Most athletes playing a sport they love will tell you how fast any given season goes by.
That was not the case for Ava Dorsten and Kami Spang
two standout components of the Mariemont girls soccer team
the 2017 preps soccer season was without question one of the longest two-month spans ever.
Dorsten and Spang are both back in blue and yellow jerseys this season
They are upbeat and optimistic as they gear up for a home-turf battle against Cincinnati Hills League rival Madeira
Rewind a year ago and both were glued to the sidelines with season-ending injuries.
was a key freshman for the 2016 Warriors club that went 12-3-3
good enough for a second-team CHL nod.
More: Heart & Hustle: Senior RB Ty Mincy is back at Mt. Healthy, feels right at home
Playing club soccer prior to her junior year
Dorsten arrived home from a tournament in New Jersey and had three days of tryouts
On the final day of tryouts, a routine stroll down the soccer field turned into a stumble and a torn ACL.
"You could hear the snap," Dorsten recalls.
The setback happened just one month before the start of Mariemont's preseason workouts
The midfielder explained that watching her teammates from afar was more grueling than any of the physical pain caused by the tear
"Mentally it was more challenging because watching everyone play for 90 minutes and being able to practice was really tough," Dorsten said
"Not being able to be out there to help my team was really tough
just doing normal workouts that I've been doing for forever."
Dorsten was able to combat the mental side of the injury by leaning on the support of her sister
a senior this season and a two-time CHL first-teamer.
"I would go to my team's tournaments and she'd text me before we played and she's like 'hey
but you're still a huge part of the team and you're gonna be there supporting everyone
The tricky recovery timetable was a calendar year for Dorsten
She ditched her knee brace on June 4 and finally felt 100 percent again
Dorsten made her first post-injury appearance for Mariemont in the Warriors' season-opening win over Seven Hills on Aug
"This is the first we've had a chance to really see her step up and play," Mariemont head coach Mike Haney said
She's that player that can make that team better by being on the field
She's having a great season so far and is one of the keys to us being successful."
"It was just so much fun to be back on the field. High school season is a completely different feel than club
girls in my grade and the freshmen and sophomores who are younger than me and being able to set a good example as an upperclassmen," she said.
whose older sister Kyleigh is also a senior for the Warriors
is still battling the injuries that kept her off the Kusel Stadium turf in 2017
The school season ended in late October 2016 and Spang suffered a tear in her groin when she resumed playing in January
then a strained quad ended her sophomore season at Mariemont after just five games and her entire club season.
I was kicking the ball in warm-ups and it felt like my leg snapped in half
"I am playing with pain now and just hoping to be fully recovered soon."
Haney said Spang is another game-changer whose value is through the roof
"She's got speed that's unmatched and a tenacity that's hard to match
She's one of those players that other teams have to plan around
We're just a better team with her out on the pitch," he said.
Spang said having Dorsten by her side last season eased some of the pain of being forced into the year-long spectator role.
especially my close friend," she said.
Anxious is how Spang describes her emotion before Mariemont's battle with Madeira
she forgets a few of the arduous opponents the conference has to offer
the CHL is a gauntlet of heavy-duty competition with a pair of state-ranked teams on tap.
Mariemont has recorded 20-straight winning seasons under Haney
despite a 130-56-23 record and three district titles over that span. The Warriors have been conference runner-up three times (twice in the past three years) and have watched foes Madeira (2010) and Indian Hill (2017) capture state championships.
"The road goes through Madeira and Indian Hill, year after year after year," Haney said. "We're always in the mix, Wyoming's always in the mix, Taylor's often in the mix. But Indian Hill is defending state champs, the top-ranked team in the state right now
We gotta take it to them the nights we play them."

