Esslingen-based public transport operator Städtischer Verkehrsbetrieb Esslingen (SVE) commissioned the Skoda Group to supply 46 battery-powered trolleybuses by the end of 2026
The order also includes an option for the delivery of a further 15 trolleybuses
The city of Esslingen is investing a total of around 41.5 million euros in the purchase of the new buses
the new contract had become necessary due to the insolvency of Belgian bus manufacturer Van Hool
SVE had already ordered new trolleybuses from the Belgian company in 2022
“As energy and raw material prices have now recovered somewhat
the offer from Skoda is even more favourable than the original order from Van Hool,” said Johannes Müller
Technical Plant Manager at Städtischer Verkehrsbetrieb Esslingen
the city of Esslingen has received funding totalling 27.4 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Transport for the electrification of its local transport system
SVE is now expecting the first Skoda Group buses to be delivered in the summer of 2026
the manufacturer speaks of 46 units that have been firmly ordered
while the city of Esslingen mentions 52 buses in its own announcement
One thing is clear: Esslingen has opted for a mix of solo and articulated Škoda 32Tr and 33Tr buses
which are 12 and 18 metres long with two and three doors
The order also includes maintenance and an option for potentially 15 more e-buses
all trolleybuses are able to travel up to 25 kilometres without contact with the overhead line
SVE is not only initiating the procurement to replace old trolleybuses
but also to expand its 29-kilometre-long trolleybus network by five additional kilometres
Esslingen intends to operate a completely emission-free local transport system: “Thanks to the extensive network of routes with trolley lines
all of the transport company’s lines will be able to be operated exclusively by trolleybuses powered by green electricity from the municipal energy company Stadtwerke Esslingen (SWE),” it says
“We are very pleased that Škoda Group has been selected for this important contract,” said Karel Majer
“We look forward to closecooperation with the city of Esslingen and believe that our new trolleybuses will contribute to achieving the goal of 100% emission-free urban transport
we will continue to innovate and develop environmentally friendlymobility.”
added: “Once the new trolleybuses from Škoda Group are delivered
Esslingen will become one of the first cities in Germany with emission-free local transport
In terms of environmentally friendly mobility
this makes us an absolute pioneer throughout Germany
our municipal transport company is making a significant contribution to ensuring that we as a city achieve climateneutrality by 2040.”

