already preparing to disrupt the opening of Uniper SE’s Datteln-4 plant in June and could turn the utility into the latest flash point in Germany’s increasingly fractious debate about the fossil fuel that still generates about a third of the country’s electricity The conflict could threaten Chancellor Angela Merkel’s climate legacy as German emission targets lag following a decade of record renewable energy investments Home » ‘Baltic Sentry’ demonstrates NATO MCM core role in countering CUI threats Initiated on 13 January 2025, ‘Baltic Sentry’ is building maritime surveillance and presence activity to deter rogue actor threats to the Baltic Sea’s CUI network Two NATO task groups – Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) and Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) – sit centrally within this activity These standing naval forces (SNFs) are adding more ships to their ‘orders of battle’ alongside working with NATO navies’ national task groups and individual ships national and regional maritime operations centres (MOCs) to strengthen maritime surveillance and deterrence to meet mission aims ‘Baltic Sentry’ will deter CUI threats by enhancing surveillance capacity and effect from seabed to space with the surveillance coverage focused on non-routine shipping activity on the sea’s surface and change detection around CUI on the seabed “SNMCMG1 has been tasked within ‘Baltic Sentry’ to build a picture of what is happening not only under the surface but also … on the surface,” Commander Erik Kockx a Belgian Navy officer posted as Commander (COM) SNMCMG1 the Royal Netherlands Navy survey vessel HNLMS Luymes during an at-sea visit in the Gulf of Finland on 20 January SNMCMG1 includes ships and their equipment and MCM experts such as explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) divers and at-sea command staff personnel Cdr Kockx underlined the importance of the ships themselves in meeting the ‘Baltic Sentry’ surveillance and deterrence mission requirements “The most important assets are the ships that are present on the surface of the water sending out a very clear message that anything that will be undertaken in this region will be seen.” “We are the CCTVs of the seas,” Cdr Kockx added “We are present in the Baltic Sea region to monitor what is happening Talking to Naval News onboard FGS Datteln – the German Navy Frankenthal-class coastal mine-hunting vessel which is deployed with SNMCMG1 for the first half of 2025 – the ship’s commanding officer Commander Marcus Fiene underlined an MCM vessel’s (MCMV’s) contribution to surveillance activity like ‘Baltic Sentry’ looking at who’s moving around and who’s crossing the Baltic and looking especially for suspicious behaviour of any ships,” Cdr Fiene explained we would also be able to conduct a survey of the seabed looking for CUI to see if something has happened Underlining the regional MCM expertise the German Navy and other Baltic NATO navies bring Cdr Fiene said “We are specialists in seabed warfare checking the seabed for any objects whether they are mine-like objects or other Cdr Fiene said NATO assets already possess a good picture of the CUI network with this picture mapped on the ships’ electronic sea charts Such data can be enhanced with knowledge shared by member state countries As regards how an MCMV conducts ‘change detection’ surveillance at a CUI site Sometimes it might be difficult to find a cable we are able – especially with our SeaFox MCM drone which is equipped with a camera – to look at certain positions to check if there is any damage.” Datteln is carrying two types of Atlas Elektronik SeaFox remotely operated vehicle (ROV) – the ‘I’ (surveillance) and ‘C’ (disposal) variants The ROVs are operated using a 1,000-metre-long fibre-optic cable with the imagery collected via the onboard camera fed back along the same cable to the ship for display on a dedicated console in the combat information centre (CIC) The image quality presented is good enough to enable operators in the CIC to identify objects on the seabed Cdr Fiene also underlined the wider contribution that building an accurate surveillance picture brings for regional maritime security including reducing risk of incidents and ensuring freedom of navigation Discussing an MCMV’s role and impact in building this picture including surveillance of ‘shadow fleet’ shipping Cdr Fiene said “Our contribution to freedom of navigation is that we’re getting a picture about ships going around here and especially that some of these ships moving around here are not in a safe condition.” Monitoring such shipping from a maritime safety perspective enables NATO forces to inform the respective local countries the assembled NATO forces add layers of surveillance presence “The enhanced vigilance activities taking place under ‘Baltic Sentry’ [aim] to create a picture of what is happening in Baltic Sea area.” This includes the two SNFs plus other contributions from different NATO member states (regional and otherwise) “All those means together make a very diverse set of sensors present in this region and we are