Attention is focused on regional vote this Sunday that could determine the fate of the national government
Björn Höcke shielded his eyes from the bright lights as he peered from the stage into the crowds gathered on a square in front of a gothic church in central Cottbus
Flanked by the slogans “It’s time for real change” and “It’s time to save our country,” the leader of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in Thuringia swept into Cottbus
the second largest city in the state of Brandenburg
for the party’s final rally before a regional election on Sunday that could determine the fate of Germany’s government
Fresh from an election victory three weeks ago
in which his party secured 33% of the vote
“I see a lot of women and young men,” he said
“It used to be only old white men who were concerned about the future of … our beloved German Fatherland
Now everyone recognises that they’re affected by the fatal politics of the cartel parties.”
holding banners reading: “Fed up to the back teeth”
Among them were clusters of young men in their 20s with distinct haircuts and bomber jackets
as well as 14- and 15-year-old school friends Ruben
“They’re about to write history,” said Micah
clutching a souvenir AfD mug embossed with the motto: “Somebody has to stay awake” in one hand
and clenching the other in a fist which he shook in apparent approval of Höcke
but we’re ready and waiting for when we finally can.”
The AfD, narrowly leading in the polls ahead of the Social Democrats (SPD)
where the party has formed the strongest faction in the city parliament since 2019
With 27% of Brandenburgers still undecided if they will vote at all and if so for whom
campaigning is expected to continue feverishly until the last minute

and suburban settlements surrounding Berlin
with its predicted boost for the far-right party
the race is drawing a huge amount of attention that belies the state’s size
the AfD upended the status quo with its win in Thuringia – the first time a far-right force had won a state election in post-war Germany – accompanied by a strong second place in neighbouring Saxony with more than 30%

which has been leading the polls in the state for more than a year
As the only state in eastern Germany where the Social Democrats have ruled continuously since German reunification in 1990, Brandenburg’s vote is seen as a particular test for the embattled coalition government of the SPD chancellor, Olaf Scholz, which, according to a poll this week
only 3% of Germans are convinced is good for the country
With Brandenburg’s vote being viewed as a referendum on Scholz’s government
defeat for the SPD would be of deep symbolic significance
particularly before next autumn’s Bundestag election
A disappointing performance by the SPD would cause humiliation in Berlin and would probably diminish support for Scholz’s intention to run for a second term
LiveWhy the far-right AfD has been so successful in Germany – video explainer Dietmar Woidke
has upped the ante by pledging to resign if the AfD wins on Sunday
He has even excluded Scholz from his election campaign – despite the fact he and his wife live in the state capital

Scholz is not likely to come out of the election well
“it will be seen as a result of him excluding Scholz
it’ll be said this is a defeat for Scholz”

has the cheeky campaign slogan: “Wenn Glatze

of stopping Germany’s military support of Ukraine
and returning to fossil fuels in a rejection of climate change science
He also touches on the party’s remigration project involving the mass deportation of unwanted foreigners
The slogan: “Remigration – of course” is widely displayed on the mugs and stickers which are distributed to rallygoers
An organising member of Chekov said he used to join protests against the far-right “but now we feel a sense of ‘What’s the point?’ We’re not going to convince AfD supporters to change their minds
Chekov is concentrating its energies on hosting its own pre-election event at which participants are invited to discuss their fears

Chusovitina was not in action on the second day of finals, having opted out of competing on the balance beam during the earlier qualifying round.
The men’s competition got underway with Davtyan taking the vault win in dominant fashion. A two-time Olympic medallist on the event, including silver at Paris 2024, the 32-year-old stuck a front handspring double front half-out vault as part of his 14.900 final score.
Davtyan was comfortably ahead of second-place Nazar Chepurnyi of Ukraine, who averaged a 14.216. Niccolo Vannucchi of Italy rounded out the podium with a 13.899.

Competition in Cottbus concluded with the men’s horizontal bar final, where Kawakami Shohei added a second gold medal for Team Japan. He posted a 14.400 score to move ahead of Lithuania's Robert Tvorogal's 14.333. Turkey's Mert Efe Kilicer scored 13.966 to finish in third-place.

the series then heads to Baku (AZE) 6-9 March
and Doha (QAT) 16-19 April before reaching its conclusion with World Cup Apparatus titles distributed after the final in Cairo (EGY) from 25-28 April
many Olympic medallists from Paris 2024 are still getting their act together in the new season that includes the World Championships in Jakarta
there are a few notable medallists from France
and the last World Championships in Antwerp in 2023
and the 2022 world champion on men's vault will be back in World Cup action
yet again wowing the crowd with his explosive performances on the apparatus on which he's also won eight World Cup series' titles
Sugimoto Kaito, a bronze medallist on parallel bars at his debut Worlds, is also on the start list for Cottbus. The 24-year-old played a big part in Japan claiming men's world team gold in Belgium in 2023, the nation's first win in the event in eight years, but did not make the cut for the Olympic gold-medal winning team in France.
Another Japanese gymnast from the men's world championship-winning team who didn't make the grade for Paris 2024, was Minami Kazuki, a two-time floor exercise world silver medallist, who will no doubt be dizzying the crowd with his whirlwind of twisting.