Father Christmas flies his drone over Germany’s Christmas markets
hell-bent on finding the most magical for a romantic weekend break with Mrs Christmas
he decides to set the drone to one last mission
And there it is… a vision of cobblestone streets and magnificent timber-framed townhouses floodlit by firelight
Unlike many of Europe’s festive events – so often characterised by Mariah on a loop – there’s something special about medieval Esslingen
just 15km from Stuttgart in south-west Germany
It’s transporting me back to a simpler time of rousing folk music
Experiential rather than purely commercial
Esslingen Christmas market is in fact two markets rolled into one
Alongside a traditional market with all the festive gifts and foods you’d expect
where every spellbinding detail recalls life 600 years ago
A juggler mischievously named ‘Master Fleapit’
A performer on stilts meeting and greeting the crowd
I’m watching old-school craftsmen at work – from blacksmiths
glassblowers and weavers – many inviting passers-by to have a go
On one standout evening that promises to be captivating, there’s even going to be a lantern parade on 19 December from the marketplace up the hill to the castle which overlooks town
my personal dilemma is whether to opt for a dip in the medieval market’s hot tub or hold out my hands for a palmreading by Athena
Tempting as it is to sit starkers in the middle of the marketplace
I take the mystic option and emerge from the tent 20 minutes later
My favourite is that I’m going to live until I’m 98
And if that’s not a cue to head over to the traditional Christmas market to gorge on more cheese
I love weaving in and out amongst the locals indulging in all manner of winter-warmer goodies.
There’s ‘Stockbrot’ -dough twisted around a stick
and every conceivable variety of ‘Wurst’ (sausage)
There’s plenty of foodie delights to take home or buy as gifts
‘stollen’ - traditional Christmas bread with dried fruits and sometimes marzipan
and cured sausages hung up like candy sticks
I also have my eye on some wonderful Christmas gifts to elevate this year’s stockings
There are the ubiquitous gifts you see all over – from delicate wooden tree decorations to gingerbread love hearts announcing ‘ich liebe dich’ (I love you)
But there are also handmade gifts I haven’t seen before
from cute ceramic houses and glowing paper stars to biscuits from a dog bakery
Since the German Christmas market experience isn’t complete without a warm mug of Glühwein (mulled red or white wine)
as is the fact there isn’t a plastic cup in sight
only reusable ones that you return to the vendor
Cold hands wrapped around a warm mug is a moment to stand still and take it all in
Twinkling light is festooned from building to building
Each stall’s rooftop snow scene vies to outdo the next
The belltower’s Glockenspiel is chiming out its melody
one white-bearded visitor looks the most satisfied of all
All is not lost if you (or Father Christmas) don’t get here in time for the Christmas market
There are plenty of ways to enjoy south-west Germany after the throngs have gone
Esslingen whispers the quieter side of winter
Warm up at a Kessler tasting to try the wine said to be Germany’s first sparkling variety. Inspired by the Veuve Clicquot champagne house in France, Georg Christian von Kessler returned to Germany and made his own exceptional bubbles
flavoursome parcels a little like ravioli filled with sage pesto and roasted walnuts
If you want to explore the region, Stuttgart is only 10 minutes by train from Esslingen
Don’t miss the ‘Christmas Garden’ lights trail at Wilhelma Botanical Gardens and post-Christmas relaxation and 1950s charm at the Mineralbad Berg thermal waters spa
Esslingen Christmas Market runs until 22 December
Skoda will deliver a total of 46 trolleybuses to Esslingen
The local transport company – Städtischer Verkehrsbetrieb Esslingen am Neckar – has selected the Czech company as the winner of a tender to supply trolleybuses with a length of 12 metres and 18 metres for the further development of its trolleybus service
The order also includes an option to supply a further fifteen trolleybuses
The vehicles will be built on a platform with the type designation Škoda 32Tr and 33Tr
Esslingen is extending its 29-kilometre trolleybus network with an additional five kilometres of track
The 46 trolleybuses will be delivered by the end of 2026
with a total order volume of EUR 41,424,600 (excluding the option for 15 trolleybuses)
All trolleybuses will be equipped with batteries that enable autonomous operation without a catenary for distances of up to 25 km
The trolleybuses are also equipped with recovery technology
whereby the batteries are recharged with braking energy
The trolleybuses are also fully serviced by Škoda
the trolleybuses for Esslingen will be configured directly to the requirements of the Esslingen transport operator
Skoda explains that the shorter Škoda 32Tr trolleybuses will be two-door designs and the articulated Škoda 33Tr trolleybuses will be three-door designs
All vehicles will get more comfortable seats for passengers in a design more usual for intercity traffic
the trolleybuses will be equipped with an electric ramp for boarding passengers with prams or wheelchairs and will feature modern information systems and internet connectivity via an on-board Wi-Fi network
The trolleybuses will be powered by Škoda asynchronous motors
while the articulated trolleybuses will be in a twin-motor design with two driven axles (middle and rear axle)
The vehicles will also feature advanced diagnostics
including remote service access for the technical and maintenance team
“We are very pleased that Škoda Group has been selected for this important contract
We look forward to close cooperation with the city of Esslingen and believe that our new trolleybuses will contribute to achieving the goal of 100% emission-free urban transport
we will continue to innovate and develop environmentally friendly mobility,” said Karel Majer
Chairman of the Board of Škoda Electric at Škoda Group
on the delivery of the trolleybuses to Esslingen
adds: “Once the new trolleybuses from Škoda Group are delivered

