2024–Fie Christine Skarsoe of Luxembourg and Imperador Dos Cedros won the CDI4* Grand Prix Friday
the pair’s first Big Tour victory this year
Fie and the 11-year-old Lusitano stallion scored 70.087% in the qualifier for the Freestyle and their first victory since April 2023
Germany’s Franziska Stieglmaier and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding Samurai was runner-up on 68.348% with Liesbeth Geven of the Netherlands on Iago
For German Dorothee Schneider and Luxembourg Fie Skarsoe it was a weekend of double victories at the 2024 CDI Donaueschingen on 12 - 15 September 2024
Helen Erbe claimed her second CDI Grand Prix victory as a senior
It were two starts and two victories for German Olympian Dorothee Schneider who is working hard at making a come back to the highest echelon of Grand Prix sport since the retirement of Showtime
Schneider dominated the small tour aboard Maik Kanitzky's Danish bred Oldenburg Atterupgaards Barcelo (by Bon Coeur x Caprimond)
She won the Prix St Georges with 73.775 % and the Intermediaire I with 71.375%
She twice kept Lena Hassmann aboard Gestüt Fünfhausen's 7-year old Hanoverian Framework (by Furstenball x Ampere) at bay
"Barcelo is a horse with lots of possibilities
great basic gaits and a lot of talent for taking on weight - and he's also beautiful," said Schneider
In the first test he 'called' out to his colleagues a little too much
but in the second test he showed a very stable trot tour and particularly successful pirouettes
"He's a horse with lots of potential and it was great fun to present him here in Donaueschingen."
The Grand Prix for Special was won by 2022 Piaff Forderpreis winner and European U25 Championship medal winner Helen Erbe on the 17-year old Hanoverian Carlos (by Carabas x Weltmeyer)
Erbe posted the high score of 71.196 % ahead of German Olympian Helen Langehanenberg on Nicola Ahorner's 12-year old Hanoverian Facilone (by Furstenball x De Niro) with 71.130 %
Dorothee Schneider topped the leaderboard in the Grand Prix Special on the Chinese owned 12-year old Westfalian Dayman (by Daily Deal x Flovino)
She won the class with 70.475% after placing third in the Grand Prix with 69.609%
Schneider on Dayman"Dayman is more of a child at play
He always wants to put something in his mouth
keep himself busy or rearrange something in his box," is how Schneider describes her special winner
"He is a really sweet horse who wants to be given a little more security by me in the test
which is something we absolutely need for our sport."
"The coolest thing was the warm-up today," said the double winner happily after the special
I often have the problem that he gets a bit too proud for me in the test and then doesn't quite let go of the topline
I wasn't able to take this feeling from the warm-up through the whole test
but I found the first piaffe and passage part to be freer in the topline
really good." In the changes he then became a bit too proud again
Fie Skarsoa and Manon Ackermann's 11-year old Lusitano stallion Imperador dos Cedros (by Rubi x Hostil) made it a double in Donaueschingen
they won the Grand Prix for freestyle with 70.087 % and the Kur to Music on Sunday with 75.175 %
Fie Skarsoe on Imperador dos CedrosFor Skarsoe this was the second international she won on the grey stallion after the CDI Sint Truiden in April 2023
Show director Matthias Rath was thrilled with how his first edition of the CHI Donaueschingen went
He is looking forward to staging the show again in 2025 together with Erik Pauly
"The spectators were relieved to see that we have great equestrian sport here in Donaueschingen again
which was what we had hoped for throughout the show
It's wonderful when you can end the show on such a great day
the sun is clearly symbolically shining over this competition again
this event with the new organizers was the start of a new era."
The 2025 CDI Donaueschingen is scheduled for 18 - 21 September 2025

two small streams — the Brigach and the Breg — join to form the start of a bigger river that might sound more familiar
The Danube, Europe’s second-longest river (and one that crosses 10 countries, the most in the world), begins in the town of Donaueschingen. This is where Spain’s football team are staying during the European Championship
Just over 22,000 people live in Donaueschingen
It is a pretty isolated place in the middle of the Black Forest that locals have transformed in an effort to welcome their guests this month
Local shops and bars are decked out with Spain flags and there is even an art exhibition showcasing what could generously be described as rather outdated images of Spain
one depicts a bullfight on a football pitch — set amid a typical scene of the local landscape
There’s not much to do apart from enjoying the hotel’s facilities and relaxing and that’s probably why it’s been chosen
There are three golf courses and a gym now filled with specialist equipment brought over by the Spanish FA
Some members of the Spain unit see the two-hour bus trip they will have to make to Stuttgart Airport before each game as the biggest downside
but they state it is a significant improvement on where they stayed for the 2006 World Cup in Germany
“We are in a privileged area,” Dani Olmo said on Thursday
“We have a level of calmness that not many squads have
It’s a perfect place to address a competition like this.”
So what do they get up to when they are not training
There’s a tradition in Spain’s national team
a very typical Spanish card game based on guessing how many tricks will be won

