Battery Consulting (IBC) became IBC Solar
Because you could buy these modules with 36 cells
The charge controllers for the lead batteries
So I had a regulator developed here in Bad Staffelstein by an electrical engineer from the neighbourhood
We sold a total of around 3,500 charge controllers
the Steca company came along with its own charge controllers; the devices were cheaper and were therefore bought
It took a while for us to grow and hire people
What milestones do you remember most fondly
The first milestone was the first PV symposium in Bad Staffelstein, which I organised with the East Bavarian Technology Transfer Centre (Otti) from Regensburg and with the participation of Professor Götzberger from Fraunhofer ISE at Kloster Banz here in Bad Staffelstein
Because a few days later the accident in Chernobyl happened
about solar cells on car roofs to air-condition the interior
That's why representatives of the automobile industry were also there
In 1990 we were already 15 people and had a turnover of 6.8 million German marks (about 6.2 million euros in today’s prices)
Until 1990 we had only built off-grid plants
until then it was not allowed to feed into the grid
It was not until the Feed-in Act was passed in the Bundestag that it was possible to feed solar power into the grid
This was followed by the 1,000 Roofs Programme
which was expanded to a total of 2,250 roofs through reunification
This interview was conducted and abridged by Heiko Schwarzburger

Bavarian bishops walk in a procession to the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers near Bad Staffelstein
A decree by the German bishops' conference warns that German Catholics who do not pay a state church tax will be denied sacraments
Germany's bishops have a clear message for the country's 25 million Catholics: The road to heaven requires more than faith and good intentions; it requires tax payments
German bishops warned that if members of the Catholic Church don't pay the country's church tax
they'll be denied the sacraments — including baptisms
Germany is one of the few countries where the state collects a special levy from tax-registered believers and hands it over to three organized faiths
Protestants and Jews pay a surcharge of up to 9 percent on their income
The Catholic Church alone received some $6.5 billion in 2011
the president of the German bishops' conference
said that not paying taxes for the church is a grave offense
and that sacraments will be banned for those who distance themselves from the church
the church is a community of faith which coexists alongside the legal system," Zollitsch said
Many conservatives and progressives are up in arms
bells announce Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Berlin's Mitte district
A few elderly women walk through the large Gothic doorway
Some young couples with children park their bikes in the courtyard
Not everyone is willing to talk about the bishops' decree
"I think it is absolutely not acceptable; if you want to have sacraments
you can get them if you pay taxes or not."
The middle-aged man says the church does a lot of good work for the poor and society
But he cannot accept the ban on sacraments
you have not the right to have a Christian funeral
But it has unleashed a debate even among church law experts
some of whom say it raises very serious questions about justice toward the faithful
As church historian Carsten Frerk points out
setting conditions on church membership is against the church's own legal code
"The church law itself has no idea of separation from the church," Frerk says
"You cannot go out of the church under Catholic Church law
spokesman for the grass-roots Catholic organization We Are Church
says the bishops' decree carries a threatening message that raises the specter of the grave sin of heresy
"It doesn't use the word 'excommunication' — and actually it is not excommunication — but in fact it is like an excommunication," Weisner says
referring to official expulsion from the church
The bishops issued their decree as church defections are growing
when the clerical sex abuse scandal exploded in Germany
Church statistics show that only 13 percent of Germany's Catholics attend Mass weekly
the majority of those who are observant criticize the church leadership
"We need and we ask for more transparency and more participation in the decision-making process," he says
"It can't be the case that only the bishop is deciding which parish will get money and which parish will get a new church."
many German Catholics are starting to resist what they see as taxation without representation

German lead-acid battery maker Moll Batterien has opened insolvency proceedings after 75 years of operation due to the “sudden

A company statement read: “The economic conditions caused by the Corona crisis and the general production stop in the automotive industry has forced this step
“The Corona crisis has far-reaching consequences for the whole automotive industry
it is not possible to predict whether and when sales will recover
“It is highly probable that even if automobile production resumes

The Akkumulatorenfabrik MOLL GmbH + Co KG lacks the financial means to bridge such a long period of time.”
The firm’s plant in Bad Staffelstein has been closed a week before the insolvancy filing
especially for our employees,” said the company’s managing partner Gertrud Moll-Möhrstedt
“Our top priority and concern is now their social security.
we expect that insolvency proceedings will resume production if the automotive industry ends its production stop in time.”
Moll had invested more than €15 million ($16 million) in the expansion of its production capacities over the past six years
with the support of its two foreign partners
Moll formed a strategic partnership with the Chaowei group with the announcement it would “provide the right conditions for a medium-sized family business to meet the challenges posed by a global economy”.
The company’s statement also read: “The focus of sales is the Volkswagen Group
the last financial year 2019 ended with a balanced result
“Due to the expansion of production and the establishment of the business model with lithium batteries
MOLL had to pre-finance considerable operating funds in the past few months

