Voters outside of the Alamo City will also have an opportunity to have their voices heard on May 3
In addition to three open city council seats
Balcones Heights voters will have a proposition on the ballot that could change the face of the police officers’ union in the city
Residents will consider “Proposition A.” If passed
Proposition A would end the Balcones Heights Police Officers Association’s collective bargaining rights
Four propositions will go before voters in Boerne
One of those propositions would introduce new three-year term limits for the city’s mayor and city council members
voters in other Bexar County cities such as Kirby and Von Ormy will also search for their next mayors
Some non-Bexar County cities will be tasked with finding a new mayor and replacing city council seats
just like San Antonio and Boerne: Bulverde

NEW BRAUNFELS — A $1.4 billion project is set to enhance State Highway 46
stretching from Comal County to Guadalupe County
as both regions anticipate significant growth and increased traffic
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce are taking proactive steps to address these challenges
including the Economic Development Foundation
convened in New Braunfels to discuss the proposed highway update
TxDOT presented plans to expand the highway to four lanes
extending from the New Braunfels area to Seguin
TxDOT projects a 78% increase in vehicles on Comal County roads by 2048
Discussions about the project began in 2020
with schematic renderings completed in 2023
The project's cost will be shared between Comal and Guadalupe counties
with Comal County expected to contribute approximately $550 million
Efforts to obtain further details on the project's timeline and funding from TxDOT and the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce are ongoing
New Braunfels Executive Storage is located at 4655 W
Scattered thunderstorms this evening becoming more widespread overnight
Lance Hughey is a resident of New Braunfels and an NBISD educator
and I spent this past Saturday morning watching adventurers and would-be sailors
traverse the waters of the Comal River in the annual “Thru the Chute” event at Prince Solms Park
It was a morning of death-defying folly and merriment as makeshift cardboard boats attempted to stay afloat down the chute and reach the other side of the river amidst a throng of spectators
There’s not much better than faux competition in the name of fun and camaraderie
and bar trivia are a great way to spend a few hours with friends and family
The boat races at the chute fit the criteria
so Addison and I decided to brave the crowds
We arrived at Landa Park over an hour early and walked to the viewing area along Hinman Island Park
It was a beautiful morning to be out in nature
proven by the number of dog walkers and runners we passed along the way
We soon realized we hadn’t arrived early enough
as finding an empty piece of grass among the revelers was a difficult endeavor
we found a few feet of space along the walkway path on the north side of the river and perched upon the rock wall
Over a thousand people must have been waiting to watch cardboard boats careening down the river
and it was still an hour before the competition began
A person behind me said they had arrived at 8 a.m
and the number of people entering the area was steady until the park service closed the gates because the area had reached capacity
capacity is shoulder to shoulder and eight people deep
The DJ played all the classic sing-along songs in an attempt to occupy the crowd until the launch of the first competitor
and I talked with several of the people around me
I found out that one family had recently moved here from the Dallas area
and I remembered having earlier cussed the crowds and the influx of move-ins that had overrun our city streets as I tried to find a place to park
Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my opinion of all of the recent transplants to the subdivisions of NB
Recent local news stories and social media have dedicated a fair amount of attention to the challenges of a growing city
and traffic are topics of conversation that bring about the ire of every New Braunfelsite
Transplants and city officials tasked with solving the myriad of challenges bear the brunt of the anger
but taking a step back provides a clearer picture of the “growing” pains
I’ve often found myself wishing we could put a wall up around the city to eliminate the “Auslanders” from moving in
and then I meet a new resident out at the tube chute
The discussion with the folks from DFW confirmed the obvious
They moved to New Braunfels because it’s a great place to live
They had gone to the Willie Nelson/Robert Earl Keen concert at Whitewater a couple of weeks ago
and were going to the craft beer festival on Saturday afternoon
so I bet we could see each other again tomorrow
if I can get the wife out to the festivities
that may be a difficult proposition because I won tickets from Tom Gillam on KNBT to see the Band of Heathens at Gruene Hall tonight
so the wife and I may be recovering from a late night out honky-tonkin’ (as my dad would say)
recovery from a night out requires more than just a shower and a few hours of sleep
I understand why people from California to New York
We’ve kept the secret for as long as we could
News has traveled of the greatness of New Braunfels
Problems that the city will have to tackle from water conservation to issues caused by new construction
I’m sure I will get frustrated and reminisce about the “good ole days”
The move-ins just want a piece of what I’ve taken advantage of for the last 20 years
also referred to as a managed parking system
would allow downtown visitors to park for free for the first hour
A photo shows an aerial view of New Braunfels Town Center at Creekside
Construction is underway on Creekside Town Center’s newest retail addition
Sprouts offers a wide variety of natural and organic products and is known for its fresh produce and meat selection and bulk goods
The new 23,434-square-foot store will be located at 275 Creekside Crossing near the Spec’s and HomeGoods stores
the development company that owns Creekside Town Center
anticipates the store opening in early 2026
"Sprouts is a great addition to both the community and Creekside,” NewQuest President and CEO Austin Alvis said
“Not only does this add a component to the project we have been missing
but it also kicks off another phase of development that is sure to bring even more life to the area.”