Others prefer to play golf and some prefer video games
It’s helped build bonds between them and Williams and Yamal especially have developed a relationship that goes beyond being Spain’s biggest attacking threats
What makes Lamine Yamal such a special footballer
“We have a good friendship. I try to advise him in the same way my elder brother (Inaki Williams) has done with me
I even sometimes see him doing his homework in the hotel room here!”
Yamal said: “I’ve got along with him since my first call-up
I enjoy playing with him because opponents need to cover both flanks and I think it leaves the pitch more open for both of us
I let him brag… but when it comes to gaming
There are TV screens in communal areas players use for gaming, but there are also spaces where members of the squad meet to talk and just pass the time. Here, it is common to see Alvaro Morata
team captain and one of the most popular members in the squad
He is so funny and takes care of us youngsters,” Williams added
Maybe the media don’t see this because when you have a microphone in front of you
I think all the younger players owe him a lot.”
There was a time when this sense of unity and harmony was missed in Spain. At the 2014 World Cup, then-manager Vicente del Bosque had to set up an urgent meeting with Iker Casillas and Xavi to try to ease tensions that had built up between Spain’s Barca and Real Madrid players at club level
“The other day I told Lamine that when I was 17
I was celebrating winning the Under-19 Copa del Rey with Madrid,” the 32-year-old said
“This kid is now important with Barcelona and Spain
but there are still fresh memories of their elimination from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — which fuelled the departure of Luis Enrique
Criticism focused most intensely on the ‘lack of a plan B’
Luis Enrique faced accusations of being too stubborn for persisting with a possession-oriented game which
Some of those old criticisms still hang in the air under new manager Luis de la Fuente — who was appointed in December 2022 and led Spain to the UEFA Nations League title in June last year
Several players have faced questions on the subject this week
“It is not the case that we always need to keep loyal to one style of playing
retaining possession and then losing the game,” Pedri said
“I prefer to have a clear style of playing and something you tend to follow,” added Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino
“But the style in this team relies on trying to be complete and adapt to different situations
Sometimes games bring you to paths you did not expect.”
Another media focus has centred on a supposed lack of star power compared to other nations — and to Spain’s golden age
“If Rodri was on social media and appeared in all the commercials
wouldn’t he be a world-class star?” he said
“If Dani Olmo was as recognised in Spain as he is in Germany, where Bayern Munich and Premier League teams want him
On Saturday, the time for talking will be over. Their first test in a difficult group comes against Croatia, with games against Italy and Albania to follow

The 2024 Nurnberger Burgpokal qualification season has reached its penultimate round at 2024 CDI Donaueschingen on 13 - 15 September 2024

With classes in three disciplines - dressage
driving - and a plethora of exhibition classes and plenty of entertainment in the trade fair
On a national level the CDI Donaueschingen includes the seventh of eight Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifiers and the finals of the Piaff Forderpreis for German Under 25 riders
The Nurnberger Burgpokal for developing Prix St Georges horses is a bastion on the German dressage scene
the show circuit and finals are a clear pathway for talented FEI level horses towards the top
Numerous future champions and Grand Prix team horses came through the Burgpokal system
For 2024 the Nurnberger Burgpokal circuit includes eight qualifiers (Hagen
The winners of each of the 8 qualifiers will compete in the finals in Frankfurt alongside the four highest scoring second placed riders at these qualifiers
So far qualified are Juliane Brunkhorst (Diamante Negro - 75,683% and La Belle Noire - 73,000%)
Dorothee Schneider (Barcelo OLD - 75,756%)
Charlott-Maria Schürmann (Life Time - 76,878%)

