Leverkusen, who had never lost a German Cup match under coach Xabi Alonso, were made to work hard before taking the lead in the 17th minute with Jonathan Tah's tap-in at the far post from a corner
Their joy only lasted three minutes with Marius Woerl beating keeper Lukas Hradecky with a low drive to draw the hosts level
Hradecky pulled off a spectacular save in the 26th when he blocked Sarenren Bazee's point-blank effort but Bielefeld's comeback was complete on the stroke of halftime with a close-range volley from Maximilian Grosser
The hosts were relentless, keeping up the pressure and carving out several chances after the break before Leverkusen's Patrik Schick hit the post with an 81st-minute header

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro urged the German Football Association (DFB) to “impose a penalty” on Arminia Bielefeld for not watering their pitch as the Bundesliga champions lost 2-1 to the third division side in the DFB-Pokal
Despite taking the lead through Jonathan Tah
Leverkusen lost to goals by Marius Worl and Maximilian Grosser
in one of the biggest shocks the competition has seen in recent years
Free flowing football is typically easier to play on a wet pitch
as it allows the ball to be passed and moved at greater speed
who won the Bundesliga and Pokal double last season
are one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Germany
with Xabi Alonso’s team favouring such a style of play
they were unable to enact it at the SchucoArena where the surface was noticeably worn and dry
“I was annoyed before the game that the pitch had not been watered,” Carro said
“I must speak to (Andreas) Rettig (DFB Managing Director for Sport) about that.”
“It was a collective failure,” Carro added
referring to a poor Leverkusen performance
“The expectation was that we would deliver our best performance today
it annoys me that the pitch wasn’t watered

a Leverkusen spokesperson said that Carro was in no way using the pitch to explain the loss
adding that he was expressing concerns he felt before the game began
was asked whether the pitch had been prepared in line with tournament regulations
who will now play in the final for the first time in their history
“We talked to the referee about it before the game
If the pitch has been watered in the morning
then it doesn’t need to be watered again (before the match)
“We don’t do that (water pitches before kick-off) for our league matches
We would be at a disadvantage if we watered the pitch.”
has never managed beyond 3.Liga level — was also asked about the dry pitch
“Those are our rules here,” he told journalists after the game
“We would also have liked one more day off,” he said
mischievously referring to the fact that Leverkusen had an extra 24 hours to prepare
Bielefeld drew 2-2 with Hannover’s II team on Saturday afternoon
The DFB did not respond to The Athletic’s request for comment
but regulations state that a pitch used for Pokal games must be watered on the day of the game
The competition — which is comprised of all 34 teams from the top two divisions
and 21 cup winners from regional associations — often sees big clubs travel to smaller
When Pep Guardiola was Bayern Munich head coach between 2013 and 2016
his side would periodically find their quick
possession-based football stymied by bone-dry pitches during the early rounds
Guardiola’s Bayern won the Pokal in two of his three seasons
but it is an established tactic for levelling the figurative playing field and Leverkusen are not the first Bundesliga team to encounter it

More final for the first time club history
Arminia Bielefeld has shocked Bayer Leverkusen to reach the DFB Pokal final for the first time in club history
Liga side beat the German champion and DFB Pokal title defender 2-1 thanks to goals by Marius Wörl (20’) and Maximilian Großer (45+3’)
Jonathan Tah’s early lead (17’) would ultimately not be enough for Leverkusen
"I am so proud of the team," Bielefeld head coach Michel Kniat said
Bielefeld becomes just the fourth third-division club to reach the DFB Pokal finale
The other third-division clubs were Hertha Berlin II in 1994
All three eventually lost the final against Bundesliga sides
and Union Berlin was defeated by Schalke (2-0)

it didn’t feel like Bielefeld was a club playing two divisions below Leverkusen
The team in blue outworked Leverkusen and had the better chances
finishing the game with a higher xG (1.43 to 0.95) than the visitors
The game would finish with a pretty even 48-52% split in possession and eight to 13 shots on goal
with Bielefeld completing 226 of 360 passes versus Leverkusen’s 243 of 382
Bielefeld deserves the chance to play for the club’s first-ever major title in Berlin
It would also qualify Bielefeld for a European club competition for the first time in club history
Even more critical are the financials. German magazine Kicker reported on Tuesday that Bielefeld’s run to the semifinal has already earned the club €7.5 million ($8.1 million)
Reaching the final guarantees another €2.88 million ($3.1 million)
which would grow to €4.32 million ($4.66 million) should Bielefeld win the final
The two final participants also receive a share of the ticket sales
the income from the game could grow to around €12 million ($13 million)
If Bielefeld wins the title, it will qualify for the Europa League league phase. According to Swiss Ramble
Hoffenheim earned €12 million ($13 million) from playing in the Europa League league phase last season

