Production: Components for 5,2 million vehicles of the Volkswagen Group (2024)
Plant The Brunswick plant is the oldest of all Volkswagen AG plants
it stands for high technical competence and is one of the world's leading manufacturers of chassis components
the Brunswick plant has been a part of Volkswagen Group Components
an independent business unit within the Group's Technology Division under the umbrella of the Volkswagen AG
responsible for the production of strategic components for the Group’s vehicle producing brands
Battery technology has been part of the product portfolio since 2013
starting with the battery system for the e-up
The Braunschweig plant now produces battery systems for a large number of battery-electric and hybrid vehicles and has thus assumed a central role in the electric mobility of the Volkswagen brand
The other key products such as chassis and steering systems are both developed and produced at the site - for both conventional and electric and hybrid vehicles of the group
The total area of the Brunswick site covers around 682,000 square meters
further axle production plants in Isenbüttel
Meerane and Barsinghausen as well as a logistics center in Harvesse belong to Volkswagen Group Components Brunswick
The component production facility manufactures front and rear axles
In 2023 components for 5.2 million cars were produced. The site is systematically geared towards e-mobility
Among the customers are the vehicle-building plants of Volkswagen Passenger Cars
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as well as MAN
the company's own plant engineering department develops and manufactures production systems for internal Group customers worldwide
Management Martin Schmuck is head of the Brunswick plant

Pauli lost 2-1 at Eintracht Braunschweig on Sunday in a friendly behind closed doors
The second-division outfit took the lead on the half-hour through a Manolis Saliakas own goal
but Under-23 forward Romeo Aigbekaen equalised almost immediately
Robin Krauße grabbed the winner for the home side four minutes from time
Head coach Alexander Blessin went into the only friendly of the short mid-season break not only without the injured Karol Mets
Connor Metcalfe and Elias Saad but also Philipp Treu
The game also came around too early for new recruit Abdoulie Ceesay after just one training session with his new teammates
There was a light covering of snow on the pitch when the game kicked off inside an empty Eintracht Stadium
The Boys in Brown had more of the play in the opening stages and fashioned the first chance of the game in the sixth minute
Oladapo Afolayan knocked a low ball in for Morgan Guilavogui
whose effort from just inside the box was gathered by Braunschweig keeper Lennart Grill
Manolis Saliakas fired well off target from distance
Eintracht's opening chance came from a 15th minute corner when former St- Pauli Under-23 player Max Marie had a header saved by Nikola Vasilj
who was wearing the captain's armband for the first time
In a high-intensity contest that was lacking in quality at times
the Boys in Brown combined their way into the opposition box seven minutes later and Under-23 forward Romeo Aigbekaen unleashed a shot on goal from a tight angle
but Grill was not to be beaten at his near post
The home side responded soon after on the counter
Fabio Kaufmann pulling the trigger from the left corner of the box
Andreas Albers almost gave his side the lead on the half hour
Sanoussy Ba salvaging the situation for his colours with Grill already beaten
Braunschweig launched a counterattack and Ba
who had advanced up the pitch very quickly
dispatched a cross from the right into the middle
where Saliakas put through his own goal under challenge from Johan Gómez
and Aigbekaen smashed a shot into the roof of the net from eight metres to level the scores
Marwin Schmitz and Saliakas then tried their luck from distance
but Grill was on hand to make the save both times
The Braunschweig custodian also produced a brilliant stop to keep out a Nemeth header from a Saliakas corner in the 41st minute to ensure the first period ended all square
meaning Noah Weißhaupt became the second new signing to make his debut
whose cross was headed a whisker wide of the Eintracht goal by Johannes Eggestein
now with Marko Johansson in goal instead of Lennart Grill and Robin Krauße on for Ermin Bičakčić
made more of a game of it in the second half and could have restored their advantage from a 50th minute free-kick
but Ben Voll produced a fine reflex save to deny Krauße
Marie then hit a distance effort well off target on 54
The Boys in Brown continued to press but were left to wait for the next goalscoring opportunity
Just seven weeks had elapsed since the two teams last met in a friendly
Both teams looked to get forward in the remaining 20 minutes
Scott Banks received the ball on the right and cut inside before releasing a shot on goal
only for it to take deflection that allowed Johannson to gather
Fabio di Michele Sanchez pushed forward effectively and when the ball came back to him his header was cleared off the line by Lars Ritzka
Krauße rose to meet a Marie corner and found the net to win it for the home side
Alexander Blessin: "I wanted to give all the lads 45 minutes
our gegenpressing was good and we created pressure
In the second half we didn't do enough in terms of our movement and the way we wanted to play
We were too defensive in our thinking and didn't defend forward
We simply chased the ball and didn't get in behind them."
Grill (Johansson 46') – Nikolaou (Kunze 75')

