The Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms provided a classic setting for an annual event that has become a cherished tradition of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine
Members of the DVM Class of 2026 gathered with family
friends and faculty and staff on the evening of April 12 for the annual White Coat Ceremony that signals the transition of the third year veterinary students from the classroom to the clinics
Purdue University scientists led by co-principal investigators in the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine have identified the Supinoxin small-molecule drug as a possible new therapy for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC)
evidence came pouring in that Boilermakers everywhere – whether alumni
friends and/or fans – were answering the call to make the 2025 Purdue Day of Giving our loudest and proudest “All hail!” yet
And Purdue Veterinary Medicine played a part in the success
It is no surprise that the members of Purdue’s Werling Comparative Oncology Research Center (WCORC) in the College of Veterinary Medicine would not back down from a challenge
especially when it comes to supporting innovative cancer research
about two-dozen representatives of the center could be found out on the course Saturday
participating in the 17th annual 5K Challenge fundraising run to support the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research
This week we extend our appreciation to Lisa Hepworth
who is a senior lecturer and instructor of record for small animal junior surgery

Managing director of Peter Dohle Schiffahrts and president of the German Shipowners’ Association tells us what she would do if named CEO of global shipping
The shipping industry is grappling with its most pressing challenge: achieving climate neutrality. Addressing this critical issue requires the implementation of universally aligned regulations that apply to all vessels across the globe.
To navigate this transformation, the focus must be on investing in alternative fuels, upgrading fleets with environmentally friendly technologies and instituting a comprehensive global emissions framework instead of a plethora of regional regulations.

announces ban after reports women were harassed by men from asylum shelters
A western German town has barred adult male asylum seekers from its public indoor swimming pool after receiving complaints that some women were sexually harassed
The measures in Bornheim, a town of 48,000 some 18 miles (30km) south of Cologne, are the latest sign of social tensions related to the arrival last year of 1.1 million migrants in Germany, followed by sexual assaults on women by young male migrants and asylum seekers during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne.
Read moreBornheim’s deputy mayor said on Friday that a difficult decision was taken to send a clear message that breaching German cultural norms was a red line.
“There have been complaints of sexual harassment and chatting-up going on in this swimming pool … by groups of young men, and this has prompted some women to leave [the premises],” Markus Schnapka said.
“This led to my decision that adult males from our asylum shelters may not enter the swimming pool until further notice.”
He did not say how the ban would be enforced. German media say asylum seekers, who get no funds from the state, must present an identification document to be admitted to pools at a discounted rate.
Schnapka said his town had begun a campaign in local asylum seekers’ shelters to teach the occupants about gender equality and respect for women.
The gang attacks on women outside Cologne’s historic cathedral on the river Rhine deepened public doubts about Angela Merkel’s open-door policy towards refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and about Germany’s ability to integrate the mainly Muslim and Arab newcomers.

Tennyson Varney’s return to Hamilton Township last fall went about as well as he could have hoped considering the circumstances.
After serving as an assistant with the Rangers from 2008-13
including the last four seasons as offensive coordinator
Varney coached Franklin Heights from 2014-16 and Grove City from 2017-19.
When the Hamilton Township job came open after the 2019 season
he was excited about the opportunity to return to a place that he knew so well
During a season shaped by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic
the Rangers improved from 5-5 in 2019 to finish 6-2.

