The Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen ended an 80-year presence at Little Flower Parish and Catholic School with the close of the school term on May 20 Sisters Jean Louise Schafer and Mary Ruth Huhn have been busy preparing for their move to their motherhouse in Hankinson Although both have returned to Hankinson for the summer every year since they’ve been with Little Flower Parish they will not come back to Rugby in August As they sat in the front parlor at their home across the street from the church Schafer and Huhn said they would miss the many people they’ve met in Rugby and Little Flower Parish who took her first vows with the Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen in 1983 talked briefly about the order’s history we have a long and varied history,” Schafer said 24 sisters came from Germany to Collegeville to do domestic work for the priests of that parish and diocese More sisters came in waves and expanded their reach to German-speaking communities in the region Huhn said Hankinson “was a place where they were invited and they were welcomed into the community They built their convent there in 1928.” Schaefer said about 14 years after the convent’s construction in Hankinson Rugby’s Little Flower Parish built its school which is interesting,” Schaefer said “The building originally came from a little town near Hibbing so Hibbing had to move,” Schaefer said “All the buildings were moved and relocated some distance away “The pastor of the parish in that little town was looking for a Catholic parish that would want a school,” Schaefer said he drove down Highway 2 asking pastors if they wanted to start a Catholic school And the pastor here at Little Flower was Monsignor Nicholas Cloos And he was very excited about having a school “They took the school building apart brick by brick and moved it to Rugby,” Schafer said “The people in Rugby dug out a basement and put the school back together again and rebuilt it so there was a moratorium on building supplies that’s why they had to use everything they could from the school and rebuild it.” Cloos next invited sisters from the Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen to teach since the nuns spoke German and many were familiar with the German-Russian immigrant families who had settled in North Dakota Sisters from the order served other communities in the region as well Some taught in the Pierce County community of Selz while others taught in Karlsruhe in McHenry County Nuns from a different order taught the children of German-Russian immigrants in Balta The nuns taught in public schools in the region to relieve a shortage of teachers caused by World War II since not all public school children were Catholic North Dakota legislators passed a law forbidding nuns to wear their habits while teaching in public schools they wanted to provide an education in the public schools,” Schafer said The nuns teaching at Little Flower School numbered about nine when the school opened in 1942 Children at Little Flower School learned reading and other traditional school subjects with religious teachings as well Nuns also taught religion to Catholic children attending public schools in after-school programs “Our sisters over the years have served in several communities and parishes in religious education as directors of religious education or in schools here in North Dakota in the eastern half of North Dakota but we just don’t have the people to do it any longer,” Schafer said “There are people who say ‘We would like to have sisters in our school too,’ but there just aren’t enough to go around.” had told her there had been no sisters taking their final vows “There have been some novices who’ve tried it out they didn’t persevere,” Schafer said Schafer began her work at Little Flower Parish in 2000 Huhn joined her and another sister as a novice in 2009 The number fell to two again two years later took her first vows with the order in 2011 Schaefer said she came from the Bismarck Diocese Both said they would always remember their time with Little Flower Parish We did a lot of different things in our work with the children and the adults,” Huhn said “But our main work here is just being present and giving witness to the value of the faith There’s something more than we’re doing every day “I will miss the contact with the children praying with the people in the parish and the warmth and hospitality people have shown to us From the moment we stepped into this town until today people have been extraordinary in their support from the sisters Schafer and Huhn said many Rugby residents “I like to take walks around town,” Huhn said You pass my house at the same time every afternoon.'” “We’ve dealt with the good people of Rugby and they have been more than supportive of us and our role as women religious “Father Miller has been so supportive of religion in the parish all the pastors in the parish in the 22 years I’ve been here they’ve been so appreciative of the presence of sisters and they’ve done so much to support us,” she added “Father himself was taught by our sisters at the Catholic school there so he has an affinity and a great relationship with our sisters,” she said it will be hard to leave that community.” “I think a big part of our vocation is community life so it will be nice to be back with the sisters There are challenges living with them also but it will be nice to be there to help around the house we don’t have anybody available to drive,’ we’ll be able to help with that so I think that will be a good thing.” It’s always nice to pray with the sisters in a group and that will be something I’ll be looking forward to and also the community life with the small group there it will be good to just get to know each other and work with each other again.” Both said Rugby residents have already asked them if they planned to return for a visit in the future Huhn said they hoped to come back to see the friends they’ve made in the community “at some point.” She added she would keep the people of Rugby in her prayers as she also prays for the families of nuns at Hankinson some of whom are buried in Little Flower