Irish Grand Prix team rider Judy Reynolds has decided to move her business from Dorsten to her trainer Johann Hinnemann's yard
Judy Reynolds first trained with Gisele and Heike Holstein in Ireland before deciding to leave her home country Ireland for Germany in 2002 to test her mettle against stiffer competition
At the time she rode Russian bred Trakehner Rathbawn Valet and mare Burgfraulein and moved to the Munich area in Bavaria to train with Irish Anna Merveldt(-Steffens)
Judy ended up competing Valet at the 2006 World Equestrian Games and Burgfraulein at the 2007 European Championships
Through Merveldt she got introduced to coach Johann Hinnemann
For four years Judy worked with Anna until the latter decided to relocate to Italy
Initially Judy would be in Germany for the "season" and home in Ireland for the winters
Judy stayed in Munich on her own for one more year and commuted to Hinnemann in Voerde for training
Judy moved to Krusterhof and remained with Hinnemann for 3.5 years
and Rathbawn Valet to Grand Prix level with her top horse Vancouver as the rising talent
With Remember she rode the 2010 World Equestrian Games and 2011 European Championships after which she sold him to Gregory Tackx in Holland
With Vancouver at the 2016 OlympicsAt the start of 2012 Judy accepted the offer to join Irish show jumper Jessica Kürten at Edouard de Rothschild's yard in Ferrieres-en-Brie in France
but after eight months she returned to Hünxe
and shared a yard with jumping rider Bertram Allen
With Bertram Allen's business expanding and more horses arriving in his barn
Judy got cramped and went independent with her business at Gut Hohenkamp in Dorsten
In January 2023 German professional Grand Prix rider Stefanie Wolf decided to leave her employer of 15 years
This left the head trainer spot at Krusterhof vacant and Judy has agreed to fill that spot alongside basing her business out of Hinnemann's stable
Judy on Faisao at the 2023 CDI SInt-Truiden
supported by husband Patrick Heavey"I am moving my yard to Krüsterhof," Judy confirmed to Eurodressage
"I will base my horses and client’s horses there
It works well as I am riding Rockman Royal for Johann already and the move will allow me to take on more visiting students for training as well as grow overall
I am very looking forward to it as I was based there full time for a number of years up until 2012 so it is a bit like going home."
This year Reynolds has been campaigning horses For Fun (by Furstenball x Maizauber)

Ray White Whangamatā owner Reuben van Dorsten (left) hands Doug Walters a cheque for the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust after the annual Ray White Charity Golf Day and auction
The annual Ray White Charity Golf Day and auction at Whangamatā Golf Club broke a local record raising more than $27,000 for three charities
was well supported by the coastal community with 27 teams – 108 players – teeing off
The funds were divided between Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Hato Hone St John health shuttle.
The first local fundraising golf event was organised by Ray White Whangamatā real estate agent Mike Jeffcoat and the previous owners in 1991.
When Alex and Reuben van Dorsten took over the business six years ago they wanted to continue the charity tradition.
“The numbers are always really staggering and the dollar amount that [the charities] need to sustain that is always quite large,” Alex said.
“This year we raised over $27,000 – a new record for us. It was only possible with the support from all the local businesses and all our teams coming along to enjoy the day and being so generous with their bidding.”
Alex said the community buy-in to the tournament has been amazing and the team was astounded by how many businesses and locals get involved.
RMHC keeps families close to their sick children while they receive treatment in hospitals away from home, at no cost.
“It’s so worth it. Ronald McDonald House is the charity of choice for Ray White, so we’ve taken that on. For us, we’ve got a few connections to people in town that have used Ronald McDonald House,” Alex said.
In 2023, it cost RMHC New Zealand more than $749,000 to support Waikato families, covered entirely through the generosity of supporters.
This resulted in 3204 nights of accommodation provided to families from the Waikato region alone.
Three years ago, the organisers partnered with Doug Walters from the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust.
“Doug helps us out a lot on this golf day and his organisation raises money for ongoing operational costs for our region’s callouts.
“He wanted to get involved and having him onboard has been great – another really worthy charity that we so need being in the remote area that we are.
“Hato Hone St John are also always immensely grateful for our donation towards running the health shuttle in town.”
