and the draw for the event has been released
the first round and quarterfinals will be held at Park Ridge and Pascack Hills on Tuesday
while the semifinals and final will be back at Pascack Hills on Wednesday
The top 16 singles players in the county who entered regardless of position in their team’s lineups were seeded by their Universal Tennis Rating (UTR)
Bergen County will still hold its traditional pair of flight-based tournaments later in the month
and the Invitational is slated for May 17-18
Those tournaments are populated based on strength of team

I really wanted everybody to get a start this spring so it was just a last-minute decision to not push somebody going into the long break.”
Flynn graduated from high school early to join the Huskers for the spring
and feels good about the start of her college career
“I think I’ve become a better volleyball player
even just in the two months we had in the gym.”
The tradition of taking the team on the road each spring is a reminder of how many fans the team has outside of Lincoln
especially for the nine players on Nebraska’s spring roster who aren’t from Nebraska
including junior outside hitter Harper Murray of Ann Arbor
how much volleyball is appreciated here,” Murray said
“Obviously Michigan is more a football (and) basketball school
I forgot how much our fans love us and love our sport

Schepisi: ‘John Mitchell was one of the truly good ones’
a Republican who served on the Bergen County Board of Freeholders
passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning,” his children said in a statement
Mitchell was elected in 2010 as part of a Republican wave that ousted a Democratic county executive
Mitchell was the top vote-getter among the three freeholder candidates
running about 12,000 votes ahead of two of the Democratic incumbents
Chris Christie winning Bergen County with over 60% of the vote in 2013
outpolled Mitchell by 289 votes out of more than 200,000 cast; Felice captured the third seat by just 68 votes over Mitchell
but lost to Democratic incumbents Steven Tanelli and Tracy Silna Zur by over 12,000 votes
Mitchell entered the 2010 race at the end of August after one of the GOP candidates
dropped out after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
“John Mitchell was one of the truly good ones,” said State Sen

A plea deal could be on the horizon for the Maywood man accused of choking a 19-year-old woman to death during sex in 2019
and Bergen County Assistant Prosecutor Danielle Grootenboer told Superior Court Judge James Sattely on April 28 that they had a "preliminary meeting."
McFarland called the meeting "fruitful" but said she was waiting for a toxicology report from an expert
"I would definitely see a reason to continue discussing a potential resolution," McFarland told Sattely
She said she was scheduling an appointment with Gaffney that week and was willing to continue conversations with Grootenboer in the hopes of a resolution
"It's certainly worth the effort to have those conversations," McFarland said
because by then I will have had my toxicology report."
Gaffney was arrested in November 2019 after he allegedly choked Francis Garcia while they were having rough sex inside her car outside a party in Hackensack
said an emergency room doctor had said Garcia died of a benzodiazepine overdose
Grootenboer said she had identified a strangulation expert but didn't retain them until she was certain Gaffney's case would be going to trial
"Our conversation was productive," Grootenboer said
I need her to provide me with a counteroffer that is expressly authorized by her client."
The prosecutor said she cannot proceed unless Gaffney agrees to a potential plea deal
She said she would let Sattely know at their next hearing whether there will be a resolution or a motion schedule that needs to be set
Gaffney's next court date will be June 2 at 10 a.m
This tale of two British army sergeants who filmed the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp uses their profoundly disturbing footage
It’s TV that could alter your whole world view
the first documentary by the film and theatre director Sam Mendes
The film straightforwardly combines two precious artefacts held at the Imperial War Museum in London: 35mm film
shot by Sgt Mike Lewis and Sgt Bill Lawrie of the British Army Film and Photographic Unit
before and during the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp near the town of Celle in northern Germany in April 1945; and audio interviews given by the cameramen in the 1980s
Lewis and Lawrie did not record sound when they visited Belsen; the words they spoke years later are the only sounds we hear
Lewis and Lawrie do not arrive at Belsen until almost halfway through the film’s 36-minute running time
we hear how they came to be army photographers
and we get a flavour of their prewar civilian life
This is particularly pertinent in the case of Lewis
a son of Jewish immigrants from Poland who looked on in dismay in 1936 as fascists held rallies in his parents’ adopted home country
“But the world began to assume a shape more real than those things we were taught about it.”
