Designed in 1951 for David and Christine Weisblat, the 2,429-square-foot home has two bedrooms while the bedrooms are designated to a separate wing Additional spaces were built in 1961 by Wright’s apprentices It includes Wright’s signature built-in furniture and a large hearth in the open-plan living space Further west in Kalamazoo, the Winn House is another iteration of Wright’s Usonian vision Completed in 1953 for Robert and Winifred Winn the 2,469-square-foot home sits on two wooded acres overlooking Little Asylum Lake With a curved façade and walls of glass that frame the surrounding nature the home highlights Wright’s ability to blend both form and function it remains a testament to the architect’s strong impact in the Midwest © 2023 Hudson One Media, LLC. We recently came across a nearby play venue designed for little humans, and parents alike, that made for a fine outing on a late Saturday morning.  Little Kids Town, about 15 minutes outside of Wiesbaden in Eppstein, provides a safe, clean space for children 6 and under to play, while parents can take a well-deserved breather.  The tiny downtown main street is home to seven different play areas that include a doctor’s office, a grocery store, a fire station and more. A reasonably spacious cafe with seating for 20-30 guests and free Wi-Fi allows parents enough distance to relax or squeeze in some remote work while keeping an eye on the children.   Little Kids Town uses a reservation system to minimize congestion. During our visit, there were about 10 kids playing while five or six couples sat in the cafe enjoying drinks, pastries, and small sandwiches. My wife and I soaked in the calm atmosphere with plenty of room to stretch out with our fellow parents — a stark contrast to our normal daily bustle.    The cafe offers breakfast for two on the weekends for 13 euros. It’s standard fare with coffee, a few buns and a small assortment of meats, cheese, jams and fruit. We thought it was a nice touch and a good value.  My daughter enjoyed fulfilling her civic duties as a doctor, firefighter and construction worker while my son took to the streets spending most of his time driving around the assortment of Bobby cars.   I’m skeptical that the little utopia the children created would function as an effective society. But I didn’t hear any crying, arguing or fighting among the tiny citizens during our 2 1/2 hour stay — credit to the young ones, as that’s far more than I can say about us grown-ups in this day and age.  The staff members ask guests to help keep the large assortment of toys orderly during and after play. Between the staff and parents, we tried to keep the town tidy, but toddlers are toddlers, and it was mostly a futile effort.   The little villagers didn’t seem to mind that they might occasionally find a walkie-talkie in the grocery store’s produce section or a fireman’s helmet in the doctor’s office.  Our kids were worn out in the best of ways after a couple of hours and nodded off for an early afternoon nap on a quiet drive home. Any toddler parent would agree that such moments are priceless.   My daughter was still talking about Little Kids Town and her “new best friends” days after our visit and has asked for a return trip more times than I can count. If nothing else, the little village is certainly kid-approved. Little Kids Town Address: Hauptstrasse 97, Eppstein, Germany Hours: Monday and Wednesday, 2-6 p.m.; Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; closed on Tuesdays. Reservations required on weekends. Prices: Kids from 1 year old, 9 euros; adults, free; drinks 3-5 euros; weekend breakfast for two, 13 euros; happy hour 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (20% off admission). and it’s been painstakingly remodeled while keeping the building’s original footprint and charm fully intact on the market — and it’s already getting a lot of attention have been recognized for their work restoring homes from the famed architect with a Wright Spirit Award nomination the Eppstein House was carefully updated while still putting many signature Frank Lloyd Wright details front and center Marika Broere shared with Apartment Therapy which features Wright’s renowned Usonian design has gained a fair amount of renown over the last few years Broere and Hillebrandt tell Apartment Therapy They previously used it as an Airbnb that hosted fans of mid-century modern design from all around the world two bathroom home is nestled in a 70-acre community of other homes that were built with the guidance of Frank Lloyd Wright The home features a full wall of windows that look out to a serene outdoor sitting area with idyllic landscaping and gorgeous wooden built-ins in almost every room Large windows through the home ensure plenty of natural light streams in while the trees and hills surrounding the Eppstein House make the numerous outdoor spaces feel very private Broere and Hillebrandt wanted to keep the home’s integrity intact making sure to repair and treat all the original woodwork While many details were a refresh on what the original homeowners created Broere and Hillebrandt also updated the Eppstein House with modern conveniences the pair added an insulated roof to replace the Usonian design that was prone to leaks Read the commentsFiled in:News The home you love starts here The home you love starts here Apartment TherapyThe wordmark for the Apartment Therapy brand.More From Us By subscribing, you acknowledge and agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. 