Andrew R. Barleben, a renowned vascular surgeon and researcher, is the new director of the Aortic Center at UC Davis Health
Before moving to UC Davis, Barleben was on faculty in UC San Diego’s Department of Surgery and at the VA Medical Center-San Diego. At UC San Diego, he was co-director of the Center for Medical Device Engineering and Biomechanics (CMDEB)
“I am confident he will continue to elevate the Aortic Center
which has already become one of the top referral centers for complex aortic reconstructions in Northern California.”
“I am thrilled to join the UC Davis community to lead and collaborate with the team at the Aortic Center
building a future on its solid foundation,” said Barleben
“I am looking forward to continuing to advance our mission of providing world-class clinical care for people with aortic diseases
We look forward to partnering with Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery to provide pioneering open and minimally invasive stenting or robotic surgical options for aortic disease from the aortic valve down.”
Barleben collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to create a special FDA-approved trial to custom-build patient-specific stent grafts to repair thoracoabdominal aneurysms
He also worked on industry-sponsored trials in the aortic arch and created custom options for patients in a compassionate use authorization for patients with ascending and aortic arch disease that had no open or trial-based options.
Barleben also collaborated with the UCSD bioengineering faculty on several research projects
They looked at 3D printing patient-specific aneurysms that failed traditional treatment
as well as studying computed flow dynamic modeling of arterial occlusive disease and endoleaks after abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs
Barleben also developed and assessed custom-made 3D-printed flow models
a unique way to treat complex aortic arch pathology
for which he plans to pursue an FDA-approved trial.
Barleben plans to develop similar collaborations at UC Davis.

Building on nearly two decades of experience at Philips where he most recently served as Global Business Process Owner and previously held leadership roles including VP of Procurement and Head of Procurement Governance, e-bike maker Cowboy has seemingly scooped up a win with Oliver Barleben
in his new role Barleben will be heading up any and all global supply chain functions at Cowboy
“I’m honoured to be appointed Cowboy’s Chief Supply Chain Officer and look forward to collaborating with our leadership team to advance our efforts in strengthening our supply chain operational excellence
I am very impressed with Cowboy’s automotive mindset and process-driven execution in engineering
As is quite typical with the announcement of a senior-level executive
a delay in releasing the news to the wider public
according to Barleben’s Linkedin profile he joined the company in November of last year which means he could very well have been involved in the tail end of Cowboy’s B Corp certification
a title the company achieved in December of 2022 and can lay first to in the e-bike industry
Cowboy CEO and co-founder Adrien Roose said
“Cowboy has completely reimagined what an e-bike can be
With this commitment to innovation and quality
it is essential to work with talent at Oliver’s level as we step into the next phase of maturity in our business
His vast expertise makes him the right leader at the right time
further setting us apart from other operators.”
With Spring right around the corner, often a time for bicycle manufacturers to roll out their latest and greatest, it should be interesting to see what Cowboy, and by default, Barleben has in store for us in the coming weeks and months. If Estonian competitor Ampler’s rollout of a range of new colours is any benchmark
let's see what the Belgian cattlemen have stocked in the corral

Excavations in the middle Elbe valley near Magdeburg
have revealed significant archaeological findings spanning from the Middle Pleistocene to the modern era
The Barleben-Adamsee gravel quarry has been particularly fruitful
uncovering relics dating back tens of thousands of years
The gravel accumulation in the Adamsee lake area near Barleben has occurred over millennia
making it a rich source of archaeological material
due to the extraction process using bucket dredgers below the water table
direct observation of the stratigraphic layers is not feasible
dating of the finds relies on the shape of tools or scientific methods like radiocarbon dating
with particular recognition given to Uwe Beye for his contributions to the discoveries at the Barleben-Adamsee quarry
Among the finds are approximately 180 flint artifacts
One notable discovery is a 41.8-centimeter-long point crafted from a bovine rib
dated to around 32,000 to 33,000 years ago
making it one of the oldest polished bone tools found in Central Germany
suggesting the presence of early modern humans as their creators
This challenges previous associations of leaf points with Neanderthals
A particularly intriguing find is the discovery of five fragments of turtle shells
These fragments belong to the European freshwater turtle
suggesting that these creatures existed during the Weichselian glaciation
a period when much of Central Europe was covered in ice
This unexpected dating raises questions about the origin of the turtles
with comparisons drawn to ethnographic and historical evidence suggesting that Ice Age hunters
including Neanderthals or early modern humans
might have transported these reptiles to colder regions
The discovery of these remains suggests that early humans or Neanderthals may have adapted to changing environments by exploiting available resources