filming devastating destruction caused by aerial bombardment: what used to be streets are now discernible by spotting where the rubble is not heaped quite so high
There they meet a handful of Belsen inmates who have already left the camp and are wandering
but apparently not significantly more damaged than other displaced civilians
On hearing about more “political prisoners” who have just been liberated nearby
Lewis thinks this sounds like a less dangerous assignment than the frontline: the term “political prisoners” strikes him as “a bit vague and rather dull”
but who have not before encountered moving images of the unique terror of Belsen
what Lewis and Lawrie are about to see will change them and stay with them for ever
face up and face down on the open space between the camp’s buildings
the camera catching juxtapositions of the dead in the foreground and the living behind
Then come the pictures no one can ever forget
Belsen contained thousands more dead who had to be moved by the truckload to mass graves
Lewis and Lawrie are there as these figures – more shocking because they are naked
more grotesque because starvation has robbed them of a recognisable human shape – are transported to 20ft-deep holes and then thrown
their fragile limbs twisting unnaturally as they fall and join the pile
surely among the most disturbing images ever shown on British TV
are more or less the whole piece: everything on either side is context and
the austerity of the format – if Lewis and Lawrie don’t explain something
it is not explained – can make What They Found slightly perplexing
Existing knowledge or post-viewing research is required to provide details on
why the Nazi camp guards – described with bitter British reserve by Lawrie as “arrogant” – are still present
or why the corpses were disposed of in that way
or why the buildings were all firebombed when the liberation was complete
What was there about the Germans that made them do this?” muses Lewis
before the tape runs out and the last moments of the film play to blank silence
[It was] not only the Germans: any race was capable of it
the camera formed a barrier between him and what he saw
“It pushed the reality of the sights away from me
But What They Found forces us to glimpse the clearest and most terrible truth
What They Found aired on BBC Two and is on BBC iPlayer now
This article was amended on 8 April 2025 because it was Lawrie who called the Nazis “arrogant” rather than Lewis as an earlier version said
Lola Hassid Angel can vividly recall the hunger
disease and death at Nazi camp liberated exactly 80 years ago
For a long time, Lola Hassid Angel did not want to talk about the horrors of her childhood. Her experiences of the second world war had not been light: by the age of eight, the Holocaust survivor had “reached adulthood”
and been confronted by terrors she could neither forgive nor forget
Which is why the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen by British forces on 15 April 1945 is as much a cause for joy as for the horror to come flooding back
admitted over tea in her apartment in Athens
“Now I want to tell the whole world what happened
And that’s because I want all these men who lead us to know what war really looks like
The Germans had a zeal for death; they had turned it into a science.”
Quick to smile, gravel-voiced and diminutive, Angel is among the very last of Greece’s dwindling Jewish community to have survived Bergen-Belsen, a concentration camp complex in northern Germany
the teenage diarist who would become one of the most famous casualties of the Holocaust
“What happened there was an abomination,” Angel said
“An abomination that historians will one day refer to as a dark page but which we

a peaceful exchange until the 11th Armoured division of the British army
arrived at the complex’s barbed wire confines on 15 April
Witnesses said nothing could have prepared them for what they found
lying by the thousands around the camp in various stages of decomposition
more than 14,000 would die within weeks of liberation because freedom had simply come too late
More than 70,000 people were killed on its grounds
most Jewish but also including 20,000 Soviet prisoners of war and other Nazi targets such as Roma and gay men
in Bergen-Belsen it was death through hunger and disease,” said Angel
who can vividly recall the arrival from Auschwitz in October 1944 of thousands of “exhausted and skeletal” female inmates
They felt they were running out of time and they knew that in Bergen-Belsen
The Angels were among the last Jews to be forcibly evacuated by the Nazis from Athens in April 1944
three years after the Wehrmacht had raised the swastika over the Acropolis and barely six months before the occupation would end
With false identification papers and the courageous support of the resident Spanish consul – credited with delaying the deportation of hundreds of Sephardic Jews – the family had avoided detection until two members of the Gestapo and a Greek collaborator knocked at the door of their small rented apartment on 25 March 1944
“They appeared at dawn and dragged my father away but not before he had phoned Sebastián and Elena de Romero Radigales [the Spanish consul and his wife] who were family friends,” she recalled
“As ‘foreign Jews’ it was said my parents could be exchanged with German prisoners of war but Elena was very concerned and desperately appealed to my mother to adopt me.”