combining them in an optimal way to reach the best results possible,” said Cdr Kockx “I am convinced that with the layers we are covering the Baltic Sea area with it will be very much covered and we will know very well what is happening in this area,” Cdr Kockx continued adding that such coverage reduces the capacity for rogue actors to deny involvement SNMCMG1 currently includes two more mine-hunting vessels the French Navy Éridan (Tripartite)-class ship FS Croix du Sud and the Estonian Navy’s Admiral Cowan-class ship ENS Sakala ‘Baltic Sentry’ was established following a series of incidents between October 2023 and December 2024 in which cables and pipelines were damaged at different locations across the Baltic Rogue actor ‘shadow fleet’ ships have been a focus of investigations into the potential cause of each incident markets news at your fingertips with a Bloomberg.com subscription operators will be compensated for early switch-offs Germany will pay its utility companies billions of euros to speed up the shutdown of their coal-fired power plants as part of the country’s efforts to fight climate crisis The agreement reached between federal ministers and representatives of four coalmining states removes a key hurdle in Germany’s plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades Together with imported bituminous – or black – coal it provides about a third of Germany’s electricity needs but is also responsible for a big share of the country’s carbon emissions said that operators of heavily polluting coal-fired power plants in western Germany will receive €2.6bn (£2.2bn) in compensation for switching them off early while €1.75bn will go to those with plants in the east or nearly a third of its current workforce by 2030 as the country phases out brown coal as an energy source It said the compensation offered was less than the €3.5bn hit it estimated it would take even excluding the expected loss of profits the deal pushed up RWE’s share price by 2% The compensation for the utilities is on top of €40bn that the government has already promised to coalmining regions to soften the economic blow of abandoning the fossil fuel The government said reviews will be carried out in 2026 and 2029 to determine whether Germany can exit coal-fired electricity generation in 2035 “What we have here is a good agreement for climate protection because it makes clear that we mean it seriously,” the economy minister Peter Altmaier said Environmental campaigners criticised the decision noting that the agreement will still mean a new coal-fired plant – Datteln 4 – goes online this year and allow for the expansion of the Garzweiler opencast mine in western Germany although a nearby forest that has been the target of long-running protests will be spared millions of people are demonstrating for climate protection and the German government is clearing the way for a new coal power plant,” said Martin Kaiser the managing director of Greenpeace Germany “Nothing shows more clearly than Datteln 4 that this government can’t find an answer to the climate crisis “Chancellor [Angela] Merkel has missed a chance today to provide companies with long-term planning safety and to send a signal that Germany is reacting appropriately to the climate crisis.” who heads the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry said a key question is how the electricity currently coming from coal-fired power plants will be replaced The government has set a target of generating 65% of Germany’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030 acknowledged that Germany will need a “massive expansion of wind and solar energy” as the country is also in the process of exiting atomic power The last nuclear reactor is set to go offline at the end of 2022 “We are the first country that is exiting nuclear and coal power on a binding basis and this is an important international signal that we are sending,” she said of Thursday’s agreement The head of Germany’s main industrial lobby group urged the government not to wait until 2026 – three years after the shutdown of the last nuclear plant – to review the measures said that while there would less “excess production” in Germany in the future “we are very sure that we can ensure sufficient electricity supply for business but also for private consumers” Uniper is moving forward with its transformation and the further decarbonization of its portfolio In view of the public debate about Germany’s phaseout of coal-fired power generation Uniper decided to lead by example and to make a significant contribution to the achievement of the country’s carbon reduction targets Uniper presented an ambitious shutdown plan for its hard-coal-fired power plants in Germany Following constructive discussions with the Federal Government and in the context of the draft law on the phasing out of coal-fired power generation in Germany (‘coal exit’) Uniper wants to shut down about 1,500 megawatts of hard-coal capacity – three generating units at Scholven power station in Gelsenkirchen plus Wilhelmshaven power station – by year-end 2022 Uniper plans to shut down