Terrier mix with a nose for adventure and I got to spend a tail-wagging day in Düsseldorf with my human family The city is known for its “Little Tokyo” area packed with dog-friendly activities that made every moment memorable We arrived in Düsseldorf on a sunny morning and my paws tingled with excitement as we headed to the Rhine River promenade to stretch our legs after the car ride and I loved watching boats glide by as I trotted with my family I could hear the gentle lapping of the river against the banks and the laughter of people enjoying their morning and we exchanged friendly sniffs and wagging tails ensuring I stayed safe and close to my humans I was relieved that we got to the restaurant early even though there was a small line outside the door already enjoying all the amazing smells coming from inside and my family was able to peruse the menu while waiting to order Naniwa offers a range of small plates but is best known for their ramen The staff welcomed me with a fresh bowl of water making me feel right at home while my humans enjoyed their meal Mom was sure to sneak me a few bites of veggies from her ramen I felt like a connoisseur of fine cuisine tasting Japanese food for the first time we walked to Bing Go for some matcha ice cream and Taiyaki I learned that it is a sweat batter cooked into a fish shape and then filled with warm cream or chocolate green and black matcha desserts and the joyful expressions of patrons made it a perfect stop for some delightful people-watching who could not resist my charming personality and wagging curly tail We ended the day with a peaceful walk through Nordpark This park was a paradise for a dog like me but I much prefer to adventure with my humans where the lush greenery and trickling water made me feel calm and content with their beautiful arrangements of stones provided a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city I loved the peaceful surroundings and the chance to stroll leisurely with my family The koi pond was especially fascinating; I watched the colorful fish swim gracefully and I did my best to not jump in with them….just to play I remained on my leash since the park requires it ensuring I could safely enjoy the surroundings we took one last moment to reflect on our day before heading home feeling grateful for the wonderful experiences and how welcoming Düsseldorf was Düsseldorf proved to be a fantastic place for a day out with my family offering a variety of activities that were both fun and relaxing From the bustling Rhine promenade to the tranquil Japanese Garden every part of our day was filled with joy and new experiences I am already wagging my tail in anticipation of our next adventure Here’s to more adventures and happy tails ahead German mascot Sport development is important to ensure relevance, entertainment and excitement continue to drive competitions by using new technology, processes, systems, research and data to enhance the appeal and impact of competitions across the globe. A take-off zone for horizontal jumps is among a raft of innovations being developed and tested, with the concept having formed part of the competition programme at the ISTAF Indoor Düsseldorf meeting on 9 February and the ISTAF Indoor 2025 meeting in Berlin on 14 February. While full reports are being compiled, early feedback indicates that the take-off zone test had a clear impact on competition flow and spectator experience. Across both events, fouls dropped to 13% from a historical average of 32%, and is likely to decrease further as athletes prepare and train for this new configuration. Spectator surveys showed an overall preference for the take-off zone in future competitions. The divide, however, was striking: more than two-thirds of casual fans favoured the innovation, while those actively involved in the sport leaned just as strongly towards the traditional board. Continued testing will provide additional insights into the preferences of various stakeholder groups. Malaika Mihambo (© ISTAF Indoor / Kenny Beele) “I’m excited to share my experience with the take-off zone at the ISTAF meeting,” said two-time world long jump champion Malaika Mihambo, who won in Düsseldorf with a 6.87m leap. “As a long jumper, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the difference wasn’t as significant as I had expected. This experience reinforced my understanding that long jump is about much more than just hitting the board. “I appreciate the concept of utilising the entire board, as it enhances momentum and provides better feedback while allowing me to choose my own take-off point. However, this approach also makes it more challenging for both athletes and spectators to estimate distances. “Clearly, the system still needs refinement to truly outperform the traditional method. The key question remains: How can we make horizontal jumps safer for athletes while also making them more engaging for spectators, both in the stadium and at home? “Of course, there is still room for improvement—but that’s exactly what a pilot programme is for: testing new ideas. It will take several