rental disputes ended in disaster: a fire claimed the lives of two people
Police report that the incident was preceded by rental disputes
The victims are the 31-year-old son of the building's owner and a 61-year-old tenant who also lived in the building
The 61-year-old's tenancy agreement had already been terminated for some time and the eviction of his apartment was scheduled for the next day
Investigations indicate that there had been repeated disputes between the tenant and the landlord in the past
it is suspected that the tenant set the fire that led to the 31-year-old's death before taking his own life
Both bodies showed signs of gunshot wounds and police have recovered possible murder weapons
The bodies are now to be autopsied in order to gain further insights
The investigation is focusing on the suspicion of homicide and serious arson
The police and public prosecutor's office are working intensively to solve the case
The exact circumstances that led to this tragedy are still unclear
but the rental disputes and the imminent eviction appear to have played a central role
Investigators hope to obtain further details about the events through the autopsy of the bodies and the analysis of the evidence recovered
Rules that we thought were certain no longer apply
uncertainty characterizes our everyday lives and we need to create a new way of working together
We need moments that remind us of what we have already achieved and that we have succeeded in doing so together with our international partners
our democratic neighbors and other sister cities closer together
we are seeking contact with each other more than ever
supporting each other in these difficult times and tackling the problems together
I am therefore delighted that a delegation from Esslingen was able to travel to Sheboygan this year to further strengthen the friendship between our two cities and to agree on further joint projects
Seeing people from two nations talking to each other gives me courage and shows me that we must continue to act together and not alone if we want to preserve the peace that we have been defending for almost 80 years
I wish you a blessed Christmas in which you can talk to your loved ones
look forward to the New Year with confidence
and look forward to further encounters between Esslingen and Sheboygan

MVRDV has revealed the design of The Milestone, a new mixed-use office building to be built in the city of Esslingen, Germany
part-reflective “crystal rock” facade and a hollowed-out pixelated core
the building will become a standout new landmark and public amenity for the city
Located on a public square in Neue Weststadt near the central railway station
The Milestone will contain 70,000 square feet (6,500 square meters) of mixed-use space across 12 stories
Inspired by the city’s past and its future ambition
the design will feature reflective and interactive elements that will educate visitors and residents alike of the region’s culture and history
“This building shows Esslingen to people all who pass by on trains and will become a new symbol to reflect its past heritage and future’’, says Winy Maas, MVRDV co-founder. “The façade with fritted glass will have QR codes integrated on to it informing visitors about Esslingen’s people, landscape, and histories which makes the building an interactive library for all.”
From the open plaza, the building steps up towards the ‘esslinger grotto’, an open walkway that punctures through the building and reflects in views from the surrounding landscape. Upper levels will contain flexible, light-filled office spaces, while ground level spaces will be occupied by public amenities including a cafe, restaurant and meeting spaces.

The thoracic surgeons at the hospital had gotten the ball rolling
they decided that they wanted to perform certain lung surgeries with the help of a robot
The vascular surgeons quickly joined the team and soon
the gynaecologists and paediatricians were also on the pitch
'The first step for the medical and care team of the surgery departments was intensive robotics training in Milan
The training was so excellent that we soon decided to partner with this young company,' recalls Professor Dr Ludger Staib
Medical Director of the Department for General and Vascular Surgery
First robotic surgery for paediatric ureteropelvic junction obstruction
150 patients have undergone surgery involving the Senhance robots
gall bladder and colon surgeries in adults
the paediatric surgeons have also successfully used the system: they performed the first Senhance robotic surgery for paediatric ureteropelvic junction obstruction
'It was only the second operation that particular surgeon did with the Senhance system which shows that physicians who have a lot of experience with minimally invasive surgery very quickly feel confident using the Asensus robot,' says Professor Staib and adds that he is particularly impressed with the system’s tiny 3 mm instruments.
is the built-in tremor filter that eliminates the minute trembling of human hands
This enables ultra-precise work that human hands can hardly achieve
haptic feedback ensures that the surgeon avoids areas that should not be touched: 'The robot tells me if there is any resistance or if the stress on the tissue is too much
That is very helpful and makes the operation even safer and less taxing for the patient.' It is also less taxing for the surgeons
During the procedure they sit at an open console in front of a height-adjustable workstation and can monitor the entire OR
which is 'an important safety feature,' as Professor Staib underlines.
The system provides high resolution images in up to 6x magnification
The camera is controlled by the surgeon’s eye movements
the instruments inside the patient body are controlled by the surgeon’s hands
'We are very happy that the system is an open platform which allows us to connect our own camera,' says Professor Staib and explains that 'Asensus has developed several adapters while other manufacturers force customers to buy their optical system.'
A further – financial – advantage is the use of standard instruments and trocars
Other systems require specific components that have to be replaced after a few operations
but the Senhance system works with trocars used in hospitals
The robotic instruments can be sterilised and reused – 'a sustainable and cost-saving approach,' Professor Staib emphasises.
Hospitals have to join the trend if they want to stay competitive
Professor Staib is looking forward to a new feature that Asensus will be launching in 2022: articulated 5 mm instruments were developed to facilitate complicated surgeries
Particularly the thoracic surgeons are looking forward to these new instruments as they are the Senhance robot trail blazers
'There is no lung surgeon worldwide who could help our team with these specific thoracic surgeries,' Professor Staib says and adds that 'in the lungs region
large blood vessels have to be dealt with hyper-carefully which is a challenge for every thoracic surgeon
Small articulated instruments might offer real help.'
Patient feedback to the new technology in Esslingen has been overwhelmingly positive
many patients specifically choose the hospital to receive robot-assisted surgery
'Robots are the systems of the future,' Professor Staib says and adds that 'hospitals have to join the trend if they want to stay competitive.' (SB)
Imitation learning could open a new frontier in medical robotics: Researchers 'taught' a robot to mimic a surgical procedure by watching the surgeons' performance
Breast cancer patients benefit from perfectly personalised diagnostics and therapies

