So the unanimous opinion that was issued on June 11 upholding the law and setting the transfer scramble in motion was handed down in what had become the Breitenfeld case which prompted both Turner and Breitenfeld to seek to take advantage of the transfer law the city schools had regained provisional accreditation meaning the law no longer applied to students living in the city Breitenfeld said that her daughters had begun attending Clayton schools when Savannah was in kindergarten and Elle was in second grade She is in legal talks to settle the debt for tuition for her daughters for the portion of the 2012-13 school year when the law no longer applied to them she and her children leased an apartment at Clayton on the Park for $1,950 a month to establish residency in the district plus the mortgage on the family’s home in St Louis Hills – what Breitenfeld said totaled more than $5,000 a month – became too much and she’s in the process of completing a bankruptcy filing “We just couldn’t do it,” she said of the financial load she took Savannah and Elle out of the Clayton schools toward the end of the year and home-schooled them She is still trying to figure out where they will be learning when the new school year begins Breitenfeld also talked of the burden on her divided family while her daughters went to school in Clayton so he had to keep living there while she and her daughters moved to the apartment “being in Clayton with the kids without my husband He would come in for dinner once in a while during the week He would help with  the girls’ homework and things of that nature and it was just really hard on our family being apart.” Elle and Savannah have not experienced any adverse reaction about their family’s role in the transfer case But once details became public about the efforts by Clayton to obtain back tuition payments “then there were a couple of comments made to the children or within their hearing distance my husband and I decided we don’t want to subject them to any negativity so let’s just take them out of the school.” Has the case had any lasting effect on her daughters “It’s hard to determine how much a child is affected,” Breitenfeld said “I would say that once in a while they would make a comment that they didn’t want to go to school “It definitely affected my husband and me because we didn’t want them subjected to any negative comments or in any way be the cause of a problem as the legal and educational uncertainty surrounding the transfers continues Breitenfeld insists that the lengthy journey has been worth it for her family and for others who have been able to take advantage of the option to attend an accredited school “We knew all along that the city schools were not where we wanted our children,” she said “Once we were educated and learned what we could do to change things We paid high taxes in the city on our home We had no options for our children as far as a good education without going to a private or parochial school and paying that tuition let’s get them into a good school system where they can get the education that they deserve…. “I definitely have not stepped into anything reluctantly I have from the very beginning felt very strongly about what we are doing Jane’s children graduated and had to pay tuition through graduation day and were not able to take advantage of the things she fought for This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page passed away after a short illness on Sunday 2024 at Rose Senior Living where she resided for over two years.  to Karl Hermann Breitenfeld and Dora Emma Frenzl Breitenfeld They together raised her and her four brothers; left femur broken at the ball of the hip; four compound fractures in his right leg; both feet broken; left hip socket shattered His vehicle was mangled; it took EMTs nearly an hour to extract him today with the help of a cane he can walk — something his doctors told him he would never do But that night changed Breitenfeld’s life irrevocably. On his website he makes a somewhat dark joke about losing his “man card,” for example the ability to be a breadwinner for his wife and two stepsons Besides the limp and the lingering physical pain he also deals with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety But he’s also picked up a determination to tell his story and to serve as an advocate for changes to Wisconsin’s drunken driving laws and to try to reach out to those who need to hear about the real risks of driving drunk from someone who has borne the burden of another man’s decision to drink and drive has written a book about his experience: “The Dangers of Drinking and Driving: The Jason Breitenfeld Story,” that he will self-publish in coming months He works with Northwoods Restorative Justice a Woodruff-based nonprofit whose stated mission is to “acknowledge the impact of crime upon victims hold offenders responsible for their actions On Tuesday, Breitenfeld will speak in Wausau about his experience as part of a day-long summit on substance abuse and impaired driving at Northcentral Technical College that will be broadcast online He said his priority is "sharing my story and getting it out there whether that's speaking to offenders or groups of high school kids it’s all about preventing even one family or individual (from having) to endure what my family has gone through." has had: He is not the only person whose life was changed that night for the worse The man who swerved into Breitenfeld’s 2000 Chevy Venture that night outside of St a 38-year-old Bowler man with three previous drunken driving convictions already on his