a new dock and yard management system Volkswagen Group moved 1.2m vehicles through the German port of Emden in 2024 with more than a third of that figure made up of pure battery electric and hybrid vehicles The total volume marked a decline of -4.6% on that handled in 2023 (see table).  Emden port exclusively handles VW Group volumes and moved 1.2m last year The group moved around 419,000 battery EVs (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles last year which accounted for just under 34% of the total number of vehicles moved That was down on the previous year when it moved 456,000 BEV and hybrid vehicles accounting for more than 35% of the total number VW Group sales of BEVs were down by -3.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year Total deliveries worldwide stood at 9.3m (-2.3%) The group took a hit from the US where BEV sales fell -30% but increased in Europe in Q4 by +18% despite a difficult market in Germany “On our way to becoming the automotive technology leader we have introduced more than 30 new models with numerous innovations – including many all-electric vehicles,” said Oliver Blume the Volkswagen Group is by far the market leader in Europe VW Group also moves finished vehicles through the Bremerhaven and Hamburg in Germany A spokesperson for VW Group said that a general shortage of operational personnel was noticeable at the ports and VW Group had to maintain close coordination with its terminal operators rail providers and freight forwarders to ensure vehicles processing was carried out according to plan Digital twin for automated drivingThat has been supported at Emden by the implementation of a new dock and yard management system and VW Group aims to increase the use of GPS in this system in the coming months Deutsche Telekom is working with VW Group Logistics the Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik (Biba) and software developer Unikie on a 5G network and Edge data centre at VW’s terminal in Emden It is aimed at supporting a new automated car initiative VW is running at the port using an external sensor infrastructure and an Edge data centre for fast data processing on site The AutoLog project has been using the public 5G network to test wireless communication in the overall system the test field (sensor infrastructure) is currently being set up on the logistics areas of the Emden plant (not currently at the port areas) and commissioning is expected in the first half of 2025 Deutsche Telekom said it is providing the logistics area in the port of Emden with 5G coverage and because the Emden plant is directly connected to the port it means that various traffic situations such as the mixed operation of manually and automatically driven vehicles According to Deutsche Telekom a digital twin of the test field is created using Lidar sensors installed in the port of Emden with sensors that can detect very small details accurately and in real time Unikie is supplying a marshalling system for the automatic control of the vehicles using a digital replica of the parking spaces The Unikie Marshalling Solution (UMS) ensures that the vehicles can be controlled precisely and safely even in densely populated or confined areas Following the announcement in December about a realignment of VW production in Europe including the move of Golf production from Germany to Mexico the pattern of volume shipments is expected to change in the coming years VW Group Logistics will evaluate the results of the group strategy and manage the import/export of volumes accordingly Read more about Emden volumes and traffic through the other leading vehicle-handling ports in Europe in our annual review which will be published in spring edition of Automotive Logistics magazine DSV finalises DB Schenker acquisition to enhance global network meet supply chain demand and diversify from container shipping Vehicle volumes at the Greek port of Piraeus were down in CY2024 but the car terminal is preparing for increased trade from China US tariffs on vehicle and parts imports are forecast to dent automotive sales by pushing prices up for consumers already facing tighter disposable income Site powered by Webvision Cloud Metrics details The Lane–Emden equation (LEE) is essential for modeling the structure of self-gravitating spherically symmetric polytropic stars in hydrostatic equilibrium Astronomy commonly employs it to depict normal stars This paper presents a new formulation of the LEE using truncated M-fractional derivatives (TMD) providing a fractional generalization that expands the conventional comprehension of polytropic gas spheres Using the accelerated power series approach we find solutions to the TMD Lane–Emden equation and create polytropic models spanning a variety of polytropic indices Our results give fundamental insights into stellar properties: whereas the initial zero of the fractional Lane–Emden function grows with decreasing fractional parameters the radius and mass of polytropic models representing stars like the Sun and white dwarfs decrease under the same circumstances This mismatch underlines the importance of fractional factors on the structural scaling of stars offering a broader insight into their physical features The fractional polytropic models presented here expand the classic theory of polytropes and provide possible applications in comprehending the complex behavior of varied astrophysical phenomena under fractional calculus frameworks we formulate the Lane–Emden