From Germany’s Rulantica to Dubai’s Aquaventure Water Park
we look at the region’s best aquatic attractions
can be found in countries across the region
The attendance figures used here come from the TEA/AECOM 2023 Theme Index and Museum Index. The report is presented by Storyland Studios, a global experience design and strategy firm
The 2023 report is the first since the pandemic to be based on attendance-based rankings
This reflects the first year post-pandemic to be fully free from restrictions
It shares that the top 10 water parks in the EMEA region have set a new record for attendance
Visitor numbers for 2023 exceed the 2019 figures by almost 3.5 million
With 1.86 million annual guests, Therme Erding is Europe’s most visited water park. The 185,000-square-metre venue houses the world’s largest thermal bath and spa complex
Before the launch of Therme Erding’s aquatic attractions
Opened in 1999, Therme Erding features 27 indoor and outdoor slides spanning 2.7km in length. The majority of these were supplied by wiegand.waterrides, a leading water rides and attraction provider
Highlights include the longest tube slide in the world and a virtual reality (VR) waterslide experience
“The other water parks and spas in Germany are very small,” Marcus Maier, Therme Erding’s general manager, told blooloop. “In my eyes, we are more an entertainment park, like Europa-Park or Phantasialand.”
Aquaventure at Atlantis the Palm in Dubai is the largest water park in the world and welcomes 1.8 million visits per year. The Dubai park is one of three Atlantis Aquaventure attractions
It features 79 thrilling slides and water rides
Its six water slide complex from WhiteWater was added in 2013
and includes a extraordinary range of features that are unique to the park
17 of the park’s waterslides were provided by ProSlideTechnology for phase three of the recent Atlantis Aquaventure expansion
“The water rides ProSlide installed are second-to-none and are the perfect complement for our vision for Atlantis to be among the world’s best water parks,” said Sascha Triemer
He added: “Their technology, innovation, and creative design have brought Atlantis to a completely new and higher level in the destination industry that could not have been achieved with any other water ride manufacturer.”
Aquaventure became the Middle East’s first Certified Autism Center (CAC) in 2023. Kelly Timmins, Atlantis Dubai’s director of marine animal operations and sustainability
said the CAC accreditation “emphasises our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.”
Therme Bucharest is one of two Therme attractions on the list
and reflects a global trend for hybrid wellness and leisure facilities noted in the report
combines water park attractions and wellbeing treatments with art
the company’s resorts offer wave pools and waterslides
as well as immersive art and botanical gardens
In 2024, Therme Bucharest announced that it had received a record number of international guests in the previous year
This was accompanied by strong repeat visits from Bucharest residents
“With an increased global recognition of the Therme concept
30 percent of visitors to Therme are shown to be guests from outside of Romania,” Therme Group said in a press release
Prague’s Aquapalace water park occupies an area of 9,150 square metres, making it the largest in Central Europe. As well as the water park
The water park is located in Čestlice and opened in May 2008.
The park features connected indoor and outdoor areas, with rides and attractions that include the longest waterslide in the Czech Republic
Aquapalace also has a 450-metre-long winding river
and pools in three areas – Palace of Adventures
Palace of Relaxation and Palace of Treasures
Acquired by Parques Reunidos for €226 million in 2018, Tropical Islands is an indoor water park in Brandenburg
Billed as the largest tropical resort in Europe
the 66,000-square-metre park opened in 2004
The park can house up to 8,200 visitors daily and features attractions including the longest double racer in the world and the highest waterslide tower in Germany
“Germany is a strategic market for Parques Reunidos,” said Richard Golding, chairman of Parques Reunidos
“As well as representing a truly unique opportunity in itself
Tropical Islands also reinforces our market positioning in the country
where together with Movie Park and Belantis we will reach three million visitors.”
In 2023, the park added a new themed hotel, Ohana Lodge. Its accompanying social hub includes a restaurant and range of entertainment options

in the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards for eight consecutive years.
Siam Park is owned by Wolfgang Kiessling
“What other parks do is theming,” his son
buy materials and work with local craftsmen so that what we build is authentic.” He added: “We control the ride experience like no other water park in the world
We are not plastic fantastic – we are about sensation and emotion.”