The golf day started with a barbecue BBQ before a 12pm shotgun start on the course.
Lunch was provided on the course by local Smoky Pallet Freehouse while Lion New Zealand supplied beverages.
“We drew a raffle, had silent auctions, announced the winning team and then had larger prizes up for auction,” Alex said.
“This year we had some wonderful donated prizes from local businesses around the Coromandel, including golf rounds, fishing charters, a TV and a signed All Blacks jersey.
“Everyone loved it, they all said it was the best day. It wasn’t super sunny, but it was a nice warm day. We get lots of regulars that come back every year, they just love the tournament.”
Alex extended thanks to Doug, Ray White Whangamatā‘s Kiera Curd for her organisation skills and the Whangamatā Golf Club for the use of their facility.
Now leasing three new AW 169 helicopters, Doug said the level of emergency care will be far higher than what Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust has ever had.
“These aircraft are far more efficient, faster, highly specified technically and highly medically equipped,” Doug said.
The new helicopters will take about 17 minutes to fly from Ardmore, Auckland to the Coromandel region.
Specialist care will be transported to the callout, and treatment of the patient will happen straight away on board the helicopter.
A heart attack callout would have a cardiac specialist onboard while a car crash might have a trauma specialist.
In October, there were 22 callouts to the region which is mostly serviced by the Auckland helicopter but Bay of Plenty and Waikato helicopters are back-ups.

Gerrit-Jan van Dorsten and man who rented farmhouse arrested on suspicion of ‘depriving people of their liberty’
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
The father of a family found by police in a secret basement below an isolated farmhouse was previously a member of a controversial religious sect, and may have tried to start a cult
Gerrit-Jan van Dorsten, 68, is a former member of the Unification movement, which was set up by Sun Mung Moon in 1954 and whose followers are sometimes known as “Moonies”
Police confirmed they were investigating whether religious faith was involved in the family's alleged incarceration
Mr van Dorsten was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of “depriving people of their liberty
harming the health of others and money laundering”
“We have reason to believe that the six people involved did not stay at the premises out of free will
We are investigating whether following a certain belief in life or faith has led to the living situation in which the people were found,” the police statement said
according to the Agence France-Presse news agency
Mr van Dorsten’s six children were found by police after the eldest
drank five beers and told staff he needed help
When officers searched the farmhouse in Ruinerwold
they eventually found a door hidden behind a cupboard which led to a secret basement where they found Mr van Dorsten and the five remaining children who had apparently been held there for almost a decade
The 58-year-old Austrian tenant at the farmhouse
has also been arrested on similar charges to Mr van Dorsten
He was reportedly also a former member of the Unification church
though the organisation has not confirmed this
The Unification church said in a statement it was “deeply alarmed to hear of the family being held in inhumane conditions on a farmhouse in the Netherlands.” Mr van Dorsten "was briefly a member of our movement in the mid-1980s"
The church's statement also revealed that Mr van Dorsten’s brother
remained “a long-time member” of the movement
and is quoted as saying “I have not heard from my brother since 1984”
we are unable to confirm any records of Mr Josef Brunner
having ever been associated in any way with the Unification church
We are grateful that the six victims in this tragedy are now under the care of the local authorities and pray they will be able to heal from their ordeal with time and professional help.”
Willem Koetsier, a Unification Church member in Amsterdam, also told the paper that after Mr van Dorsten had left the group, he travelled to Germany where it lost track of him. Mr Koetsier said he thought the man “together with someone else” had since started their own cult.
When police found Mr van Dorsten in the secret basement, he was apparently ill and in bed, having suffered a suspected stroke two years ago.
According to Algemeen Dagblad, at the time Mr van Dorsten joined the Unification movement with his brother in the 1980s, he ascribed “supernatural powers” to himself.
His wife and the mother of nine known children died in 2004. Three of Mr van-Dorsten’s children have come forward and said they left the family eight years ago. It is possible he has even more children, the newspaper reports.