equation within the context of M-fractional derivatives (LETMD) a version of fractional calculus that bridges both integer and fractional orders of differentiation The LETMD formulation enables us to examine the dynamics of polytropic gas spheres under fractional effects we apply the accelerated power series approach which offers an efficient way of deriving solutions in the presence of fractional components we investigate the TMD polytropic models for the Sun and white dwarfs studying how modifying the fractional orders α and β affects important stellar properties such as mass These findings show that the incorporation of TMD in modeling stellar structures gives fresh insights into the behavior of self-gravitating systems especially in cases where long-range interactions and memory effects are substantial truncated M-fractional derivatives in the context of the Lane–Emden equation constitute a unique and promising method in astrophysical modeling with potential applications in understanding the behavior of stars and other complicated astronomical phenomena The truncated Mittag–Leffler function (MLF) is defined as follows32: Let \(\psi :[0,\,\infty ) \to \Re\) be a function the local truncated M-fractional derivative (TMD) of \(\psi\) of order α ∈ (0 The TMD adheres to the following hypotheses: With \(\varphi ,\,\,\psi\) represents two \(\,\alpha -\) differentiable functions of a dependent variable, the above relations are proved in30 Choosing \(\beta = 1\) and \(l = 1\) on both sides of Eq. (2) which is exactly the conformable fractional derivative we write \({}_{1}D_{M}^{\alpha ,\beta }\) as \(D_{M}^{\alpha ,\beta }\) The polytropic equation of state has the form where \(n\) is the polytropic index and \(K\) is called the pressure constant The equilibrium configuration of a self-gravitating gas sphere is obtained from the hydrostatic equilibrium equations The most straightforward scenario is a spherical for a particular equation of state characterizes all macroscopic attributes The TMD form of equations of mass conservation and hydrostatic equilibrium is given by where M is the mass contained in a radius r. By applying the TMD derivative, Eq. (3), to Eqs. (18) and (20) Rearrange Eq. (22) we get By performing the first fractional derivative of Eq. (23) Combining Eqs. (18) and (24) we get by defining the dimensionless function u (Emden function) as where \(\rho\) and \(\rho_{c}\) are the density and central density respectively The fractional derivative of the Emden function u could be written as Inserting Eq. (30) in Eq. (29) we get then the Lane–Emden equation in its fractional form is given by Lane–Emden equation in its fractional form (Eq. (34)) could be written as is the Emden function and \(0{ < }\alpha \ Assume the transform \(\,X = x^{\alpha }\) then, \(A_{1} = 0\) and Eq. (37) could be written as Differentiate the Emden function \(u\) once more where \(A_{j}\) are constants to be determined At \(X = 0\) we have after j times derivatives Differentiate both sides of Eq. (40) Differentiating both sides of Eq. (44) \(k\) times we have By adding the zero value \(\,\left\{ { - (m - 1)!(m - m)A_{m} Q_{0} } \right\}\) to the second summation then the coefficients \(Q_{m}\) could be written as \(A_{0} = 1,\,\,\,A_{1} = 0,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,Q_{0} = A_{0}^{n} = 1,\,\,\,Q_{1} = \frac{n}{{A_{0} }}\,A_{1} Q_{0} = 0.\) Using \(u = 1 + \sum\limits_{m = 2}^{\infty } {A_{m} X^{m} }\) we obtain The second derivative of the Emden function \(u\) could be given by Substituting Eqs. (62) and (63) in Eq. (35) we have By putting \(m = k + 2\) in the first part and \(m = k\) in the third part of Eq. (63) we get the recurrence relation of the coefficients as The coefficients of the series expansion could be obtained from the series solution at \(\beta = 1\) is reduced to the series solution at \(\alpha = \beta = 1\) is reduced to the integer version of LEE as The mass contained in a radius \(r\) is given by Inserting Eqs. (27) and (28) for \(\rho\) and \(r^{\alpha }\) we found by substituting Eq. (34) for the Emden function \(u^{n}\) we get with \(a\) could be followed by Eq. (33) where \(x_{1}^{\alpha }\) is the first zero of the Lane–Emden function. Inserting \(a\) in Eq. (74) we get The pressure and temperature of the polytrope are given by The central density is computed from the Eq. (3) where the mean density \(\overline{\rho }\) is given in terms of the mass M and radius R of the sphere as the central density could be computed from the formula The Emden function of the TMD polytrope with n = 2.5 The red line represents the function before series acceleration while the blue line represents the function after series acceleration The physical properties of the gas sphere (i.e., density, pressure temperature, and mass) are calculated for different values of the polytropic index n after the series has been accelerated to the polytrope’s surface. The radius (r) must be established first (using Eq. (28)) representing the distance at which the density falls to zero and denotes the polytrope’s border and density distributions are calculated once the radius has been established These values are obtained using the solutions of the Lane–Emden equation at various locations inside the polytrope and integrating the density across the volume We computed models with the polytropic indexes n = 1 and n = 3; the fractional parameters take the values (α = β = 1) In Table 1 we listed the zero of the