Logan BraunschweigBlazers Clinch Series After 5-3 Win Over South Alabama2/22/2025 5:02:00 PM | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM - Dominant pitching and timely hitting put UAB (5-1) over South Alabama (4-2) on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at Young Memorial Field
This marks the Blazers' first five game winning streak since 2022
Reigning American Conference Pitcher of the Week Colin Daniel battled through six innings against the Jaguar offense. The junior right-hander struck out eight USA batters, gave up three runs, and walked two. Ryan Olson pitched the final three innings of the ballgame
striking out three and surrendering two hits
Todd Clay and the UAB offense started off on a good note on Saturday as the junior from Auburn singled up the middle to score Logan Braunschweig in the 1st inning
Both teams were held scoreless from that point on until the top of the 4th
The Jaguars scored their first runs of the weekend in the top of the 4th as Hector Mangual singled through the left side to score Kyle Morrison
The next batter was Brennan Holt who singled through the right side to score Josh Stevenson
Mangual scored on a sac fly by Cole Ketzner to put the Jags up 3-1
The Blazers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. After Clay got hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count, Camden Hayslip sent his first home run of the season over the right field wall to tie the game at three a piece
Three straight walks got the Green and Gold going again in the 6th inning. Hayslip reached on a fielder's choice to bring Logan Braunschweig home to put the Blazers back in front
Braunschweig finished 2-3 with two runs and a walk
He has now reached safely in an American Conference leading 34 straight games dating back to last season
A couple of bunt singles by Tyler Waugh and Alex Cheeseman had the Blazers threatening again in the bottom half of the 6th inning. That's when Braunschweig doubled down the left field line to score Waugh for the final UAB run of the day.
Daniel and Olson combined to shut out the Jaguars in the final five innings of the game. Olson is the third Blazer this season to record a save.
The Blazers go for the sweep of the Jaguars on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field. Kids 12 and under have the opportunity to run the bases after the game.

Tre Mitchell is taking his talents to Germany
The former Kentucky Wildcat has signed with Basketball Löwen Braunschweig in the Basketball Bundesliga
the top tier of German professional basketball
who finished his college career at Kentucky after stints at West Virginia
went undrafted in April and played for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Summer League
Although Mitchell’s time with the Thunder in the NBA Summer League didn’t land him a deal in the NBA or G-League, he did catch the eye of Löwen managing director Nils Mittmann, who was in Vegas for the games.

“After his appearances in the Summer League, I didn’t think we would have a chance of signing Tre,” Mittmann said in Löwen’s release. “We were looking for a mobile, athletic, and rebounding big man who can keep up with our high tempo of play. Tre brings all of that. He is a versatile player with very good skills who will give us many opportunities defensively, but also offensively on the board and with his shot.
“For a player from a US college, Tre already has a lot of experience and seems very composed. I am convinced that he will adapt to European basketball very quickly and bring a lot of joy to the spectators and us.”
Congrats to Tre. Maybe we’ll see him back in the Bluegrass next summer with La Familia for The Basketball Tournament?

