While the tom may not roost in this area, he’s likely to spend time here recharging when the demand for his breeding services wanes. If he’s still preoccupied with the ladies, understand that they too are just as likely to frequent these same areas for an evening meal before bed and drag him along into shotgun range the mature longbeard I killed that day never broke strut or made a peep his evening runway and pre-flight staging areas are fair game I make note of these spots when I’m lucky enough to witness the evening fly-up or try to predict them from satellite imagery of known roosting sites A henned-up or hunter-savvy old tom may shy away from calling only to succumb to a well-executed ambush strategy here When in doubt, just wait him out, even if he fails to show before roosting. Sometimes the evening success strategy involves using the lonely, impending darkness to hash out a plan for the following morning. You may not have a turkey, but you’ve dropped a reliable pin for tomorrow’s rematch. Along with an additional 57.5 GW of solar state models suggest an additional 15.7 GW of four hour lithium ion batteries and 19.5 GW of eight hour lithium ion batteries Additional pumped hydro and long duration energy storage are also considered in the models the volumes projected for now are low does not release data on the amount of hours that these systems would output one can roughly estimate the hours based upon state standards The state has installed 154,155 total energy storage systems as of April 15th just over 98% are residential systems totaling 1.076 GW of output capacity while 175 are directly grid connected utility scale facilities For the residential and commercial systems the general industry standard is to install from two to four hours of storage capacity behind the output capacity If we estimate an average of three hours per output megawatt then 4.951 GWh of storage may be available behind these units most utility scale batteries are four hours – suggesting the state’s 8.736 GW of out capacity has 34.944 GWh of storage behind them 39,895 GWh of energy storage was connected to the grid as of a couple of weeks ago More significant than the capacity value though In 2019, California knew it had a challenge: fossils were retiring & evening peak periods were power failure prone The state saw a need for <4.7 GW of power to handle these periods by 2022 and so implemented plans to deploy energy storage plus additional solar to fill up these batteries we’ve seen batteries do exactly what they were design to do – take over the evening peak periods utility scale batteries were outputting over 6.5 GW of power – the largest source of electricity by far There were multiple hours when the batteries were the largest source as well An additional 8 GW of energy storage is expected to be deployed in the next year More articles from John Fitzgerald Weaver Could you explain the difference between a four hour lithium ion battery and an eight hour lithium ion battery Only difference is more battery cells (2X more in the case of 4 hr vs 8 hr) behind the same sized inverters Other than additional containers holding battery cells You could also run an inverter at a 50% lower output amount to effectively get 8 hours of use out of a battery “4 hour battery” – but when we’re talking utility scale the interconnection is usually chosen and maximized because there’s lots of cost/value/risk associated with picking the right grid size connection Why can’t the state publish WattHours figures instead of just Watts Please be mindful of our community standards and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" By submitting this form you agree to pv magazine using your data for the purposes of publishing your comment Your personal data will only be disclosed or otherwise transmitted to third parties for the purposes of spam filtering or if this is necessary for technical maintenance of the website Any other transfer to third parties will not take place unless this is justified on the basis of applicable data protection regulations or if pv magazine is legally obliged to do so You may revoke this consent at any time with effect for the future in which case your personal data will be deleted immediately your data will be deleted if pv magazine has processed your request or the purpose of data storage is fulfilled Further information on data privacy can be found in our Data Protection Policy pv magazine USA offers daily updates of the latest photovoltaics news We also offer comprehensive global coverage of the most important solar markets worldwide up to date information delivered straight to your inbox Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value" Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_3" ).setAttribute( "value" Welcome to pv magazine USA. Most had 32 whistles. The sound will be forever associated with the circus. Leyendecker masterfully