Emden function (x1) and the ratio of the central density to the mean density (\(\rho_{c} /\overline{\rho }\)) of the TMD polytropes with indexes n = 1 and n = 3 The radius at which the density of the polytrope becomes zero is represented by the value of x1 which is the first zero of the Lane–Emden function This is known and fixed for a particular polytropic index for classical polytropes ξ1 rises as the fractional orders α and β fall This indicates that the system is being stretched by the fractional calculus which enables it to attain a zero-density state at a greater radius This may be a physical scenario in which the gas sphere expands more than it would in the classical scenario due to pressure support or gravitational attraction The density of mass in the polytrope’s core relative to the rest of the system is shown by the ratio \(\rho_{c} /\overline{\rho }\) The polytropic index n determines this ratio for classical polytropes; greater values of n result in more peaked density profiles (higher \(\rho_{c} /\overline{\rho }\)) \(\rho_{c} /\overline{\rho }\) greatly rises when α and β decrease This implies that the polytrope may concentrate its mass closer to the center thanks to fractional calculus There is a significant density drop-off in the outer layers as the system gets more centrally concentrated the ratio \(\rho_{c} /\overline{\rho }\) = 4.035 for n = 1 with α = 0.9 indicates a moderate concentration The ratio increases to 78.657 for n = 3 with α = 0.9 suggesting an exceptionally dense core concerning the mean density The Emden function and its first derivative for the M-truncated fractional polytrope with n = 1. The calculation goes for different values of the fractional parameters. The Emden function and its first derivative for the M-truncated fractional polytrope with n = 3. The calculation goes for different values of the fractional parameters. The mass function for the polytropic model of the sun The left panel is for the polytrope with n = 3 while the right panel is for the polytrope with n = 3.25 The values of the masses in Tables 2 and 3 for n = 3 and n = 3.25 are approximately varying between 0.8499 and 1.084 MESA simulations of the sun provide a very accurate estimate of M = 1.00 Mʘ indicating that polytropic approximations with fractional orders are somewhat close in some places The radius values in the tables are slightly less for n = 3 (range from 0.738 (α = β = 0.8) to 1.0418 (α = 1 β = 0.95)) and substantially greater for n = 3.25 (from 0.7381 (α = β = 0.8) to 1.0378 (α = 1 This indicates that the TMD polytropic models with fractional parameters may marginally underestimate or overestimate the sun’s radius smaller fractional parameters α = 0.8 and β = 0.8 often provide a smaller radius The central density in the table rises with lowering α and β which is predicted as the fractional parameters affecting the polytropic pressure support ρc grows from 73.171 g cm−3 at α = β = 1(is much smaller than the MESA value ρc = 151 g cm−3) to 170.187 g cm−3 at α = 0.8 MESA’s comprehensive solar models estimate a core density for the sun of roughly 150 g cm−3 The polytropic models with n = 3.25 tend to generate greater values for central density This is consistent with the assumption that the star becomes more centrally concentrated as the polytropic index grows with greater core densities and larger radii β = 0.8) provides a central density ρc = 170.187 g cm−3 which is the closest value to MESA’s estimate of roughly 150 g cm−3 The similar model for n = 3.25 also provides a mass M = 0.8499 Mʘ both exceptionally far from the MESA solar estimates β = 0.95 produces ρc = 156.803 g cm−3 nearly equal to the MESA value for the sun’s core density likewise reasonably near to the solar radius electron degeneracy pressure can no longer maintain the star leading to collapse and the production of a neutron star or black hole column 4 is the mean density \((\overline{\rho})\) and column 6 is the mass of the star M*/Mwd (R* and M* are the radius and mass of the star computed from the polytropic model) In the other three cases in the table; (α = 0.95 This suggests that the relationship between central density and compactness (M/R) isn’t always direct It depends on how both α and β are adjusted When both are lowered together (like 0.95,0.95; 0.9,0.9) But when only one parameter is changed (like 0.95,1) Possible reasons could involve how α and β affect the equation of state If α and β control different aspects of the pressure-density relation changing them asymmetrically might lead to structural changes where the radius increases more than mass when only one parameter is adjusted thus lowering M/R even with higher central density maybe the mass and radius scale in a way that keeps M/R roughly stable or slightly decreasing The mass function for white dwarfs with polytropic index n = 1.5. The central density and other physical parameters of each model are listed in Table 3 we formulated the Lane–Emden equation of the polytropic gas sphere in the frame of the truncated M-fractional derivatives We solved the LETMD using a power series; then this series is accelerated using Euler-Abel-Pade transformations to reach the surface of the gas sphere We elaborated a MATHEMATICA code to construct models with the polytropic index n = 0 and n = 4; the fractional parameters (α and β) range from 0.8 to 1 the value of x1 denotes the scaled radial point at which the density first hits zero indicating the theoretical border of