Attractions at the Siam-themed park include waterslides such as Singha, Kinnaree, Vulcano and the Tower of Power. The Lost City by WhiteWater, a leading water park manufacturer, offers an additional 15 slides
The Mai Thai River is one of the longest lazy rivers in the world
In 2023, the park opened Saifa
a custom-designed Dueling PIPElineBLAST water coaster
This extended the park’s slate of ProSlide attractions
and continues the relationship between the two companies which has been ongoing since 2008
I would say it’s the most variable water coaster in the world; for every moment of this ride
or you’re spiralling – it’s got the same entertainment value as a roller coaster
“This is a serious custom design of a duelling water coaster that uses every best attribute and feature that we put together.”
Europa-Park’s €180m Rulantica water world opened in 2019 with 25 water attractions, including 17 slides, across 32,600 square metres. Inspired by a fictional Norwegian island
Rulantica is the largest single investment in Europa-Park’s history
The water park’s centrepiece is the Surf Fjørd wave pool
while the Vinterhal ice palace houses most of Rulantica’s biggest attractions
Vildstrøm is a wild river, while Snorri’s Saga is the name of the park’s lazy river. The Skip Strand adventure pool includes a sunken ship feature and water obstacle course, and Trølldal is a water playground and shallow pool inhabited by trolls. Rulantica has several themed F&B outlets
Jeff Havlik, vice president at Rulantica planner PGAV, a global leader in the planning and design of unique destinations</strong>&amp;amp;lt;/strong>

He said: “Focusing on the guest experience at every turn has resulted in an immersive
thematic guest experience from the parking lot
to even the support spaces like the locker rooms.”
Jeff Janovich, vice president of business development for ProSlide
said: “In terms of the level of detail
the storytelling and environment that they’ve created
this is on a par with Disney and Universal
Those guys have done it for outdoor water parks
but no one’s done it on this level for indoor parks.”

Owen Ralph visits Therme Erding in Bavaria
in addition to arguably three world-class water parks
Located at Brandenburg outside Berlin, Tropical Islands is a huge facility located inside a former Zeppelin hanger. The building alone is a showstopper. Since 2019, Rulantica has offered Europa-Park guests the opportunity to step inside a Nordic-themed water world
Yet for sheer variety of slides, saunas and relaxation opportunities, Bavaria’s Therme Erding is untouchable, spanning an area of 185,000 square metres. With around 1.8 million annual guests, it’s also comfortably the country’s busiest water complex
outside the town of Erding (home of the famous Erdinger Weissbier)
The indoor water park debuted in 2007 and features 19 intertwined attractions of varying intensity
Added seven years later was the adjacent South Seas-inspired wave pool
Covered by a 2,600 square metre glass roof
As swimmers experience waves of five different strengths and up to 2 metres in height
they are overlooked by real palm trees and the galleon-like facade of Hotel Victory
The hotel’s 128 rooms offer a choice of nautical and palace-like interiors
the 94-room Victory Guesthouse opened in 2016
as the facility not only made a highly successful entry into the short break market but also launched an outdoor water park extension
It’s this area that really comes alive in summer with its many sun loungers and beach-like relaxation areas
In total, Therme Erding’s 27 indoor and outdoor slides span 2.7km in length. The majority were supplied by wiegand.waterrides, a leading water rides and attraction provider
Therme Erding functioned purely as a thermal bath facility
It is now home to the largest spa complex in the world
The 13,363 square metre area comprises 27 ‘textile-free’ saunas and steam baths
experiences include everything from authentic Roman
Alpine and Finnish saunas to an observatory and even a bakery sauna
Bathing is available in a network of five outdoor and indoor pools
The central Champagne Pool is covered by a 56m diameter retractable roof
Those that prefer to wear a swimming costume may gravitate towards the VitalOase (VitalityOasis)
This bridges the water park and the main spa area and features seven saunas as well as whirlpools
the 34°C waters of the Vitality Pool are complemented by a terrace pool adjoining the Culinarium restaurant
Together the water park and spa areas can accommodate up to 7,000 guests at a time
The thermal water that is pumped into the majority of Therme Erding’s pools originates from the Ardeo spring more than 2km below ground
The sulphurous water source was discovered in 1983 by Texaco while drilling for oil outside of Erding
it was not until October 1999 that phase one of what we now know as Therme Erding opened to the public
the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment officially recognised the water source
Today the mouth of the spring can be viewed beneath a glass pyramid outside the VitaleOase.