record He would plead no-contest to a fourth OWI in the crash He was sentenced to three years in prison and three years on probation "One of the things that really struck me: He had young kids," Breitenfeld said but he has young kids who have lost their father for at least three years when they hauled him off (after the sentencing) and his kids were crying." Doxtator at the sentencing said he had quit drinking that he understood the consequences of drinking and driving That's what Breitenfeld hopes others can take from his story "but I do believe there’s some hope out there." all Accounting Today is a leading provider of online business news for the accounting community Doctoral students at Boston University could be forced to take a leave of absence and lose their health insurance if they do not comply with new guidelines requiring them to return to campus in the fall mandate that “continuing students with teaching service appointments for fall 2020 who are unable to return to Boston University by September 1 should be expected to take a leave of absence,” according to a memo released last week by University Provost Jean Morrison and Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs Daniel Kleinman at the discretion of the program and school/college the student may attend classes remotely without stipend support.” PhD student Lena Brucia Breitenfeld now has to make a decision: come to campus in-person and continue work as a teaching fellow “This policy is threatening to leverage people's insurance coverage against them and forcing them to choose between their safety and their health care coverage,” she said really dangerous to make people choose between life saving health care and their safety.” this could mean a choice between continuing to have access to life-affirming hormones and other medical needs or giving up health insurance and exposing herself to the public during a pandemic she has until August 1 to let her program know if she will be returning which she said could affect her housing situation too “A couple of my possible living situations are to live with a friend of mine who is immunocompromised one of whom is a senior citizen,” Breitenfeld said “I don't know if it's going to be safe at all for me to go in and thus expose members of my family and my friends.” “Many of the service responsibilities of PhD students particularly those with teaching service appointments cannot be readily done remotely,” the post reads “BU cannot provide stipends to students who are unable to complete their service responsibilities.” a spokesperson for the university said there are some exceptions: namely if a student is able to enroll in courses remotely the university will continue to cover their health insurance but not their salary “BU cannot pay PhD students who are unable to do their 'service;' generally PhD students must be in the Boston area and able to be on campus in order to complete their service responsibilities,” the spokesperson said we expect PhD students to be on campus to receive stipends… For a PhD student who cannot return to campus in the fall and who believes they can effectively do service work off campus they may contact their program director of director of graduate studies to discuss what options are available.” a PhD student in the university’s Classics department and has applied for a “workplace readjustment” in the hopes that she will be able to continue her work remotely as an exception to the new rule “If I'm not granted it and I have to go into campus I would probably have to do that,” she said “in order to keep myself insured and have the ability to buy insulin and other medical supplies I need.” The policy also means international students who are unable to travel to campus by September will also forgo their insurance and salaries tax laws and payroll surcharges in both the United States and within a student’s home country make it financially and operationally infeasible to provide stipend support to international PhD students who are not able to come to the U.S.,” the school’s website reads “There are additional regulatory complexities with respect to paying new international students who are unable to come to the U.S a doctoral student in Education and Human Development said he’s particularly concerned about the impact this policy will have on Black and Indigenous people of color who have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 “This policy is forcing these students to choose between being able to financially survive and have medical insurance during a global pandemic and protecting their physical well-being against a disease that disproportionately affects these underserved communities," he said “This is not ethical to force us to make that choice,” Chandler-Campbell continued “BU talks a great deal about supporting us — we literally want them to put their money where their mouth is.” said she finds the communication around the policy to be vague and confusing “They haven’t answered questions about how proper ventilation in classrooms will be provided are they just expecting us to trade off duties I don't relish the idea of having to go back to a classroom especially when the administration isn't providing personal protective equipment to the students or to the teaching staff.” Students and teachers will be expected to wear face coverings while on campus and required to provide their own personal protective equipment “They've specifically refused to provide PhD students who are working as staff with any type of PPE,” he said “And what am I going to do if a student forgets to or