the City of Sheboygan and Esslingen will celebrate the 50th Anniversary as Sister Cities at a banquet in Esslingen
A delegation of 34 persons have traveled to Germany with Fire Chief Mike Romas and I to participate in this event
Included in this delegation are members of the Mayors International Committee
People to People and residents of the Sheboygan area
A recent publication to commemorate the anniversary was organized by Geri Schwoerer of the Mayor’s International Committee with the assistance of the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center and noted the beginnings of this partnership
The sister city relationship between Sheboygan and Esslingen began as a result of friendship which was developed many years ago between Colonel Saunders
who was stationed at the army base near Esslingen during World War II
Rues that they needed more housing for the American soldiers
“My men are so homesick for their families
I know that we could easily find housing for your men.”
and a lifetime friendship developed between the prisoner and captor
Years later Colonel Saunders was present at a Sheboygan People to People meeting where Sylvia Weber mentioned that Sheboygan should have a sister city
Esslingen was recommended by Colonel Saunders
Rues exchanged a series of letters to set up the sister city arrangement. The People to People chapter voted on January 12
to present their selection of a sister city to Sheboygan’s City Council
It was not until April of that year that the citizens of Esslingen knew anything about Sheboygan's decision to become their sister city
An article that appeared in "Esslingen Zeitung" in April 1967 revealed that the people of Esslingen were taken by surprise by the announcement of a possible Sister city
It further described Sheboygan and how the previously unknown Sheboygan wanted to be – why
we don’t know yet – Esslingen’s sister city
Ohlsen at the annual meeting of the District Youth Council was met with surprise
Esslingen will first react with wonder at suddenly having an American sister city
the City of Sheboygan Common Council recognized and endorsed the Sister City partnership with Esslingen
This was done with the hope that it would lead to a lasting friendship between the people of Esslingen am Neckar
I am the ninth Sheboygan Mayor to preserve and participate in this partnership with our colleagues in Esslingen City government
During this time many young students have enjoyed and learned from the visits to our cities
The exchange students have made new lifelong friendships and their families have adopted the student and family of their partners
many individuals have had the privileged responsibility of keeping this relationship strong and meaningful
I extend a special “thanks” to the City Councils
city staff and local families who participated in the student exchanges
all have helped nurture and strengthen this very special relationship with our friends in Esslingen
We are celebrating this anniversary because of all these efforts over the years

According to legend, the devil requested an apple from a woman at Esslingen’s market. Instead of an apple, the woman provided the devil with an onion. The devil tasted the “fake” apple and screamed: “These are your apples! That’s ridiculous. This is an onion, a spicy onion. And that is why from now on you will be called ‘onions’ instead of Esslinger."
According to the story, the devil left Esslingen and never returned.
To mirror Esslingen's event, The Mayor’s International Committee will host Esslingen Fest, in Sheboygan from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18, at 3 Sheeps Brewing Company, 1837 North Ave., Sheboygan.
Johnsonville Sausage and 3 Sheeps Brewing Company are sponsors of this inaugural event, which will feature craft beer, German food, onion specialties, music and raffles.
The Mayor’s International Committee members act as representatives at public events that honor visitors from sister cities and other foreign visitors. Each year, the committee hosts a variety of events for the foreign exchange students visiting the city.
The city will celebrate 50 years of its sister city relationship with Esslingen and Neckar, Germany, in 2017.

