This is also officially the biggest World Series of Poker Main Event in history as the 8,773 record was broken shortly into Day 1d that's not the only record broken this year is the oldest player to ever participate in the Main Event at 100 years old He sits down on this final starting flight along with Chris Moneymaker The two shared a special moment on the biggest stage of the most prestigious poker tournament The "Shuffle Up and Deal" to kick off the Main Event is always a special moment It's reserved for important members of the community to recognize their contributions and accomplishments Moneymaker was clearly the choice to have the honors this year Vice President of the World Series of Poker Jack Effel introduced Moneymaker to the crowd just before play started "I'm willing to bet many of you played your first tournament after watching this man win the Main Event in 2003," said Effel before handing the microphone over for Moneymaker's big moment That's what made it so touching when he chose to share the stage with Calden the centenarian Chris spoke about his historic run two decades ago and how things have changed since then "What people don't understand these days is that poker was dying 20 years ago," said Moneymaker You couldn't find a tournament anywhere anytime like you can now I love this game and I'm so happy to be a part of it." Sitting nearby was a patient Gene Calden; lights Players sat across the Paris and Horseshoe venues to hear Moneymaker pass the microphone to the newest WSOP record holder "I'd like to introduce you all to Gene Calden," said Moneymaker Gene beat me up at the Moneymaker Tour and knocked me out of a few tournaments the computer was registering him as zero years old they said he was too young to play," the crowd laughed I'm going to let Gene do the honors of starting us off today," and Moneymaker turned the floor of anxious ears over to Calden A smile graced the face of the man who was about to play the Main Event for the first time at the age of 100 With his daughter nearby to be a part of the iconic moment and with an eagerness of which the most youthful would be envious Calden said those words we all love to hear both Moneymaker and Calden headed to their respective seats to join the action If you've played poker in the Fort Lauderdale area, you're likely already familiar with Calden. We were introduced to him during the inaugural Moneymaker Tour stop at the Palm Beach Kennel Club Calden played multiple events and even won the Moneymaker Mulligan Event #5 for $5,160 He held his own on the feature table during the Main Event When Calden would bust from whichever event he was playing he would immediately hop into the $2/$5 game downstairs at the cash tables I can personally say that I donated some dollars to the Gene Calden wallet while I was there "We got in late the other night," said Calden's daughter Sue he woke up and wanted to immediately get into a cash game We wish the best of luck to both Calden and Moneymaker as they seek to navigate this massive Day 1d field in search of a Main Event bag community and friendly rivalry will be on display at the Villa Maria Hall vs Christy Hall annual Soccer Derby on Merlo Field on Sunday The Beacon talked to their respective hall directors and a player in the upcoming game to bring you insight on the upcoming match Each year Villa Maria Hall and Christie Hall go head to head in their annual Soccer Derby to determine the winner of the game’s perpetual cup This long held tradition usually ends in a win for Villa Maria Hall as the hall has taken home the Soccer Derby cup every year for over 20 years they plan on keeping the winning tradition alive and taking home the cup again this year “Oh yeah,” Villa Maria Resident Assistant Jack Calden said This training comes in the form of an all dorm Villa event called ‘Villa Soccer’ that encourages soccer loving residents to head down to the River Campus field for practice every Friday at 4.p.m since the start of the academic year in August Christie has been preparing for the match by hosting weekly soccer practices called ‘Christie Kicks’ every Saturday morning These practices were spearheaded by Christie Hall Resident Assistant Zach Jokisch and are a fun community building event for the hall After a period of closure during the COVID-19 pandemic the hall is ready to get out there and build community at this fun event that they say is less of a competitive game and more of an opportunity for building inter-dorm relationships “Our RAs had to be exiled from Christie when it was closed and so you kind of lose a little bit of the community bonding and participation,” Christie Hall Director Pablo Quan Lopez CSC said “We’ve been trying to re-establish some of those traditions.”   Villa Maria Hall Director Carter Smith also emphasized the inter-hall community building opportunity this game presents “It’s being able to be a part of something that’s not necessarily your immediate dorm community,” Smith said “I think that’s very important in creating a positive campus culture.” A common excitement for playing time on Merlo Field is a sentiment that members of both halls share “It’s definitely one of the perks of the games that we get to go play on the actual nicest pitch in the country.” “It’s like getting to play on the field is more of an experience for them than whether you win or lose right Players with experience playing this game in past years can confirm just how special the opportunity feels Merlo is one of the nicest college fields in the U.S so the opportunity for students to play there is a unique one “After the game [in 2022] I walked back on the field and I just laid there because it was so nice.” Villa player Jonah Montgomery said “When you’ve been playing soccer for a while you learn to appreciate nice grass.”  