“We have always been and will always be a large Flender family,” said Flender CEO Andreas Evertz at the recent grand anniversary party at the main site in Bocholt, Germany. “Whether employees, customers, suppliers, partners, or owners—today we all feel like Flenderans. I am incredibly proud to be part of this team and to advance the energy transition with you. Because without drive technology and Flender, nothing moves in this world.”
The anniversary party in Bocholt kicked off celebrations at all worldwide Flender locations throughout the year. The leaders of the 33 national representations came to Bocholt and were on the large stage with their national flags. Just like the Olympic flame, they now take the spirit of the celebration to their Flender locations.
At the family day, many employees took the opportunity to show their families and friends the production halls at the Bocholt site. One of the highlights was the hardening processes in the company’s own hardening shop. Visitors crowded behind the barriers, especially the children, who watched as the red-hot, 900-degree Celsius gears produced meter-high flames when cooled in the oil bath.

INTERCEPTED is a documentary film from the year 2024 from Canada
What drives people to invade another country and start a war
The film "INTERCEPTED" explores this question and shows two parallel worlds
The audience is shown images of destruction in slow tracking shots
houses and streets after their liberation from Russian occupation
We take a closer look: What we see is not destruction and death
but landscapes that are being filled with life again
The film conveys hope - and tackles the numbness caused by the mass of horrific images in the media
It provides a framework for the flood of images
The soundtrack stands in shocking contrast to the visual material
The film is accompanied by recordings of telephone conversations between Russian soldiers in the trenches in Ukraine and their families
which were intercepted by the Ukrainian secret service in 2022
It is difficult to decide which is more disturbing: the soldiers' confessions of having raped
robbed and brutally tortured Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war
or the (mainly) female voices "at home" exposed to chauvinism and hatred
disinformation and schizophrenic propaganda
Sound and image collide perplexingly - only the filmic path makes it possible to bring them together

Pupils from Haslingden High School in the twin town of Rossendale experience eventful days in Bocholt // Cooperation with Mariengymnasium
The last time a group of pupils from Haslingden High School visited Bocholt was in 2017
During the mayor's delegation visit in June this year
the resumption of school partnerships was discussed
Bocholt has now welcomed a group of pupils from Rossendale
At the official reception at Mariengymnasium
Gudrun Koppers emphasised the importance of exchanges for young people
Dialogue to maintain or achieve peace "is indispensable"
Koppers emphasised the importance of international relations
Headmistress Ruth Sonntag emphasised that Mariengymnasium very much welcomed the new relationship with Haslingden High School
The English pupils enjoyed a varied programme: After the reception at St Mary's Grammar School
the guests went to lessons with their German partners
The English pupils spent the afternoon on a city rally in the town centre
the Rossendal students were given a guided tour of the LWL industrial museum Texwilwerk Bocholt Weberei and then relaxed with a spot of bowling
The day ended with a joint visit by the Bocholt and Rossendal pupils to the Inselbad Bahia swimming pool
who had previously experienced exchanges in Bocholt herself
Together with Bocholt headmistress Sonntag
Connor believes that this year's school visit was the starting signal for the revitalisation of a lasting school partnership