the polytropic sphere the TMD polytropic structure gets “stretched” in the fractional framework This expansion indicates a more expansive outer zone where density approaches 0 at a larger scaled radial distance than in the classical model Notwithstanding the rise in x1 when α and β diminish the physical radius R of the polytrope (such as the sun or a white dwarf) decreases This decrease arises from the influence of fractional factors on the radius scaling factor hence impacts the actual physical dimensions of the model The reduction in R signifies that while the theoretical limit of the density profile (represented by x1 extends outward in dimensionless terms the tangible physical structure is more condensed Fractional derivatives result in a greater mass concentration in the center diminishing the physical radius while elongating the mathematical radius in its dimensionless representation This result underscores the capacity of TMD polytropes to accommodate intricate density distributions such as those seen in compact stellar entities by including a degree of flexibility in mass distribution that traditional polytropic models lack All data that support the findings of this study are included within the article (and any supplementary files) Lane, A. Several cable harnesses were severed, and an investigation is under way into a suspected sabotage attack, according to Spiegel The Rostock prosecutor's office has confirmed that it is investigating the case.  an unknown saboteur dumped dozens of kilos of metal filings into the oil sumps of the main engines aboard the brand new corvette Emden according to multiple German media outlets The contamination was detected and cleaned out it would have quickly destroyed the engines.  Jan Christian Kaack told the press that "more than one unit" had been sabotaged he added that German naval bases have reported a pattern of attempted security perimeter breaches both from the shoreside and from the waterside He added that uniformed German Navy personnel have been approached in public while en route from base to their homes.  "The growing threat from Russia is more urgent at the beginning of 2025 than it was two years ago," Kaack told reporters without specifying whether the suspected security threats within Germany were Russian.  The suspected attacks are just part of a broader pattern of sabotage targeting Europe's security forces and its infrastructure three German-Russian dual nationals were arrested on suspicion of planning an attack on the U.S a training facility for Ukrainian servicemembers stands accused of plotting an extensive series of arson and explosive attacks within Germany with targets including rail lines and a manufacturing plant.  Some NATO security forces also suspect - but have been unable to prove - that the four back-to-back subsea cable breaks in the Baltic over the past year are an intentional act of sabotage potentially linked to Russian intelligence.  Top image: German Navy frigate Emden (F266) at Blohm+Voss, 2023 (Dkvtig / CC BY SA 4.0) Newmark  Vice Chairman Robert Emden recently sat down with citybiz to discuss key moments in throughout his career in the commercial real estate industry—spanning nearly six decades he garnered the respective of industry peers and colleagues gradually rising through the ranks to become a stakeholder Emden held senior roles at PBS and USI Real Estate Advisors where he specialized in tenant and landlord agency representation Emden joined Newmark—one of the top commercial real estate advisors and service providers in the world—as an Executive Managing Director representing the most prominent private equity landlords and developers in NYC for over a decade Evidenced by the more than $3 billion in lease obligations that he has negotiated over the course of his year Emden was promoted to Vice Chairman in 2022 Emden splits his time between Newmark’s New York HQ and satellite office in West Palm Beach where he and his wife reside part of the year Emden has established a robust book of business in the South Florida market Perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences of Emden’s tenure at Newmark, is his ability to work alongside his son David Emden an Executive Managing Director in firm’s NYC office where he supports the oversight and day-to-day operations of the team’s northeast-centric agency portfolio “This is an exciting time to be in the commercial real estate business as market fundamentals continue to shift in our favor Newmark’s growth has been nothing short of extraordinary—a remarkable journey driven by a deep investment in top-tier talent and a relentless focus on redefining industry standards Being part of a team that continually raises the bar and delivers exceptional outcomes for our clients reinvigorates the passion I bring to my work each day.” Follow Robert Emden and Newmark on LinkedIn © Copyright 2012 - The system was installed earlier this month and is located at the main gate in the Port of Emden, on the road to the Emspier. The system, which offers wind power, photovoltaics, battery storage and car charging in one solution, is being tested in the port as part of an EU-funded INTERREG project REDIIPorts. The project has been implemented in cooperation with the Swiss startup FlowGen. “When you consider everything the system offers, it is like the Swiss Army knife of wind turbines,” Thomas Tröster, Team Leader for Electrical Engineering at Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) in