another 1,400 megawatts at Staudinger and Heyden power stations by 2025 at the latest Uniper had already withdrawn just over 2,400 megawatts at Datteln these shutdowns will yield annual carbon savings of up to 18 million metric tons The last remaining coal-fired power plant in the Uniper portfolio in Germany will be the Datteln 4 power plant which is presently connected to the electricity grid undergoing final testing. It is one of the most modern coal power plants and part of Uniper’s strategy to reduce the company’s CO2 emissions as a result of the voluntary planned shutdowns and the operation of Datteln 4 Uniper targets to further reduce its CO2 emissions by up to 40% whilst still maintaining security of supply to the customers and communities that it serves Uniper is developing forward-looking schemes for the power stations slated for closure The schemes will be geared toward tomorrow’s energy world and offer long-term employment prospects They include plans and considerations to build and operate new gas-fired combined-heat-and-power plants that produce district heating to design innovative solutions for providing nearby industrial customers with steam and to develop solutions that produce hydrogen on an industrial scale “Our objective is to make a proactive and constructive contribution to the achievement of carbon reduction targets and to the swift and sustainable phaseout of coal-fired power generation in Germany We want to send a signal that the discussions of recent years have now led to action we also want to contribute to increasing social acceptance of the ‘how’ of the coal phase-out in Germany we’re setting Uniper on a decisive course for the future: our actions will provide planning security to our employees at the facilities affected and give our company the financial and structural flexibility to focus on important sustainable projects for the future,” said Andreas Schierenbeck “Our announcements will end a long period of uncertainty for our employees who have watched this process unfold over the previous months their workers councils and local authorities to ensure the best future for the affected sites and our employees The announcements also mark a turning point for Uniper as we move towards a lower carbon future I’m very confident that these announced changes will help propel and shape the transformation of the country’s energy system,” David Bryson Uniper is a leading international energy company with activities in more than 40 countries and around 11,000 employees globally Its business is the secure provision of energy and related services Its main activities include power generation in Europe and Russia as well as global energy trading The company is headquartered in Düsseldorf ABB has delivered the world’s most powerful rail frequency converter for German utility E.ON The installation at the Datteln railway hub in the north west of the country can supply up to 413 MW to feed DB Energie’s traction power supply ABB has delivered the rail static frequency converter (SFC) system as part of a turnkey package that includes design installation and commissioning alongside other key components such as transformers E.ON ordered the converter station as part of its project to replace a time-served 303 MW coal- fired power station that was built in the 1960s as a dedicated power generation asset to supply railway traction power The system has the role of converting electricity from the three-phase high-voltage grid at a frequency of 50 Hz to the 16.7 Hz required by the single-phase 110 kV Deutsche Bahn traction supply E.ON specified the power converter system at a rating of 413 MW to meet growing demand This makes the system the largest of its kind and compares with most installed systems which have power capacity in the region of 15 to 30 MW such as the inverter station Wimmis for the Swiss Lötschberg railway tunnel Project Manager at ABB Switzerland said: “The plant in Datteln is now a quantum leap for us Thanks to continuous improvements in power electronics and a standardized we can now convert higher power more efficiently." ABB’s solution is based on state-of-the-art power electronics with four identical converter blocks of 103 MW This arrangement was chosen so that maintenance work can be carried out on one of the converter blocks without compromising the conversion capacity of the entire plant the converter delivers exceptionally high levels of system availability and reliability High efficiency is guaranteed by the Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor (IGCT) power electronics semiconductor elements They ensure that no additional line filters are required to compensate for voltage fluctuations and so help to maintain the required grid stability at all times SFCs are used on the electrical grid to interconnect power networks operating at incompatible frequencies – for example the shore-to-ship power connections for a cruise ship which operates at 60 Hz and needs to connect to the shore-side network running at 50 Hz SFCs can also be used to interconnect neighbouring distribution grids ABB installed a 20 MW