BERLIN (AP) — A 32-year-old Iranian man has been detained in Germany following a tip from U.S
security officials that he could be planning an attack with deadly chemicals
Police and prosecutors said the man and another person were detained overnight in the town of Castrop-Rauxel
The authorities said in a joint statement that the man is suspected to have planned a serious attack motivated by Islamic extremism
for which he had allegedly sought to obtain the potent toxins cyanide and ricin
Specialists wearing anti-contamination suits were seen carrying evidence out of the man’s home
Duesseldorf prosecutors later said an initial search of the premises turned up no toxic substances
It wasn’t immediately clear how far advanced the plans for an attack were and whether the suspect had picked a specific target

German news agency dpa quoted the top security official for North Rhine-Westphalia state
as saying authorities had received “a serious tip that led police to intervene the same night.”
Tabloid newspaper Bild reported that the tip about the alleged plot came from an allied intelligence agency
Duesseldorf prosecutors confirmed that the information came from authorities in the United States
Dpa cited an unidentified German security official as saying there was no indication the suspect had acted on behalf of the Iranian state
but rather that he allegedly supported a Sunni extremist group
Germany’s top security official thanked police and specialists from the country’s disease control agency who had taken part in the raid
“Our security services take any information about Islamist terror threats very seriously
and act,” Interior Minister Nancy Faser said in a statement
adding that 21 Islamist attacks had been prevented in Germany since the start of the century
Faeser noted the importance of international cooperation in fighting extremist threats and said further investigations by Duesseldorf prosecutors would show whether the suspicions that triggered the police operation were warranted

The disrupted plot highlights not only the continued threat stemming from Islamic State (IS)-inspired perpetrators—who continue to have interest in developing and deploying a biological weapon—but also the critical international intelligence cooperation needed to prevent such attacks
shows the continued threat from loosely IS-connected and IS-inspired individuals
It also underscores the continued interest of Islamist-motivated perpetrators in bioterrorism and their desire to inflict significant losses of life
the disrupted plot was already the second one involving ricin
While US-German counterterrorism intelligence cooperation seems to be functioning well
the potentially catastrophic consequences for any failure should cause Berlin to consider strengthening its own domestic counter-terrorism intelligence gathering capabilities

German police arrested a 32-year-old Iranian man suspected of plotting a chemical attack
The Iranian national was arrested in the town of Castrop-Rauxel
on suspicion of procuring toxins including cyanide and ricin in order to commit a terror attack inspired by Islamic extremism
Another person was detained during the operation
The Iranian’s house was cordoned off and searched in order to secure further evidence, with German media reporting that several officers and emergency workers in full protective suits were present at the scene

Police detain 32-year-old in town near Dortmund after tipoff from foreign agency believed to be the FBI
German police have arrested an Iranian man suspected of planning a chemical attack motivated by Islamic extremism
The 32-year-old was seized at his flat shortly before midnight on Saturday in the town of Castrop-Rauxel, close to Dortmund in western Germany
The arrest followed a tip-off from a foreign intelligence agency that the man had obtained toxins
with which he planned to carry out a terror attack
He was known to police but not for his links to terrorism
and it is as yet unclear whether he was involved in the plot
The brothers are believed to have lived in Germany since 2015
The men were put into waiting police vehicles in the small shopping street
dressed in just their underwear and with coats draped over their shoulders
escorted by police in heavy protective suits
The SEK special forces who organised the operation reportedly arrived in the street in a fire engine in an effort to disguise themselves until the last minute
A decontamination unit of officers and scientists from the government’s agency for disease control and prevention
According to a spokesperson for Düsseldorf’s state prosecutor
no dangerous substances were found in the flat
Reports in German media on Sunday said the FBI had been behind the tipoff after identifying the main suspect as a sympathiser of the terror group Islamic State
in whose name they said he had intended to carry out the attack
He is not believed to have been acting on behalf of the Iranian state
German security sources told the news agency DPA
describing him as being a supporter of a “Sunni Islamistic terror group”
with security agents discovering that the main suspect had searched for ricin and cyanide on the internet and bought the substances
with the intention of building a bioweapon
Initially the man had intended to carry out an attack on New Year’s Eve
but did not have enough materials to do so
and had subsequently managed to procure the missing items in the last few days

the interior minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in which the operation took place
said: “We had information which needed to be taken seriously
which is why the police were prompted to make their move in the night.” He said more details about the investigation would be made public in the coming days
In 2018 a similar plan was thwarted after police arrested a 29-year-old man and his wife in Cologne who had planned to use ricin seeds and 250 steel balls to make a bomb
using instructions provided via the internet by IS
They had carried out test explosions in the 15-storey block of flats where they lived
ricin is listed as a weapon of war under the rubric of chemical and biological weapons
It is produced from the seeds of the ricin plant (castor bean)
The ingestion of less than 2mg of the substance can prove deadly
there is no medical antidote and only the symptoms it causes can be treated
The terrorism expert Peter Neumann at King’s College London was quoted by Die Zeit as saying it should be of concern in Germany that almost all terrorist plots planned on German soil in recent years have been thwarted only due to tipoffs from US intelligence services
He said the risk of Islamist terror attacks was lower than it had been six to seven years ago

