Our team hopes to be among the protagonists Thursday afternoon The first of Germany’s two races on the World Tour calendar Eschborn-Frankfurt holds its 62nd edition on the first day of May the race passes through the Taunus Hills west of Frankfurt with the peloton set to take several times on the climbs of Grosser Feldberg and Mammolshain The latter is the most important hurdle of the day as it features three times on the course and has been decisive in the past the Mammolshain will be crested the last time with 35 kilometers to go thus giving a chance to the attackers to drop the sprinters in the hope they can hold off the chasers on the flat roads taking to Frankfurt Soudal Quick-Step will go to the start of Eschborn-Frankfurt with a versatile seven-man team comprising Mattia Cattaneo Antoine Huby – who returns from injury in what will be his first outing for the Wolfpack since the beginning of February – Omloop Het Nieuwsblad runner-up Paul Magnier home favourite Maximilian Schachmann and Jordi Warlop “It’s the last important one-day race of the spring This means a small group has a chance of making it but ready also to support Paul in case of a sprint This makes us confident we can get a good result” Photo credit: ©Dario Belingheri / Getty Images to know how many times a particular page is read We only use this information to improve the content of our website These cookies are only placed after you have given your consent Australian Michael Matthews finished off a perfect Team Jayco AlUla performance in style as he sprinted to glory in Germany at Eschborn-Frankfurt. The 34-year-old took the win with his trademark sprint finish to wrap up a consistent spring campaign with a well-deserved trip to the top step of the podium. The result was more than deserved for a Team Jayco AlUla squad that ripped the 198km race a part The team powered to the front of the bunch ahead of the demanding hilly section before upping the pace and shredding the peloton to leave just 30 riders in contention. Coppi e Bartali stage winner Paul Double thenkept the tempo up while Davide De Pretto and Felix Engelhardt looked after their team leader Matthews Despite some late attacks over the final climb of the day the reduced peloton reached Frankfurt in one piece a sprint finish seemed inevitable. As the pack raced through the streets Matthews used all his experience to work his way to the front and position himself amongst his biggest rivals for the win Then with the line insight he launched his sprint surprising his competitors as he raced away to take the victory. Michael Matthews:“I think my shape through the spring was good It’s nice to finish off this block with a win here in Frankfurt It’s a race that has really suited me for a lot of years and I haven’t been able to win it so to come here with the team and the way we rode – we rode perfectly – and to execute a performance like my team did today it was the icing on top of the cake. I didn’t expect my team to go so hard on the second long climb but we split the bunch a lot and got rid of a lot of the fast guys I think the team’s performance was exceptional and to finish it off the way I did I’m so thankful to my teammates.” Michael Matthews (Team Jayco AlUla) 4:38:432 2025 Green Edge Cycling – Privacy Policy – powered by Butti Computer Australian cyclist Michael Matthews finished his spring campaign in style with victory in the Eschborn-Frankfurt one-day race on Thursday ahead of Uno-X Mobility's Magnus Cort Nielsen and Movistar's third-placed Jon Barrenetxea. The 34-year-old Jayco AlUla cyclist sprinted to his 43rd career win after his team split the peloton at the tough, hilly section of the 198km race known as the 'German Classic'. A four-time Tour de France stage winner, Matthews burnished his impressive record of winning at least one race in each of his last 16 seasons, barring Covid-hit 2021. "I think my shape through the spring was good, I just wasn't on the top step," said Matthews, who was fourth in Milan-San Remo and fifth at the Amstel Gold Race this season. "It's nice to finish off this block with a win here in Frankfurt. "It's a race that has really suited me for a lot of years and I haven't been able to win it, so to come here with the team and the way we rode – we rode perfectly – and to execute a performance like my team did today, it was the icing on top of the cake." 05:29Women's Race - Winning Moment - Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2025 04:50Men's Race - Winning Moment - Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2025 04:33Women's Race – Eschborn-Frankfurt classic the 34-year-old won the sprint at the World Tour event out of a group of around 35 riders Matteo Badilatti (32nd) and Fabio Christen (33rd) crossed the finish line at the same time as the winner Navigating uncertainty: geopolitics and market dynamics more capital