UTSA and TU Darmstadt representatives gather in conversation to discuss global order and contemporary issues

a group of UTSA students had the once-in-a-lifetime experiential learning opportunity to travel to Darmstadt
to participate in a series of discussions on global order and contemporary issues in world politics with university
city and consulate representatives from Germany and San Antonio
The Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt)
one of UTSA’s strategic global partners
The experience was part of a study abroad program led by Matthias Hofferberth
UTSA professor of political science and geography
TU Darmstadt professor of political science
offered 10 UTSA global affairs students a chance to be part of an intercultural classroom with 10 TU Darmstadt students
The participants studied and discussed questions of global order
which refers to the structure and organization of the international system
norms and institutions that govern relations between states and shape global politics
joined the students and professors for a panel discussion in response to the student-led joint seminar titled “Global (Dis)Order.”
The discussion focused on the status of transatlantic relations and future challenges for global order
The panelists highlighted the importance of the transatlantic partnership as a key principle of global order
noting its complexity and the need for active engagement at various levels
They also advocated for a global order that is fairer to all and more open to change
The event concluded with a commitment to fostering fairness and adaptability in global governance
underscoring the strength of the TU Darmstadt-UTSA partnership in promoting international dialogue
a global affairs major and one of the 10 UTSA students who participated in the dialogues
“I found these conversations to be extremely enlightening because they enhanced my understanding about global order and international relations by taking varying perspectives into account,” she said
“As a person who is interested in pursuing a career in the international relations sector
I believe that these cross-cultural dialogues are extremely important so that we can have a better understanding of the world around us and the diverse people that inhabit it.”
UTSA’s formal partnership with TU Darmstadt began in 2017 following a broader “sister city” alliance to build cultural and educational bridges between San Antonio and Darmstadt
the two universities have established strong academic and research opportunities for their students and scholars
Collaborations span topics such as cybersecurity
The collaboration between Hofferberth and Lederer is exemplary of the thriving relationship between the two institutions
“This event is part of a study abroad which grew out of a collaboration that started during the COVID-19 pandemic and featured two online courses shared between TU Darmstadt and UTSA students,” said Hofferberth
“I have been working on this together with Professor Lederer for the last four years and this is the first instance we have been able to travel there in person
The collaboration with Darmstadt has been phenomenal
and we are very excited to represent UTSA during this historic exchange.”
the UTSA group took a field trip to Geneva
to visit international organizations such as the United Nations headquarters
the World Trade Organization and the Red Cross
Students engaged with practitioners and were able to solidify their theoretical discussions into practical understandings
Exchanges between the two institutions have also taken place at the university leadership level. For example, the first delegation from UTSA visited TU Darmstadt in person in Fall 2019
following a delegation from TU Darmstadt to UTSA in the spring of that year
UTSA President Taylor Eighmy visited Darmstadt
This partnership, shepherded over the last seven years by the UTSA Office of Global Initiatives, exemplifies successful international academic collaboration and the importance of scientific cooperation and student exchange in strengthening ties between Germany and America.
“TU Darmstadt is one of our most important strategic partners and
are the only partner with whom we have shared an employee housed at UTSA to grow and strengthen our bond,” said Lisa Montoya
“I congratulate Professor Hofferberth on a wonderful program and thank the city of San Antonio for their longstanding support of this relationship.”
The Global Affairs program at UTSA has experienced significant growth over the last decade
Faculty and leadership from the UTSA Department of Political Science and Geography have been integral to the program’s success
UTSA is committed to educating all students to be global citizens
so they are prepared to meet the challenges of the world today and in the future
Studying abroad and other global experiential learning opportunities help students develop important marketable skills — like confidence
intercultural competency and a global mindset — that will give them an advantage in their careers

