Just 30 minutes north of Stuttgart by train
Besigheim is one of Baden-Württemberg’s best-kept secrets
It’s a perfectly preserved medieval town nestled between the Neckar and Enz rivers
Founded in the 12th century and fortified by the 13th century
this former walled stronghold is now a postcard-worthy destination known for its half-timbered houses
flower-draped balconies and panoramic views
Besigheim offers a peaceful day trip that feels like stepping into another time
followed the signs for “Altstadt,” and was almost immediately met with quiet cobblestone streets and medieval watchtowers
This five-story structure features vaulted ceilings
a Romanesque fireplace and even a medieval latrine chute—details that speak to the town’s remarkable preservation
The stone exterior still bears the etched marks of its original masons
I was beneath blooming magnolia trees casting soft shadows against the town’s sandstone walls
and the contrast between ancient stone and pink blossoms made for the kind of scenery that practically forces you to slow down
The aroma of roasting meats and fresh bread led me toward the market square
and every few feet revealed something worth a photo—arched doorways
hand-painted signs or families enjoying a midday snack in the sun
a family-run restaurant just steps from the town hall
The timbered building dates back to the 1500s
with flower boxes under the windows and an umbrella bearing the name of the local vineyard: Felsengartenkellerei Besigheim
Surrounded by steep vineyard-covered hillsides on nearly all sides
the town feels naturally cradled by wine country
which paired perfectly with the atmosphere: quiet laughter
distant church bells and the occasional cyclist rolling past
I made my way to the banks of the Enz River
following a portion of the Panoramarunde Niedernberg trail
with hand-built stone walls climbing the hills
I never reached the overlook platform itself
the views were rewarding featuring sloping vines
sun-dappled rooftops and the stillness of a town content with its own rhythm
Everything around me felt built to endure and worth lingering in
Besigheim isn’t about museums or tour buses
and discovering small surprises: a red British-style phone booth turned into a book exchange
Besigheim reminded me that some places are meant to be walked slowly
seen quietly and remembered long after the day ends
Getting there: Besigheim is about 30 minutes by direct train (MEX18) from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof
The old town is a short walk from the station
When to visit: Spring and fall are ideal for vineyard walks and pleasant weather
the town square and the 13th-century Schochenturm
Where to eat: Ratsstüble (Marktplatz 3) for hearty Swabian food and local wine
He has traveled to more than 40 countries and enjoys exploring historic towns
seasonal festivals and quiet trails that offer a break from the everyday pace of life

say they have found papers that prove President Obama has German roots dating to the 1700s
According to parish records uncovered by experts at the genealogy Web site Ancestry.com
He sailed aboard a ship called “Patience” in 1750 to America
changing his last name to “Wolfley” upon arrival and eventually settling in Middletown
according to head genealogist Anastasia Tyler
he married Anna Catherine Schockey in 1756 and had at least six children
including Ludwig Lewis Wolfley — Obama’s fifth great-grandfather — who was born in 1766
The investigation was started by the Web site
which determined in 2007 that Obama had Irish ancestry
the investigative team linked Obama back to Wolfley relatively quickly
But it was not until last Friday when a researcher was poring over microfilmed documents at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City
that they got the breakthrough documenting Wolfley’s German ties
the documents suggest Obama’s family involvement in politics began centuries ago — the parish Seelenregister indicates Johann Conrad Woelflin’s grandfather
was mayor for 30 years of Orsingen or Oefingen
The old script makes it difficult to read the name of the town exactly
but the Family History Library says a baptism record for one of Conrad Woelflin’s sons lists Conrad as a “member of the court” in Oefingen
Commander in Chief has something of a military pedigree
Johann Martin Woelflin is listed as a military field surgeon
According to the Seelenregister he was involved in much of the tumult of early 18th century Europe power struggles
During the 1716-18 Austro-Turkish War he was involved in the famous siege of Temesvar
in which Habsburg Imperial armies led by Prince Eugene of Savoy took the last important Ottoman-Turk stronghold in Hungary
which is today the Romanian city of Timisoara
the document notes that Woelflin was injured with an arrow shot from the fortress
Married to Maria Margaretha Woelflin in 1722
the couple had nine children of whom Obama’s ancestor Johann Conrad was number four
The family appears to have moved around a lot; primarily in the Stuttgart area
Besigheim deputy mayor Klaus Schrempf told APTN he was “very surprised” that Obama could have a connection to his city
But he tracked down a copy of other local church records himself
Obama and if he would come and visit at some stage
it would be a great joy for the city and for the people,” he said
The quaint city dates back to at least 1153 and today has 11,400 residents
and two medieval towers and a late-Gothic church give it a picturesque silhouette
who runs the Cafe zum Hirsch in the old city center
said he always thought Besigheim was “something very special.”
“I took it for granted that some great person came from Besigheim,” the 47-year-old told APTN
Several other presidents have German backgrounds — perhaps most famously Dwight D
who as Supreme Allied Commander Europe during World War II directed the western effort to defeat Nazi Germany
The White House did not respond to requests for comment on Obama’s German link
But Ancestry.com spokesman Mike Ward said the site decided to pursue Obama’s ancestry purely out of interest
“We use these types of stories as opportunities to highlight how interesting family history can be — that everyone has an interesting story to tell,” he said
