in the latest of a string of violent plots believed to have been hatched by students in internet chat rooms
Students and staff at the secondary school in Kaarst
were sent home following a tip-off from police in Finland where investigations are still under way following the shooting dead of eight people at a school in Tuusula by an 18-year-old this month
According to German police sources, Finnish authorities found evidence on a closed internet chatroom conversation between several parties which pointed to plans for an attack in Germany. They said they could not rule out a link between the Finland shooting and the plot in Germany, both apparently inspired by the 1999 Columbine shooting in Colorado
along with threats received at a vocational school in Göttingen
was believed to have been linked to the first anniversary yesterday of an attack on a school in Emsdetten
in which an 18-year-old injured 32 in a Columbine-inspired shooting spree before killing himself
police in Cologne apparently foiled another plot by two students to launch a massacre in their school using crossbows
which was also planned to coincide with the Emsdetten anniversary
The police have come under criticism for sending the two students home after questioning
The younger boy later committed suicide by throwing himself under a tram
German police and education authorities have pointed to a worrying growth in copycat incidents as well as a sharp rise in the number of pupils sharing information on the internet
and goading and inspiring each other into carrying out attacks
The Finnish killer Pekka-Eric Auvinen was believed to have been in touch via the internet with a Pennsylvania teenager who had been planning a Columbine-style attack
This week a British woman alerted police in Norway to a massacre threat against a school in Askoey near Bergen after seeing a suspicious video of on YouTube
The Columbine massacre in Littleton, Colorado, in which two students killed 13 people before killing themselves, has served as a catalyst for a series of attacks across the United States and abroad, particularly in Germany.
"The phenomenon of massacres by young people in schools in Germany has only existed since Columbine," said Frank Robertz, a Berlin criminologist and author of a book on violence in schools.
The 18-year-old in the incident at Cologne's Georg Büchner school, who is now undergoing psychiatric treatment, had posted pictures of the Columbine massacre on his personal page on the school's internet site Schuelervz.net.
Rolf B chose five photographs from the 1999 massacre and had told several fellow pupils: "On Tuesday there'll be a mighty explosion." A search of his home revealed a "death list" of 17 teachers and pupils whom he apparently planned to kill, before - he told police - he changed his mind. Both pupils had shared details of the plans in internet chatrooms.
Germany's worst school massacre occurred in April 2002 when 19-year-old Robert Steinhäuser shot 12 teachers, a secretary, two pupils and a policeman at his school, the Gutenberg Gymnasium in Erfurt, before killing himself.
The Erfurt massacre led to the introduction in some states of emergency plans to deal with shooting incidents.
In many schools, pupils and teachers now routinely practise drills in which they are told a specific message over the public announcement system such as: "The canteen is closed." On hearing the message, they are supposed to go to their classrooms, draw the curtains and lock doors.
Plans are also under way to set up an internet platform on which the public can give information about possible attacks.
Klaus Jansen, head of the Association of Detectives, said that because of the frequency of incidents pupils were becoming more astute at recognising warning signs.
"The sensitivities seem to be growing," he told a German newspaper. "Pupils seem to increasingly understand how important it is to let security authorities in on the picture."