the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in which the rules in artistic gymnastics are updated every four years
on all apparatus apart from vault – so floor
parallel bars and high bar – only eight elements will count toward the difficulty score
with just a refinement of how artistry is defined on beam and floor
plus a new incentive for gymnasts to show two dramatically different vaults
Cottbus will provide the first test for the new COP for gymnasts
The World Cup is also one of the officially sanctioned FIG events in which

to protect a Montenegrin Christian child being hunted by Gjonaj’s troops
and recreating this historical reality posed the greatest production challenge
as we navigated tight budgets and the limitations of filming during the pandemic
it tells the story of a Christian child being hunted by a Muslim paramilitary fascist unit that murdered his parents and burned down his village
Much had to be meticulously portrayed regarding the motives and the concept of authenticity
Capturing these elements accurately and powerfully was essential and incredibly demanding,” director Nikola Vukčević told FNE
The screenplay is adapted from Zuvdija Hodžić’s novel Obraz by Ana Vujadinović

Let me remind you of the dramatic and war-torn history of our former shared homeland
Despite the historic conflicts in our region

The film premiered in Cottbus on 7 November 2024 and will be screened again on 9 November 2024

Dynamo are two minutes short of the 2nd division
Rostock send hapless Sandhausen to the regional league
Cottbus no longer have promotion in their own hands
David Kubatta hung in the net of the goal on the Bielefeld Alm after his unfortunate own goal
472 kilometers away in Dresden's open-air stage Junge Garde
4,000 fans sank to the ground stunned at the public viewing
120 seconds before the end of stoppage time
something happened that no one wanted to believe after Bielefeld's proliferation of chances in the previous 94 minutes: the equalizer
The fact that they had to concede an own goal was an additional knock-out blow for Dresden
the 1:1 draw at second-placed Arminia Bielefeld
gives Dynamo every chance of bagging a return to Bundesliga 2 next week at SV Waldhof Mannheim
Dresden will have to do a lot of psychological rebuilding work
of course," said Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm on "MagentaSport"
Kubatta found the scene for the equalizer "highly unfortunate
But I think that's also part of it," he said on MDR
the game deserved to be called a top match
Dynamo's fighting qualities were particularly in demand
as Arminia's pressure was enormous at times
The defense was worthy of the second division in those moments
crawled on our gums towards the end," said Niklas Hauptmann and promised: "We'll tackle next week the same way we did today and then get the win in Mannheim."
their own promotion ambitions - at least the relegation place - still in sight
FC Hansa could be described as an all-round successful away performance
"We didn't see a 3-0 win because Sandhausen were clearly better in the first half and had the better chances," said Hansa coach Daniel Brinkmann
The words were clear at the break after Sandhausen had carelessly missed countless chances to take a fairly big half-time lead
We did that in the second half and were able to win the game," said Brinkmann on "MagentaSport"
They will now prepare well for the catch-up match against Unterhaching
"Our starting position has definitely not got any worse
we haven't achieved anything," emphasized the coach
Energie Cottbus have said goodbye to the battle for a direct promotion place in Bundesliga 2
It wasn't a lack of willpower that led to a 2:4 (1:2) home defeat against SV Waldhof Mannheim
it was a lack of luck in attack or the class of Mannheim goalkeeper Jan-Christoph Bartels
And some amateurish defending by the Lusatians in the second half
it was a fantastic journey," said Energie coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz on "MagentaSport"
Even though his team no longer have promotion in their own hands
We will build up the team," said the coach
but also noted critically: "The way we conceded goals has nothing to do with top soccer in the 3rd division
The error rate in defense in recent weeks was simply too high
That was also the case in the first half of the season
but our efficiency up front was still good," emphasized Wollitz

Philippines – EJ Obiena kicked off the year with promise as he snagged a silver medal in his first competition in five months
The Filipino pole vault star placed second in the International Springer-Meeting Cottbus in Germany on Wednesday
He cleared 5.65 meters to finish behind Paris Olympics silver medalist Sam Kendricks of the United States

It was also the same injury that bothered Obiena in the lead-up to the Olympics, where he fell short of a medal after losing the bronze to Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis via countback
Obiena came out in good form as he surpassed the first three heights — 5.40m
5.65m — all in a single attempt before he committed three fouls at 5.75m
Kendricks struck gold with a clearance of 5.75m
while Germany’s Bo Kanda Lita Baehre also vaulted past 5.65m like Obiena but settled for bronze via countback
Other competitors included Olympians Ben Broeders of Belgium
The Asian record holder of 6.00m, Obiena previously said his next target is to clear 6.10m and then 6.15m next