captures the tension between the muscular strength of the horse and the delicate balancing act of the rider. The horse reflects the astonishing colors of the circus around him. Maurice Bower offers another view of circus horses and riders. Horses were a favorite subject of Bower’s; he painted numerous covers featuring them pulling stagecoaches, sulkies, and firetrucks. Stevan Dohanos showed that circuses meant palate-tickling excitement to cows too. Poster paste — a succulent mixture of flour and water, and copper sulphate to keep it from souring — seems to be the bovine equivalent of a dry martini. The two Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey bill posters, Bill Feigley and Bob Aikens, who consented to pose for Dohanos, kept a wary eye on horned kibitzers while covering previous circus posters with their own particular brand. Such great covers, all of them. I’m very glad that the circus is evolving and all animals still used in acts will be treated with respect and dignity! I’ll have to keep my eye out for the little black and white dog on Leyendecker’s covers. Hopefully it was his own dog! The older dog on Norman Rockwell’s 1923 absolutely maintained his dignity, despite the absurdity of the costume—-no question about it. I wish dogs on magazine covers had not gradually disappeared after World War II. Please keep the animal covers ‘alive’ on this site and in the magazine, as you have over the past few years. She describe it, simply, as “a conversation between two fabrics that are apparently in contradiction.” An exploration of plain cotton, on the one hand, and of the sober but incredibly gorgeous properties of moire fabric on the other, most of it filtered through a deft reinterpretation of Christian Dior’s 1950s silhouettes. Chiuri had come across a dove-gray moire dress named Cigalle, in Christian Dior’s ‘Profile’ collection of 1953. It had a geometric, jutting-hip cut that fascinated her as much as the fabric. “It refers to 18th century court dress, but it’s also ergonomic, like the cars and planes of his time, that he was interested in.” She took the cut forward and spun it away from heavy corseting to make it wearable for today. Starting the show, there was her other idea: plain, restrained beige cotton, which began with trench-coat-like hybrids but soon began to take shape as ’50s-influenced dresses with small waists and draped bodices. It’s easy to imagine the immediate clamor for these dresses and suits for the awards season—and how moire will soon trickle out from this show as a fashion-wide influence. Chiuri had more options, from pretty flower-strewn embroidered spring dresses to plissé silk columns as simple as t-shirts to graceful capes. Really, she has it covered for women of all ages and shapes when it comes to the tricky challenges of dressing up—if they have the money, of course. That’s the insight that’s making the house of Christian Dior such a success. Chabad of Georgetown recently hosted an unforgettable evening dinner in honor of Chof Beis Shvat This elegant affair was dedicated to celebrating the legacy of the Rebbetzin and honoring the and Irish legal systems framed for a crime he did not commit – and wrongfully sentenced to death The case followed a dramatic series of events the death of two police officers and a run-away criminal Intense media scrutiny placed pressure on the police to find the killer of the police officers and close the case after being brutally interrogated for hours on end in police custody with one interview session lasting over 20 hours He was subsequently found guilty on the basis of doctored evidence in a court designed for the charging of suspects in political crimes Peter was forcibly transferred to a maximum security prison in the company of two jailors at all times with no toilet and no light in his cell Filled with rage and hopelessness after failed appeals – Peter felt powerless Yet he refused his lawyer’s idea to plea for clemency as he would have rather been hung an innocent man then plead guilty to a crime he did not commit Peter was finally exonerated and acquitted of the crime for which he had been convicted after winning his freedom a new challenge dawned – the prospect of reintegrating into society He could not understand the world he re-entered Sunny Jacobs had also been wrongfully incarcerated for the killing of two police officers She was sentenced to death at the age of 27 daughter and wife who had her whole life ahead of her who was running for District Attorney at the time threatened a witness to commit perjury in order to convict Sunny of a crime she clearly had not committed that same witness took the stand to testify against the DA but in fear had a heart attack on the stand – and her testimony was disregarded because of her previous record of drug use the judge had not dismissed that same witness’ statement despite her drug use at the time of Sunny’s