MOORHEAD — Bucky Burgau has been a staple in and around ballparks in Moorhead for decades Burgau received another memento for his years of service to the baseball community Burgau was inducted into the Minnesota American Legion Hall of Fame after an extensive coaching career with the Moorhead Blues Burgau was hired as the Blues head coach in 1973 and had an 883-396 record in his 27 years with the team “It’s a really special moment for me,” Burgau said Burgau led the Blues to their lone American Legion Baseball World Series appearance in 1988 While leading the 1988 team was certainly memorable Burgau said his favorite moments coaching Moorhead came from connecting with those he was surrounded by “Every team that came through here that I was lucky to be a part of has special meaning to me,” Burgau said “because of the friendships not only with the player American Legion baseball holds a special place in Burgau’s heart members of the Moorhead American Legion taught him “a lot about the flag and what it means.” The Code of Sportsmanship recited before Legion games and tournaments is an integral part of instilling the values of the American Legion in the players “Whenever (players) listen to those words,” Burgau said Burgau was hired as an equipment manager and assistant coach with the Concordia Cobbers baseball team in 1977 He would later become the Cobbers' head coach in 1979 Burgau amassed a 711-619-6 record before stepping down from the role in 2014 He continues to serve the team as an assistant coach Burgau also served as an assistant coach for Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association from 1999 to 2016 Blues head coach Jack Naugle was one of the players Burgau coached with the Cobbers After Concordia's 2019-2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic Naugle wasn’t sure what his summer plans were going to look like Burgau contacted Naugle about coaching the 14U team — now Blues seniors — that summer Naugle joined the Blues as an assistant under former head coach Bryant Bergeson and eventually assumed the role himself “(I) wouldn’t be here without Bucky,” Naugle said Burgau helps run the baseball field named after him at Concordia Burgau said he gets to meet the young players and the families that make up Moorhead’s youth baseball programs while at the field Moorhead’s 14U and 15U teams earned trips to the Babe Ruth World Series last season “I’ve seen some wonderful teams and players on the youth fields this summer,” Burgau said “There’s a wonderful future for Moorhead baseball.” including wife Penny and daughters Rachel and Jennifer has been just as impactful on his career as himself “Penny has always said ‘the baseball field is our lake home,’ ” Burgau said “Every time I put (the Blues) uniform on or the Cobbers uniform on and walk out there and be a part of this game is a special time for me.” Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into unrelenting blue sky We’ve just arrived in Praia da Luz, a small beach town and surf spot in the western Algarve where our family of four are spending February half-term with friends Locals are dressed in long trousers and light coats while we have giddily stripped to our T-shirts knowing that at home it will be months before we feel warmth like this Impressed by the quality and choice of available accommodation when we booked at the last minute we have rented a villa a 10-minute walk from the beach It sleeps all nine of us (four adults and five kids) is set in large grounds with an outdoor pool tennis court and a small orange grove and cost £200 a night race off to pick fresh oranges for breakfast and return with juices dripping down their chins to declare them the “best oranges we’ve ever tasted” and offers board hire and coaching for all levels so we are vigilant as we look for rips and currents but from Easter lifeguards will be on patrol The youngest of the children play on the shoreline and the rest of us take turns surfing in clean while the more experienced surfers head to the eastern end of the bay to surf the reef After a long morning in the water, we are ready for lunch and choose Lazuli a beachfront restaurant with outdoor seating We order cheese and ham toasties for the children and a jug of fresh white sangria for the adults The hike from Luz to Lagos hugs the cliff top offering sweeping views over wild beaches below We only see two other walkersThe following day My son and I decide to hike along the cliff top to Lagos We begin our walk along the cobbled beach front of Luz then cut up steeply along a red dirt trail towards the Rocha Negra headland we are rewarded with a postcard view of Luz with its cluster of white houses gathered by the coast The two-hour hike hugs the cliff top all the way into the city of Lagos offering sweeping views over the wild beaches below eager to use the slivers of Portuguese we’ve been practising A view from the cliff walk from Luz to Lagos Photograph: Lucy ClarkeWhen we reach Lagos but in February there is only a gentle bustle cobbled lanes and an array of attractive shops I could happily while away an