refuses to wear a mask?” not just for the PhD students returning to campus but for the larger community surrounding the school staff and students at Boston University at risk it's also putting the general community of Boston at risk because the university is asking us to go out into the world,” she said “This isn't just a concern for people in the Boston University community It's it's a concern of everybody that lives nearby.” CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated that the policy Breitenfeld, who has two children in Clayton schools, is the lone plaintiff in Turner vs. School District of Clayton. She's shown in St. Louis County Circuit Court as the case was argued on March 5, 2012. Breitenfeld has two children in Clayton Schools. Photo by Robert Cohen, rcohen@post-dispatch.com Louis mother whose lawsuit triggered the mass exodus of children from two failing districts is now fighting a different court battle that could draw St Louis Public Schools into the school transfer saga In June, Gina Breitenfeld prevailed in a landmark Missouri Supreme Court case that affirmed the right of children like hers to attend schools in higher-performing districts at no cost to their parents more than 2,000 students in the unaccredited school districts of Normandy and Riverview Gardens have transferred Now Breitenfeld and her attorney argue the law should also apply to students in provisionally accredited school districts such as St “It’s something the Supreme Court should consider,” said her attorney Breitenfeld’s dispute focuses on unpaid tuition payments for her two children Louis but attended Clayton schools for four years Clayton officials are trying to collect about $102,000 in Breitenfeld’s unpaid tuition from the St Louis district for three of the years when city schools were unaccredited They’re also trying to collect $24,000 in tuition from Breitenfeld herself for part of 2012-13 Louis schools’ accreditation status was bumped up to provisional Louis Public Schools are getting out their checkbooks their attorneys are scheduled to fight Clayton’s collection attempts before St Louis County Judge David Lee Vincent III on May 27 Both are raising questions related to the law such as how receiving districts calculate tuition and whether “provisional accreditation” is the legal equivalent of “accredited” in the state’s school rating system Attorneys for city schools accuse the Clayton district of charging “inflated amounts of tuition far above the amounts it contracted to receive from Gina Breitenfeld.” They also argue the St Louis district is not responsible for tuition because the Breitenfeld children did not enroll in Clayton schools under the transfer statute Kistner argues that she shouldn’t be billed for any tuition because city schools are not fully accredited — and the law doesn’t implicitly give relief to districts with provisional accreditation status The law states that any district that “does not maintain an accredited school” must pay the tuition and transportation costs of resident children who wish to transfer a footnote says the school transfer law became inapplicable to St Louis Public Schools the date it gained provisional accreditation Clayton officials say this reference couldn’t be more clear “I’m not sure what higher authority of state law you can get than the Missouri Supreme Court,” said Chris Tennill The dispute over unpaid tuition is a continuation of the six-year court fight that began as Turner vs After the case went to the Supreme Court twice the high court sent one part of it back to St Louis County Circuit Court — the part to determine what St Louis Public Schools would be billed for back tuition payments for the two Breitenfeld children Tennill indicated district officials gave no consideration to walking away from the unpaid bills “We’ve always held all along we would come back and clean up the tuition issues with St Louis Public Schools and the clients that were left in the case,” he said Email notifications are only sent once a day The Missouri Board of Education votes to extend the panel But data suggest families in districts like Normandy who have opted for transfers likely have more resources than those who did not One has to fight like mad to keep ridiculously ill-conceived practices and policies from penetrating classrooms Regarding “Battle over school choice looms over Legislature” (April 28): District accuses receiving districts of charging excessive tuition and the Legislature Federal Eagle is an annual exercise that builds partnerships and promotes friendships between the German army's airborne forces and Fort Bragg the airborne exercise is an opportunity for local paratroopers to earn coveted foreign jump wings But it's also helping the 82nd Airborne Division achieve its goal of bridging the gaps between friendly paratroopers around the globe Federal Eagle is one of more than 30 international exercises visits or exchanges conducted in the past 12 months according to a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne including the weeks-long training with British forces earlier this year the foreign engagements have involved at least seven allies They are building toward a huge airborne operation to be led by Fort Bragg forces in Germany later this year approximately 1,200 paratroopers got a taste of Germany over the course of the two-day exercise Federal Eagle would take place in German C-160s The 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade ferried dozens of soldiers over the drop zone letting the paratroopers loose one at a time with the familiar scene