Every year at Sun 'n Fun one or two planes generate a buzz that sparks everyone’s interest. This year, that plane is the Scale Wings SW-51
What distinguishes this 70% replica of the iconic P-51 Mustang fighter of World War II is the unbelievable attention to detail
The whole airframe is made from carbon fiber composite
but you have to get within 18 inches of the surfaces to see what all the talk is about
Every single skin rivet on the P-51 is reproduced in carbon fiber
even a seasoned homebuilder would conclude that the SW-51 is a flush-riveted aluminum structure
That observation is confirmed by looking in the cockpit and seeing the shop heads on the rivets
are molded reproductions of the original Mustang
constructed the molds in over 16,000 hours
every fairing and every rivet to exact 70% scale
Hans finished the molds and constructed the first proof of concept aircraft in 2013
After a first flight in 2014 he set about perfecting flight control continuity and confirming load capabilities
While other aircraft developers would use sand bags to test wing loading
Hans designed and built a jig with 48 computer controlled pneumatic cylinders for testing
The brilliant engineer met entrepreneur Christian Von Kessel in 2016
Christian put together a team of investors and production specialists to transform this phenomenal aircraft into something that could be replicated and sold
Von Kessel and fellow Scalewings executive Sebastian Glueck
brought a full-size mock-up of the SW-51 to Sun 'n Fun
Poland (in the famed “Aviation Valley” of Europe)
The production SW-51 will be sold “Ready to Fly” and licensed in the Experimental Exhibition category with the FAA. Scalewings’ U.S. partner, Titan aircraft, has two aircraft on order. The flying aircraft have been powered by Rotax 915-iS engines and have registered top level speeds of 150 knots
A turbo-Rotax is projected to produce a TAS cruise of 180 knots at 15,000 feet
One final bit of data will lead any pilot to simply slap their forehead and start to laugh uncontrollably
Although powered by the ubiquitous Rotax power plant
the carbon fiber cowling efficiently masks its normally high frequency buzzing rasp
The most prominent sound coming from the SW-51 on a low pass comes from the scale 4 bladed carbon fiber prop
You will simply not believe it until you hear it for yourself—see the video below
Turn up the volume and you will hear the unmistakable sound of an Allison/Rolls-Royce V-12
all of the grass around the SW-51 will be dead

Yara's son Taran competed his horse Levisto's Erbe at this show and the accident happened afterwards near the trailer
where Yara was standing with her two children
Luckily it got me and not my daughter," Yara told Eurodressage
Yara was immediately transported to the emergency room of the local hospital for a diagnosis
She underwent surgery to stabilise the fractures and was hospitalised for more than a week
She only just returned home to begin the long road of recovery from her injuries
I'm in a valley of pain and not feeling well at all," Reichert
On Springbank II at the 2023 CDI HagenThis major health set back has made her realise that you have to "be very careful when handling horses with children
We underestimate the will power horses have
but when they are in a panic it comes as a surprise how much force there is."
The 53-year old Reichert (née Wortmann) was born into a horsey family
Father Claude and mother Ragnild were avid eventing riders and she grew up around horses
The family owned a small farm where they kept and bred their horses while they ran a big shoe production company
After high school Yara studied communication
and politics at university in Munich and spent seven years abroad
She started the next chapter of her life building her professional career first as a model and then as a CEO of multiple companies
beginning in the early 2000s with online betting and gaming agencies (Alloo
She also headed a communications company (Publicia International) and a consultancy agency (TML)
Her interest in horses never disappeared and in 2008 her passion was rekindled when she received the horse Schwarze Perle (by Sandro Hit x Rohdiamant) as a present for the birth of her first son in 2008
At the 2022 CDI Hagen at Hof Kasselmann she received her Golden Rider's Badge from the German Equestrian Federation for 10 S-level victories achieved
She has also been competed Damora (by Don Juan de Hus x Don Bedo)
Ferromir (by Feedback x Laureus) and Force Majeure (by Furstenball x Sir Donnerhall) alongside the four horses she bought in 2021

A photo shows an empty plaza with closed stores in the German city of Eggenfelden on Oct
after a local lockdown was imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19
Germany and France’s new COVID-19 lockdown measures are less strict than those implemented in April and May
but will still harm their already struggling economies
Similar measures elsewhere in the eurozone will lead to a slower recovery across the currency area and open the door to social unrest
as well as long-term financial instability
Germany and France have announced nationwide lockdown measures in an attempt to slow down the rate of COVID-19 infections in their countries and prevent their hospitals from being overwhelmed
They are also trying to reduce infections during November so that the movement restrictions can be softened before Christmas
While Berlin and Paris have said the measures are time-limited
extensions are possible considering the high number of infections in both countries
The TimesA musical interpretation of Adolf Hitler’s autobiography with cheery pop numbers opened last night in Germany
The Theater an der Rott in Eggenfelden near Munich, Bavaria, is the first in the country to make a musical out of Mein Kampf (My Struggle)
which the Nazi leader wrote in prison in 1924
It served as a manifesto for the Nazi party and set out Hitler’s plans for Germany
advocating the need to seek “living space” by expanding eastwards and that their “international poisoners be exterminated”
said: “Everyone knows the title of Mein Kampf
That’s not only because it wasn’t allowed to be