The wagons of the windowless locomotive that the Angels were forced to board served both as a passenger train to Bergen-Belsen and a death convoy for those in the rear carriages who
Lola had not yet turned seven when she made the voyage
Time has not dulled her memory of the eight-day journey or of the train’s panic-stricken human cargo; “every so often” she still feels the lump in her throat that very soon came to symbolise fear
By the time the family arrived in the camp
the SS officers who had taken control had mastered the art of mass murder that underpinned the racial restructuring of the “final solution” envisaged by the Nazi regime
more than 18,000 detainees died in conditions so horrific that British relief teams felt fit to say it was difficult to discern the living from the dead
there was no prisoner swap once D-day occurred
“At first they gave us Swedish Red Cross parcels and treated us reasonably well,” said the octogenarian
“But after 6 June 1944 the boxes stopped and we were given one piece of bread a day with diluted milk in the morning and a soup of water with potato peel at night
As German defeat approached and the allies homed in
forces at the camp decided to put the estimated 2,500 “foreign Jews” initially lined up for exchange on a death train headed north
The train was intercepted by rapidly advancing US Ninth Army troops on Friday 13 April
“Suddenly it stopped near the lake of Magdeburg and the German guards left
Hours later there were these Americans liberating us
I honestly believe I had two lucky stars: Sebastián and Elena who stopped us being deported earlier
it would have been the British rescuing us
View image in fullscreenLola Hassid Angel holding a Nazi dagger her mother took
Photograph: Helena Smith/The GuardianA day later US troops
commandeering the homes of villagers in the area
ensured the Angels and fellow detainees had a place to wash
“An American soldier stood outside while our host
For the first time we slept in a smooth bed with eiderdowns and were able to take a bath,” she smiled
“I’ll never forget my mother spotting a small dagger on a table
picking it up and saying: ‘Those who are victorious can take the weapons of the vanquished.’ I’m proud of that dagger and still have it even now.”
most of Angel’s memories are “of the good things” that followed liberation
It appears out of nowhere in my subconscious
Angel has made a point of visiting Greek schools to address the Holocaust
The fresh-faced pupils listen in disbelief when she tells them that about 1.5 million children younger than 13 died in gas chambers during the war
“At the end of each talk it’s always the same,” she said
knowing what really happened not so very long ago
The Nazis finessed the art of killing people
down to how much Zyklon B gas was needed to kill hundreds at the same time
Technology has progressed so much since then
My big fear is if another Hitler comes along
North Bergen’s Robert Farley allegedly drugged coffee pot and shaved body hair on colleagues in series of ‘pranks’
A New Jersey police chief has come under fire after colleagues accused him of defecating on the station floor
attempting to drug co-workers by putting Viagra and Adderall in their coffee
and sticking a hypodermic needle into an officer’s penis
NJ.com reported that Robert Farley
repeatedly harassed his co-workers with a series of so-called pranks
while he is also accused of retaliating after a colleague
Five former and current North Bergen officers plan to sue the township over Farley’s behavior
which allegedly also included the police chief shaving his body hair on to people’s food and “scraping fluids from his underwear on to people seated in the chief’s office”
a North Bergen spokesperson called the claims “false and outrageous”
“The Township of North Bergen has full confidence in Chief Robert Farley’s leadership,” the spokesperson said
But Farley’s accusers allege that the police chief
instigated a reign of terror which one officer said included retaliation after they cooperated with an internal affairs investigation over a hostile work environment and civil rights violations
pulled his pants down and defecated on the floor in front of his entire office staff.”
Guzman added: “He has also left feces on the bathroom floor
apparently with the intent of having someone unknowingly step on it.”