of canopies in the sky following German jumpmasters shouted commands that would have been familiar were it not for the language "The result is the same," Breitenfeld said you jump out and you try to keep your legs together." Paratroopers said even the German jumpmaster hand signals were a little different "We're getting exposed to the way they conduct business in the air," said 2nd Lt a paratrooper with the 82nd's 1st Brigade Combat Team That could come in handy should the two nation's paratroopers need to work together you may be less comfortable now," Jenson said it's understanding the capability of our allies and them understanding our capabilities." "It's important for us to exchange our procedures and learn from each other." they pinned the German jump wings to the chests of the paratroopers While not all of the paratroopers jumping will attend the Swift Response exercise later this year Breitenfeld said he looked forward to seeing them all the same The 82nd Airborne Division is popular in Germany His paratroopers look up to the All Americans and respect their expertise Swift Response will involve Fort Bragg's 18th Airborne Corps and the Europe-based 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team At least seven nations will participate in the exercise which will involve parachuting into southern Germany with a large international force Perhaps to help those attending that future training Breitenfeld ended each short ceremony with a language lesson of sorts He taught the paratroopers the German version of the familiar "Airborne!" response that is ubiquitous among American paratroopers: "Glück ab!" details thermal waters (TW) are all-natural mineral waters that emerge inside a thermal resort and have therapeutic applications Their beneficial effect has been empirically recognized for centuries being indicated for symptom alleviation and/or treatment of several diseases an anti-inflammatory effect has been attributed to many different Portuguese TW but there is no scientific validation supporting this empiric knowledge we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of 14 TW pertaining to thermal centers located in the Central Region of Portugal and grouped according to their ionic profile Mouse macrophage cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were exposed to culture medium prepared in TW inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression levels and the scavenging capacity of TW 11 out of 14 TW reduced NO production and/or iNOS expression The sulphated/calcic TW did not show any effect on at least one of the inflammatory parameters evaluated Two sulphurous/bicarbonate/sodic TW and the sulphurous/chlorinated/sodic TW promoted an increase in NO production and/or iNOS expression the anti-inflammatory properties of Portuguese TW supporting their therapeutic use in the treatment of inflammation-related diseases and promoting their putative application in cosmetic products and medical devices described in detail in Supplementary data online the respective main chemical composition and general therapeutic indications These diseases are associated with an overproduction and release of proinflammatory mediators by macrophages during inflammation biological scientific data supporting the health benefits of Portuguese TW use remain insufficient the present study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of these waters in vitro we analyzed key inflammatory parameters in a mouse macrophage cell line stimulated with LPS NO production and expression levels of iNOS and the scavenging capacity of TW in removing NO Our work showed that among the 14 TW used in this study and five exhibited scavenging activity in LPS-exposed macrophages supporting the anti-inflammatory properties of Portuguese TW Thermal waters effect on macrophages metabolic state Cells were plated and exposed to Ctrl medium or SBS (a) BMF (e) and SC (f) thermal waters (TW) for 24 h Alamar blue assay was further performed to assess cell metabolism supplementary data 2—“Supplementary blots” 300 µM) was added to Ctrl medium or medium prepared with SBS (a) Data correspond to the means ± SEM of at least three independent experiments and are represented as % of Ctrl medium with SNAP (Ctrl) The present study was aimed at conferring scientific validation to the empirically recognized anti-inflammatory effects of Portuguese TW the anti-inflammatory properties of TW from 14 Thermal Centers located in the Central Region of Portugal were validated iNOS expression levels and the NO scavenging capacity of TW were investigated in an in vitro model of inflammation consisting of a mouse macrophage cell line stimulated with the Toll-like receptor 4 agonist 11 promoted a reduction in NO production and/or iNOS expression and/or exhibited NO scavenging activity in macrophages exposed to LPS supporting their anti-inflammatory properties supporting the use of this TW in regenerative skin processes This also could explain the down-regulation of iNOS in cells exposed to SBS TW 1 the results suggest that these TW hold strong anti-inflammatory properties and should be indicated for the treatment of inflammatory diseases It is important to emphasize that the present study focused on relevant but not all inflammation-related mediators and molecular events hence not disclosing the existence of others being affected by TW exposure The results herein presented intended to scientifically justify the anti-inflammatory effect attributable to Portuguese TW without scrutinize the associated mechanisms a deeper investigation about the molecular and