Whenever my wife and I visit the United States
Rabbi Boruch and Rivka Bodenheim in Passaic
the assistant rosh yeshivah of Passaic Torah Institute (PTI)
Rav Singer recently passed away at the age of 91 (his shloshim falls out on the 13th of Teves)
Rabbi Bodenheim shared memories from his many years teaching Torah at his father-in-law’s side
Rav Shlomo Zalman Singer was a legend in Passaic
when he was hired to serve as the chazzan at Adas Israel
He also ran the local Talmud Torah and Hebrew school
so Rabbi Singer established NCSY for the public school kids
Rav Meir Stern established his yeshivah in Passaic in 1973
Rabbi Singer knew him from BMG and went out of his way to attend his shiurim for the next 25 years
He then taught those shiurim to anyone capable of understanding them
Rabbi Singer retired from chazzanus in 1996 and opened Passaic Torah Institute (PTI)
which offered a wide range of shiurim geared to working men
Rabbi Singer spread Yiddishkeit in Passaic for close to six decades
Close to 300 people currently learn at PTI at least once a week
What follows is the reminiscence of my cousin
he received a call from the father of a longtime talmid
“My 19-year-old granddaughter just returned from seminary
I’m not young and I want to see my grandchildren get married and start families of their own.”
Rabbi Singer assured the man he would help
my shver dialed the number of Rav Malkiel Kotler
explaining that he had been a close talmid of Rav Aharon
and he asked Rav Malkiel for help in finding a shidduch for this girl
and he called Rabbi Shlomo Lewenstein (one of the big shadchanim in Lakewood) and explained the situation
Rabbi Lewenstein called the girl’s mother a short while later and advised her to send her daughter the next day to a private meeting of shadchanim
Although the girl’s eventual shidduch came about through a different channel
nobody who heard the story could forget the extent my father-in-law went to help a talmid
After attending some shiurim in the yeshivah
he felt an instant connection with Rabbi Singer and decided to move to Passaic
Aharon asked her to look for a house for him to buy in the yeshivah’s neighborhood
So when a suitable house came on the market during Chol Hamoed Pesach
Rebbetzin Singer called him up and told him to come right away to see it
Aharon apologized and said it was too much trouble to fly to Passaic on such short notice
Rebbetzin Singer was a laid-back kind of person and didn’t push him further
But her husband overheard the conversation and immediately called the young man
You need to get on a plane and come see this house
There was no way Aharon would turn down his rebbi
“I booked my ticket for the next day,” he later said
“and flew out to Passaic to look at the house
Rebbetzin Singer was right — it was just what I needed
I made an offer and flew back to Texas that night
told me of an encounter he had at the PTI dinner one year with an unfamiliar
distinguished-looking man who turned out to be a rosh kollel from Eretz Yisrael
Reb Tovia asked the man how he had come to be taking part in the dinner
The man explained that he was there because Rav Singer had saved him
“It happened a short while after my family moved to Passaic
One Shabbos morning I was standing on the corner smoking a cigarette
Rav Singer passed by and warmly wished me a good Shabbos
“‘Would you like to learn Torah with me?’ he asked
would you care to join us for a Shabbos seudah?’
My family and I became regular guests at your parents’ home
I grew close with Rav Singer and eventually became shomer Torah u’mitzvos and went off to yeshivah
Your father’s Shabbos invitation changed all of our lives.”
shver used to be a driver for Rav Moshe Feinstein
my brother-in-law got in trouble at school and the principal kicked him out
My father-in-law was driving Rav Moshe that day
and he mentioned to the gadol hador that his son had just been expelled from yeshivah
and when the rebbeim saw Rav Moshe emerging from the car
After greeting everyone with his trademark warmth
Rav Moshe asked to be taken to the principal’s office
“We are so honored that the Rosh Yeshivah came to visit us,” the principal said
“Is it true that you threw a boy out of the yeshivah?”