Michael F Derin worked as a special captain with administrative duties at the department
He wrote in his notice to sue that he and Farley had been friends before the chief’s behavior towards him changed in August 2024
“Chief Farley chases me around his office,” Derrin wrote
“After cornering me in the filing area with no further room for retreat
he sticks a hypodermic needle through my jeans into the tip of my penis.”
Derin said the needle drew blood from his penis
the chief creates a hostile work environment.”
“The chief would shave his body hair on people’s property
and their food,” adding: “He was also fond of scraping fluids from his underwear on to people seated in the chief’s office.”
said he had witnessed Farley putting Viagra and Adderall into a coffee pot
Farley stirred the pills until they dissolved
and then waited for someone to drink the coffee
Officer Rashid Siyam said Farley and others retaliated against him after he participated in an internal investigation into civil rights violations
Siyam said some department members had referred to him as a “camel jockey” and “terrorist”
NJ.com published photos that seemed to support the officers’ claims
In one a man who the news outlet identified as Farley is shirtless and appears to be shaving his arm over a colleague’s desk
Another photo shows a toilet cubicle which appears to have been befouled
In a statement on the North Bergen police website
posted after he became chief in February 2024
who reportedly earns more than $228,000 a year
I will strive to lead the officers of our department to be an accessible component of our community while maintaining their competency
and professionalism,” Farley said at the time
Here are a few such overrated locations that might be better avoided if you're looking for a true Norwegian adventure away from the usual tourist traps
For those wanting to be alone and enjoy similar sights
try visiting some other less-frequented trails in the region
Traveling to other parts of Bergen or the nearby towns may give a more authentic glimpse into Norwegian life
If you're looking to soak in the local culture at affordable prices
you may want to explore neighborhoods like Grunerlokka
Travelers might find visiting lesser-known fjords equally impressive without having to deal with large crowds
Exploring other locations further inland can improve your chances while cutting down costs related to guided tours often available in Tromso itself

TEANECK — Construction has begun on a $6 million clubhouse facility for Bergen County's 18-hole
The golf course is part of the county's 811-acre Overpeck Park
It is one of six golf courses operated by Bergen County
they have been operating out of a modular trailer," Sands said Friday
The project includes a 2,774-square-foot clubhouse with a lobby
Also included will be a 1,197-square-foot exterior deck and a 2,774-square-foot golf cart storage garage with electric charging stations to support up to 60 golf carts
"This investment will strengthen the golf experience
support continued growth in the game and ensure that Bergen County remains a leader in public recreation,” County Executive Jim Tedesco said at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday
PARKS OPEN FOR SEASON Bergen County opens pickleball, tennis courts, golf courses for spring 2025
More than 343,000 rounds of golf were played across Bergen County’s public courses in 2024
making golf one of the parks department’s largest revenue generators
The clubhouse project is part of Bergen County’s broader Parks Master Plan — a multi-year strategy to upgrade recreational facilities
preserve open space and improve access to high-quality amenities for all county residents
The groundbreaking comes as Teaneck announced $1.1 million in state Department of Environmental Protection grants to make improvements to two of its 22 local parks
$1.1M PARK GRANTS This Bergen County town just received a grant over $1 million to improve its parks
"The township has enjoyed a new great working relationship with the county since the start of the new year," Mayor Mark Schwartz said Friday
"This is one such example right in our backyard that benefits our residents and we look forward to other projects to come."
Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2026
Hudson County officials announced that the North Bergen Police Department has officially launched a cutting-edge drone unit
becoming the first municipality in Hudson County to integrate a drone as a first responder (DFR) using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into its public safety operations
There are currently only four other municipalities in the state that use this type of technology
a certified Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) remote pilot and member of the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team
the newly formed NBPD UAS Division includes a team of four specially trained officers
The program enhances situational awareness
and increases officer and civilian safety without the high costs and risks associated with traditional aviation units
safe tools that help protect our residents and support our officers on the ground.”
The piloting software— manufactured by Paladin
a Texas-based company —operates within a 3-mile radius using LTE transmission
they are generally deployed at around 200 feet
responding in real time to emergencies prioritized by NBPD supervisors
Each mission is recorded and stored in a secure database
helping document and analyze public safety responses across the township
according to Hudson County officials.