Before the family moved to the farm in Ruinerwold, they had reportedly stayed at a caravan park where the children were filmed performing cult rituals including walking in circles. This apparently attracted unwanted attention, leading them to move to the secluded farm.
Mr van Dorsten’s children, all aged over 18, are now in the care of the Dutch authorities.
Gerrit-Jan van Dorsten’s page features video of rowing machine he built himself and posts about his daily workout routine and gardening tips
A father used his Facebook page to share mundane updates about his life while allegedly holding six of his children captive in a secret basement for almost a decade as reports say he was “waiting for the end of time”
Gerrit-Jan van Dorsten
posted a video of a rowing machine he had built himself
wrote about his daily workout routine and offered gardening tips on his social media profile
As officers searched the isolated farmhouse in Ruinerwold, Drenthe, they found a hidden door behind a cupboard which led to a basement where they found Mr van Dorsten and five of his children, who had apparently been held there for almost a decade.
Josef Brunner, the 58-year-old Austrian tenant of the farmhouse, has also been arrested on similar charges.
Many of the posts on Mr van Dorsten’s Facebook page, which he made under the pseudonym “John Eagles”, appeared to be photos of his garden and instructions about how to grow fruit and vegetables.
One video shows him using a homemade rowing machine in near the farmhouse where his children were later discovered, which he says is “now part of my daily exercise routine”.
In another he displays a pair of homemade moccasins and asks: “Walking in your own shoes, isn’t that an important thing in life?”
He also posted a picture of himself in his “daily Tai Chi / body training” pose and shared at least a dozen articles about North Korea.
The page lists his interests as “Philosophy, Music history and Psychology” and describes him as a self-employed artist working on “Sustainable building, Organic farming, Children’s toys”.
The majority of the posts were made before 2016.
When police searched the farmhouse, they found Mr van Dorsten apparently ill in bed after he was left bedridden by a stroke nearly three years ago.
Police said they were investigating whether religious faith was behind the confinement of the family.
Mr van Dorsten was a former member of the Unification Church, whose followers are sometimes referred to as “Moonies” after their founder Sun Mung Moon, who established the movement in South Korea in 1954.
The church said it was “deeply alarmed to hear of the family being held in inhumane conditions on a farmhouse in the Netherlands” and confirmed Mr van Dorsten left in 1987.
The statement also said Mr van Dorsten’s brother, Derek, remained “a long-time member” and quoted him saying: “I have not heard from my brother since 1984”.
Mrn van Dorsten appeared before an examining magistrate on Monday and was remanded in custody for 14 days.

director of the Institute of Virology at Berlin's Charité hospital
is pictured after a news conference in Berlin on March 26
to comment on the spread of the novel coronavirus in Germany
German scientist Christian Drosten was soon in great demand
Drosten is one of the world's leading experts on coronaviruses
he and a colleague were the first Western scientists to discover SARS after China hid information about that outbreak
Since January, his team at the Institute for Virology at Berlin's Charité hospital has been working overtime to develop the world's first publicly available test for COVID-19
German media have pestered him for interviews
and the way your statements are abbreviated there and how sometimes also your message is completely diluted frustrated me," Drosten
a program manager at public broadcaster Northern German Radio
Grundei felt the public wasn't getting information it needed about this new virus and the nature of its threat to humanity
He thought to himself: The world's top expert on coronaviruses lives here
Why not do a daily podcast where people could ask him questions
But he wasn't sure if professor Drosten — who was juggling coronavirus research and advising European leaders — would have time to respond
"And only a few hours later I got an answer in which he said
The time it took from idea to execution: three days
After just two daily episodes in late February
The podcast has gained popularity at a time when confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Germany have risen above 67,000
and while German politicians have been slow to issue public gathering and social distancing orders
That has left the German public craving every bit of reliable information about this virus as possible
an NDR science journalist interviews Drosten and then poses questions from the audience
Drosten's approach is of a meticulous scientist
who hypothesizes and questions what we think we know about the virus
In episode 15
fit adults were in critical condition from COVID-19
"The latest research suggests that when the virus starts in the throat
there's a degree of time to build up immunity before it progresses to the lungs
where it can do more damage," Drosten tells the podcast host
it is just a hypothesis — also suggests why a number of young and fit patients are in critical condition
It's possible that when the initial virus skips the throat and starts in the lungs
there's no time for immunity to build up before damage is done."