The complex was built at a cost €225 million by the late Josef Wund, who also designed the German pavilion at the 2000 World Expo in Hannover
Faced with scepticism of his plans from local politicians
he and his son Jörg Wund decided to operate it themselves
Mr Wund realised it’s more profitable to run a thermal waterpark than build one,” says Marcus Maier
Wund Holding went on to develop smaller but similar facilities elsewhere in Southern Germany including Therme Bad Wörishofen
as well as Therme Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia
Josef Wund died in a plane crash in December 2017 at the age of 79
Ownership of Therme Erding and Bad Wörishofen
also in Bavaria, then passed to Jörg Wund
with Wund Holding retaining control of the other three
Today the main spa/sauna area of Therme Erding accounts for around one-third (500-550,000) of its annual attendance
The water slides and attractions entertain between 1.2 and 1.3 million
Yet there is some overlap since combi-tickets are available
versus €46 for just the waterpark/VitaleOase
Therme Erding’s total attendance for 2022 was expected to be between 1.5 and 1.6 million
since there were still capacity restrictions for the first few months of the year
Notable slides and attractions within the Galaxy Slide World include the longest tube slide in the world
as well a 67m speed slide on which guests can reach up to 72km/h
The outdoor attractions are anchored by the six-lane Rainbow Racer, but for many, the highlight of the entire water park is The Big Wave. This show-stopping hybrid stainless steel water slide was launched in 2019 and comprises two attractions from wiegand.waterrides
a Big Bang (funnel) and Sidewinder (halfpipe)
this is currently the longest raft waterslide in Germany. With a maximum height of 18m and a top speed of 45 km/h
“The outdoor slides are a really good attraction,” says Maier
But if you go to other thermal baths when the sun is shining
After a brief period of operation in December and subsequent fine-tuning
an indoor version of The Big Wave will be launched after Christmas
With the exception of a few fibreglass (GFK) chutes, most of Therme Erding’s slides are of stainless steel construction
“We are very content with Wiegand,” says Maier
“With GFK you always have to be careful because with the joints you can hurt yourself
Sometimes the slide control staff have to close the Black Mamba in the morning to make repairs
Therme Erding was also one of the first waterparks to offer a virtual reality water slide experience
The VRSlide technology employed in Erding was provided by the US firm Ballast
whose team was accommodated on-site for one year to perfect the system
This was rolled out to two existing indoor slides
The headsets use advanced AI to monitor each user’s position and automatically adjust their position within the VR experience. The real-time rendered content
guests can bob up and down almost all day long in Therme Erding’s wave pool
Developed by API Water Fun based on an original idea by Josef Wund
it works by pumping air into the water and sucking it back out again.
“A normal wave machine uses a lot of energy,” says Maier. “We pay about €5 for one hour of waves. In other parks, it’s about €30. So we have the waves running nearly all the time; we just make a break of 10 minutes every hour so no one gets seasick and for the benefit of the employees.”
The park’s crazy river is powered by a more rudimentary system using a boat motor
This delivers just the right amount of water flow
In addition to the suppliers already mentioned
Therme Erding works with water technology specialist Atzwanger
whose systems are installed in 11 of its pools
“The other water parks and spas in Germany are very small,” says Maier. “In my eyes, we are more an entertainment park, like Europa-Park or Phantasialand.”
the average length of stay is certainly longer than some water-based facilities
What does Maier make of Europa-Park’s entry into the market with Rulantica
but people who have been to both tell us we are more like a vacation.”
guests can kick back on of many sun loungers or grab a drink from the swim-up bar
A four-drink limit minimises any unruly behaviour
Cashless wristband payment makes monitoring this possible
it’s also a convenient cash-free option for guests
The adjacent stage area is the setting for Therme Erding’s regular festivals and events
The more serene spa and sauna area tends to attract older guests
Whilst 75% of those who visit Therme Erding come from Germany
the water destination is gaining a growing following from non-German speaking countries
People are coming from more and more countries
The two on-site hotels have totally transformed the business model of Therme Erding
Although we have some families who stay for four or five days,” says Maier
overnight guests travel 250km on average to enjoy the Therme Erding experience
With rooms priced from €250 to over €300 per night and waterpark/spa entry extra
the facility caters to a relatively affluent guest
“In Munich, there are eight or nine DAX [German stock market] companies; there are a lot of people who have a very good income. Also, I think if you are travelling from Hamburg, Switzerland, or Vienna, it’s a vacation or a once-in-a-lifetime experience
People like to spend money if it’s something special.”