The second placed pair in Donaueschingen is Spaniard Borja Carrascosa aboard Filippo di Marco's 8-year old Italian bred Hanoverian Franky Di Fonteabeti (by Franklin x Wynton)
but that score is not high enough to be amongst the four high scoring second-placegetters to be considered for the finals
The 8th and final qualifier is scheduled for 17 - 20 October 2024 in Darmstadt-Kranichstein
The finals traditionally take place in Frankfurt
With one more show to go the three second-place finishing combinations already sure for a spot in Frankfurt are Charlott-Maria Schürmann (Dante’s Pearl - 73.659% in Hagen)

It was sweet revenge for Semmieke Rothenberger who won the 2024 Piaff Forderpreis finals at the CDI Donaueschingen after being snubbed from German team selection for the 2024 European U25 Championships
This is the second time that Rothenberger won the Finals
She did so the first time on horse Flanell in 2021
The Piaff Förderpreis held its "pilot project" in 2000 with finals staged in Leverkusen and won by Hubertus von Zedtwitz on Rubicon M. The first official Piaff Förderpreis was held in 2001 with the Finals in Stuttgart. The winner was Ellen Schulten-Baumer
For the first time in 24 years the finals were not held indoor in Stuttgart but outdoor at the CDI Donaueschingen on 12 - 15 September
The show management of the Finals and CHI Donaueschingen was in the hands of Matthias Rath's company Schafhof Connects

She scored 72.580% in the classic Grand Prix test which decided the winner
A mistake in the one tempi changes and a mediocre rein back kept the score from climbing higher
Donaueschingen is Farrington's second show of the year
Moritz Treffinger on Cadeau NoirYoung professional dressage rider Moritz Treffinger became the runner-up on Gestut Bonhomme's 14-year old Hanoverian stallion Cadeau Noir (by Christ x De Niro)
The third placed pair was Franziska Haase on the 16-year old Hanoverian De Nino (by Don Schufro x Sandro Hit) with 68.900%
Haase is based in the town Hellschen-Heringsand-Unterschaar
which is Germany's municipality with the longest name
Only seven riders showed up for the Finals instead of the usual 8
Franziska Haase on De Nino"It's a shame that only one pair from this year's European Championship
took part," said German U25 team trainer Sebastian Heinze
The horse is 17 years old and Helen wanted to take the opportunity to present him in the regular Grand Prix tour in Donaueschingen
In the last 17 years none of the winning combinations returned to win the title twice
Only two pairs ever won the Piaff Forderpreis twice: Ellen Schulten-Baumer on Gina Royal OLD in 2002 and 2003 and Matthias Rath on Renoir Unicef in 2006 and 2007

including two gold medals in the compound women’s and recurve men’s open team competitions, at the World Archery Para Championships in Donaueschingen
The compound team of Stepanida Artakhinova, Marina Lyzhnikova and Iuliia Alekseeva defeated home nation Germany in a dramatic shoot-off to claim gold
before the men’s recurve team defeated Korea in the final match of the day
Bato Tsydendorzhiev, Sergey Khutakov and Anton Zaypaev
who set a new 92-point world record earlier in the week
Russia also won a bronze medal and three silver medals, two of which belonged to Margarita Sidorenko
Sidorenko came second in the mixed team event, paired with Bato Tsydendorzhiev, and in the recurve women’s open team competition, with Svetlana Barantseva and Irina Rossiyskaya
Both lost finals were against China
The mixed team went top seeds Wu Chunyan and Shi Xu Cheng’s way, 6-2, then Chunyan, Lin Dandan and Gao Fangxia emerged on top after the final set of a full four-set match, in which the Russian team needed a nine to win with its last arrow.
“I shot quite well but I am always looking to improve and shoot higher scores in the future,” said Sidorenko. “It was a long day and I am feeling pretty tired, but I will strive to achieve the gold medal next time.”
“Individually, or as a team, we can always improve and we will go away and do that after this competition.”
Team events test not only an archer’s mental strength but the group’s strength, something Sidorenko says is vital to any team’s success: “You have to be mentally strong and try to overcome any bad shot you, or your teammate, may shoot.”
“We work well together and encourage each other. We are successful because we have that togetherness.”