At a specialist event, Esslingen Municipal Transportation Authority (SVE) presented its new battery trolleybuses with In-Motion-Charging (IMC) from Vossloh Kiepe to an international trade audience and representatives of the media
The four electric hybrid buses ordered by SVE from consortium partners Vossloh Kiepe and Solaris Bus & Coach S.A
have been on regular line service since late 2016
A combination of expert presentations and a test ride left visitors to the event with a comprehensive impression of Esslingen’s electric buses
The IMC articulated buses are equipped with lithium titanate (LTO) traction batteries which
with 37 kWh of usable energy and an output of 240 kW
enable normal operation on sections of the route with no overhead contact lines
the buses have an operating range of ten kilometers in battery mode
This was one of the main reasons why Esslingen opted for this technology: “On our 113 route the electric hybrid buses cover two-thirds of the distance on battery power
This enabled us to bring the Berkheim district into our zero-emission mass transit network with no additional infrastructure costs
Ever since they entered service these vehicles have been as reliable as diesel-engined buses,” said a delighted Harald Boog
“As the main challenges in IMC buses are not so much mechanical as in the electrics
electrical system specialist Vossloh Kiepe lead managed the consortium,” he added
Visitors showed strong interest in the vehicles’ performance data
The battery trolleybuses have a top speed of 65 km/h in both operating modes
With their dual axle drive with 160 kW available at each powered axle
the buses offer outstanding performance even on gradients and in difficult weather conditions
“The key to our success was the development of a new
This cleared the way to topping up the battery fast on the short stretches with overhead lines,” explained Vossloh Kiepe project manager Joachim Berndt
If necessary the buses can draw on up to 600 kW while hooked up to the overhead lines
“The IMC concept means that it takes only short sections with overhead lines to reliably eliminate the risk of a recharging bottleneck,” said Erik Lenz
the trade visitors were able to gain a first-hand impression of the vehicle’s performance during a test run on regular routes in Esslingen
The bus’s powerful acceleration in battery mode was demonstrated on an uphill stretch
The slight difference between battery power and the stretches under the overhead lines was generally not noticeable
Against the backdrop of current demands for public transportation operators to make a substantial contribution to protecting the environment
with the IMC concept the electrical systems specialists at Vossloh Kiepe offer a practical and sustainable approach
IMC permits fleet operators to run any number of electric buses reliably
leading to measurable improvements in air quality in urban environments around the world
an uncomplicated electric bus system has been implemented that enables the buses to be operated round the clock without a break
presenting a future-oriented approach that many public transportation authorities could adopt in many different places
Germany — The celebrated Stuttgart Christmas Market that was slated to open on Wednesday has been canceled as authorities grapple with a fast-rising number of coronavirus cases in the region
We tried everything to make the Christmas market possible,” said Stuttgart Mayor Frank Nopper in a statement Monday
Nopper said the decision to shut down the Stuttgart market
was unavoidable after surrounding towns elected to cancel their markets
the nearby cities of Ludwigsburg and Esslingen
home to a very popular medieval-style Christmas market
That meant “pulling the emergency brake” in Stuttgart
“After the cancellation of the markets in Ludwigsburg and Esslingen
an enormous number of visitors would inevitably be in Stuttgart
This would no longer be controllable and manageable under corona conditions,” Nopper said
coronavirus rates have soared over the past month
the number of new cases now stands at 386.5 per 100,000 people in the country
the seven-day incidence rate is 454 new cases per 100,000

In areas where the seven-day average infection rate is more than 1,000 per 100,000 people
cultural facilities and sports venues must close
German Health Minister Jens Spahn warned Monday that in a matter of months Germans will be “vaccinated

