A rezoning initiated by City Council on two properties that local nonprofit Foster Village plans to use for office space will come back with dueling recommendations from the Planning Department and the Zoning and Platting Commission after the latter voted down the former’s and submitted its own during a special called meeting on Feb
Council initiated the zoning change to support “a resource center that will provide a safe, communal space for foster families and create a nurturing environment where children and caregivers can access essential resources and feel supported during their journey through the foster care system,” according to a resolution passed in September
The properties in question are at 10505 and 10545 Dessau Road and are currently zoned SF-2 (Single Family-2) and SF-6-CO (Single-Family-6-Conditional Overlay)
The rezoning proposed by the planning department would change both to GO
a commercial district type intended to allow for medium-scale office use and development
After roughly a half hour of discussion during the meeting
commissioners voted that recommendation down 8-1
with commission chair Hank Smith abstaining and commissioner Taylor Major the lone “yea” vote
The commission then approved its own recommendation of NO
the lowest-intensity office zoning district
Foster Village
a local 501(c)3 registered nonprofit that serves foster youth and parents in the Austin area
a lawyer who said he represents both the nonprofit and the owners
Gomez said the nonprofit is leasing the land and has no immediate plans to buy or substantially redevelop the properties
though an option to buy is included in its lease with the owners
who he described as supporters and benefactors of the nonprofit
“The property owner actually offered up the tract because he was aware that we had just outgrown our resource centers and we really need to expand to a larger area,” he said
He continued that the nonprofit currently plans to use an existing single-family home at 10545 Dessau Road for the new office
which would make use of the property as an office illegal
who presented the Planning Department’s recommendation
said that the department had weighed multiple factors in recommending GO zoning
and its proximity to the Cameron Road/Dessau activity corridor within the Imagine Austin plan
Responding to commissioners’ questions about nearby single-family zoning
Tomko reiterated that the department was weighing future plans for the area alongside the current situation on Dessau
“Some of the neighborhoods to the south are substantially more dense than what’s been developed there historically
so the corridor is kind of shifting in that direction to be more intense,” Tomko said
Commissioner Lonny Stern questioned staff’s assessment of nearby roadways and transit
and pulled up a Google Maps image of a stretch of Dessau Road near to the property which he characterized as a bridge and called the location a “donut hole” lacking transit options
“I thought I would be opposed to an office being in this location
but then when I saw what it was for I felt differently,” Stern said
this is not the best location for who you’re trying to serve.”
Vice chair Betsy Greenberg raised the potential for land value increases that an upzoning to GO might spur
noting that the property had been previously listed for sale at $3.8 million under its current zoning
“It’s just going to make the property more expensive for the nonprofit.”
Gomez responded that while the land might become more expensive
environmental regulations on the properties
which are situated near Walnut Creek in the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone
would keep price increases down by limiting the potential for future redevelopment
we need a space we can operate an office in,” Gomez said
and this is just about the best shot we have.”