Germany (AP) — Arminia Bielefeld pulled off a major upset in the German Cup on Tuesday by defeating defending champion Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in their semifinal match
The third-division team came from behind after Jonathan Tah gave the visitors a 17th-minute lead
Marius Wörl replied three minutes later and Maximilian Großer scored Bielefeld’s second goal just before the break

“I’m just proud of this team,” Bielefeld coach Mitch Kniat said as most of the fans the small stadium sang around him

the DFB Pokal once again has a wonderful underdog story in the form of Arminia Bielefeld
Liga (third division) side beat Bundesliga club Werder Bremen 2-1 thanks to goals by Marius Wörl (35’) and an own goal by Julian Malatini (41’)
Oliver Burke halved the lead in the second half
Werder became the third Bundesliga side to fall to Arminia this season
After knocking out Hannover 96 in the first round (2-0)
Bielefeld eliminated Union Berlin (2-0) and then SC Freiburg (3-1) to reach the quarterfinals of the competition
The win over Werder on Tuesday marks Bielefeld’s first appearance in the semifinal since the 2014/15 season
But history could repeat itself if Wolfsburg beat RB Leipzig in the final quarterfinal on Wednesday morning
The other two clubs that have already advanced are VfB Stuttgart and last year’s winners Bayer Leverkusen
Bielefeld would be a significant underdog against any of those teams
No third-division team has reached the final since Union Berlin’s 2-0 defeat to Schalke in 2001

Die Arminen pulled off another sensational upset
winning 2-1 to book their place in the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club's history
The match started to the favorites' liking as Jonathan Tah put Bayer Leverkusen ahead in the 17th minute
Amine Adli nodded the ball to the back post for the centre-back to slot home
But Arminia responded immediately and equalised through Marius Wörl
Piero Hincapie failed to deal with a cross and the ball fell to the 20-year-old
who buried it into the bottom corner.
Liga side came close to taking the lead midway through the first half when Noah Sarenren Bazee found himself one-on-one with Lukas Hradecky
but his shot was saved by the Finnish goalkeeper
with Maximilian Grosser poking the ball into the roof of the net at the back post from a free-kick just before half-time
The home side continued to cause the champions problems after the break
and for much of the second half it looked more likely that they would extend their lead than that Leverkusen would equalise
Arminia almost made it 3-1 when Joel Gradowski shot just wide in the 69th minute
Jonas Kersken was forced to make a fine reflex save to deny Victor Boniface from making it 2-2
Die Werkself came closer to levelling the scores as the game wore on

The romantic notion that the world contains pristine wilderness

A California traffic island displays another knotty
The viewer directly experiences the tension between the natural and the manufactured
Bielefeld also describes how these quasi-natural environments breed their own ecosystems
insects and plants that can thrive even in these pocket-sized biomes
As much as I was drawn into these photos by their subject matter