About one year after the takeover by the Japanese Horiba Group
the battery and fuel cell specialist Horiba FuelCon is expanding its production site in Barleben
approximately 30 million euros are to be invested in a new building in the Ostfalen Technology Park in Barleben
increasing the number of employees from the current 110 to 360
The new building will strengthen the company’s role as a global competence center within the Horiba Group and also advance the planned e-mobility campus
The planned office space is 3,000 square meters and the production area 7,000 square meters
“This makes us not only technologically future-proof
but also a strong employer in the region,” says Managing Director Ingo Benecke
Horiba FuelCon – previously known as FuelCon until the takeover last year – manufactures test
manufacturing and diagnostic systems for fuel cells and batteries
In other words – products that are currently in demand in the automotive and supplier industries
“The increasing demands on vehicle manufacturers to reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions are encouraging the automotive industry to invest in battery and fuel cell technology,” says Atsushi Horiba
“Demand is growing to such an extent that we will expand our plant to meet it.”
Saxony-Anhalt’s Economics Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) is pleased with the investment and the planned 250 new jobs
“The upheaval in the automotive industry not only entails risks
but also great opportunities that we must seize,” says Willingmann
The University of Magdeburg is also building a “Center for Method Development” in the Ostfalen Technology Park
the “E-Mobility Campus” will provide an attractive environment for companies and qualified employees

In addition to 7,000 square metres of production space
the eHUB has around 3,000 square metres of office space
there was a delay of around four months in the project – the original plan was for the end of 2021
But when the expansion of the Barleben site was announced in November 2019
the Corona pandemic with all its global implications was not yet foreseeable
the expansion of the site in Leichlingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) was also completed
Horiba FuelCon invested a total of 36 million euros in both projects
“Our investment in both site expansions is a milestone for our further growth,” says Robert Plank
“It is the answer to the increasing demand from vehicle manufacturers to reduce emissions
the rapidly growing importance of a clean energy supply for energy-intensive industries such as the chemical or steel industry and the increase in environmental monitoring technology to measure pollutants.”

UC Davis Health vascular surgeons are among the first in the country to treat patients with thoracic aortic disease by using a groundbreaking thoracic endovascular graft that is known to improve outcomes
The minimally invasive procedure, a thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), is made possible with a new medical device called the Zenith Alpha® 2 Thoracic Endovascular Graft
Patients treated with the graft can expect improved safety and healing compared to traditional surgical procedures
UC Davis Medical Center is one of the first sites nationwide to have commercial access to the Zenith Alpha® 2 Thoracic Endovascular Graft and the first hospital in Northern California to utilize the endovascular treatment
“We are excited to utilize this novel device for patients’ complex anatomic restrictions,” said Andrew Barleben
director of the UC Davis Aortic Center and the surgeon who performed the first procedure at UC Davis
“This next-generation device may allow us to offer procedures with lower risk of stroke than previously.”
the main pipeline for blood from the heart to the body
The weak spot has the potential to dissect or rupture
cutting off the supply of life-sustaining blood to the rest of the body
Aortic diseases can affect people at any age
Patients with aortic disease usually have no symptoms and are unaware of the changes in their aorta
the diagnosis is made incidentally through imaging tests such as chest X-rays
or echocardiograms performed for other reasons
Current nonsurgical treatments include lifestyle changes like exercise
Patients also require regular imaging of the aorta and careful management of blood pressure
Patients needing an aorta repair may undergo open heart surgery or a less-complicated stent procedure like TEVAR
TEVAR is a minimally invasive procedure to repair the aorta
a major blood vessel and the largest artery of the body
which carries blood from the heart to the circulatory system
a stent graft is placed through a small hole in the patient’s groin
The graft is made of a fabric-covered metal mesh that is fully opened under X-ray
The device repairs the diseased aorta and helps to keep it open and allow blood to flow properly to the rest of the body
The new thoracic endovascular graft is thinner and easier for vascular surgeons to use
which benefits patients with challenging anatomies
“This minimally invasive approach helps to prevent stroke in a novel way during deployment of the endograft
which improves patient safety and the healing process,” said Barleben
“Being one of the first centers in the country to offer this novel system is a testament to our outstanding team-based approach to patient care,” said Misty D. Humphries, interim chief of vascular surgery
“Our vascular surgery team is among the best and most comprehensive in the nation
efficient and high-quality care to the patients we care for is what drives us to lead the field.”