on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Oury Jalloh’s death
several hundred people took to the streets of the East German city of Dessau
a 35 year old man from Sierra Leone and the father of a two-year-old son
was chained hand and foot and burnt to death in a cell at the Dessau-Rosslau police station on January 7
the German state still refuses to clarify the circumstances of his death and hold to account those responsible
Demonstrators who marched from the police station in Dessau-Rosslau to the city courthouse last week carried signs and banners remembering not only Jalloh
but also the many other victims of police violence in Germany
One banner denounced the police murder of Mouhamed Lamine Dramé
a youth who was killed in Dortmund two and a half years ago
the Dortmund Regional Court acquitted all five police officers involved in his death
The official version of Jalloh’s death remains that he killed himself
Although he was chained hand and foot to a cell bed
it is claimed he managed to fish a lighter out of his pocket
tear a hole in a flame-retardant mattress and set it and himself completely ablaze in just 20 minutes
it has already been refuted multiple times
including by professional investigators and international experts
This is also the conclusion reached in a new six-part Crime Time series on Germany’s ARD TV channel
The filmmakers refrained from presenting a so-called “balanced picture” repeating the cynical comments of the police station manager Hanno Schulz
the police officers dealing with Jalloh were “two very calm
reserved representatives.” Schulz declared there had “to be an end sometime” with the investigations
the ARD film makes the course of events sufficiently clear
Jalloh approached two women on the street saying he wanted to make a phone call
Two police officers then arrived and arrested Jalloh
who had been drinking and resisted his arrest
He was taken by force to the police station and a short time later lay severely injured on a mattress in cell 5
at this point his nasal bone and several ribs were broken
his eardrum had burst and he had suffered a skull fracture
After the police officers left Jalloh in his injured state
the fire alarm went off in cell 5 of the police station
The police chief on duty responded by switching off the alarm twice
thick black smoke was coming out of the cell
The official investigations were conducted extremely carelessly; a video team destroyed recordings from the scene of the crime
The public prosecutor’s office refused to have the body X-rayed and it was left to Jalloh’s friends to arrange this later at their own expense in order to determine his injuries
Original charges of “involuntary manslaughter” ended in an acquittal of all police officers because the witnesses for the prosecution changed their testimony retrospectively and all of the police kept silent
A charred lighter that turned up in the evidence from the cell cannot have come from the scene of the crime
This fact was established by later investigations by Jalloh supporters
It emerged that two other men had already died at the same police station before Jalloh and the investigations into these deaths had not yet been completed in January 2005
This raises the question if there was an attempt to cover up multiple police murders
additional private and official fire tests have clearly shown that the fire that took place in cell 5 could not have started without an accelerant
The research group Forensic Architecture (FA) reconstructed the course of events
They concluded that such a fire requires the draft of an open door
the senior public prosecutor in Dessau finally opened a murder investigation
the case was taken away from him and handed over to another public prosecutor in Halle
When politicians in the state parliament asked questions and demanded clarification
the minister of justice lied to parliament about the state of the investigation
the public prosecutor’s office officially closed the investigation
When Oury’s brother Saliou Jalloh turned to the Higher Regional Court in Naumburg in 2019
Saliou Jalloh took the case to the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe
this court also closed the file on the murder in cell 5
Its main argument was that the termination of the investigation by the Higher Regional Court of Naumburg did not violate the constitution
an attempt to file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights also failed; the complaint was rejected on the grounds of a formal error
judiciary and politicians have denied that Oury Jalloh could not have set himself on fire under any circumstances
the absurd version of suicide is accepted and established in the courtrooms of Dessau
and most recently in Karlsruhe and The Hague
It has been declared that the case is legally closed in Germany
But as the Initiative in Memory of Oury Jalloh correctly writes in its press release
the facts speak “a clear language: this was murder
the crime of murder is not subject to time limits
“The fight for clarification and justice will continue until the Oury Jalloh affair has been resolved and the perpetrators held to account!” Saliou Diallo
described last week’s rally in Dessau as another “anniversary of the fight for the truth.”
The years of cover-ups and denials by the German judiciary in this and other cases represents a serious warning
including the courts and all the state organs of violence
is not to focus on education and mutual understanding
Tragic attacks on migrants such as those in Solingen
Mannheim and most recently Magdeburg are being used as an excuse to arm the police and intensify agitation against refugees and migrants
party leader Alice Weidel is now openly and loudly raising the far right slogan of ‘remigration’—but such a policy is not restricted to the AfD
All of the main parliamentary parties—the Social Democratic Party