The principal was taken aback and tried to explain the reasoning behind the decision — but Rav Moshe would have none of it and demanded that the boy be allowed back
My shver would go on to cite this story many times
Whenever he heard that a boy had been thrown out of yeshivah
he would contact the principal and tell him this story
Besides making sure all boys had places to learn
Rabbi Singer would offer to learn with him one-on-one
“Rabbi Singer taught me to love learning Torah,” one talmid said
“He used to learn with me every week for well over an hour
Today I love learning Torah because of him.”
one of his old-time talmidim would stay with him when needed
the same talmid went again to stay with him at the hospital
he saw that Rabbi Singer’s yarmulke had fallen under the bed
Rabbi Singer passed away that Motzaei Shabbos
the talmid had the following thought: “I didn’t grow up in a frum family
It was Rabbi Singer who put a yarmulke on my head
I had the zechus of putting a yarmulke on my rebbi’s head

Born in Oklahoma, Ryan spent the majority of his life in Ohio. A self-taught artist, his foremost passion was telling stories in the comic medium. Throughout his career making comics, he illustrated and co-created several creator-owned series with Jonathan Hickman such as The Dying and The Dead, A Red Mass for Mars, and Secret. He also worked on Valiant titles such as XO Manowar, Bloodshot, and Ninjak.
While at Marvel, he penciled titles such as FEAR ITSELF: FEARSOME FOUR, BLACK PANTHER with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuña on “The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda” run, and contributed to the seminal IMMORTAL HULK series with Al Ewing. He most recently worked on DEATH OF DOCTOR STRANGE: AVENGERS and the third Eternals Special ETERNALS: THE UNDYING with Kieron Gillen.
Bodenheim was known for his love of comics, his wit, and intelligence, along with his love and knowledge of music and movies. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and fans, and his work will continue to inspire the comic book community for years to come.

Yesterday, Bleeding Cool shared the news about the passing of Ryan "Bode" Bodenheim at the age of 44
managing to get an errant publisher in his past to pay up what was owed
as well as a phenomenal comic book creator
That feeling was shared across the industry
as those who knew him and worked with him shared their memories of the man on social media
Kieron Gillen: Hearing about the sudden death of Ryan was just heartbreaking
worldbuilding and character design for years – his work with Hickman is great
Alex Paknadel: Working with Ryan will always be a highlight of my career
and – selfishly – I'm so sad I won't get to thank him in person for the incredible work he did on our one shot
Marc Guggenheim: What a gut-wrenching way to receive this gut-wrenching news
Ryan Bodenheim was a tremendous talent and human being; someone who I expected to see again and work with again for years to come
I can't imagine what his family is going through right now—sending my love to them and everyone else who knew him
He was one of the first professionals to really respond to my coloring when he commented on a work of his I did
His comments and the reaction I got from others really made me think I could actually make a go at this coloring thing
but it was a good experience and I enjoyed his work elsewhere
Christos Gage: Just heard about the tragic passing of talented artist Ryan Bodenheim at the far too young age of 44
Just heard about the sudden passing of Ryan Bodenheim
44 is still too young and eerily the same age as Mike Wieringo
I worked with Ryan on Fear Itself: Fearsome Four and loved his work
My deepest condolences to his family and friends
I just saw that Ryan Bodenheim has passed away
but he did work at Valiant and was doing stuff at Bad Idea and I loved his line
Robert Venditti: The passing of Ryan Bodenheim is tragic and heartbreaking
His family and loved ones are in my prayers
David Marquez: Just heard that @RyanBodenheim has passed away
I was – an am – a huge fan of his work
Deepest condolences to Ryan's family and friends
Tom Brennan: Ryan Bodenheim made some awesome comics
I came this close to getting him on a project for @HeavyMetalInk I'm sorry we'll never get to talk again
Brandon Montclare: Ryan Bodenheim and I collaborated on
and the @Marvel gig was a big moment in both of our career paths
Still shook by the news of his passing and very sad
Mark Englert: RIP @RyanBodenheim it was an honor to work with you
Nick Pitarra: Sad news about artist Ryan Bodenheim
When I had my 2nd kid (and was freaking out) he called & talked to me for a few hours about being a dad
From when we fessed up to how we had each other saved in our phones…
Valerio Schiti: I just heard about Ryan Bodenheim death
so I'll share what Jonathan Hickman said about him
Jonathan Hickman: I care very much about the creators I work with
the collaborative process is intense and demanding in a way that a lot of people don't understand
but the short version is: I expect a lot of my partners
I feel personally responsible for the success and failure of a book and
their individual success and growth as an artist
The ability to make things — to create — changed my life for the better and so I understand how important it is for the people I work with to feel enabled
I think that's the highest compliment you can pay a creative partner
and over the past decade it was such a joy to watch him also grow as an artist
And now it's just devastating that he's gone
We fought a lot because we both had strong opinions about where a story should go
We laughed a lot because we had the same sense of humor
We were both perfectionist and we constantly screwed ourselves because of it
we were too much alike for it to ever work perfectly
but too much alike not to want to work together
let's appreciate a great comic book artist