Maier contrasts this to typical thermal baths where
You don’t have to stay overnight to enjoy a little extra relaxation or splash the cash at Therme Erding
In addition to the 4,500 free sun loungers spread throughout the facility
loungers and spaces in the water park/wave pool areas alone
there are daytime hideaways to suit every taste and budget
Therme Erding fans can even pay to have a plaque with their name on a palm tree
The latest offering is 16 palm lounges close to the wave pool but away from the hustle and bustle below
This newly-created real estate in the treetops offers comfortable seating
a minibar and a Dyson ventilator for up to six guests per lounge
four new Alm Chalets will be added over the winter
The Therme’s team can’t build such offerings quickly enough
“Our most expensive chalet has a whirlpool and costs €199 per day
Yet the general manager doesn’t take things for granted. “I always used to say I have the safest job ever. When the pandemic came
but you never know what the future brings.”
Inevitably: “The last three years have been very anxious for us all
“We didn’t get much money from the government
And now the situation with energy costs is crazy.”
Ticket prices were raised by 25% in 2022 to account for an increase in costs
including staff and digital investments such as a new reservation system
But you cannot charge everything back to your guests because they are suffering too.”
Fresh hotel accommodation will be key to Therme Erding’s growth over the coming years
“Without corona, it would be 3 to 4% more,” says Maier. “We have now 500 to 600 beds. Europa-Park has about 5,000
An upgrade is planned to some of the spa facilities
following the addition of a new roof over the thermal baths in 2021
“The roof wasn’t holding the water and also the air conditioning was very old,” says Maier
but the new roof looks the same as the old one
But we are safe now for the next 10 to 15 years
because it is now 16 years old,” says Maier
“But imagine if we had built a new Slide World and then corona was coming
Mr Wund told me it is better to make smaller steps
We will wait for another two to three normal years before we make the next really big investment.”

Therme Erding is the second largest thermal bath complex in Europe at 185,000 square metres (46 acres)
It is located 30 minutes drive northeast of Munich and receives around 4000 visitors every day
The BIG WAVE is a hybrid stainless steel water slide that combines two of wiegand.maelzer’s most popular slides – the Sidewinder and the Urknall
At 180 meters long The BIG WAVE is currently the longest raft waterslide in Germany. The ride starts up at 18 meters high
and at a top speed of 45 km/h riders can reach 3G for an unforgettable adrenaline-filled experience
The BIG WAVE was opened with a huge summer party including a live performance from Nico Santos
Therme Erding is also home to the VR Slide
installed by wiegand.maelzer in Spring 2018
The VR slide combines the thrill of waterslides with the technology of virtual reality. wiegand.maelzer worked with aquatic virtual reality experts Ballast Technologies to design an advanced VR system that can work with any raft waterslide
Expertly designed content is accurately mapped to the contours of the slide
controlled by a revolutionary tracking system that is easy to install and monitor
The real-time rendered experiences enhance rather than overwhelm the rider. The content can easily be refreshed to provide a new experience to encourage repeat visits and repeat rides
The unique headset is comfortable, waterproof and easy to maintain. Operator training is kept to a minimum as the system is cloud connected to allow monitoring by wiegand.maelzer. On average
a throughput of 120- 180 riders per hour can be achieved
There is a minimal amount of installation needed on the slide – just five sensors on average. The headsets use advanced AI to monitor the rider’s position and automatically adjust their position within the VR experience. Tracking is independent of wifi or bluetooth to ensure that a poor signal does not disrupt the ride
The VR Slide has generated great interest from the media and the public with nearly 10 million new impressions across the German market just around the initial opening
It is estimated that the park will recoup investment in just one year

Details have emerged as to the reason for a technical failure at Amadeus two weeks ago which affected the systems behind dozens of airlines
Amadeus has declined to reveal how many of its airline customers were hit by the outage on Monday 30 January ("commercially confidential")
but says the incident was due to a "number of contributing network factors"
The outage lasted for up to three hours and hit the ALTEA system which is used to host over 100 airlines around the world including a number of high profile airlines such as British Airways
passengers were unable to self check-in online and reservation systems
agency bookings as well as airport counter systems were also affected
other GDSs such as Travelport and Sabre were also unable to make fare queries or bookings on airlines hosted by Amadeus
occurred from a "network change to a module within our data centre enterprise network"
The change was part of an "ongoing project to upgrade one of our main distribution switch pairs and the associated network access switches" - in other words: something went wrong during maintenance work in Erding
although whether it was human or mechanical error is unclear
Amadeus is not shedding any further light on the incident - a failure which has surprised a number of figures in the tech community given that most of the systems used by GDSs are usually run in parallel
allowing a backup to kick in when a failure is reported
Amadeus says it is learning from the incident after making headlines around the world in both the tech and mainstream press
For four days at the end of June and the beginning of July the picturesque Bavarian town of Erding and its iconic Kronthaler Weiher lake was abuzz with competitive action and sporting community
The 2023 European Biathle/Triathle and Laser Run Championships took over the town from June 28 to July 2 with the mixture of top-class and development athletes giving a feeling of family togetherness.