Sprouts currently has over 50 locations throughout Texas
including three stores in the San Antonio metro area
This will be the first grocery store in the Creekside Town Center development and the first organic-focused supermarket in Comal County
The supermarket is not yet hiring for its New Braunfels location
but each new Sprouts store typically creates around 80 to 90 new full-time and part-time jobs
according to a press release from the company
construction is also underway at Creekside Town Center on Topgolf
which will be located at 427 Creekside Way
The two-story building will include 62 hitting bays
Election Day voting runs from 7 a.m.-7 p.m
several members of the New Braunfels Lions Club traveled to Belize
working with the Belize City Lions Club to make a difference in the community
The trip represented the New Braunfels Lions Club’s first international mission trip
Club members also did art projects with local students
gave food to those experiencing homelessness and hosted an open health fair in a park
The Lions mantra is “where there is a need
Rodgers said it was amazing to see the Belize City Lions’ hearts on display during the service trip
She also shared testimonials from several New Braunfels Lions who went to Belize
“One of the most impactful experiences for me was during the diabetes screening,” said Kyle Wood
“I had the chance to tell a young woman who seemed anxious and uncertain that her glucose levels were normal
and it reminded me how powerful knowledge and reassurance can be when someone is afraid of what they don’t understand.”
Lion Doreen Fisher said she thought providing vision screening for adults who had never had their eyes examined was particularly moving
She also found satisfaction in discovering children with undiagnosed vision issues
“They now have an opportunity at a young age to seek help and change the trajectory of their learning and communication abilities,” she said
Rodgers said she enjoyed sharing the art projects with the kids as they promote skills such as creativity
everyone brought something meaningful to the table,” Wood said
we helped plant seeds of love and attention that I believe will last.”

George Green speaks at the Leadership New Braunfels Alumni Association's candidates forum Tuesday
George Green is looking to find a spot in public office once again
The former New Braunfels City Councilman is vying for the District 1 position against incumbent Andres Campos and longtime finance manager Toni Carter
“Keep Christ in Christmas,” which he said was a key issue when he was on City Council for two terms from 2013 to 2017
that was a big issue that the Council had to vote on
I was born and raised here and I thought that was always just a ‘gimme,’ but we had to vote on it,” Green said of the reasoning behind his campaign slogan
In 2022, Green ran for the Texas House District 73 seat. During that campaign, he received a $10,000 fine from the Texas Ethics Commission for delinquent filing
Green said the fine is because of technical error
I think there was some technical issue,” Green said
I had submitted the report is what I remember
I had already submitted the report and there was an overlap
Because of what he believes to be an incorrect fine
The Herald-Zeitung reached out to the Texas Ethics Commission to question Green’s claims that the fine listed under the delinquent filer list was due to a “technical issue” and an “overlap.”