Tuesday 5th May marked the official opening of the new Bauer production facility at the company headquarters in Esslingen
as well as the Lord Mayor of Esslingen and CEO of Altra Industrial Motion
Guests heard how the facility will act as the flagship for Bauer's new production concept
which increases the flexibility of the company's ability to deliver engineered solutions for all applications on extremely short lead times
Bauer Gear Motor has been a leading manufacturer and supplier of gear motors since 1927
first began eliminating the transmission shaft from machine tools and production machinery
Since then it has developed a reputation for producing reliable solutions which are carefully engineered to the requirements of the customer to ensure that the maximum possible efficiency gains are achieved
Bauer has never stopped pushing the boundaries of its product both in terms of technology and manufacturing techniques
Its acquisition by Altra Industrial Motion in 2011 allowed it to expand its global footprint and make investments to advance its engineering facilities and create an integrated
lean manufacturing process which keeps delivery times low
explains: "This new facility represents the next step in Bauer's production concept
which will eventually expand to our key regions around the world
We have adapted our production facilities to operate as one piece flow
This prepares us for fast delivery of both small and large customer orders
"We have been able to create a connected factory concept whereby our production facilities in Germany are supported with just-in time deliveries from our production factory in Slovakia
With this concept we are prepared for implementing Industry 4.0
"This means that the two sites are operating on the same production schedule
so there is no delay in the delivery process between customer sign-off of the order and the completion of the order
This will allow us to reduce our current standard production time for configurable gear motors from 10 days to 5 days."
adds: "As a business we believe that growth comes from investment
Bauer Gear Motor offers our customers the most reliable
efficient Gear Motor solution whether they need a batch run of standard products or a specialised solution e.g
Our investment will allow it to continue to improve our flexibility: to work more closely with customers
to reduce lead times and to grow the customer base around the world
"We are committed to supporting the continued growth of Bauer both in Germany and around the world
We intend to continue investing in the Slovakian factory and have plans to extend the new production concept to our facilities in the USA
The new facilities in the meantime are wholly owned by Bauer Gear Motor GmbH and cover an area of approximately 30,000m2 in Esslingen
In addition to the new production facilities
the new building includes open plan offices
a state-of-the-art conference centre and new canteen area with its own kitchen for the staff
The implementation of energy efficiency measures means that energy requirements on-site will be reduced by 30%
explains why the new building is not just good for Bauer and its customer base
but also for the town: "Bauer Gear Motor is a part of this town's industrial heritage
Its 230 jobs typify Esslingen as an industrial location
showing the strength of the regional economy
Bauer is showing its commitment to the town and its people
which bolsters the strength of our regional economy." Bauer sees the development in 'Lean' as an opportunity to work more closely with its customers and become a part of their value chain - working in time with their production schedule to eliminate the need to hold product in stock
The company would welcome its customers to visit the new facilities to learn more about how the new production concept can help them to grow their business and improve their processes

High-profile Dutch firm MVRDV has unveiled its design for an eye-catching new office building in Germany
the building will sport a large hole in it that will serve as a public space
and will feature both photovoltaic cells and QR codes integrated into its facade
the Milestone will be located in Esslingen am Neckar
It will rise to 12 stories and comprise 6,500 sq m (69,965 sq ft) of floorspace
The big chunk missing from it will host stairs
the building will include a bar and restaurant
The Milestone's part-mirrored, part-transparent facade will be made from fritted glass
It will also have both photovoltaic cells for electricity production and QR codes integrated
the QR codes will provide information on the town's history
people and landscape – the idea is that it'll be a kind of interactive library
MVRDV was commissioned to design the Milestone by investors RVI and construction is due to begin in 2020
The firm hopes for the building to become a new local landmark for the town
a position currently occupied by an unfortunately-named chimney