Emden, explained. He and his team colleague Jens Kampen have been involved in the Renewable Energy Development and Intelligent Implementation in Ports (REDIIPorts) project from the beginning. How to generate electricity in the Port of Emden in a sustainable way has long been a topic for the two of them. After focusing on micro wind turbines, they realized that there is more to it. A container wind turbine promises more power. “We want to exploit technical possibilities that are cost-effective, easy to implement and still profitable. We have more than enough wind in Emden, which is why the container wind turbines are ideal. The weekend after the system was installed, its performance exceeded our expectations,” Jens Kampen said. Two wind turbines are positioned to stand diagonally to each other on a standard container. The container is also equipped with PV systems, battery storage and car charging infrastructure. The rotor blades and the mast of the wind turbines are made of light and robust composite materials. “What is special is that we were able to implement this project with comparatively less effort and low costs,” Kampen continued. “Container wind turbines are small systems with high yields. The system is designed to generate over 45,000 kWh of electricity per year. This means we can easily operate the main gate to the port and the associated premises, as well as light the car park. We feed the rest into our grid,” Tröster further said. In order to make ports more climate-friendly, generate green electricity and save emissions, it is important to have a holistic view of renewable energy options, as per Holger Banik, Managing Director of Niedersachsen Ports and JadeWeserPort Realisierungs. “Small-format solutions are ideal for trying out ideas like this one. At NPorts, we welcome all innovative solutions that move us forward – whether small or large. The port of Emden offers favorable wind conditions and is ideally suited for this.” Daily news and in-depth stories in your inbox The Pioneers of Offshore Engineering GustoMSC, part of NOV’s Marine and Construction business, is recognized for providing advanced design & engineering consultancy for mobile offshore units and reliable equipment. Operating ET on Eq. (1) Thus, Eq. (3) is known as the recurrence relation of ET for Eq. (1) with Suppose the general solution of Eq. (1) such as with \(p\in [0,1]\) as a perturbation element Employing Eqs. (4) and (5), Eq. (3) yields the numerical results behaves in sequence as We start the general procedure of LT-HPM by considering a nonlinear differential equation with time fractional order such as here \(\vartheta\) is function of \(\eta\), \(N_{1}\) and \(N_{2}\) showing linear and nonlinear operators respectively, whereas \(g(\varsigma ,\eta )\) represents the source component. Operating LT on Eq. (7) Thus, Eq. (9) is known as the recurrence relation of ET for Eq. (7) with Putting Eqs. (10) and (11) into Eq. (9) the analytical results behaves in sequence as we examine the Banach fixed-point theorem and uniqueness for the proposed schemes Let’s examine Y as part of Banach space with a nonlinear mapping \(T_{1}: Y \rightarrow Y\) We have the fact that \(T_{1}\) is a singular point and the series generated by ET-HPM is said to be convergent for \(\vartheta _{n+1}=T_{1} \vartheta _n\) using a random \(\vartheta _0 \in X\) The subsequent stated below is required for the evaluation which may be explained by using the Banach statement Given \(\vartheta (\varsigma , \eta )\) and \(\alpha\), where H represents the Hilbert space, let us consider \(\vartheta (\varsigma , \eta )\) as the exact solution to Eq. (7) \eta )\) converges to \(\vartheta (\varsigma in which \(\left\| \vartheta _{r+n}(\varsigma Let \(\sum _{r=0}^{\infty } \vartheta _r(\varsigma We need to demonstrate that the order of \(\Big \{T_r(\varsigma \eta )\Big \}_{r=0}^{\infty }\) converges under the derived results using the Cauchy sequence \eta )\) with \(0<\varepsilon <1\) are constrained we may use \(\beta =1-\varepsilon /\left( 1-\varepsilon _{r-n}\right) \varepsilon ^{n+1}\left\| \vartheta _0(\varsigma the sequence \(\left\{ \vartheta _r(\varsigma \eta )\right\} _{r=0}^{\infty }\) forms a “Cauchy sequence” in H The sequence \(\left\{ \vartheta _r(\varsigma \eta )\right\} _{r=0}^{\infty }\) converges to \(\vartheta (\varsigma \eta )\) as r approaches infinity in \(\mathcal {H}\) Assume that \(\sum _{r=0}^n \vartheta _r(\varsigma \eta )\) is finite and that \(\vartheta (\varsigma \eta )\) represents the derived series solution \eta )\right\| \ge \left\| \vartheta _n(\varsigma where the maximum absolute error is given as Let’s assume that the series \(\sum _{r=0}^n \vartheta _r(\varsigma then we can state that the findings of a fractional problem is unique. To show the unique solution of fractional model by using ET-HPM, Let’s rewrite Eq. (20) when L and N conform to the limitations imposed by Lipschitz Since L and N satisfy Lipschitz constraints, then L is a restricted operator with the condition that \(|L(\vartheta )-L(\varpi )| \le \mu |\vartheta -\varpi |\), wherein \(\mu\) is an integer. Furthermore, N is defined by \(|N(\vartheta )-N(\varpi )| \le \varepsilon |\vartheta -\varpi |\) for all \(\varepsilon\) that are positive. So, Eq. (22) yields as Using the mean value property for Eq. (23), we deduce that M represents the highest value at \(M=\max (\eta -\tau )^n\) when \(\eta\) is within the range of \([0, \eta ]\). Therefore, Eq. (23) becomes