The secondary tournament assigned all places that were not won through the main competition at the 2015 World Archery Para Championships
There was only one recurve men’s open place available in the secondary tournament and 14 athletes eligible to compete for it
Sawicki was knocked out of the main event by 48th-ranked Francisco Cordeiro in the third round
Piotr qualified as seed number 16 and it was a match that would have earned Poland a Rio quota place if he had won
Undeterred, Sawicki won his first two secondary tournament matches 6-0, 6-4, then defeated Barry Guider of Ireland before his final against Hasegawa, dropping just two sets combined in both matches.
“I was unsure of the qualification process going into the event but I always aim to do the same in any event,” explained Sawicki, saying he didn’t know what position would ensure a spot for Poland.
“I just want to shoot as well as possible and try to beat anyone that comes up against me. If that wins my country a quota place it is a bonus,“ he said.
Sawicki did admit to not knowing much about the archers he was shooting against in the secondary tournament, but didn’t feel any pressure in the critical knockout tournament.
“There was no pressure as I shot like normal,” he said. “I don’t like to overthink these situations. I always focus on only my performance. If I shoot well then it is all I can do and hopefully it is enough.”
The secondary Paralympic qualification was the final chance to earn quota places in the recurve men’s open category at the Donaueschingen worlds, and the 41 year old was happy that his home nation secured Rio representation.
“I am glad to win this tournament and to gain a place for Poland in Brazil, but I will always aim to win no matter what the reward,” he concluded.
The Höllentalbahn is a spectacular line through south-west Germany’s forests and magical towns
Enchanting stop-offs en route include gothic Freiburg and pretty Titisee lake
In the tucked away Black Forest town of Donaueschingen
three metre-deep wellspring in the town centre
encircled by a stone basin sculpted with zodiac symbols
the Danube – Donau in German – flows full tilt onwards for 1,771 miles to its mouth on the Black Sea
passing through the great cities of Vienna
There’s so much poetry in that journey from dark woodland to dark water
But while my trip started at this blessed pool
I was heading in the opposite direction – into a part of Germany’s south-west with which I was unfamiliar
Though the Black Forest is feted for its wild spaces
sense of remoteness and sweeping mountains – green in summer
top to bottom with snow-white thickets in the colder months – the region is easy to traverse year-round by boot
That’s good news for those who love discovering a new place by train
because the most compelling railway line here – the Höllentalbahn – begins in Donaueschingen
the Höllentalbahn has an equally gripping translation: the Hell Valley Railway
while super saver fares for short distances were priced at €9.90 – and this is set to continue
Car emissions charges have since been increased and passenger numbers on local services have shot up by a quarter
That sense of sustainable value was also apparent on the Höllentalbahn
but I broke up the 90-minute journey with multiple stops along the way
Before I boarded, there was time to discover more of Donaueschingen. From the train station, I followed the road to Haus Fürstenberg
walking in the footsteps of the last emperor of Germany
a regular visitor to the princely residence
the palace rises like a Loire Valley chateau
its yellow facade crested with a top-hat dome
home to a gilded travelling potty once owned by Napoleon
The atmosphere on the lakefront is fiesta-like, with timber-framed cuckoo clock shops, and pub landlords proffering foamy steinsNext door, taking over several town blocks, is Fürstenberg Brauerei
a baroque palace of a brewery from the 18th century
the beer became his majesty’s official beverage
My journey on the Höllentalbahn began shortly after
and following a quick transition from factories to farmland
the railway was soon in the thick of the Black Forest
To forge a straight route through the undulating highlands was impossible in 1901
so the Höllentalbahn ducks and weaves like a heavyweight boxer
then landing punches as it passes several worthy stops

it’s a popular escape for spa tourism from spring to autumn
when visitors come to get their skin buffed baby pink
But as the darkening days segue into the snows of winter
the style and pace of life on the water accelerate
from leisurely boat cruises that run until late October to ice skating at Christmas and new year
The atmosphere on the lakefront is fiesta-like
and restaurant menus filled with the trappings of the season
With the lake yet to freeze, I made do with a shoreline stroll, then settled in at Seehotel Wiesler hotel

Hinterzarten is the sort of village best suited to winter
Chimney smoke swirled from old-fashioned farmsteads
Byres stood ready with long-hipped roofs to withstand the wind and snow
A short walk from the train station, along a broad farm track, lies Ospelehof
one of the oldest steadings in these woods

Next to a copper kettle for churning out cheese
and walls were draped with cow hides and framed portraits of Martin’s herd of Highland cattle
but the topography is a challenge for them – and for me,” he said
we ate a platter of cheese intense with garlic from the surrounding wild lands
and claret-red beef salami and ham produced in Martin’s barn smokery