A representative from the Texas Ethics Commission confirmed Green’s $10,000 fine and noted there was no “technical issue” made with regard to the City Council candidate
The representative also said that the penalty for not paying a fine could result in a lawsuit from the Texas Office of the Attorney General

New Braunfels residents now have a local spot to pick up medical cannabis products
opened a temporary pickup site in New Braunfels at 1433 Hanz Drive
The pickup location is open on Wednesdays from 11 a.m
"Each time we open our doors in a new location
it's another promise kept to Texans seeking relief with medical cannabis," said Texas Original CEO Nico Richardson
The location offers a variety of medical cannabis products

Both New Braunfels ISD and Comal ISD have received B ratings for the 2023 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings following a years-long release delay after many Texas school districts argued that the ratings would not be an accurate reflection of school performance and improvement.
The TEA grades districts and each of their campuses on an A-F system, with a major component being standardized test scores. Other components include graduation rates and college, career and military readiness (CCMR).
In a message sent to parents on April 24, CISD stated that the 2022-23 ratings were calculated based on the new STAAR 2.0 results, in which students took the test online for the first time. The test included new interactive item types and embedded written responses across all content areas.
The ratings were also based on a revised accountability rating system.
Districts have argued that changes to the A-F system including a significant increase in CCMR standards were unfair and implemented without adequate notice, according to CISD’s message. The new system raised the bar for an A rating from 60% to 88% of graduates meeting CCMR criteria, which is a 28-point jump applied retroactively.
Many school districts across Texas joined a lawsuit to prevent the ratings’ release in 2023, concerned about an appearance of underperformance despite making improvements.
TEA posted the 2023 accountability ratings on April 24 after the Texas 15th Court of Appeals overturned a previous injunction blocking their release.
CISD board president Russ Garner commented on the district’s B rating for 2023 at a regular board meeting Thursday night.
“Through a lot of hard effort, we were a B district in 2023,” Garner said. “Now that was after we had been an A district in 2022, so you go, ‘Oh my gosh, maybe we have some concern.’ Well, we certainly don’t have any concern because the A district that we were in 2022 is nowhere near close to the district that we are today as a B district due to the hard work of everyone here and everything you guys have been doing to move the needle to increase our programs.”
Regarding specific campus ratings for CISD schools in New Braunfels, Canyon High School, Church Hill Middle School, Comal Academy, Danville Middle School and Goodwin Frazier Elementary received B ratings. Canyon Middle School, Clear Spring Elementary, Freiheit Elementary and Morningside Elementary received C ratings.
Hoffman Lane Elementary, Memorial Early College High School and Oak Creek Elementary received As.
For NBISD, New Braunfels High School, the NBISD Learning Center, New Braunfels Middle School, Oak Run Middle School, Lone Star Early Childhood Center, Lamar Elementary, Memorial Elementary, Seele Elementary, Veramendi Elementary and Walnut Springs Elementary received Bs. County Line Elementary, Klein Road Elementary and Voss Farms Elementary received Cs. Carl Schurz Elementary received a D.
The NBHS Ninth Grade Center received an A.
“Regardless of when the A-F ratings are released, NBISD campus administrators have remained focused on working closely with teachers and district staff to develop strategies that build on our strengths and will address our areas of growth,” said NBISD Chief Academic Officer Kara Bock, in a news release. “At NBISD, we are committed to providing a high-quality education for every student, every day.”
TEA is prevented from sharing more recent school ratings from the 2023-24 school year due to a separate, ongoing lawsuit, according to a TEA news release. School performance ratings from the 2024-25 school year are set to be issued this August.

Detectives looking into the events surrounding a New Braunfels woman’s fentanyl overdose death say they have cracked the case and named a man they believe is responsible.
Deputies served a murder by induction warrant Tuesday on a 24-year-old man already jailed on an unrelated charge in Comal County, Guadalupe County Sheriff Joshua Ray said.
“Investigators collected sufficient evidence to secure a felony arrest warrant for Hayden Ross Corbin for murder by induction of fentanyl, which is a first-degree felony,” he said. “Corbin is already currently incarcerated in the Comal County Jail on unrelated manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance penalty group 1/1B and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, penalty group 1/1B.”
The arrest is related to an investigation deputies began Feb. 6 after finding 24-year-old Adison Rodriguez dead on her bed at her home in the 300 block of Leaf Lane in the Guadalupe County section of New Braunfels, Ray said.
