2025 9:15 AM EDTPopular discount grocery chain Aldi has big plans to save consumers money in 2025 — and beyond
The grocer, known for carrying store brands of popular products to keep costs down, is rapidly expanding. According to The Street, Aldi recently opened its first locations in the Las Vegas area
Aldi CEO Jason Hart spoke about the upside of bring Aldi to Vegas — and other areas
“Shoppers shouldn’t have to compromise on quality to save money
they don’t have to," Hart said
households and counting trusting our products and low prices
we’re growing rapidly from coast to coast
Opening stores in Las Vegas gives us the opportunity for continued growth in this exciting market and allows us to bring an affordable and fun grocery experience to shoppers nationwide."
Back in February, Aldi announced its plan to open more than 225 stores in 2025 alone
The chain has acquired Southeastern Grocers
which is responsible for stores like Winn-Dixie
"Converting the remaining locations to the Aldi format is critically important to our nationwide commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with quality groceries for less
As shoppers continue to feel sticker shock at the checkout
the value Aldi delivers can’t be beat," he added

The professional social network has experienced a surge in phishing attacks as criminal gangs target its users
LinkedIn has become the most targeted website for phishing attacks
The business social network now accounts for more than half of all phishing-related attacks globally
a surge which has likely been driven by the so-called ‘great resignation’
which has seen many workers looking for new jobs
as well as the large amount of personal information LinkedIn users share publicly
New research conducted by the cybersecurity company Check Point shows that fake LinkedIn details were used in 52% of phishing attacks detected in the first quarter of 2022
This is up from 8% in the previous quarter
In an example of a phishing attack shared by Check Point
an email with ‘LinkedIn’ in the subject email sent to a potential victim contained a link which directed the user to a fraudulent LinkedIn login page
The malicious link required the user to enter the username and password for their genuine LinkedIn account
Other examples also include emails with targeted subject descriptions telling the potential victim that they have appeared in multiple searches
or that their profile matches a particular job.
This dramatic increase in phishing-related attacks using LinkedIn accounts is likely to be linked to the ‘great resignation’ phenomenon observed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic
research manager at Check Point. This has seen higher than usual staff turnover across many companies as workers look for new roles
“People are now more inclined to look at external opportunities and LinkedIn is a major place for this," Dembinsky says
People are also comfortable connecting with strangers on LinkedIn to build their professional networks
“LinkedIn is a platform in which people are used to having unknown people approach them
which provides the attackers good grounds to lure victims,” he explains.
they could potentially use the profiles for more sophisticated social engineering against other targets
but the main goal would still be to sell or use the credentials for password re-use in other services.”
The value of the information people share publicly about themselves on the professional social network has also piqued the interest of cybercriminals. Last year, it was revealed that LinkedIn suffered at least two instances of malicious web scraping
when more than a billion user records were offered for sale on the dark web.
This week a court in the US reaffirmed that this kind of web scraping is not illegal. The ruling by the US Ninth Circuit of Appeals came in a case bought by LinkedIn against Hiq Labs
a company it says has been scraping LinkedIn data to use for its own research
LinkedIn had not responded to Tech Monitor's request for comment at the time of publication.
Dembinsky says tech leaders should encourage the likes of multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect organisations and staff from falling victim to phishing
“Our main advice to protect yourself and your business from such attacks is to encourage the use of MFA and avoid clicking on links,” he says
“It would always be preferable to log in directly to the website
as any notification sent by email would usually also be available on the website itself.”

