Thuringer HC (Thuringer HC) advanced to the Bundesliga semifinals in the 2024/25 season with two consecutive wins against HSG Bensheim/Auerbach in the German women's handball Bundesliga playoffs.
Thuringer HC won 33-32 in the second round of the Bundesliga playoffs in the 2024/25 season at Weststadtalle Bensheim in Bensheim, Germany, on the 27th (local time). Thuringer, who also won 36-34 in the first leg, finished 2-0 in the best-of-three playoff, securing a place in the semifinals without the last three.
Johanna Reichert was the hero of the match. Reichert led the team's offense with 15 goals, and goalkeeper Dina Eckerle played a crucial role in defense with 12 saves. Natalie Hendrikse also contributed four goals to the offensive team.
On the other hand, despite the performances of Amelie Berger (10 goals), Nina Engel (8 goals), and Isabelle Hurst (4 goals), Bensheim was unable to overcome Thuring's wall in the end. Goalkeeper Vanessa Fehr struggled with nine saves.
Thuringers put strong pressure on them from the beginning of the game. Dina Ekerle blocked Nina Engel's first shot and opened with Julie Holm's first goal. Johanna Reichardt scored a 3-3 equalizer in the ensuing close game to lead the game.
Later, Thuringer pressed hard in defense to induce an opponent's unreasonable shot, and at the end of the first half, he took a six-point lead, bringing the atmosphere completely. The first half ended with Thuring leading 18-14.
In the second half, Bensheim tried to chase after Nina Engel and Amelie Berger with consecutive goals, but Thuringer broke back to 22-16 with Reichert's 12th goal around the 35th minute. Natsuki Aizawa's score from a sharp angle also continued the atmosphere.
Bensheim tried to block the attack by converting the defense to 5-1, but Ekerle blocked a 7-meter shot to cut the flow of the counterattack, and Kathrin Pichlmeier scored again with a personal breakthrough.
Until just before the end of the game, both teams remained tense. In the midst of the error, a minute before the end of the match, Reichardt scored his 15th goal to seal the match.
In the end, Thuringer HC defeated Bensheim once again, 33-32, to reach the semi-finals with a 2-0 series victory.

HC Podravka Vegeta (CRO) vs Storhamar Handball Elite (NOR) 23:19 (13:9)
Although two teams entered the match without a single loss in their record so far this season
Podravka proved to be too strong for their Norwegian rivals as they ended up climbing to the top spot in Group A
and their goalkeeper Lucija Besen delivered another good performance
The Croatian team were dominant throughout the game
and all Storhamar could do was cut the deficit to one goal on several occasions. The last time it happened with six minutes to go
but the hosts had a crucial 3:0 run to clinch the victory

HSG Bensheim/Auerbach (GER) vs MKS FunFloor Lublin (POL) 35:29 (17:15)
Neither side had claimed any points in the two previous matches of the current group stage
and it was Bensheim who now ended a losing run
who are playing their debut European season
had the upper hand against the much more experienced Lublin
who are now bottom of the group with zero points
The Polish team controlled the game in the opening 15 minutes
but then Bensheim turned the tide and created a two-goal lead at the break
and right wing Sarah Dekker made a special contribution to the German side's win with her eight goals

CS Gloria 2018 BN (ROU) vs Neptunes Nantes (FRA) 19:19 (11:9)
Each of the rivals hoped to extend their winning run
but ultimately they settled for a draw in this low-scoring yet very exciting encounter
The goalkeepers played crucial roles for both teams - Gloria's Renata De Arruda had 17 saves for a 49 per cent save rate
while Nantes' Floriane Andre stopped 14 balls heading her way (42 per cent efficiency)
the Romanian side opened a 8:3 lead midway through the first half
but Nantes slashed the gap by the end of the half and then drew level
later on even pulling of in front for a while
Gloria then had another good spell and led 18:15 in the 52nd minute
but the visitors from France managed to level the game at 19:19 before both teams missed a number of chances in the last four minutes
So Gloria and Nantes are still unbeaten and level
but the French team is on top thanks to a better goal difference
Sola HK (NOR) vs CSM Targu Jiu (ROU) 40:29 (23:10)
the Norwegian teams have displayed different performances in the European League
but while Storhamar won and Sola lost a week before
Sola bounced back from a defeat against Motherson Mosonmagyarovari
as they celebrated a confident victory against the debutants Targu Jiu
The home team were particularly impressive in the first half
Kamilla Herrem and Kristina Novak was unstoppable
as they combined for more than a half of Sola's goals - 21
So Sola now have four points after three games
while Targu Jiu are yet to claim their maiden points at this level