“Investigators discovered the deceased had taken what was presumed to be ‘M-30s,’ also known as ‘Perc30s,’ which are counterfeit Percocet,” he said. “These pills usually contain … or are laced with fentanyl.”
Corbin is an “avid” Percocet user and was trafficking narcotics around the time of Rodriguez’s death, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case. The two spoke several times via text message and voice call the night of her death, the complaint read.
Deputies accuse Corbin of supplying Rodriguez with a lethal dose of fentanyl, according to the complaint. Investigators collected enough evidence to have 25th Judicial District Judge William D. Old III sign a warrant for Corbin’s arrest on the first-degree murder charge, the complaint read.
Murder by induction is a clause recently added to the murder statute in Texas, Ray said. It went into effect Sept. 1, 2023 due to an increase in overdoses, especially fentanyl-related overdose deaths, he said.
It helps law enforcement and prosecutors better target “drug dealers that distribute these narcotics that end up with lethal effects,” the sheriff said.
Online records showed Corbin had no bail amounts set for the warrants.
Judge Old set a bond of $500,000 on the Guadalupe County warrant for murder by induction.
The Book Haus is pictured on April 3, 2025. The store is located at 344 Landa Street in New Braunfels.
A New Braunfels bookstore is making its return. After closing in April of 2023, The Book Haus will be reopening later this month.
“I’m [looking forward] to just getting back in the community, bringing books to people,” Book Haus owner Sabrina Caldwell said. “It’s nice just being able to interact with people.”
The bookstore is set to open on Saturday, April 26, which is also known as Independent Bookstore Day.
“It is such an important [day] for bookstores, especially independent bookstores, because it [raises] awareness of supporting independent bookstores and showing what we can do for the community, how we give back,” Caldwell said. “It’s also supposed to be bigger than that … it’s supposed to show that if you support a small business, like an independent bookstore, we can help the community, whereas if you buy books off of Amazon, you’re supporting somebody who doesn’t even help the community.”
The Book Haus will mainly offer used books, with a few new copies of popular and new titles in stock. Along with used books, The Book Haus will carry titles from local authors, including Matt Micheli, who will be at the bookstore’s grand opening signing copies of his horror books.
“That’s always one of the fun things that we try to do,” Caldwell said. “We try to have local authors out and support them, do anything we can to help them succeed.”
The store will also offer a buyback program, which will allow customers to bring in their used books and resell them to The Book Haus for store credit. Caldwell says the store will begin accepting buybacks ahead of the opening and that it will be announced on social media when the program begins.
The Book Haus opened for the first time in 2018 and closed two years ago when Caldwell’s family moved away from New Braunfels. The store moved a few times and was located at 992 State Highway 46 when it closed.
“We were able to give back to the community — we had a great following,” Caldwell said. “But then, our family decided we were going to move away for a little bit. We thought we were going to move permanently, but we were gone a year, basically, and I was like, ‘Nope, I want to go back to New Braunfels."
When Caldwell and her family moved back to town, she says she had many people ask her about reopening the store. When she could not decide what to do after moving back, she decided to bring Book Haus back to New Braunfels.
“I said, 'I’m gonna do it — I’m gonna see what happens,'" Caldwell said.
The Book Haus is located at 344 Landa Street and its grand reopening celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

Festival attendees wait in line for lemonade at the In A Pickle Festival on March 15, 2025. People near the front of the line said they had been waiting for over an hour.
On Saturday, March 15, Krystal and Tim Wertman of JG Events hosted the In A Pickle Festival in New Braunfels at the Comal County Fairgrounds.
The event was highly publicized and drew thousands of attendees from New Braunfels and across Texas, resulting in large crowds, long lines and traffic — some say without adequate crowd control or access to bathrooms. The Herald-Zeitung published an article covering the event online Monday afternoon and in the Tuesday, March 18 print edition.
The paper reached out to Krystal for comment on Monday, who said JG Events was preparing a statement and would respond to comment when the statement was ready. Krystal did not send the Herald-Zeitung a statement, so the article ran without a statement from JG Events.