hour or two but I’d promised that he could choose our dinner spot in Lagos, and he opts for an Italian eatery, Pepperino where the chef skilfully spins pizza bases and slots them into the wood-fired oven and tuck into the local delicacy – pastel de nata custard tarts The benefits of visiting the Algarve in low season include the lack of crowds affordable prices and the ease of getting a table anywhere you choose The downside is that the evenings are longer and cooler so most nights we choose to cook at our villa The sleepy fishing village of Burgau Photograph: Jurgen Wackenhut/AlamyWe are gifted sunshine and smooth peeling waves for our final days We make camp on Praia da Luz and take it in turns to surf and make ice-cream runs to the kiosk on the beachfront A local tells us that in summer this beach is packed with umbrellas and crowds and we feel grateful to be here out of season our two families are the last to leave the beach and the children run barefoot in and out of the waves it is a joy to visit Portugal when the landscape is verdant and fresh and the hillsides flecked with bright yellow wildflowers who love the outdoors and prefer to avoid crowds Portugal is a brilliant off-season destination for discovering quiet beaches Lucy Clarke is the bestselling author of nine novels small groups of strangers who otherwise would never have met When I heard the knock on my bedroom door, I was in my 50-shades-of-purple room at Casa Grande in Burgau Portugal – a quirky bed-and-breakfast run by the quirkier matriarch who expatriated from England 40 years prior gazing out of the wood-panelled window at the bougainvillea drooping overhead Burgau sits on the southern tip of the country the second-to-last southernmost town in the sparsely populated Algarve region The village has a permanent population of about 450 that barely doubles with tourists in the summer months sea-washed buildings smooshed together on narrow cobbled streets with a handful of bars and restaurants • The kind people Europe forgot • A village that needs approval to enter • Where afternoon tea really came from Long before Sally found herself the unwitting ‘Queen of Casa Grande’ she was a burgeoning young actress in 1950s London She worked as a directors’ assistant at the famous London film production centre Pinewood Studios in between acting gigs and brought scripts and coffee to the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Charlton Heston she married – as many young women of that time did and the two left London in a whirlwind romance then bought a rusty Land Rover to travel on a cargo ship full of goats to Libya took the ferry to Spain and journeyed up through France eventually returning to England where John worked in organising conventions he got a job offer to do the same in Chicago and the two settled in the Midwest for five years Sally followed as the dutiful wife and wasn’t sure if her acting could continue but it turned out that being a British actress in the US made her a hot commodity the Vincents were feeling the pull back to Europe “Portugal was one of the least developed countries in Europe at the time,” 74-year-old Sally explained to me over tea and biscuits in her formal sitting room decorated with Victorian wallpaper and furniture to match “We felt like rich Americans and went in search of a castle.” They drove around for a year in a converted campervan landing in Burgau and spending all their savings on their ‘castle’ – a rundown mansion no electricity and we spent a year fixing it up,” she said After a hefty renovation and camping inside the 1912 house began to resemble its former self the Vincents settled into their Casa Grande and began renting it out as a B&B Sally also ran a restaurant out of its converted adega (an old wine storehouse) I came to know about Sally through her eldest son; we sat next to each other on a short flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles I struck up a conversation with my seatmate After the normal Q&A session began to wane and more pointed questions began to fall out of my curious mouth he mentioned growing up in southern Portugal I was so intrigued by the five-minute version of his upbringing that I asked if he’d put me in touch with his mother I already had plans to be in the United Kingdom for three months over the following summer as I sat moping in my window seat because of some solo-travel loneliness Sally took me and two other guest couples – one from Berlin and the other from the Netherlands – to hear fado the traditional music and dinner experience that Portugal is famous for who often plays tour guide with her guests despite not being paid extra for it kept the conversation going when language barriers presented themselves Her laugh was raucous and her curly silver hair looked like a halo in the dim restaurant light It was hard not to believe Sally when she was speaking no matter how outrageous the tale; her expert storytelling slid easily in between sets of soulful fado and sizzling Portuguese meat and seafood dishes She told us that a decade after their move to Burgau He had been