A German town is patting itself on the back for rescuing a fat rat that was stuck in a manhole
The BBC reported the town of Bensheim embarked on a "fairly large rescue operation" for the rat
led by "eight firefighters and an animal expert."
"Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect," said animal rescuer Michael Sehr
The BBC reported a video of the rat-saving attempt "attracted hundreds of comments applauding the care given to an animal that is more often targeted for extermination."
The town of Bensheim is quite familiar with that work
Bensheim was also the home to a prison operated by the Darmstadt Gestapo
"The Gestapo in Darmstadt was responsible for deporting around 3,500 of the region's Jews to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and extermination camps in Eastern Europe," according to an archive dedicated to victims imprisoned by Nazis
The Darmstadt Gestapo also murdered 14 people
troops were ascending on the town at the end of World War II
'Two American airmen who had been captured and were in Bensheim Gestapo custody had been executed earlier the same day
troops occupied Bensheim," the website reads
The names of the three American paratroopers murdered were W.H

Germany -- A slightly overweight rat was rescued by a team of firefighters after it got stuck in a manhole cover in Bensheim

was able to rescue the plump rodent using a guiding rod

A plump rat stuck in a manhole cover spurred volunteer firefighters and animal rescue workers to act in Bensheim
Sometimes the lowly sewer rat is the target of shrieks
And sometimes yesterday's vermin becomes today's vaunted victim
inspiring a phalanx of rescuers to come to its aid
At least that is what happened over the weekend in Germany
where a firefighter-cum-corpulent-critter rescue crew worked to free the animal in a pinch with a manhole cover
An employee with the animal rescue group Rhein-Neckar had tried and failed to save the rat in the town of Bensheim on Sunday, the Auerbach Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement
No matter that they were responding to a "small animal" rescue call — they arrived aboard their firetruck
armed with equipment and decked out in full gear
At least eight firefighters encircled the manhole
The rat was secured with a loop at the end of the pole
The suspended rodent wiggled as a firefighter worked a glove underneath in an effort to gently pop it out
In what may have been a sense of optimism that the rat had learned a lesson
its rescuers placed it back inside the sewer hole
Or maybe there is no other logical place for a sewer rat
Whether it will be avoiding wee apertures or knocking off the knockwurst remains to be seen

both against the second-placed side in the group
Nina Engel was HSG Bensheim-Auerbach Flames’ top scorer
but the German side also had a meaningful contribution from beach handball star Lucie-Marie Kretzschmar
The toughest group of the competition was Group B
as the Romanian side secured the first place with one round to spare
after securing four wins in the first five matches
the only German team to be eliminated at the start of the competition was BV Borussia Dortmund
with their last win against Norwegian side Sola HK
The other qualified team from Group B was Danish powerhouse Ikast Handbold
despite missing the top goal scorer of the 2023 IHF Women’s World Championship
a last-gasp goal from HC Dunărea Brăila in the last match
which qualified thanks to their 27:26 win against ATTICGO BM Elche in the last round
which have the top goal scorer of the competition so far
two more than Sola’s Malin Holta and Larvik’s Maja Furu Saeteren
in a battle which will see the German side’s coach
face a former foe from the Romanian league
HSG Blomberg-Lippe made it through from the first place in the group
but the battle for the second place went to the wire
as JDA Bourgogne Dijon Handball and KGHM MKS Zaglebie Lubin had the same number of points
but will face the unbeaten HSG Bensheim-Auerbach Flames in the quarter-finals
while Blomberg play against Bera Bera in the quarter-finals

