two cars drive side by side at almost 180 km/h - and in the end two children die
The Hanover Regional Court delivers a harsh verdict
No verdict can comfort the distraught mother - whatever the outcome
mine are in their graves," said the weeping woman
He said: "I know my children aren't coming back." His children
died in February 2022 when the family car was involved in a banned car race in Barsinghausen near Hanover
A 42-year-old woman must now serve life in prison for murder
while her 41-year-old rival in the race must serve four years
Judge Britta Schlingmann apologized to the heartbroken family: "You get the impression that the trial is only about the defendants and their feelings
she wanted to say how sorry she was for what the family had had to endure during the trial - the death of the children could not be made up for with the trial
The children's father said that anyone who drives a car must also think about other people
Then the judge became clear: the court was convinced that the convicts had accepted the deaths of others and the collision with oncoming traffic
dangerous bodily harm and illegal car racing resulting in death
The driving license of the convicted Polish woman is to be confiscated for five years
that of the German-Italian for three years
the court followed the prosecution's demand
the two convicts engaged in an illegal car race
The woman raced about 500 meters in her powerful car on the opposite lane to overtake her rival
As she entered a bend - at speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour - she lost control of her car
This resulted in a collision with oncoming traffic
The car of the family of four was thrown into a paddock
even though they were wearing their seatbelts
Their parents and the driver of another car were seriously injured
it became clear that the woman often drove too fast - former work colleagues attested to her "high-speed" driving style
She had always driven high-powered vehicles and had also been flashed
said the public prosecutor in her summation
Judge Schlingmann explained: "The decisive moment is when they both drove into the bend
That is the moment when both defendants gave up control of the situation." They could not have seen what was behind the bend
which is a traffic situation that "can hardly be surpassed in terms of danger"
Such a situation is not controllable and inevitably leads to the death or injury of road users
Both drivers had accepted these consequences because they did not want to give way in the race
Although the two convicted men were deeply affected and both had apologized to the family
the unfortunate father was unable to do anything with this - and the court was ultimately unable to take it into account
The 42-year-old often looked down during the trial
It was by no means the first trial in the case: it had to be retried because the Federal Court of Justice had largely overturned the first verdict from April 2023 due to legal errors
the main defendant had been sentenced to six years in prison and the German-Italian co-defendant to four years
the sentence was for unlicensed motor vehicle racing resulting in death
The sentence for the man was now capped for formal reasons - the public prosecutor's office had not lodged an appeal in his case
But the new verdict may not be the end of the story: lawyer Yana Tchelpanova
one of the 42-year-old's defense attorneys
announced in the courtroom that the verdict was far from life - and: "We think it is a wrong verdict." As soon as she is in the office
The family's lawyer warned that if the parents of the dead children had to deal with the case again

Buzz Cargo started earlier this month at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' flagship plant in Hanover
the automaker has released some interesting manufacturing numbers
the company plans to increase the factory's daily production from 810 vehicles to a total of 900 (ID
with the goal of producing a total of around 15,000 ID
there are plans to build up to 130,000 units per year at VWCV's main plant
after 2023 we will produce up to 130,000 units of the ID
Member of the VWCV Brand Management Board for Production and Logistics
It is unclear whether he was referring to ID
Volkswagen USA boss Scott Keogh previously said that ID
Buzz volumes in the United States would likely be under 100,000 annually
Factor in the global sales target of 120,000 units and it's quite clear the US will be the biggest market for the ID
With the start of ID. Buzz series production
the VWCV plant in Hanover is now the fourth German production site for vehicles of the ID
VW says around 4,000 employees at the Hanover plant trained to produce the ID. Buzz while also assembling Multivan and T6.1 vans—all three vehicles based on three different platforms are partly manufactured on the same line. For the body construction of the ID. Buzz
the automaker notes that it has increased the degree of automation by 15% compared to the T6.1
which also supplies motor housings for the MEB platform
Buzz currently comes from the site in Braunschweig but will be assembled at Hanover's Barsinghausen site from 2024
Other key ID. Buzz components are shipped from Kassel (electric drives) and Salzgitter (rotor and stator for the MEB's electric drive). Volkswagen Group Components has pledged to invest about €2.3 billion ($2.4 billion) in the electrification of locations in Germany alone through 2026
well more than half of all investments.