The construction of Cellcentric's fuel cell factory in Weilheim/Teck has been significantly delayed
Cellcentric intends to meet the deadline for the start of production - with the help of another location
In January, the German town of Weilheim an der Teck had reached an agreement with the last remaining landowner of the central areas, more than a year and a half after the referendum that gave the green light for the new industrial estate. As a result, the negotiations with Cellcentric were to be “finalised” so that the first work could begin in autumn 2024
The excavators were originally due to start rolling in 2023
The FC joint venture founded by Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group has now also confirmed that it is lagging behind the original plan
“Due to the delayed purchase of the land
we are one and a half years behind the original schedule with the construction of our air conditioning plant,” Cellcentric CEO Matthias Jurytko told Automobilwoche
Despite the delay – the final construction phase is now not due to be completed until 2031 – Jurytko remains committed to the location
“We chose Weilheim because the expertise for fuel cells is concentrated in south-west Germany,” said Jurytko
The original plan was for fuel cell systems for heavy commercial vehicles to be built in Weilheim from the beginning of 2026 – initially for the two shareholders and later also for third-party customers
Jurytko now told “Automobilwoche” that the plan for the first delivery should be met in 2027/2028
the first systems are not to come from Weilheim
Cellcentric has a building there that was actually only designed for small series production
“We will expand capacity here accordingly until we can move to the new factory,” says Jurytko
“we will manage the production start-up and the planned quantities by 2030”
The CEO did not say how much the unplanned expansion of the Esslingen site will cost in parallel to the actual factory construction in Weilheim or what will happen to the facilities in Esslingen once the Weilheim factory is completed
Cellcentric took over the building in Esslingen and many of the current 350 employees from Daimler AG
The fuel cell expertise was initially spread across the various divisions of Daimler AG
was later concentrated in commercial vehicles and then transferred to the Cellcentric joint venture – critics would rather use the term “outsourced”
Since the split of Daimler AG into the Mercedes-Benz Group (passenger cars and vans) and Daimler Truck with its trucks and buses
the passenger car division has virtually lost access to its former fuel cell developments
Daimler Truck intends to hand over the first test vehicles of a fuel cell truck to customers for practical tests from the middle of this year
after the vehicles have already completed many test kilometres on public roads
The series production model is planned for the second half of the decade – and will then rely on sufficient fuel cell systems from Cellcentric
the two joint venture partners are pursuing different approaches: The Volvo Group favours conventional hydrogen
hydrogen stored in gaseous form under 350 bar pressure
favours liquid hydrogen cooled to -253 degrees Celsius
as this has a higher energy density and therefore enables longer ranges

It is early December and darkness is looming though it is not even late evening

It feels like I’ve stepped back in time: All around are people dressed in medieval clothes
playing wooden instruments and selling medieval food
The Mittelaltermarkt or Medieval Christmas Market in Esslingen am Neckar
about 30 minutes southwest of Stuttgart in Germany
At the heart of Esslingen are the fort walls with a massive watch tower and a bridge that leads to the market square where the medieval Christmas Market is held alongside a regular Christmas market every year
These are surrounded by the town’s other landmarks: four medieval churches over 200 half-timbered houses
While the rest of the market has bright beautiful lights
oil lamps and charcoal fires in keeping with the theme
an archery stall encourages people to try their hand at shooting
I am drawn by a cauldron bubbling away with red mulled wine where I get mug full of the potion
just the thing for the chill that hangs in the air
a kind of pizza made with corn and topped with onions
while conversations flow and the tempo of the music gradually rises
it is the event of the year and I can detect several languages apart from German.
While the whole world has embraced the concept of the Christmas market
Its exact beginnings are hazy but there is general consensus that they were born sometime in the 15th century when German territories covered a large part of Europe
One estimate says Germany holds around 2500-3000 holiday markets across the country
and each city has something unique to recommend its own version

I get a paper packet full of hot roasted chestnuts
compelled by their seductive aroma and wander the rows of shops strung with pretty lights

An array of eclectic things are on offer: wooden
I am more attracted to stalls selling mulled wine
German sausages and flammkuchen (a kind of thin-crust pizza)
An open air stage is taken up by a local band that is belting out lively songs and has the crowds swaying and stamping their feet
I join them in a shouting a raucous version of Jingle Bells
the city’s bright and cheery Christmas market wraps itself around a set of equally spectacular monuments: Renaissance-style 14th century Altes Schloss (old castle)
the 18th century baroque Neues Schloss (new castle) and the Stiftskirche (collegiate church) which goes back almost 800 years
They are elaborately made up with the nativity scene being a leitmotif
windmills and white winter provided stiff competition
A ferris wheel with bauble-shaped capsules in bright colours is a hit with children
but I am utterly fascinated by an elaborate toy-train set up that occupies several square metres with several kinds of trains plying on multiple tracks across various miniature landscapes.
Where Stuttgart is happy with tradition and sense of charm
The main one sits in the imposing shadow of the Kolner Dom or Cologne Cathedral
the 13th century Gothic structure that towers into the sky
The Weihnachtsmarkt am Kolner Dom or the Christmas Market at the Cologne Cathedral is a series of over 150 stalls with hip handicrafts and regional culinary delicacies

I manage a quick peek at two other markets
The Kolner Alstadt Heimat der Heinzel at Heumarkt is overrun by hundreds of elves
while Kolner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Cologne Harbour Christmas Market)
located on the banks of the Rhine against the backdrop of the mid-19th century Malakoff Tower