Germany (Reuters) - Thousands gathered in the southwestern German town of Bensheim on Friday to watch a procession that seeks to remind locals of the meaning of Easter - an important festival in the Christian calendar - by re-enacting Jesus Christ's crucifixion.Actors decked out as Roman soldiers in shiny armor and red gowns accompanied the actor playing Jesus
who sported a beard and crown made of twigs and carried a large wooden cross through the picturesque town center in a tradition that spans decades. The procession
is known for its elaborate props and costumes and is performed in Bensheim every year on Good Friday - when Christians believe Jesus was crucified
The tradition was started there by Italian migrants in the 1980s."They do it in such a life-like way
it is so believable - it hits the mark," said Joachim Klenk
enjoyed watching the procession with her friends: "I'm a believer and for me it's important because it reminds me of Good Friday
the whole story."According to the Christian faith
symbolizing death is not the end but rather a new beginning.Reporting by Reuters Television and Kai Pfaffenbach; Writing by Michelle Martin; editing by Susan Thomas

Aral pulse has opened a charging corridor for electric trucks along 600 kilometres of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor
The busy logistics route currently connects two major metropolitan regions with six charge hubs
the charging corridor includes 300 kW stations adapted to the dimensions of trucks at the Aral petrol stations in Schwegenheim
the charging stations in Bad Honnef on the A3 motorway and Cologne will complete the route
are structurally designed so that heavy commercial vehicles can easily access them
these four CCS charge points are not reserved for trucks but can also be used by electric cars
The opening ceremony for the electric truck corridor took place at the Aral pit stop in Bensheim
located on the B47 road near the Bensheim exit of the A5 motorway
Aral pulse charging stations for electric cars have already been found at the site for some time
and Ewe Go also operates its HPC columns in the adjacent car park of the McDonald’s branch
these cannot be accessed by heavy goods vehicles
The fact that such a charging infrastructure is crucial for the use of electric trucks in the demanding logistics business is emphasised by Alexander Junge
who is responsible for e-mobility on the Aral board
“The discussion about e-mobility is currently very much focused on the passenger car sector
But medium- and heavy-duty traffic is also at a decisive turning point
This is shown in particular by the announcements of the manufacturers,” says Junge
“Our strategy is designed to meet this demand with a corresponding offer
The first European charging corridor is an important milestone on this path
which must return to their home depot for charging.”
the spokesman for the management team of the National Charging Infrastructure Control Centre
“To significantly reduce CO2 emissions in road freight transport
electric trucks will play a central role in regional transport and long-distance transport
Aral is taking an important step in this direction,” Pallasch said
the switch to e-mobility can only succeed with a reliable charging infrastructure that meets demand
And we’re moving fast because the potential for climate protection is huge
and heavy-duty battery-electric trucks are hitting the road now.” He also refers to the upcoming tender for a Germany-wide initial truck charging network along the long-distance transport axes
which “complements the initiatives of the companies”
the Aral stations are still equipped with CCS charging stations
The legally required driver break of 45 minutes is enough to recharge a range of about 200 kilometres
A solution suitable for heavy long-distance traffic
where electricity for the next 400 kilometres has to be recharged in 45 minutes
the standard for so-called megawatt charging
Aral also refers directly to its partner Daimler Truck
a heavy-duty truck for distribution transport
The eActros LongHaul had its premiere as a prototype at the IAA Transportation and is expected to be ready for series production by 2024 – albeit with MCS charging options
Interesting in this context with Daimler Truck is the charging station at the Autohof in Schwegenheim on the B9 in southern Palatinate: the federal highway leads to the Daimler Truck plant in Wörth
all delivery traffic is to be done by e-truck by 2026