“They are contributing quite a bit,” said GCC assistant coach and long-time former Albion Coach Gary Mannella
“It’s nice to get the local talent to stay close to home and hopefully have success here and then move on to four-year schools to continue their education and playing careers.”
who has started 4 games on the mound is 1-1
Warne is hitting .256 with 2 doubles and 7 RBIs and defensively has a fielding average of .966
who has seen considerable action at shortstop
Porter has pitched in five games both as a reliever and spot starter while DiCureia has seen some action at second base and has hit a home run
The Cougars are set to begin the conference portion of their schedule and weather permitting will host Niagara County Community College in a doubleheader Saturday and then visit NCCC for a twin bill on Sunday
Debra Reals still remembers lying on a gurney with her father and sister at her side as trauma surgeons explained the emergency procedure they needed to perform to save her life
Reals had been driving home to Oakley after a nice dinner with friends
As she turned onto Eight Mile Road in Stockton
another car slammed into her vehicle — knocking it into a dry canal
Reals was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center, the area’s only level 1 trauma center
a tear in her ascending aorta and aortic arch
That’s the top part of the main artery carrying blood away from the heart
my seat belt caused a tear in my aorta,” Reals shared
but sudden deceleration can still cause organ damage or severe injuries like an aortic tear
Based on Reals’ condition and the location of her injury
the team decided on a novel procedure: an aortic arch repair with dual branched device deployment.
the stent graft bridges the gap from the tear in the aortic arch
It has only been done a handful of times and had never been done in Northern California.
“Repairing an injury to the aortic arch presents many challenges due to the size
shape and location of the injury,” Barleben explained
“Current treatment is typically open surgical repair
That requires sternotomy [opening of the chest] and hypothermic circulatory arrest [suspending blood flow under very cold body temperatures]
open chest surgical aortic arch repairs can have relatively high death and complication rates in traumatic injuries
many patients aren’t eligible.”
“We are fortunate enough to have a strong cardiothoracic team whom we regularly collaborate with
Reals’ repair involved incisions smaller than the width of a finger and took just under two hours
The surgeons accessed her artery at the top of the legs and delivered branch stents through upper extremity artery access to circulate blood to the brain and arms.
an angiogram showed successful repair of the severe blunt aortic injury.
“This novel approach is designed to make a minimally invasive repair possible for more patients
while potentially reducing the risks of surgery
It adds to the more standard open and hybrid procedures offered at UC Davis,” Barleben added
“This type of procedure could reduce procedure time and hospital stays
as well as potentially improve outcomes for patients.”
an early CT scan revealed significant healing of Reals’ aortic injury
Reals still has pain in her ribs and hip and is recovering from her other injuries
but no issues related to the tear in her artery
“I am just so thankful to UC Davis Health for the care they provided,” Reals reflected
Reals and her family said they never felt nervous or concerned about the procedure.
“The surgeons were very open about what would happen and provided all the details on why it was necessary,” she shared
“It gave us confidence in their approach and plans for treating my injury.”
The endovascular arch replacement with a dual branched device deployment procedure is one of many minimally invasive vascular procedures performed by the UC Davis Health vascular surgery team
Some of the additional procedures include:
“We are proud to offer a vast array of minimally invasive procedures as part of our commitment to advancing medical science and improving patient outcomes,” said Misty D. Humphries, the UC Davis Health interim chief of vascular surgery
“Our vascular surgery team is renowned for its commitment to cutting-edge research and patient care
This is due to our team of highly skilled medical professionals who work tirelessly to make patients feel secure and well-cared for.”
Structure knocked over at shipyard after vessel was torn loose in storm
A Wallenius Wilhelmsen car carrier has been ripped from its moorings in a storm in Germany, damaging infrastructure at the Lloyd Werft shipyard.
The Nordsee-Zeitung reported that the 7,194-ceu Don Quijote (built 1998) knocked over a crane and hit floating dock No 3 at the facility in Bremerhaven on Sunday evening.
Contact was made between the vessel’s bow and the 450-tonne shipyard crane, with a lifting capacity of 25 tonnes.
The crane had stood at the yard for 50 years, after being made by VEB Baumechanik Barleben in what was then East Germany.
Damage was also caused to the outfitting quay at Lloyd Werft.
Sven May, operations manager at Lloyd Werft, told the newspaper the exact extent of the damage is not yet known.
He said the crane is probably a total loss, however.
Experts will be brought in to examine the floating dock, which is currently empty.
May said no final assessment will be made until at least Wednesday.
The maritime police in Bremen said damage would be in the high six-digit range.
Operations at the shipyard are able to continue as normal.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen told TradeWinds: “Most importantly, no personal injuries or environmental damages have been reported.”
“The vessel Don Quijote, currently at the working berth in Bremerhaven in Germany, was blown off its berth on Sunday night, touching the nearby Lloyd Werft shipyard floating dock. At the time of the incident the vessel was moored at the lay-by berth at Bremerhaven,” it added.
The owner was told there were wind speeds of above 60 knots wind at the time.
“Joint surveys of damages are underway, including both Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s and Lloyd Werft’s insurance companies,” the company said.
Large car carriers present a big target for high winds. When storms are approaching, tugs are usually used to make sure the vessels are in a safe location.
AIS data shows the Don Quijote remained moored in Bremerhaven on Tuesday morning.
It arrived at the yard on 8 July and its destination is shown as Antwerp in Belgium on 12 July.