as: Consider \((\mu +\varepsilon ) M \eta =\gamma\), then Eq. (24) yields This indicates \(\vartheta =\varpi\) if \(\gamma <1\) and \(\gamma \in (0,1)\) We illustrate two numerical applications to show the accuracy and reliability of our proposed schemes we show the significance of ET-HPM and LT-HPM for the numerical treatment of fractional problem with linear case whereas in second phase we use these strategies for the nonlinear time fractional Emden-Flower model We observe that our proposed schemes are reliable and provide significant outcomes in convergent shape We use the Mathematical software package to draw the graphical results and computational work Suppose a linear Emden-Fowler problem with time fractional order such as36 Employing ET on Eq. derived results turn to the exact solution when the parameters of fractional order are increased we successfully identified the numerical treatment of the Emden-Fowler problem with the Caputo fractional derivative using the Elzaki transform homotopy perturbation method (ET-HPM) and the Laplace transform homotopy perturbation method (LT-HPM) Two mathematical problems were thoroughly analyzed through this suggested technique The fractional order is given in the Caputo design The collected outcomes demonstrate the reliability of the proposed methods and their potential for application to nonlinear time fractional problems Our suggested approach demonstrates outstanding effectiveness in achieving highly accurate iterative outcomes The convergence rate is significantly influenced by the high accuracy and substantial appearance of both linear and nonlinear models The proposed method produces convergent sequence structures with parameters that are readily identifiable despite the necessity for linearization The mathematical and graphical results produced by the suggested method are far more attractive and useful for discovering the time fractional model solutions our objective is to broaden this approach to tackle real-world problems on a larger scale including various fractal and fractional phenomena We aim to showcase its effectiveness in deriving a variety of nonlinear challenges associated with technological and scientific advancements The use of ET-HPM and LT-HPM can be extended to other nonlinear time-fractional differential equations beyond the fallen victim to sabotage, delaying its maiden voyage. The Type 130 Braunschweig-class corvette Emden is slated for future deployment to the Baltic Sea but when it could begin operations is now anyone’s guess According to a report from the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper several dozen kilograms of metal shavings had been dumped into its engine system and efforts are underway to address the issue Workers at the Hamburg Blohm+Voss shipyard discovered the shavings in the ship’s gearbox during an inspection and may have averted more serious damage to the vessel An investigation involving the local criminal police and the Hamburg regional prosecutor’s office is now underway The German Ministry of Defense has not commented on the matter Emden is the second vessel of the Batch 2 of Type 130 corvettes currently being built for the Deutsche Marine Five of the Batch 1 warships are now in active service and Batch 2 called for an additional five corvettes to be built as part of Berlin’s efforts to increase its military posture The inspection of the ship’s systems conducted last month “revealed the presence of metal shavings in the ship’s propulsion system, which could have resulted in significant damage if it had gone undetected,” Newsweek reported it appears to be a deliberate act of sabotage possibly to delay the deployment of the corvette it will be part of NATO’s increased presence in the Baltic Sea and will aid in protecting the region’s undersea infrastructure from threats posted by both state and non-state actors Though it is unclear who may have carried out the sabotage there is already speculation that Russia—or actors working at its behest—may have been involved Moscow’s “Shadow Fleet” is already believed to have engaged in efforts to disrupt the critical infrastructure that includes communication cables and oil pipelines “The growing threat from Russia is more urgent at the beginning of 2025 than it was two years ago,” Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack of the German Navy told broadcaster NTV “Experts and intelligence agencies agree that Russia will be able to seek a conflict with NATO from 2029.” and the investigation will seek to find those involved It comes as other security-related activities have been noted As The Defense Post also reported “Germany has been on high alert to the risk of sabotage and other so-called hybrid attacks which do not use conventional military tactics,” and it added “[Berlin] suspects that Russia has launched undercover action against western countries as it pursues its invasion of Ukraine.” Officials in the NATO nation are also investigating recent drone sightings that took place over a German air base where Ukrainian personnel are now being trained The corvette – also designated a frigate by NATO standards – is the sixth German warship to be named for the city of Emden on Germany’s North Sea coast The most recent vessel to bear the name before the current corvette was a Bremen-class frigate that was operated from 1983 until 2013 the name is one with a rich history in Germany’s maritime forces going back more than a century SMS Emden was a