But Lucie-Marie Kretzschmar is not only successful on sand

she followed in the footsteps of her famous EHF Champions League winning father this season
having her debut in the EHF club competitions
HSG Bensheim/Auerbach qualified for the German Cup final
Facing German champions SG BBM Bietigheim there
they knew before that they made club history
as the finalists had a guaranteed spot in the EHF European League
“We were so happy and proud to make it to the EHF European League
maybe we were even happier than Bietigheim after winning the cup,” says Kretzschmar
who had missed this cup final due to a knee injury
“We now feel this euphoria in the city and the region
because for all of us it is something very
very special to play on the international stage
This is all new land for us.” HSG Bensheim/Auerbach eagerly awaited the draw event – and then Bensheim was placed in an all-German duel against VfL Oldenburg in the second qualification round
it would be the worst and shortest ever European experience we could have
We had dreamt of cool clubs and cities like Malaga or Reykjavik
Bensheim/Auerbach beat their domestic rivals twice – and the European Cup debutants had made it to the group phase
knowing that they would have an extended journey through Europe with at least six more matches
Kretzschmar and her team finally had their first “real” international match
playing at the EHF European League 2020/2021 winners Neptunes de Nantes in France
I had goosebumps when we were entering the sold-out arena
facing a team that has a squad for the EHF Champions League
I will definitely remember this match all my life,” says Kretzschmar
but she added: “Nobody expected us debutants and underdogs to win at Nantes.”
the next milestone is ahead for Bensheim/Auerbach: their first ever home match against an international team
hosting the Romanian side CS Gloria 2018 BN in the second round
we cannot play our home matches in our regular arena
but I hope many of our fans will travel that way to support us,” says Kretzschmar
Stefan Kretzschmar will try to watch the match on the internet – as the sports director of Füchse Berlin
TV expert for the streaming platform Dyn and currently official ambassador of Men’s EHF EURO 2024 venue in Berlin
he normally does not have the time to come to his daughter’s matches
when almost at the same time Füchse Berlin won the EHF European League final in Flensburg and Germany became the EHF EURO champions with Lucie-Marie as their team captain
she always has a lucky charm with her at every match: Stefan has a stone
Lucie-Marie always has the shirt of her younger brother Elvis
“I always want to have Elvis with me,” Lucie-Marie Kretzschmar explains
Elvis plays handball in the youth team of Stefan’s former club SC Magdeburg – and some months ago was selected for the German youth national team for the first time
“It is not easy for us with this last name
but both of us can manage it,” Lucie-Marie says
“We had the chance to watch the almost final version of this documentary with the whole family on Christmas
the moment has come to share this with friends
I am sure this is a documentary for everybody: people who know Stefan and his story quite well will see many new things