DFS Aviation Services (DAS) has opened its Remote Tower Control Center (RTC Center) in the north of Germany
With the support of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs
this innovative entity entered the operational implementation phase in November
The air traffic control services for Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport will already be partially taken over from the Remote Tower Center during the current implementation phase
the official opening of the Center was celebrated yesterday
The highlight of the event was the ceremonial ribbon cutting
Among the guests of honour were Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Olaf Lies as well as the Lord Mayors of Braunschweig and Wolfsburg
Their participation underlined the immense importance of this project for the region
The implementation of the project represents an important step in Lower Saxony’s digital strategy ‘Masterplan Digitalisation’
Lower Saxony's Minister of Transport Olaf Lies praises the project: “The remote monitoring of airports is clearly the future and we in Lower Saxony are at the forefront here at Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport with the RTC Center
The current shortage of skilled workers also poses challenges for air traffic control
Bundling locations can make things easier here and I am pleased that digitalisation is once again showing its practical benefits
This is well-invested money and I would like to thank everyone involved.”
emphasizes: “Research Airport Braunschweig is an important location for aviation and mobility research in Germany
The technology currently utilised for remote monitoring of various airports was co-developed and implemented at the German Aerospace Center
With the establishment of the RTC Center Niedersachsen in Braunschweig
both Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport associated business and science cluster will be further developed in terms of quality and functionality and strengthened in the long term”
we are creating a platform that promotes cooperation between science
research and industry and consolidates our region as a leading innovation location for aviation technology and digitisation
High-precision GPS and positioning technologies are a key technology far beyond flying
they are also used in the Lower Saxony test field of Automated and Connected Driving."
as Emden Airport will also be integrated into the RTC Center in the coming months
after the full takeover of services for Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport
With the leading aerodrome for the offshore wind industry
an Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) service will be integrated into an RTC center for the first time
DFS CEO Arndt Schoenemann said: “With the Remote Tower Control Centre in Braunschweig
our subsidiary DFS Aviation Services is opening the second tower centre of the DFS Group for airports in Germany
digitised air traffic control in Europe and continuing our pioneering role.”
Deutsche Flugsicherung has been operating an RTC center at the international commercial airport in Leipzig for the airports of Saarbrücken and Erfurt
air traffic controllers use high-resolution video and infrared cameras to monitor traffic in the air and on the ground
An elaborate camera system on the Braunschweig control tower permanently provides the air traffic controllers with a 360-degree image of the airport
in cooperation with Frequentis DFS Aerosense GmbH and ESPA GmbH
is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the RTC Center
which has capacities for a total of six airports
DAS is working with the Braunschweig-based Institute for Flight Guidance of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V.
DLR) to advance the further development of the RTC project with regard to multiple-remote applications
"The project was very ambitious and we are proud of the opening of our RTC Centre in Lower Saxony
We look forward to the further development of our Centre in cooperation with our partners"

the space is organised as an open plan and grows around a centrally located service block
within a square grid of 3m x 3m composed of hollow steel profiles of 10cm x 10cm
The framed structure of columns and beams eliminates the need for internal walls

This versatile disposition of the plan offers a variety of spatial identities

A seemingly arbitrary distribution of informal as well as formal seating and workstations across the floor plan demonstrates a consistent and therefore egalitarian ecosystem

the configuration of the floor plate contrives two distinct volumes—the intimate

27 January 2025 marks the 80th year since the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp
Around 1.5 million people were murdered here
President Angela Ittel and Jakob Stahlhofen from the AStA’s anti-fascism and anti-racism department laid flowers at the Stolperschwelle in front of the old building in memory of the victims of National Socialism
During a university-wide minute of silence
we also commemorated the more than 50 members of our university who were expelled
‘In memory of the victims of National Socialism at our university
murdered,’ is the inscription on the stumbling block that has been in front of the old building since 2014
members of the TU Braunschweig gather there to commemorate the victims who were persecuted
disenfranchised and murdered by National Socialism
taking responsibility for the present and the future
are the central messages on this day of remembrance
eighty years after the concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet soldiers