The organiser of the 2021 UIPM Biathle Triathle WorldChampionships had the strings in his hand
Pierre Jander from Team Oberpfalz and board member of the German Federation took up the challenge of organising this international event and was quickly flooded with registrations.
Around 640 participants from 25 Nations had registered — the largest group (188) coming from Great Britain
Germany entered the race with 130 athletes
followed by Hungary with 70 athletes.
In total there were more than 1600 starts during the 4 days of competition
Erding is a city in Bavaria only a few kilometers away from Munich airport
Erding also had something else to offer this weekend - the athletes and especially the coaches were happy that the Old Town Festival was taking place at the same time as the championships.
The competition site was compact and very spectator-friendly
but also workable for the competitions that UIPM Technical Delegate Karman Sandor had in mind
Sports commentator was again Andreas Groß known in Germany as “the voice of Biathle/Triathle/Laser Run”
He energised the spectators and gave the athletes goosebumps with his commentary
winner of the gold medal in the 40+ Biathle said about Kronthaler Weiher “It is still one of the most beautiful
cleanest and warmest lakes I have ever swum in.”

There are two distinct areas at Therme Erding
swimsuit-required Tropical Spa and Water Park
This erlebnisbad (adventure pool) consists of a large spa pool area
The second area is the textile-free (nude) Vitality Oasis (also called the Vital Therme) only accessible to those 16 and older
which has a massive series of spa pools and numerous saunas
you will be given a wristband that opens your assigned locker and can be used for any charges at the restaurants or bars
You can pay your total bill via credit card before you leave
The vast locker room has changing cubicles for privacy
Don your swimsuit and make sure everyone is wearing their wristband
You will need to tap it on the entry turnstile for the different areas
If are heading to the swimsuit-required spa and water park
I suggest you stash the rest of your stuff
in the locker before following the blue arrows
If you are heading to the textile-free (nude) spa
then put your robe or towel over your swimsuit
Enjoy exploring this huge indoor tropical oasis
The water park area boasts 10 big tube slides
plus a smaller play area perfect for little kids
There is also an outdoor slide area that is closed in the winter
Near the wave pool you’ll find access to the heated outdoor spa circuit
Across the facility is the spa area where you can take in a facial mud mask
If you choose to enter the textile-free zone
be prepared for an incredible Roman-themed spa experience
After the turnstile you will enter a foyer space where you can stash your swimsuit in one of the cubbies
Continue to wear your robe or towel when walking around the spa but take it off and hang it on the hooks when entering a pool or sauna
Don’t miss participating in a few of the special programs and ceremonies
meditating to a singing bowl or being wafted with intense heat
Spend the whole day enjoying family time in the healing waters and exciting pools or submit to total relaxation in the adult area

Meine Familie & ich continues its ambitious workshop project in German schools after the successful first round at the European School in Bornheim near Bonn
Europe’s biggest food magazine has taken up the cause of inspiring young people to get involved in culinary matters hands-on themselves
There is no need to grab a ready-made meal
even if everything is meant to be done quickly and easily today
and healthy food is really delicious when Jörg Götte
13 students from grades six to eleven had gathered at the school kitchen to create a three-course menu together on Thursday
as well as crunchy candies with quark filling and fruit salad
“The girls and boys have really thrown themselves into it today”
“They were all very concentrated and pitched in brilliantly: whether chopping things
cutting up the chickens or tidying up the kitchen and washing up after having lunch together
The teachers Barbara Brunner and Alexander Korfhage
who offer cooking courses as an elective subject in the school kitchen themselves
had asked Meine Familie & ich to come to Erding
They are pleased with the very successful morning: Everyone had a lot of fun
“I picked up one or two tricks from Jörg as well”
“I’ve no idea why I have been peeling and deseeding a melon in such a complicated way so far
a lot quicker and more of the melon is left to be eaten as well.”