Public Safety Commissioner Allen Pascual stated
“We now have the capabilities of an aviation unit without putting a pilot in the air or dealing with the extreme costs and safety risks of helicopters—something that’s especially important given recent aerial accidents in the region.”
The initiative was officially installed one month ago and was funded entirely through criminal forfeiture funds
Chief Robert Farley Jr.’s efforts to secure these funds have helped to fortify the local police force with valuable upgrades to keep residents safe
HCPO officials say we will be announcing further upgrades to the police department during the coming weeks
With each flight using about 5% battery per mile and requiring just 25 minutes to recharge
the drones offer a rapid-deployment advantage unmatched by traditional methods
“This program took nearly a year to get off the ground— from FAA licensing to implementation —but it was worth every step
Our UAS Division is already proving invaluable in search operations
We’re proud to lead Hudson County in deploying this kind of life-saving technology.”
The North Bergen Police Department’s UAS Program marks a major leap forward in the department’s ongoing efforts to modernize policing and maintain the highest standards of public service and safety

Here's a list of the top players left on the board ahead of Day 3
— Montana wide receiver and return specialist Junior Bergen on Saturday was picked by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft
was the 36th selection in the seventh round and the No
He finished his career with eight punt return touchdowns
His average yards per punt return was 16.71

A three-time All-American and multi-time All-Big Sky performer
Bergen's career included a legendary run of three return touchdowns in the 2023 playoffs to help lead the Griz to the FCS national championship game that season
San Francisco general manager John Lynch told reporters Saturday that first-year 49ers assistant special teams coach Colt Anderson had an influence in the team drafting Bergen
Anderson "kept talking about this kid from Montana and really (sold) him to us," Lynch stated in a video posted to the 49ers website
are we going to have a chance at free agency if we don't draft him
Is someone else going to draft him at the end?"
"Ultimately I do think there's added value with returners with the adjustment to the kickoff and the touchbacks coming all the way out to the 35
People are going to be less inclined to just kick it through the end zone — more return opportunities
So to have a dynamic returner is a good thing
He's done it really well at the smaller-college level
and now he's going to get an opportunity to do it with us."
Bergen is the first Montana Grizzly to be drafted since defensive end Tyrone Holmes was taken by Jacksonville in the sixth round in 2016
Bergen is the first Billings player to be drafted since defensive end and West High School product Dylan Donahue was chosen by the New York Jets in the fifth round in 2017 out of Division II West Georgia

Wallington senior softball pitcher Delilah Tabaka is now the fourth member of Bergen County’s 1,000-strikeout club
Tabaka struck out 17 batters in Saturday's Bergen County Tournament win over Mahwah
giving her 1,014 strikeouts for her career
Tabaka will likely finish as the all-time record holder in Bergen County
There have only been three other pitchers in Bergen County history to surpass 1,000: Sarah Piening is the current leader with 1,060
But Tabaka is also nearing her 100th career hit
something that neither Piening (Immaculate Conception)
Cathy Kaminski (Ramsey) or Kim Prevedel (Saddle Brook) did
Tabaka probably won’t be the only Bergen County pitcher to go over 1,000 strikeouts for her career
Rutherford star Giana Yaniero is currently at 929
Wallington remains in the 10-15 range in our rankings

The 2025 Bergen County baseball tournament features the largest field in the event’s 66-year history
The championship bracket remains capped at 24 teams
allowing the tournament to maintain an element of its trademark prestige
the invitational has expanded from eight teams
borrowing a format utilized by other Bergen County boys and girls sports
Of the 24 teams seeded in the championship bracket
the top eight receive byes to the Round of 16 (with two notable exceptions explained below)
Teams seeded 9 through 24 that lose their opening-round game move to the Bergen Invitational Tournament
where they will host a Round of 16 match-up
Teams seeded 25 through 40 play opening-round games in the BIT bracket
here are the storylines to watch as this year’s Bergen County event progresses
BRACKET: 2025 Bergen County Tournament bracket, scores, schedule
Bergen County Coaches Association baseball liaison Dan Vivino explained a new rule for this spring
Teams that have met the required .650 win percentage – but have not played at least 15 games – are ineligible for first-round byes
The amount of games played does not have an effect on the seeding
Per Vivino: “In an attempt to maintain the integrity of the rankings/seedings
we still seed everyone 1-24 based upon their performance.”