an incredible artist whose work I admired but whom I sadly didn't know personally
Josh Crews: Just got home and found out about the tragic passing of @RyanBodenheim
Ryan was immensely talented and incredibly kind
Did this amazing Indiana Jones commission for me a few years back
Warren Simons: @RyanBodenheim was a great talent and an incredibly nice guy as well
We had the opportunity to work with him a lot at @ValiantComics
Marvel Entertainment: We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of artist Ryan Bodenheim
His talent and passion for storytelling through art shined at Marvel and beyond
and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones
Valiant Entertainment: We are saddened by the passing of Ryan Bodenheim
an incredibly talented member of the Valiant family
We will enjoy remembering his work on titles like BLOODSHOT
Ryan will be truly missed and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends
Image Comics: We are heartbroken to learn of Ryan Bodenheim's passing and his friends & family are in our thoughts during this difficult time
Today the comics industry was shaken by the news that comic book artist Ryan “Bode” Bodenheim passed away on December 20
Bodenheim was best known for his frequent collaborations with writer Jonathan Hickman on creator-owned titles at Image Comics
along with his contributions to Valiant Comics titles such as Bloodshot
His Marvel Comics work included contributions to Black Panther
He worked on the upcoming Eternals one-shot Eternals: The Undying #1 with series writer Kieron Gillen
Ryan was born in Oklahoma but grew up and lived in Ohio. Few details surrounding his passing were released in his obituary available online here
Ryan “Bode” Matthew Bodenheim MARCH 9
who worked with Bodenheim on the recent Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers one-shot
paid tribute to Bodenheim with the following Twitter post:
Working with Ryan will always be a highlight of my career. I'm devastated for his friends and family, and – selfishly – I'm so sad I won't get to thank him in person for the incredible work he did on our one shot. https://t.co/39yJUurL8o
— Name cannot be blank (@AlexPaknadel) December 27, 2021
Ryan is survived by his mother, Susan Avery; his son, Jack; his daughter, Lily; his brothers, David and Jonathan and host of other relatives; and family friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date to honor his life, and contributions may be made in Ryan’s honor to www.heroinitiative.org
We here at Comic Watch wish to extend our sympathies to Ryan’s family and friends during this time

With a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, construction work has officially begun on the logistics centre that Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH is developing in Bodenheim
a company specialising in e-commerce and advertising materials logistics as well as dialogue marketing
The new building is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2023
Garbe Industrial Real Estate is investing around €23m in the site
“Today sets the course for the successful implementation of our joint project,” Adrian Zellner
Member of the Executive Board of Garbe Industrial Real Estate
emphasised on the occasion of the ground-breaking ceremony
The Hamburg-based project developer will build a property with a hall area of around 12,100 sq m on the 23,500 sq m site in the “Bürgel” industrial estate
there are 1,325 sq m for offices and social rooms
A further 1,000 sq m of usable space are planned on mezzanine floors
For loading and unloading trucks the facility will be equipped with ten dock levellers and two ground-level sectional doors
Parking spaces for five trucks and 48 cars are provided in the outdoor area
will operate a state-of-the-art e-commerce warehouse from the middle of next year in the new building
“With the commissioning of the logistics centre in Bodenheim
we are expanding our network of locations and will supply our customers’ clients just in time from there in the future,” said Daniel Deckers
explaining the importance the new building will have for the company
It sends several million letters and more than two million parcels per year
The property in Bodenheim is located only a few hundred metres from the B 9 highway
Frankfurt and the other metropolitan areas in the Rhine-Main region via motorways 60
The realisation of the property also focuses on the issue of sustainability
a powerful photovoltaic system is being installed on the roof
The entire building will be equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting
The car parking areas and bicycle shelters will be equipped with e-charging stations
The outdoor area will be extensively landscaped with trees and shrubs and should offer opportunities for a quality retreat
Garbe Industrial Real Estate is aiming for certification in accordance with the Gold Standard of the German Sustainable Building Council for the new building
“The employees who will work in the logistics centre in the future and the surrounding area will benefit equally from the sustainable development of the property,” says local mayor Thomas Becker-Theilig with conviction

From Eternals writer Kieron Gillen and artists Edgar Salazar and the late-great Ryan Bodenheim comes a fascinating trek through cosmic family history in Eternals: The Heretic #1
Featuring colors by Chris O’Halloran and letters from Clayton Cowles
this one-shot sees grand philosophizing and flashback storytelling between the new Prime Eternal
With a fascinating script and great visuals
this is a one-shot absolutely worth picking up for cosmic-Marvel fans
“Thanos is now ruler of the Eternals
But believe it or not…he’s actually not the worst leader that the Eternals’ society has ever seen
that honor belongs to someone even more horrific
but who was the original evil from whom all Eternal evils descend
And may the Celestials have mercy on your souls.”