iterations to find the optimal solution, and I’m open to exploring different concepts along the way.” Early data suggests the take-off zone delivers the expected 10-centimetre improvement in distances. The tests also provided clear indications of athletes adjusting run-up strategy. With both events also measuring jumps by traditional rules, the foul rate according to traditional rules hit 66% – a high number under normal conditions. This suggests athletes are adopting a high-risk strategy, knowing the risk of fouling is lower. “World Athletics is putting innovation at the forefront of its 2025 strategic agenda, and the take-off zone is just one of the many innovations we are developing and testing,” said World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon. “Tests like this will help to determine which potential innovations make it into further implementation, and they are a good opportunity to get feedback from athletes and fans, so we are pleased to be able to share this first round of updates. Long jumpers competing with the take off zone in Berlin (© ISTAF Indoor / Tilo Wiedensohler) The take-off zone for horizontal jumps is just one in a series of innovations being tested as part of World Athletics’ four-year business strategy. Other innovations at both the macro and micro level of the sport include the launch of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in 2026, reconfiguration of the summer season and insights-driven timetable principles, as well as instant results, new events such as the mixed 4x100m relay and steeplechase mile, fan predictions, and combined events consultation. Further information on these developments can be found below and on a dedicated innovation section of the World Athletics website, to be launched in the coming months. World Athletics’ four-year strategy Pioneering Change (2024-2027) prioritises innovation through key initiatives aimed at transforming athletics and enhancing its global appeal and value. As part of this effort, World Athletics established a research and development unit, which began operations at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. The unit follows a structured approach, placing testing and analysis at the heart of its innovation process. The R&D unit allows a structured process to introduce and refine new ideas in athletics. It all starts with identifying challenges and opportunities, ensuring that any innovation is based on real needs within the sport. This is done through a thorough research process including for example market research, focus groups, emotional impact analysis and big data analysis. Once a challenge is defined, the team develops theories and models to explore potential solutions. These ideas are then tested in controlled environments, with input from stakeholders to refine and adapt them. If the concept shows promise, it moves into pilot testing within competitions, allowing for real-world evaluation. Throughout this stage, ongoing consultation and adjustments help fine-tune the innovation. The final step is a go/no-go decision: successful initiatives are rolled out in a controlled manner, while those that don’t meet expectations are discontinued. This approach ensures that change is deliberate, tested and refined before being fully adopted. The process allows for thoughtful planning, effective execution and continuous improvement. By combining structured research with real-world testing, World Athletics ensures that every innovation has the best chance of making a lasting impact on the sport. Following the World Athletics Council’s request for a data-driven approach to innovation and development, the R&D unit was launched at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. This broad initial data sampling provided a strong foundation for identifying challenges and opportunities. Some initiatives are already being tested, while others are in the pipeline for future development. Through analysis of fan behaviour and post-event feedback, we have managed to identify key factors that influence the spectator experience – both in stadiums and on TV. These insights have helped refine event scheduling and identify elements of the sport that capture audience attention, as well as aspects that may need adjustment. A large part of our ongoing work is shaped by these findings, ensuring that we continue to create an engaging and well-structured competition format. At top level, almost every third attempt in the long jump is a foul. By round six, the likelihood of an athlete fouling is twice as high as the likelihood of him/her improving. Biometric emotional analyses and surveys do not support the claim that the risk of fouling is an interesting element of the horizontal jumps. The theory being tested is that by reducing the number of fouls, the entertainment value of the horizontal jumps will increase. These tests are ongoing. Relays are the most popular events among fans. In some competitions, a mixed relay offers a simpler way to include relays without the complexity of staging separate men’s and women’s races. The test aims to determine:- Whether the mixed 4x100m adds excitement by introducing complex handovers between athletes with significantly different top speeds.