The dandy horse (also known as velocipede) is the precursor to the bicycle
Germany will celebrate the invention and its inventor
with a commemorative silver €20 coin in 2017
The invention incorporated the two-wheeler principle of the bicycle and motorcycle and was the beginning of mechanized personal transport
Users of the dandy horse used their feet to propel the two-wheeled machine when needed
The coin celebrating the creation and its creator is due for release in July
includes in the background some historical context: a volcanic eruption representing the eruption in 1815 in Indonesia that caused abnormal weather patterns for 1816
now referred to as the Year Without a Summer
prompted Drais to seek a means of transportation that could replace the horse; the result was his invention
The dandy horse and its rider appear in the foreground
with an inscription in German referring to Drais and his invention
The obverse carries the standard federal eagle
along with the G Mint mark of the State mints of Baden-Württemberg
and notation of the coin’s .925 silver composition
framed within a circle of the 12 stars of Europe
the year 2017 and the coin denomination encircle the rim
Edge lettering on the coin marks the anniversary of Drais’ invention.
The coin will weigh 18 grams and measure 32.5 millimeters in diameter.
Uncirculated examples will be available at post offices for face value
Proof versions will be sold for a higher price
which will be established right before the launch

That was Dan Dierdorf’s introduction to football analysis on the air
And what a kick the Canton native has been on since
The 1967 Glenwood High School graduate entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996 on the heels of his 13 splendid seasons as a tackle with the St
he is better known across the country as one of the game’s top television analysts
making him TV’s longest tenured pro football analyst
And it all started when he filled in for Cardinals place-kicker Jim Bakken on a radio show at KMOX in St
Bakken had a regular radio show with Cardinals quarterback Jim Hart called “The Arm and Leg Show.”
so I was asked to sit in,” Dierdorf said recently in a phone interview from his summer home in Michigan
Dierdorf became an analyst on University of Missouri radio telecasts
he transitioned from radio and TV analysis on NFL games for CBS to a 12-year stint on ABC’s Monday Night Football
He teamed with Al Michaels and Frank Gifford on what many consider one of the best announcing teams in NFL history
Dierdorf returned to CBS and has been one of the network’s top analysts since
he again will team with Greg Gumbel on the network’s No
2 broadcast team — meaning they generally are assigned to the second-most-watched game on the network every Sunday
“It wasn’t my life’s plan to go into broadcasting,” Dierdorf said
when I was warming up on the field before a game
I’ve been in an NFL football stadium for the last 41 years
I get paid to say the same things that I would say sitting next to a guy on a barstool
Dierdorf’s work has been lauded within the industry
He is one of only three Hall of Famers to receive the Hall of Fame’s prestigious Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award
he never assumed he would find broadcast success
He’s proud he worked his way up the corporate ladder instead of using his football celebrity to carry him
“I worked the last eight years of my playing career at KMOX,” Dierdorf said
Bob Costas was on staff; he’d just come on board
“I went as far as doing a weekday call-in show during the season
I wouldn’t have been surprised if (the team) said it was not fitting for a player to be on air
was the man who put Dierdorf on the path to post-football stardom
Jack Buck and Hank Stram were doing the NFL on CBS Radio
which was two games on Saturday and two on Sunday
“Jack Buck went to CBS Radio to get me to do the games
I’d never been in an NFL broadcast booth before
I could never repay him for what he did for me.”
Buck got him to do 40 football games his first season on CBS Radio
“Here’s a twist for Canton: My first game for ABC was the Hall of Fame Game,” Dierdorf said
“I was in the old press box at Fawcett Stadium
I’m staying at my station before the game starts
who was just hired to do college football for ABC
Frank’s eyes got so big when I walked in — the camera crew was hidden behind me
“That was before I did my first game for ABC
Dierdorf said the reason for his on-air success is as simple as his style
my first career (football) was so fulfilling that I never felt I had to fall into the trap of trying to think that I’m more important than the game I’m covering
“It’s always about the men who are playing the game on the field.”

The medieval-era Danube River town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof is the theme for Germany’s 2016 .9999 fine gold €100 coin
The site in Bavaria will be the 13th UNESCO World Heritage Site Germany honors in this gold coin series since beginning the program in 2003.
The site was added to the UNESCO list in 2006 for its many monuments and old buildings and a history dating back to at least the third century A.D.
“A notable number of historic structures span some two millennia and include ancient Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings. Regensburg’s 11th- to 13th-century architecture — including the market, city hall and cathedral — still defines the character of the town marked by tall buildings, dark and narrow lanes, and strong fortifications,” according to the UNESCO World Heritage Site website listing
The coin will be struck at each of Germany’s five mints: Berlin (A); Munich (D); Stuttgart (F); Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J)
The obverse of the coin shows the federal eagle emblem
12 stars of Europe and appropriate Mint mark.
Diedorf artist Friedrich Brenner designed the reverse
which features a birds-eye view of the river cutting through the village where some of the historic buildings reside
The representation combines the 2000-year history of Regensburg with the modernity of the present
according to a translation of the German Federal Ministry of Finance announcement about the coin
The Uncirculated €100 gold coin will weigh 15.5 grams and measure 28 millimeters in diameter
The mintage (as yet unannounced) will be evenly distributed between each of the five mints.
The coin is due for release in October 2016
These sites were honored by earlier €100 gold coin in this series:
Cathedral and Church of our Lady in Trier (2009)
• Würzburger Residenz and Hofgarten (2010)
No coin for this series was issued in 2005 because a gold coin was issued for the 2006 FIFA World Cup
• Upper Middle Rhine Valley (scheduled for release Oct
