BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) commenced construction of its first production facility for green hydrogen and fuel cell components in Budenheim
The products produced at this site will include newly developed low-iridium-loaded catalyst coated membranes (CCMs)
a key functional part for proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis
This will complement the Celtec® membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for high-temperature fuel cells
which will also be produced at the facility
MEAs are critical components in fuel cells that enable hydrogen together with oxygen from the air to be converted efficiently into electricity
The ECMS hydrogen business operates globally
As the renewable energy ecosystem develops rapidly
the production of green hydrogen from water electrolysis will become a crucial pillar in supporting the global energy transition
The new facility will enable the commercial launch of newly developed CCMs for PEM electrolyzers with multi-gigawatt capacity to serve the global market
This investment allows ECMS to expand its capabilities in precious metals
end-to-end solution provider across a range of product lines in the green hydrogen space
“This new site in Budenheim fulfils a key part of our global strategy for hydrogen,” said Tim Ingle
Senior Vice President of Precious Metal Services and Recycling for ECMS
“As a global leader in precious metals services and catalyst recycling
the investment solidifies our support for the growing hydrogen economy with circular solutions that improve performance and reduce costs for PEM electrolyzers and fuel cells.”
“Our new products have progressed successfully from R&D into pilot scale
Production in Budenheim signifies a major milestone for the market introduction of these products and positions us in a strong place to leverage this sizeable business opportunity,” said Saeed Alerasool
Senior Vice President R&D and Application for ECMS
The opening of the Budenheim site is planned for the summer of 2025
is situated in the centre of Europe within the Rhein-Main metropolitan area
The project is being developed with Trigona Fuel Cell Components GmbH and Grundstücksverwaltung Rheinufer GmbH & Co
The Summer 2024 issue of Energy Global starts with a guest comment from Terrawatt on the streamlining of the permitting process in Italy
before moving on to a regional report from Frost & Sullivan on the energy landscape in Asia Pacific
This issue looks at key topics such as wind installation vessels

Morocco’s phosphates and fertilizer producer
partnered with German and Belgian partners
to build a new plant for the production of purified phosphoric acid
This will be achieved through their subsidiary Euro Maroc Phosphor (EMAPHOS) in a project that will help the OCP consolidate its global leadership in the production of Purified Wet Process phosphoric acid
The plant will be based in Jorf Lasfar platform benefiting from major synergies and economies of scale thanks to its direct access to the infrastructures
shared services and raw materials made available to it by OCP within this platform
The plant seeks to double the annual production capacity of EMAPHOS from 140,000 total phosphorus (TP) 205 per year to 280,000 TP 205 per year in the 4th quarter of 2022
OCP Group said the doubling of capacity will “also make part of the production available to the OCP for recovery in the future in the form of niche products based on purified acid
thus making it possible to strengthen the status of the Group of global producers of specialty phosphate products.”
this new plant will rely on and capitalize on the expertise and knowhow developed over more than two decades by the technical staff of EMAPHOS
The companies completed the basic engineering studies in March 2020
The project is under a detailed studies phase
The start of construction works is scheduled for the first quarter of 2021

The use of a Liebherr HS 895 HD crawler crane allowed the demolition of the Budenheim glass factory to be carried out on time and to budget
SAT Industrie-Abbruch GmbH used a Liebherr HS 895 HD crawler crane equipped with a wrecking ball during the demolition of a chimney and batch tower at the Budenheim glass factory of behalf of Grunstueckverwaltung Rheinufer Budenheim GmbH
the factory had a total volume of 400,000 m3 (523,000 yd3)
with the chimney standing 80 m (263 ft) high while the batch tower stood at a height of 60 m (197 ft)
The site was in close proximity to a nearby chemical supply depot
which required that the demolition be carried out with minimal vibration and dust
The crane was equipped with a demolition package and rigged with an 88 m (289 ft) main boom and 3.5 tonne drop weight
with dust from the demolition suppressed using vertical water curtains 30 m (98 ft) in height
a man basket was first lowered by the crane into the chimney
from which the inner lining and rock wool insulation were removed
the chimney was then demolished in a single day
during which operation care had to be exercised to avoid a nearby overhead power line
Morocco’s phosphates & fertilizers company OCP and its German and Belgian partners
are building in Jorf Lasfar a new plant to produce purified phosphoric acid
through their subsidiary Euro Maroc Phosphore (Emaphos)
This new plant will double Emaphos’ annual production capacity
going up from 140,000 T P2 O5 per annum to 280,000 T P2O5/year from the 4th quarter of 2022
said on Tuesday the state-owned OCP group in a press release
Thanks to its location in Jorf Lasfar platform
this project will benefit from several advantages
including a direct access to major infrastructures
This project is part of the strategy of the OCP and its partners to enhance their global leadership in the production of Purified Wet Process phosphoric acid
a technology recognized as BAT (Best Available Technique) in terms of CO2 emissions
The new plant will enable the Moroccan phosphates group and its partners to respond to the developments in the world market for purified phosphoric acid intended for specialized uses
This capacity doubling will enable the OCP Group to use a part of the production in niche products based on purified acid
strengthening the Group’s status as a global producer of specialty phosphate products
OCP provides a wide range of well-adapted fertilizer products to enhance soil
OCP works in a close partnership with more than 160 customers over the world