What works so well about Kieron Gillen’s script for Eternals: The Heretic is how grandiose he makes this relatively simple premise feel. Thanos seeks a conversation and possibly some wisdom from the original Eternal gone bad
The ancient Titan then regales Thanos (and us readers) with the story of how he split off with the other original Eternals – as well as his philosophy regarding obeying the Celestials
I can’t get into specifics without dipping into spoilers
but trust me when I say that it’s genuinely fascinating and entertaining
Gillen’s dialogue approach for these characters takes Kirby’s “cosmic Shakespeare” style and modernizes it
Every line carries immense weight thanks to how Gillen writes their conversation
We are watching gods philosophize and debate and it’s so damn entertaining
but it’s well-paced and interesting enough that I doubt it will come up often
The flashbacks to Uranos’ time as an Eternal and his discussion of how he came to his rather…dark conclusions about life are almost as compelling as the conversation with his young relative
There are also some Hickman-esque text-only pages that inform us about Celestial and Eternal life structure and philosophy
This is an era of Marvel’s cosmic history we don’t get to see in modern comics too often
and it’s a compelling treat in this book
Our journey into the cosmic storytelling withinin Eternals: The Heretic #1 is visually put together by the late Ryan Bodenheim and Edgar Salazar
Their thin lines and deliberate direction create the thoughtful
conversational yet epic tone of this comic
cosmically powerful beings in the Marvel universe
illustrating the faint smirks and frowns we do get from Thanos and Uranos is a hugely important task to get us into their headspace
Bodenheim and Salazar accomplish just that
with effective subtleties drawn into every close-up panel
and is equally difficult to capture since these two characters mainly focus on being imposing
So much of what makes this comic’s fascinating back-and-forth work is watching them communicate
This is thanks to how Bodenheim and Salazar carefully handle this task
The moments we get massive displays of power are handled with intensity
with an obviously Kirby-inspired method of drawing this specific brand of cosmic power
Chris O’Halloran provides the colors for Bodenheim and Salazar’s art
and here he does a solid job of bringing that art to life
For much of the book we’re in the crystalline cavern prison where Uranos is being kept
most of the coloring shows up in soft violets and blues that bleed together in a pretty and atmospheric manner
The flashback sequences end up being a suitably jarring change
but O’Halloran crafts these scenes with a tonal consistency
but they still look like a proper part of the story
Clayton Cowles had his work cut out for him with the lettering
Every page is littered with narration boxes and speech bubbles full of conversational dialogue
modern font that is easy to read and does its job well
carrying the reading experience forward in a clean manner
and an outstanding endnote for the phenomenal talent that was Ryan Bodenheim
Eternals: The Heretic #1 is a fascinating and immensely compelling one-shot of cosmic Marvel storytelling
Kieron Gillen’s script is loaded with eloquent
grandiose dialogue that carries the weight of the two powerhouse main characters brilliantly well
The visuals from the late great Ryan Bodenheim
and Chris O’Halloran are well-detailed and fantastically directed
crafting a nuanced reading experience that is perfect for the sort of comic we get here
Please be sure to grab this book when it hits shelves on March 16th
A Scottish rabbi and his family were recently assaulted in central Edinburgh
During a meeting with members of the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, Rabbi Yossi Bodenheim — the Jewish chaplain for Scottish universities — recounted the incident that took place in early November
“My wife and I took our four young children for a walk in this beautiful city,” he was quoted as saying
That took place less than a mile from here
You can imagine how distressed they were.”