Left Party and Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance—are pursuing similar policies
even though (or precisely because) they are involved in an election campaign
Such policies are directed principally against the working class
which is facing major struggles in the face of attacks on its jobs
international perspective can ultimately ensure genuine justice for the victims of police violence

Where is the city center here?At a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a place to live in large citiessmaller towns are confronted with the opposite problem: Emptiness
this phenomenon begins in the core of city centers
the reality of ageing and out-migration is rapidly coming to a head
innovative young projects are already looking for alternatives to meet this challenge
This is also the case in Dessau with the Young City Makers research project
Students from the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences' Departments of Design and Architecture have been conducting action research for two years to find out how vacant properties in Dessau-Rosslau's city center can be sustainably revitalized
three vacant spaces were transformed into: an urban living room
they show how liveliness and community can be fueled by involving urban society and through design.can be fueled by design

slowcore trio Codeine went to Harold Dessau Recording studio in New York City in 1992
When Codeine released the Frigid Stars LP in 1990, the New York City band single-handedly invented what would later — somewhat cloyingly — become known as "slowcore." Predating influential albums by kindred spirits Low and Bedhead by almost half a decade
but immense songs supported lyrics that were like a disturbingly pure embodiment of depression
There was quite simply nothing else like it
is akin to reliving a memory I can no longer fully access: I know all the words and chords
Recorded in June 1992 at Harold Dessau Recording studio in New York City
the album consists almost entirely of alternate versions of songs that were later rerecorded
"Jr." and "Realize" — later released on the Barely Real EP — are beautiful but somewhat faithful reproductions
while the songs that would eventually end up on The White Birch are startlingly different
Dessau is much more natural and noisy than the stark
hyper-precise versions later recorded with Doug Scharin
the powerhouse drummer who replaced Chris Brokaw
Originally intended as the band's sophomore effort
Dessau was recorded at a particularly fraught moment when bassist/vocalist Stephen Immerwahr seemed to be in personal crisis
Given the band's depressive lyrical content and Immerwahr's recollection of the events surrounding the Dessau recording — including a "high-pitched
radio frequency-like noise on all my vocal tracks" that no one else could hear — one could conclude that he was experiencing something wildly different from the rest of the band
And despite guitarist John Engle and Brokaw's confidence that it was their best work
sickening fear that what I wanted us to achieve was beyond our reach."
But it was this unashamed expression of sadness and isolation that resonated so strongly with me as a depressed teen
Codeine spent a summer in my hometown of Louisville
at an all-day concert with around a dozen bands on the bill
the show veered hilariously off schedule; Codeine eventually took the stage at one in the morning
The indie-rock band's "sensitive and sincere" music echoed throughout the surreal environs of an enormous
almost empty 1,500-capacity shell of a building that had previously served as a laser tag arena
Engle broke strings on both of his guitars early in the set and then borrowed a guitar from headliner Crain
Everyone on stage and in the audience was in disbelief at the absurdity of it all
and while I can still picture it in my mind
the memories have softened and my mental image of the show is now hazy and my memory likely at least a little unreliable
While my teenage loneliness and pain has mostly subsided
hearing Codeine always snaps me back to that place
I'm left with the feeling that I saw a ghost; Dessau feels like that ghost is in my living room

Pflugerville ISD is considering closing Dessau Elementary as part of an effort to cut costs in the face of a multimillion-dollar budget deficit
19 that the district was researching the impact of closing one to two elementary schools and that it was choosing between three campuses: Dessau
Killian sent families an email saying that PfISD had whittled down the potential closures to one school
Killian said the district was no longer looking at closing Parmer Lane and River Oaks next year
the goal is to create a campus and parent-led campaign aimed at increasing enrollment
“A dedicated group of advocates has offered to partner with us to explore recruitment and retention options,” he wrote
“We are grateful for this partnership and look forward to seeing what we can do together to keep ROES and PLES thriving.”
Killian said PfISD was still researching the impact of closing Dessau Elementary for a couple of reasons
Dessau is close to other elementary schools that have space for more students
the campus has struggled academically for several years
“While the district has provided additional funding
we struggle to make adequate progress,” Killian wrote in the email
which means they have a high percentage of students who are considered economically disadvantaged
But Dessau Principal Teyan Allen disagreed with the superintendent’s characterization of her campus
saying it lacked “compassion and thoughtfulness.” Allen spoke out at a PfISD school board meeting on Monday that was rescheduled after last week’s ice storm
“While it is important to be transparent and clear
it is also important to be mindful and respectful,” she said
“I was very disheartened to read details about our school that were not necessary or helpful.”