Hamilton Township also competed in the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and won the fourth postseason game in program history
beating 22nd-seeded Beechcroft 50-19 in the first round as the No
Region 11 before falling 39-21 to sixth-seeded Watterson.
“Last year was my first year (as head coach)
“It’s a place that obviously I know very well from being here before
It’s a district that cares about athletics
and will be up for the first game.”
The Rangers closed last season two weeks after its playoff loss
beating Amanda-Clearcreek 14-0 to finish 4-1 in the MSL-Buckeye Division behind Division IV state semifinalist Bloom-Carroll.
No other teams from the MSL-Buckeye except for the Bulldogs and Rangers posted overall winning records
which backs up the parity that Varney believes should rule the league again this fall.
Hamilton Township is hoping the success experienced during Varney’s first year will carry over despite entering the season with a more inexperienced squad than a year ago.
Complicating matters in the preseason was an injury during the first scrimmage that likely ended the season for sophomore Josh Woods
who was projected to be the starting quarterback
will be “sophomore heavy” this fall – which he hopes bodes well for the future.
“We just want to continue to build off of last year,” said senior Riley Gibbs
“Coach Varney has been doing really well for our program and I can only see it going up.”
Black is set to take over at quarterback for 2021 graduate Brock McGuire
Sophomore Jordan Bowen will serve as the backup
1 running back after rushing for 405 yards and three touchdowns a year ago
Graduate Stephen Mikell ran for a team-high 677 yards with six touchdowns.
athletic kid who runs downhill,” Varney said
“He’s one of the better football players we have.”
Senior Aaman Whitson and junior Zach Dawson also figure to play a key role at running back along with Gibbs
whose main focus will be on defense.
Senior Owen Spencer is a first-year competitor who showed his athletic ability in track last season
Juniors Trenton Renz and Kaden Kiser are expected to split time at tight end.
Jayce Peters and Alton Taylor are projected to be starters on the offensive line
with freshman Anthony Brobst also expected to play a key role
is a 2021 graduate who started on the line and is playing for Mount Union.
Varney expects the defense to be led by Gibbs at linebacker and Bornheim up front
four sacks and five tackles for loss last season
three sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Joining Bornheim on the line should be Hunter at tackle
Peters and Renz seeing action as well.
Gibbs will be joined by senior Seth Conrad.
Senior Felix Prewitt is a returning starter at cornerback and will be joined at that position by Spencer
with sophomore Nadir Langston and freshman Taliq Black among those competing at safety.
“We’ve got a little bit of talent in our sophomore and freshman classes,” Varney said.
Junior Dakota Meyer is expected to be the kicker and also will punt
replacing 2021 graduate Malcolm Denny at punter.
Gibbs and Kiser both have done long snapping
and Whitson and Langston are likely to return kickoffs and punts.
Trenton Renz (TE/DL) and Owen Spencer (WR/DB)
Schnapka announced the decision in person at a local refugee center; Bornheim also plans to hold meetings to discuss things like sexual-assault prevention and respect for women
“I know that I do an injustice to most people
but I do not see an alternative way to send this clear message,” Schnapka said
The city’s announcement comes as the German city of Cologne is still reeling from more than 100 reports of sexual assault on New Year’s Eve. As of last week, 31 people were under investigation in those attacks
Police reports from the chaotic scene indicate one man claimed to be Syrian
but the group of men called in for questioning also includes Algerians
Reactions to the New Year’s Eve assaults have been largely mixed
but many blame Chancellor Angela Merkel’s pro-refugee policy for the uptick in sexual assaults
“I am embarrassed for my fellow believers,” an unnamed refugee reportedly told a local TV station in Bornheim