Dresden-class light cruiser that was operated by the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy) in the early stages of the First World War That warship gained fame for sinking two Allied warships in the opening stages of the conflict while also sinking or capturing more than a dozen merchant vessels in the first weeks of the war Most of the vessel’s crew were killed or captured during an engagement with the Royal Australian Navy’s HMS Sydney while the crew conducted a raid on the British-held Cocos Island in the Indian Ocean in October 1914 In a mildly ironic twist—given that the current Emden will serve to protect undersea cables—the WWI light cruiser’s mission was to destroy the British wireless and cable transmission station The landing party that went ashore to carry out that mission managed to escape and later obtained a schooner in the neutral Dutch East Indies and traveled across the Indian Ocean before reaching the Ottoman-controlled Arabian Peninsula the survivors eventually reached the city of Jeddah and were able to travel via train to Constantinople The current Emden is sponsored by “godmother” Annette Lehnigk-Emden whose grandfather was a crewman on the light cruiser He was among those captured at Cocos Island and was granted permission to add the suffix “-Emden” to his surname Two years after the loss of the light cruiser a second SMS Emden – a Königsberg-class cruiser – was launched in 1916 and was among the Imperial German Navy vessels scuttled at Scapa Flow That was followed by yet another light cruiser named Emden which was among the Reichsmarine’s largest warships to see service in the interwar era until the Nazis came to power in 1933 the West German Bundesmarine operated the Köln-class frigate Emden from 1961 until 1963 and that was followed by the aforementioned Bremen-class frigate Image: Wikimedia It started with an idea jotted down on a napkin at a bar in the Houston Heights in 2014, but the Program in Politics, Law and Social Thought (PLST) at Rice University has evolved into the most popular minor offered in the School of Humanities Law and Social Thought is one of the crown jewels of a Rice undergraduate education,” says Dean of Humanities Kathleen Canning theory and philosophy of law and political thought taught by our most talented teachers in humanities with courses in the sociological and political dimensions of law offered by social sciences.” “She basically posed this question to me: Why don’t you have some kind of program that deals with big ideas and politics, the kind of stuff you work on, but also legal material?” said Carl Caldwell “Carl and I realized that we have the same kinds of students over and over again: students who were interested in history of political thought, students who were interested in law school and students who were intellectually driven by questions about the foundations of democracy,” said Christian Emden the Frances Moody Newman Chair and professor of German studies Emden and Caldwell’s shared vision laid the foundation for the program’s creation They initially envisioned PLST as a niche program for about 15 students who were passionate about engaging in deep discussions on political theory and law “We utterly failed,” Caldwell said with a laugh the program’s appeal lies in its interdisciplinary nature it attracts students from every school at Rice bringing them together across disciplines to engage with the most pressing political and legal questions of the day “Who does specifically social and political thought?” Caldwell said PLST is not just for students with an eye on law school though its offerings have proven valuable for those on that path “We’re finding that the students with whom we work closely who are in the speculative classes about thought they’re getting into really top law schools,” Caldwell said listing institutions like Harvard University Stanford University and New York University among the schools where PLST alumni have been admitted One of the program’s standout features is its unique judicial practicum opportunities which allow students to shadow appellate judges in federal or state courts It was spearheaded by Judge Rosenthal in the federal court and former Houston First Court of Appeals Justice Evelyn Keyes who implemented the program among her colleagues in the state court “I don’t know of any other program in the country that allows 15 or so of our undergraduates to shadow these top judges,” said Caldwell who added that a parallel legal practicum offers internships with nongovernmental organizations and law offices The practicums are what first got the attention of senior history major McKenzie Jameson I have really fallen in love with the program because of its emphasis on the study of both ideas and their applications,” Jameson said Caldwell’s course on authoritarian constitutions we spent the first six weeks of the semester focused solely on concepts such as populism examining what these concepts mean and how they function on an abstract level We then dedicated the second half of the semester to researching and investigating how these concepts play out in practice in diverse regions around the world.” “The program is not about finding policy solutions,” Emden said “We’re asking the truly foundational questions.” exemplifies this approach by engaging students with canonical texts that continue to resonate with today’s political landscape “They begin to realize that an author writing in the 17th century