the eight highest-seeded teams to meet the minimum games requirement warrant first-round byes
1 Don Bosco (11-2 at Wednesday’s cutoff) and No
“This is similar to an individual Regional Wrestling bracket
yet you can still be the 2 seed overall,” Vivino added
So… who’s the favorite?Playing a first-round game likely will not have a negative impact on Don Bosco

16 Fort Lee is in for the second year in a row
Bogota also endured a long drought prior to last spring
The Bucs had last made the Bergen County in 2002
but Bogota players are now 2-for-2 in reaching the tournament since beginning their co-op with Ridgefield Park
The neighboring co-op from Ridgefield/Palisades Park is in the BIT
marking the Royals’ first county appearance since 2015
Palisades Park last played in a county event in 2006
With the two longest overall tournament droughts ending
the baton is passed to Saddle Brook (2006) and Elmwood Park (2008) to try for their return next spring
Is there a BIT favorite? It's tough to determine since the full field technically is not set
28 Hackensack are the highest seeds not to reach the championship bracket
But any one of the losing teams from the championship first round could drop in and get a second life
Bergen Catholic defeated Rutherford in the invitational final last season

NorthJersey.com put together a retrospective of teams celebrating milestone championship wins to commemorate the Bergen County Tournament’s 65th year
Here are the schools with anniversaries this time around
9-2 (1960): The Highwaymen became the first team to defend their title
2-1 (1965): The Golden Bears claim the first of their four titles and start a run of three in four years
3-0 (1970): The first title game to be seven innings rather than nine gave the Comets’ their lone title to date
1-0 (1975): The most recent title for the Golden Bears was led by coach Joe Sferruzza and tournament MVP Dennis Astrella
11-2 (1980): The Cardinals finished runner-up in 1979
5-0 (1985): This made it two titles in three years for the Braves
2-1 in 8 innings (1990): The Rams are one of five public-school progams to win consecutive titles
and this followed their 1989 triumph over Paramus Catholic
7-6 (1995): Before he led Don Bosco to an unbeaten 2008
coach Greg Butler guided the Norsemen to three championships in four years
it really has been a quarter-century since the Bulldogs’ last crown
MVP Jim Wladyka is now a well-renowned coach
who still holds the all-time record for coaches with seven Bergen championships
8-1 (2010): The last all-public final featured a pitcher earning hardware on each side
The Panthers’ Jon Reich was Most Valuable Player
Westwood lefty Chris Carroll the Most Valuable Pitcher
9-5 (2015): As much as the arch-rivals have played for Bergen Jamboree titles in basketball
this was the first title clash on the diamond (of three to date)
Ironman 2B Josh Shaw became the most recent back-to-back MVP
the 2020 season: A reminder to enjoy the Bergen County baseball tournament any time it gets played
MONTVALE – CJ Driver dropped to his knees and savored a new place in hallowed ground
Bergen County has a new all-time points leader in boys lacrosse
The Pascack Hills senior broke the county record on Saturday
finishing with 288 points after scoring four goals and three assists in a win over Demarest
Driver completed the chase early in the fourth quarter when he rifled a mid-range shot past Norseman goalie Neil Bernhaut
That play moved him past current pro and former Mahwah star Mark Glicini (286)
Driver now sits at 168 goals and 120 assists
I thought about going different places or going private
I decided to stay home here at Hills and build a program
Not many players have transcended their program over the last four years like Driver
Driver led the Broncos to their winningest season as a freshman and first league title a year later
Driver has never missed a high school game and almost never misses the scoresheet
He's notched a point in 32 straight games and all but three over his high school career
Pascack Hills uses the attackman in all scenarios
including as a faceoff wing and on the man down
"What impresses me about CJ is he's a coach on the field," coach John Esposito said
"We'll be in meeting rooms and he always contributes
He knows exactly what we do on the defensive side of the field
That scouting report makes sense considering Driver's family lineage
His dad Chris played lacrosse at Delaware while his uncle
is now the defensive cordinator for the Green Bay Packers
Driver is the first to admit that some things have gone way better than imagined
Passing a living legend in Glicini – who's about to start his 10th professional season with the PLL's Carolina Chaos – was not always on his radar
he sat around the dinner table with his parents and talked about goals for his high school career
But after hitting the mark halfway through sophomore year
"He's a player every coach wants," Esposito said
"I don't know if I can give a better compliment
Driver found out about the Bergen County record last year and came into Saturday needing six points to break it
Saturday wasn't the first time the former and current record-holder have crossed paths
Driver went to a game at Red Bull Arena and saw Glicini play with the Chaos
"I played against club teams in the summer that he's coached," Driver said
"It's kind of awesome being able to be up there with someone that made it professionally."