That hatred is the very opposite of chessed…As Scotland’s Jewish student chaplain
my role is to bring chessed to Jewish students and to make sure that they are comfortable on campus
I also have to help them cope with antisemitism
because unfortunately it is an issue on campus as well.”
Nicola Livingston — the head of the Jewish Student Chaplaincy Scotland — was quoted as saying that the incident was an indicator of growing antisemitism in Scotland
it’s quite a difficult thing to speak about publicly
you don’t want to be seen as too vulnerable,” she stated
“The Scottish government needs to condemn such incidents when they happen.”
As reported by The Algemeiner in August
a new study found that Scottish Jews were increasingly keeping their identity a secret for fear of being the target of antisemitism

When the Empire was first introduced in Black Panther, it seemed very much like it was a vision of Wakanda’s future—a sprawling of collection of colonized planets all defined by the nation’s iconic vibranium-powered tech
a seemingly amnesiac T’Challa came to realize that the Empire was not from the future proper
as it was founded by a group of present-day Wakandans who were flung back through time while searching through space for the origin of Earth’s deposit of vibranium
After becoming stranded 2,000 years in the past on a distant planet
the lost Wakandans did what Wakandans have always done: They survived
and in time began to build new lives for themselves
But unlike the Wakandans of Earth who made a point of isolating themselves from outsiders
the Wakandan Empire became a superpower specifically because of its willingness to subjugate any and every sentient race it came across through force and by robbing them of their memories
https://gizmodo.com/the-intergalactic-future-of-black-panthers-wakanda-is-a-1826323558
Though the Empire’s power came from its ability to make people forget who they are
what’s become clear over the course of Black Panther’s recent arcs is how forgetting their roots on Earth led to the Wakandans becoming the kind of warmongering people their ancestors hoped to never become again after the original Wakanda was first unified
As T’Challa’s memories have come back to him
he’s gained an even deeper appreciation for the power that being able to recall one’s past has
regardless of whether you’re a king or a soldier whose life those in positions of power see as expendable
Being able to remember his life gave T’Challa that much more resolve to take the Empire down and return to his loved ones on Earth
but at the same time it forced him to confront the reality that this entire experience has changed him and reaffirmed something powerful and difficult about himself that he’s always had difficulty accepting
but unlike the Black Panthers who came before him
his life’s been shaped by an unshakable wanderlust and a draw to superheroism out and about in the larger world
And his undying love for Ororo Munroe actually plays a significant role in how he begins to recall his past life—in a way
it also reflects the love he has for the Earth itself
he can’t deny that he immediately felt compelled to join the anti-Empire rebels and fight in their war without question
suggesting that his compulsion to play hero out in space was just as strong as his love for Earth’s Wakanda
was that when T’Challa finally managed to re-establish communication between his fellow freedom fighters and Earth’s Wakanda
he learned his home country was able to prosper in his absence even though he was taught to believe that Wakanda would always need its Black Panther
While running off the play superhero with the Avengers and the members of the Illuminati has been one of T’Challa’s favorite pasttimes
he’s always returned to Wakanda and tried to be the kind of ruler who would make his family proud
But seeing the country continuing to thrive in his absence makes it that much more difficult for him to believe he has to sit on the throne
especially with the whole of the Empire posing a legitimate threat to the entire galaxy
https://gizmodo.com/this-delightful-avengers-infinity-war-clip-shows-shuri-1825359674
Interestingly, at the same time that T’Challa’s been struggling to find his place in the world, both his stepmother and sister firmly believe that Wakanda does need its king in these trying times
Since he’s been able to make it back to Earth ahead of confronting the Empire’s forces
they’ve pushed him to take stock of his life and reflect on the legacies of other Black Panthers
Shuri loves T’Challa and everything he stands for
but she knows just as well as he does how powerful his drive to run off is—something that’s only become stronger now that he’s lived an entirely new life and forged new bonds with his fellow warriors—and it devastates him to be pointedly told as much
It’s only after T’Challa travels to the spiritual plane to confer with his ancestors and be presented with the memories of his past failures that he finally comes to accept that regardless of his personal desires