going back and forth to the US for work and “created another life with someone else,” as Sally said pointedly no financial assistance whatsoever and no goodbye to the children the children had many friends and a good community here,” said Sally who’s been the manor's matriarch ever since “So they didn’t know the agony and the struggle of it – running a restaurant running the guesthouse and bringing up four children.” Casa Grande holds a maximum of 16 guests at a time and it’s generally full between May and September every year Sally holds court around the 150-year-old dining-room table spattered with un-matching teacup sets and fresh fruits meats and cheeses set out by her housekeeper who’s been working for Sally for more than 25 years it may as well be since you'll get a half-joking finger wag and a shake of the head if you're not in attendance And I should know; Sally – who’s got seven granddaughters ranging from four months to 29 years one of whom she said I reminded her of – gleefully tsk-tsked me the morning after the night of fado my loneliness had led me to one of the three bars in town Sally encouraged her guests to socialise – to party I ordered my new favourite drink vinho verde (Portuguese white sparkling wine) as two young British men sat to my left and slapped down cards of a game I didn’t know and then let me tag along on their three-bar bar-crawl our one night grew into a solid holiday dalliance (and more than a year later we’re in love happy partners on a new adventure living together in London) Over that morning’s breakfast – where my hangover throbbed and my loneliness subsided – she regaled her guests with Casa Grande's ghost stories This is a time-honoured tradition where she delights in telling of her A-list patrons summered there for 20 years during her annual two weeks off from royal duty The billionaire hotelier Vikram Oberoi spent a month there with his family a few years back and never let on who he was or what he did; Sally suggested he come work for her because of his handy skills around the house Billy Idol and his family summered there a couple of years ago and his 86-year-old mother continues to visit She’s been teaching Sally how to use Facebook Sally has no intention of stopping work at Casa Grande anytime soon but does admit that she’d like more help to run the business and perhaps open the restaurant again she brings together small groups of strangers who otherwise would never have met much less shared stories of babies to come old crushes to get over and other tales of loss and love – and new love as it was with me – that flow easily around the breakfast table here “I went to a concert in Nottingham [about 10 years after John left us],” Sally told me as conversation wound down in the living room “It was The Irish Tenors and they sang songs that he used to play and sing It brought back all these amazing memories of the good times we'd had not long after the concert Sally wrote to John and thanked him for the adventures and for their children It’s those magic moments that make the harder times worth it“Apparently he cried,” Sally said but I'm so glad that we made up and that I realised how wonderful our lives were and that [he brought us] to a brilliant place to bring up the children then it would not have been as it was [and we] did really well.” As Sally told me over FaceTime when we reconnected for this story from my flat in London with my partner it’s those magic moments that make the harder times worth it Join over three million BBC Travel fans by liking us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter and Instagram If URBANK – The Alexandria Black Sox amateur baseball team found itself in a jam in the bottom of the ninth on the road against the Urbank-Parkers Prairie Bombers on Saturday The Black Sox held a slim 5-4 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Alexandria player-manager Brady Burgau delivered forced the Bombers to hit a groundball to third baseman Tanner Gross to seal a 5-4 win at Wendelin Koep Sr "I pitched a good game and mixed things up," Burgau said but I don't think they knew what was coming the Bombers led 2-0 thanks to a 2-out RBI single by Levi Arnold in the bottom of the second inning and a 2-out RBI double by Austen Hadley in the bottom of the fifth inning The Black Sox turned the game's tide in the top of the sixth inning The Black Sox got on the board by drawing a bases-loaded walk The Black Sox took a 3-2 lead with an Alex Jinkins 2-RBI double "We've been hitting the ball well all year so it was just a matter of time before we kind of broke it open," Burgau said "Alex had a nice hit that busted it open for us." Jinkins' 2-RBI double was followed by Waylon Muenzhuber's 2-RBI double The Bombers fought back a bit in the bottom of the sixth inning Dylan Debilzen hit a 2-out RBI single that was followed by a RBI single by Johnson "We had to keep our foot on the gas," Urbank-Parkers Prairie player-manager Hunter Arnold said "I appreciate that our guys kept pushing." But this was all that Alexandria allowed for the remainder of the game as it earned