The photo isn’t just a rare glimmer of sub-zero cool from the decade that taste forgot. It’s also poignant, because it represents Chapman’s peak. Lotus would never win another F1 world title. In four years, the brilliant engineer would suffer a fatal heart attack, embroiled in legal controversy surrounding the demise of the doomed DeLorean.
Chapman planned to put the craft into production and offer it as a flagship product line alongside Lotus cars. The prototype made its first successful test flight on 16 December 1982 – the very same day Chapman died. Without his inspiration, the project floundered.

It turns out the good guys in this story are the Germans. Out of nowhere, an email pinged off to the boss of Dortmund classic racing garage Britec Motorsport offered a lead. The Chancellor was being looked after at a nondescript airfield an hour east of Munich. Better yet, while everything had gone quiet, it’d been meticulously restored to its heyday livery. I had to see it.
Transport? A modern day Lotus bizjet. The new Emeya: the electric saloon-y coupe-ish liftback lozenge that takes the twin motor package and cabin from the Eletre SUV and shoves it right down the hip-high Porsche Taycan’s throat. It undercuts the Porsche on price, beats it on power, space and equipment, and looks more exotic than anything in the Tesla Model S ballpark, Audi e-tron GT aside.

We sidle up to the gates of the Eggenfelden airfield in the early evening, met by hangar owner and aircraft inspector Miche Ender. “Ugh, it’s electric?” he remarks gruffly. Car duly assessed, he turns and leads us to a sleek black bird among the ubiquitous white kites. Basking in the remnants of the day’s heatwave is G-PRIX, tyres pumped, inky paintwork shimmering. Back to her JPS best.
The cabin is a time capsule delight. Executive leather chairs, polished walnut veneer, foldout cupholders: the works.
A pilot friend warns me later that’s a romanticised perspective. “Light twin-engines are a proper Seventies bring your A-game situation. One day an engine will fail at takeoff and it’ll just roll you headfirst into the runway. But there’s something kind of brawny about them.”
I hadn’t expected to see G-PRIX move under its own power, but Miche is amused the 690bhp aircraft is more powerful than our state of the art EV. He proposes a fast taxi demo.
And that’s how I come to be cruising down the centre of the Eggenfelden runway, with the actual ex-Chapman Cessna revving up its props and chasing me down. Quite a sight in the mirror. Makes for one heck of a picture, I hope you’ll agree. But only the second best photo this aircraft ever starred in.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday reversed a planned strict Easter shutdown
amid massive criticism of the government's pandemic management
Merkel and the leaders of Germany's 16 states had agreed at marathon talks on Monday that almost all shops were to be closed on April 1-5
with only grocers allowed to open on Saturday April 3
instead appealing to the public to stay home over the Easter weekend
CDU chief Armin Laschet told a regional parliament meeting in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia
The leaders had agreed the measure was "a mistake and not enforceable in this form"
Merkel had called an unexpected crisis meeting on Wednesday morning as a backlash over the pandemic measures sent her CDU party's ratings plummeting
The leaders were expected to "talk very critically about what happened two days ago"
told the DPA news agency the meeting would focus on "implementation problems" around the measures agreed over Easter
Merkel said at a press conference that the mistake was hers.
"This mistake is mine alone," Merkel told reporters in Berlin
adding that she bore "the ultimate responsibility" for the decision
"The whole process has caused additional uncertainty
for which I ask all citizens to forgive me," she said
The toughened shutdown had prompted fierce criticism
with the Bild daily calling the government's pandemic management a "mess".
"Merkel and the (regional leaders) have lost sight of the real problem," it said
Der Spiegel called the measures a "scandal"
claiming the government had "completely the wrong priorities" and should instead focus on improving its vaccination campaign and test strategy
Infection numbers continue to rise in Germany
with 15,813 new cases reported in 24 hours on Wednesday by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) health agency
Merkel and the regional leaders agreed on Monday night to extend existing virus measures including keeping cultural
leisure and sporting facilities shut through to April 18
Case numbers are rising exponentially and intensive care beds are filling up again," Merkel said after announcing the measures
The British variant has become the dominant strain circulating in Germany
But patience is running thin in the country over a sluggish vaccine rollout
a delayed start to mass rapid testing and higher infection numbers despite months of shutdowns
with support for Merkel's Christian Democratic Union party at its lowest level for a year
Europe's top economy will elect a new government in September
as Merkel is retiring after 16 years in power.
