Vashon Island Visual Artists will hold its Spring Studio Tour
It will feature well-known local actors Cate O’Kane and Dedra Whitt
All the shapes and colors in her work come directly from nature
MOSAIC ARTIST Clare Dohna has come full circle
she moved from New York City to Seattle in 1984 to sell her handmade jewelry at Pike Place Market
Dohna sold pins cast from old buttons at the Market’s day stalls
Over the years, her interest shifted from jewelry to mosaics. She founded Firehouse Tileworks at her home on Vashon Island and began making weather-resistant pieces from cosmic eggs to birdbaths. And now Dohna is back at the Market, commissioned to create a large public-art display for the new MarketFront project
Dohna’s tiled walls will cover 360 square feet of space on the new esplanade plaza planned to meander down the hill toward the waterfront
One wall will be a mosaic depicting fruits and vegetables
and a third wall will swim with fantastical
colorful fish inscribed with donors’ names
and Dohna hopes to finish up her tiled walls in spring
Dohna fashions each and every mosaic bit
her mosaics remain as bright and colorful as ever
All those shades of Persian blue inspire Dohna’s color schemes
“I love how the glazes reflect light so the colors pop on a gray day,” says Dohna
she’s favoring certain shades of slightly transparent green she loves to mix with a dark red she describes as “luscious
Is it the bits-and-pieces feel of mosaics that creates such affinity when paired with plants
That allows Dohna’s pieces to slip so harmoniously into garden settings
whether she’s making a birdhouse or a diamondback rattler pathway in her back garden
Perhaps best of all for maintenance-challenged gardeners (and who isn’t?)
year-round focal points that require no weeding or watering
“It doesn’t take much to keep them clean,” says Dohna
She recommends washing the mosaics with a scrub brush and water
it’s all about how her work interacts with nature
And I’m fascinated watching bees and birds sipping from birdbaths
and when my son helped me install it on a cold February morning
It was the first bee I’d seen since the previous autumn
powerful enough to draw forth a slumbering bumblebee
remains one of my favorite things in the garden
“I made a six-foot long lizard a few years ago,” she says
And her longhorn beetle made it into the juried Mosaic Arts International show at the Tacoma Glass Museum in 2013
where it’s now ensconced in the middle of her kitchen

The new chief commercial officer of VW Financial Services (VWFS) has vowed to help “get Britain moving again” in his new role
Carl zu Dohna (pictured) has 20 years’ experience in automotive management and previously worked as director of VW Commercial Vehicles before taking the new role in May
He said: “The auto finance sector has a responsibility to learn lessons from the past few months of lockdown and help get Britain moving again
The initial positive response by VWFS and others in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic must also be reflected in the ongoing coordinated response required to deal with the enormity of the economic challenge that lies ahead
“While we will need to look at how our business operates in this new world
there is a responsibility to help our retailer networks as they begin to open up and rebuild their businesses.”
The industry did well in its response to the economic impact of the pandemic
and the overhaul on vehicle collections during times of restricted movement can represent a lesson to be learned
He added: “We are mapping the customer journey and re-aligning our focus on how we deliver a great experience from end-to-end
This is vital work which can support our retailer networks
we are overlaying this with how the pandemic will influence and change the industry
how people buy cars and what might change for retailers.”
Reshaping products such as increased deposit contributions by retailers and no payments on new vehicles for the first three months will help the industry begin to engage customers once again
The right vehicle finance will be pivotal in enabling more workers in the UK to return to work
VWFS predominantly deals with dealer and customer financing
The company reports total assets of around €223.5 billion
an operating result of €2.96 billion and a portfolio of around 21.5 million current contracts
Zu Dohna added: “It seems likely that we will live and work in parallel to this virus and its impact for some time to come
so the need to be agile and nimble enough to shape our products and services accordingly is essential to success
“We are constantly looking to evolve our products and services to support our retail partners
We must anticipate this change carefully and adapt to how we can best support them.”