Buzz Cargo vehicles to customers in Europe will take place this autumn.

Turkey defender Merih Demiral attends a training session at the team's base camp in Barsinghausen
UEFA suspended Turkey player Merih Demiral for two matches on Friday for making a controversial hand gesture at the European Championship
an incident that has led to a diplomatic row between Turkey and host nation Germany
denounced the decision as unacceptable and called for it to be “corrected.”
“The excitement and beauty of football should not be overshadowed by political decisions,” Yilmaz said
The ban rules Demiral out of his team’s quarter-final against the Netherlands on Saturday
After scoring his second goal in Turkey’s round-of-16 win against Austria
Demiral made a sign with each hand that is used by Turkish nationalists and associated with the Turkish ultra-nationalist organization Ulku Ocaklari
which is more widely known as the Gray Wolves
Demiral had said it was an innocent expression of national pride and that he was hoping he’d have “more opportunities to do the same gesture again.”
It was condemned by German interior minister Nancy Faeser and other German politicians
leading to a harsh rebuke from Turkish authorities and the summoning of the German ambassador
UEFA said it banned Demiral “for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct
for violating the basic rules of decent conduct
for using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football into disrepute.”
who is due to attend Saturday’s game in Berlin
said the 26-year-old defender had merely expressed his “excitement” after scoring against Austria
The Turkish soccer association had no immediate reaction to the ban
though Turkish media reports said the association would appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration of Sport
criticized UEFA’s ban as a “an extremely wrong decision.” He suggested that the governing body had bowed to the influence of “certain pressure groups.”
“UEFA’s decision has cast a shadow of political influence over football,” Celik wrote on the social media platform X
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said the decision “has reinforced the view that there is an increase in the tendency to act with prejudice against foreigners in certain European countries.”
Demiral was previously one of 16 Turkey players reprimanded in 2019 for making military-style salutes at games at a time when the country was conducting a military offensive in Syria
The Gray Wolves group was founded as the youth wing of Turkey’s far-right Nationalist Movement Party
which is currently in an alliance with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party
In the decades following its founding in the 1960s
the group was accused of in the involvement in politically motivated violence

Federal-Mogul Powertrain presence at leading trade show includes expanded range of cost-effective
high performance valve alloys that meet the challenges of downsizing
6 September 2016 … Federal-Mogul Powertrain
a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML) has introduced new materials for inlet and exhaust valves in response to the challenges of higher loads
increased intergranular and oxidation corrosion risk and continued downward cost pressure
which will be on display at the forthcoming IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hanover
are the result of a ‘twin-track’ approach by the company to define both an upgrade to conventional austenitic steel and also a more cost-effective alternative to high nickel ‘superalloys’
the quest for improved fuel economy is driving the trend of downsizing and boosting in heavy-duty diesel engines
Previous generations of 16 litre engines have been replaced by 12 and 13 litre units
with even 10 or 11 litre engines now producing 500 hp
This has led to a requirement for valves with increased high temperature strength that can withstand combustion pressures of 220 bar and above
while at the same time emissions reduction strategies are increasing the levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) exposing the valves to greater risk of wet corrosion
“For demanding applications the conventional answer is a premium material such as Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s ECMS-Ni80A
but with a Nickel content greater than 70 percent this is not always an economic solution,” explained Gian Maria Olivetti
“We have established new ways to make more effective use of the expensive alloying elements such as Nickel by validating materials with equivalent hot strength to ECMS-Ni80A
The main factors that differentiate the new materials in the range are the percentages of Nickel (Ni)
Chrome (Cr) and Manganese (Mn) that they contain
is a development from standard CrMn austenitic steel designed to suit both inlet and exhaust applications experiencing elevated temperatures
By increasing the Nickel content from the usual 3 to around 12 percent while fine-tuning the combination of other elements in the alloy
both hot strength and corrosion resistance are significantly enhanced
ECMS-Ni36 high performance austenitic steel alloy has a superior resistance to hot oxidation than its industry standard equivalent
ECMS-3015D (austenitic steel with 15 percent Chromium and 31 percent Nickel)
despite having only 36 percent Nickel content
it has similar tensile strength to the superalloy ECMS-Ni80A
which contains more than 70 percent Nickel
The development and validation process for a new valve material
includes the identification of appropriate alloying elements and limits on composition as well as the subsequent effect on grain structure
Exhaustive internal validation by Federal-Mogul to prove suitability for future market challenges then follows
“The very high level of alloying elements present makes these materials quite special,” commented Guido Bayard
“In order to predict reliability and conformity to engine applications
a wide range of rig and laboratory tests on wear
with a series of engine application trials on dynamometers also completed.”