One mild October morning in Bensheim as The CEO Magazine speaks with acting Sanner Group (Sanner) CEO Johannis Willem van Vliet
“I’m told we have the best climate in Germany,” he smiles
The pretty chocolate-box town lies at the edge of the Odenwald mountain range on the Rhine plain
especially the riesling for which the country is famous
wine and plastics for pharmaceutical packaging may have little in common
but it’s here in the region’s viticultural heritage where the first chapters in Sanner’s own history were written
“As they started to experiment with wine in the region
the Sanner family realised there was a need for corks,” Johannis explains
the family started a business importing cork by sea and rail from Portugal in 1894
“They were very successful.” But rather than rest on this success
other industries with a need for their product were soon identified
cork was also the closure used on pharmaceutical glass bottles
so the family entered this market as well,” he adds
the pharma industry was moving towards a newer
“It was a very easy step into injection moulding,” Johannis says
the business produced both cork closures for wine and plastic closures for medicines
“But it became increasingly obvious that there was a greater opportunity for profit and success in plastics for pharma than corks for wine bottles.” Today
Sanner manufactures more than 2.5 billion plastic parts every year
making it a leader in plastic packaging for medical and healthcare products
Chances are that you have one of its innovations somewhere in your own home: more than 60 years ago
a closure that has become industry standard for effervescent packaging for tablets such as vitamins
Its team of 550 are spread out across four production locations in Germany
“We have around 1,000 customers worldwide,” he says
These new solutions are also making us adjust and expand our own technologies
“All the pharma companies are somehow linked to us.” Still wholly family owned
the company is now ready to make another game-changing pivot
“The Sanner family have said that it’s time for the next step into the future in the direction of medical devices,” Johannis tells
“the how and which kind of products and solutions are still to be decided”
a Dutch-born engineer with a passion for automation
“Sanner was looking for someone who had experience in R&D in medical devices.”
After completing a PhD in mechanical engineering
Johannis spent 17 years in Austria with medical device manufacturer Ottobock
including more than a decade as Executive Manager R&D
in August 2019 he was appointed Sanner CTO
The first steps in this new direction have already been taken and while he can’t go into too much detail
Johannis reveals that “how patients are using medication” is one area of particular interest
users incorrectly apply medication,” he shares
the successful intake of medication is below 50%
which places a huge cost on the social system
not to mention that people aren’t returning to health.”
COVID-19 has been both a “challenge and a chance” for Sanner
“Since many people rely on our solutions to protect their health
business has grown even further than we anticipated this year,” he explains
Sanner has been producing special casings used in virus testing
a role that makes it “such a relevant company at the moment”
the company hadn’t seen a single case of COVID-19 in its production sites in Germany
“We’ve followed all the strict rules and I’m very proud of all our employees for having done so,” he says
It’s also a significant physiological burden on our people
keeping up the spirit and making sure everyone adheres to the rules is what is occupying much of my current focus.”
Johannis hopes it will be possible to solve this problem by indicating correct usage of medication
“This is exactly the type of technology that fits in with my idea of how to shape the future of the company,” he says
In its search for such “disruptive innovations”
the company is beginning to invest in startups active in the medical device arena
“The startup benefits from our expertise in design and manufacturing
our years of experience bringing products successfully to the market and our extensive customer network
it’s a source of innovative product solutions.”
The out-of-the-box thinking that characterises most startups also serves to test and develop Sanner’s existing capabilities
“These new solutions are also making us adjust and expand our own technologies,” Johannis continues
Sustainable innovations within its existing portfolio is another of Johannis’s areas of focus
While there are challenges to finding alternatives to primary plastic packaging
due to the regulated nature of an industry where patient safety comes first
he explains the company is moving towards bioplastics
“These biomaterials are based on sugarcane and they are 100% recyclable,” he says
Decreased CO₂ emissions during production is another environmentally friendly characteristic of the material
This portfolio of bio-based packaging – called Sanner BioBase® – is now coming to market
“We are hearing that our customers are interested because
Johannis hopes acceptance of recycled materials will follow
“Currently only the secondary packaging is allowed to be produced from recycled materials
which is always in contact with the medicine,” he explains
Johannis believes that a key to achieving this lies in collaboration with its customers
“Together we can approach the regulatory bodies and demonstrate that this is the way to go,” he says
he says its current packaging is fully recyclable and
the company sees an “extremely high recycle rate of what we produce”
A green streak runs through all aspects of the Sanner business
“The Sanner family has a very high focus on sustainability
we’ve managed to reduce our carbon footprint by half,” Johannis says
One of the ongoing challenges for Sanner is ensuring that elderly people can easily manipulate its primary packaging
we have to make sure that our packaging is child-resistant,” he shares
“Finding something that a grandmother can open but a four-year-old cannot is far from simple
Especially since the four-year-old has all the time in the world
and finds ways that we think are impossible.” This is particularly relevant to the nascent medicinal cannabis market and the many forms it may take: flowers/ floss
“Perhaps even more than with regular medicines
there’s a need to make certain that children cannot have access to these drugs,” he says
One of the company’s packaging solutions that balances child security and ease of use for older generations is the TabTec CR
a tablet and capsule container using Sanner’s patented Press & Flip closure
“The cannabis market is new to us and will allow us to grow,” he adds
“We want to be one of the first to be able to offer suitable product solutions.”
Every detail is considered from this angle; as an example
As the business looks towards new directions
having received approval from local authorities
“Our new building will be an extremely green building
one of the greenest in the industry and in the region,” he states
“We were very much aligned with the local government regulations on new constructions.”
the environment or its people – is at the core of a company culture that “is fed by the Sanner family”
“They very much want to develop the company
and not only from a technology or financial point of view but also from a people perspective,” he explains
The foundations are already solid: it’s not unusual to find employees who have been with the company for three or four decades
“I’ve been amazed by the loyalty I’ve seen here
It means that the company culture is very good and that people love working here.”
who also describes his leadership style as one based on “respect for all people”
the move to Sanner has been a meeting of like minds
you have to base your work together around honesty and respect,” he says
then each member within the group becomes important – it’s not just about the management team or certain stakeholders.” As an executive
I’m very happy that I’ve earned the trust to continue the Sanner success story
“It is key that I don’t just communicate with my colleagues on the management team
but that I also talk to the people in production because that’s where I learn a lot of information – personal
As he strives for continuous improvement and new ideas in the company
Johannis turns to all corners of the business for input to harness the high level of expertise of its people
“We have organised some great workshops on product innovations involving many of the people who work on the production floor
Because they have knowledge and experience,” he insists
The CEO position is one that he is proud to fill
“I’m very happy that I’ve earned the trust to continue the Sanner success story,” he says
it’s a role that is also allowing him the freedom to follow his passions
“It is personally important for me to be in health care
working in an industry that benefits a lot of people,” he enthuses
“I’m an engineer and I like to change the world.”

