FAIRFIELD \u2013 The 51st rendition of RAGBRAI attracted riders from across the country and even from other countries Home / News FAIRFIELD – The 51st rendition of RAGBRAI attracted riders from across the country and even from other countries who stood out from the crowd thanks to their jerseys that displayed the Canadian flag Mark and Amy Biebrich rode in RAGBRAI for the first time last year and enjoyed it so much they came back in 2024 Mark said the family has been avid cyclists for years and they decided to sign up for RAGBRAI on a whim after learning about it from a YouTube show their daughter watches Their 2023 RAGBRAI ride was the first time Mark and Amy had visited Iowa so everything about the state was new to them “I don’t think I could have named a town,” Mark said about his lack of knowledge of all things Iowa Mark said last year’s RAGBRAI was extremely hot and Amy added that the number of riders was overwhelming for them since they were rookies But by the time they went through their first pass-through town on Day 1 it became this really amazing experience where you met all sorts of people from all over the world,” Amy said Mark and Amy said they ride their bikes often around Winnipeg but that part of Canada is so flat that it doesn’t prepare them well for steep hills ‘We’re flat like a waffle,’ well we’re flat like a pancake,” Amy said Mark said the only elevation changes they can practice on within 60 miles of their home are bridges even though Iowa might not have a reputation for being a hilly state it’s very hilly compared to where they’re from it’s extraordinarily hilly,” she said Amy said the Tuesday stretch from Atlantic to Winterset was the most difficult day of the week “I wasn’t fueling properly,” she said “I was so excited to have the different foods at all the stops along the way that by the time I was back on the road I realized I had eaten too much or I had eaten the wrong thing.” Mark said he found this year’s hilly route to be fun and challenging while The Union was chatting with the Biebrich family a person walking by saw their Canadian jerseys and mentioned that he was from Winnipeg and he said this was his first time doing RAGBRAI and that he was “not ready for any of these hills.” Evan Biebrich said his first year of doing RAGBRAI was a fantastic experience and that he liked sharing it with tens of thousands of other people but it is fun to get going really quickly on the downhills,” he said “And the overnight towns are basically big parties so it’s incredibly fun and awesome.” Evan said they try to leave their overnight town by 5-6 a.m so they have enough time to stop at each town on the route and stretch their legs “We try to stay near the front of the crowd though today we haven’t really done that “It also helps us not get caught in the really hot weather.” Evan said he trained for this grueling week of cycling by going on 100-kilometer bike rides (62 miles) on a regular basis and doing a 200-kilometer marathon the week before RAGBRAI “My legs are a little rough because it’s been a lot but you’ve got to make sure you have enough energy to get through the day,” he said Evan said the highlight of RAGBRAI was eating food from the vendor P.B which set up in several small towns along the route including in Libertyville Call Andy Hallman at 641-575-0135 or email him at just what we had in mind at Namaste Nepal around the corner from the Schlosspark in the Biebrich district of Wiesbaden The restaurant says it sources its Ayurvedic spices from Nepal But having eaten at our fair share of Indian places we weren’t sure how distinctive Nepalese fare would be in comparison Although we saw familiar menu items like naan we started with an appetizer from the country’s Himalayan roots The spicy vegetarian momos are a variation on the traditional dumpling of the region Nepal’s identity came across in the blending of chilis cilantro and cardamom in the slightly fried round dumpling The momos were balanced with enough heat to warrant their spicy label My wife chose the Ayurvedic curry with paneer She said the curry’s cardamom- and clove-forward taste paired well with her Ayurvedic tea a sampler platter that had three smaller-portioned entrees with rice which had a surprisingly creamy texture considering it didn’t contain any dairy as well as a pleasantly fragrant potato-and-cauliflower dish But my favorite of the three was the kalo daal kidney beans and chickpeas was thick and hearty but didn’t feel heavy I tasted a cilantro note and other herbaceous flavors I couldn’t nail down My wife and I agreed that while the curry portions were adequate this is a minor complaint about an otherwise fantastic meal The small dessert that my platter came with was laal mohan a tasty deep-fried dough ball soaked in a sweet syrup with hints of cardamom and cinnamon I can’t say I would have recognized it as a dessert without knowing better The fried apple rings were our favorite dessert by far The treat combined the sweetness of the fruit with a syrup like the one on the dough ball Parking at Namaste can be problematic depending on the time of day A bus stop is within a couple of hundred feet of the eatery there’s something very comforting about Namaste Nepal that I’m sure will call me back Namaste Nepal Restaurant Germany  11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; his mirrors