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself
I run the Tourist Information Centre here in Bocholt
so I’m very closely connected to the topic of traveling
I’ve been working there for 25 years now
and I really like it because I get to meet a lot of different people and can give them advice about what to explore in Bocholt
I’ve gotten to know the whole area quite well
whether someone prefers to be in nature or experience culture
I work in tourism and find it quite exciting to get to know people
I’d really like to run a small guest house
I kind of get to live this dream of mine in a way through hosting now
When we bought the house that we live in now 9 years ago
I wanted to start welcoming guests right away
But our children were still living here with us and our life was very busy
my children moved out to study and I suddenly had living space left over so to speak
I thought to myself: now I can finally make my dream come true and welcome guests at my place
I also think that it is a waste of living space if the rooms are left empty
and I am fortunate to be able to share my space
it was an office room that we no longer needed
This is the smallest of the three rooms we offer on Airbnb
which means that we always live in a shared living space
And the really exciting thing about sharing our space is that we can get to know the people who are our guests – if they are open to that
Of course we’ve also had guests who simply want to stay in their room
but that is not the concept that we are trying to pursue
It’s more like “leave the door open if you want
I can also give lots of tips for excursions in the area
because it’s the job that I’ve been doing for 25 years and I really enjoy it
My two children moved out one after the other
after he started to visit us back home less and less frequently
Because we are actually often fully booked
What fascinated me from the start was that you have a connection with 90% of the guests straight away
because it is a different way of traveling – they don’t have a holiday apartment and live in our house
We’ve actually had quite a few guests that we developed close friendships with over the years
so if you feel like coming to Stuttgart or something
And we’ve followed through on some of these invitations
who eventually found a job as a heart surgeon in East Germany
She lived with us for quite some time and we became friends
and she insisted that we come to her town and stay in her guestroom
You get to know such nice people and have great experiences
is that you can earn money through Hosting
The money we earned so far has absolutely helped us to pay off the loan on our house here
It also helps me in a way that I don’t have to worry that at some point our finances will be super tight
as Hosting allows us to put some money aside for when we need it
Has the personal or financial impact of Hosting on your life changed in recent years
due to Covid or the current cost-of-living crisis
the money we earn from Hosting is really a financial cushion that I can put aside for when we need it
our fridge broke down and we had to buy a new one. The money was there and we knew that we could afford to replace the broken fridge
Knowing what expenses one has to pay every month
especially now that prices are shooting through the roof – food
I had to put a cap on the room temperature
because I know that the next bill is coming
I have prepared a manual that I place in every guest’s room
with useful tips on how to use the stove efficiently and how to recycle
I’ve also had to ensure guests do not leave the heating on when they leave their room and go to work for 8 hours
But if guests don’t stick to this rule
I won’t be able to keep these low prices anymore
I will have to make the rooms more expensive
and I really don’t want to do that because I want to give students and people who don’t have much money the opportunity to stay overnight in an affordable and nice environment
Tell us about the guests that come and stay with you here in Bocholt
We have a lot of different types of guests: holidaymakers
who booked our room precisely because there is a person behind it
and they knew that they could talk to someone in the evening and not just sit alone in their hotel room after work
So there are all sorts of people who come here for a holiday
People from all backgrounds with different motivations – some from Gemany
who is currently traveling through Europe and wants to get to know traditional local dishes
These are some of my favourite experiences
who only stayed with us the first time around because all the guest houses in the area were fully booked
he comes to stay with us every 6 weeks or so
He really likes it here because he says that it’s like a flat share
And that’s exactly what he likes so much: he comes into the kitchen or we sit in the living room and we can have a chat there
We’ve had some very nice evenings in the garden with our guests
I always like to make time for the guests when I’m not working
What impact do short-term rentals have on your area
there are limitations on short-term rentals
to avoid the kind of situations where people with a lot of money would buy up apartments with the intention of marketing them professionally
we don’t have these kinds of regulations because this problem doesn’t exist here
I make my living space available to others
And I don’t steal a night’s stay from any hotel or campsite either
because staying at an Airbnb is a completely different kind of travel
let’s not forget that my guests spend money in the city
they are out and about and spending their money all over town – they go out to eat
go to the museum or go into town and do some shopping
Whether they are staying in a hotel or with me
welcoming visitors is a mutual cross-fertilization between them and the city

Re-tendering necessary // New start date is March 2025
The refugee accommodation in Bocholt-Biemenhorst - in the northern part of the street "Auf dem Takenkamp" - will go into operation from March 2025
The city of Bocholt had to adjust its planning due to a company insolvency
It was originally planned to go into operation this year
The city of Bocholt has started to temporarily build a refugee facility for up to 250 people on the site after a referendum was held on the matter almost a year ago in October 2023
The use as refugee accommodation is limited until the end of 2027
after which the site will be available as building land
The development and civil engineering work is already being considered with this subsequent use in mind
The now delayed commissioning of the refugee accommodation has no impact on this timeline
The reason for the new start date: the company that had been awarded the contract for the production and heating supply of the mobile housing units - the city buys the mobile housing units - has had to file for insolvency and is therefore no longer able to deliver
The administration then cancelled the contract and immediately put the service out to tender again
Around 72,000 people live in the largest city in the Borken district // Slight increase compared to 2011
The results of the latest population statistics
the census shows that the population has remained almost constant in recent years
a total of 71,985 people lived in Bocholt - that's 432 more or an increase of 0.6% compared to the update based on the 2011 census
Women make up the majority of the population with 36,612
German citizenship was held by 65,436 people; 6,548 had foreign citizenship
The age group of 40 to 59-year-olds is the most strongly represented with 20,411 people
Senior citizens over the age of 60 are also well represented (20,969 people)
Children and young people up to the age of 18 numbered around 13,178
Over 37,000 people in Bocholt are in gainful employment
with the majority (24,600) working in the service sector
Around two thirds of the approximately 33,000 households are single and two-person households
There are almost 35,000 flats (32,700) in around 21,000 residential buildings (2011: around 19,800)
The detached house is the preferred form of housing ahead of semi-detached and terraced houses
The first detailed statistics on the census will be published today, Tuesday 25 June 2024, by the federal and state statistical offices at www.zensus2022.de. A census atlas offers the opportunity to view the statistical results as interactive graphics (htpps://atlas.zensus2022.de)
The next statistical forecasts are expected at the end of the year
The city of Bocholt currently assumes that a further slight increase in the population can be expected
This statistical survey determines how many people live in Germany and how they live and work
state and local level are based on population and housing figures
The last census in Germany took place in 2022