Delegates at TradeWinds event debate the feasibility of hitting net zero
Shipping has to strive to meet a proposed zero-carbon target by 2050, even if ultimately those goals are highly ambitious.
That was the conclusion of panellists at the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum Germany 2022, which was hosted alongside the SMM trade fair in Hamburg on Tuesday.
“There is no other escape,” said Gaby Bornheim, president of the German Shipowners Association (VDR).
Coffee from an expert: Carlo Graf Bülow serves cappuccino
Some people can't get going in the morning without it
it is a means of survival in everyday life
while still others consider it indispensable for social and private occasions
He is one of the best baristas in the world - officially
the world championship in the preparation of coffee using a so-called Aeropress
was held in the Australian city of Melbourne
the coffee powder is mixed with the brewing water in the brewing cylinder
The liquid is pressed through a filter into a cup or pot using the plunger
The participants from 54 countries were each given 250 grams of coffee to develop a recipe from
The national champions competed against each other in four rounds
with a jury tasting the respective drinks blind
you had five minutes to brew the most delicious cup," says Graf Bülow
behind the winner from Thailand and ahead of the third-placed team from China
who comes from Bonn and lives in the foothills of the Rhineland - after the German Aeropress Championship in 2021 and 2023
third place in the Cup Tasters last year - which involves recognising coffee by smell and taste - victory in the German Latte Art Championship in 2018 and first place in the Espresso Italiano discipline in 2017
to an inconspicuous warehouse and production hall in the north of Cologne
more than 16,000 kilometres from Melbourne as the crow flies
This is where the Cologne-based roasting company Schamong produces its coffee
Carlo Graf Bülow is the main person responsible for production
from the delivery of the beans from countries including Brazil
Ethiopia and Costa Rica to roasting and grinding
Count Bülow has been working at Schamong for more than seven years
he worked at the bar of the Bonn branch of the Vapiano restaurant chain
A friend introduced him to a barista and the world of "latte art"
"We wanted to be able to do that too," says Graf Bülow
The consistency of the milk foam and the pouring technique are important
but today experts conjure up the most complex animal motifs
Graf Bülow dropped out of university and trained as a system caterer
His career path took him from Vapiano to a teahouse in Bonn city centre
then to a restaurant in Troisdorf and finally to Schamong
"I had my job interview on a Wednesday and started on a Saturday," he says and smiles
But what makes a good coffee in his opinion
"You don't need much to make a good coffee," says Graf Bülow
perhaps a touch too hard for filter coffee," he says
he uses a table filter machine for the water
the flavour is also influenced by the way the coffee is roasted
most coffee drinkers won't be able or want to do this themselves
a good coffee grinder can cost as much as 200 euros
So powder after all - then buy in smaller quantities and shop more often
"Coffee gets old quickly," says Graf Bülow
The 37-year-old is by no means a coffee dogmatist
which quickly becomes clear when talking to him
"Whatever tastes good is allowed," he says
So does that include preparations using pods and capsules
There is actually too little powder in capsules and pods
both are justified and the technology of the machines is good
And coffee cultivation consumes a lot of resources
coffee is a big business from which large companies generally earn a lot and small farmers less
they try to establish direct trade relationships and influence coffee cultivation
says Count Bülow - although this is not always easy
he visited a farm in Brazil to find out about cultivation there
He still has a visit to Kenya on his agenda - and probably a trip or two to a coffee competition
He has already proven several times that he can do it
479,700 tonnes of roasted coffee were sold in Germany
According to the German Coffee Association
per capita consumption in relation to the population was 167 litres
the "whole bean" segment saw the biggest growth in coffee preparation at home
this means that the "ground roasted coffee" and "whole bean" segments would have converged for the first time in 2022
each with a market share of around 44 per cent
Pads would have had a market share of six per cent in 2022
The German Coffee Association sees a trend towards fully automatic machines

Franz Wirtz GmbH in Bornheim has slowly but surely been developing into a modern transport service provider
the forwarding company offers tailor-made solutions for Europe-wide transport logistics: from sensitive foods to high-quality electronics and consumer goods to pharmaceutical products
50 percent of its revenues are still from fresh food logistics
which is why the GmbH is one of the leading suppliers in this area
Despite the many challenges in today's transport sector
Mr Wirtz certainly sees a place in the market for his company
the company was transformed into a modern service provider
Quality standards and flexibilityThe company currently has over 100 employees
a high-tech transfer warehouse with a surface area of 1,000 m2 and integrated cold stores
the traditional GmbH serves a mixed clientele of (producer) cooperatives
regionally and internationally."In addition to the just-in-time procurement of goods
we also deal with the disposition and labeling of fresh products as needed
everything happens at the same location in Bornheim," said Wirtz
There is usually a peak between April and the end of October
when local fresh specialties like soft fruit are arriving on the market in large quantities
the company is struggling with a significant shortage of skilled personnel
"We need employees who understand the business
quality standards and know what it is to be flexible
we have started employing workers from all over Europe."
Difficult infrastructureIn addition to the constant shortage of skilled workers
there are also more and more challenges in terms of infrastructure
because outside of the Cologne area -whether in other urban areas of Germany or at the major transport hubs in neighboring countries such as the Netherlands- these obstacles have to be taken into account nowadays
so that we have passed through Cologne before 7.00 clock
there is no real solution to these problems; it never gets any easier."
Promising futureCompared to these difficulties
thanks to the high-tech cooling technology