2024Save this storySaveSave this storySaveLast fall a rare opportunity presented itself when a pair of neighboring Usonian houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright were listed together for $4.5 million there is still an opportunity to for a lover of American modernism to own a piece of history the home’s price has been reduced to $2.1 million A painting of Wright hangs in the Eppstein House a group of scientists from the Upjohn pharmaceutical company came together with plans to build a collection of homes The group purchased a little more than 20 acres of pastoral land near Kalamazoo then approached Wright to design the homes While the architect sketched out 21 houses on round one-acre sites a fifth home on the land was designed by Taliesin fellow Francis “Will” Willsey was added to the National Register of Historic Places the couple had to request a few changes from the architect’s original plans such as enlarging the children’s rooms and kitchens but Wright agreed and construction began in 1951 the clients built much of the home themselves and were tasked with constructing some of the three thousand concrete blocks that the home needed As reported by Craine’s Chicago Business Broere and Hillebrandt purchased the Eppstein House for about $400,000 in 2016 after stumbling upon it while looking for an interesting weekend getaway They took precise care in restoring the property to its original state which included updating all the appliances and adding new roofs and enjoyed the process so much that they scooped up the home next door when it became available a few years later the couple is still looking for the Eppstein House’s next steward the current owners have been listing the house on Airbnb which they describe as “very successful.” In a recent statement the couple shared that new owners could continue the residence’s current use as rental business or turn it into a primary home the Eppstein House is separated by about two acres of land from its neighbors Not a subscriber? Both homes feature narrow halls and furniture built into the walls the Eppstein features the perfect view of the woods Taber says every home has a different vibe he says the homes were damaged by people trying to modernize them you know it's through great effort the homes are pretty much like new condition The homes were built in the 1940s and 50s and took three years to build They were originally designed to be affordable housing in The Acres neighborhood While the Pratt home runs for $2.2 million and the Eppstein is at $2.4 million Taber says these prices are on the lower side for one of Wright's designs and we're also in a different economic time These homes are more significant today than they've ever been," he explained but Taber says whichever house is purchased first the owners will take the other off the market and keep it for themselves Follow FOX 17: Facebook - X (formerly Twitter) - Instagram - YouTube Milwaukee-based Eppstein Uhen Architects is getting new executive leadership will be moving to the firm's chief executive officer position with Kristin Dufek shifting from vice president to president Also, John Chapman was named vice president Current CEO Greg Uhen will remain on the board of directors through 2023 Uhen will be transitioning from his current design leadership role selling a majority of his controlling shares in the company and moving to a more advisory board position for the upcoming years “Many architecture firms get tripped up on succession planning," Tennessen said. "We’ve been planning this for a long time and it’s fulfilling to get past the pandemic “EUA succeeds because of our exceptional people who love the practice of architecture and who trust and challenge each other which translates into the way we serve our clients," Dufek said EUA is Milwaukee’s largest architecture firm It also has offices in Madison and Denver Tom Daykin can be emailed at tdaykin@jrn.com and followed on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Al Jones | ajones5@mlive.comKALAMAZOO MI - One of the cluster of Kalamazoo-area houses designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright is for sale in Galesburg That is far less than many Frank Lloyd Wright houses "It is the cheapest Frank Lloyd Wright home in the country that we can find," said Taber, a real estate professional with Jaqua Realtors in Kalamazoo The latter are usually larger Frank Lloyd Wright-designed houses in places like Pleasantville form-follows-function