In another episode, Drosten and the host discuss the French Health Ministry's warning that ibuprofen might worsen the effects of the coronavirus, a claim that global health experts said had no scientific basis
Drosten says the information veers into to the fake news realm
"other coronaviruses and cold viruses do not react negatively to ibuprofen
We'd surely know this by now if the evidence were conclusive."
Drosten's open-ended scientific decoding has been popular with German audiences
Podcast director Grundei says the podcast's analytics show most people listen to the entire 30 minutes
He says listeners hang on to every word of a man who has been advising Chancellor Angela Merkel throughout the course of this pandemic
"The idea that all people in Germany have the same consultant as the political leaders have in Germany
He says the longer format of a podcast is a good way to explain the science behind this virus so that the public makes well-informed decisions
"And the way you can be differential and you can say a little bit more and things are not cut out," says Drosten
I can only do that on this very topic that I work on."
And that's made Drosten a celebrity in Germany
it's a little unsettling and I'm not happy about it," Drosten says
when another of the podcast's hosts asks him about his budding fame in his home country
"It feels like I'm being held up as a kind of figurehead
This hype particularly worries me when my words are taken out of context."
And that's why Das Coronavirus-Update hasn't been translated into English yet
The World Health Organization has urged him to translate it quickly so the rest of the world can benefit from it
But professor Drosten insists it would have to be done by a fellow scientist so the rest of the world can have the most accurate information of a virus that threatens us all

"I Never Cry" is one of Alice Cooper's biggest hits
a shockingly reflective — dare I say vulnerable — soft-rock ballad inspired by the struggle with alcoholism that found the singer checking into rehab a year after the single peaked at No
And lest you think the tender nature of that record meant the shock-rock legend had gone soft on us
it's from an album titled "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell."
That hit album arrived in the summer of '76
the Phoenix siblings who perform as Dorsten
So they never experienced the culture shock of hearing the man who sang "I Love the Dead" as the voice behind one of the prettiest records anybody made that year
But now they've released their own recording of the song — a full-scale reimagining complete with a new melody and haunting electronic textures
Taylor Swift Eras Tour launch: 5 magic moments at State Farm Stadium that Arizonans saw first
Why the Dorstens chose to record Alice Cooper's 'I Never Cry'The 20-something siblings recorded the track as a tribute to Cooper
a Cortez High School track star who met his original bandmates in Phoenix and now lives in Paradise Valley
The Dorstens have connections to both songwriters
Sophie works at Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center
giving vocal lessons and teaching a songwriting class
Alex has served as a judge for Alice Cooper's annual Proof Is in the Pudding competition
"I've been part of Alice Cooper's Solid Rock since I was 13," Sophie says
And I see how much Alice does for teens in our community
And he and his wife are always so kind and down to earth."
"So we just thought it would be kind of cool to cover a song that reflects both of those connections," Sophie says

The siblings weren't familiar with "I Never Cry" before deciding to come up with their own version
'What would be a cool song from Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner that they wrote together?'" Sophie says
"And I just thought we could do something interesting to it
Alex and I heard the song and we were like
We could mix some cool new elements into this.'"
"I think the best part was having the creative freedom of taking the bones of the song and making something new," Sophie says
What Alice Cooper has to say about the 'I Never Cry' coverAlice Cooper says he likes what the Dorstens have done with his song
“It’s always a compliment when somebody chooses to record a song that you have written and performed and then adds their own particular style to it," he told The Arizona Republic
"My version could be a broken-hearted guy sitting at a bar at 3 a.m
More like an angel sitting on a cloud brushing her hair in slow motion