A suburb of the German city of Bonn banned male refugees over 18 from using the municipal swimming pool after complaints of sexual harassment, the latest in a wave of incidents creating a public backlash against Angela Merkel’s open-doors policy
Social workers in Bornheim, which is about 30 kilometers south of Cologne where hundreds of women were sexually molested on New Year’s Eve by gangs of men including asylum-seekers
took action after women complained about men from a refugee shelter
“There have been complaints of sexual harassment and chatting-up going on in this swimming pool and this has prompted some women to leave [the premises],” said Markus Schnapka
head of Bornheim’s social welfare office
The aim is to send a message to the refugees that German cultural norms

adding: “Once our social workers tell us that they have got the message

Innovation and Digitization at Ministry of ICT,…
The Kenyan Government is set to move away from the large scale acquisition of equipment to the implementation of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme
This announcement was made by Nyimbi Odero
Innovation and Digitization at Ministry of ICT
who was Speaking at The Year Ahead conference organised by CIO East Africa
where he made it clear that the Kenyan Government will be moving to a Bring Your Own Device scheme for its civil servants
“So what we can do is subsidize the procurement of things like laptops
because as a civil servant there is no way you are going to use the device only for work
and when you take it home your family is going to use it
and if it belongs to government it’s generally bad news
legitimately let your family use it and also do government work
Than for us to go ahead and buy new laptops,” said Odero
out of peoples’ payroll and a bit of subsidies there is actually sufficient funds to go out and buy laptops that people need
But we don’t want to go out and announce that we are going to charge every civil servant a thousand (Ksh) every month for a laptop he/she might claim they don’t need
But certainly this is the way it is going to happen
because nobody is going to go and buy a laptop or desktop anymore,” he continued
Odero further added that this will intern provides an opportunity for; business sector
financiers and device manufacturers to work with the civil servants in order to help them to acquire devices
Footprint Africa Business Solutions (FABS)
who was presenting about enterprise mobility at the same event
a good BYOD policy must protect privacy concerns for both employee and employer
She added that some of the considerations of such a policy would include:
whether the device is locked or the data is deleted
clear separation between personal and business data and regular monitoring