When asked what Villa players to watch out for “Jonah Montgomery is probably one of the best players out there … but don’t tell him I said that,” Calden said “Say he can’t shoot with his left foot … Can you put that in the article Maggie Dapp is a sports reporter for The Beacon. Noyes Professor in the UO's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and most know what happens if you use too little or two much. Too little leads to low crop yield Too much gives you algae blooms in lakes and dead zones at river deltas." The project emerged from ideas generated by Haley and fellow chemistry professor Darren Johnson over coffee a decade ago with initial funding from an NSF grant that covered his salary was challenged to create a probe that could monitor the movement of chloride through cells. Instead but the implications weren't readily clear A grant from the NSF-funded Innovation Corps moved the research forward Haley and Johnson then founded SupraSensor Technologies with financial support from the NSF's Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer program the new company tested 150 of the wireless sensors in agricultural fields "The Science Nation story clearly illustrates highly applied science with roots in basic research." a veteran independent journalist who focuses on science and technology came to the UO to film footage for the segment last September "They were particularly interested in focusing on how the basic research got us to the point of commercialization activities," Johnson said "They shot video on location in research space in the Lewis Integrative Science Building at the UO's Urban Farm showing the use of the sensor in a field and at SupraSensor headquarters in Eugene's Fertilab Thinkubator." "I knew we would get some good science and nice publications out of the project but this work has gone much further and has grown more successful than either of us could have imagined much of the credit goes to the great graduate and undergraduate students that have worked with us on the sensors project." who serves as president of SupraSensor Technologies earned his doctorate in chemistry from the UO in 2011 All stories in Academics and Research uonews@uoregon.edu scientific breakthroughs happen by chance or mistake — take the example of Alexander Fleming a British scientist who discovered penicillin in 1928 after noticing patterns in bacteria on the petri dishes in his London lab National Public Radio’s annual 2016 Golden Mole Award for Accidental Brilliance honors just such serendipitous events Former University of Oregon graduate student Calden Carroll made the short list of nominees for his accidental creation of a molecule that lights up in the presence of nitrate — an accident that has led him away from his original field of chemistry and into the agricultural realm “This is great recognition of Calden's hard work,” said Darren Johnson a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the UO “A lot of the ‘accidental discovery’ results from Calden's tenacity and understanding of the market opportunities of his basic science research.” Carroll is the president and co-founder — along with UO professors Johnson and Michael Haley — of SupraSensor Technologies a company that  is harnessing and developing the innovation of the bright molecule for agricultural purposes The goal of the company is to avoid the overuse of nitrogen-based fertilizers through SupraSensor’s molecular technologies “I think we all want to use really basic scientific curiosity to ask simple questions about how the world works and then to solve everyday problems with those insights,” Carroll said “This process is crucial to help demonstrate the impact that a really detailed elemental understanding of physical and natural processes can have and the value that asking those questions can contribute to everyday life.” Carroll’s discovery was nominated for the award by someone they don’t even know — a testament to the wide-reaching influence of the team’s accidental brilliance NPR announced Tuesday morning that the winner of the Golden Mole Award was University of Michigan biologist Elizabeth Tibbets who accidentally discovered how wasps recognize each other After forgetting to mark a few of them with tracking paint during a study she realized that each wasp actually had distinct facial features — and after pursuing this revelation she discovered their brains are wired to recognize faces The Maine Sporting Camp Association is saying that Governor Janet Mills' rural reopening plan will fall short of helping our rural communities The association says the plan fails to provide relief for commercial sporting camps The president says the plan limits visitations from out of state residents since they are asked to quarantine for 14 days when they arrive in Maine 90% of their revenue comes from people visiting from out of state "If these people; if she wants them to self-isolate themselves for 14 days But does it matter if they self isolate in Kittery Maine or if they self isolate in Portsmouth They have self isolated," says Harvey Calden President of the Maine Sporting Camp Association Calden says that the association proposed a compromise to the Governor on having out of state people 'self certify' with them meaning that they record themselves in isolation for 14 days either in Maine or elsewhere 2017 at 5:24 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}October 13 - A break-in was reported at Abellamia Florist on Washington Street was arrested on Countryside Lane on a warrant - Teens and parents inside Dunkin’ Donuts on Nahatan Street were upset a woman who took photos of them simulating cocaine use with straws The photographer agreed to delete the photos and was observed doing so by the officer - An employee at McDonald’s on Broadway reported a person who was in the restaurant for three hours The person was charging their phone and was asked to move along Get more local news delivered straight to your inbox.