Allen told trustees that Dessau is more than a campus that has struggled academically
“It is composed of excellent educators and support staff who give more than imaginable
competent and talented students,” she said
“The culture of our campus is one of pride
A handful of Dessau teachers and staff also addressed the school board
who has worked at Dessau in a variety of roles for nine years
She said she knew the board faced a tough decision over how to save money
“What I ask is this: please do not let our amazing campus be reduced to a few sentences about a lack of academic success or viewed as a sore spot in PfISD,” she said
Vargas told KUT that she only learned about the possible closure from the superintendent’s email last week and now she’s considering leaving the district
“I have already started looking at maybe charter schools just because it was heartbreaking not to have learned about what was going on before,” she said
Vargas said it is especially disappointing because her son loves Dessau’s staff
“He’s just starting to get used to his school," Vargas said
"We had a hard time with him adjusting [to] pre-K
She added that she likes Dessau Elementary because it has a bilingual education program
and her son is fluent in both English and Spanish
District officials said if the school board decides to close Dessau
about 100 of the school’s students in pre-K through fourth grade would be rezoned to Pflugerville Elementary
Dessau students would also be rezoned based on where they live
Some students would go to Wieland Elementary
more than 120 of that school’s students would shift to Copperfield Elementary
Superintendent Killian has previously estimated that closing a single elementary campus would save about $2.5 million
But he has repeatedly warned the district will need to make more cuts
especially if it wants to offer raises to teachers and staff
PfISD is looking at cutting programs as well as reducing the amount of time middle and high school teachers have to plan for classes
and closing a school is never a good decision," Killian said
Killian continued to encourage families to reach out to the Texas Legislature to advocate for more public education funding, such as raising per student funding to keep up with inflation. However, he expressed little optimism that lawmakers will use their historic $33 billion budget surplus to help schools
School Board President Vernagene Mott said trustees have hard decisions ahead
The PfISD school board may decide at its Feb. 23 meeting whether to close Dessau Elementary. The district is still accepting feedback on the proposed attendance boundary adjustments here

Between 1919 and 1933 the Bauhaus movement revolutionized architectural and aesthetic thinking and practice in the 20th century
Dessau and Bernau are fundamental representatives of Classical Modernism
directed towards a radical renewal of architecture and design
which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996
originally comprised buildings located in Weimar (Former Art School
the Applied Art School and the Haus Am Horn) and Dessau (Bauhaus Building
The 2017 extension includes the Houses with Balcony Access in Dessau and the ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau as important contributions to the Bauhaus ideas of austere design

revolutionized architectural and aesthetic concepts and practices
The buildings created and decorated by the School’s professors (Henry van de Velde
Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Wassily Kandinsky) launched the Modern Movement
which shaped much of the architecture of the 20th century and beyond
Component parts of the property are the Former Art School
the Applied Art School and the Haus am Horn in Weimar
the group of seven Masters’ Houses and the Houses with Balcony Access in Dessau
The Bauhaus represents the desire to develop a modern architecture using the new materials of the time (reinforced concrete
steel) and construction methods (skeleton construction
the form of the buildings rejects the traditional
the architectural forms – both the subdivided building structure and the individual structural elements – are reduced to their primary
from a composition of interconnecting cubes in suggestive spatial transparency
The Bauhaus was a centre for new ideas and consequently attracted progressive architects and artists
The Bauhaus School has become the symbol of modern architecture
both for its educational theory and its buildings
and is inseparable from the name of Walter Gropius
realized the idea of collective work on a building project within the framework of training in the Bauhaus’s building department
These buildings stand for an architectural quality that derives from the scientifically-based design methodology and the functional-economic design with social objectives
The Bauhaus itself and the other buildings designed by the masters of the Bauhaus are fundamental representatives of Classical Modernism and as such are essential components
Their consistent artistic grandeur is a reminder of the still-uncompleted project for “modernity with a human face“
which sought to use the technical and intellectual resources at its disposal not in a destructive way but to create a living environment worthy of human aspirations
they are important monuments not only for art and culture
but also for the historic ideas of the 20th century
Even though the Bauhaus philosophy of social reform turned out to be little more than wishful thinking
its utopian ideal became reality through the form of its architecture
Its direct accessibility still has the power to fascinate and belongs to the people of all nations as their cultural heritage