and most likely breathed a sigh of relief after avoiding RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart in the semifinals draw
at first it seemed Leverkusen was going to do what they were expected to do when they took the lead through Jonathan Tah in the 17th minute
and the champions’ lead vanished in a mere three minutes when Marius Wörl tied the score
Leverkusen were expected to pick up the pace soon enough
Yet the game really became crazy when the home side took a shock lead through a well taken set piece
evidence that the two teams were separated by two divisions
Bielefeld did not hide from the champions and took the game to them directly
They recorded an impressive eight shots to Leverkusen’s 13
and were only one shot on goal behind Leverkusen’s four attempts
they did close up shop in the dying minutes like any other team would
but also managed to launch some vicious counterattacks that Leverkusen was barely able to parry
Six minutes of stoppage time were given to the visitors
but Xabi Alonso’s side’s nasty habit of scoring late goals failed them for once
and they did not have a single clear cut chance in those precious minutes
it was actually the underdogs who came closer to scoring
Bielefeld had reached the Pokal final for the first time in their history
and became only the fourth third-division side (after Energie Cottbus
The last non-first division team to reach the final was FC Kaiserslautern last year
while the last one to win it was Kickers Offenbach in 1970
they currently remain the only side to have achieved such a feat
No third division team has won the Pokal so far
they need to maintain their place in the 3
Liga or win the Westphallen Pokal to qualify for the next edition of the tournament
So there could be a crazy situation where the defending champion does not even get a chance to defend their title
The 30-year-old played collegiately in the U.S.
was released by New York Red Bulls and is now on brink of career-defining success
Arminia Bielefeld were supposed to have their own area to celebrate. So much for that. The third-division German team had just knocked off Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal semifinal
and the city had allocated them a separate space to take it all in
when the idea was floated to phone up a stadium employee
four hours after the final whistle - and long before the reality of victory had sunk in - the team returned to the SchucoArena
And at the center of it all was the captain
"I haven't been that drunk in a while," Corboz told GOAL
and largely anonymous in the American soccer system that shaped him
he had stints at Rutgers and Maryland before moving to Europe
more than 10 years into his professional career
he is enjoying his biggest moment yet - leading the charge in one of German soccer's greatest underdog stories
so European football was always present in my head
did you ever think you would play against Bayer Leverkusen
did you ever think you would beat them?' " Corboz says with amazement

Hradecky pulled off a spectacular save when he blocked Sarenren Bazee’s point-blank effort but Bielefeld’s comeback was complete on the stroke of half-time with a close-range volley from Maximilian Grosser

“We were missing all our usual strengths,” said the Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich

Having eliminated three Bundesliga sides - Union Berlin

Liga side Arminia Bielefeld are now just one step away from the final
the semi-final arguably represents the toughest step yet
as Michél Kniat's side welcome reigning German double winners Bayer Leverkusen to the SchücoArena on Tuesday night
"Leverkusen is probably the toughest task of all
But we want to do everything we can to reach the cup final," said Arminia's sporting managing director
can take heart from the fact that they're on a three-match unbeaten run after a 2-2 draw with Hannover 96's second team at the weekend
But they will need an exceptional performance to upset the champions
who are coming off the back of a 3-1 win over Bochum
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso knows his side are heavy favorites
"It is another great opportunity for us to reach a final
But we have a lot of respect for Bielefeld
expect a tough opponent and know that the cup can be a crazy competition
We have to play well," Xabi Alonso said on Monday
Arminia Bielefeld will be without Nassim Boujellab (knee) and Roberts Uldrikis (knee)
Leverkusen are without long-term absentees Jeanuel Belocian (knee)
Martin Terrier (Achilles) as well as Florian Wirtz (ankle) and Edmond Tapsoba (hamstring).
Nathan Tella will be back in the squad if he has no problems in the final training session
Matej Kovar could replace Lukas Hradecky in goal

It’s David versus Goliath – but this time Arminia Bielefeld have the opportunity to dethrone the greatest Goliath of all.
The 3.Liga side host reigning 2024-25 DFB-Pokal winners Bayer Leverkusen tomorrow
and head coach Mitch Kniat prepared for the battle
“We wanted to write our own cup history from the beginning
and we expect that there will be another chapter to add.
We have to be there as a team exactly when we need to be,” Kniat explained
The Bielefeld gaffer is under no illusions of the task that awaits them
but they have dumped out three Bundesliga sides on their way thus far.
Now in the club’s fourth-ever semi-final since 1935
history finally beckons – a win takes Die Arminen to their first ever German cup final.
With only Roberts Uldrikis (cruciate ligament tear) absent
a clean bill of health and a voracious atmosphere sets the bedrock for another riveting night at the SchucoArena.