style that Wright developed in the late 1930s "run in the $600,000 to $800,000 range," Taber said "Usonians are a little cheaper." It also employs such practical living features as radiant-floor heating and built-in shelving and cabinetry But it was built without much storage space or a garage The Eppstein House has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 2,250 square feet of living space Its living room has 10-foot-high windows to allow for natural light They face north for a view into a natural valley and meadow The living room has one of the dwelling's two floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and is centered in such a way that it serves the dining room and kitchen as well as the living room designed to be a second living room for children to use when adults were entertaining That room looks out onto a terrace with a view of a cement in-ground swimming pool that was an addition to the property A radiant-floor heating system serves the main area of the house The house is one of eight Frank Lloyd Wright houses built after a group of 12 Upjohn Co scientists hired Wright to visit Kalamazoo in the late 1940s and draft architectural plans for them They wanted houses they could build themselves or have someone help them build Samuel Eppstein was a research scientist for The Upjohn Co. Dorothy Eppstein worked in research labs at Upjohn and flew U.S military aircraft in World War II as a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots They had been married about six months when they and their fellow workers began collaborating to build houses But of two residential communities he designed here only eight Wright houses were built -- four in Kalamazoo and four in Galesburg Along with those in the Galesburg cooperative community is a fifth residence that was designed by Wright protege Francis "Will" Willsey it utilized classic Wright principles and is historically significant for that and for being completed in 1959 Another selling point of the Eppstein House is its neighborhood whose construction started in 1949 and ended in 1953 the only remaining neighborhood fully designed by Wright "It's a one-of-a-kind house in a one-of-a-king neighborhood," Taber said "It's the only Frank Lloyd Wright-development of its kind because it didn't get overdeveloped." He said Wright designed the 70-acre residential plat to accommodate 21 houses each situated on one circular acre of land That was intended to leave 50 acres of open But only five homes were built in The Acres Some say that was because the distance to Galesburg from Kalamazoo where most of the prospective homeowners worked and lived was cumbersome before the construction of Interstate-94 That also caused some to favor the development of The Parkwyn Village in Kalamazoo's Winchell Neighborhood It was a 40-acre cooperative community designed by Wright with 40 circular and semi-circular lots Four FLW homes were built there adjacent to Asylum Lake on Taliesin Drive (named for Wright's firm Residential lots in the area were sold and houses designed by other architects were built there over the years "All the other (Frank Lloyd Wright) developments they ended up selling the other lots and they just didn't stick with the original plan they didn't.They didn't break up the platting each house in The Acres (also known as Galesburg Country Homes) and the neighborhood itself are on the National Register of Historic Places An association of homeowners owns all the undeveloped acreage there -- wooded And Taber said they have no intention to sell it assuming that would threaten the area's historical significance a businessman and investor who lived in Indiana when he made the purchase about 20 years ago The house has not been lived in for about 18 years But Taber said Kane is interested in selling to someone who may want it as a primary residence; or someone who will make sure the house is properly maintained Taber said the house has required more than $300,000 worth of work over the past few years That has included a new roof and lots of exterior work That included the restoration of its hand-made concrete block and mahogany window frames and facia of the roof it was in the worse condition," Taber said it's got to be close to the best." Taber said about 35 people attended a recent open house at the property But many were there just to see a Frank Lloyd Wright house rather than buy one He said they included people from Pennsylvania While some said they made a special trip to see the house others appeared to have diverted their travel plans from another location in order to include the visit Why do people like Frank Lloyd Wright homes "Mainly because of the historical significance," Taber said It's unique that they're in Kalamazoo." "If it wasn't for group from Upjohn .. In a memoire that explained how they came to build the house Dorothy Eppstein sad the true cost of the house was about $45,000 "Which came out of the salary from Upjohn's In those days a Ph.D scientist made about $10,000 a year Frank Lloyd Wright got paid a commission for the original part of the house but not for all the subsequent building." Chicago-based architect who was instrumental in developing the Prairie School style of architecture a quintessentially American style of domestic architecture that broke away from the European styles that most American copied to build their homes in the early 1900s His houses were typically low buildings with clean and broad horizontal lines They were designs that used natural and unfinished materials Wright also promoted the concept of organic architecture designs that complemented the surrounding landscape And he developed the concept of the Usonian home the single-story precursor to ranch-style homes They were usually small houses built with natural materials flat roofs and large overhangs to facilitate natural cooling and solar heating MLive writer Al Jones may be contacted at ajones5@mlive.com. It was eventually sold for $368,000 to Marika Broere and Tony Hillebrandt, who painstakingly restored the three-bedroom in Galesburg The project of bringing the Usonian back to life took just over a year during which period the owners restored the concrete block walls updated the bathrooms with salvaged 1950s tiles and furnished the home with original pieces by Wright and other designers from the midcentury period They even removed a pool that was not part of the architect’s original vision The result is a historically sensitive take—with modern amenities—on what was considered at the time of sale the least-expensive Wright-designed residence on the market. Taber said there are fewer than 50 Usonian homes in the world designed by Wright that still exist He added that these two homes belong to the same owners "It's the first time there's been a single owner for two Wright Usonian homes at the same time," he said the houses are in the same development and on adjacent lots This is the first time in the history of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture that two neighboring homes have been offered together in one sale Both works of art are on Hawthorne Drive off 36th Street South between East ML Avenue and East MN Avenue in Galesburg The Eppstein House is at 11090 and the Pratt House is at 11036 Galesburg is about 132 miles west of Detroit between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek The houses are about 10 miles from the Kalamazoo International Airport and an hour’s drive from South Haven and Saugatuck but you're close to everything," Taber said Schutte and Taber said the history of the two homes goes back to a 1947 project taken on by a group of Upjohn Company researchers The group wanted to build a community of modern convinced the legendary architect to design the homes Their plans called for the homeowners to build their houses themselves with Wright’s guidance They named the project the Galesburg Country Homes Plans initially called for 21 homes but only five were built and only four were designed by Wright The Pratt house was built in 1951 and the Eppstein house was built in 1953 Schutte said the fifth house was designed after Wright's death by one of his students Marika Broere and Tony Hillebrandt bought the Eppstein House and Pratt House in 2016. They then spent the next five years lovingly restoring them. The two also made the houses available for rent on Airbnb and HomeAway Schutte and Taber said the homes are as Wright envisioned them but with modern electric The 2,250-square-foot Eppstein House has an open floor plan with large windows as well as three bedrooms two bathrooms and three terraces all on a single level It boasts two living areas with fireplaces and built-in furniture designed by Wright There's also a 10-foot floor-to-ceiling glass façade that opens to a terrace a library/music room and a large space for entertaining It also has a cantilevered carport that's a trademark of Usonian homes and multiple outdoor terraces there's a workshop/office that once was the original owner’s pottery studio They are artwork and every person gets their own feelings from them but they have a peaceful It feels like the outdoors is coming inside the house in each of the homes they're very livable with lots of light," she said just great inside of them because the light is so gorgeous." Both Schutte and Taber said the more time someone spends in each of the homes They also said they think the homes are perfect for anyone who appreciates Wright's designs "I think they're perfect for someone who isn't looking at the homes as an investment but as pieces of artwork that they can live in," Taber said Schutte agreed and said the two homes would also be great for someone who is looking to rent them out as an Airbnb like the current owners did But she said the possibilities are endless and they would be great for a quiet "It could be someone who just loves architecture it could be someone who loves mid-century modern homes," she said and they happen to be Frank Lloyd Wright designs."