Screenshot of Electric Callboy’s page on YouTube
My life changed the moment I saw a bunch of German men in matching outfits singing and bobbing their heads in a music video
I was introduced to Electric Callboy a couple years ago
A song called “We Got the Moves” was shown to me with a really weird music video
All the members of the band were wearing coordinating white shirts
rectangular glasses and ugly bowl cut wigs
and next thing you know outsiders slowly walked by and reciprocated this bobbing head motion
but I was mesmerized by these guys playing a heavy rock song in a backyard barbecue setting.
Electric Callboy is described as electro-metal
a mixture of electronic music and metal music
the band has grown a lot since their first name
Fans have addressed offensive content in old lyrics and their name
which led to the changing of their band name and their response to the comments.
The band is mostly known for their comedic songs
sexualized lyrics and music videos; but to me
My obsession quickly went from casually listening to “We Got the Moves” to buying a physical copy of their newest album
Anytime I needed something to brighten my mood
I would guide myself to their music because their songs have such a pick-me-up feel to them
The comedy and sexual connotations in their music were apparent and catchy
but I never thought I would come across truly emotional songs
I was all that more in love with Electric Callboy.
“Prism” and “Mindreader” are two songs that have stuck out to me and brought out feelings I didn’t know this band was capable of pulling from me
My interpretation of “Prism,” is that the subject has been knocked down and doesn’t know how to get back up
The lyrics of the song are someone talking to and reassuring the subject
“You are so special but so insecure with all the struggles you had to endure
you are a light caught in a prism.” Those three lines encapsulate the modern day young person
to a tee and knowing that I feel seen in this sense is an amazing feeling
“Mindreader” is off of Tekkno and my personal favorite on the album
The idea is of that special someone that is knowingly toxic to you but you can’t get them off your mind
but the way the lyrics portray it is truly a piece of art in my opinion.
but the music video is as well — literally
The video features singers Kevin Ratajczak and Nico Sallach and the imagery of the song comes from women with body paint and clothing to make them appear ghoulish and haunting
running their claws over their bodies in a powering way
While this is much different from Electric Callboy’s usual music videos
I feel it’s a very beautiful statement and visually shows the band’s diversity.
This is my official message to not judge a book by its cover
because I never would have thought a meme band would be my top three songs in my Spotify Wrapped at the end of last year. Foreign bands or artists aren’t as intimidating as they seem and you may be able to find your new favorite musicians among artists outside the U.S.

BYD has handed over its first electric buses in Germany
The landmark moment was celebrated a few days ago when the operators BOGESTRA (Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen) and HCR (Straßenbahn Herne-Castrop-Rauxel) have taken delivery of the first vehicle in a joint fleet order for 22 eBuses from the Chinese producer (which has recently delivered 10 e-buses in Hungary)
emissions-free 12-metre BYD eBus fleet will go into service in the Germany state of North Rhine-Westphalia
on route 380 in Gelsenkirchen and route 354 in Bochum
in Bochum there is also a batch of Ebusco vehicles in operation
BYD’s 12-metre single-deck eBus delivers a total carrying capacity of 80 passengers and boasts a single charge range of over 200km according to the manufacturer
The 22 vehicles will be operating in the densely populated area of Gelsenkirchen
does the math: “With these efforts to keep the air clean
BOGESTRA will then operate around ten percent of its bus fleet purely electrically
And that is an important contribution to our climate protection activities in the city.”
with regards to this first delivery of BYD e-buses in Germany
added: “Being able to drive from Weitmar to Riemke in the near future without emissions and with low noise is an important step towards greater climate protection on the ground
It shows that BOGESTRA is keeping its promises and I am pleased that more eBuses will be used soon.”
BOGESTRA board member Jörg Filter confirms: “BOGESTRA is an important player in the area of sustainability
We take responsibility for the environment and climate protection very seriously and we are making an important contribution to the quality of life in Bochum and Gelsenkirchen.”
“We are delighted to be entering the German market
22 vehicles is a major acquisition for BOGESTRA and HCR
and it shows a significant commitment to BYD
to have returned this commitment by meeting the planned delivery schedule
even despite restrictions following the coronavirus outbreak
BYD continues to develop advanced technologies to produce a safe
reliable and emissions-free transport solution for Local Authorities and Public Transport Operators,” he said
“and to help create a more sustainable future for everyone.”