19-year-old Robert Steinhäuser went on a shooting rampage
a secretary and a policeman before turning the weapon on himself
The event sent shock waves through the country and sparked widespread soul-searching on topics from teenage alienation and violent video games through mass media and gun control
another school shooting took place in Emsdetten in northern Germany
leaving 37 injured and the 18 year old gunman dead.Jens Hoffmann is a psychologist whose project at the Technical University of Darmstadt – ironically
the German sister school of Virginia Tech University
which saw its own horrific killing spree on April 16 -- developed an early detection method to identify those at risk for mass violence
He teaches the method to law enforcement agencies
what does your project and method do?Jens Hoffmann: After the school shooting in Erfurt in 2002
we began to wonder if anything could be done about it
We found that in the United States there was already quite a lot of research on early warning signals about these attackers
So we analyzed German cases and we found just about the same signals
we developed instruments to analyze the communication of people who are estranged
and the best way to intervene. Now we mostly offer two-day workshops for school psychologists
and people working in schools and companies
We teach them how to make risk assessments in their own organizations.Briefly
what do you tell people to look out for?First
something must have gone wrong for the attacker
They are always very depressive and very angry
Then they start to think about a violent solution for their problem
They do something we call "leaking," giving direct or indirect signals
like the plays the (Virginia Tech) attacker wrote before he attacked
People were aware that he wrote very violent things
"When can I do it?" They talk more in detail about it
they come out with a statement that something big is going to happen
"don't go to the high school on this day." So we have quite a lot of signals
the more sure we can be that this person may see a violent attack as an answer to his problem. What should people do if they recognize a crisis
People preparing for an attack like this might start giving away their possessions to friends; they engage in what we call "final act behavior." The school shooter last year in Emsdetten gave away his favorite gun to a friend
Another late warning signal that shows a very high risk is that they might talk to friends or peers about attacks by other school shooters. So it is important that if you are worried about someone
you have to ask the people around them if they have seen any of these signs
and say they don't know how to go on.It often seems clear in retrospect that someone was on the brink
In the United States there are very good programs
We need more ‘threat managers' in schools and organizations who can recognize the risk signals
They can say "there may be someone in crisis here." And if we understand that these people are in a crisis -- that's why they do these attacks
because they are in crisis -- the earlier on they get help
The first thing a threat manager should do is talk to the person that people are worried about
And in most of the cases there is nothing behind it and everything is ok.So you teach prevention?Yes
its very much about behavior-based prevention
Not in the classical psychological way of looking at what are the people saying
Its much more hands on: What do we need to look at in an organization
what do people say or do that we should perhaps be worried about
Very often people who are desperate are more dangerous than people who are saying
‘I'm going to kill someone.'It is a new way of dealing with the field of threat assessment and threat management
We've learned a lot from our colleagues in the United States on this.Trying to raise flags about killing sprees is quite a gruesome topic
How has your work been received in Germany
We had to fund the programs with our own money
But then there was Emsdetten and that lead to huge interest
Nobody thinks this is actually going to happen where they live
nobody believed our message: that there are always warning signals
What would it take to make these detection methods widespread
People just need to be taught about the risk models
You need to train people to know what to look for – just one
who could turn around and train the other people. The most important thing is that such a program be supported from the top
the people have to have some time to make the effort
because of the events at its partner school Virginia Tech
the TU Darmstadt is putting this kind of training program into place. How big a role does the media play in causing events like Erfurt? The terrible thing is
due to the fact of the media and the Internet
mostly young men -- only 4 percent have been women -- to "be someone." They feel lost
they feel people have behaved unfairly to them
and they need some form of revenge to show that they are someone
Almost every school shooter saw Columbine as some sort of blueprint
and they identified with the Columbine killers
And the newest terrible thing is to leave some sort of final message
and they can fantasize before they are dead that afterward
everyone will see them. The US made a horrible mistake when it published the videos of the Virginia school shooter
Now there is a higher likelihood of a copycat crime. We tend to think of Erfurt-type school shootings as a modern phenomenon
Yet I've seen references to killing sprees going back to the 1920s
the earlier cases were people from outside who attacked the schools
there were almost no school-shooter cases like those we know today
you begin to have a terrible new dimension of this sort of crime
We know from earlier psychological research that there is something called the "Werther Effect," named after the Goethe book (The Sorrows of Young Werther
about a romantic character who shot himself in the head
published in 1774 – eds.) Even back then there were a series of copycat suicides
or they were found dead with the book next to them
it probably dates back to the first printed books. But what is new is that in every room
And the newest dimension is that you can make your final statement to the world
Its amazing: The school shooter in Emsdetten gave a speech in English
because he said "I want to know that the whole world hears my story."So yes
we have a new dimension because of mass media
and because of a long tradition that began 200 years earlier
But there is a new quality to it.Why do you think schools are so often the focal point of these shootings
Why not other public places -- restaurants or theaters?Schools
These are organizations that have a big influence on other people
If you have a problem in school or in court
or your workplace… it has a huge influence on your life
What you find especially with people who are very desperate
who don't know how to cope with things and feel angry
In fact a big aspect of prevention may be to focus on making sure people are dealt with fairly
What we found in many of the incidents is that the shooters were
(the shooter Robert) Steinhäuser had to leave school in the 12th grade
And he was kicked out for quite a minor infraction
the shooter was treated unfairly by his peers
Making procedures to deal with these could be a big step toward toward prevention
announced the following in a press release this afternoon:
the L&O Group (Lüke & Ortmeier Group)
took over a majority shareholding of the German Sport Guns GmbH (GSG)
Leading gun manufacturers Blaser Jagdwaffen
and SIG SAUER are amongst the L&O Group shareholders
an international industrial holding company
and Michael Swoboda will continue to be responsible for GSG business operations as managing shareholders
The L&O Group and GSG already have a long-term partnership; GSG in particular has been an important strategic supplier to SIG SAUER in the USA for many years
GSG has developed excellently under the leadership of Mssrs
Profits and turnover have continuously increased by large margins and the product range has continued to expand
The L&O Group has secured supply in the mass manufacturing of the .22 calibre firearm from the majority takeover which has now occurred
The objective is to continue to jointly develop the GSG business
Considerable growth potential will be seen especially in the use of the L&O Group brand portfolios
in particular with the brands "SIG SAUER," "Blaser," "Mauser," and J.P
Sauer & Sohn." An acceleration of business trade is also intended
The GSG will continue to focus on sales in the US market
although considerable growth potential will also be seen in other regions worldwide
A very interesting and surprising development
GSG first recorded IWA growth trends by taking over distribution of outdoor products by Highlander and tactical equipment by Pro-Force

Psychologists, epileptologists and neurologists from the University of Bonn studied the effect of shoot ’em up game images and other emotionally charged photos on the brain activity of heavy gamers.
