We at GTspirit travel routinely to known places all over the world
This time we travelled to a rather unknown Town in Germany called Einbeck
Einbeck is a small city in Lower Saxony with around 30.000 inhabitants
It is located near the west side of the Harz Mountains and pretty much in the center of Germany
The city of Einbeck is characterized by its historic district with around 150 medieval half-timber houses
Einbeck is also home of the famous Bock beer
which is a stout with more original gravity
The hotel belongs to the FREIgeist GmbH & Co with its executive partners Georg Rosentreter and Carl Graf von Hardenberg
German business men Karl-Heinz Rehkopf is the prime investor
and has recently rebuilt an old granary into an automotive museum and named it PS Speicher
After that he invested into a hotel next to the PS Speicher
The hotel’s outside appearance is quite plain and very modern
The interior appearance is different to known hotels and that’s exactly what the FREIgeist wants to be – different
we noticed the exposed concrete walls in combination with huge windows
The furniture consists of well selected pieces
where everyone can tell its own story and history
the Russian movie lamp from the 1940s at the bar or the impressive desk on the opposite of the reception – a radial engine from a plane
old motorcycles are placed on the wall over the entrance area
which goes up to the ceiling of the hotel giving you an impressive view from the 4th floor
The automotive touch is visible in too many details
a few more include the Bar menu which is called “Fahrtenbuch”
over the entrance to the restaurant is a rusty old French car and the wall drawing on the gents toilet is a picture of a manufacturing legend – Ettore Bugatti
The FREIgeist Einbeck has a total of 63 rooms
The room numbers are made by a graffiti artist
whose unique handwriting can be found everywhere in the building
supporting the hotels creative and unique design aspects
The room had a hardwood floor and a vintage wooden wall behind the bed
The ceiling shows concrete and the walls are painted in light brown
the interior design gives them some sort of loft feeling
The bathroom is covered in exposed concrete and a large walk-in shower
Most appealing part is the Russian mining lamp
The Restaurant is called “GENUSSWERKSTATT”
which could be translated into “relish garage”
which are made from a highly motivated team and served by a very friendly crew
giving every guest the attention they need to have a pleasant stay in the restaurant
You can have a look at how your food is made
that the interior design totally fits to the overall design theme
The FREIgeist Bar in the hotel serves drinks in a cozy atmosphere
closed by a garage door and order ice cold beer in a wheelbarrow
the automotive experience exhibition built into an old granary
The exhibition consists of around 350 permanent automobiles and motorcycles
where most vehicles are from one of the largest collections in the world
Particular variations to other automotive museums are definitely the ways of experiencing the exhibits
lots of interactive surroundings were made
a simulator using a 1950s car from the brand Hanomag
which lets you drive through the former inner city of Hannover
Or curved mirrors around an iconic VW Beetle
The exhibition rooms reflect the very first steps in the world of automotive movement going up to the first decades of the 20th century and even futuristic concepts
The PS Speicher also holds several special exhibitions
The latter contains very interesting cars in the history of motorsport
Another attraction is the Porsche simulator
Take a seat in a real Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Convertible and drive on the world’s finest racetracks
Your experience will be supported by the “six degrees of freedom” system
meaning a lot of realistic movement and up to 1G
Of course we did the fastest laps during our stay
The PS Speicher is definitely worth a visit
we were curious how the name will affect the hotel experience
Overall we had a very nice experience and pleasant stay
The love for details is visible everywhere and rounds up as a nice symbiosis for visitors
The hotel FREIgeist with the PS Speicher are definitely worth a visit

The somewhat unlikely combination of voice
viola da gamba and jazz trumpet in a programme moving between French Baroque
The serpent is a bass instrument of somewhat uncertain origins that acted as wind bass line in ensembles from 17th to early 19th century Related to the cornett
it is a wooden instrument covered in leather with a brass mouthpiece
The sound is described as being somewhere between a bassoon and a euphonium
but hearing one played for the first time earlier this week
my first naughty thought was how much the sound evoked my Dad playing tunes on random bits of tubing and hosepipes
The venue was the event hall at PS. Speicher
a museum containing Europe's largest collection of old cars
So the concert took place against a backdrop of classic
a town also notable for its timber framed houses (Fachwerkhäuser) dating from 16th to 20th centuries
Michel Godard's ensemble seemed somewhat oddly matched
But what all the instrumentalists had in common was a feel for improvisation
so viola da gamba player Atsushi Sakai could move between poised 17th-century divisions and playing his instrument like a jazz bass
bringing a line of clarity to the music around which the others moved
Godard ran the ensemble much like a jazz group
in each piece the original formed the basis and repeats would allow different members of the ensemble their own solo riff
the result was perhaps a programme slightly too long and occasionally the improvisatory sections felt a little unfocused
as if the players had not had time to bed in
But what really came over was the musicians' delight in making music together and combining such disparate sounds with a little bit of magic
We began with Sieur de sainte Colombe's Prelude pour viol from just viola da gamba and theorbo
haunting and with an improvisatory freedom
Thereafter the programme alternated Godard's own music
ending with Marais and Jean de la Fontaine
Godard's song A trace of grace (setting words by Linda Bsiri) gave us our first experience of Godard's serpent
brass-like sound with a certain unfocused feel
ballad-like feel with poised singing from Rux
and at one point Godard and Rux were in octaves
But the song was only the starting point for a series of free variants
Michel Lambert's Vos mepris chaque jour began as a gently haunting piece for theorbo
before a more formal dance with viola da gamba and serpent
there was a sense of Godard pushing the serpent to the limit
Rux's stylish contribution was complemented by Besson's free trumpet solo
Sulla scala delle sfere began with rather Eastern-sounding influences before freer improvisation too over with Godard producing some amazing farty low notes
The first half ended with a poised account of Peaceful rest from Handel's Hercules with Rux pure and clear in the solo
then Godard took over the melody leading to a series of free variations on Handel's original
but this time with Godard providing a counter-melody
Again a thoughtful account from Rux with Godard providing a bassoon-like counter-melody before others took up the challenge
Godard's Light the Earth provided material for an extended sequence where each instrument had its moment in the spotlight
Handel returned with Ferma l'ali from Le Resurrezione
not a well-known piece but fertile ground for the group's improvisation and reinvention
We ended with a quite straight account of Marin Marais' Prelude sur les folies de'Espagne followed by Jean de la Fontaine's Couplets Pour Mme D'Hervart Sur l'air Des Folies D'Espagne
a delightful song that moved from Rux's solo to a trumpet and serpent duet to further solo couplets from Rux with improvised counter-melodies from serpent and trumpet
The result was a somewhat unlikely but engaging evening
made all the more effective by the way all the instrumentalists moved between freedom and rigour
yet always treating the music with respect
There were perhaps one or two too many numbers with conveniently repeating ground-bass-like accompaniments but one could not but admire the imagination and the colourful timbres on offer

Beer Man is a weekly profile of beers from across the country and around the world
This week: Einbecker Brauherren Premium Pils
www.einbecker.de
Einbecker is another of the old breweries of Germany
although it has changed hands through the years
the city of Einbeck boasted around 700 master brewers and more than 700 brew pubs
A receipt exists from 1378 of the sale of two tons of beer to a nearby city
It's also said to be the birthplace of bock
Not bad for a city that even today only has a population of about 27,000
I tried Einbecker's basic pilsner beer on a recent trip to World of Beer and it ranks up there with the world's best
soft malts and that extra bitter hop bite that pilsners are known for
The malt in the aroma and flavor was biscuity with just the right amount of minimal sweetness
The hop presence was impressive for a bottled beer — European hops in a low-alcohol (4.9% ABV) bottled beer generally do not age well — but the ones in Einbecker's pilsner provided a touch of lemon in the flavor and grassiness in the aroma
The finish was slightly dry and very clean with just a hint of lingering bitterness
there was a very slight sulfuric background
but not enough to affect the flavors or the other aromas
Einbecker has quite a range — besides the pilsner, they also brew a dunkel, maibock, doppelbock, schwarzbier, lemon and several others. The beer is imported into the U.S. by B. United International
United's Beer Finder link is under construction
it does provide links to regional sales staff who can help with locating Einbecker products
A trip to World of Beer would not be complete without trying at least one oddity — this time around it was Dogfish Head's Choc Lobster (5.6% ABV)
It's a porter ale brewed with live lobsters — those with seafood allergies beware
It's not as bad as it sounds — its roast and chocolate notes were nicely done, and it reminded me of New Belgium's 1554 ale
Any lobster flavor was way in the background and not noticeable until the beer warmed a bit
It was similar to the minimal presence of oysters in an oyster stout
Cocoa is the main flavor of the dark brown beer
lightly sweet with a medium body and carbonation
It has more of a chocolate roast flavor without venturing into coffee roast
You can do a ZIP code search for Choc Lobster here
Full tag: Many beers are available only regionally. Check the brewer's website, which often contains information on product availability by mail. Contact Todd Haefer at beerman@postcrescent.com. To read previous Beer Man columns, click here

there’s an interesting history to this centuries-old brewery
The city of Einbeck apparently maintained a good relationship with the centuries-old northern German trade organization known as the Hanseatic League or the Hanse
Citizens of Einbeck had the right to brew beer
which meant more than 700 brewers in the city
City council apparently purchased the excess beer and marketed it inside and outside Germany
Einbecker began selling beer along the trading route
The brewery reports that the oldest existing receipt for the sale of its beer dates to April 1378 for 2 tons of beer sold to the city of Celle
The late 1500s saw Einbecker beer being sold in central and southern Germany
and Bavarian dukes in 1612 apparently lured away an Einbeck brewmaster to brew the beer for their Hofbrauhaus
Einbecker claims the name of the beer eventually changed thanks to the Bavarian accent to become known as bock beer
German reformer Martin Luther reportedly declared
der wird Einbecker Bier genennt” or “The best drink known to man is called Einbecker beer” after being handed a mug from Duke Enrich at the Worms Reichstag
The late Beer Hunter
defined a bock as the German term for a strong beer
it indicates a bottom-fermenting brew from barley malt,” Jackson wrote
bock usually has more than 6.25 percent alcohol by volume
Beer review: Ur-Bock offers a rich copper color with a distinct malty aroma
even just the slightest bit sweet at the back end
Ur-Bock offers a distinctly and very malty body
It is a nice smooth body with a flavor that peaks at the very back of the throat with maybe just the tiniest hint of bitterness followed by a fairly clean aftertaste
The brewer doesn’t indicate on the bottle an ABV
which is where its Ur-Bock dunkel weighs in
It wasn’t so big a beer that you’d shy away from another one
but you certainly did know that you were drinking a hearty adult beverage
I may be starting to come around on malty beers
a classic full-bodied malty bock like this is easy to like
comforting about a clean classic style done well
I wanted to pass along an e-mail from a reader about the Boston Beer Co
I mentioned in the column that Boston Beer indicated Utopias
the magnificent 27 percent ABV concoction released only every two years
It seems some enterprising friends decided to search out a bottle and divvy up the costly brew
But when readers Chet Clauser and Thad Raniszewski tracked down a bottle at Bourbon Street Wine & Spirits
Bourbon Street managed to get its hands on only three bottles
which were selling for a staggering $299 a bottle

“All the fat guys watch me and say to their wives
Besides the April showers (which will hopefully bring May flowers) early spring is also the when brewers release Bock beers
The Bock lager style originated in the early 14th century in Einbeck
slightly-stronger-than-normal beer ranging in color from gold to brown
Extended lagering (cold storage) resulted in a dry
hearty beer that aged well and survived long export journeys to neighboring countries
Beer from Einbeck earned a name for itself around the region and became highly sought-after by drinkers throughout the region
the earliest receipt for kegs of Einbeck were sold on April 28
The name "Bock" came about through a mispronunciation of the term "Ainpöckisch Bier," which brewers in Einbeck used to label their beers
the local dialect made the term sound like "Einbock," which in turn morphed into "Ein bock bier" (or "one bock beer")
"Bock" means "goat" in German - one goat please
is why Bock beer labels often feature images of goats
Bock season is a short one and typically coincides with Lent
the consumption of beer was allowed and Bock was very sustaining thanks to its higher ABV and malty richness
Here are some examples to check out before they disappear until next spring:
Einbecker Brauhaus (Germany) Ur-Bock Dunkel- Packaged in its iconic stubby-yet-long-necked green glass bottle with a copper-colored foil label
“Ur-“ means “original” and “Dunkel” translates to “dark.” There’s some confusion about where or not this is the “original” Bockbier
but the recipe dates back to 14th century Einbeck
the beer offers up loads of malty goodness
A crisp hop profile helps to dry the palate and also allows the beer to travel well
Some bottle shops and bars in Vermont special order this beer from its Vermont wholesaler
but you’re more likely to run into Einbecker Pilsner on shelves
I also managed to track down a lonely bottle of Einbecker1378 Ainpöckisch Bier in a Vermont beer shop
It was paler in color than I expected and offered notes of honey and flowers
The modern version is labeled as a “Naturtrüber Heller Ur-Bock” (“Naturally cloudy bright original bock”)
VT) Bock Bier - The most recent release from the von Trapp Brewery Specialty Series
Bock Bier is available in Vermont on draft and in 16-ounce four-pack cans
yet balanced on the palate with a dry finish
reminiscent of the spring fields that surround the brewery
NY) Bock Beer - It may not be the most traditional example
but the recipe was first introduced by Genesee Brewery in 1951
bready flavor on a slightly toned down frame
At 5.2 percent alcohol and packed in 12 ounce cans
Les Trois Mousquetaires (Quebec) Série Signature: Maibock - A sub-style of Bock
Maibock (“May bock”) is often used interchangeably with Helles Bock (“bright bock.”) These malty brews are paler in color than their standard Bock cousins
perhaps to grab the attention of drinkers who were flocking to pilsners and other pale colored beers in the mid-1800s
Maibocks were brewed specifically for May celebrations
Trois Mousquetaires Maibock is brewed with 100 percent Quebec-grown malt and German Perle and Hallertau hops
It’s straw colored and 6.8 percent alcohol with high-carbonation thanks to bottle-conditioning
Flavors of honey and marmalade fade away as the hops dry out the finish
with dark chocolate-y flavors on the palate
Celebrator is thankfully available year-round

FOND DU LAC — For the first time in five seasons
the Rock County Fury are headed to the WIAA state tournament
The Fury knocked off the Fond du Lac Warbirds 4-2 Feb
“It was pure elation,” Albany junior Alyssa Knauf said
“We’ve been trying to get out of sectionals and to state for the past three years.”
After skating through a scoreless first period
the Warbirds (7-10-5) struck first in the second when Hattie Verstegen sent a pass from Tori Schmidt beyond the reach of Rock County goalie Olivia Cronin (Beloit Memorial) at the 8:52 mark
the Fury (16-8) knotted it up as Sara Nerad (Janesville Craig) scored on a power play with assists from Anika Einbeck (Monroe) and Haley Knauf (Albany)
with only 21 seconds left in the second period
Alyssa Knauf went unassisted into the back of the net
Einbeck made it 3-1 less than three minutes into the third on another power play goal
with Haley Knauf and Sara Loerke (Beloit Memorial) assisting
with Verstegen scoring for the second time on the night just 45 seconds later
the Warbirds couldn’t sneak another shot past Cronin
The Fury scored on two of their three power play opportunities and killed both penalties of their own
Rock County out-shot Fond du Lac 35-25 in the contest
and Alyssa’s goal did as well,” Haley Knauf said of her team taking over momentum in the second two periods
Up next for Rock County is a familiar foe: Middleton Metro Lynx (21-3)
The two Badger Conference squads split the season series and finished in a 3-way tie with Cap City Cougars (19-4) for the league title
The Lynx defeated the Cougars in the Sun Prairie sectional
“Our conference was super competitive this year,” Haley Knauf said
Alyssa said them going would be “a coin toss” with Metro Lynx “having the size
and Hudson (10-12-1) are the other two teams that advanced to the state meet
The Stars defeated Hudson 2-1 in their only meeting this season
The Fury lost to the Stars twice this year — 5-2 at Monroe Dec
we had lower numbers than before and it didn’t seem like it was going to be the best year
but we kept working hard,” Haley Knauf said
in reference to the 1977 movie “Slap Shot,” the Knauf sisters and Einbeck have led the team in scoring in each of the past two seasons
including with Team Wisconsin during the offseason
“I’ve had a little time to prepare from sectionals that this next game could be my last in high school,” said Haley
who will play at Aurora University next season
She said she’s still soaking in the accomplishment of reaching state
After three years of trying to win the sectional final and make it to state
Metro Lynx Roster & StatsFox Cities Roster & Stats
Hudson Roster & Stats
Einbeck is third in the state in total points (58)
Einbeck is also second in assists (32) and tied for ninth in the state in goals (26)
Alyssa and Haley Knauf are knotted up with 48 total points each
Cronin is tied for sixth in wins by a goalie (12)
“A shout out to our coaches and our team for helping us have this great season,” Haley said
“Even the girls we played with two years ago when we went to sectionals that graduated
they were amazing and taught us so much in our first year on the team.”
The March 5 state semifinal against the Lynx will not only be the rubber match in the series
but also could be the last time the three play together on the ice
“It’s going to be business as usual (this week)
We’re going to play like it’s a must-win game
MONROE — Three local players for the Rock County Fury earned all-state hockey honors March 4
the day before competing in the WIAA girls hockey state tournament
Monroe junior Anika Einbeck and Albany senior Haley Knauf were second-team all-state picks
while Albany junior Alyssa Knauf was an honorable mention selection
Fury coach Luke Steurer was named the Section 4 Coach of the Year
The Fury went 14-8 in the regular season and were co-Badger Conference champions
Einbeck and the Knauf sisters all play on the Fury’s first line and scored a combined 70 of the Fury’s 120 goals
Einbeck scored 26 goals and had 32 assists in the regular season
while the Knauf sisters had 48 points each
All three finished in the top-10 in the state in scoring
with Einbeck third overall in total points and second in assists
The state hockey semifinal game between the Fury and the Madison Metro Lynx was unavailable at press time
The state championship is scheduled to be played at noon on March 7 at the Alliant Energy Center

Deputy minister of health and social services
Esther Muinjangue says statistics shows that many girls stay out of school when on their menstrual cycle because of poor toilet facilities
The day was observed for the seventh time in Namibia and was held under the theme ‘Together
We Can Make Menstruation a Normal Fact of Life by 2030.’
“A wash needs assessment report of 2014 by the Society for Family Health found that only 29% of schools have flush toilets
over a quarter of girls (28%) use toilet facilities that were not separated from those of the boys and over half of schools (51%) make no provision for girls in relation to menstruation i.e.
a handwashing station with soap and water and a rubbish bin inside toilets for safe disposal of pads,” she said
She said within some cultural groups in Namibia
often associated with uncleanliness and shame
women and girls are forced to be quiet during menstruation and parents do not feel comfortable sharing information with their growing children
Muinjangue noted that in Namibia women and girls who live in poverty do not always have access to sanitary products and are forced to make use of unsanitary and ineffective materials which can introduce diseases and infections
She said talking about menstruation should not make people feel uneasy or embarrassed
The deputy minister added that the menstrual health and hygiene day is held to help break the silence that covers the topic and helps to build awareness that this is a normal
“When we talk freely and positively about menstruation and when policies and facilities are in place for menstrual health and hygiene management
girls will be empowered to know that there are no limits to their daily activities and lives during the time of menstruation
The government is making efforts to address the gaps in menstrual health and hygiene as one of the strategies to achieve sustainable development goals for health
access to water and sanitation and to ensure female participation in the workforce for sustainable economic growth,” she stated
Jameela Uiras said there is still a stigma about menstruation when talking about it
“When we speak about menstruation it often seems like you are talking about something that must not be spoken of
It is not something to be ashamed and embarrassed about
menstruation must not be a source of shame
we must support each other openly,” she said
Uiras urged young girls and women to take care of their bodies and always be clean
junior councillor member and reigning Miss RHS urged girls to not feel that menstruation is some sort of burden or punishment
She said it actually shows that females are wonderfully made by God
“Girls you are so strong because you go through it all
During menstruation you may face a lot of emotions
you must know that you stand out and are strong – not only because of your uniqueness
but because of the strength that you carry during your menstruation period
God has an art of making females,” Einbeck said
Einbeck urged boys to never make a mockery when they see a girl during her menstruation
“I know sometimes at school accidents can happen when a girl might stain her dress
I urge others to not make fun of her situation
Lets be a strong and brave youth that look out for each other
In such times be that boy who covers her up and say lets go to the life skills teacher
let’s stand up and support our sisters,” Einbeck said

When we think of seasonal “spring” beers in America, the field is decidedly mixed. Some breweries put out extant winter releases, like a Russian imperial stout or a double IPA
while others release a beer on the summery side of the palate
the German Maibock is the kind of beer that spans the gap between the warmth of spring and the cold of winter
The true history of the Maibock is fuzzy, but there are some indications that once pale malts came to the fore in the last 200 years, German brewers began using them in their beer as a replacement for the generally dark grains commonly used. As All About Beer magazine notes
“it is generally accepted that the paling of bock coincided with the general trend of chic pale lager production in the mid-to late-19th century.”
However, Munich’s Hofbräu, the supposed originators of the style, contest this claim
explaining that in 1614 the “royal household” was dissatisfied with the offerings Hofbräu presented and wanted something similar to the beer from Einbeck
Hofbräu brewed a beer in the Einbeck tradition
which they called a “Maibock.” According to Hofbräu
“the first barrel of Maibock is tapped at the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April
While never making a ton of headway in the American lager market
breweries are turning to this traditional spring beer as another offering in their seasonal canon
Here are a couple of American examples to try
Rouge Dead Guy Ale: While not a traditional bock beer (or even a lager)
Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale was likely one of the first introductions many Americans had to anything resembling a Maibock
and has a nice hop bite without being overpowering
Try it if you’re looking for one of America’s standard bearers on the craft beer scene
Tröegs Cultivator: Tröegs Cultivator (which they call a Helles bock)
is as close to a German Maibock as you can get
Made with Bohemian Pilsner malt and two German hops
Cultivator is as traditional as it comes in brewing a bock beer
the higher alcohol is subdued; instead the graininess and light hoppiness take the starring role in this beer
Jack’s Abby Maibock Hurts Like Helles: If you find yourself in the Boston area in March or April
check out Jack’s Abby Brewing’s Maibock “Hurts Like Helles” (despite its punny name)
Just like Boston springs (which aren’t known for their warmth)
this beer clocks in on the low end of the ABV spectrum at 6.5% ABV
It also has the standard Maibock characteristics of a deep golden maltiness and light hop profile
So as spring arrives and you put away your 12% ABV Russian imperial stout
and opt instead for something lighter that tastes of spring
consider reaching for a Maibock the next time you’re at your local liquor store
There’s years of tradition in the beer you’re drinking
and you won’t have to drink IPA until midsummer

This is a weather word you might have heard before
but what you might not know is that it’s a bit of a myth
Many of us have seen flashes of lightning in the distance during a summer evening without any rain or claps of thunder
This is how the term “heat lightning” came about since there is no apparent evidence a thunderstorm is nearby
What you are really seeing is lightning from distant thunderstorms
But they can be much closer since in most cases you won’t hear thunder from a storm that’s just 10 to 15 miles away
higher terrain and trees can prevent you from seeing the actual lightning bolt; However
which is why you can see that flash in the sky after dark

non-alcoholic beer is experiencing an unprecedented boom on the craft side of the market
The target audience has expanded beyond people in recovery
it might also be for pregnant mothers who miss the refreshing taste of a cold beer
It could also be for athletes who are training in endurance sports but have caught on to the idea of NA beer for its anti-inflammatory benefits and as a source of electrolyte replenishment
And it just might also be for someone who’s craving a stout with their dinner but has to drive themselves home
the world of no/low ABV beer has changed drastically
But besides market trends, how do we know craft NA beer is here to stay? 2019 marked the first year non-alcoholic beers were represented as a style at the Great American Beer Festival (the largest beer competition in the world) since 2004. Back then, the five entrants yielded medals for Coors, O’Doul’s, and Old Milwaukee
with many coming from exclusively non-alcoholic breweries—and their numbers are growing
Whether you’re participating in Dry January or just want to try something new
we’ve come up with some of our favorites from this nascent boozeless beer boom so you can taste them yourself and see what all the fuss is about
New YorkWhatever your reason for cutting back on or cutting out booze may be
it can be especially difficult if you’re one of the many who find comfort in the dim light of a solid dive bar
Alban du Pury noticed this when he made the decision to see what life could be like without alcohol and quickly learned that if his favorite watering holes or local restaurants stocked any non-alcoholic beer options at all
they were never anything that could replace the taste of a decently made brew
Instead of retreating altogether from the bars and social gatherings he loved
he took matters into his own hands by developing AL’s
an incredibly easy-drinking lager that was formulated to fill what he saw as a hole in the market
crisp lager works as a perfect stand-in for your favorite full-strength dive bar staples
Stratford, ConnecticutIf you’ve been paying attention to the non-alcoholic beer boom, there’s a good chance that it’s thanks to one of Athletic Brewing’s beers
the brewery has been using a secret patent-pending method to produce some of the most noteworthy alcohol-free beers the world has ever seen
Athletic will outscale some of the most well-known regional breweries around the country
the Run Wild IPA has quickly developed a devoted following of fitness enthusiasts who are in search of something bright
and malt-balanced to take down as they train for their marathons and Ironman races
The fact that it clocks in at just 70 calories doesn’t hurt
CaliforniaGetting in on a movement early on is one thing
But what about when you’re the ones who can lay claim to being the very first into the market
happens to be North America’s first brewery dedicated solely to the production of non-alcoholic craft beer
Since well before the idea of NA beer’s ascent was seen as inevitable
secretive process that turns traditional production methods on their head
One such result of this method is the prized oatmeal stout
which picked up the silver medal at this year’s GABF (just ahead of their bronze medal-winning bourbon barrel-aged stout
and just a subtle hint of smoke over a smooth medium body
it’s just the kind of comforting sipper you’ll want to sip on after a winter jog
New YorkAs one of the great originators of the craft beer movement in the United States
Brooklyn Brewery rarely passes up the opportunity to use its impressive brewing prowess to expand its already extensive offerings
does just that by using a specially developed fermentation method that limits the amount of alcohol created while still allowing more traditional beer flavors to develop
zesty aromas thanks to the dry-hopping that takes place
with a clean citrusy palate that balances subtly sweet malts
Even though the beer has only seen limited distribution throughout Europe and out of their main taproom in Brooklyn
the beer is now available nationwide all year round
GermanyWhile most of the breweries listed here have been in business for a few months to a couple of years at most
Einbecker can claim to have sold their first barrel of product in 1378
it was over half a millennia before their now world-famous Alkoholfrei would first start rolling out of the brewery
but the late start is no indication of how good this non-alcoholic import actually is
As one of the original options for those looking for a delicious booze-free beer on the shelf
this saving grace from abroad has a bright
light flavor profile that’s balanced with a minty German hop bitter finish
Nothing about this classic feels outdated: In fact
the recent switch from bottles to cans makes it an even fresher tasting one if anything
OntarioAfter being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease
Ted Fleming was left with a choice: Stop drinking beer
he founded Partake Brewing in 2017 with the aim to provide quality non-alcoholic beverages for people who love the taste of craft beer and were unsatisfied with the state of the market
his lineup has made its way across Canada and the United States
making it relatively easy to get your hands on any of his takes on traditional styles
The pale ale is a standout choice in their group of offerings
with bright aromatics and soft fruity notes
WisconsinThe explosion of the non-alcoholic beer sector has not only made it easier to find solid options on shelves but it’s also expanded what styles of beers are available to drink
Fans of sour beers who are in search of a booze-free brew are now in luck
thanks to options like this gose from Wisconsin’s Untitled Art
it’s a perfectly balanced and refreshingly tart beer that offers the fruity brightness rarely seen in in the category
Consider this a go-to when you’re looking for anything to stock your cooler with for your next beach or pool gathering
GeorgiaWhile pregnant with her daughter in 2017
Rightside Brewing founder Emree Woods suddenly came to the common realization that many beer-loving expectant mothers share when they first wade into the world of NA offerings
Motivated by the stigma she felt was placed on the category
which rank among some of the most beloved on the booze-free beer market
She also learned that making non-alcoholic beer the right way involved investing in a process that wouldn’t use the traditional heat extraction methods used to remove alcohol from the finished product
Rightside’s offerings retain every bit of flavor—which is especially important for a beer like their Citrus Wheat
loaded with typical yeast-driven aromas like clove and banana and delivering plenty of bright citrus flavors on the palate
It’s the kind of refreshing beverage you could use to toast the end of a long run or bike ride
JapanIf we’ve learned anything over the past decade
it’s that there’s plenty of freedom in the beer world to experiment and try new things with recipes
Japanese beverage giant Suntory went so far as to tweak the formulation more than 400 times before finally settling down on All-Free
Not only is the beer completely alcohol-free
but it has absolutely no sugar and zero calories
the product is an incredibly light sipper that drinks more like barley and hop-flavored seltzer
While this may not taste like the blind taste test for full-strength beer like some other non-alcoholic brews
the unique offering still stands out as a refreshing option with light
rosy floral notes and brilliant effervescence
CaliforniaOperated by a husband and wife team
Surreal Brewing was born on the heels of a diagnosis and successful treatment of breast cancer
When the only non-alcoholic beers available to celebrate with were deemed subpar at best
founders Tammer Zein-El-Abedein and Donna Hockey decided to develop their own homebrewing recipes in an attempt to solve their problem
The resulting beers have helped turn their operation into a multiple-award-winning outfit not even two years out of the gate
with offerings like Juicy Mavs offering a rare alcohol-free take on the oh-so-popular hazy IPA
The bright tropical and citrus aromas here carry over to the palate
with mango and passionfruit coming through before a soft hoppy finish that lingers long between sips
DenmarkWhile there may be plenty of NA-focused breweries contributing to the latest surge in booze-free beers
there are also plenty of veteran players from the craft beer world who have taken an interest in the market
who became an early imported darling thanks to their edgy and esoteric takes on traditional styles
appears to have put their savvy into developing their non-alcoholic effort
Modeled after a modern American-style pale ale
and vibrant tropical fruit notes from start to finish with a medium body that never becomes too watery
Anyone fan of the hazies will be excited to have this option in their fridge to help them through Dry January and beyond
which is one of the first of its kind in the craft industry
While these will only be available in California
it’s already helped establish the brewery as a household name in the cannabis industry as well
Maryland Heights, MissouriOne of the biggest audiences for non-alcoholic beer comes from the running and endurance sports community. Enter WellBeing Brewing, whose Victory Wheat not only sees this potential but also helps bring it to the next level by fortifying it with Buoy (a formula of electrolyte supplements developed to meet the hydration standards of the World Health Organization)
packaging it in a thirst-quenching 16-ounce can
and laying claim to this being “the world’s healthiest beer.” The bright citrus flavors here do help create a refreshing flavor profile on the palate
finishing dry and long—just like the kind of beverage we’d reach for after a sweat session

“HE was a very good child,” Yvonne Bezuidenhout said before she broke down in tears
These are the only words she could utter about her son
who was found dead in his shack on 21 April due to a suspected Mandrax overdose
Bezuidenhout spoke to sitting on her bed at her 7de Laan home in Windhoek
said Einbeck was a jovial person who occasionally pulled pranks on his mother
Einbeck worked for a motor spares business in Eveline Street
He rented a shack in 7de Laan not far from his parents’ place
His stepfather said on the Sunday before he died
Einbeck came to their house after work and had dinner with the family
because he did not come home unless he wanted something
In the evening his mother told me to call him for dinner
but he didn’t answer his phone,” he said
called over to Heinrich to check up on him
“She asked me to go to Brown’s room because he was just lying on the bed
I lifted the curtain and felt his body and realised he was dead,” Heinrich recalls
He called for an ambulance and phoned Einbeck again
“I texted him [Einbeck] saying his cousin has died
It was later discovered Brown had died from a suspected Mandrax overdose
Ivanni came back running back saying Lorenzo had died
but the boss said Einbeck didn’t go to work on the Monday,” said Heinrich
He admitted they knew Lorenzo had used dagga
Heinrich said the police told the family Lorenzo had died from Mandrax produced in Namibia
I am not sure what they cook with it,” Heinrich said
Ivanni said he was shocked to find his brother dead
“I couldn’t believe he was in that condition
because two months ago he said he would not smoke it again,” he said
Ivanni said Einbeck was a good brother who always tried to help them
Amakali said he was having a hard time coping with his friend’s death
Amakali said he did not notice any strange behaviour from Lorenzo
but two people contacted him to sell him drugs
I heard the first thing he smoked didn’t satisfy him
and he then went back to get more,” he said
Amakali said his friend first used a white pill called “kos” with a lion’s face on it
He said the pill is normally used by people who are traumatised to help them sleep
