Heinemann's Hamburg-Allermöhe logistics center
Travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann is marking the 20th anniversary of its logistics center in Hamburg-Allermöhe
which continues to form a central part of the company's supply chain
The center has been supplemented since 2014 by another highly automated logistics center in Erlensee near Frankfurt
The central logistics center in Allermöhe began operations on May 19
after two and a half years of construction
The foundation of the 16,000 square meter space is anchored to 1,000 piles driven to a depth of up to 12 meters
as it was the first time the company became the owner of a self-built warehouse property outside the free port
with the largest investment in the company's history
Through the gradual relocation of all product groups to Allermöhe
the previously used storage locations are dissolved
the company inaugurated the extension of a high-bay warehouse and then in 2014
This means an additional 18,000 pallet storage spaces and 36,000 tray storage spaces: an extension of the existing storage space by 66 percent
This created the space and conditions to meet the growing demands of the travel retail market
“The truly outstanding component of the success of our logistics center is the people who make up the heart of Allermöhe," says Martin Borscheid
and many have been part of the Heinemann family for 20 years or more
The experienced teams are optimally complemented by new employees for our joint path into the future
Qualified specialists are in demand because although processes are continuously improved
specialist knowledge is necessary to ensure the often difficult handling of goods
Our logistics is particularly unique in the global travel market because nowhere else can you get everything from a single source
from the perfectly stored cigar to a €45,000 whiskey and an elegant Bulgari ring.”
the logistics center is constantly being improved – with innovative technical solutions and modern ergonomic workspaces
this means the continuous modernization and updating of existing plants and equipment
ensures that the systems are always state-of-the-art and equipped with intelligent solutions for the challenges of the future
It is crucial to carry out the replacement without disrupting ongoing operations,” says Borscheid
Innovative solutions currently being implemented include Google Glasses
a picking glass with an attached finger scanner
“We want to be carbon neutral by 2030,” says Inken Callsen
we invited our transport partners to a Sustainability Summit to find solutions to reduce CO2 emissions together
We have already achieved a lot and were able to reduce emissions by nine percent in 2022 compared to 2019
we aim to achieve another six percent reduction in order to reach our goal of 25 percent savings in 2024 compared to 2019.”
Dirk Schneider is looking to the future as well
“We must continue to meet the high demands on logistics with regards to performance
Equally important is ensuring that we can respond flexibly to capacity adjustments and resilience requirements at any time.”

Gebr Heinemann along with its implementation partner IGZ were presented the 2014 Gold SAP Quality Award
Hamburg-based travel retailer Gebr Heinemann along with its implementation partner IGZ were presented the 2014 Gold SAP Quality Award (for the region Germany/Austria/Switzerland) for the successful launch of SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) at its new logistics centre in Erlensee near Frankfurt
Gebr Heinemann started up the new logistics centre — an ultramodern full-service warehouse where 45,000 items are always in stock for use by the Heinemann Duty Free Shops
as well as by a large portion of the more than 1,000 distribution customers in 100 countries — in may last year
Around 35% of the company’s total logistics will be conducted out of Erlensee
Gebr Heinemann also runs another full-service warehouse in Hamburg
The challenge for Gebr Heinemann’s SAP EWM project in Erlensee was to realise for the first time a complex
and automatic material flow system using SAP EWM/MFS (Material Flow System) in a logistics centre of this size
Gebr Heinemann head of IT “Programme Management” Stefan Oltmanns said: “The complexity of a warehouse of such massive proportions with this high degree of automation garners considerable attention on the market
Our goal was for the SAP EWM system to handle as much as possible of our logistical requirements and by working together with our ERP and custom duties systems
to provide optimum support for the storage and inventory control processes
We can be proud that SAP recognised the achievements of our project as well as the quality of its implementation and execution by awarding Gebr Heinemann with this honour.”
SAP has been granting annual Quality Awards to companies who demonstrate outstanding performance with their SAP projects and programmes while observing SAP’s ten quality standards