Above 1000 meters in the mountains and in the kitchen you generally use the informal German “Du”
teaching and learning works on an equal footing
A sense of humor is the main ingredient in the recipe
giving it the extra something: “In order to get children and young people excited about cooking
you simply need to have fun yourself and not take yourself too seriously
insisting on looking over the shoulder of the 12 to 18-year-old junior chefs to see what was in their pots
„I’m totally pleased to see that our workshop concept is received so well
and other students are motivated to choose cooking courses as an elective subject as well for instance
And school directors are inspired to perhaps extend the activities at their schools in this area."
Both the workshop concept and the sumptuous results his students achieved were certainly to the liking of Hans-Joachim Fuhrig
director of the Korbinian Aigner Gymnasium

Tasha Erding and Sarah Peck recruited 250 Centennial High School classmates and staff — and ended up packing 54,432 meals
fortified meal costs just 22 cents and takes less than a minute to package
But this small act of charity times 50,000 could make a big impact
So the pair of Centennial High School seniors organized 250 classmates and staff members who packed 54,432 meals for the global hunger charity
Students worked in shifts during the school day on Sept
and we like the mission to feed hungry kids," Erding said
The two friends had packed meals for the Coon Rapids-based charity before but never on this scale
When they approached the charity last winter with their idea of hosting a large school event
the girls realized they needed to raise $11,000 to pay for food supplies
An anonymous donor through Eagle Brook Church covered the costs
Then the girls started recruiting classmates to help
"It wasn't hard to get volunteers at all
We had more people sign up than we actually needed," Peck said
They tell you the story of the children getting food
It's great to see the effect the food has on the children when you watch the video."
Centennial High Assistant Principal Bryan Carlson complimented the girl's follow-through
"The part that was so cool about this is it was all driven by these two and other students," Carlson said

3 minutes VR slide at Germany’s Galaxy Erding (Photo Credit: BallastVR.com) Virtual reality (VR)-enhanced roller coasters that keep fans at the edge of their seats are not a new concept
Visitors aboard the Superman: Ride of Steel coaster at Six Flags in Maryland have been immersing themselves in the superhero’s world since 2016
Ohio’s suspended Iron Dragon ride have been dodging ogres and orcs since 2017
But given that water does not bode well for the sensitive VR electronics
the experience has been harder to offer for water slides
changed recently with the opening of the Space Glider
the ride takes the exciting experience to a whole new level by offering thrill-seekers the choice of three fascinating worlds – Space
riders can glide through a magical alien world
follow beautiful butterflies around floating islands
or immerse themselves in a white winter wonderland
To make the experience even more heart-stopping
the 160-meter (520-ft)-long ride that lasts about 35 seconds has two uphill tracks that provide a roller coaster-like journey
which has been successfully tested by almost 10,000 park goers since it opened in February 2018
The specially-created waterproof headsets can be submerged without harming the delicate Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile devices
which run the custom software for the VR experiences
allowing park operators to seamlessly swap out sets throughout the day
was providing an optimal VR experience for everyone
water slide speeds vary depending on the weight of the person
Ballast installed smart sensors in strategic areas along the slide to keep track of the rider’s progress at all times
allows the custom software to adjust his/her location within the virtual world accordingly
Though Ballast is thrilled at Space Glider’s success
They want to create an experience where guests will be able to swim underwater amid pods of virtual dolphins
and even sharks – without having to wear the clunky headsets

Newcastle will try to sign Paris-St Germain's Turkey striker Mevlut Erding in this transfer window.
Manager Alan Pardew was forced to abandon plans to sign Modibo Maiga last month when the Sochaux forward failed a medical – despite a £7m fee having already been agreed – but he is eager to sign another striker during the current transfer window.
Newcastle officials have been at pains to distance themselves from repeated stories linking Andy Carroll with a return to the club he left for £35m this time last year.
Instead, they are once more looking to the French market as they seek to build on an impressive first half of the season.