the Stolperschwelle at the old building has been the place of remembrance at the TU Braunschweig
TU President Angela Ittel warned that remembrance is more than just remembering the past
and emphasised the university as a place of responsibility
we are witnessing a strengthening of authoritarian currents
and people are being marginalised because of their origin or identity – including ‘deportation tickets’ being dropped into letterboxes
Right-wing ideas are once again finding their way into parliaments and social discourse and are spreading via social networks
which often act as amplifiers for hatred and agitation
It is our task as a university to counteract these developments through education
when scientific findings are disparaged as ‘fake news’
And it is essential that we take a clear and decisive stand against discrimination
against anti-Semitism and against any form of inhumanity
This is another reason why we are no longer active on the platform X and support the joint appeal of more than 60 universities and research institutions to stop communicating there
hate speech and agitation is incompatible with the value system of the TU Braunschweig
Our university sees itself as a place of critical thinking
where well-founded opinions are formed and defended in open debates with factual arguments
But our university also sees itself as a place of responsibility
By researching the Nazi history of our university or working on projects against racism and to strengthen diversity and inclusion
we help to keep the lessons of history alive
But responsibility does not end at the walls of a university
our opposition to injustice that makes the difference
27 January reminds us that we must not stand idly by when injustice occurs
Or as Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer says: ‘Respect people
Jakob Stahlhofen from the AStA Anti-Fascist and Anti-Racist Department warns of the resurgence of right-wing extremism
Right-wing extremist violence has continued to cost many lives since the end of the Second World War
Be it the pogroms of Hoyerswerda and Rostock-Lichtenhagen in the 90s
the terrorist attacks of Halle and Hanau or the NSU murders
Right-wing violence and right-wing terror have long since become ubiquitous again
the far-right ideology has been getting louder
and has long since arrived in the centre of society
Today’s Nazis are taking their new self-confidence to the streets: CSDs are being deliberately threatened and attacked
politicians are being attacked while hanging up election posters
and the premises of anti-fascist groups are being smeared with swastikas and threats
thousands of members of the LGBTQ* community
an uncountable number of political opponents and resistance fighters

the Stolperschwelle on the steps in front of the Historic Main Building has been a place of remembrance since 2014
This was laid by the Cologne sculptor Gunter Demnig in cooperation with the association “Stolpersteine für Braunschweig e.V.”
“In memory of the victims of National Socialism at our university

which keeps the memory of the darkest chapter of German
but also of our university history alive at this prominent location and at which a commemoration has been held since 2018
The expulsion of politically and racially disliked persons began at the Technische Hochschule as early as 1930
With more than a third of the entire teaching staff
the proportion of expelled teachers was far higher than the average at other universities in the German Reich
Two publications by TU Braunschweig contributed to processing the period of National Socialist persecution
the volume “Opfer nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung an der Technischen Hochschule Braunschweig 1930 bis 1945“ (Victims of National Socialist Persecution at the Technische Hochschule Braunschweig 1930 to 1945) was published by Michael Wettern and Daniel Weßelhöft under the direction of Hans-Ulrich Ludewig
With 51 short biographies of those persecuted for racist and political reasons at the TH
TU Braunschweig wants to commemorate the victims and keep the diversity of their fates in mind
In the second publication “Von fleißigen Mitmachern
Die Technische Hochschule Braunschweig im Nationalsozialismus” (About industrious participants
The Technische Hochschule Braunschweig under National Socialism) by Daniel Weßelhöft
72 short biographies of people who were active in various functions at TH Braunschweig between 1930 and 1945 in the sense of National Socialism show how different a National Socialist commitment could appear