After being closed for 12 years for renovation
the Exhibition Hall on Darmstadt’s Mathildenhoehe is open again for art enthusiasts
The first exhibit being held here since 2012 is appropriately named “4-3-2-1 Darmstadt,” a show that traces the past 200 years of art in the city
The Exhibition Hall is part of a series of buildings that the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony
designed and constructed in the early 20th century
when Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse invited seven Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) artists to work and live in Darmstadt
They built a colony of houses and studios on the Mathildenhoehe
made the city the center of the German Art Nouveau movement
The Exhibition Hall was built for the 1908 edition
It’s among the city’s top tourist attractions
along with the Wedding Tower – Darmstadt’s most famous landmark – and the Russian Chapel
built 1899 by Czar Nicholas II for his wife
which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site while being renovated
is an interesting hodgepodge of styles and mediums
the curators mostly divided the 400-plus works in the exhibit geographically
The outlines of neighborhood streets and their names are painted on the floor of each section
their studios and the galleries where their art was shown
Many of the artists exhibited are hardly household names outside of the region
though he didn’t work or live in Darmstadt
He is part of the exhibit because a local publisher
Among the works in the exhibit that stand out are Vera Roehm’s sculpture “Double Binomen,” a self-portrait by artist Ernst Vogel and Eberhard Schlotter’s full-length portrait of the writer Gabriela Wohmann
One section is dedicated to art influenced by the 1944 bombing of the city
The standouts are Willi Hofferbert’s “Madonna of the Ruins” and a group of haunting paintings depicting the carnage by Karl Deppert
An American is also featured in the exhibition
Laura “Polly” Williams ran an art studio in the Darmstadt district of Arheiligen
She said in a 1964 Stars and Stripes article about her work that “this is all modern art on display
No trees or houses and things like that.”
the Mathildenhoehe itself is a piece of art not to be missed
Eleven of the buildings designed by the original Art Nouveau artists are still standing
Their concept propagated the “complete artwork.” Not only were houses of special design
but so were the works of art and the furniture that filled them
Examples of this can be seen in the Artists’ Colony Museum
It’s about a 30-minute drive from Wiesbaden and 1.5 hours from Kaiserslautern
The cheapest garage is under the Rewe supermarket and the Alice-Hospital on Dieburgerstrasse at 1.80 euro for the first hour
If arriving at the city’s main train station
Cost: Admission to the “4-3-2-1 Darmstadt” exhibit is 10 euros for adults and 8 euros for children
The Artists’ Colony Museum is 5 euros for adults 18 and over; children get in free
A combination ticket for both sites is 12 euros for adults
Purchasing a Mathildenhoehe Card online also grants admission to the museum and Wedding Tower
the reduced price for the exhibit (8 euros) and a free bus pass in the city and surroundings for a day
afternoon coffee and cake and Sunday brunch

BorgWarner welcomed us to its Gigafactory in Darmstadt
The plant can produce about 35,000 NMC battery packs in a year using innovative
Investments in LFP batteries are planned to expand the company’s portfolio with products addressed to several sectors
Where there was nothing before Covid, there is now one of the best-equipped gigafactories in Europe. The largest one excluding those belonging to OEMs. The acquisition, which was finalized in 2022
gave BorgWarner access to the battery production plants of former Akasol that now works on three shifts
Our sister media Sustainable Truck&Van has been visiting BorgWarner headquarter. This is an extract of their reporting from Darmstadt. You can read the integral article HERE
aerial platforms) and marine applications are the ones of choice for BorgWarner batteries
with the addition of projects in the field of eTrailers
the bus sector has been very relevant: according to the American group
offices and R&D occupy about 15,000 square meters
plus 4,000 square meters at the nearby Langen site
A total of more than 850 people are engaged in the design and manufacture of battery modules and packs
as well as BMS (Battery management systems) and Removable Contactor Box
BorgWarner’s battery systems division has produced about 5 GWh of battery packs for commercial and industrial vehicles using NMC (Nickel-manganese-cobalt) technology
This is set to increase significantly when the site’s maximum capacity of 3.5 GWh is reached
thanks in part to the finalization of a second highly automated production line
the group expects a production capacity of about 5.4 GWh in 2025
BorgWarner engineers showed us how the assembly lines work
It begins with the insertion of cylindrical cells inside the modules: the third-generation battery packs currently produced by BorgWarner admit two layers of 300 cells
The processes of gluing (including preparing the cell surface) and adding the electronic connections – which are both entrusted to robots – is the most complex part
It takes more than one hours to manufacture a single module
with an interval of a few minutes between the production of one module and the next
The production process of the battery packs
is relatively simpler and is also entrusted to industrial robots for reliability and weight management issues