market: This threefold plea ran like a common thread through the speeches of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Martin Jetter CEO Stephan Leithner and the Prime Minister of Hessen at this year's annual opening of the German Stock Exchange in Eschborn which was attended by around 650 high-ranking guests from the capital market and its environment must create the momentum for a new “get it done mindset” Martin Jetter diagnosed a general lack of courage in the face of the challenges of our time He recalled the spirit of optimism that still prevailed at the turning point of 1989 The progress that has since been made in terms of global prosperity still gave cause for optimism today it was important to hold on to a culture of mutual respect and fact-based debate – and to move forward courageously with urgently needed reforms Stephan Leithner's main thesis was: The capital market is a central part of the solution This applied both to the financing of future projects for competitiveness and to the financing of pensions He recalled the investments made by Deutsche Börse in the future viability of the European capital market the access of private and institutional investors to the capital market should now be improved more investment was required across Europe in a broad range of innovative technologies: from AI to cloud “More private-sector visionaries à la Steve Jobs and Hasso Plattner” were needed – in other words: a “get it done mindset” Frankfurt as the heart of the German financial world Minister President Boris Rhein seamlessly followed on from this in his keynote address His plea was: “We need to talk more about performance in this country again.” He described the financial centre in Frankfurt as a “central competitive factor” and a “guarantor of prosperity” and added: “It makes Europe sovereign and Frankfurt strong.” At the same time he emphasised the state government's support for the financial sector by providing a clear regulatory framework and reducing bureaucracy Sheehan as Jan Christen's solo move nullified in final kilometre Eschborn-Frankfurt(Image credit: Getty Images)(Image credit: Getty Images)(Image credit: Getty Images)(Image credit: Getty Images)(Image credit: Getty Images)The in-form Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny) sped to his second win of the season at Eschborn-Frankfurt sprinting to the win at the end of the 210km race from a greatly reduced peloton The Belgian popped up late in the sprint finish hitting the wind at the last moment to edge out Alex Aranburu (Movistar) and Riley Sheehan (Israel-Premier Tech) to take the victory Van Gils was the only Lotto-Dstny man among the 28-man lead group which reached Frankfurt surfing wheels in the final kilometre before working his way to the front on the closing straight in the slipstream of Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and then Aranburu he rounded fourth-placed neo-pro Lukas Nerurkar (EF Education-EasyPost) and another neo-pro in Sheehan before edging out Aranburu on paper the quickest finisher among the top contenders The result marks Van Gils' fourth professional victory and his first at WorldTour level He's enjoyed a very consistent spring campaign to date finishing third at Strade Bianche and La Flèche Wallonne plus fourth at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and seventh at Milan-San Remo "It's my last race of an already incredible spring To finish with a WorldTour victory is an absolute dream," Van Gils said after the finish but the team made the race hard to drop the sprinters This gave me confidence and then I just had to survive the last steep climb of Mammolshain and then just stay in the wheels and try to recover and focus on my sprint I'm riding on a really high level so I really enjoy it "Today I win a sprint and a few days back I was good in the Ardennes in climbing races and I already won a time trial this year who also won the reduced one-day version of the Vuelta a Andalucía in late March concluded by saying that he'll now turn his attention to the summer and the Tour de France which he'll prepare for with an appearance at the Tour de Suisse next month The final sprint was set up by several teams among the select lead group which had survived after a thinning-out process over the major climbs of the day which included two ascents of the Feldberg (11km at 5% and 8km at 6%) and three ascents of the Mammolshain (2.4km at 7.7%) The early break of the day – consisting of Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek) and John Degenkolb (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) – went almost from the start and hung out until the 90km to go mark up the second ascent of the Feldberg UAE Team Emirates and Lotto-Dstny had been busy working at the head of the peloton behind with the two teams keen to get rid of sprinters including Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla) Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) with large groups eventually coming to the finish five and 19 minutes down on the leaders and a few fast finishers among the front group and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) all on the move on the Feldberg Healy and Buchmann went clear on the other side pushing on together on the descent and onto flatter ground the pair would be caught after 13km on the move The final flashpoint of the day came with the final ascent of the Mammolshain getting a gap and going solo at the head of the race The 19-year-old Swiss rider would carry a slim gap forward his advantage never stretching much further beyond the 20-second mark He hit the final 10km with a slim 16-second gap and with several teams contributing to the chase behind He held on to lead by 10 seconds at the 5km mark but he'd be caught by the charging peloton at 2.3km to go It was EF and DSM-Firmenich PostNL who launched the final dash to the line inside the last kilometre but neither team would prevail at the line as Van Gils weaved his way through to hit the front at the last moment and come away with the big win Results powered by FirstCycling Dani has reported from the world's top races She has interviewed many of the sport's biggest stars and her favourite races are the Giro d'Italia The German city of Frankfurt hosts the final Spring classic The 61st edition of this classic German race is held in and to the north west of Frankfurt It compromises multiple laps of a series of loops around the outskirts of the city and that is followed 50km later by twin ascents of the shorter but much steeper 2.3km Mammolshain climb this the race returns once more to the slopes of the Feldberg before a final ascent of the Mammolshain some 40km from the finish line This large distance to the end should allow gapped riders to re-join the front of the race and form a small group to fight out a sprint finish.  The key protagonists this year are going to be March Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) Maximilian Schachmann and Emil Herzog both (BORA - hansgrohe) Mathias Vacek (Lidl - Trek) and Laurenz Rex (Intermarché - Wanty) with 21 degrees and clear skies expected for the race  Read on to see how to catch ended with the fastmen putting on a show John Degenkolb had a perfect sprint but could not overcome the speed of Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) who took the win Four-time winner Alexander Kristoff (UAE-Team Emirates) settled for third breaking his drive for five consecutive wins This race is by far the very best race in the year for me I gave it my all and the team worked really well together I think we took the maximum result that was possible It was a thrilling finish that saw a five-man breakaway caught four kilometers from the end followed by a big fight for positioning in the streets of Frankfurt Degenkolb had valuable help from Michael Gogl and Nicola Conci keeping him out of the wind and in a good position right at the front He got the better of Kristoff – winner of the last four editions – but was unable to overcome Ackermann Alex Kirsch and Kiel Reijnen attentive at the front on a climb I tried to hide myself as much as I could to keep enough power in the end Conci and Gogl did an amazing job in protecting me in the final and helping me with positioning and preparing the sprint Although Degenkolb could not match his win in 2011 to finish second eight years later is a testament to his fortitude racing past my home; it’s always something very special I had cramps for the last 40kms which was very hard you are also disappointed to not take the victory This gives us The month of May began with one of the most important races held on German soil, Eschborn-Frankfurt, which took in five climbs before a flat finish in the center of the city. Coming to the start with a young team, Soudal Quick-Step was keen on leaving its mark on the race, and seconds after the peloton exited the neutral zone, Warre Vangheluwe went on the attack. The 22-year-old Belgian, who had some solid appearance in the team jersey since turning pro at the beginning of the year, was the strongest man in the breakaway that managed to put almost five minutes into the bunch. Vangheluwe put in a remarkable effort out there, being caught only on the slopes of Feldberg, with around 80 kilometers to go, when he was already alone at the front after dropping his companions on the previous climb. Numerous attacks came from that moment on until the top of the final ascent, the Mammolshain, but somehow the reduced peloton brought back all these moves and the race came down to a sprint, won by Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny). Fausto Masnada was the first Soudal Quick-Step rider home, finishing the German World Tour race with the main group.