How can Braunschweig’s city centre be redesigned to make it more attractive
In this year’s competition for the Johannes Göderitz Prize
architecture students from five universities were invited to submit designs that would decisively change the image of the city centre and show sustainable perspectives
The award ceremony and exhibition opening will take place on 25 October at the Flebbe Haus in Braunschweig
This year’s student competition focused on the transformation of Braunschweig’s city centre
This urban space is characterised by the city’s main shopping streets
the replica of the castle with a shopping centre and cultural institutions
the location of important public functions such as the town hall
the Higher Regional Court and Braunschweig Cathedral
The task of the architecture students was to develop innovative and sustainable concepts for a programmatic and spatial reorganisation
The aim was to see the current problems of the city centre as an opportunity
Yu Chen and Zhiyuan Jiang from Technische Universität Berlin received the first prize for their design “Urban production: the future of Braunschweig’s city centre”
Paul Gumpricht and Daniel Afriyie Owusu from Leibniz University Hannover received the second prize for their work “Future 5”
The two special prizes go to Till Connor and Lina Kolshorn
for their design “Dear Braunschweig” and to Eric Kurzbuch and Conrad Peschel from TU Dresden for “Lifebelt Braunschweig”
Recognition prizes of €1,000 were awarded to Nadine Willems and Justin Pauls (RWTH Aachen) for their project “Desire for the City” and to Leon Krug and Cecilia Redante (TU Braunschweig) for “Braunschweig Triad”
The Johannes Göderitz Prize regularly addresses current urban policy issues
The competition provides a platform for participating students from different urban planning institutes to position their urban design as a personal statement on the respective task
the awarding city receives a wide range of different designs
“Societal changes such as the turnaround in transport and progressive digitalisation
which are significantly changing the way we work and trade
mean that there is an urgent need for a new spatial and programmatic orientation of the city centre
the ongoing climate crisis requires a new approach to urban spaces,” says Professor Uwe Brederlau
head of the Institute for Urban Design and Design Methodology at TU Braunschweig and chairman of the Johannes Göderitz Foundation
The competition entries submitted by the students have all taken up this challenge
“City centres are in a constant process of change
show interesting ideas and experiments and provide an exciting basis for discussion about the future development of the city centre,” said Heinz-Georg Leuer
head of the city’s planning and building control office
“The first prize takes up the idea of bringing production areas back into the city centre
thus reviving an important element of the city centres during industrialisation
chairman of the competition jury and head of the city of Braunschweig’s Department of Urban Planning and Geoinformation
emphasised the diversity of the different approaches and the high level of elaboration of the works
and pointed out the high degree of individuality of the designs
the works were viewed and intensively discussed
Students from the participating universities – RWTH Aachen
TU Dresden and Leibniz Universität Hannover – submitted a total of 22 projects
“The content of the designs varies greatly
but they all paint imaginative pictures of the city centre that make us look forward to the future of Braunschweig
It is great to see how many positive concepts there are for the development of the city centre that go beyond the mere economisation of space,” says Professor Uwe Brederlau
In their design “Urban Production”
Yu Chen and Zhiyuan Jiang address the city centre as a place of flexible and decentralised production
Taking Braunschweig-based companies in the clothing
biomedical and aviation industries as a starting point
the idea is to expand and complement these areas with small
the students propose strengthening the circular economy
establishing a decentralised energy supply and unsealing surfaces to improve the quality of the city centre
A new inner-city logistics network will be developed as the basis for urban production
The inner-city ring road will provide urban micro-logistics and enable production and housing to be linked
large roofs will be greened and pocket parks will be created in public spaces
This approach to urban production convinced the jury
“The city centre remains a place of commerce
but is transformed and strengthened by additional uses,” said the jury
The above-mentioned functions of production and trade are complemented by the centrally located residential use
images emerge that make you want to see more.”
The Johannes Göderitz Prize 2024 will be awarded
The exhibition of the works can be seen in the shop window of the Flebbe-Haus until 28 October
The competition was organised in close cooperation with the city of Braunschweig
which was represented on the jury by city planning officer Heinz-Georg Leuer and Bernd Schmidbauer
head of the city’s Urban Planning and Geoinformation Department

Innovative materials, sustainable construction methods and automated production – civil engineer Vincent Oettel has a clear vision for the future of construction. After his time as a professor in Hannover, he is now returning to Technische Universität Braunschweig to head the Department of Solid Construction at the Institute of Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection (iBMB)
In an interview with Bianca Loschinsky and Heiko Jacobs
he talks about his research on high-performance concrete
the use of bamboo as reinforcement and modular bridge systems reminiscent of Lego