Shortly after the article was posted online, JG Events released the following statement on Facebook:
“Dear Pickle Enthusiasts and Residents of New Braunfels,
“Our ticket sales were carefully managed and stayed within our calculated capacity. We offered tickets at the door, informing the public that they would be available on a first-come, first-serve basis until sold out. Unfortunately, this led to an unexpected frenzy, with thousands of attendees arriving hours early. Once the gates opened, we worked diligently to admit guests as quickly and safely as possible, but we understand that many guests without tickets had to be turned away at the door.
“During the festival setup, we were confronted with unexpected weather conditions, including 35 mph wind gusts. Our team used all available resources to assist vendors in removing their canopies to minimize loss and to keep the vendors and customers safe.
“For safety and security, we had 13 police officers on the ground and 5 medical staff available to assist with any emergencies. Their presence was crucial in ensuring the safety of all attendees, and we are grateful for their efforts under challenging conditions.
“Despite these challenges, we delivered on our promise to bring a unique pickle experience. We hosted over 50 pickle vendors and a total of over 200 vendors, all offering unique pickled items. We are proud of the diverse and creative offerings that showcased the love and passion for pickles that inspired this festival.
“We are actively reviewing all feedback and working on solutions to improve future events.
“We are working hard to plan for next year, to ensure a well-organized, enjoyable, and stress-free festival experience for all guests. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to making next year’s festival even better.
“We would like to thank the guests that were able to attend. The vendors praised the friendliness of the visitors stating they were very happy, giving and genuinely caring people. We are happy for those who have reached out to express their gratitude for the event.
“Our team is committed to learning from this experience and ensuring a more enjoyable, well-organized festival in the future. We appreciate your understanding and passion for pickles. Your feedback will help us grow and improve. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
The highly-anticipated In A Pickle Festival left many New Braunfels residents and visitors disappointed on Saturday.
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — The New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce and surrounding area financial leaders, like Greater SATX, is emphasizing the importance of international partnerships for economic development.
Jonathan Packer, CEO of the Chamber, highlighted the significance of relationship building between New Braunfels and other countries, stating, "Partnerships are critical in economic development, because you can't do a good deal without a good relationship."
This focus on collaboration was a major topic at last week's "Megaregion" luncheon.
A study from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce revealed that the San Antonio-New Braunfels area is the most dependent U.S. city on Canadian exports, contributing significantly to the region's revenue.
In 2023, the area generated over $12 billion in exports, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Financial leaders stress the importance of nurturing these international relationships.
Looking ahead, Packer said the area will continue to seek and strengthen agreements to ensure financial benefits for all involved.

Texas – Three San Antonio police officers all faced contemplated indefinite suspensions after being accused of criminal wrongdoing in New Braunfels in separate incidents over an 11-month period
Hard-hitting journalism from the KSAT Investigates team delivered straight to your inbox
It was almost like getting assaulted again,” said Maria
the former live-in girlfriend of SAPD Officer John Sylvester
who avoided assault charges after the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office declined to pursue the case last summer
who asked that KSAT not use her last name or show her face
suffered injuries during a physical confrontation with Sylvester and his ex-wife outside of his New Braunfels home in March 2024
“New Braunfels Police Department just wanted to cover one of their own and help out one of their own
And it didn’t matter that they saw everything with their own eyes,” said Maria
who slammed NBPD’s decision to file the case with prosecutors instead of arresting Sylvester at the scene
told KSAT her relationship with Sylvester had fractured last year
because the officer had placed an Apple AirTag tracking device in the vehicle the couple shared
After a verbal dispute with Sylvester at his home last March
removed the tracking device from her car and
Maria said she woke up to find her car was no longer at the hotel
She told KSAT she suspects Sylvester used her daughter’s phone location to find the vehicle and drive it back to his New Braunfels home in the middle of the night
After Maria and her daughter took a rideshare back to Sylvester’s home
Maria said she found her car backed up to Sylvester’s garage door with his truck parked closely in front of it
so it would be hard to get out,” Maria said
After Maria said she grabbed more of her belongings and attempted to leave
“John came outside and he told me to get out of the car
‘No.’ He reached in multiple times and turned my vehicle off.”