Shein has become the most-installed shopping app in America
Shein may have the fast-fashion market cornered
but a growing number of its customers are calling for increased accountability from the company as indie designers continue to accuse it of ripping off their work
one that's particularly popular with Generation Z
But its growth has not been without controversy. In addition to the steep environmental cost associated with fast fashion
Shein is also routinely criticized for copying designs from indie designers
The designer behind Elexiay, a Black-owned fashion brand, said on Twitter last week that Shein had copied the design of its Amelia top
a crochet sweater that's handmade in Nigeria and costs $330
mass-produced in the nearly identical color scheme
was sold for $17 until it was removed from the website
"Spent hours designing and brainstorming this design and it takes days to crochet each sweater
It's quite disheartening to see my hard work reduced to a machine made copy," the designer wrote on Twitter
Tonight I feel crushed, @SHEIN_official has stolen my Amelia sweater design.Spent hours designing and brainstorming this design and it takes days to crochet each sweater. It’s quite disheartening to see my hard work reduced to a machine made copy. 💔 pic.twitter.com/vLagM3WiKq
It's a sentiment other creators have echoed. Reclamare PH, another crochet designer, said on Instagram that Shein had copied one of its pieces and asked followers to boycott the company. The designer behind Sincerely RIA, a brand inspired by Fulani culture, tweeted last month that Shein had copied the design of a dress and had even "[stolen] the brand's aesthetic."
It's not just clothes. Artists have reported having their original works reproduced without permission, as have designers who create enamel pins and earrings
Shein did not respond to multiple requests for comment
A marketing agency that works with the brand also did not return requests for comment
copyright law can leave little protection for creators
For starters, the law doesn't allow companies to copyright "useful things, at least not in their entirety," Julie Zerbo, the lawyer and journalist behind The Fashion Law blog
that means a designer is unable to claim broad protections for articles of clothing that serve a basic function
designers could not claim protection for any and all sweaters simply because they happen to make sweaters
But they can copyright the creative aspects of their work that make it different from the norm
that's because it is — even for the professionals
copyright law forces a brand that wants to claim protection to show the creative elements of this larger garment and separate them out," Zerbo said
"It makes for a pretty messy and not straightforward reality
it's perfectly legal to knock off a dress design."
It's in this gray area that fast-fashion brands often thrive
Zerbo said they often copy "just enough" so that the final result is recognizable without copying anything that's trademarked or otherwise legally protected
"They do a pretty good job of walking that line," Zerbo said
"And that allows them to operate in this space doing exactly what it is that they're meant to do
which is take other trends that are on the runway or elsewhere and reproduce them at a lower cost."
indie brands aren't completely without options
Sending a cease-and-desist letter is a go-to move
and the brands can also work to reach an agreement outside of court; these settlements can involve the offending companies agreeing to pull the pieces from their store and paying the original designer a monetary settlement
It's a polarizing topic: Some commenters are staunch defenders of Shein
arguing that the average shopper can't be expected to spend hundreds on a single garment when a vastly cheaper option is available
Instagram and other platforms to raise awareness
which critics of Shein said can lead to more customers for the original creators as well as increased demands for change
the "boycottShein" hashtag has been viewed upward of 3 million times
Since big brands rely on online popularity to stay relevant
indie designers and their supporters are hoping hashtags could be an underdog's most powerful weapon

Instagram users will no longer have to include their pronouns in the “bio” portion of their profile
as the app now features its own section dedicated to them
There is now a drop down box that allows people to choose pronouns and up to four can be selected
including: “per,” “she,” they,” “he,” and more
Add pronouns to your profile ✨The new field is available in a few countries, with plans for more. pic.twitter.com/02HNSqc04R
If you do not see your pronouns listed, you have the option of submitting a request for them through Instagram’s Help Center
the inclusion of preferred pronouns in people’s bios have become a common practice
But since there was no slot dedicated to it
users would have to place them in the 150-character box
Social media users are glad to see companies evolving with their needs of its supporters
In a May 12 article for UK Glamour
social media director Chloe Lewis wrote about why it was important for cisgendered people to showcase their pronouns
the more it [normalizes] the practice of asking pronouns and not assuming gender; which in turn takes away the power from those who don’t respect the right of people to choose what they prefer to be called.”
Use of Instagram’s new feature is optional
It is also not available in all countries yet
but the platform has plans of expanding it to more users across the globe
You also have the choice of only showing your pronouns to people who follow you on Instagram