“Compared to people who abstain from first-person shooters, they show clear differences in how emotions are controlled,” reported lead author Dr. Christian Montag from the Institute of Psychology at the University of Bonn.
Excessive first-person shooting of about 15 hours a week
When the subjects regarded the real, negative pictures, there was greatly increased activity in their amygdalas. This region of the brain is strongly involved in processing negative emotions.
“Surprisingly, the amygdalas in the subjects as well as in the control group were similarly stimulated,” reported Montag. “This shows that both groups responded to the photos with similarly strong emotions.”
But the left medial frontal lobes were clearly less activated in the users of violent games than in the control subjects. This is the brain structure humans use to control their fear or aggression.
Violent games as a cause for changes in brain activity?
A study in fruit flies suggests that impaired glucose metabolism in glial cells contributes to neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s. Enhancing glucose transport in these cells reduced inflammation and preserved neurons, highlighting a new potential angle for therapeutic intervention.
In a study of young people with cannabis use disorder, N-acetylcysteine failed to outperform a placebo in reducing cannabis use, suggesting that the supplement may not be effective unless combined with more intensive behavioral interventions like contingency management.
A new study finds that children raised in institutions show slower physical and brain development, especially if diagnosed with ADHD. Early placement into foster care helped, but delays remained—highlighting the lasting effects of early adversity on growth and mental health.
What do anime faces, brain imaging, and curiosity games have in common? They’re all helping scientists uncover the hidden complexities of autism.
A new study suggests chronic opioid use may interfere with the brain’s natural ability to respond to placebo antidepressants. Surprisingly, ketamine’s antidepressant effects remained intact—raising intriguing questions about how drugs, expectations, and mood-regulating systems interact.
A surprising discovery in spider brains has led scientists to uncover a hidden waste removal system in the human brain. Its breakdown may explain the progressive neuron loss seen in Alzheimer’s disease, offering a new target for early intervention.
A major genetic study suggests that mental illnesses may be partly driven by immune system activity. Researchers identified 29 immune-related proteins linked to conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, many of which could be treated using existing drugs.

YORKTON – A group of Yorkton athletes
coaches and trainers traveled to Emsdetten
Germany to compete at the One World Bowl April 5-7
Two Yorkton football players — Ty Strutynski and Liam Bewcyk — with Coach Craig Czinkota and trainer Christine Knoll represented Team Canada by way of the Saskatchewan Selects
a youth football development program based out of Moose Jaw
"We (the Sask Selects) run from November to February each year and had players from under 10 to under 18 in the program
This year we were invited to participate in the One World Bowl football tournament," told Coach Craig Czinkota to SASKTODAY.ca via e-mail
"we took two a 14U and 16U age teams."
Czinkota said it was likely past tournaments that saw the Selects get an invite to the 2024 event
"The tournament organizer has invited us in prior years looking for a Canadian representative
I’m sure they saw us play in San Antonio
and saw we were a top notch organization," said Czinkota
noting there were 47 players players total between the 14U and 16U teams
"We had great support from all the parents with the logistics moving athletes half way around the world
Making this all possible is the Selects founder and Directors Zeljko and Deb Stefanovic
Countless hours and effort goes into trying to pull something like this off," said Czinkota
with both the 14U and 16U teams coming away from the tournament with the Division Championships.