he is still Wakanda’s king with a responsibility to protect his people
In earning the trust and allegiance of the other Black Panthers
he managed to do something that the panther goddess Bast could not: tap into the vast energies of the spiritual plane to restore the memories of every single slave living under the Empire’s control
For all of Wakanda’s technological might and vibranium
the nation’s collective memory has always been its most valuable resource—because understanding the past was key to navigating through the present and into the future
With just a handful of issues in this run left
it’s still unclear just how T’Challa and his newly restored allies across the galaxy will be able to strike the Empire down
but now that he’s resolved to step up to the plate and do what kings do
the Empire’s going to have one hell of a fight on its hands

Black Panther #19 is in stores from Marvel Comics next week
kicking off the final arc of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda story
Will it also be the final arc before a #1 issue relaunch
which is a lot for a modern Marvel comic without a relaunch
The story begins with the Black Panther planning another excursion into space
hoping to take down the Empire once and for all
all of T'Challa's adventures have been keeping him away from his actual duties
and she doesn't feel like covering for him anymore
But it would probably be a pretty boring story arc if T'Challa decided to just stay home
Black Panther #19 hits stores on Wednesday.

There’s something wrong with this world all right, but I can’t put my finger on it…Something must be wrong when a fellow can’t get a decent wage, can’t tell when he’s going to be fired, can’t look forward to any promise of happiness. Something is rotten somewhere.
Boog took refuge in this "literature of failure," as, presumably, many did when the work was first published. So why did it drop off the map? Boog guesses that
Americans don’t like to dwell on failure. As soon as the economic crisis passed, literary scholars abandoned these novels from the 1930s. Bodenheim spent the rest of his life in and out of flophouses, and never wrote another novel. Both Dahlberg and Newhouse went on to have careers as writers, but their 1930s work hasn’t been reprinted.

Thanos's grand-uncle's advice is kind of Yoda-ish in a twisted
One could almost argue that Thanos is the main character of Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic's recent Eternals saga.
Since their story started in the Eternals series and related specials in 2021
readers have learned about Thanos' heritage as an Eternal
seen how his father split from the Eternals on Earth
and watched as Thanos has cut a bloody path back to Earth to reunite with them
Thanos will take on a new role entirely in his relationship with the Eternals
Eternals: The Heretic is written by Gillen and features art by Ryan Bodenheim and Edgar Salazar
It finds Thanos in the position of Prime Eternal
Thanos is trying to decide what to do with this power
a kind of proto-Thanos who some may argue is even more dangerous
Uranos has been imprisoned for 600,000 years
and when Thanos dares to visit and speak with him (Hannibal-Lecter-style)
It's difficult to create a Marvel villain that might actually be worse than the Mad Titan
we know that the brother of Thanos's grandfather Kronos is slightly worse than his grand-nephew.
Do something or don't." From then on we learn what Uranos did to get him locked away by the Eternals
which has been hinted at but not explained throughout Gillen/Ribic's run
We're not going to spoil what that was or how Thanos takes in the information
but we will say that it makes for a challenge
and forges a relationship that Thanos has never experienced before
there's going to be some emphasis on a new and terrible doom that's headed for the Marvel Universe.
and that becomes clear to the reader through the work that colorist Chris O'Halloran has done for the comic book
There's a palpable sense of dread that courses through this book
Uranos's history is told in bleak grays and desert tans
like the color of a post-nuclear war sky.
is constantly surrounded by deepening blues
like the last bits of twilight before full dark
Assigning these colors to the two different big bads of this story not only increases its apocalyptic tension but also tells the reader something important
just because Thanos and Uranos both have plans for destruction does not mean they're on the same side
And we can tell that because of the design from artists Ryan Bodenheim and Edgar Salazar
Just like Gillen's dialogue tells us who the character of Uranos is from the moment we meet him
Uranos sports an alien scar on the right side of his face
He wears a minimalized version of Jack Kirby's famous Eternals armor
walking a satisfying line between medieval warlord and alien entity.