Driver tied the mark on a wraparound early in the third quarter
then pulled ahead with 11:14 to go in the fourth quarter on a feed from Christian Gesuele
That helped secure a 12-8 win in the first round of the Bergen County Invitational and a semifinal trip to Mahwah
Playing at home on Saturday made for a storybook setting
grandparents and younger sister Emily all came to Bart DiPaola Field to follow the countdown
"They're my biggest supporters and I play for them," Driver said
"My [other] grandpa passed away six months ago yesterday
Driver might not be finished reaching milestones
he'll likely become the third North Jersey player to hit 300 points and join Lakeland's Michael Wilson (361) and DePaul's Bradley Paterson (322)
Driver also has a chance to pick off the Bergen County goals record held by Fair Lawn's Joe Covino (194)
Pascack Hills (8-4) is tied for first in its division
"I owe it to my team to win the league championship," Driver said

Harold Bergen performing audio tech duties during the Nuremberg Trials
to work as a sound technician for the Nuremberg Trials
at which Nazi leaders faced a reckoning for atrocities committed during World War II
confirming that defendants including Hermann Goering
could hear the translation piped into their headsets
lifted them a little bit so we could hear but asking them if they could hear,” he said in an 2016 interview for StoryCorps that was conducted by his daughter Kathy Bergen
“One of the things they wanted to be sure about was that the defendants could not claim the sound was not working and they were deprived of their rights,” he said in a 2016 interview with the Pritzker Military Museum.
Mr. Bergen, who grew up on the Northwest Side in Albany Park
had nightmares as a teenager that Germans would make their way to the United States and set up concentration camps
as he sat in the courtroom with the accused
“I never felt any personal animosity toward the Nazis in front of me,” Mr
Bergen said in the interview with the military museum
And it was hard to imagine that they did what they said they did
“His defense was that he was being a loyal German
The one thing he said that I don’t think anybody else said was
‘If we had won...Eisenhower would be sitting here
24 of the most important Nazi military and political leaders were tried
Goering killed himself with poison before he could be hanged
Asked by his daughter whether justice was served
Bergen said in the StoryCorps interview: “I think as much justice was served as was available
How much justice brings back 6 million Jews
The Nuremberg trial did not stop war or mass murder or atrocities
maybe there’s less than there would have been otherwise
We’ll never know...I would like to think something good came out of it.”
