Luca Guadagnino’s remake (more reimagining) of Dario Argento’s cult Giallo horror Suspiria landed at Venice Film Festival today (September 1) with two press screenings ahead of its public world premiere in Venice tonight

with several walk-outs during one of today’s screenings
but the reception to Guadagnino and his cast - including Tilda Swinton
Mia Goth and Jessica Harper - at the packed-out press conference was rapturous
Questions immediately veered towards the character of Dr
a central figure in the film said to be played by unknown German actor Lutz Ebersdorf
there have been strong rumours that Ebersdorf is in fact Swinton (who officially only plays one character in the film
the matriarchal Madame Blanc) in prosthetics
and recent reports have even suggested that she may play one or two more characters in its latter stages
Swinton presented a letter to attending press
which suggested he was a retired psychoanalyst living in Berlin
The letter stated that he was “a private person” and that he “strongly suspects” Suspiria is the only film he will ever appear in

As soon as the credits rolled and the lights went up in the theater Sunday
an audience member asked Jessica Harper if she had ever seen Swinton and Ebersdorf in the same place at the same time
and Fantastic Fest creative director Evrim Ersoy then dismissed the question as a “bad” one
when asked more specifically about the significance of Klemperer’s role in the film
Harper and Kajganich were able to shed a bit more light
Though he has no counterpart in Dario Argento’s original film
the Klemperer character is not insignificant
The film—which is otherwise almost entirely populated by female characters—opens and closes with him

So even as Klemperer digs deeper into the mysteries of the witches and observes them both figuratively and literally
never view the story through a man’s eyes—because
there’s no forgetting that it’s Swinton in this role
especially since the first film operated fine without it
in the film’s most poignant interlude—had a theory
“If you watch Guadagnino’s other films like Call Me by Your Name and A Bigger Splash,” she said
“you’ll notice a heavy dose of sentimentality.” The original Suspiria has none of that
So it’s very much in keeping with their previous work
for Kajganich and Guadagnino to weave a heart-tugging love story into a larger
And if the filmmakers were so insistent on eliminating the male gaze from their retelling of Suspiria
why not make the Klemperer role a female one
Kajganich once again underlined how vital it is for Klemperer to be an outsider
there would always be the slight possibility that this character—played by Tilda Swinton or not—could join in with the coven
But as an observer and occasional passive witness to atrocities
the Klemperer character can play a key role in any story about the rise of a fascistic regime
without the people who fail to resist them
“We’re living in an age when the silent observer is perhaps more important than ever,” he said
And as an older man whose life was forever shattered by the Holocaust
A woman playing the film’s only significant male role makes plenty of sense within the kind of narrative Kajganich and Guadagnino hoped to tell
But while it’s a little distracting that the woman in question was someone as recognizable as Swinton
the coy guessing game involved in marketing the role is far more confounding
Why not just come right out and say from the start it’s Swinton
another mystery presents itself when a third character—under even heavier layers of makeup and prosthetics—appears to gleefully chew up the scenery
Is the 2018 version of coven leader Helena Markos (played by an uncredited Lela Svasta in the 1977 film) yet another role for Tilda Swinton
I strongly suspect yes; there is no other actress listed for the role
Playing not one but three distinct and challenging roles
Perhaps only Swinton was up to that kind of acting witchcraft

Jozef Klemperer (theorized as the male character Swinton is also playing in the film) is credited to an 82-year-old German actor named Lutz Ebersdorf
who interestingly enough has no other credits on IMDb
The mysterious actor does have a bio on the site
which details his life before taking on his first acting role

The actor and director Luca Guadagnino have been denying that Swinton is playing the elderly
instead attributing that role to a reclusive figure called Lutz Ebersdorf
Guadagnino even called the rumours ‘fake news’

confirming that she was in fact playing Lutz Ebersdorf playing Dr