Bonvicini explores power structures that shape gender
Created specifically for the Bauhaus Building
her new installation Structural Psychodrama #5 establishes a critical connection to the architecture around it: to the workshop wing
who thus repeatedly become the focus of the art work
invited to perform in front of the mirrors
Handcuffs attached to long chains likewise prompt interaction – but this is not possible
The title Structural Psychodrama #5 refers to psychotherapy
here specifically to the psychodrama action method founded by Jacob Levy Moreno (1889–1974)
Bonvicini too offers visitors a tangible experience of encounters and action in the here and now
The addition of the word “structural” to the title refers to a social dimension of the work that transcends the individual
Bonvicini has produced a series of consecutively numbered works under this name over recent years

the provisional government of the short-lived Free State of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in Germany initiated an effort to reestablish two schools
the Weimar School of Applied Arts (Weimar Kunstgewerbeschule) and the neighboring Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule für bildende Kunst)
Upon the recommendation of Belgian architect Henry van de Velde
who had previously directed the Weimar School of Applied Arts
the Berlin architect Walter Gropius was invited to head the new school
Gropius’s request to rechristen the institution under a new name
Bauhaus State School (Staatliches Bauhaus)
Architecture promised the possibility of realizing the total work of art
and artisans worked together toward a single
Gropius asked one of the earliest figures to be hired at the Bauhaus
to graphically evoke the spiritual possibilities of this new art pedagogy
Feininger illustrated Gropius’s future-oriented vision somewhat counterintuitively with a woodcut image of a gothic cathedral replete with flying buttresses
and rays of light emanating from its steeples
the cathedral promised the possibility of realizing the Gesamtkunstwerk
Gropius’s radical pedagogical vision subjected the school to considerable political pressure throughout its short life
particularly from the increasingly conservative forces that took hold in Weimar Germany
the school was forced to relocate from Weimar to Dessau in 1925
The school’s demise came at the hands of the Nazis in 1933
Despite continual turmoil throughout the Bauhaus’s itinerant existence
its radical pedagogy cemented the school’s legacy as a site for artistic experimentation well into the 21st century
The ultimate goal of all creative activity is the building
To decorate the building was once the noblest function of the fine arts
and the fine arts were considered indispensable components of great architecture
from which they can only be delivered by the conscious collaboration and cooperation of all craftsmen
and sculptors must recognize anew and learn to grasp the composite character of building
both as a totality and in terms of its parts so that their work may once more imbue itself with the architectonic spirit
The old art schools were incapable of producing this unity—and how could they
They must be merged once more with the workshop
This world of mere drawing and painting of pattern-designers and applied artists must at long last become a world that builds
If the young person who senses within himself a passion for creative practice begins his career
then the unproductive ‘artist’ will no longer be condemned to imperfect artistry because his skill will be preserved in craftsmanship
For there is no such thing as ‘art by profession.’ There is no essential difference between the artist and the craftsman
in rare moments of illumination beyond man’s will
may allow art to unconsciously blossom from the work of his hand
but the foundations of craft are indispensable to every artist
This is the original source of creative design
So let us then create a new guild of craftsmen, free of the divisive class pretensions that attempted to raise an arrogant barrier between craftsmen and artists! Let us together will, conceive, and create the new building of the future, which will unite everything in a single form—architecture and sculpture and painting—and which will one day rise heavenwards from the hands of a million craftsmen as a crystalline symbol of a new and coming faith.3
Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available? This chair costs $1,699 before tax, shipping, and handling fees. There aren’t payment plans, but other checkout options include PayPal and Venmo.
What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any? There are no customization or upholstery options.
What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery? The Crate & Barrel website estimates the shipping date for early October.
What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home? The dimensions are 38.5"W x 33.75"D x 24.5"H. My New York apartment couldn’t accommodate another chair so I had it shipped to my parents’ house in New Jersey. It’s currently placed in the living room where there is a lot of open space to work with, but I could definitely envision this in a smaller home, where it could stand out as a statement piece.
Is the chair suitable for particular decor styles and if so, which? The Dessau Chair is Crate & Barrel’s take on midcentury-modern furniture, with the combination of warm layers and material mixes, making it fair game for a spectrum of styles. I’m openly very anti-bouclé, but I genuinely like what they did with it for this chair—it honestly had me reconsidering my stance!
Is it durable and practical in a modern home?