One major point is the Collaborative Research Centre Transregio (TRR) 277 ‘Additive Manufacturing in Construction’ (AMC)
in whose application I was already involved
I believe that this is a huge topic: 3D concrete printing and also automated construction
you can do excellent research and I have always felt very comfortable here
I mean both the generously sized experimental laboratories of the iBMB and the testing halls of the Materialprüfanstalt (MPA) as well as the opportunities offered by the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277
TRR 277 is one of the top teams worldwide in the field of 3D printing in construction
then moved on to steel construction and only later to solid construction
I have always found it very interesting to use the building material where it can be best utilised according to its potential
it was always a challenge to push the material even further
It’s not just my daughters who ask me: What are we doing for the future
The aspect of sustainability is important to me
as is the fight against the housing shortage
Fast construction reduces costs and compensates for the shortage of skilled workers
I also find it inspiring to talk to other disciplines
You first have to learn the technical vocabulary
And I believe that a great deal can be achieved by combining mechanical and civil engineering
we are investigating new possibilities for bridge renovation in the field of sustainable construction
which have already been tested in our neighbouring countries but have not yet been investigated in Germany
but we cannot rebuild them all for reasons of cost and time
the preservation of existing structures almost always represents the most sustainable solution
That’s why we want to mill off the asphalt and apply a high-performance concrete that is the same height as the asphalt was before
So I’m not adding any dead weight of my own
but the high-performance concrete serves as a road surface and cross-section supplement that strengthens the bridge
This can be done in a very short construction time
which offers economic and ecological advantages
in a factory and deliver them to the construction site
we can manufacture the modules automatically
protected from the weather and to a very high quality
we need a lot of additional safety measures and therefore more material due to the higher inaccuracies
which we do not need if we manufacture them in a factory
we can then assemble the modules like Lego bricks or thread them like a string of pearls onto tendons and brace them
demolish a dilapidated bridge that we can no longer reinforce and replace it very quickly
we can shorten traffic detours and congestion times and save enormous amounts of CO₂ emissions
The difficulty lies in connecting these parts in a force-locked manner and designing the joints accordingly
we are primarily concerned with the automated milling of profiled joints and various joining techniques for dry joints
dry joints have the advantage that defective modules can be replaced and dismantling is much easier
TU President Angela Ittel and Professor Vincent Oettel
we consume resources and produce emissions
but we have to keep pushing them back to be as sustainable as possible
This is how we develop resource-optimised load-bearing structures
for example thin-walled concrete structures with ribs that are more reminiscent of steel construction
We save as much material as possible through targeted topology optimisation
we are trying to incorporate bamboo rods into concrete
This would also help in emerging markets where steel is usually not produced locally but has to be purchased on the world market
Bamboo is a plant that grows in many parts of the world and
can grow by an average of 20 to 30 centimetres per day
such as the swelling of the dried material when it is embedded in the concrete
the traditional topics: our students should understand the basics
how do I have to construct that – these are the basics
but also exercises in which students model and design a bridge using software
we use plausibility checks and estimates to determine whether the computer results are correct
We don’t want our students to rely too heavily on the software
but that depends very much on the modelling and doesn’t have to correspond to reality
and that’s where we have to sensitise them and also prepare them
We familiarise students with innovative building materials such as high-performance concrete and non-metallic reinforcement
How can I build in a way that optimises materials and resources
How do you actually do a life cycle assessment and how do we make it ecologically justifiable
Our students are the people who will later take the innovations into the offices and companies
we can’t go on as we have done in the past