Cemetery Both sisters said area residents who happened to be traveling near Hankinson were welcome to call and visit the motherhouse The Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen sponsor retreats to operate second Pyrum plant in Saarland A new pyrolysis plant modelled on the plant in Dillingen/Saar with a capacity of 20,000 tons of ELT per year is to be built in Perl-Besch an der Mosel by the end of 2025 This will double Pyrum’s current recycling capacity for ELT Plant components with notoriously long delivery times will be ordered in the first quarter of 2024 final preparations are underway at the main plant in Dillingen/Saar for the first long-term operation of the new recycling line TAD 2 which is scheduled to start on the 18th January after the reactor was heated up to operating temperature yesterday as part of the final tests The line will then run for up to three-weeks continuously under real conditions and with industrial quantities. Following the successful test, Pyrum intends to switch directly into permanent operation of the line with ongoing performance optimisations The TAD 3 line is also expected to enter the final phase of the warm ramp-up by the end of March 2024 Pascal Klein, CEO of Pyrum Innovations AG said; “While we are finalising the last work for the plant expansion in Dillingen, we are also starting the next chapter in Perl-Besch full of energy thanks to the financing agreement recently reached with BASF “The second Pyrum-owned plant is to be built there by the end of 2025 We are also in the process of planning further joint plants with our partners across Europe These developments are not only proof of the success of our unique technology but also of our willingness to continuously invest in the future of sustainable resource recovery.” BASF invests into Pyrum as part of its ChemCyclingTM project: Pyrolysis oil from waste tires as additional raw material source next to oil from mixed plastic waste BASF SE is to invest €16 million into Pyrum Innovations AG a technology company specialized in the pyrolysis of waste tires BASF will support the expansion of Pyrum’s pyrolysis plant in Dillingen and the further roll out of the technology Pyrum is currently running a pyrolysis plant for end-of-life tires that can process up to 10,000 tons of tires per year two additional production lines will be added to the existing plant BASF will uptake most of the pyrolysis oil and process it into new chemical products by using a mass balance approach as part of its ChemCyclingTM project The resulting products will mainly be for customers from the plastics industry who are looking for high-quality and functional plastics based on recycled materials Pyrum intends to build additional tire pyrolysis plants together with interested partners The collaborative set-up will accelerate the path towards the use of Pyrum’s unique technology in serial production Future investors in the technology can have the certainty that the pyrolysis oil produced will be taken up by BASF to produce high-performance chemical products The co-operation will thus serve to close the loop for post-consumer plastic waste Waste tires fall within the definition of post-consumer plastic waste according to DIN EN ISO 14021:2016-07 BASF and Pyrum anticipate that production capacities of up to 100,000 tons of pyrolysis oil derived from waste tires could be built up within the next years together with additional partners “BASF is committed to leading the transition of the plastics industry to a circular economy Replacing fossil feedstock through recycled feedstock at the beginning of the chemical value chain is a major lever in this regard,” says Hartwig Michels President of BASF’s Petrochemicals division we have taken another significant step towards establishing a broad supply base for pyrolysis oil and towards offering our customers products based on chemically recycled plastic waste on a commercial scale.” “After twelve years of hard work Pyrum is proud to finally be accepted by the market We are confident that we will become one of the market leaders in tire recycling with BASF’s investment,” says Pascal Klein “We can finally increase our tire recycling and oil production capacity and concentrate our efforts on making our technology even more performant.” BASF will use the pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tires as an additional raw material source next to oil from mixed plastic waste the use of which is the long-term focus of the ChemCycling project Products made from pyrolysis oil by using a mass balance approach have the exact same properties as products manufactured with primary fossil resources they have a lower carbon footprint than conventional products This is the conclusion of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis carried out by the consulting company Sphera on behalf of BASF the LCA analysis could show this for the production of polyamide 6 (PA6) used in the production of high-performance components for the automotive industry One ton of PA6 produced with tire pyrolysis oil from Pyrum under a mass balance approach emits 1.3 tons less CO2 compared with one ton PA6 produced with fossil feedstock The lower emissions result from avoiding the incineration of the end-of-life tires More information on all LCA Do you know of another lake or river where you can kayak that we have not mentioned Pyrum sees strategic expansion of production capacities for recovered Carbon Black Now, Pyrum Innovations AG has successfully completed the mechanical assembly of the new grinding plant at the site in Dillingen. With an input material of 1,650 kg/h and an output material of 1,350 kg/h, the jet mill developed by Hosokawa is the world’s largest grinding plant for rCB The difference between the input and output material is fed back to the beginning after each cycle and added to the process again The expansion of the grinding capacity is expected to significantly increase the sales of rCB in the future After the company commissioned the two new reactors (TAD 2 & 3) last year as part of the site expansion the installation of a new grinding and pelletising plant became