The results of the entire branding process were presented to the public on 17 April at 7 pm in the council chamber of the historic town hall
both Peter Pirck (Brandmeyer Markenberatung) and Prof Dr Sebastian Zenker (Copenhagen Business School) presented the results and the essence of the "Bocholt" brand
which around 2000 participants identified by taking part in the online survey at the beginning of the year
They are the core of the Bocholt city brand
It was an insightful and interesting evening in which over 100 interested Bocholters took part
The core of the Bocholt city brand and the presentation of the results can be downloaded below
The results presentation is available for download in the area below
Büro Brandmeyer was selected and commissioned by the Supervisory Board of Wirtschaftsförderungs- und Stadtmarketing Geslleschaft Bocholt in a selection process in April 2023
With the question "Do you feel Bocholt?" we started the search for the Bocholt brand together with a kick-off event in September
Over 170 people interested in Bocholt accepted our invitation
joined in the discussion and got a feel for the topic
interviews with people from Bocholt's urban society and brand camps for different target groups with committed participation took place
Three formats that clearly illustrate the citizen participation process
In the fourth format - the online survey - questions were asked about your personal perception of Bocholt based on the results of the interviews and brand camps
This was not about your knowledge of Bocholt
All results from the four participation formats were analysed and the DNA of the Bocholt brand was worked out
The aim was and is to reinforce the strengths and convey Bocholt's attitude to life with a clear city brand

The film series "KINO Bocholt - the special film" has been running since 1977 as a cooperation between the Department of Education and Culture and Kinodrom Bocholt
City wants to collect suggestions and proposals from children // Survey last conducted in 2016
The wishes and needs of the people of Bocholt are discussed almost daily on the political stage and in the media
does this enquiry extend to the youngest in our society
In order to also gather criticism and suggestions from Bocholt's children of primary school age
The city of Bocholt conducts the survey at all Bocholt primary schools
needs and interests of the boys and girls are asked and collected
realisable measures are to be developed on the basis of the survey
The kick-off event at the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff primary school was also attended by Bocholt's mayor Thomas Kerkhoff
"In order for us to be able to do something for you
we need to know what you think is missing so far," he explained to the boys and girls who were allowed to present their proposals that morning
he listened together with representatives of the council parties and city departments as the children presented their wishes
Many of the suggestions made that day related to the leisure time facilities for boys and girls of primary school age
additional playgrounds or certain restaurants and shops were desired
but also more offers for sustainability and less waste
Which measures can be implemented in concrete terms is what the next step is about"
It is about taking the wishes and realities of life of the boys and girls seriously
Due to the corona-related contact restrictions
there have been no children's conferences in the past two years
They are organised and conducted by the Department of Youth
Ivan Mihalj is a deputy member of the integration council of the city of Bocholt
spoke to him and would like to introduce him here
When Ivan Mihalj starts talking about integration and acceptance
He has been caring for his severely disabled daughter since the death of his wife Marina
He has been a member of the Integration Council since 2009
At first he stood as a candidate on the European list
then he was also active as an individual candidate
in this period he is - as a deputy - again part of the European list
"I notice that when I return to the "homeland"
This came about when his parents swapped houses during the Balkan War and he "ended up" in Croatia
anything was possible there during the war
He was 32 years old when he came to Germany
He had already gained his first experience as a student
He first noticed the punctuality and accuracy and sometimes wondered
"I was a guest at the Kolpinghaus and was totally surprised that a couple each had a lid for themselves at the counter
One thing in particular is important for integration: language
"I always recommend to anyone who comes to me from the former Yugoslavia to learn the language
You have no chance without the language," Mihalj is sure
"It is difficult for older people to learn the German language
It is always important to make clear to yourself why you are coming to Germany
When he visited his birthplace for the first time in twenty years
"Ivan are you coming back?" The answer was clear: "NO
and I'll tell you why: because of their common history
they are no longer the people who used to be there
all people who come to Germany must be accepted
the people who have come to Germany should also accept the language
but it is possible." The person with an international family history must also learn and understand German history
This should also be a topic in school and subsequent education
For people with an international family history
Mihalj would like it to be easier for them to get housing
Ivan Mihalj came to the Integration Council through Emanuele Mascolo
"He asked me and in the end convinced me that things are democratic in Germany
so to speak - I let the young people (he means Ivica Mazar in this case) take the lead
He believes that the cooperation between the city council and the integration council could be improved
but that it is currently on the right track
he demands more rights and more participation
Ivan Mihalj wants people with international family histories to be truly welcomed
I show you how I am and how I live and you show me how you live and we find a way together," Mihalj knows how it can work and is sure that mutual exchange makes everyone richer
"This is what the world must look like: In front of me is a person with worries
I like to help and win friends with my help."