They have published their research in a paper that they will present at the ‘USENIX Security 2025’ conference in Seattle
‘HyTrack’ could enable advertisers to track users across different apps and the web browser
read articles online and interact with advertisements
our activities are constantly being tracked
Companies and website operators collect data on users’ online behaviour through web tracking
Tracking through cookies or pixel tags helps website operators to better understand their visitors
but also to personalise advertising through movement profiles
While proponents of tracking point to customised content and an improved user experience
privacy advocates warn of the risks to privacy
head of the Institute for Application Security at TU Braunschweig
also warns of this and a new type of tracking: ‘’HyTrack’ is a major threat to data protection and user privacy
But the good news is that we seem to have discovered the technology before the tracking and advertising industry
In three large-scale studies and one qualitative study
we have not yet been able to find ‘HyTrack’ in the wild.”
The tracking method is based on a new browser feature – custom tabs
These allow special browser windows to be opened directly in an app that uses the same storage and session state as the regular smartphone browser
This allows users to remain logged in to websites
even when accessing them via different apps
What was intended as a convenience feature can
be misused for questionable tracking purposes
The method discovered by the researchers takes advantage of the fact that custom tabs share the browser’s cookie storage
This allows a tracking company to assign an identifier (ID) to the user – independently of the Google advertising ID (Google AD-ID)
which enables app developers to measure user behaviour across different media sources
The advertising ID can be reset and deleted by users
Particularly worrying: ‘’HyTrack‘ can even recover after a browser memory wipe or a reinstallation of affected apps,” says Malte Wessels
research associate at the Institute for Application Security and first author of the study
“If an app uses a special variant of custom tabs known as ‘Trusted Web Activities’
these open in full-screen mode – keeping the tracking hidden.” The researchers tested the method in ten different browsers and on six Android versions
The result: all browsers that support custom tabs are affected by ‘HyTrack’
There is at least one piece of good news: so far
there is no evidence that this technique is already being used by tracking services
the scientists warn that it would be easy for advertising networks and other data companies to implement it
They therefore recommend that browser developers quickly fix this vulnerability and advise users to install an ad blocker in their browser in the meantime to at least partially protect themselves from unwanted tracking

the term of office of the newly composed Senate at TU Braunschweig begins
The highest body of academic self-administration
which plays a decisive role in advising on and shaping the academic and structural development of the university
crucial decisions will have to be made – from implementing the Ecoversity initiative to deciding on key infrastructure measures
It is important that we join forces in these times and work constructively to shape the future of our university,” says TU President Prof
The members of the Senate take office for a two-year term ending on 31 March 2027
In its capacity as a central decision-making body
alongside the Executive Board and the University Council
the Senate is involved in the strategic orientation
as well as the equal opportunities plan and the development plan of the TU
It has a comprehensive right to information and a say vis-à-vis the presidium and comments on all matters of self-administration
the Senate will focus on a number of topics that are of great importance for the further development of the university
the implementation of the Ecoversity initiative
the realisation of construction projects and the search for solutions to the renovation backlog
The Senate meets about once a month in a session that is open to university members – as far as space permits
In order to enable as many members of TU Braunschweig as possible to participate in the meeting in hybrid form in the future
a technical solution is currently being worked on and will then be installed in the Senate Hall
The Senate also meets in a non-public part

Unesco has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technologies. As a founding member of the quantum alliance Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QVLS)
TU Braunschweig is one of the driving forces behind a rapidly growing quantum technology industry in Germany
In the month of World Quantum Day (14 April)
our picture shows one of the Braunschweig innovations that make Lower Saxony’s quantum computer possible

Sometimes quantum computers seem to be a technology of opposites. For example, when the sensitive qubits only reach peak performance at temperatures close to absolute zero. Or when huge devices are used to control the smallest parts of the universe. At TU Braunschweig, however, researchers at the Institute for CMOS Design
want to make quantum computers more compact and temperature stable
Our picture of the month shows one of their designs for the Niedersachsen ion trap quantum computer of Quantum Valley Niedersachsen (QVLS)
At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC)
the world’s most important platform for chip design
they were able to place their world’s first functional microwave trapped-ion controller in a prominent position