first trial After a few years as the only woman on death row at that time in the US her sentence was changed to life imprisonment This meant she was free from solitary confinement able to finally interact with people – so much so that she was almost happy Sunny knew no other emotions for the duration of her seventeen years in prison She attempted to make her time bearable by practicing yoga and engaging in ‘spiritual’ activities her daughter’s attempted suicide and the refusal of her children’s foster parents to facilitate visits by her children to see her in prison – Sunny had begun to lose hope she advocated against the death penalty but what she learnt was that it made her feel like a victim Sunny and Peter both believe that individuals bring change and the couple have now set up the Sunny Centre Foundation in Ireland physical and emotional rehabilitation and support for those who have been wrongfully incarcerated There is a misconception that exonerees are compensated after leaving prison however in reality the system does not operate as such you not only are perceived but also feel unhuman – and new challenges await the newly exonerated as they try to rebuild lives shattered by the state We have already reviewed the Afternoon 20"-wheeled folder from French company Eovolt. We now turn our attention to the largest model in the range, a 24"-wheeled compact model, the Eovolt Evening (there is also a 16"- wheeled model the Evening features a seatpost battery design with the battery cells housed in the seatpost itself You can see a few similar designs on other folding e-bikes from other manufacturers though none do a 24"-wheeled compact version Not only is the Evening a unique offering (as far as we are aware) it also has the trademark hand-polished welds on a lovely smooth frame that comes in a nice range of cool pastel colours the sloping downtube of the step-through design giving really easy access whilst getting on and off sturdy kickstand and powerful front and rear lights also add to the impression of a cool-looking and very well-made e-bike non-folding Evening (without suspension) aimed at with the larger (and much larger volume) tyres giving even more comfort than the 20"-wheeled Afternoon in combination with there being more room to fit bigger panniers at the back make the Evening virtually a mini-town e-bike that can legitimately claim to be in the same territory as much larger step-through Dutch style e-bikes the smaller wheels won't have quite the same stability as the ubiquitous larger wheels on classic Dutch designs but they certainly don't feel at all twitchy and the high volume tyres are just wonderful for rolling over fairly large potholes and venturing off-road onto even rougher railpaths and the like than the Afternoon would feel comfortable on I described the Afternoon as having a smooth and comfortable ride and the larger 24" wheels on the Evening give an even plusher and more stable experience Those big volume CST 24 x 2.4" (61-507mm) tyres really do their job The solid frame and handlepost hinge joints had virtually no flex whilst riding and so the overall effect was one of comfort and stability but also of an e-bike you could ride in a sporty fashion if you wanted by standing out of the saddle and pulling on the bars the pedal crank movement sensing system was nice and responsive The hill climbing ability of the geared rear hub motor was pretty good too posting a time of just under three minutes up our extended hill climb It made it up our ultra-steep mini-climb too - quite a lot slower than mid-drive machines but this is a hill that has defeated quite a number of underpowered and overgreared hub-motored machines over the years which again also distinguishes it from at least some of the lower-priced competition Cheaper models may feature mechanical disc brakes of some kind not the very nicely performing Nutt hydraulics found on the Evening The wheels are built by Eovolt themselves in the Lyon factory as part of a process that is seeing the firm progressively bring more and more elements of manufacturing under their own control. Further features that mark out the Eovolt from other budget machines are the super smooth welds already noted and internally routed brake and gear cables Indeed the Eovolt Evening is pretty much in a category of it's own. Other compacts tend to use smaller 20" wheels and also to be pricier mid-drives. Witness the Cube Compact, Orbea Katu-e and Riese and Muller Tinker ranges - though the Katu-e's £2,199 start price certainly looks tempting they all lack that lovely low step-over height of the Evening and the off-road ability and comfort of the those bigger wheels All in all the Evening is a very practical and versatile e-bike that has plenty of good looks too eovolt.co.uk Richard Peace took to full-time outdoor writing/photojournalism after stints in an office and as an English teacher abroad.