I think that the curvilinear frame with its tubular chrome-finished steel might be a red flag for some parents that need to baby-proof their home, but the chair itself could withstand any force on impact.
Is the chair kid and/or pet friendly? One of our cat’s has claimed this chair as his throne, so I would definitely categorize it as pet friendly. As far as children are concerned, I think they would probably be fine in this seat.
What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed? Instructions were not provided on the website, but I’m sure that stains could be removed from the fabric if you looked into it. Scrapes on the steel would require additional research.
Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL? The photos on the website make the chair appear more minimal, so if that’s not someone’s vibe then I could see them writing this off. I found it to be far more appealing in person, and would be curious to see how it looks within a more colorful space.

Johannes Vetter notched up a fourth consecutive javelin victory beyond 90 metres
winning at the Anhalt Meeting – part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze series – in Dessau on Friday (21)
Showing no signs of tiredness from his world-leading 94.20m effort in Ostrava two days prior
the 2017 world champion opened with a solid 87.67m before sending his spear beyond the 90-metre line in round two with 91.86m
That mark added exactly one metre the meeting record that had stood to Sergey Makarov for 19 years
and he threw 93.20m in the next round to consolidate his lead
World and Olympic finalist Julian Weber was second with a season’s best of 84.51m while Moldova’s Andrain Mardare was third with 82.99m
“I actually didn’t expect to throw this far again today – 93.20m is quite something
especially since my last competition was just 48 hours ago
I’m really happy with the result,” said Vetter
who has already thrown 90 metres seven times this year
“It was a pretty solid series overall
but as a precaution I decided to pass on the last two attempts
I think I’ve shown that I’ve got enough of that at the moment with that 93-metre throw
that competition in Ostrava just two days ago
that’s the main motivation until then
but I am really pleased with how well things are going
I don’t think we had expected for things to be going as well as they are at the moment
for us it’s more manifestation to help us determine at which level I’m at
but I know there’s still more in the tank
to not take all six throws when you feel your body is starting to tire and continue to concentrate on what really matters.”
Only Zelezny has managed to produce more 90-metre throws than Vetter in a single season
He also achieved five consecutive 90-metre competitions that season; Vetter is currently at four such competitions
“To be able to throw as consistently as I am at the moment
I don’t think anyone has been able to do that since Jan Zelezny and that makes me incredibly proud and happy,” said Vetter
“But it’s still a long way to go to Tokyo.”
World champions Malaika Mihambo and Sam Kendricks were comfortable winners of their respective events
Kendricks won the men’s pole vault with 5.80m and went on to have three solid attempts at a would-be meeting record of 5.91m
leaped 6.68m (1.1m/s) to win the long jump by 17 centimetres
Ukraine’s Iryna Herashchenko emerged as the surprising winner of the high jump
winning on countback from world silver medallist Yaroslava Mahuchikh as both women cleared 1.92m
World champion Mariya Lasitskene finished equal seventh with a best clearance of 1.80m
Belgium’s Cynthia Bolingo set a meeting record of 51.75 to win the women’s 400m
and Poland’s Pia Skryszowska held off a strong challenge from Elvira Herman to win the 100m hurdles by 0.02 in 12.92
Benjamin Robert won the men’s 800m in 1:45.79

Among the organisations represented are Deutsche Bahn
nextpractice-Institut and insurance company R+V Versicherung The award honours projects that find creative solutions to the challenges of demographic change
projects are honoured that promote participation and openness to a diverse community and help to reduce discrimination and compensate for current inequalities in opportunities
We will continue this approach!” Promoting openness to the world and diversity is an important task
especially in times of growing populism and right-wing extremist ideas
“We must all realise that without skilled workers from abroad and a modern and service-oriented administration that responds to the needs of our citizens
our economy will not be able to meet the challenges of demographic change
It is therefore only logical that we train the employees of our administrations to improve their diversity skills
This is where successful integration and inclusion begins and sends a positive signal to local companies,” says Mayor Dr Robert Reck
University President Jörg Bagdahn also highlights the importance of international students: “More than half of our students come from abroad
Our study programme not only enriches the entire university
science and culture to work closely together in Dessau
Together with a network of companies and institutions
we support students before and during their studies in order to prepare them specifically for starting their careers in Saxony-Anhalt.” The collaboration between the three administrative sites in Dessau-Roßlau was nominated for the final round in Berlin along with two other applicants
The jury ultimately decided in favour of Ed
ZÜBLIN AG – Subdivision East with the project “We build with diversity”
which we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
The nomination alone shows that we are on the right track in Dessau-Rosslau and that the existing cooperation must be expanded in order to continue to gain appeal
The project partners have emerged from the nomination stronger and with new motivation and are in the process of implementing further programmes and projects

In the summer of 1992, Stephen Immerwahr’s steely trio Codeine were making their second album at Harold Dessau Recording
had entered the broadening slipstream of American indie rock trickling not only out of major cities
These three mid-20s musicians from Oberlin College—singer and bassist Immerwahr, drummer Chris Brokaw, and guitarist John Engle—signed to Sub Pop and toured Europe with Bastro
“I saw people my age in bands that were getting popular
making a living—and that was totally new to me
I wasn’t aware of other bands,” Immerwahr says
not for the success of the band but for what the second album and our songs could be.”