- Whether the format enhances competitiveness by narrowing the performance gap between nations, allowing more countries to field a strong quartet, and increase the importance of dedicated relay training. The take-off zone has been tested at multiple competitions, most recently at the World Indoor Tour meetings in Düsseldorf and Berlin. The primary goal of these in-competition tests has been to gauge fan reactions. While more research is needed for definitive conclusions, early results show a slight majority of spectators favour the take-off zone for future competitions. However, opinions vary significantly by background – 70% of casual fans prefer the take-off zone, whereas the ratio flips among those actively involved in the sport (athletes, coaches, etc.). The 4x100m mixed relay will be tested at the World Athletics Relays in 2025, and at select other meetings this year. For the World Relays the athlete order will be female-female-male-male, but other orders may be tested at subsequent competitions. Following testing, athlete and coach feedback will be used for evaluation. Our analysis shows that while the steeplechase can be highly engaging for fans, its excitement level fluctuates more than for other track events. To assess the impact of a shorter distance, we are conducting tests to evaluate its effect on unpredictability, excitement and athlete safety. At the World Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 we will test predictive modelling across all disciplines with three key objectives:- Improve forecast accuracy beyond current methods.- Leverage predictions for both information and entertainment.- If accuracy is significantly enhanced, explore future applications for seeding, competition reviews, and qualification formats to increase competitiveness in preliminary rounds. As part of our data sampling, we have gathered multiple data sets related to combined events; not only from the international top level, but also across all levels of the sport, including grassroots participation. The intention is to share this information with the wider community later this year and provide insights for discussion of the status of combined events. In recent decades, championship durations have shortened while the number of disciplines and athletes has increased. Despite a 25% rise in individual athletes and the addition of new disciplines and formats such as repechage rounds, the Paris Olympics had almost five hours less competition than LA 1984. Similarly, the 2023 World Athletics Championships featured 19% more individual athletes than 2013, yet took place in a shorter timeframe. This calls for new ways of presenting our competitions, where ‘more’ is presented in a more time-efficient way. Several initiatives are aimed at making our competitions able to showcase more athletes in a more appealing way. Among these initiatives is achieving greater efficiency in timing and measurements. On average, 25% of a long throws competitions is spent waiting for the measurements, which has an impact on the fan experience at home and in the stadium. We plan to roll out several new initiatives in the coming years, looking to make timing and measurements more efficient. Among other items identified for further study, we will be looking at disciplines and formats such as the 200m hurdles, street and off-road running formats, false start rules, and height progression protocols in the vertical jumps. Peter Lynch broke the Irish marathon record to finish third in Düsseldorf on Sunday morning, clocking 2:09:36 in only his second competitive run over the classic distance. The 27-year from Kilkenny City Harriers eclipsed the previous mark of 2:09:42 set last October by Hiko Tonosa when finishing third in the Dublin Marathon. Lynch also improved his previous best by over eight minutes, the 2:17:40 he ran on his debut in Chicago last October. Lynch had gone to Düsseldorf in excellent form, having run 45:59 for 10 miles in the United States earlier this month. That broke the Irish record for that distance which had stood to John Treacy since 1993, when he ran 46:25. Treacy did run a marathon best of 2:09:15 to finish third in the 1989 Boston Marathon, a time that doesn’t count for record purposes due to the net downhill gradient of the Boston course. Düsseldorf was won by Alex Meier from the US in 2:08:32, ahead of Benson Mutiso from Kenya, who clocked 2:08:48. Fearghal Curtin from Cork also ran a fine ran race to finish fourth in 2:11:35, his first marathon finish after dropping out of the Seville Marathon last year after 31km. Lynch was trailed off the back of leading group just after 15km, racing solo most of the way from there. His 2:09:36 is also inside the B-standard for the World Championships in Tokyo in September. The former student at the University of Tulsa also clocked 61:15 for the half marathon in Houston earlier this year and is clearly benefiting from the move up to the longer distances on the road.