Particulate matter, carbon dioxide and other airborne pollutants affect our health. But how can this pollution be made visible? Merle Riecke, an environmental engineering graduate from TU Braunschweig, has found a solution: a mobile measuring device that helps cyclists find clean routes. She developed the OpenBikeSensor as part of her master’s thesis at the Institute of Transport
In her master’s thesis at the Institute of Transport
Merle Riecke further developed the OpenBikeSensor by integrating a particulate matter sensor
it looks like plain grey tube that Merle Riecke carries on the luggage rack of her bicycle
But inside is a whole range of technology: a particulate matter sensor that measures the particles in the air
two other sensors that measure temperature and carbon dioxide
a GPS module that assigns the measured values to their respective locations
who specialises in public transport and transport and infrastructure planning
built all this herself as part of her master’s thesis
Her goal: “The idea is that people can use the sensor to measure their daily journeys and see where they are most exposed.” In order to make her development accessible to as many people as possible
the TU student based her work on the OpenBikeSensor open source project
This is a sensor that you can build yourself
which is normally used to measure the overtaking distance of cars and helps to identify dangerous spots in urban traffic
Merle Riecke realised early on that her idea to extend the sensor would be met with enthusiasm when she visited the “Maker Faire” in Hanover
a trade fair for tinkerers and technology enthusiasts
I went there to find tips and tricks,” she says
So she was all the more surprised to get so much positive feedback on her project: “We didn’t have a moment’s peace
There was always someone at the stand who liked the project and had their own ideas.” For the student
this was confirmation that her project had struck a chord
And that proved to be more complicated than expected
Riecke had to familiarise herself with microcontrollers
so I had to teach myself how to do everything” she says
She would spend hours trying to figure out why something was not working
Merle Riecke designed the complex sensor herself and had to learn additional programming skills
she succeeded in developing the measuring device
“It was a lot of trial and error,” says the graduate
In the sparsely populated region of Lüchow-Dannenberg
where she lived while working on her master’s thesis
“I wanted to take measurements that would show me where it’s really dirty,” says Riecke
So she drove to Lüneburg in the middle of rush hour
“The concentration was lower than expected,” she says
She suspected that the heavy rain that day had washed the particulates out of the air
It was only when she drove past a burning fire that the readings rose significantly
she also calibrated her sensors at an official measuring station in Braunschweig
The practical test proved that the sensor works
The sensor has now been built and the thesis successfully completed
The measured air quality data could be fed into a map that colour-codes particularly polluted routes so that cyclists can avoid them
the device could help cities and communities identify air pollution hotspots and take action
Other exciting ideas for developing the sensor came from the “Maker Faire”
there was an idea for the integration of a vibration sensor for the measurement of road conditions.” Riecke hopes that people or projects will be found to develop the project further and perhaps even merge it with the OpenBikeSensor
Whether she will work on further development herself is unclear
Merle Riecke would like to work in the field of public transport
Her dream is to make cities more environmentally friendly
“We only have this one world,” she says
“And I would like to do my bit to protect it.”

It has no cables and its supporting structure can also be a battery: teams from Braunschweig
Berlin and Würzburg have been researching such a cleverly designed small satellite since 2020
The battery storage system ‘Wall#E’ was largely developed at Technische Universität Braunschweig in the Cluster of Excellence for Sustainable Aviation SE2A
while the wireless infrastructure ‘Skith’ was developed in Würzburg
A small satellite equipped with this technology was launched on 14 January 2025 and will orbit the Earth for one year
The results of the demonstration flight are relevant for further sustainable developments in aerospace
and at TU Berlin at the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
The Skith (Skip the harness) wireless satellite infrastructure was developed at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg
It eliminates the need for conventional cable connections between satellite components by enabling data transmission using robust and fault-tolerant ultra-wideband radio
complexity and integration effort of the satellite
Another advantage is that individual satellite components can be easily replaced
These two technologies will be used for the first time in the small satellite InnoCcube, which was launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket on 14 January 2025
The satellite will be tested for about a year
will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 500 to 600 kilometres
The knowledge gained from the orbital tests will feed into both terrestrial and space technologies
it is conceivable that the combination of Skith and Wall#E could enable the construction of aircraft with fewer cables and energy-storing outer walls
This would save weight and could potentially open the door to electric flight
The Wall#E and Skith technologies were the winners of DLR’s INNOspace Masters competitions in 2016 and 2017 respectively
Their development was funded by the DLR Space Agency in separate projects
with support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs
