Nicholas Eltman was a self-professed "homebody," reading books
playing video games and avoiding physical activity
while in high school he decided to pursue an ROTC scholarship for college which motivated him to get off the couch and start running
"I eventually found exercise to be an extremely cathartic experience, just the process of doing it," admitted Eltman, a Health Sciences major who is also pursuing a minor in exercise science and a certificate in Medical Humanities
I was much more confident and healthier."
It's not an overstatement to say that exercise changed his life
It set Eltman on a course that led him to Drexel University for a term in 2014 and four years as U.S
Army Rangers as a critical care paramedic before returning to Drexel's College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP) in 2019
His ultimate goal is to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO)
practicing the specialty known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) or physiatry
"I knew that the Army Rangers specifically offered a higher scope of practice than a traditional army medic," he observed
He had one of the best medical experiences
where I practiced clinical and trauma medicine
and I worked very closely with a team that included a physician assistant (PA)
and athletic trainers." This experience was foundational in several ways
He narrowed his practice focus to physical medicine and rehabilitation
which combines elements of both physical therapy and clinical medicine
Encouraged by the military benefits, Eltman returned to Drexel in 2019. The university has committed over $20 million since 2009 to provide education to eligible military veterans as part of its participation in the new GI Bill's® Yellow Ribbon Program
"That financial independence really gave me not only the confidence I needed to resume a full-time education but also allowed me to dedicate all of my resources to school."
Eltman has become a leader and advocate for veterans at Drexel. He got involved with Drexel's Military Transition Program offered through the Goodwin College of Professional Studies
The program “helps veterans transition from military to civilian life by enrolling them as full-time students," Eltman explained
"This program is an amazing opportunity Drexel gave me; I really wanted to help other vets that way."
The student-run Drexel Veterans Association
of which Eltman currently serves as its president
supports and enhances student veterans' educational experiences and the unique challenges they may face as they transition to college life
we host veteran-oriented social events to help them feel welcome and included in the community," remarked Eltman
until restrictions are fully lifted on campus
he said that the association is "giving away a lot of swag
stuff like that to keep the interest going."
PM&R "is one of the newer subspecialty areas of medicine that manages a diversity of conditions involving the nervous and musculoskeletal systems
perhaps with a subspecialty in sports medicine
Eltman has forged a unique path encompassing all his interests and experience

Bedford Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Bedford County say a Saxton man is facing dozens of counts of sex-related charges after being accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a teenage girl for over a year.
Troopers say John Eltman II, 54, faces charges of rape, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, incest and child endangerment, according to online court documents.
Authorities say the investigation into the alleged abuse began in August of last year, when the victim, who was 15-years-old, reported that Eltman had repeatedly sexually abused her since 2020, when she was 13-years-old.
According to the affidavit, the victim told police that several of the assaults occurred inside a trailer, and that on one occasion, Eltman allegedly gave her $100 and told her not to tell anyone.
Authorities say they attempted to question Eltman last September about the accusations, but he never appeared for the interview.
Upon further investigation, police learned that the alleged assaults occurred at two different residences within Bedford County, one in Liberty Township and the other in South Woodbury Township.
Court dockets show that Eltman was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon and is being housed at the Bedford County Correctional Facility, on $100,000 bail.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 22.

Most of the reductions will take place at a dozen facilities in Germany and two sites elsewhere in Europe

Eltmann and Clasthal-Zellerfeld will be shut or shopped to other companies
with the cuts expected to save Schaeffler as much as 300 million euros ($355 million) a year
“Although in recent months demand has pick up across all of Schaeffler’s three divisions and four regions

The company announced plans last month to raise as much as 1.3 billion euros by issuing new shares to bolster its finances
Schaeffler had already extended a voluntary severance program to 1,900 positions in Europe
Chief Executive Officer Klaus Rosenfeld told Bloomberg last month the company was considering more cuts but would need to see how economies were recovering
Revenue fell by more than a fifth in the first six months of the year

(AP) — The "registry verification representatives" wear street clothes and travel in nondescript Toyota sedans
knocking on doors at run-down trailers and waterfront mansions to find out if registered sex offenders are actually living where they say they are
It is part of an unusual public-private partnership in Long Island's Suffolk County that uses six retired New York City police officers to hold ex-cons accountable to sex-offender registry laws
Suffolk County has paid the nonprofit group Parents for Megan's Law about $780,000 a year to run the program
resulting in 8,700 home checks and 104 people charged with violating the registry law
Detectives found some offenders on the registry were deceased or deported; others listed addresses that ended up being vacant lots or abandoned homes
which also includes counseling services for crime victims
a success and want the nonprofit's three-year contract renewed
but some are questioning whether the checks amount to harassment and whether a private entity should be performing duties that traditionally have been the purview of law enforcement
A registered sex offender claimed in a federal lawsuit filed last year that he was "the target of two harassing investigations" by Parents For Megan's Law
who was only identified in court papers as John Jones because of concerns about retribution
said retired officers came to his home "without a warrant and absent any suspicion."
A judge ruled last month that despite its status as a private organization
Parents for Megan's Law could be sued for civil rights violations in its role as a "state actor."
There are also questions about whether the effort is achieving the main goal of sex registries
which is to prevent habitual rapists and molesters from striking again
which require sex offenders to tell authorities where they are living
a 7-year-old New Jersey girl who was raped and killed in 1994 by a twice-convicted sex offender who lived near her
a forensic psychologist and longtime critic of the program
said intense scrutiny of convicts is a poor use of resources because 95 percent of sexual abuse occurs between a victim and a known acquaintance
"One of the most unethical pieces of the situation has been saying that we need to do this to prevent sexual abuse when we know statistically that this has nothing to do with preventing sexual abuse," he said
executive director of Parents for Meghan's Law
but said she is confident the program helps deter crime
"We can't allow state and federal lawmakers to say you have a great sex offender registry law
that registry needs to be up-to-date and accurate."
She also said her group is saving taxpayers money in a county where active-duty detectives can earn as much as $200,000 annually
"Do you really want that detective who is highly skilled at doing an investigation knocking on the door of a registrant
The Suffolk County Police Department maintains oversight over the program and approves all home visits in advance
They return as many as five times before contacting the police department to suggest an investigation of an offender's whereabouts
president of the National Association of Chiefs of Police/American Police Hall of Fame
said he knew of no similar program in the country
It's not clear whether Suffolk's efforts since 2013 have been more successful than in years past
The department could not immediately provide such statistics
the police department makes random compliance checks of offenders and has a 99-percent compliance rate
The program hasn't been operating long enough to draw conclusions about its impact on recidivism
two people on the registry who would have been subject to the checks have been arrested for new sex crimes since 2013
at least 2,230 arrests have been reported to the Department of Criminal Justice Services for offenders who failed to register since 2013
there were 39,313 registered offenders in the state
This story has been corrected to show the contract is for about $780,000 a year