Newcastle held extensive talks with Erding during the summer but the deal fell through then because of financial differences. Now the 24-year-old Turkish international is concerned over his future at PSG because of the impending influx of high-profile players and is ready to leave during the transfer window.
That has prompted Newcastle's senior figures to prepare a second attempt to take the forward – who has scored only once in 17 appearances this term – to the North-east.
The Paris club, who currently lead Ligue 1, will look to recoup most of the £7m they paid Sochaux just over two years ago and that is within Newcastle's transfer budget.

anyone who fancies taking the waters should forget their swimming costume and dive right in
It's not the nudity that shocks visitors to Europe's largest thermal spa
On a wintry Friday evening on the outskirts of Munich
post-work pals aren't watching TV or heading out for drinks
Instead they're sitting at Therme Erding's pool bar wearing nothing but an electronic wrist tag
which tots up how many half pints of local Erdinger lager they've supped through the night
It's a classy Center Parcs – with frankfurters
a hedonistic playground as painted by Hieronymus Bosch
Hundreds of happy bathers aged from 18 to 80 splash naked in 34C healing springs
Couples piggyback through deeper waters like pairs of mating frogs
A century ago Germany's spa scene was strictly high society
The likes of King Edward VII and Russian Tsar Nicholas II "took the waters" in ritzy retreats such as Bad Homburg and Marienbad
Therme Erding's thermal source was only discovered by accident by the US petroleum giant Texaco in 1983
the energy firm drilled for oil but found only a steaming lake of mineral-rich water
It's now one of new breed of family-friendly spas across the country
replacing herbal cures and laxatives with hammams and waterslides
Therme Erding's changing rooms – some unisex
some segregated – lead out to Tropical Paradise
This zone is the largest non-naturist area of the 36-acre complex
At its centre bubbles a steamy healing cauldron the size of a football field
the entire roof peels open to the sunshine; in winter rock concerts are held
My wife may want to relax but I'm keen to dive headlong into my first spa experience
It's to Therme Erding's new indoor water park
a short walk through the children's thermal playground
it's a mile or so of state-of-the-art slides
We take an elevator up to the highest slide (yep
no stairs to climb here) and recline on a two-person inflatable sofa
In front of us is a tunnel so wide that you could drive a Fiat Panda through it
My spatial awareness is governed only by my wife's open-mouthed screams and the g-force in the pit of my stomach
At times our inflatable chair corkscrews upwards
For a full minute we spiral downwards in pitch darkness
a sensory deprivation jarred by jets of ice water in the face
We're then dumped from a height – still screaming – into a bath-like pond
My wife utters a string of expletives that translates as: "I never want to go on another slide again."
I sense the mood calls for gentler pursuits
the largest and strictly adult-only section of the spa
A giant billboard of a nude couple makes clear that we're about to enter a compulsory clothes-off zone
We buzz our wristbands at the electronic gate and drop our towels
The first people we see are two teenage boys
they are hardly hardy specimens of Bavarian youth
Yet they are as comfortable with their nakedness as I would have been mortified at the same age
With a new sense of liberation we walk around the main Vitality Oasis lake
it's an inviting mineral-rich pond surrounded by Japanese steam baths
bubble massagers and hundreds of white reclining loungers
We try to bag one as a base for our things (newspapers
every single seat is reserved with a towel
As we float lazily in main herbal pool we spy a place for quiet pint
Therme Erding may boast an array of eateries from a Caribbean restaurant (nude) to a schnitzel joint (clothed) but nothing speaks holiday like a sunken pool bar
ringed by as many palm fronds and parasols as appear in their day-glo cocktails
Others prop up the bar and chat up the barmaid
It's microcosm of a Friday night boozer beamed across to the South Seas
We scorn such anthropological studies by indulging in our own parlour games
swimming and drinking beer in the nude is such a novelty that we can't help ourselves
One contest has us diving under water to the bar counter (you can open your eyes in the thermal shallows) then arising like Zeus to sup a pint in gales of laughter
But our japes win us dirty looks from the bar
it's where the detoxification process begins
With 25 wellness areas ranging from a Finnish log cabin to a citrus-scented hammam
Loungers in the Alhambra dry sauna are evenly spaced out around a central circle
Soft music mutes any noise from your naked neighbour
There's just enough light to read a newspaper by
Our lazy tour continues through scalding footbaths
rose-petal steam rooms and bath-like floatation pools
After four hours our winter bones are warmed to summer beach levels and we're keen to complete the true German spa cycle
To show we're not wimpy English prudes we run naked into the Bavarian night
Some locals dip into icy plunge pools and roar with wild abandon
In searing pain we dive to the bottom of the outdoor thermal pool
It's the temperature of a hot bath and we don't get out for a very long time

It's looking more and more like the provincial government could
entertain the idea of turning Ontario Place into a giant water-based entertainment complex of sorts
Theme Group — the Austrian company behind one of the world's largest indoor spa complexes — has hired the Toronto-based lobbying firm StrategyCorp to consult with city officials about "a proposal in regard to Ontario Place."