we expect that many more applications can be economically transferred from classic core shooting to additive manufacturing in the future
We can therefore offer our customers and partners a real competitive advantage and a forward-looking solution that will open up new growth opportunities for us
We are the only supplier to develop and operate both core shooters and 3D printers
which means we know the cost structures of both technologies inside out,’ says Mössner
Hybrid core production with Laempe offers maximum flexibility
which gives foundries the choice: classic shot cores
additively printed cores or a combination of both
Laempe also offers the flexible ‘pay per part’ model via the INACORE joint venture (partner: R.Scheuchl GmbH)
The company in Ergoldsbach (Bavaria) has already had a range of core shooters and a Laempe printer for three years and supplies numerous customers with printed or shot cores

with a particularly high level of activity in North America at the moment
The global positioning of the company and the cooperation in the Sinto Group enable synergies and provide for a worldwide network
Our visit on site had a special occasion this time
because in the large halls at SKET GmbH (Schwermaschinenkombinat "Ernst Thälmann") in Magdeburg
the huge LHL200 - 1700 was set up for trial operation before it is shipped
the machine will produce cores for the casting of ship engines in Weifang
Henri Ackmann's team loves the big machine
The machine is so big that we had to move to the huge
historic halls of SKET GmbH in Magdeburg to set it up for the test run
Laempe team leader Henri Ackmann tells us proudly
steel and a lot of technology impresses with its compactness and the imposing dimensions of 11m height
16m length and 30m width with a weight of approx
The sand cores can weigh up to 2,600kg with a maximum shot volume of 1,700l and a cycle of 6 cores per hour is possible
The machine can be operated by one person plus gripper
After the complete installation of the plant
Henri Ackmann's team also produced the first test cores and the results are impressive
was also able to see this for himself and took the opportunity to emphasise the excellent cooperation of all departments at the Schopfheim
Mannheim and Meitzendorf-Barleben sites on this major project
because Laempe's LHL200 is the largest core shooter built anywhere in the world to date
and it did so without an accident and with the passionate commitment of the entire team
The Giga core shooter is now being disassembled again and sent on its journey to the customer in China via Hamburg
Those reponsible in Schopfheim and Barleben are convinced that the efficiency of the machine with its ability to shoot large cores in one piece will also be of interest to other foundries
Laempe Mössner Sinto GmbH is the world market leader in core shooting machines for the and with its comprehensive product and service portfolio covers all areas of modern core areas of modern core production
The traditional German company is a complete solution developer with headquarters in Barleben/Meitzendorf
At modern production site and in the branch offices in Schopfheim in the Black Forest and Black Forest and Mannheim