Other character designs stick pretty close to what Esad Ribic has done with the Eternals cast
It might not satisfy fans looking for something new
but it fits perfectly with the rest of the series
it is veteran letterer Clayton Cowles who keeps the story of Eternals: The Heretic together
Cowles creates the dialogue of the "Machine," the AI within Earth's structure that the Eternals must protect and that narrates our story
The Machine also provides several pages of purely textual explainers
giving us important backstory and family info
There's a lot of lore that The Heretic is working with
It's easy to believe that a character as popular as Thanos has already been fully explored
especially if you know him from his era-defining role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Eternals: The Heretic proves that there is plenty more exploring to be done with the character and that the evil within him truly knows no bounds
Uranos's comment about "doing something" or not might be more than just his way of belittling Thanos; it might be a prediction of what he does next
Eternals: The Heretic #1 is on sale on comic shop shelves and digitally March 16th

So my local comics store didn’t get their Diamond shipment this week (they probably have it by now
so this week’s stack was exclusively from The Big Two
Robin #9 – I’m really enjoying Joshua Williamson’s run with Damian. In this issue
Damian leads the fighters on Lazarus Island in the fight to stop the demon that his grandmother has unleashed. We get some cool insight into both Damian and his father with this one
and some nice and dynamic art by Roger Cruz. The ending surprised me
as I was expecting that we’d get closer to solving some of the mysteries of this series so far
but I’m down to see where Williamson takes Damian next
Action Comics #1038 – I’m really enjoying this series now. Superman’s been defeated by Mongul
and his crew (those that are still alive) are all captured
except for Midnighter. I like the way writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson is not letting Superman break
despite these difficult circumstances. In addition to this being an exciting story
it’s also a great character study. I’m not usually a Superman fan
but I really like how this is going. I’m less impressed with the Martian Manhunter backup story
which is pretty pedestrian and doesn’t add anything to the character
Aquaman: The Becoming #4 – It’s time to learn the secrets of Jackson’s mother’s actions in Xebel when she was younger
and why her daughter is so angry and resentful. There’s a lot of family drama in this issue
and it works pretty well. I picked this title up because I don’t know much about Jackson and was curious to learn more about him. I’m glad I did
and I think this has me on board for the upcoming Aquamen series. I’m realizing that I should also be reading the current Black Manta miniseries
Aquaman/Green Arrow: Deep Target #3 – It’s common knowledge that I don’t understand a lot about DC continuity these days
but I thought Aquaman wasn’t king of Atlantis anymore
which leaves me wondering why he’s the king in this book. Is this part of the regular continuity? Why is this all so confusing. I am enjoying this as a stand-alone title
though. Arthur and Oliver confront the dinosaur-man who has made their lives so confusing
without ever being impressive. I’d rather be reading new issues of Brandon Thomas’s Excellence
#4 – I’m a little surprised at how quickly this series is moving
with Slade and Dinah revealing that they know that TRUST cannot be TRUSTed
has allied herself with. This issue works more on the dynamic between Slade and Dinah
and I like that. I’m also surprised to see a Grant Morrison-era villain who I’ve always kind of hated
but who can be trusted to deliver exciting stories. I’m still not a huge fan of Howard Porter’s new style
but there are some pages that look amazing here
Devil’s Reign #2 – While I can’t escape the parallels between this series and Civil War
I do like the way Chip Zdarsky is approaching this story. The Kingpin has declared all superhumans in New York illegal
unless they work for his new Thunderbolts initiative
which has so far attracted mostly criminals and supervillains. Spider-Man (Ben Reilly) gets into a fight while Luke Cage suggests that he run against Fisk in the coming election
which is what Tony Stark wanted to do. It’s interesting that Zdarsky is also continuing some of the storylines he started in his recently-finished Daredevil run
as Elektra worries about her own plans. I’m liking this event so far
The Human Target #3 – I really didn’t expect that this series would mostly exist as an excuse to revisit the days of the Justice League International
but I’m here for it. Chance and Ice continue to investigate who has murdered him (he has a little over a week to live after being poisoned). Guy Gardner does not like that Chance is spending so much time with Ice
and Tom King decides to show Guy as the difficult person he’d be in life