ShareA meteor shower is set to sprinkle the Grand Duchy with shooting stars in this first week of the new year, but they could be difficult to spot.
In the first week of January, astronomy fans are hoping to catch a glimpse of the Quadrantids meteor shower. The highest number of shooting starts is expected on the evening of Friday 3 January - just three weeks after the Geminid meteor shower delighted earthlings in mid-December.
The Quadrantids is one of the year’s most intense, but shortest, meteor showers. Its peak will last just six hours.
“The maximum is, as they say, pointed, i.e. of short duration,” explained Uwe Pilz, chairman of the Association of Star Friends based in Bensheim in Germany. “It’s a good idea to start observing right at the beginning of the night.” The later the observer, the fewer shooting stars they are likely to see.
The point of origin is in the constellation of Bootes, which is why it is also referred to as the Bootids. At the beginning of the night, this point is barely above the horizon in a north-north-westerly direction, explained Pilz. “That’s bad news at first.” However, as up to 100 meteors per hour are expected, it is certainly possible to see a few of them.
The shooting stars are caused by a cosmic dust cloud. As the dust particles enter the atmosphere flat, they leave long trails, Pilz explained, adding that these could extend over large parts of the sky.
According to Luxemburger Wort meteorologist Dominik Jung, it is currently rather difficult to observe the starry sky in Luxembourg. Over the coming nights, the sky will often be covered by fog, haze and high cloud, which considerably limits visibility. “You have to be lucky to catch a gap in the clouds,” said Jung.
For amateur astronomers and stargazers
this means that they will have to be patient until the weather conditions in Luxembourg improve again
Only then will they have a better chance of admiring the night sky in all its splendour

A fat rat stuck in a manhole cover prompted a major rescue operation as firefighters were called in to free it
A team of at least nine people attended to unleash the rotund rodent from its precarious situation in the German town of Bensheim
One animal rescuer attempted the mission alone at first but required help from firefighters to pull up the manhole cover
Footage showed the helpless animal squirming around as the covering was lifted before wedges were put underneath to keep it up
The manhole cover was then tipped to the side and the rat was helped to wriggle out before it ran back into a drain
"She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip - there was no going forward or back,” animal rescuer Michael Sehr from Berufstierrettung Rhein Neckar told local media
The rescue, which happened at around 2.35pm on Sunday, was noted as an “animal rescue
small animal” when firefighters were notified of it
The animal was “unharmed” after its release
Those involved in the rescue were complimented for their compassion towards an animal which often would be exterminated rather than helped
The young girl who spotted the squeaking creature also handed over a drawing of it surrounded by hearts to thank the rescuers