Federal-Mogul is already in series production with valves made from ECMS-2512NbN and ECMS-3015D
while ECMS-Ni36 valves are undergoing trials with customers ahead of further production launches
The alloys ECMS-2512NbN and ECMS-Ni36 are equally applicable to on-highway
off-highway and leisure marine applications in the 10-16 litre category; for heavy-duty applications where the requirements exceed even the capabilities of ECMS-Ni80A valves – for example some marine and CNG high output engines – Federal-Mogul provides valves with hollow stems that have enhanced heat dissipation performance
To ensure the maximum efficiency and durability of its valves in service
Federal-Mogul also manufactures a wide range of associated components including retainers
These will be on show together with a selection of valves on Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s stand at IAA Commercial Vehicles
The company will exhibit at Booth C28 in Hall 13

Controlled valve rotation on medium speed applications ensures even temperature distribution on the valve seat and minimises the risk of combustion deposits accumulating on the sealing surface
22 July 2016 … Federal-Mogul Powertrain
a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML) offers a comprehensive range of valvetrain technologies for large stationary and marine engines
cotter and valve rotators developed by the company in service globally in engines with bore diameters of up to 640 mm
While much of the technology is shared with engines of other types
valve rotators are mainly applied to engines operating below 2500 rpm and with bore sizes from in the region of 150 mm upwards
as typically found in power generation and marine applications
The high valve mass and low dynamic effects of these engines means adequate valve rotation does not occur naturally and must be supplemented in order to keep valve seats clean and equalize wear
“Engines for power generation and marine use are fuelled by a range of different oils and gases
requiring valve rotation to minimise the risk of combustion deposits accumulating on the valve seats,” commented Gian Maria Olivetti
“Rotation also ensures an even distribution of temperature and wear around the seat
increasing durability by reducing local distortion and avoiding blow-by and crack formation across the sealing surface.”
Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s Rotocap®imparts a controlled rotation to the valve as it opens
using a compact and well-proven arrangement of balls and ramps within a self-contained assembly
The balls sit in individual pockets within the body of the rotator
each pressed towards the upper end of its sloping track by a small coil spring and covered by a ball ring and a single large Belleville spring
increasing valve spring forces cause the Belleville spring to load the balls
The relative rotation between the Belleville spring and the rotator is transmitted to the valve stem through the valve cotter
The durability of the Rotocap is aligned with the service overhaul schedule of the engine and also the lifetime of the other valvetrain components
themselves the subject of continuous customer demand for service life to be increased
Implementing between two and six valve rotations per minute at 500 strokes per minute
the Rotocap is manufactured in sizes up to 200mm in diameter
but can be specified to a larger dimension
The Rotocap can be configured for mounting above or below the valve spring pack
the Rotocap technology continues to be evolved by Federal-Mogul Powertrain in order to meet new technical challenges and changing market requirements
“Trends in the market are towards higher valve spring loads and reduced package space allowance
with customers also continuously demanding increased component life,” explained Guido Bayard
“Our latest evolution of Rotocap saves space by integrating and combining the ball race ring and Belleville spring into a single component.” This specific design feature allows Federal-Mogul Powertrain to deliver product lifetime in excess of 30,000 running hours
The company’s long experience with valve rotators allows it to produce the component with the necessary accuracy using specific manufacturing processes relative to unit size
New applications for valve rotators are initially proven through test rig development then prototype tests by customers on firing engines
Several thousand hours of durability testing are completed prior to the start of series production
Federal-Mogul Powertrain offers an alternative design
Using a single garter spring in place of the balls and ramps
the Rotocoil is applicable for rotator sizes up to in the region of 60mm in diameter
Federal-Mogul Powertrain will exhibit a range of valvetrain core products
cotters and valve rotators for stationary and marine engines at SMM
Machinery and Marine technology trade show that takes place in Hamburg
The company’s aftermarket brands include ANCO®wiper blades; Champion®spark plugs
Federal-Mogul was founded in Detroit in 1899 and maintains its worldwide headquarters in Southfield, Michigan. The Company has more than 53,000 employees globally. For more information, please visit www.federalmogul.com
Dynamic finite element modelling of valve closing events leads to improved prediction of loads and greater valve durability with fewer design iterations
28 January 2016… Federal-Mogul Powertrain
a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML)
has developed a simplified transient dynamic simulation model of valve closing action in order to predict dynamic loading on engine valves
By improving the accuracy of calculated deformation and stress under load
the technique enables valve fatigue life to be estimated more reliably and helps to ensure optimum material selection from the early stages of a new engine design
“The dynamic loading during valve closing is a decisive factor in designing intake and exhaust valves,” says Gian Maria Olivetti
we can quickly calculate the maximum expected valve loads
thus saving time and ensuring targeted development.”
