Kevin and Christine Bomlitz know firsthand that U.S
horses are loved around the world and the United States loves the world’s horses
The Johnstown couple owns and operates Blue Diamond Stables
a USDA approved Import and Export quarantine facility for horses entering or leaving the country
They have been importing and exporting horses exclusively since 2002
“We work with mares and stallions of all breeds and disciplines as well as with all national and international shipping agencies,” Christine said
“We quarantine horses purchased for showing
We offer 12-by-12 rubber matted stalls with large windows
and lunging to help keep horses fit during their stay while abiding by all USDA regulations and biosecurity guidelines.”
The procedures are different based on a number of different factors
they must be quarantined for 15 to 35 days at a USDA approved quarantine facility
horses go to federal import facilities in their country for blood tests and inspection to make sure they can travel
They can enter the United States at one of four facilities in New York
The horses stay there three days for testing
then we send a shipper up and we test mares or stallions of breeding age for Contagious Equine Metritis,” Christine said
“The horses ship to our farm from Chicago or New York in sealed trailers
The USDA meets the truck at our farm to unseal the trailer
inspect the horses and check the paperwork
Then they put a quarantine on that horse located in a certain stall number
We strip the trailer — clean it out and the USDA completely disinfects it
USDA monitors the process until the horse is in the stall on the farm
Then the horse remains there until negative tests come back
That is around 15 days for a mare and 30 days for a stallion
The lab can only test on Monday through Friday so the horses may stay a little longer depending on when they arrive
Then the USDA comes back and releases them for shipping in the United States.”
every country has a different protocol for animals to enter
“We are governed by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) as well as accredited veterinarians in order to meet all export requirements,” she said
• An approximately 30-day quarantine as per country requirements
• Regular updates and communication with owners
New York-JFK or Rickenbacker International Airport
USDA and Ohio Department of Agriculture fees
lab tests and vaccinations that follow each individual country’s requirements
The Columbus airport’s new ability to fly livestock internationally is a huge boon for Blue Diamond Stables
Going on a long road trip from the stables to an airport added an additional logistical layer
“When we would go to Chicago or New York they would have to stop and stay for five hours at an approved farm within an hour of the airport and inspected there before finally going to the airport,” Christine said
“The facility at Rickenbacker solves that part now
We are now able to do the five-hour USDA export isolation at our facility and ship directly to Rickenbacker only 35 miles away
Then we are the grooms on the trip as well
The stress on the horses and the ease is going to be a monumental improvement flying out of Rickenbacker.”
“I really like going to places like Amsterdam and Dubai,” Kevin said
“And I like seeing all of the different horses
Where can you sit in one barn and see an Olympian and see all these breeds of horses you’ve never seen before
You get to see every breed of horse from everywhere around the world — the best of every breed.”
but running the stable is also a lifestyle that may not suit everyone
“We have to be very flexible to accommodate last minute changes
You can’t plan anything with this kind of life
We get seven days notice of what is coming in
in February all of the airports were snowed in and that really changed all of our plans with arrivals and departures
When Iceland had a volcano explode it shut down shipping to New York from Europe
The weirdest things can happen that affect our business.”
global events can have an impact at Blue Diamond Stables as well
“The price of the Euro affects us a lot because Europe is our biggest exporter,” she said
There are probably 15 other quarantines like us around the country and I believe we are the only one in Ohio
We are the only one in the country that specializes in this
We just specialize in imports and exports.”