Tobias Kempe spoke in a media briefing on Wednesday (April 30) about his final games with SV Darmstadt 98 and his departure
The Lilies' long-standing team also aims to defend their title at the RW Walldorf small-sided tournament on Labor Day (May 1)
We report on these and other topics related to SV 98 in our weekly column "Lilien Across the Board."
Tobias Kempe’s final games in the SV Darmstadt 98 jersey are coming up – and they will be emotional
The 35-year-old will retire from playing for the Lilies after this season
„At some point you reach an age where you have to make room for the younger players,“ said Kempe in a media briefing after Wednesday’s training session (April 30)
In the coming weeks he will primarily soak up what has always made football special for him: the connection to the fans
„All the messages I received when I left touched me deeply,“ explained the veteran
His wish: „In the best case scenario
we get three wins from the remaining three games.“ But no matter how the season ends – the last game in his own „living room“ against Jahn Regensburg will be a very special moment for Tobias Kempe
the SV Darmstadt 98 traditional team will be in action again
they will be participating in the RW Walldorf small-sided tournament
renowned traditional teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt

eLilie Nassim competed for the German championship in the individual competition at the major offline event in Köln – as one of the 16 best EAFC25 players in Germany
Nassim comfortably defeated Ditmir (Mainz 05) 5-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals
he faced one of the favourites for the title
Nassim got off to a better start and took an early 1-0 lead
but failed to capitalise on further opportunities to extend his advantage
Levi Finn turned the game around with three goals before halftime
The Leipzig native later became German individual champion
but Nassim could still be extremely proud: He presented the champion with one of his toughest challenges and thus crowned a strong season for SV Darmstadt 98 in individual and team competitions on the virtual pitch
After last week’s spectacular 4-3 victory in Bickenbach
the „second second team“ followed up on Sunday (April 27th) with a 5-2 away victory against SV Croatia Griesheim II
were not fazed: they turned the game around before the break and went into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead
The „second second team“ continued to press after the break
A double strike in the 58th and 59th minutes gave them a comfortable 4-1 lead
Griesheim managed to narrow the score to 5-2 shortly before the final whistle (85th minute)
the team maintains its second-place finish in the Kreisliga C and remains firmly in the race for promotion
The next important game is on Sunday (04.05/13.00) away at RSV Germania Pfungstadt II
You can find an overview of the upcoming matches of the Lilien fan team here:
The U19s of SV Darmstadt 98 have made an impressive comeback: After two defeats in a row
the young Lilies vented their frustrations on Wednesday evening (23 April) with a 5-0 away win against VfL Kassel – and thus comfortably advanced to the semi-finals of the U19 Hessen Cup
The team showed a strong response from the start: they set the course for victory with an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute
the Lilies added two more goals: in the 27th and 31st minutes they made it 2-0 and 3-0 – which practically decided the game
the lilies did not let up and continued to play with great enthusiasm
before they made it 5-0 in the 75th minute
The winner of the match between FV Biebrich 02 and 1
FC-TSG Königstein awaits in the semifinals
The Lilies‘ U17 team had a bye and will next face SV Gonsenheim in the DFB Youth League on Sunday (May 4th at 11am)
Darmstadt’s record goalkeeper Dieter Rudolf celebrates his 73rd birthday on Thursday (May 1st)
Rudolf made 344 appearances for SV 98 – only Edwin Westenberger has more appearances for the Lilies
The former goalkeeper wore the Lily for ten years between 1974 and 1984
He began his career at Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth team in 1974 before moving to SV 98 in southern Hesse
a team he would remain loyal to for a decade
Rudolf was also one of the „after-work professionals“ in 1978
he and his team won second division titles and were promoted to the Bundesliga
But that wasn’t his only promotion: In the 1980/81 season
Rudolf again won second division titles with Darmstadt
the record holder fractured his lumbar vertebrae and was almost paralyzed from the waist down
and played for the Lilies for two more years before ending his career at 1
We wish our record-breaking goalkeeper a happy birthday