A post shared by Therme Erding (@thermeerding) on Jun 1
As journalist Matt Elliot points out in the latest edition of his City Hall Watcher newsletter
Therme is known for building and operating "giant domed spa complexes" — the kind that are popular overseas
The company currently boasts the two largest thermal bath complexes in all of Europe with Therme Bucharest in Romania and Therme Erding just outside of Munich
which spans 46 acres and includes a wide variety of themed indoor and outdoor spaces
is said to be visted by around 4,000 people every single day
A post shared by Therme Erding (@thermeerding) on Apr 13
Therme Group is a big deal with a lot of money flowing through its 14 international locations
It's not wild to think that they'd be willing to invest in soliciting a prime spot on the waterfront of Canada's biggest city
A post shared by Therme Erding (@thermeerding) on Jan 11
Premier Doug Ford is currently on a quest to "maximize investment" in the former amusement park
which is owned by both the provincial government and the City of Toronto
The provincial government announced at the end of May that it had launched a "world-wide search for development partners" to transform the 155-acre downtown Toronto landmark
Rumours of ferris wheels, malls and gambling parlours have been circulating ever since and nothing — save for condos and casinos — has been ruled out
A post shared by Therme Erding (@thermeerding) on Oct 12
It's hard to say what will come of Therme's lobbying efforts
but a year-round dome spa that serves alcohol and food wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to Ontario Place
It would be nice to have somewhere to party in our bathing suits during the nine months of the year it's too cold outside to function
Therme Erding
THE BIGGEST spa in Europe has been described as a "true spa paradise" with guests saying they left feeling "deeply relaxed"
The spa is less than two hours away from the UK and is near to one of Europe's most popular city break destinations
Therme Erding can be found just north of Munich and is visited by 5,000 people each day
looking to make use of its many facilities
One of the spa's stand out attractions is its waterpark
It's Europe's biggest "slide world" and has 28 different slides
providing something different for people of all ages
the longest tube slide in the world at 365 metres
Kamikaze and X-Treme Faser offer similarly thrilling experiences
As many as 24 different themed saunas and steam baths, including Siberian saunas and Russian Banjas mean that everyone's persuasion is catered for.
A range of different massages can be booked, while private lounges like the family rooms and lakeside chalets offer a secluded place to relax, away from the other visitors.
including four different swim-up pool bars
seafood and any number of other dishes can be ordered from a vast array of different restaurants
The majority of the resort is inside, but during the summer months
there are outdoor options to make the most of too
Additional attractions such as extra pools
a volleyball court and sunbathing facilities are opened in the thermal garden
Meanwhile, the huge glass domes that the rest of the park is kept under can be opened to allow the warm weather from outside into the park
The water is kept warm throughout the year however
with the wave pool kept at a consistently balmy 34C
Visitors can enjoy the calming motion of smaller ripples in the water
or try their hand at surfing on much larger two-metre high waves
There are even special events held at Therme Erding
including festivals featuring poolside DJs
Also coming up this year is the German waterslide racing championship
for which fans can take part and compete against others to get the fastest time down the park's slides
The spa has a total score of 4/5 on TripAdvisor
with the vast majority of people giving it the full five stars
One wrote: "Was their last week and I'm already dreaming of going back
Another simply described it as a "true sauna paradise."
A third added: "It really cannot get any more deeply relaxing and therapeutic than this."
Prices for a visit to the spa start from £20.60 for a two hour visit and go up to £42 for the whole day
Flights are available from the UK from around £68 return
Meanwhile, developers hope this new £250m water attraction will be open in Manchester by 2025
And this water attraction will be the first of its kind in the UK when it opens in Kent