German public transport companies Bogestra (Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen) and HCR (Straßenbahn Herne-Castrop-Rauxel) have ordered a total of 22 electric buses from Chinese electric automotive giant BYD (Build Your Dreams)
This is the first electric-bus order for BYD from Germany
++ Kindly find all updates to this article below
Bogestra will procure 20 emission-free buses and HCR will be getting two
The first BYD buses are scheduled to arrive in summer 2020
These will be put into operation in the German cities of Bochum
The intermediate charging of buses in Bochum will take place at the Bogestra depot
The capacity of the batteries enables them to be used over a distance of up to 200 kilometres
buses will run on line 380 which takes passengers from the main station via Kurt-Schumacher-Straße in the direction of Buer
Here the buses head for the final stop Buer Rathaus for intermediate charging
The buses are about twelve metres long and can carry up to 80 passengers
commented that: “We are very proud of this important order
which demonstrates our capabilities in a market dominated by German brands
BYD’s efforts will make a strong contribution to reducing emissions and improving air quality
that is even more important than our first order in Germany.”
BYD has made such a strong headstart in the electric bus business that over the last couple of years
German automotive manufacturers have missed out on numerous international contracts due to their lack of series-ready zero-emissions public transport vehicles
Now that German public transport providers are themselves turning to the Chinese electric bus manufacturer
German companies have an increasingly steep entry curve
The buses will cost the German public service providers approximately ten million euros
This has been made possible thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment
Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Immediate Programme “Clean Air 2017 – 2020”)
the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Authority (VRR)
Update 10 August 2020: BYD has started deliveries under its first electric bus order from Germany
the Bogestra (Bochum-Gelsenkirchen trams) and HCR (Herne-Castrop-Rauxel trams) public transport companies ordered a total of 22 electric buses from BYD
delivery of all 22 electric buses is scheduled for completion by October 2020
Drivers and workshop employees are now to be trained on the green and white labelled E-bus
With several hundred training participants
this will “certainly take several months”
Before the buses can go into regular service
the charging infrastructure must also be in operation
Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf and at the central bus station in Gelsenkirchen Buer are currently being equipped with the charging technology by ABB
The deployment on line 354 in Bochum and 380 in Gelsenkirchen is a test run
The Bogestra and HCR are testing the BYD eBus for all members of the Eastern Ruhr Area Cooperation
In this cooperation seven partners have joined forces

Bridges to nowhere are international monuments of failure. Whether the highways meant to connect to them never got built, funding dried out, contracts got canceled, or they were hit by a disaster and left to ruin, these bridges are an overpass to nothing. Some like the isolated Viaduct Petrobras in the Brazilian jungle have found new life as destinations for bungee jumpers and rappellers
but most just wait idly for a purpose that may never arrive
In Germany there are so many of these bridges to nowhere due to a stunted Autobahn plan that they have their own term — “Soda-Brücke” — a pun roughly meaning “just there.”

TORONTO — The federal government has ramped up financial support to help transition homeowners away from oil furnaces — the most expensive way to heat a home — to heat pumps instead
so here are some answers to common questions about heat pumps
Heat pumps are machines that move heat to where it is
they can suck heat from outside and pump it into the house (there is heat in the air
they can pull heat from inside the house and push it outside
The machines use coolant to transfer the energy to where it’s wanted
Why is there a push to shift to these systems
Heat pumps are an important part of hitting climate goals because home and building heating creates about 10 per cent of Canada’s carbon emissions
The machines are generally much more energy-efficient than fossil fuel-based systems
they can be part of a net-zero energy system
The shift to heat pumps can also mean cost savings for households
the federal government said homeowners on oil could save up to $2,500 a year by switching to the system
Those savings come in part because oil is an expensive way to heat a home
Fortis BC says that it would cost about $3,650 a year to heat a home in the Lower Mainland with oil
which is much more commonly used to heat homes in Canada than oil
The cost savings on heat pumps compared with other systems depend on factors like how cold it gets
The Canadian Climate Institute put out an assessment last month on potential savings
finding that heat pumps are the lowest-cost option for most households
which generally range between $5,000 and $10,000
because of the energy cost-saving and because they can be used both for heating and cooling
Government incentives also help make them more cost competitive
a single family home in Toronto would spend about $2,250 on natural gas heating plus air conditioning a year
compared with $1,910 on a standard heat pump with electric backup
where it’s colder and gas is cheaper
gas heating is estimated to cost about $1,830 a year
while a standard heat pump with electric backup could run $2,140
Using gas as the backup with a standard heat pump would bring the costs down to about $1,750
Heat pumps are increasingly an option in cold weather
with specific cold-climate machines operating in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius
cold-climate heat pumps are much more expensive than standard options
which generally max out at around -10 degrees Celsius
Because heat pumps do have a minimum operating temperature