unit for Western Power Distribution to balance voltage and power flows through two otherwise incompatible 33 kV networks The installation has unlockedaround 344 MW of power capacity locally avoiding the need for a costly upgrade to the transmission grid ABB has been providing SFC technology for railway interconnections since 1994 Its medium- voltage rail SFC solution allows the connection of three-phase public grids to single-phase railway power grids at frequencies of 16.7 The SFC acts as a source of voltage and reactive power but also ensures a smooth transition from interconnected system operation to island mode in case of disturbances on the grid It also ensures grid code compliance without the need to install line filters the SFC can act as the sole power supply to an isolated section of the railway and subsequently re-synchronise with the rest of the railway traction grid after the disturbance has been cleared ABB announced a contract with Network Rail to supply a similar system to upgrade the power supply for the East Coast Mainline With new InterCity Express trains due to start running on the line Network Rail recognised the need to reinforce its power supply to supply both the main track and Hitachi’s new maintenance depot in Doncaster The new trains will require around three times more power than is currently provided by the existing supply The conventional solution would be to build a new high-voltage grid connection this would be costly and would require a lengthy lead time Network Rail called on ABB to deliver a solution based on an SFC to adapt the feed from Northern Powergrid’s local distribution network Taking this approach will deliver an estimated total cost saving of around 60 percent compared with building a new high voltage substation ABB's website uses cookies. million readers pay to read the Financial Times LONDON – The owners of three new Dutch coal power plants in the Netherlands are nursing around €4 billion in losses as a result of market headwinds and a mandated coal phaseout has decided to exit coal power in the country hold out for compensation which will delay a more strategic The Netherlands is an extreme example of the dilemma facing European utilities that have clung to coal generation despite warning signs from falling power prices competition with renewables and climate policies RWE, Uniper and Engie, were especially late recognising these warnings in the Netherlands, commissioning three brand new coal power plants in 2015, as noted by IEEFA in its report, The Dutch Coal Mistake in 2016 IEEFA estimates that they have now collectively written off more than €4 billion of value, crippled by major challenges including falling renewable energy costs and rising carbon prices, compounded by the Dutch government’s announcement last year of a coal phaseout by the end of 2029 companies value their assets according to expected cash flows over their lifetime the company is forced to write down the value of the asset and register the difference as an impairment loss Uniper impairments worth over €4 billion Going forward, only Engie has bitten the bullet, making a clean break which has seen the French utility write down to almost zero the value of its 800-megawatt (MW) Rotterdam power plant, preparing for a deeply discounted sale that includes three German coal power plants RWE and Uniper are holding on to their assets largely focused on opportunities for compensation RWE IS AIMING FOR SUBSIDIES TO CONVERT ITS 1,600MW EEMSHAVEN POWER PLANT FULLY TO BURN BIOMASS OR ELSE RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR EARLY CLOSURE The company is threatening the Dutch government with legal action if it fails to receive compensation “for the financial disadvantages that we would suffer as a result of the planned coal phaseout.” The approach mirrors RWE’s compensation strategy in Germany a country which also recently supported a coal phaseout The fate of Uniper’s 1,070MW Maasvlakte 3 power plant in the Netherlands is in limbo Uniper remains intent on completing the construction of a new 1,100MW coal power plant in Germany and plans to invest further significant amounts before commissioning the power plant next year The company has already made impairments of €500 million Compensation aimed at eking out shareholder value at taxpayer expense Uniper views compensation for closure as an important future source of value even as it completes construction of Datteln 4 saying: “The project to replace the boiler walls continues with undiminished speed that the German government could ask Uniper as part of the recommended political discussions to consider not putting Datteln 4 into operation in return for appropriate compensation.” Strategies to continue to build or run coal power plants in Europe are an attempt to maximise shareholder value at the expense of taxpayers Engie’s discounted sale to Riverstone seems to indicate low expectations for a generous payout highlighting the risk that RWE and Uniper’s compensation strategies will fail Such strategies risk diverting scarce financial and intellectual capital away from