instead of taking a comedic approach to him. That is saved for Booster Gold
who also makes an appearance in this issue. This series is fun
and has wonderful Greg Smallwood art. It’s pretty different from the other books King has done recently
Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #19 – This issue was released out of sequence – it should have come before the most recent issue of Darth Vader
as it shows Valance’s first mission for Vader. It’s a decent issue
but I feel like the split between Valance’s part of the issue and the part that is devoted to the other bounty hunters is too harsh now
as Valance isn’t really even a bounty hunter anymore. This title is always struggling to find itself
Teen Titans Academy #9 – I had to hunt this one down at another comics store
as it seems that DC distribution is still a little wonky. I enjoyed seeing everyone react to Roy Harper’s still being alive
although I would have thought that the revelation of his living might have been a little more consequential. I also like the storyline that has Psimon trying to recruit some of the kids
including Red X. This book continues to impress me
and I’m pretty happy with Mike Norton drawing it lately
Teen Titans Academy #10 – Tim Sheridan is really leaning into the Dane/Nevermore storyline with this issue
which reminds me a lot of Raven’s earliest story arc
although no one else seems to remember that. I do like the way Stitch stands up to the adult Titans about how to deal with Dane
but this issue left me a little cold. I like it better when it’s more focused on the students than the teachers.
Comics I Would Have Bought if Comics Weren’t So Expensive:
Action Comics #1030-1035 – I’m really enjoying Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s Action Comics. I’m caught up after reading these
and now I have the full story of what motivated Superman to try to liberate Warworld in the first place. Johnson has a really good handle on the character
and I like how his ideals have now placed him at odds with the Justice League. I do have some odd timing issues with this and how it fits with the Superman and the Authority series that Grant Morrison wrote
but whatever. This is a new take on a character I rarely find interesting
Batman/Superman: Authority Special #1 – It’s been a long time since I’ve seen any Ben Templesmith art
so this was kind of special. I like the way Phillip Kennedy Johnson works to establish the new Authority as a team
and I enjoyed Batman’s reaction to them. This was a good comic
Reckless – Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips remain one of the greatest collaborative duos working in comics today. They’ve had so many hits
exploring a number of genres. Now they’ve turned to hardcover OGNs in the pulp tradition with Reckless. Ethan Reckless is a damaged person – after being caught in an explosion as a young man
he doesn’t feel emotion the way most people do
helping people for cash. He is surprised when a person from his previous life – a former lover from when he was an FBI agent infiltrating a radical leftist group – tracks him down and gets him involved in her drama all over again. Brubaker works a few surprising twists into this story that make it hard to talk about in detail here
and Phillips does a terrific job (as always) of giving this book a real 80s adventure movie feel. He’s aided by Jacob Phillips on colours
who really captures that California vibe. I am glad to see that two more volumes of this book have been published (I guess I was sleeping)
and I’m looking forward to reading them. This was exactly what I was looking for this week
Teen Titans Earth One Vol.1 – I only picked this up to round out a 3 for $10 deal
but I did end up enjoying it. Jeff Lemire does not do his best work with someone else’s characters
but since this is a total reimagining of the Titans for the Earth One series
I feel like it was more up his alley. Basically
with creating new versions of the non-sidekick classic Teen Titans. A group of teens who mostly don’t know each other
start to develop their abilities (or in Vic’s case
grow metal skin) around the same time that they start experiencing visions of an alien girl. Like I said
but it’s not a very memorable book. What even is the Earth One series? Other than Morrison’s terrible Wonder Woman book
and am not sure I understand the concept. Is it DC’s attempt to very slowly do Ultimate DC? Is there a market for that
Ryan Bodenheim – I was sad to hear of the passing of Ryan Bodenheim
an artist whose work I’d really enjoyed. He drew some of Jonathan Hickman’s earlier series
and the never-finished The Dead & The Dying
as well as doing some work at Marvel (Black Panther)
and Image (Halcyon). He had an interesting approach to his art
using lots of details and a slightly European aesthetic. I’d noticed that he was working on an Eternals one-off with Kieron Gillan that I hope gets published still. I’m not sure of the circumstances around Bodenheim’s passing
but at 44 he was way too young. My condolences to his family