cellular pathways associated to TW anti-inflammatory properties using other cell lines and more physiologic cellular models (e.g based on a methodology specifically designed to the study of a particular disease one cannot exclude other factors contributing to TW effects our results greatly contributed to the scientific validation of the anti-inflammatory properties of technician Jared Rieger works on fixing a radiator hose leak on a 2000 refuse truck at the city vehicle maintenance building on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018. Fourteen trucks filled the repair bays Thursday, a number that varies as technicians staff the facility six days a week to keep the aging vehicles running. Photo by Robert Cohen, rcohen@post-dispatch.com LOUIS — The city trash commissioner on Wednesday told aldermen the budget they are considering won’t pay for enough truck drivers to pick up all the trash Refuse Commissioner Randy Breitenfeld said in budget hearings that next year’s spending plan includes nine fewer trash truck drivers than the city needs “I would not be able to cover all my routes,” Breitenfeld said The statement set off alarms among aldermen. Trash pickup is one of the city’s bread-and-butter functions, and aldermen have been getting an earful from constituents in the last few years as a short-staffed refuse department has struggled to maintain consistent service “That is a pretty big omission,” said Spencer who as a member of the city's Estimate Board gave the city's entire $1.3 billion budget initial approval last month said in an interview that the part Breitenfeld objects to should probably change “We should be aspiring to have the workforce to pick up every single route every single day,” she said said in an emailed statement that it is important to her that the refuse department has sufficient staff and that she will support budget requests for sufficient staff who also gave initial approval to the budget said he talked to Streets Department Director Betherny Williams on Wednesday assured him that the new budget would have enough drivers to cover all of the routes even if it would be a little tight: The division will have to continue picking up seven days per week instead of the traditional four Breitenfeld described things differently in Wednesday’s committee hearing has been working at full-tilt since the pandemic when staffing got squeezed by a hiring freeze and people leaving for better-paying jobs in the private sector seven-day schedule since at least the summer of 2022 when they restarted recycling pickup and the system collapsed Breitenfeld acknowledged that vacancies remain — there are 52 positions filled out of 66 budgeted for the current year — and said that’s probably why some of the positions were cut The city is trying to be conservative heading into the next fiscal year: Officials are concerned about losing $26 million in income taxes amid challenges from the state and various lawsuits The city doesn’t pay as much as private trash haulers Some applicants can’t pass federally mandated drug tests or don’t show up to interviews But he said he had hoped this would be the year he got the division back to some semblance of normalcy The city has raised salaries for its trash truck drivers and some of those who left have started coming back He said he’d need more than just the 57 positions in the proposed budget for next year and an average of 10 people out each day for medical leave “I have to have some fluff in there,” he said Aldermen will be reviewing the budgets of all city departments over the next few weeks and they can propose additions to the Estimate Board The budget must be finally approved by June 30 Louis through the Post-Dispatch photographers' lenses The mayor announced an end to limits on hiring in city government citing the state Legislature’s inaction on bills that would have cut into c… heavy workloads and poor treatment from management Only about a third of what’s put into recycling bins has actually been processed in recent years The Estimate Board will meet virtually at 2 p.m Louis mayors have been defending the 1% earnings tax since its inception in the 1950s WI -- Spooner Health made history with hospitals around the country by receiving its first supply of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine It was delivered for distribution to frontline healthcare workers on December 17 The first recipients of the vaccine include Mark Van Etten “The arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine is a great first step in the timeline of recovering from this pandemic and I could not be more thrilled that the first supply that we received covers all of our frontline workers here at Spooner Health It is only a matter of time before our friends family and community members are also receiving the vaccine and hope beyond this pandemic is achieved.” The impact of COVID-19 for Washburn County and beyond has been huge Healthcare workers faced unknown challenges daily as numbers continued to rise alarmingly high in Washburn County these challenges will not immediately go away with the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine “We must remain vigilant as a community with continued support of public health policies which include wearing masks avoiding large gatherings and staying home when ill This is an important milestone and together with the arrival of the vaccine there is even greater confidence that this pandemic will end and as a community For more information on the COVID-19 vaccine, please visit www.SpoonerHealth.com/COVID19 Director of Pharmacy;