new SHAREHOLDER AND WIDER SOCIAL NEEDS WOULD BE BEST SERVED BY ACCELERATING THE CLOSURE OF COAL POWER PLANTS Shareholders have an important role to play in pressuring companies to cut their losses One such forum for raising shareholder voices of support for a transition away from coal might be the Climate Action 100+ group, whose members include more than 300 investors managing some $33 trillion in assets, some of whom recently called for a 2030 coal power phaseout in developed countries The time is ripe for companies like RWE and Uniper to exercise sound market judgement and accelerate transitions to renewables Approximate impairments against book In addition to field-fresh carrots for the retail trade the so-called oversized carrots have also been cut into pieces for several years which are then in turn used by processing companies or wholesale companies as an ingredient in ready-to-eat salads or ready-to-eat cuts We supply other residual quantities that are no longer suitable for the fresh market at all to frozen food manufacturers so the bottom line is that everything is recycled We even have a customer who processes carrots into schnapps." Carsten Abenhardt is now the 3rd generation to run the family business The Abenhardt farm looks back on a long tradition in vegetable production and has also been certified organic for 30 years now the company is able to supply the trade with both conventional and organic carrots twelve months a year they also use stored carrots from other growing regions in Germany as well as imported goods from Spain we are tending to focus more on German stored carrots and have therefore expanded our capacity once again so that we can now store 35,000 wooden boxes This has meant that these days we can offer German carrots from July 1 into May." early pumpkin crops could already be harvested on July 20 One starts now successively into the large autumn actions Abenhardt has gradually diversified its range of products in recent years "We have recognized for ourselves that it is difficult to continue growing with carrots alone and we then looked around for possible new crops so that the organic area could hold its own in the future we have focused our capacity primarily on growing organic hokkaido and zucchini Another important reason for this was that the carrot season is traditionally somewhat weaker in the summer which is why customers then lack pallets in transport We can supplement this with zucchini in the summer and Hokkaido later in the fall As soon as the pumpkin season comes to an end we always get our shipping volume covered." Innovations and investmentsIn order to be able to make workflows more efficient and meet the high demands of food retailers in the future innovations and investments are unavoidable we have an autonomous chopping robot in operation and also rely on advanced labeling technology Our organic pumpkins are labeled using gentle laser technology called natural branding while organic zucchinis have been banded two at a time since 2021 Optical sorting on carrots is also something we have in place and plan to expand." Das zielte auf Datteln 4 da kein anderes großes Kohlekraftwerk im Bau ist Warum ist die Bundesregierung dieser Empfehlung nicht gefolgt Laut Bundeswirtschaftsministerium ist das Ja zu Datteln 4 «Ergebnis einer Gesamtabwägung« Bundeswirtschaftsminister Peter Altmaier (CDU) hatte auf die «komplexe Systematik von Entschädigungsleistungen» verwiesen und gesagt durch die Abschaltung älterer Steinkohlekohlekraftwerke könne mehr CO2 eingespart werden Zudem besitze das Kraftwerk eine zentrale Funktion für Wärmeversorgung in der Region Laut Uniper kann Datteln 4 rechnerisch 100 000 Haushalte mit Fernwärme versorgen Was halten die Kritiker von der Argumentation der Regierung Wegen der Abnahmeverträge mit RWE und der Bahn sei mit einer besonders hohen Auslastung des Kraftwerks zu rechnen Dies werde in der Summe zu einem hohen CO2-Ausstoß führen der deutlich über den Einsparungen durch das Abschalten älterer Kraftwerke liegen werde Das Bundeswirtschaftsministerium hat angekündigt das Kohleausstiegsgesetzes solle sicherstellen dass diese Mehremissionen in vollem Umfang ausgeglichen werden Die WELT als ePaper: Die vollständige Ausgabe steht Ihnen bereits am Vorabend zur Verfügung – so sind Sie immer hochaktuell informiert Weitere Informationen https://epaper.welt.de Der Link wurde in die Zwischenablage kopiert Dirk Roßmann: Der neunte Arm des OktopusBastei Lübbe It began as a way to improve relations between Great Britain and the rest of the world in the turbulent years after the Second World War families across the West Midlands have built up lifelong friendships with residents in their communities' 'twin towns' hundreds of miles away while others are borne out of similar industrial heritages or even two places having the same name But they have given people a chance to visit areas they might otherwise never have seen and learn about cultures that were previously a mystery to them One of the longest running in the country is the Willenhall partnership with Drancy on the outskirts of Paris near