Maria told KSAT she turned the car back on and bumped into Sylvester’s truck while trying to drive out
pulled her from the vehicle and slammed her to the ground
holding her there for approximately 10 minutes
NBPD officers who arrived at the scene found Sylvester sitting on top of Maria and ordered him to stop pinning her to the ground
Sylvester’s ex-wife kicked her while Maria tried to get her purse from the woman
Maria shared photos with KSAT taken after the altercation showing that she suffered bruises and scratch marks
As a result of the lengthy physical struggle
Maria said it was difficult for her to walk for several days
NBPD officers separated all three adults and then met with Maria near a neighboring school to take photos of her injuries and to get a statement from her
they filed the case with the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office
Guadalupe County Attorney Dave Willborn confirmed in a written statement to KSAT that the case was submitted to his office in June 2024
“A decision was made to not proceed because there was insufficient evidence to prove the assault allegations against either suspect and the elements of theft (specifically the intent to deprive the owner of their property permanently or for so extended a period of time that a major portion of the value or enjoyment of the property is lost to the owner) were not present
I reviewed the cases personally and am of the opinion that the original decision not to proceed was correct
There is no question that the suspects engaged in questionable conduct
but it is not conduct that meets the elements of a provable criminal case,” Willborn wrote
Maria confirmed she participated in about 10 counseling sessions at the Crisis Center of Comal County
she said she is finally able to speak about what happened
I didn’t even know who he was,” Maria said
“He did things I never thought he was capable of doing
I don’t think he should be in that position or hold the title of being a peace officer in the State of Texas or anywhere.”
SAPD officials confirm Sylvester is still employed with the agency and is currently assigned to the West Patrol C-shift
Sylvester sued Maria in Guadalupe County Small Claims Court in August
The suit sought damages to his garage door and truck from the altercation outside his home and asked for reimbursement for car payments made on behalf of Maria as well as for phones given to Maria and her daughter
A judge later awarded Sylvester $3,300 plus court costs
Maria said the judgment was for payments he made on her car that covered the previous year
Sylvester did not respond to an email from KSAT seeking comment for this story

placed his hand on the breast of the homeowner’s mother after asking her if her breasts were real
The woman told New Braunfels police that Duque’s actions were offensive
Duque said “he could do whatever he wanted,” records show
Duque then started a fight with a man at the party who confronted Duque about the groping incident
Duque swung at the man five times during the altercation
and was punched by the man three to four times
Duque broke a window at the residence with his hand and then ripped a door curtain on the back door while forcing his way back into the home
A New Braunfels police officer called to the scene described Duque as “too intoxicated to even talk to
a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from him and was unable to maintain his balance
The officer later told an SAPD supervisor that Duque was very disrespectful and “that is absolutely
how an officer should be acting outside of uniform,” records show
A person at the residence told NBPD that Duque had likely consumed more than six beers
four to five “jello shots,” and at least two “pickle shots,” a mixture of hard alcohol and pickle juice
After Duque was taken to an emergency room
he cursed at staff and refused to follow hospital procedures
NBPD listed Duque as a suspect for both indecent assault and criminal mischief
because the woman whose breast he touched and the owner of the home both declined to pursue charges
an NBPD spokesman previously confirmed to KSAT
The spokesman told KSAT this month that NBPD responded to 10 total calls for service involving Duque from 2023 to 2024
“most of which were for verbal disturbances or physical disturbances where he was either determined to be the victim or the other parties declined to prosecute.”

Duque will serve the suspension if his indefinite suspension is overturned
an SAPD official previously confirmed to KSAT
A contemplated indefinite suspension for SAPD Officer Alexander Mena was shortened to 45 days in October after he signed a last-chance agreement to stay with the department
Mena consumed up to 13 alcoholic drinks while out on the town in New Braunfels last June
NBPD officers were then called to his apartment after receiving reports that Mena was walking around the complex’s parking lot with a gun in his hand
While an NBPD officer tried to resolve a dispute between Mena and his ex-girlfriend
Officers declined to criminally charge Mena after finding no evidence of a physical disturbance