were really closer than they appeared racing not only the other 25 cars in the field but also rain clouds that were closing on the track made the most of a late strategy call by Team Penske to sprint away from those cars that had decided to not pit on the race's only caution making the most of his fresh tires and fuel load to gap the field Team Penske split their pit stops with Scott McLaughlin coming in first and Newgarden a lap later with Newgarden just missing coming out on the track ahead of McLaughlin due to a slightly slower pit stop caused by Newgarden being held up by Christian Lundgaard pitting ahead of him By the time the pit stops had cycled off that caution Newgarden second and the rain right on top of them as a third caution quickly became a red flag and the field pulled into pit lane to wait out the rain The threat of rain forced the IndyCar Series to move the race at World Wide Technology Raceway up from its 6.30 p.m and it was constantly on the minds of the strategy chiefs along pit lane as things unfolded and pole-sitter Will Power of Team Penske powered away from the field and the championship points leader looked like he was on his way to a maximum points haul sorta day -- until the first caution of the day flipped the script The team didn't tell me what the number was if we didn't pit Power stayed out as the race leader as Team Penske split their strategy for the first time by bringing in Newgarden and McLaughlin Power was never able to recover from that strategy call as his teammates ran away from the field McLaughlin got a terrific jump on the restart McLaughlin then had to go on the defensive against rookie David Malukas who somehow managed to make it work on the outside lane to get past for second on the final lap So that rainbow after the rain passed led to a checkered flag at the end of it for Newgarden who just improved his chance of ending up with that pot of gold for the winning the driver's championship the series turns westward for the final events on the calendar: the Grand Prix of Portland on Sept 4 and the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey on Sept Will Power came out of the Bommarito 500 still at the top the table in the drivers standings with 482 points but Josef Newgarden jumped to second at 479 Scott Dixon slipped to third at 468 but is still within striking distance as is his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Marcus Ericsson at 465 defending series champion Alex Palou (439) Scott McLaughlin (428) and Pato O'Ward (424) will all need a lot of help to really end up on the top step at the end of the season With only Portland and Laguna Seca left on the calendar but more importantly finishes of 13th and 26th Palou finished last year strong with a win at Portland and a second place at Laguna Seca and he would likely need to win at both this time out (plus have something happen to those drivers in front of him) to have a chance at successfully defending his series title.  Power's true threats likely lie with Newgarden (fifth and seventh last year at Portland and Laguna but any bad finish in those final two events will likely scupper their chances if Power finishes in the top five in both Power had said during the rain delay that he thought he had enough rubber left to hold position Behind the leaders Malukas and Power go side-by-side for lap before Malukas wins that battle which also allows Sato to work his way around Power And Newgarden powers past McLaughlin in a blink Newgarden is determined to get that third in a row at this track but McLaughlin will not simply go quietly into the night Track is green-green-green with 36 laps to go McLaughlin leads Newgarden and O'Ward is on the move Ganassi will pit his cars while the yellow is still out so here come some sticker tires and fuel for Dixon And trouble for Newgarden as he has stalled.  Team Penske hustles out and gets his Chevrolet-powered racer restarted and he is out on the track has a few lapped cars between him and the top 2 runners McLaughlin and Newgarden so look for O'Ward to be aggressive right at the restart as he will want to jump the lapped cars and start nipping at Newgarden's rear tires as soon as he can Drivers are being strapped into their cars so it looks like things are going to get rolling again at Madison Race control has told the teams they are clear to approach their cars in preparation for an anticipated restart the tires will be cold and need to come up to temperature The track will be cooler now that the sun has gone down and that won't help bring the tires up to temp straightaway Good news: The lightning hold has been lifted Should we go back to racing at WWT Raceway the drivers will be on a completely different track from what they were racing on not long ago Rain has washed away a lot of the rubber and marbles on the track and what the rain didn't get the jet dryers most certainly blew off as they circled trying to get the track dry The rain has lightened but lightning has been sighted So the track is under a 30-minute clock marking that lightning strike to the next The red flag is out and the cars will be called to pit lane as the rain is getting heavier Lap 215 and sprinkles have brought out the second caution of the race There are a lot of pit crew strategists down there exhaling in relief The pit cycle has finished with Rahal pitting and