Paris probably have the least in common of all the twin towns in the Midlands A once thriving industrial heart of the Black Country now struggling with empty shops and unemployment But over the last 55 years the two communities have built up strong links that organisers hope will continue for decades to come Drancy is known for a dark period of its history when the Nazis set up an internment camp for Jews there in the Second World War But civic leaders have since made a concerted effort to move the town forward with modern buildings contrasting with the 19th century art nouveau structures Willenhall: The clock tower in the town's Market Place - Drancy: Memorial for the Jews imprisoned in a Nazi internment camp during the Second World War Willenhall: Lockmaking - Drancy: Engineering – though residents often work outside of the area people from both towns have visited each other's homes and staged sightseeing holidays And a centrepiece of the annual exchanges is an art exhibition in both towns featuring work by their friends from overseas The display has been held at The Crossing at St Paul's for the last 10 years with Willenhall artists' work also being exhibited in Drancy who has been involved in the group for 32 years said the annual holidays abroad were a highlight of the year for many members He said: "You get a great mix of people and you get to see different ways of life and an insight into the way traditional French families live It has given people the opportunity to go on trips they wouldn't normally have gone on." The once-popular children's exchange was scrapped as more families went on foreign holidays themselves but more than 20 people still embark on the annual holidays France is a common location for twin towns as it has relatively easy transport links to England and is not too much of a culture shock for visitors Sandwell was twinned with the Parisian suburb of Le Blanc Mesnil 30 years ago and a series of events are being staged to celebrate the anniversary this year with French residents visiting Sandwell next year Organisers give members the chance to learn French but say it is not essential with twinning association chairman Pat Perry saying: "Part of the fun for some could be to learn about the French language and traditions – it is a fantastic opportunity to make friends with French people." with guest speakers in the winter and outdoor activities such as boules in the summer Mrs Perry said Le Blanc Mesnil was 'very similar' to Sandwell with bustling areas of shops and businesses But there is also rural tranquility with water parks and countryside that can feel a million miles away from the Black Country in the hot summer months The group is looking for new members and Mrs Perry has urged families to broaden their horizons She said: "Exchange visits usually last for five days various excursions and activities are organised and there is also free time to spend with the host families." When civic leaders in Wheaton Aston were looking for a community to twin with they did not have simple transport links in mind Wheaton in Illinois is 3,847 miles – or a 10-hour flight – from South Staffordshire So exchange visits between the two sets of residents are altogether rarer and take much greater planning While it is hard to fathom how some twinning links came to pass it is not hard to see the inspiration behind Wheaton Aston's The South Staffordshire village is paired with Wheaton in Illinois And the connection is not as far-fetched as you might think Wheaton in the US is one of the 25 highest earning cities in the country with the residents proud of its village-like atmosphere despite its 50,000-plus population Situated 25 miles west of Chicago and Lake Michigan Wheaton is also defined by vast expanses of land and the busy train line that runs through it linking it to the country's industrial and economic hubs Wheaton has rapidly expanded since the 1950s although its population growth has slowed down since the early 1990s as the city has become increasingly landlocked It took its name from two brothers who settled there in the 1830s bars and restaurants was banned there until 1985 Wheaton Aston: Shropshire Union Canal - Wheaton There are certainly huge differences between the two Wheatons.Wheaton has a population of more than 50,000 and most people working in nearby Chicago whereas the rural parish including Wheaton Aston Lapley and Stretton is home to less than 3,000 It began in 1990 when villagers Ray and Diana Cowley Since then villagers have communicated with their American 'twins' by letter YouTube videos have also been created and shared Mike Gresk and his wife Kathleen visited the village last month while they were on holiday in England taking tea and cake at St Mary's Church with villagers and have a pub lunch at the Hartley Arms Twinning associations are often more popular in smaller villages than towns or cities – and organisers believe that is because they often have a greater sense of community Kinver's has been one of the most active in the Midlands in recent years with more than 30 people going on exchange trips to