Photograph: Michael Abid/AlamyThe most memorable part of the journey arrived that same afternoon
when the rail line crossed a landscape of banded hills scythed by gorges and bridges
sweeping us over the stone arches of the Ravenna viaduct
Contrary to this sense of moving into the Underworld
the Höllentalbahn began its final descent through tunnels and twilight-lit trees
making its final stop at Freiburg station on the edge of the Black Forest
Passengers lurched off into the twinkling lights of the Altstadt
and I happily joined the throng on showpiece Münsterplatz
enjoying a pilsner and plate of roast goose and dumplings – a Black Forest dream
the culmination of my rail journey felt – almost – like a fairytale ending
USA's Kinga Kiss-Johnson captured the bronze medal in the women's recurve open at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games
“Archery got me out of the house in my darkest days ..
It became my physical and occupational therapy.”
US para-archer Kinga Kiss-Johnson certainly stands out from the crowd
She hopes to do so even more at the 2015 World Archery Para Championships
which begin Sunday (23 August) in Donaueschingen
Kiss-Johnson is coming off a bronze medal finish in the women’s recurve open at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games
She knows that facing the international competition in Donaueschingen 2015 will be tougher
“My coaches [have] prepared me and brought me to this level and now it is my turn to execute what they have taught me," she said
Kiss-Johnson is certainly no stranger to adversity
where she played college ball at Missouri State before she took the oath of citizenship to the US Army in 2007
she became one of the tallest service members in her US Army Company
Her intentions in serving her country were to keep one of her parents from deploying overseas following the 11 September attacks on the USA in 2001
9/11 occurred and my job allowed me to go into the military through a leave of absence,” Kiss-Johnson said
“My grandfather and my great-grandfather both were in the military
Having made the decision to leave her basketball career behind
back and brain injuries whilst serving in Afghanistan
“My injuries kept me from working in the military as a full-time career
and changed my life and my family’s lives,” she said

she was invited to a Military Paralympic Experience Camp and stumbled upon archery by coincidence
It was not the first sport she wanted to try
Kiss-Johnson was being held up by her occupational therapist with a PT belt to be able to stand and practice at the military base
since I am very competitive and there is no such word in my dictionary
“Archery got me out of the house in my darkest days when I was recovering from my injuries
She competed in the 2013 World Championships
“I love this sport and I am hoping to take it as far as I can,” she said
“I am really looking forward to competing with some of the best archers out there in the next few months with my ultimate goal being to podium in Rio 2016.”

but the level of competition was not incredibly high
Only four riders were able to score above 70% in the Grand Prix
top rider Isabell Werth had to retire Laurenti in the test and nine riders could not score higher than 65% including several major A-team riders
proved consistency aboard her 11-year old bay mare
edging out German GP new comer Beatrice Buchwald on Weihegold (72.780%)
In the Grand Prix Special Von Bredow won with 73.706% and referring Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen on Blue Horse stud's stallion Hotline to a second place with 73.353%
"Despite the opinion of others I have always believed in this horse," von Bredow commented about Zaire
We still need to gymnasticize more and she needs to gain strength

The British pair was behind by a single point after 12 of 16 arrows, but held their nerve against Guo Ying and Han Guifei
posting a score of 35 for the last end and taking the win by two
Frith and Walker were delighted that their long hours of preparation for the worlds was rewarded
It’s nice to know all that hard work has paid off,” said Frith. “It was quite nerve-racking
I don’t think I can quite believe it at the moment.”
Both Brits said they didn’t shoot their best in the gold medal match
but were happy with victory in the finals arena
The lead changed hands at every end in a close affair
but the British archers shot well when it seemed to matter
“We didn’t shoot as well as we can
but it was a matchplay situation and we got through it,” Frith explained
Both she and Walker compete for individual gold on Sunday in Donaeuschingen
The opportunity to get accustomed to the finals field for the mixed competition was not lost on the pair – though the atmosphere
“You have to work together as a team,” said Walker
the other has to try and carry them though those harder moments
It is good shooting with a teammate as the pressure is shared between the team
You try to enjoy the big moments and not feel any pressure.”
Mixed team competition will feature at its first Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016
Arriving in Brazil as reigning world champions won’t
add any extra pressure – but sharpen the Brit’s resolve instead
“I am looking forward to Rio and trying to add the Paralympic gold to our world championship success,” Walker finished
In the compound open mixed team gold medal match, the results were reversed, as Chinese pair Lin Yueshan and Cao Hanwen took revenge on the British squad, defeating Mel Clarke and John Stubbs.