a 5-4 win over an Urbank-Parkers Prairie team that made it to the Minnesota Baseball Association Class C State Tournament just two seasons ago "Everyone knows the Bombers are a good hitting team," Burgau said I was happy to hold them to not ripping the ball off me." Steady rainfall came down for the game's first five innings "I think we played well with the weather being what it was," Hunter Arnold said but it made plays tough for the guys in the field The Black Sox's regular season is beginning to wind down "We're playing good as a team right now," Burgau said and we know that we can't just rely on one guy." Urbank-Parkers Prairie is in the midst of welcoming new players Debilzen "It's a nice morale boost for us," Hunter Arnold said "It's nice having some newcomers that are hungry remembers Nick for more than those accolades He always put everybody in front of himself.” “An absolute legend,” said Cobbers head football coach Terry Horan the head baseball coach at Concordia for 36 years who started at the school in 1977 knew Nick since the mid-1970s and both were colleagues for decades at Concordia Nick was part of the Cobbers athletic department as a player He was a faculty member at Concordia for more than 40 years and helped coach football Horan said he knew Nick for nearly 40 years Nick was Horan’s position coach when Horan was a receiver for the Cobbers in the 1980s When Horan got the football job at Concordia in 2001 Nick was on his coaching staff as the offensive coordinator “I’m not where I’m at today without him,” Horan said was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2006 He also played basketball and baseball for the Cobbers Nick is also a member of the Hall of Fame at Princeton (Minn.) High School “It was so sad to see him go down this road and it was a road that my mom went down … He was amazing to me and he’ll be dearly missed.” Horan remembers telling Nick he was going to be a Concordia coach one day after Horan finished his football playing career with Cobbers in the fall of 1988 I’m going to come back and get your job someday,” Horan said Horan remembers Nick repeating that story during media interviews after Horan was named the football program’s head coach ahead of the 2001 season “He did say he was going to come back and get my job when he was leaving here,” Horan said “Now he’s my boss and I don’t know how to take that Nick was also a longtime high school official for basketball and football Burgau said he officiated games with Nick for more than 20 years “They knew they were going to get a really good job.” Burgau said Nick’s compassion was always evident “If you crossed Bobby’s path in any way shape or form … and you ended up in the hospital for some reason Bobby was one of the first ones there to visit,” Burgau said Burgau added Nick was also there for weddings funerals and other major life events for the many people who considered him a friend “We can all learn from that and I think our students learned from that,” Burgau said “I made more of a special attempt to go to weddings Horan said he's thankful he had a chance to visit Nick on Monday to say his final goodbyes to a good friend and also be there for the Nick family “Our Concordia family is hurting right now but he left his mark and we know he’s in a better place,” Horan said 16 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead with a visitation one hour before MOORHEAD — Bucky Burgau Field is the first part of Concordia College visible to those driving north on Eighth Street to campus The baseball diamond is set to get an $850,000 facelift with construction slated to start in August according to Concordia athletic director Rachel Bergeson the baseball field is the first thing they see,” Bergeson said “To have that facility look more collegiate was really important to us.” and new fencing and backstop between the dugouts A new “inning-by-inning” electronic scoreboard is also part of the upgrade “In modern day athletics facilities are so important for the college for the individual players,” said Concordia head baseball coach Chris Coste who also manages the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks The amount of hours he’s spent at that ballpark the amount of batting practice pitches he’s thrown and fungos he’s hit Burgau was the Cobbers head baseball coach for 36 seasons before stepping down from that post after the 2014 season He’s been a Concordia assistant coach for Coste since it’s really been a treat to do this with my dad,” Bergeson said “It’s really special to see this come to fruition while he’s still at Concordia That field has been a labor of love for him … He is so excited to see some of these upgrades because I think it makes our facility a little bit more fan friendly That place has been really special for him.” Coste said the grandstand at Bucky Burgau Field is going to have a similar look to the grandstand at West Fargo’s Young Field and will provide more visibility for the Cobbers baseball program on Eighth Street Bergeson said the project is expected to be completed in the winter and ready for the spring