We can only get through this crisis together
restaurateurs and solo self-employed people around the Berger have also realised this
Joint initiatives are to be used to try to get through this difficult time of the pandemic
for which Head of Economic Affairs Markus Frank has many words of praise: "Together with the Bornheim-Mitte trade association
we have already launched some very successful initiatives to give traders a helping hand
the current aim in these difficult times is above all to strengthen the identification of customers with the local shops
in order to create an appetite for contactless shopping in the district."
One of the projects is video portraits of shops with a digital Bembellauf to show the diversity and creativity around the Berger
a poster has been created that hangs in many shop windows
It urges us all to "Support your local heros"
support local retailers and restaurateurs in these tough times
who is the contact person for the Bornheim-Mitte trade association
but many offer online shops or contactless pick-up stations
Have you ever gotten buying advice for pans in the shop around the corner via Facetime?" It's really worth taking a closer look here
as many retailers and restaurateurs have developed creative and passionate ways to be there for their customers and guests even in lockdown
In the virtual world, Kümmerin Martin-Marx gets support from Pascal Adams. He helps the traders to improve their internet presence and takes care of presenting the offers of the shops online in an attractive way. On its website at http://frankfurt-berger-strasse.de/
the Bornheim-Mitte trade association bundles the tradespeople's offerings and shows how resolutely they respond to the challenges
Here you can find out who offers a pick-up or delivery service and how to pay for the goods ordered
"This is something we should all definitely make use of
We can all make a contribution by shopping locally and making use of what is on offer locally," urges Franz Steul
Creativity and cohesion are high on the agenda of the Kümmerer project: the cup from the creative workshop for ceramics "Pintoyo"
goes well with the organic tea from "Teatastic"
Such combined offers are to be promoted and placed
The "shop window sharing" at the Bornheim Mitte subway entrance is particularly successful
offers from the side streets can also be marketed well
Martin-Marx coordinates campaigns in the district
such as the business promotion campaign "Shopping in Frankfurt" or joint special advertisements in the daily newspapers FAZ
But there are also plans for the time after the lockdown
according to plans of the Kümmererteams in the summer
a joint flea market of the traders and the longest cocktail bar in Frankfurt
and is delighted with the activities and the positive mood they have created: "Within the scope of our possibilities
we want to do everything we can to make strolling and shopping in our district centres fun
This also has a lot to do with quality of stay
the caretaker project is committed to the attractiveness and cleanliness of the neighborhood
Power boxes are beautified together with local artists
clean-up campaigns are carried out with partners such as FES
and the vacancy rate of shops is kept in view."
The project has met with great approval from the traders
"I am glad to know that in the trade association in these times of crisis everyone sticks together" says Marlen Richter
owner of the unpacking shop "Die Auffüllerei"
she got great support from other shops within a few hours - and was also able to advertise for her colleagues
"We want to remain committed to ensuring that it remains colourful around Berger Strasse and that the small shops
the many creative people and the cultural and sporting offerings survive the crisis," says Alexandra von Winning
coordinator of the Lust auf besser leben initiative
If you too would like to support the retail and gastronomy around the Berger, then take a look at the offers at: http://frankfurt-berger-strasse.de/
Delicious prospects in Bornheim: Ursula Veronese shows her new variety of German Black Forest dairy ice cream
Spring marks the start of the ice cream parlour season
ice cream parlours have been opening in the Rhine-Sieg district on the left bank of the Rhine
While business was still a little slow in one or the other of these establishments during the Easter holidays (schoolchildren of all ages and their families are often the best customers) this will change dramatically when school starts on Monday
At least that is what the ice-cream makers hope
because they are counting on a greater number of customers
It remains to be seen whether their calculations will work out
because most ice-cream parlours have had to raise prices per scoop by between ten and 30 cents to compensate for higher operating costs
It is not only the ingredients for ice cream production
water and wages are particularly noticeable
That's why many ice cream parlour owners are looking forward to the coming season with a somewhat queasy feeling
People don't spend their money as easily as they used to," says Ursula Veronesi of the traditional ice cream parlour of the same name on Königstraße in Bornheim
ice cream of the year 2018 based on a Black Forest cake
Customers have to pay 1.30 euros and thus 20 cents more than in 2022
fresh fruit or liqueur cost an additional 50 cents to 1.50 euros
Roberto and Ursula Veronesi want to offer additional varieties with new creations
an ice cream in which Italian almond biscuits
The boss will also be using sea buckthorn paste in the coming week
"New creations will only be made when the weather conditions are right
when there are warm and dry days," says the boss
who opened the Trebelli ice cream café in Merten with her husband Mario in 2019
This is because they will have to pay 30 cents more for a scoop than they did in 2022
so a scoop of "ice cream to go" will cost 1.60 euros
the Gierlich couple raised the prices for the first time; the estimated 1.40 euros and 1.60 euros respectively could not be maintained due to the general cost explosion and the double expenses for organic milk and sugar
"We decided to keep the size of the scoops
but to raise prices," boss Gierlich made clear
so the ice cream creations vary depending on the season
Mario Gierlich is very resourceful when it comes to developing new flavours
"Even if customers understand the higher prices
it will be a difficult year," says Ute Gierlich
Start of the 2023 ice cream season in Bornheim: Mario Gierlich from Eiscafe Trebelli shows rhubarb ice cream
Alessandro Guzzo has been running "Ice Cream" in Rheinbach's Pützstraße since 2019
There are currently 14 different flavours on the menu
pistachio or yoghurt ice cream with ginger and lemon are particularly popular
But vegans also get their money's worth with varieties like "avocado with lime" (non-dairy ice cream)
"Children are crazy about vanilla and stracciatella
Adults aged 30 and under like salted caramel," Guzzo told us
The latest creations on the menu are the dairy ice cream "cookie caramel" and a fruit ice cream with Calabrian bergamot and mint
The 40-year-old has also raised the price of the slightly larger scoops by ten cents to 1.50 euros
"We show customers receipts from the previous year on request"
the Chinese mixed crushed ice cubes and fruit juice with each other to make water ice
there was a further development in 400 BC in the Persian Empire
when frozen rose water was eaten with rice noodles
saffron and various types of fruit as a dessert at the royal court
It was not until the end of the 13th century that Italian explorer Marco Polo brought the art of ice-cream making to Italy
He had encountered Chinese ice cream during his travels in the Middle Kingdom and brought the know-how of ice cream production to Europe
Through the marriage of the Italian princess Catherine di Medici to the French king Henri II in 1533
ice cream gradually became popular throughout France and finally in the rest of Europe
ice cream makers all over the world create new variations