The Bocholt city bus can now also be used for journeys in the early morning and late evening: The journey times have been significantly extended
This should benefit commuting citizens in particular
StadtBus Bocholt GmbH is implementing one of the central demands of the city's mobility concept - to offer working people and schoolchildren a mobility alternative
from Monday to Friday so that the S75 line (Sprinterbus)
can be reached by city bus from all areas of the city
The extension also means a big plus for working people who start work at 6 am
There are also significant improvements for Saturdays: Buses will start an hour earlier from 6.30 am and will now run until 7 pm
but is also a gain for leisure transport at the weekend
the basic timetable frequency (30 or 60 minutes depending on the line
C13 every 40/20 minutes) remains unchanged
The additional personnel required for the transport service was realised by the contracted company WB Westfalen Bus GmbH despite the currently very tight situation on the labour market
the changes mean around 8,500 additional timetable hours per year
"The additional personnel required for this in the driving service could be realised by the commissioned company WB Westfalen Bus GmbH despite the currently very tight situation on the labour market," announces Stadt Bus Bocholt GmbH
Westfalen Bus made "considerable efforts in advance to implement the final resolution passed by the Bocholt city council in February as quickly as possible
contrary to the general trend of service cuts in public transport due to a shortage of drivers"
Due to the extended journey times of the city and taxi buses
the service offered by the call-and-collect taxi (AST) is limited
as the previous rule still applies here: the AST always runs when the city and taxi buses are no longer running
the service will be available from Monday to Friday from around 9.30 pm to 00.45 am
on Saturdays from 7.30 pm to 00.45 am and on Sundays (unchanged) from 9.30 am to 00.45 am every hour after advance booking by telephone
All information on journey times and routes can be found on the StadtBus Bocholt website.

There will soon be new rental flats for young adults and students in Bocholt's Kubaai. Bocholt-based Thomas Duvenbeck Invest GmbH is planning a new building next to the Lernwerk, which will reconcile the history of the textile mill with requirements for modern living.
Investor Thomas Duvenbeck (2nd from right), project manager Lena Hülscher (right) as well as (from left) Peter Tautz, managing director of Stadtquartiere Bocholt GmbH, kubaai project coordinator Udo Geidies, city planning officer Daniel Zöhler and mayor Thomas Kerkhoff.
The building project is called "TOHUUS" and will provide modern one-bedroom living facilities, geared to the needs of students and young adults. "We are combining attractive living space in a good location with the feeling of being at home," says investor Thomas Duvenbeck.
Together with a local architecture studio and property developer, 50 residential units are to be built, giving the historically shaped area even more character with urban living concepts, while meeting modern comfort and quality requirements at rental prices in line with the market, says the investor.
"The project fits perfectly into the concept of our cultural quarter, both architecturally and in terms of its orientation towards young adults and students. This will make KuBAai even more attractive as a future cultural focal point of the city of Bocholt," says Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff.
"Student housing is the perfect complement next to the Lernwerk," says city building officer Daniel Zöhler as well. "I am particularly pleased with the architectural harmony in the interplay with the Lernwerk and the great inner courtyard that will be created around the chimney," says Zöhler.
The planned residential building is to be built on the rear construction site, which borders the Lernwerk to the north-east, directly next to the new hotel building that is also planned. The investor wants to develop the project according to the guiding principle "Simple. Better. Live. realise.