New talent in South Korea’s Dae-Sung Jang will make his para-archery World Championships debut in Donaueschingen
Jang has been training at the Korean Sports Training Centre
South Korea’s Dae-Sung Jang has shown promise to represent his country at the World Archery Para Championships
which begin on Sunday (23 August) in Donaueschingen
Jang claimed a silver medal in the individual W1 open combined division at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon
It only took him less than two years to accomplish this result since stepping into the para-archery scene in 2013
because I had doubted whether I could make the podium in this short space of time,” Jang said
Jang still acknowledged the importance of having more experience
He hopes that will not hinder him at the World Championships
“I think the main reason why my compatriot rival Dong-Sub Koo took a victory over me was that he knew how to run his own game at such a big tournament,” Jang said
the-37-year-old decided to focus on his archery career by joining the newly founded Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation’s Business Para-Archery Team
there are four business para-archery teams in South Korea
The business team has allowed him to focus on the sport and practice anytime he wants
It especially helps that the team has its own para-archery field
I am very happy that my coach is helping me to work on honing techniques.”
I was attracted by the fact that the corporation was willing to support me to participate in international events more than once a year,” Jang said
Jang will go for medals in both individual and mixed-team events at the World Championships
Jang will join Incheon 2014 medallists Ok-Geum Kim and Koo
He will compete in his first World Championships, and with Rio 2016 qualification slots at stake, he admitted there is much stress.
“But, I am making preparations based on lessons that I learned throughout the Asian Para Games,” Jang said. “In particular, these days, I have been practicing in shooting while listening to loud music, in order to become used to the noise at a big competition venue.”
“What I am trying to do is to concentrate on my target, no matter where I am and whom I am contending with.”
However, even if he gains a qualification slot for his country for Rio 2016 at Donaueschingen 2015, Jang still needs confirmation that he is nominated to represent South Korea by the national selection process.
Throughout 2015, South Korean athletes are competing nationally at four selection matches. The final four candidates for the men’s individual event will vie for the chance to earn qualification slots for their country for Rio 2016 by entering a further three rounds of selection between March and April in 2016.
A world title would be huge for Jang’s Rio 2016 campaign, and he hopes to also hit big in November’s Asian Para Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
“I hope to end the year with a gold medal,” he said.
but the coaches of each team play a vital part in preparing them for international competition and potential success.
para archery provides the coaches of each nation a different proposition compared to that of their able-bodied counterparts
and one of those spoke about by many of the coaches is the dedication and passion needed to succeed – and the desire to train each day to the maximum
“You train people in para-archery just like you would anybody else
You look at their strengths and weaknesses and then you adapt,” USA coach Randi Smith explained
On the subject of potentially finding new archers she said: “I would be looking at alignment and a passion for the sport
If they enjoy the sport and want to improve then there is no difference.”
There is, however, a certain amount of creativity needed within the training schedule. Because of the requirements of different impairments, challenges arise. Para athletes with one arm or, in Matt Stutzman’s case
have to adapt to their approach to excel in archery
Matt delivered a poignant message: “If you persevere
who travelled to Donaueschingen without a coach
said they felt that coaching para archers requires a more flexible approach to basic technique
“In terms of training there are not many differences, but more problems can occur when you coach an impaired athlete,” said Marek Steiner, competing in the recurve men’s open competition in Donaueschingen. For example, those shooting with one leg may find stability more of an issue, in particular when it’s windy.
“For para archers you have to be prepared to adapt the training every day if needed, as weather conditions can play a part for certain impairments.”
Across sports, athletes give up day jobs or other pursuits to find excellence.
But, for team managers, organising the support required for those athletes to spend their time effectively training is also a consideration.
“We need more resources because the majority cannot shoot or train on their own,” explained Mike Peart, head coach of the British Paralympic archery team. “Para athletes require full-time coaches, especially with the standard of the sport increasing every single year.”
The Great Britain team was successful at London 2012 and has one of the biggest squads at Donaueschingen 2015. It was important for the nation to build on the successes of the last Paralympic Games.
Mike concluded: “You have to train harder, adjust fine details and simply carry on improving, because the rest of the competitors will be doing similar. That’s the same in both able-bodied and para-athlete competitions.”