baseball season The Cobbers are Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members “This is something that’s been on the schedule for quite some time,” Bergeson said “To keep up with MIAC facilities and high school facilities it’s important that we started to check some things off the list.” Bergeson said the project is being funded through private donations and is the first of two phases A second phase is expected to include artificial turf for both the infield and outfield along with new bullpens and a batting cage Bucky Burgau field currently has a turf infield with a natural grass outfield which currently doesn't have a set timeline is expected to include Little League baseball field lines in each corner of the outfield “One of my dad’s dreams was to put Little League field lines in the right and left field corners so we can technically have three games going on at the same time and I think that meets a really neat community need for us to have more fields for boys and girls that are playing ball in the summer,” Bergeson said Bergeson added for $1,000 a donor can have a seat named in the grandstand and that money would be used for the second phase of the project “It’s kind of a tribute to Bucky in a lot of ways,” Coste said of the upgrades MOORHEAD — The Concordia Cobbers started a Tuesday doubleheader with a dramatic 7-6 victory in Game 1 against St Olaf in With Ramp Greens Purée and Uni Butter “The crawfish flavor was really foremost in the dish,” said Susan Spicer executive editor of the national Food Arts Magazine Burgau dubbed his dish “a riff on Crawfish Monica with no cream and no cheese.” Instead he tossed crawfish tails and fresh pasta in an “uni” butter that he made by combining the sushi item uni (the Japanese name for the edible part of sea urchin) with high-fat He garnished his dish with a fried soft-shell crawfish a graduate of Johnson & Wales University said he’s been working in restaurants since he was 14 He trained under Patois chef Aaron Burgau, Ian McNulty reports this week Central City BBQ will take over a former seafood market/Chinese restaurant at 1201 S across from Paradigm Gardens and close to Dryades Market There will be indoor and outdoor dining and a catering facility—they'll be doing whole hog barbecue for events "We'll be doing barbecue the good old fashioned way," Bechtold tells McNulty so do expect the return of this magic and then some: Nola Smokehouse's finest [Photo: Brasted] Topgolf is approved the second time around He’s also a partner on forthcoming Metairie Tex-Mex restaurant Las Cruces It sounds like Burgau and team are content to keep the acclaimed Station 6 much the same including keeping in place chef Jeremy Latimer and general manager Dawn Michel The delightfully quirky Mister Mao will soon bring back one of its original distinguishing elements — roving the “Here Comes the Chuck Wagon” selections return offering items like Filipino chicken lumpia; Covey Rise sugar snap peas with sesame yum yum sauce; crispy popcorn shrimp with honey milk mayo; pork siu mai with leeks and ginger; Bright Side oysters; and and “meat on tiny sticks” with garlic yogurt and cucumber pickles (many of which are gluten-free) Mall food holds a special, nostalgic place in the hearts of Americans So it’s good news that Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie is gaining four new restaurants to its food court soon The additions include one locally-born spot with the rest national chains: DosBros Fresh Mexican Grill There’s also a Louisiana-born chain in the works for the mall property though not in the food court — Habaneros is taking over a space previously occupied by Chez Pierre and Poke World — Concordia baseball is getting an upgrade Bucky Burgau field will look much different next season with the first starting in August includes a new covered grandstand behind home plate with individual seating Anyone part of the cobber family can also donate one thousand dollars to get a seat named after them What Burgau looks forward to most is the new inning by inning electronic scoreboard out in right field. The design was inspired by some of the parks around the F-M area and all part of making the first views of campus more appealing “I went over one night to West Fargo to recruit I really liked the structure they had with the roof on and press box,” Burgau said “You’re driving in from the south and the first thing you see is the baseball field and the football field The football has made some nice renovations with the video scoreboard and turf We wanted our baseball field to look good from eight street so people can say hey this is Concordia It's been a different story in 2024 so far for the Black Sox With a 12-2 win in seven innings over the Ashby A's at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria on Friday the Black Sox moved to 4-1 on the year in the Resorters League and 4-2 overall "We're a lot better than we were last year," Alexandria Black Sox player-manager Brady Burgau said I went out and drafted more guys that weren't playing on their team the Black Sox plated nine runs