Although the blue and whites demonstrated their ability to stage comebacks twice on Sunday (May 4)
they were defeated shortly before the final whistle due to a late goal
This decisive result was displayed on the scoreboard at the Merck Stadium after the final whistle
SV 98 finally suffered a decisive defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday afternoon (May 3)
The decisive factor in the defeat in a largely evenly matched game was two set pieces
which HSV used to score their first two goals
we look back at a match that could have taken a different direction

Darmstadt is playing home against Karlsruher SC at Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor on Fri
FC Köln's team ahead of the Darmstadt tie was Rasmus Carstensen stepping in at right-back for Max Finkgräfe.
Florian Kohfeldt made one change as Sergio López came in for Guillermo Bueno in defence.
Starting for the first time in seven months
Carstensen was shaky to begin with as Killian Corredor was allowed plenty of space on his side
Darmstadt showed their early spurts of pressure as Isac Lidberg narrowly dragged a shot wide of the post.
just two minutes later Fraser Hornby finished a relatively simple chance in the bottom corner to put the Lillies 1-0 up
With the away side putting on more pressure
they almost equalised through Timo Hübers just on the half hour mark.
the equaliser came through a Tim Lemperle tap-in from a Linton Maina cross
the score did not last long at all as Darmstadt responded in the 40th with Hornby's second after Lidberg set him up.
Köln never really got going and were stifled by the efficiency of Darmstadt's scoring.
a poorly positioned high defensive line for Köln allowed Darmstadt to counter effectively and Isac Lidberg finally got his goal.
Despite a double substitution in bringing on Jan Thielmann and Dominique Heintz
Köln's defence remained shaky as ever as their high line got caught out once again as Philipp Förster netted the Lillies' fourth
Köln enjoyed individual dribbles by Denis Huseinbašić and Linton Maina around the opponent's box but this was to no avail.
one last dagger was sent through the heart of Gerhard Struber's side as Darmstadt centre half Aleksandar Vukotić netted from a free-kick.
This result means that Gerhard Struber is in even more pressure for his job as coach of Köln and it also distances Köln further from the conversation for promotion.
this win signals the start of a new era under Florian Kohfeldt and provides them a two-point cushion out of the bottom three