In the design of intake and exhaust valves for combustion engines
especially those with a high degree of forced induction by supercharging or turbocharging
particular attention is paid to the loading conditions during valve closing
The valve drive system is often still under development as the valves are being designed for new engine projects
restricting valve manufacturers to using simplified simulation models which limit valve loading evaluation to the main parameters such as valve closing speed
valve spring return force and the clearance between valve stem and guide
one side of the valve usually contacts the valve seat first
which can introduce heavy loading of the valve stem
The dynamic simulation model of the closing event
as developed and tested by Federal-Mogul Powertrain
enables precise calculation of these loads that in turn allows components to be configured optimally from the concept stage and life span to be determined more accurately
the load values associated with valve closing derived from the transient dynamic FE simulation can also be used to evaluate and rank alternative valve designs
such as a stem undercut or conical underhead
has a major influence on the stress distribution,” he explains
we can quickly draw conclusions on maximum valve loading and likely fatigue failure
and make sound decisions on design and material at an early stage of development.”
The results derived using the simulation model have been confirmed by practical testing on a valve test rig developed by Federal-Mogul Powertrain which enables actuation of a single valve and the evaluation of individual closing events
The rig is better suited for the validation of the simulation model than a complete cylinder head for a number of reasons: it provides greater flexibility in the geometry that can be tested; it offers better controllability of the measurements and improved access for the measurement technology

Mayor of the city of Kowel and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Kowel City Council
personally signed the agreement on the extended solidarity partnership between the two cities on July 17
A corresponding agreement between the cities was signed in a video conference on June 12

Mayor Conradt met with Mayor Ihor Chaika - LHS
Mayor and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Kowel City Council
They talked about the situation in Ukraine and the consequences for the city of Kowel
Ihor Chaika once again expressed his thanks for the support
which Mayor Conradt wants to expand further
Both have reaffirmed their willingness to exchange ideas on a regular basis
Saarbrücken has delivered three decommissioned fire fighting vehicles and a minibus with aid packages (provided free of charge by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) to the twin town
GIZ packages made it possible to deliver a wheel loader and a multifunctional device at the beginning of December 2023
These were immediately put to use in Kowel for winter maintenance
private initiatives for aid deliveries are regularly supported
both cities promote and maintain friendly relations
in particular by sending delegations to each other
enabling the citizens of both cities to meet and share their respective cultures
both cities pledge mutual assistance in the event of war
particularly in the area of support for refugees.
public institutions and businesses in both cities will be involved in implementing the partnership
but also interested citizens should be involved
“War is still raging in the middle of Europe
The destruction of the children's hospital in Kiev has once again shown us how ruthlessly and inhumanely Russia is waging this war of aggression
Ukraine therefore continues to need our unreserved solidarity
we are supporting the city of Kovel in these difficult times and making a contribution to friendly cooperation in Europe across national borders,” said Conradt
The city of Kowel is located in the northwest of Ukraine and has around 70,000 inhabitants
It is the capital of the district of the same name in the Volyn Oblast (Volhynia)
Kowel is located around 50 kilometers from the Polish border and around 100 kilometers from the border with Belarus
The town's name is derived from the occupational name for the blacksmith; there is evidence of ironworking in the late Middle Ages
the town is characterized by the engineering
but above all it is an important railroad junction
means that the city is also important for connecting Ukraine to Poland and the West
Kowel is already twinned with Walsrode and Barsinghausen in Lower Saxony
