The technology group Wärtsilä will supply equipment for the world’s second-largest plant capable of liquefying bio-methane and synthetic methane from renewable energy sources to produce carbon-neutral transportation fuel
When operational it will have a capacity of approximately 63,000 tons Bio-LNG per year
The contract was placed in March 2022 by the German energy company REEFUELERY GmbH – a joint venture of Erdgas Südwest GmbH and avanca
a company focused on sustainable energy and logistics solutions
The plant will be located in Burghaun near Fulda
Burghaun was chosen as the preferred location for this project due to its direct access to the MIDAL
one of the most powerful gas pipelines in Germany
The central location enables optimum supply to the Alternoil filling stations – owned by the avanca group
The plant will utilise biomethane from communal and agricultural waste materials as feedstock
The biomethane is subsequently liquefied and delivered to the Alternoil filling station network as the climate-neutral fuel REEFUEL (Bio-LNG)
“REEFUEL can be used in any LNG-fuelled truck and contributes significantly to the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport
The construction of the liquefaction plant will reduce CO2 emissions along the entire supply chain
thereby effectively using economies of scale
"Wärtsilä has already been a valuable partner in other projects
We are very pleased that we can now once again draw on Wärtsilä's extremely precious expertise for the REEFUELERY," says Frank Erben
Managing Director of REEFUELERY GmbH and Investment Manager of Erdgas Südwest GmbH
“Decarbonisation solutions are at the front and centre of Wärtsilä’s strategies
and we are delighted to support REEFUELERY in the realisation of their first German biomethane liquefaction plant
Our unmatched in-house expertise and vast experience in the process design
as well as mature gas treatment solutions prior to liquefaction
form a solid foundation for building a sustainable future,” commented Walter Reggente
The plant is expected to become fully operational during the first quarter of 2024
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions is a market leader with innovative systems and lifecycle solutions for the gas value chain
Our main focus areas are handling of gas in seaborne transport (storage
We help our customers on the journey towards a sustainable future through focus on lifecycle

RWE has been awarded a tender by HessenForst
On two sites in the municipality of Burghaun in the district of Fulda
RWE plans to build a wind farm with an installed capacity of 33 megawatts
after which the five wind turbines will be able to generate enough green electricity to supply over 22,700 households with green electricity each year
CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia: “To drive forward the energy transition in Germany
we are massively increasing our investments
strengthening our team and thereby accelerating the expansion of renewable energy
leaving ecologically valuable areas untouched
The forest’s wind will thus make an important contribution to climate protection
while at the same time complying with strict nature conservation and species protection requirements.”
RWE is currently in dialogue with local stakeholders
This includes talks with the local energy cooperative Energiegenossenschaft Burghaun and the regional energy supplier RhönENERGIE-Gruppe
Options for the participation of citizens and neighbouring communities are also being explored
In its many years of experience in the development
RWE has specifically focused on local partnerships and has successfully implemented many projects with the participation of local authorities and citizens
RWE intends to invite interested residents of Burghaun to information events to present the progress of the project
As one of the world’s leading companies in the field of renewable energies
RWE is driving forward the expansion of its renewables activities
RWE plans to invest around €11 billion net in its green portfolio in its home market Germany
The company already operates around 90 onshore wind farms in Germany