"A clean sweep for team Sask/Canada," said Czinkota
Czinkota noted that the tournament was a learning process
as the rule set for games was that of US football
so coming to Europe we were expecting well coached teams," said Czinkota
"We have a great coaching staff that gets our teams ready to compete
That experience is invaluable in preparing for something like this
Germany has been involved in American rules football for over 30 years
We were expecting tough competition and that's how we prepared," added Czinkota
"I think we showed the coaches there — who were mainly Americans living abroad — that Saskatchewan and Canada are no joke when it comes to playing four down ball," said Czinkota
smart and played the game the way it’s supposed to be
Our team mantra this trip was 'Bring the Smoke'
to bring the smoke means you are being challenged — to test your mettle."
"You always tell your opponent 'nah bro
you don’t want the smoke!,' and that is what I told our players before we left Moose Jaw
We were going to bring the smoke to show the world what we were about," said Czinkota
Czinkota said the experience will have a positive impact
"All of our athletes took away great memories and confidence in their football careers
To say you went to Europe to beat the best they had to offer is potentially life changing," said Czinkota.
"For some of these players this is their first championship of any kind and to say it’s a World Championship
that’s just surreal to think about at this time," said Czinkota
Vernon's Shanda Hill is already known globally as one of the top ultra athletes in the world
and for 2025 she is setting her sights on even more amazing feats of endurance
Hill is the only person on the planet to have completed three double deca races
A double deca is the equivalent of 10 Ironman triathlons
Last year she completed the world's first triple deca race in Italy
Hill is attempting to break the men’s world record by completing 51 Iron-distance triathlons in a single year
organized by a seasoned triathlete and is an IUTA: International Ultra Triathlon Association recognized event
She will then have a couple months to rest up before heading to Brazil for the 10x Continuous Ultra Triathlon May 1 to 16
Hill has made some changes in her personal life
She announced in January on her Facebook page that she was “taking the leap to become a full-time Ultra Triathlete.”
Hill was working as a landscaper when she was not setting world records in endurance racing
To make her dream of being a full-time ultra athlete a reality
A range of sponsorship packages are available

Coming from the small town of Munster in Germany
in 1996 I moved to the big smoke of Emsdetten and took a job at Waeco as CFO
Six short years later the founder of Waeco
gave my family and I the opportunity to move to the sunny Gold Coast of Australia to assess the current business opportunities of the local market
Somehow a ‘short’ three-year stint to examine the local market ended up as a life-changing experience
After 20 years of working in the 4×4 and lifestyle industry
it was finally time for me to find my next adventure … retirement
As one can only play so many rounds of golf before becoming the next Tiger Woods
retirement proved much slower than I had thought
Theo also let slip that he was struggling with retired life
so we thought we would let our passion for the RV and 4×4 industry fly once again
We both knew our expertise was in one specific area
so we decided to give it our all and started discussions about building a new portable fridge/freezer that would be packed with innovative features – and so myCOOLMAN was born
Having been off-roading on Fraser Island a fair few times
We thought of any and all possible features that people would look for and want in a portable fridge – something where power shorts are no longer an issue and
I am many things but skilled at opening a beer with a teaspoon is not one
so a built-in bottle opener was definitely a top priority
We wanted a portable fridge that could handle anything you could throw its way; one that’s tough and rugged for the Aussie bush
But most of all we wanted to change the way people used their portable fridges – our thinking was
It was this thought process that led to the birth of the newly released myCOOLMAN Power Pack
which is by far the most exciting product design and development process I have been involved in over my entire career
It has given way to a whole new range of opportunities in the 4×4 industry
adventurers can truly explore off the beaten track and not be dependent on their vehicle or a heavy cumbersome product for power and
myCOOLMAN has become everything I’ve ever wanted in a camping fridge
Having Theo’s unwavering knowledge of compressors and all things technical has enabled myCOOLMAN to build the best compressor and fridges the market has ever seen
we were able to create and release an entire range of portable fridges in one hit (which no one has ever done before) – seven fridges in the beginning
Releasing our very own fridge onto the market was one of the most nerve-racking and exciting few months I’ve ever experienced
having the continuous support of lifelong business partners who have become friends
the business and our products have been met by the local and global industry with open arms
We hope you love and enjoy our myCOOLMAN products as much as we do