necessary to be able to process the Carbon Black produced in the new reactors After the completion of the mechanical installation work has already started on the cabling that will supply the plant with power in the future The grinding plant is scheduled to start operations in April 2025 Pascal Klein, CEO of Pyrum Innovations AG stated; “With the successful completion of the assembly of the world’s largest grinding plant for rCB here in Dillingen we can significantly expand our production capacities The expansion will enable us to substantially increase sales of our rCB and thus take a further step towards a sustainable and future-oriented circular economy.” Due to the technical interdependency between the grinding and pelleting plants production is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2025 The remaining components of the pelletising plant are already on their way and will arrive in the next few weeks so that the assembly of the pelletiser can begin soon Pyrum total output decreased to EUR 12.9 million (2022: EUR 19.1 million) as construction of the plant expansion in Dillingen progresses according to plan Pyrum Innovations AG presented its annual and consolidated financial statements for the 2023 financial year the Group generated total output of EUR 12.8 million which decreased by EUR 6.3 million compared to the same period of the previous year (2022: EUR 19.1 million) due to a decline in own work capitalised and lower than expected rCB production volumes Own work capitalised amounted to EUR 11.7 million (2022: EUR 17.8 million) as construction of the plant expansion in Dillingen progressed according to plan sales were slightly above the previous year’s level (2022: EUR 1.0 million) sales from the rCB produced fell well short of expectations despite sales prices of more than EUR 900 per tonne as the throughput of the installed grinding and pelleting plant is still limited to a maximum of 350 kg per hour To increase the production capacity of the rCB a second grinding and pelleting plant has been ordered Commissioning of the new plant is scheduled for the end of 2024 as the rCB can then be produced and sold in significantly larger quantities The consolidated net loss for the year was EUR -9.5 million (2022: EUR -7.8 million) We now have a total of eight projects in various phases in the pipeline which we want to get over the finishing line in the next three years This means that the current year will also be an extremely exciting one for our company history and we are extremely confident about the coming months and years.” Pyrum states a successful start of hot commissioning of reactor 3 with First production run scheduled to start next week Pyrum Innovations AG is commissioning the third and thus last thermolysis reactor (TAD 3) at its main plant in Dillingen/Saar Following the positive commissioning process of TAD 2 the third reactor was heated up for the first time This involved heating the new reactor to a temperature of around 650°C for the first time The findings from the previous commissioning of TAD 2 were transferred in full to TAD 3 additional minor adjustments have been made on this basis which have contributed to a smooth start of the new reactor After the reactor has cooled down and final preparatory work has been completed this weekend the first warm-up run with the production of thermolysis oil and rCB is scheduled for next week The aim is to ramp up the throughput of TAD 3 to 75 to 80 per cent of the target output within a few commissioning runs TAD 2 and TAD 3 will then be successively ramped up to full capacity utilisation of 100 per cent the final commissioning of the power generation of the produced thermolysis gas is scheduled for the next few weeks Adjustments and fine-tuning are currently still being carried out BASF is to invest €16 million into Pyrum Innovations AG the use of which is the long-term focus of the Chemcycling project end-of-life tyre (ELT) recycling equipment manufacturer Eldan Recycling A/S and pyrolysis technology developer Pyrum Innovations AG will include each other’s products in their complete recycling solutions The Danish and German firms say they’ll distribute these solutions “actively” ”We use the newest developed designs in production of high-quality steel- and textile-free uniform-sized rubber granulate,” comments Bjørn Laursen Eldan’s product manager for tyre recycling “This quality rubber granulate will ensure optimal performance of the Pyrum tyre pyrolysis plants with special attention to low power consumption and automation.” more powerful shredder from Eldan Recycling This will likely be delivered to its plant site in Dillingen ELTs must be shredded before Pyrum recycles them using its patented tyre pyrolysis technology Their rubber components are crushed during the shredding process and steel wire and textile fibres separated Pyrum can treble its ELT processing capacity to up to 7,000 pieces daily the machine enables a significantly better quality and thus higher sales prices for the separated steel “We are very pleased about the agreement with Eldan,” states Pascal Klein chief executive officer of Pyrum Innovations “In addition to the significant increase in our shredding capacities which is also a prerequisite for the commissioning of our two new tyre pyrolysis reactors we will be able to supply a significantly better steel quality with a much higher purity in the future This means that our steel wire will also count as raw material in the future and can thus be directly processed into new steel the sales cooperation shows that Eldan is convinced of our tyre pyrolysis technology and values it as a sales advantage – a further confirmation of our process.” Eldan’s Bjørn Laursen adds: ”Eldan are really excited about the corporation with Pyrum Our fully automated tyre recycling plant will produce the optimal input for the Pyrum tyre pyrolysis plant This will be a “state of the art” system that will combine the best of two worlds We believe the Dillingen plant will be a show-off for more plants to come.” If you would like the latest news from the Chinese tyre industry in Chinese, visit our partner site