actually speaks to foundational political issues that we’re still facing today,” Emden said is often eye-opening for students who discover that these historical texts offer new perspectives on modern debates about government “I came to Rice as a student who was primarily passionate about studying American political and legal history but the courses offered through PLST really encouraged me to expand my focus ultimately stimulating a new interest in comparative law,” Jameson said “Perhaps in contrast to prelaw programs at other universities the PLST program really sits at the intersection of a variety of disciplines which I believe leads students to develop the capacity to view problems and ideas through a more nuanced lens.” That intellectual flexibility curated by a PLST minor has proven to be one of its most valuable assets in the professional world Rather than preparing students for a singular career path allowing graduates to adapt to various roles across industries critical reasoning and deep analysis also positions its students as highly desirable candidates in today’s dynamic job market “Students aren’t trained in this program; it’s more of an education,” Emden said noting that the skills gained in the humanities and social sciences are precisely what make PLST graduates stand out “Large corporations are looking for those kinds of people to hire for their senior positions.” a Rice senior majoring in political science and minoring in PLST the program has provided insights into her future career path said that the courses offered by PLST have deepened her understanding of law and politics in a way that few other programs could “I saw that Rice offered the Intro to Law class with Professor Rudy Ramirez before I even applied to Rice and that really got me interested,” Peden said “It’s supposed to mimic your first year of law school so you can see if that’s something that you’re actually interested in and something that you are capable of doing Jameson highlighted associate history professor Aysha Pollnitz’s courses such as Political Thought from Cicero to Locke “Within the small-group setting of the class Pollnitz allowed each day’s discussion to be shaped by the questions we brought to class after having read the primary sources for the week,” Jameson said her course provided me with an opportunity to take an active role in my own learning and to engage directly with the interests and perspectives of my peers.” Caldwell and Emden are faced with questions about its future With an ever-increasing number of students and expanding prelaw interest Caldwell said PLST has reached a crossroads “We have too many students to continue simply being a minor with a smattering of courses here and there,” he said One possible next step is transforming the program into an enhanced minor and maybe eventually a major which would allow for a more structured curriculum and expanded legal studies “We should never become merely a prelaw program,” Caldwell said “but we could dramatically expand it into some kind of major that balances humanistic inquiry with legal education.” including the possibility of establishing a center for democracy and ethics at Rice would position the university as a leader in addressing the foundational questions about democracy justice and political thought with which PLST grapples “We’re not a local university; we’re a global university,” Emden said “Adding a center would provide Rice with another dimension of reaching out beyond the hedges and showing how extremely relevant our work really is.” 713-348-0000 | Privacy Policy | Campus Carry EWE Major Hydrogen Project In Emden: Project Management By Drees & Sommer the northern German energy supplier EWE plans to build one of the largest hydrogen production plants in Europe by 2027 EWE has commissioned the Stuttgart-based consulting firm Drees & Sommer SE I am pleased that Drees & Sommer is on board for the project We are relying on a reliable service provider who has many years of experience in managing large-scale projects Head of Hydrogen and SynFuels at Drees & Sommer there are many interfaces that have to be properly organized during implementation organizational and time-related terms.” Project management is therefore particularly important in order to implement the project within the cost This is a particular strength of Drees & Sommer because the company brings project management experience from the successful implementation of numerous complex large-scale projects coupled with technical expertise in the field of hydrogen production The planned 320-megawatt electrolysis plant in Emden is expected to produce up to 26,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for various industrial applications in the region The green hydrogen in Emden is mainly generated using wind energy In addition to the construction of system-serving generation plants in Emden and Bremen EWE plans to convert a natural gas cavern in Huntorf for the storage of hydrogen build and convert several pipeline sections and use green hydrogen across sectors on an industrial scale READ the latest news shaping the hydrogen market at Hydrogen Central EWE Major Hydrogen Project In Emden: Project Management By Drees & Sommer. source Hydrogen on show at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps A pillar of endurance racing and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s efforts to decarbonise motorsport hydrogen will be highlighted during the forthcoming..