Mer in the Loire Valley in France every two years mainly agricultural area have always settled in quickly in Kinver since the partnership was set up 26 years ago Twinning group chairman Heather Pickford said: "They love it – they see Kinver as being typically English with its timber-framed houses and high street "My aim is to encourage families to develop their own links between themselves so they can see their friends at any time of year not just when our trips are organised." The original organisers of the Kinver partnership intended to find a town in Germany but But Cannock community chiefs did opt for Germany after being swayed by the canal network in Datteln which is the scene of a popular boating festival each year culminating in 1996 with spectacular celebrations at the Datteln Kanalfest and the Cannock Carnival to mark the 25th anniversary They may be seen by some as a relic of the past but residents of twin towns say they have been given the chance to discover new cultures and make friends for life Mrs Pickford added: "It is more popular than ever in Kinver and I hope that continues for many years to come." Kinver is often seen as a quintessentially English village and a sanctuary from the built-up towns and cities which lie nearby is also a popular retreat for families wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life With its quaint cottages in the hills contrasting with the ornate chateaux at Chambord and Blois that form part of the Loire world heritage site Mer has become a home from home for many of Kinver's villagers The association was set up in 1987 and more than 25 years later is more active than ever the sandstone caves at Kinver Edge - Mer: River Loire and the castles of Beaumont and Chantecaille Kinver: The Kinver Brewery - Mer: Agriculture and logistics They are more than 520 miles apart but for 34 years strong links have been forged between Cannock and Datteln in Germany The small town on the North Rhine lies at the heart of Germany's canal network with a waterways festival being one of the highlights of the year as boats gather on the junction of four canals The mining heritage common to both towns has formed one of the strongest bonds but other groups have also taken part in regular exchanges While Cannock has suffered from shop closures the number of empty stores has fallen by 25 per cent And Datteln is blessed with a thriving centre full of independent traders Every year members of the twinning groups visit each other's towns to see old friends and introduce new members to the local sights pigeon racing and amateur radio clubs are just some of the organisations to have visited Germany over the years Cannock: Cannock Shopping Centre - Datteln: Canal network Cannock: Automotive parts - Datteln: Tourism The borough of Sandwell is celebrating 30 years of being twinned with Le Blanc Mesnil And organisers say joining the twinning association is a great way to learn about different cultures and make new friends regular exchange visits have been organised where members of the twinning groups stay in each other's homes Le Blanc Mesnil is quieter and more rural than Sandwell built-up areas after a huge revamp over the last 60 years when nearly half of the city was wrecked during the Second World War Crowds of families flock to public water features and swimming pools during the hot summers when temperatures often reach 30°C Its name is interpreted by some as a reference to the houses of Le Blanc-Mesnil which were whitened due to the flour dust coming from the windmills located there in ancient times Sandwell: 309,000 - Le Blanc Mesnil: 51,220 Baggies' home - Le Blanc Mesnil: Town hall Sandwell: Steelwork - Le Blanc Mesnil: Building Der Dattelner Phil Harres hat sich seinen Traum erfüllt und bei Bundesliga-Aufsteiger Holstein Kiel unterschrieben Wie zufrieden sind Sie heute mit Ihrem Besuch auf dattelner-morgenpost.de Wir arbeiten stetig an der Verbesserung von dattelner-morgenpost.de dabei ist Ihre Meinung für uns unverzichtbar Diese Funktion steht nur unseren Abonnenten zur Verfügung 14:38Lesezeit: 3 Min.Bildbeschreibung ausklappenDie Baustelle in DattelndpaDas Steinkohlekraftwerk in Datteln darf doch noch ans Netz Für das Stilllegen älterer Kraftwerke soll es derweil Prämien geben denen bereits eine immissionsschutzrechtliche Genehmigung erteilt worden ist soll das Verbot des Neubaus von Stein- und Braunkohleanlagen demnach nicht gelten der vor dem am kommenden Montag geplanten Kabinettsbeschluss noch mit den übrigen Ressorts abgestimmt werden muss TeilenVerschenken Merken Drucken Anhören Zur Startseite Kurse und Finanzdaten zum Artikel: Der Entwickler von ChatGPT gibt Pläne für eine radikale Veränderung seiner Struktur auf Mittelständische Unternehmen sind besorgt dass die Europäische Union Trumps Zollpolitik kontert Ein Fünftel der Befragten sehen Amerika dennoch weiter als strategische Zielregion Der SPD-Politiker Carsten Schneider ist in der schwarz-roten Koalition der neue starke Mann für die Klimapolitik Der bisherige Ostbeauftragte genießt weithin Respekt Und er hat einen alten Haudegen an seiner Seite.