it felt like they’d reached that new level
having played several of these numbers live; he even tuned his drums for the first time on “Sea,” the album’s gripping and forlorn opener
the Oberlin friend who had cut Codeine’s debut and found the studio
But there was one vexing sound that paralyzed Immerwahr
wobbly frequencies that sound like how you might imagine microwave towers,” Immerwahr recalls
finding fault in nearly every aspect of Codeine’s performance
McMackin tried to suss out the audio problem
thinking Immerwahr might have simply been bothered by a mechanical sound in the control room
Neither Brokaw nor Engle detected the whinnying noise
so they wondered if Immerwahr was merely unhappy with his vocals
perhaps overburdened by his expectations for what Codeine could be
To wit: He only spotted the sound on his tracks
‘Why can’t we just take an afternoon and have Steve try doing the vocals again?’” Brokaw says
“We were working toward making a really fucking heavy new record
For nearly 30 years, the session remained in that scrap heap. Codeine regrouped fast, finishing the six-song EP Barely Real by summer’s end. It became something of their landmark, a charming and popular oddity between their debut and their finale, 1994’s The White Birch. Brokaw bailed, however, before year’s end, in part to focus on his Matador-signed band Come
but also because he was frustrated by burning through a Sub Pop advance only to discard a record he liked
the second session Codeine had abandoned in its brief life
“I wanted so much for the band to be great
for the record to be great,” says Immerwahr
“Wanting something really hard is not how you get it
named for the studio that once seemed a curse
Dessau arguably stands as the best of Codeine’s three albums
a perfect snapshot of the existential anxiety that can arrive in one’s late 20s
when adolescence fades far into the rearview
Immerwahr seemed poised at the endless precipice of waiting for it all to unravel
to find out that he wasn’t worthy of what he began to imagine for himself
the trio managed a wondrous sense of restraint
with Brokaw’s measured power and Englin’s gnarled elegance perfectly framing Immerwahr’s kind of rugged delicacy
A new version of “Sea” opened The White Birch
but it’s not as supple as this first draft; another “Jr” made it to Barely Real
but this one arrives as a marvelous cascade
“I wonder if there’ll come a time when your hand won’t fit in mine,” Immerwahr sings haltingly at the start of the album’s acoustic centerpiece
“I Wonder,” a stunning ballad that didn’t make it to the subsequent albums
the guarded insecurity still crackles on tape
When so-called lost albums by familiar bands are found
revisionist history always calls out in ready temptation: Where would Codeine have gone had what is now Dessau been released in 1992 as The White Birch
Codeine doesn’t indulge in that speculation in 2022
Immerwahr just points out the difference medication has made in his life
and how he might have been more stable had he found it at the time
‘I don’t really see this band lasting more than a year and a half
who recorded every Codeine album despite this hiccup
it feels like a parable against self-doubt and self-censure for not letting your neuroses get in your way
“I have never been absolutely thrilled with anything I have ever done
knowing there was no going back to try and ‘fix’ it
The lens of the microscope gets blurry after 20 years.”