is hosting a three-day conference on models of change
Credit: Photo: Bielefeld University/Patrick Pollmeier
Scientific models differ greatly in the natural sciences
both in terms of their characteristics as well as their applications – which complicates interdisciplinary collaboration
‘Building Models of Change: Bridging Sciences and Humanities’ comes in
bringing together leading researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss these issues from 12 until 14 March at Bielefeld University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF)
Conference participants will critically examine how scientific models can be applied to current challenges
The conference will serve as more than just a forum for discussion – it is also intended to provide insights for political and social decision-making
The spectrum of discussion topics will range from biological process to models for understanding the processes of historical change
‘If we do not figure out how to combine the insights of different scientific disciplines
we will fail to address the pressing issues of our times,’ warns Professor Dr Angelika Epple
She is a member of the ‘Theoretical University’ working group
This conference will provide a unique opportunity to move towards a more comprehensive understanding of scientific models
this understanding could help inform future decision-making in politics and society
‘The conference will be an important step towards a culture of scientific re-search marked by cooperation rather than divi-sion,’ explains Epple
Among the 12 conference speakers is Professor Dr Wolfgang Knöbl
who serves as Director of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research
He will discuss the challenges of creating models in the social sciences
a researcher in the field of resilience at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands
will speak about the role of models of resilience in predicting and managing social change
while Professor Dr Andreas Diekmann from the ETH Zurich
will address the development of models in sociology
The conference will be divided into three thematic sections that will focus on specific modelling challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective
The aim is to explore how modelling practices differ across disciplines and discover what connects them
The first section of the conference is dedicated to the following question: do the natural and social sciences share a common understanding of models
This will include considerations of the role of generalizations as well as how respective disciplines pursue theoretical goals
The aim will be to better understand how changes are modelled in both the natural sciences and the humanities
This also includes models of social change as well as conceptual models
The third section of the conference considers change in uncertainty research
The goal here will be to develop new approaches that can be used to model ways of dealing with uncertainty in processes of change
with the aim of gaining greater insight into modern societies and social change
The conference is aimed at an interdisciplinary audience
all speakers will provide a definition and explanation of the term “model” as they use it in their research,’ explains Rector Angelika Epple
The conference ties in with ‘The Theoretical University’ anniversary conference
which was hosted in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of Bielefeld University
researchers came together to discuss the significance and development of theories in various disciplines
Another important topic here was the growing influence of Big Data
The upcoming conference is being organised by the ‘Theoretical University’ working group
which was founded in the wake of the university’s 50th anniversary
The working group includes researchers from various faculties who wanted to continue the conversation of scientific topics from the university anniversary activities from an interdisciplinary approach
Liga outfit Arminia Bielefeld will be fired up to cause an upset when they host reigning German double winners Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal semi-final on Tuesday night
With just around an hour to go until kick-off

Mitsubishi HiTec Paper Europe GmbH (MPE) has announced plans to restructure and continue operations at its Bielefeld paper mill
which specialises in the production of thermal
The company has committed to engaging in close dialogue with the works council and trade unions as it undertakes the transformation. Recent concerns had been raised over a potential significant downsizing of the site
told EUWID: “It is possible to transform the company into a profitable business
fundamentally reviewing all processes to improve efficiency
making effective use of competitive assets
and focusing on profitable markets and products.”
Despite a challenging business environment
shaped in part by historical structural burdens and numerous current economic pressures
MPE is working towards sustainably increasing the profitability of the Bielefeld mill
this will necessitate fundamental changes on multiple levels
“I firmly believe that the Bielefeld site can be revitalised,” Mizushima continued
“My plan is to carry out the necessary restructuring measures as socially responsibly as possible
in full compliance with all legal requirements
and to maintain a constructive dialogue with the works council and trade unions
we will transition to a new structure as quickly as possible and reshape the business into a competitive and sustainable company – one that continues to contribute to the Bielefeld community

After missing Bayer Leverkusen's last two games due to a muscle injury, Nathan Tella is expected to return to the German champions' squad for Tuesday's DFB-Pokal semi-final against Arminia Bielefeld
Bayer 04 coach Xabi Alonso announced at a press conference on Monday that Tella is now doing “much better”
but pointed out that the final training session ahead of the match was still to come
he will be in the squad," said Xabi Alonso
the game comes too soon for both Edmond Tapsoba (thigh) and Florian Wirtz (ankle)
Tapsoba could possibly be back this weekend against Heidenheim
while there is hope that Wirtz could return to the squad for the game against Union Berlin on April 12.