BAD STAFFELSTEIN, Germany — Angela Merkel’s conservative Bavarian allies fêted hardline Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán as the guardian of the EU’s external borders — a direct rebuke of the chancellor and her refugee policy
“We need Hungary to secure the outer borders of the EU,” Seehofer told a joint news conference with Orbán
“We’re now in a state of mind without rules
without system and without order because of a German decision,” said Seehofer
speaking of the need to restore order and open both in his admiration of Orbán for “striving to achieve this goal” and his criticism towards Merkel
Officials in Berlin were seething with anger
with one calling the CSU leader’s remarks “outrageous.”
party officials portrayed Orbán’s visit to Bavaria as “backstabbing” by the CSU
Germany reinstated border controls and called on its EU partners to take in a bigger share of refugees
Orbán has also publicly attacked Merkel’s migrant policy
The CSU’s invitation was perceived as a slap in the face for Merkel and her policy of Willkommenskultur
which briefly boosted Germany’s international image but stoked resistance from local German officials already overwhelmed by the cost of providing the newcomers with housing
But in the Bavarian monastery-turned-congress center, where a wooden crucifix still hangs in every room, warnings from Hungary and other Eastern European countries that Christian culture is at risk from the mostly Muslim migrants struck a chord
Bavaria’s location in the south east of Germany makes it the main entry point for migrants coming up from the Mediterranean and the Balkans. At first, locals in Munich flocked to the central railway station to welcome the refugees in a show of efficient German hospitality
But the “September fairytale,” as it became known
CSU officials gathering in Bad Staffelstein complained privately that Merkel’s approach was divorced from reality and the government should instead stem the flow of refugees by imposing strict border controls and an upper limit across the EU
“We are the ones who guard the southern border of Bavaria” — Viktor Orbán
Australia — basically everyone else — does that,” Thomas Kreuzer
head of the CSU faction in the Bavarian state government
“Neither Germany nor Europe will be able to cope with an unlimited
uncontrolled influx of refugees in the long term.”
“I would like to thank our Bavarian friends for their support,” Orbán said
“It was my duty to come here … We are the ones who guard the southern border of Bavaria.”
a few dozen protesters denounced the Hungarian leader for his migration policies and Seehofer for hosting his visit
“A common European solution is being sabotaged by this act of today,” said Margarete Bause
head of the opposition Greens in the Bavarian state Parliament
next to a placard showing a barbed-wire fence which asked: “Mr

The Sportlifestyle company PUMA announced at its stakeholder meeting “Talks at Banz” that it will sign the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Agreement set up by global trade union IndustryAll this week to ensure that the company’s six supplier factories in Bangladesh adhere to high standards of social and working conditions
ensuring the safety and health of its workers
PUMA’s Chief Commercial Officer Stefano Caroti pointed out that through signing the agreement PUMA’s supplier factories will have to undergo independent safety inspections and audit reports will be made public
Carrying out repairs and renovations that result from the independent inspections are mandatory for the supplier
“The agreement requires PUMA to underwrite the costs and to cut off business with any factory that refuses to make necessary safety upgrades
It gives workers and their unions a role in the process according to the non-profit Worker Rights Consortium,” said Caroti at PUMA’s stakeholder meeting at the Banz monastery in Bad Staffelstein in front of 67 participants from non-governmental organizations
PUMA sources 11% of its apparel products from six supplier factories in Bangladesh
All PUMA suppliers in Bangladesh were A to B+-rated after having been audited by PUMA’s audit team
PUMA has defined clear mandatory standards for all suppliers in the “PUMA.Safe Handbook of Occupational Health and Safety,” which includes specifications on working safety as well as the architecture and structural engineering aspects of their buildings (See Chapter 9 on about.puma.com/en/Sustainability/Codes-and-Handbooks)
Following the building collapse in Bangladesh in April
we immediately contacted all PUMA suppliers to receive confirmation from the suppliers that they are following these regulations and to request the structural engineering certificates for all buildings
Future audits of supplier factories will be carried out with a renewed focus on these aspects
A special guest at PUMA’s 10th annual stakeholder meeting – that focussed on the question “How to let Consumers live and support Sustainability” – was Nazma Akter
President of the Bangladesh Combined Garment Workers Federation and a former child worker in an apparel factory
who elaborated on the working conditions in Bangladesh supplier factories and called upon PUMA to increase the sourcing volumes from Bangladesh in order to support the important apparel industry of the country
PUMA’s stakeholder meeting took place from June 3 to 4