in the bottom of the second inning as Waylon Muenzhuber hit a 2-RBI single The Black Sox kept their bats going in the third inning as Burgau hit a 2-run home run that was followed by a solo home run by Tate Breitkreutz "That was awesome," Burgau said about the back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third inning And while Ashby scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning it's deficit was too much to overcome as Alexandria won 12-2 in seven innings Carter Stockert earned the win on the mound for the Black Sox "He's our best pitcher by far," Burgau said so he wants the ball every chance he gets." The Black Sox have gotten a good feel for what the Resorters League will be like this season as they have beaten the A's and the Kensington Norsemen twice and have an 8-2 loss to the Urbank-Parkers Prairie Bombers The Black Sox also expect tough challenges from the Sauk Centre Titans and the Carlos Cougars and they're a good hitting team," Burgau said and it's always fun playing those two teams close." Alexandria is at the portion of the season where it is trying to put players in different positions to get the best lineup based on whose available and I hop around where I'm needed," Burgau said "I usually have two or three guys ready to go on the mound It's nice to not have to worry about who is pitching." Pitmaster Rob Bechtold is no longer working at Central City BBQ according to a restaurant rep close to the situation The rep confirmed Bechtold was let go on Saturday, though a report by Todd Price on NOLA.com cites Burgau saying the departure was “mutual.” The rep did not immediately respond to follow-up questions about the details of the departure Eater has reached out to both Central City BBQ owner Aaron Burgau and Rob Bechtold Central City BBQ has only been open three months Bechtold had “developed a reputation for his argumentative and combative behavior.” In the report Burgau describes “disagreements about the operation of the kitchen as the reason for the split,” such as Burgau’s idea that the kitchen should not run out of meat “in mid-afternoon before the dinner crowd arrived.” Bechtold and Burgau had planned to compete together for Hogs for the Cause this weekend Burgau’s team will still compete without Bechtold Central City BBQ’s social media accounts were pulled and re-established though there was no immediate information on why that happened Eater will update this story with any new information from the restaurant 2017 1:15 pm — This story was updated to reflect the current status of the Hogs for the Cause team that Burgau and Bechtold had planned to compete on together will reopen with new owners and a pitmaster chef which has since become one of the city’s top destinations for barbecue The bare-bones neighborhood restaurant has been around since 1932, serving only steaks and simple, traditional sides like potato gratin, onion rings, and creamed spinach in a homey atmosphere. Taking her east would bring you towards the busy town of Portimao, he reasoned, so it would make sense to head west. There, he said, near Burgau, were underwater caves that could hide the child has she been cast into the sea. Daily Star Online visited the village to investigate the theory and found locals were baffled by the theory. One long-time resident said the only caves he knew of were above sea level and a nightmare to get to. He told Daily Star Online: "I know one cave that I used to play when I was a kid. But it’s not easy to get there." We found the route there marked by challenging hills and steep cliffs; difficult terrain by day – and forbidding by night. And a car can’t help; the cliffs closest to the west of Burgau are only accessible on foot and locals knew of no caves to the east. None of that recommends itself to a kidnapper under pressure, which might be why locals are sceptical of Madeleine being hidden near Burgau. One told Daily Star Online: “It’s completely rubbish. It’s very difficult ground by yourself. Carrying a body? Forget about it.” And if there are underwater caves nearby, casting someone into the sea in the dead of night is not without challenges. A beach to the west of town, the Praia das Cabanas Velhas, offers easier access to the sea for someone driving. But reaching deeper waters means carrying a child over the slippery rocks at the beach’s edge by moonlight. It also doesn’t explain why a kidnapper who doesn’t yet know they’re wanted would abduct a child and immediately abandon them. Nonetheless, there are reasons to believe Mr Cristovao’s theory that whoever took Madeleine McCann would have headed west out of Praia da Luz. One local with knowledge of the case noted that heading east would also mean heading towards the nearest police presence, the cop shop in nearby Lagos. Mr Cristovao, explaining his theory to the Mirror, said he reached his conclusion about the caves by climbing into "the shoes of somebody who had just taken a child". He said: "To the east are people, buildings and a higher chance of detection. By heading west there is wilderness… It is a short walk to these rocks."