Merlin Polzin could actually still be standing in the fan section today – the 34-year-old, who is now the youngest head coach in the 2. Bundesliga, is so down-to-earth and approachable on the sidelines of Hamburger SV. Boastful appearances? None. Polzin comes from the Hamburg district of Bramfeld; he hasn’t forgotten his roots – and getting carried away wouldn’t suit him anyway.
His success proves him right: Under Polzin, HSV is currently second in the 2. Bundesliga and – as far as promotion is concerned – has everything in its own hands. But Polzin is never just concerned with quick success or the glamour of a position: personal development, team chemistry, and genuine conviction are paramount for him. The right connection with the coaching staff, the team, and the fans – that’s what he relies on.
The idea that a young, local player could lead HSV back to the top flight after seven years in the second division is almost beyond compare in football romanticism. And Polzin firmly believes in it: „The big goal is paramount. We’re moving in the same direction together – there’s no left or right,“ he says.
Today, his focus is different. Faith plays a central role in Selke’s life. „I still own these things, but they no longer own me. I used to define myself through material values; today, I define myself through Jesus,“ he says. His life story is marked by rise and change: Growing up in financially difficult circumstances, football opened the door to a better life for him.
We Lilies – Together for Nature Conservation! This was the motto of the 6th Clean-Up Day organised by SV Darmstadt 98 and the Krombacher Brewery last Sunday (May 4). Because carelessly discarded garbage, waste, and litter pose a major environmental problem, around 90 Lilies fans gathered in front of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Together, they set out to keep the Bölle and the surrounding region clean.
A bitter afternoon and defeat for the SV Darmstadt 98 U21 team. The young Lilies lost 3-2 to SC 1960 Hanau on matchday 32 of the Lotto Hessenliga. Although the blue and whites demonstrated their ability to stage comebacks twice on Sunday (May 4), they were defeated shortly before the final whistle due to a late goal. You can read the match report here.
A 4 -0 defeat. This decisive result was displayed on the scoreboard at the Merck Stadium after the final whistle. After four consecutive home wins, SV 98 finally suffered a decisive defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday afternoon (May 3). The decisive factor in the defeat in a largely evenly matched game was two set pieces, which HSV used to score their first two goals. In our analysis, we look back at a match that could have taken a different direction, especially in the opening stages.
No points for SV Darmstadt 98 at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. The Lilies appeared to be at least on par with the current 2. Merck will invest more than €300m ($321m) in the project
The investment is part of a broader €1.5bn ($1.6bn) investment programme at the Darmstadt site by 2025
The construction of the research centre officially began in April 2024
following the completion of the feasibility study in 2022
The facility is expected to begin operations in 2027 and can accommodate approximately 550 employees
The advanced research centre will be situated at the Merck Firmenzentrale on Frankfurter Street 250 in Darmstadt
The new research building will be built facing the city centre within a central research and development (R&D) campus at Merck Group’s headquarters
The campus is located along an area called the Innovation Mile, whose southern end is marked by Merck’s Innovation Center at Emanuel-Merck-Platz
The Darmstadt site is among Merck’s most critical centres for life science R&D
with an estimated one-fifth of the life science business sector’s sales from new products forecasted to originate from this location over the next decade
The new centre will have an area of 18,000m² (193,750ft²)
It will encompass a gross floor area of 32,000m² (344,445ft²) with a total of six floors above ground and two subterranean levels
It will include 7,500m² (80,729ft²) office and communication spaces

With the handover of 10 Mercedes eCitaro electric buses on last Wednesday
24 eCitaro buses (eleven solo and 13 articulated buses), ordered in October 2020, were already deployed in 2021.
The vehicles were handed over by Rüdiger Kappel, Head of Sales Public Transport Germany at Daimler Buses, and André Herrmann, Sales Public Transport Hessen at Daimler Buses, to HEAG mobilo Managing Directors Johannes Gregor and Arne Rath with the symbolic presentation of a charging plug at the Böllenfalltor depot.
The new eCitaro is equipped with the NMC3 battery generation. This means that the eCitaro articulated bus, with its seven installed battery packs, achieves a total capacity of 686 kWh and a range of around 220 kilometres, Daimler Buses states. The vehicles are charged in the depot via plugs. The charging sockets are located on the right and left near the front axle.
The electric drive aside, HEAG mobilo attaches particular importance to safety and equipment. In addition to a reversing camera, a large driver protection window and Active Preventive Brake Assist, all vehicles are also equipped with Sideguard Assist, a turning assistant that supports the driver in critical turning situations. In addition, the interior of the eCitaro is fully video monitored with six cameras.
The equipment is completed by two special-purpose areas with wheelchair support surfaces and integrated mother/child seats, as well as double USB charging ports distributed in the side walls and two ultra-wide displays in 29-inch 32:9 format for the Infotainment range.
Like all buses from Daimler Buses, the new eCitaro from HEAG mobilo are equipped as standard with the Bus Data Center as an interface to the digital services from Omniplus. The Darmstadt-based company uses the Omniplus On Uptime pro service, for example, to improve the availability of the fleet.