He didn’t talk about his service much until his daughter-in-law Sue Bergen and his daughter brought it up about it a decade ago
“Nobody asked,” he said of his silence on the matter
Bergen joined the Army at 18 and got radio and infantry training ahead of a planned invasion of mainland Japan that never happened because that country’s leaders surrendered after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
for the trials in April 1946 after the prosecution had presented its case
Bergen lived a life of relative comfort in Germany
He ate well at the government dining hall and had time to collect German beer steins
feel lucky to have gotten that assignment just because life was so good,” he said in the StoryCorps interview
Mr. Bergen was born March 24, 1927, to Ida and Charles Bergen, who lived in Lawndale, then largely Jewish
His mother was a homemaker and later worked as a secretary for an insurance company
He attended Penn Elementary School and Roosevelt High School
Bergen went to the Illinois Institute of Technology on the GI Bill and then worked in public relations
at one point heading the Chicago office of the firm Ruder Finn
His corporate clients included Miller Brewing Company and General Motors
Mr. Bergen, whose first wife Molly Paskind Bergen died in 1974, raised his family in St. Joseph, Mich., Skokie and Highland Park. He most recently lived on the Gold Coast
Bergen is survived by his wife Sharon Peters Bergen and son Chuck Bergen
four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren

MISSOULA — Junior Bergen is getting his shot to play at the highest level of football
The Billings native and Senior High grad was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft with the 252nd overall pick after a record-breaking career playing four seasons for the Montana Grizzlies
Bergen, who grew up a 49ers fan, said in an interview with the team that he "kind of blacked out" and "it was kind of all a blur" after he got the call from general manager John Lynch
head coach Kyle Shanahan and owner Jed York
He had received the call while at a draft party with friends and family
"You could kind of feel the tension in the room with the pick coming up
I heard a lot of good things from them leading up to this process
so we were kind of hoping that's what it was
The 49ers announced Bergen as a receiver but Lynch spoke about his ability as a returner
He was sold on drafting Bergen thanks to assistant special teams coach Colt Anderson
the father of current Griz kicker Brayton Boyer
Bergen played receiver for the Griz on offense but excelled more as a special teams returner
His eight punt return touchdowns tied the FCS record for a career
Bergen, who is one of nine siblings
scored six of his special teams TDs in the FCS playoffs
Three of those came during Montana's march to the 2023 FCS national championship game
"This guy's kind of become this sensation," Lynch said in a press conference
"Brant (Boyer) and Colt Anderson kept talking about this kid from Montana and really selling him to us and they did a really good job
Is someone else going to draft him right at the end
I do think and believe that there's added value in returners with the adjustment to the kickoff and the touchbacks coming all the way out to the 35
Probably people are going to be less inclined to just kick it through the end zone; more return opportunities
to have a dynamic returner is probably a good thing
Bergen averaged 16.7 yards per punt return
who went on to be an NFL All-Pro with the Tennessee Titans
He finished tied for 19th in team history with 145 catches
tied for 22nd with 13 touchdown grabs and 26th with 1,777 receiving yards
Bergen is the first Griz to be drafted since 2016
when defensive end Tyrone Holmes was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round
He's the first Billings native to be taken since 2017
when defensive end Dylan Donahue was chosen by the New York Jets in the fifth round
"They're going to get a hard-working kid who loves ball," Bergen said after he performed in front of 21 NFL and CFL scouts at UM's Pro Day earlier this month when asked what a team that takes a chance on him will be getting
I think I've been able to showcase that throughout the last few years
Just my readiness to come in at any point and make a play and lead my team."

At least, that is how the San Francisco 49ers made it seem when they selected two wide receivers in the NFL draft. First, it was Ole Miss receiver Jordan Watkins in the fourth round
The 49ers envision him as a vertical threat
their second and last receiver taken was Montana's Junior Bergen in the seventh round at No
It's tough to get thrilled about a receiver taken in the seventh round
especially one that was close to the end of the draft
He has practice-squad player written all over him
the 49ers didn't draft Bergen to help them on offense
The 49ers drafted Bergen for one reason and one reason only
and that is to compete to be their special-teams kick returner
“They kept talking about [special teams coordinator] Brant [Boyer] and [assistant special teams coach] Colt Anderson kept talking about this kid from Montana and really selling him to us," said John Lynch
are we going to have a chance at free agency if we don't draft them
Is someone else going to draft them right at the end
I do think and believe that there's added value in returners with the adjustment to the kickoff and the touchbacks coming all the way out to the 35
Probably people are going to be less inclined to just kick it through the endzone
And he'll go in there and compete and he's done it really well at the smaller college level
And now he's going to get an opportunity to do it with us.”
Wide receiver Jacob Cowing has officially been put on notice. He held down the special-teams returner role last season and did a fine job there.
Adding Bergen, however, means he will need to prove why he should remain there. Or, maybe the 49ers envision Cowing taking on a larger role on offense and won't be needed as much as a returner.
It could be both, and I tend to lean that way. Cowing cannot fall asleep when training camp begins. He will have Bergen to compete with as a returner and Watkins on offense.
This will be one of the more highly anticipated training camp position battles.