McLaughlin rolls into the lead with Newgarden half-a-second behind him Malukas is back out in fifth followed by Ericsson McLaughlin will pit as Team Penske keep Newgarden stays out for at least one more lap McLaughlin is back out on the track and here comes Newgarden And Newgarden comes back out on the track just behind McLaughlin Alejandro Medina Robles and Alejandro Luis Rubalcaba Four men Then he was told of the penalty to Leclerc and a slightly stunned if not confused Verstappen allowed himself a smile He was still questioning it all when the drivers went to the podium for the trophies to be awarded talking to Perez to find out what happened "I'm very proud to do it here," Verstappen said 23 at the Circuit of the Americas for the United States Grand Prix x-Five-second penalty for rough driving demotes Leclerc to third behind Perez Hamilton is trying his best but the takeaway here is that the Alpine just seems to have more straight-line speed than the Mercedes.  Could it be that Ocon is running less downforce Or does the Alpine mill produce that much more power than the Mercedes With 10 minutes to go Verstappen's lead at the front is up to 16-plus seconds on Leclerc with Perez closing on the Ferrari driver and Ocon trying to stay ahead of Hamilton it appears there will not be enough laps run for full points to be paid out meaning Verstappen will not be clinching a title on Sunday at Japan Leclerc has just pulled down the fastest lap of the race so Verstappen has some work cut out for him now.  The rain may just be what Ferrari needed to throw a wrench into the Red Bull championship train Leclerc gets past Schumacher to take over second but is 5-seconds adrift of Verstappen Williams radio Latifi that they are hoping the safety car will come out Verstappen and Leclerc are both pitting for internediates Red Bull gets Verstappen out quicker.  Alonso stays out and leads this race with 35 minutes to go Lando Norris and Valtteri Bottas both pit for intermediate tires Verstappen leads the way and there is quite a gap back to Leclerc as the Ferrari driver tires to clear Verstappen's rooster tail Vettel and Latifi both pit to put on intermediate tires immediately Lights are off on the safety car and it will head to the pits This race is going green-green-green very soon even though drivers in the pack are complaining about visibility The cars are gingerly heading back out onto the track behind the safety car There are still many "rivers" of water going across the track "The track looks pretty good," Lewis Hamilton radioed his Mercedes pit crew Two races into the 2022 Formula 1 season and there is no doubt that it will be at least a two-horse race -- and perhaps a four-horse race -- as Max Verstappen was able to get his Red Bull Racing car past the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in the final laps to snatch the race victory at the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia The win will help Verstappen and his team breathe a little easier as a double DNF at the season-opening race in Bahrain meant coupled with Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz Jr.'s one-two finish The gremlins that plagued Red Bull at Bahrain appear to have been vanquished for the moment grabbed the pole and was comfortably leading the race until a safety car period brought out by a hard crash from Nicholas Latifi in his Williams came just when Perez had pitted the Mexican driver had a safety car infraction with Sainz that resulted in him giving the Ferrari driver the top position and just like that Perez had dropped from first to fourth Leclerc inherited the lead with Verstappen right behind him and when a late virtual safety car period tightened up the field a bit The two traded positions several times before Verstappen was able to make it stick "It was a hard battle at the front," Verstappen said observing that the Ferrari cars "are quicker on the corners Leclerc appreciated the respect the two raced each other with and even radioed Verstappen after the finish to say as much but I really enjoyed that race," Leclerc said We were pushing like a have rarely pushed before It is a third consecutive podium for Leclerc's teammate and he said afterwards that he has found the rhythm of his car at Jeddah and that he also felt a bit bad for pole-sitter Sergio Perez of Red Bull "[Perez] got a little but unlucky with the safety car who then added that it was everything he could do to keep Perez behind him "[The Red Bull cars] were quicker than us after that and there have been multiple reasons presented The difference between Red Bull and Ferrari appears to be aero and downforce Red Bull looks to be running a smaller front wing for a looser car with Leclerc using a strategy of posting a big opening sector time and then holding on through the other two sectors where Verstappen and the Red Bulls are quicker Leclerc can't get the move done down the main straight Verstappen holds on for a half-second lead Green for the rest of the track as the yellow is a local one Alex Albon and Lance Stroll have collided and that has brought out the saving yellow for Red Bull Leclerc's turn to use the DRS down the main straight .. he can't quite get it done and Verstappen still holds the lead at Lap 48 Verstappen uses DRS to take the lead at Lap 47 Five to go and Leclerc leads Verstappen followed by Sainz
