Arts and ArchitectureArt education faculty member takes arts and cultural advocacy efforts to KosovoCommunity members view the immersive installation at Fellbach-Haus Center for Creative Education in Suhareka
The installation was facilitated by Arts Action Group
— What does arts and cultural advocacy look like in a context of community development and social transformation
What is the role of arts and culture in the context of oppression or rebuilding after war
Those are questions that Penn State Art Education faculty member Ann Holt explores through the facilitation of community arts workshops in Suhareka/Theranda
Holt has visited Suhareka — a region where arts and culture are seen as critical to community development — in 2017
she spent 10 days in the southeastern European municipality
continuing a collaboration with AAG partner Refki Gollopeni
an artist and administrator at Fellbach-Haus Center for Creative Education
AAG is an international collective of arts educators
artist-teachers and educators committed to facilitating socially engaged arts and education initiatives with children and youth in conflict-affected environments
Members of the group were introduced to Gollopeni and the dynamic community at Fellbach-Haus in 2009
“While the beginning of the collaboration was about arts and healing and entrepreneurial rebuilding
the relationship has become more geared toward STEAM
and looking at ways that arts and culture can help to bring up the economic well-being of the country,” explained Holt
who holds a doctorate in art education from Penn State
Kosovo is still recovering from the 1998-99 war
including ethnic cleansing that marked the end of the fall of Yugoslavia
It is estimated that more than 80% of the houses and buildings were destroyed by Serb forces and more than half the population of surviving ethnic Albanians were internally displaced or made refugees during the two-year-long conflict
launched by the former Serbian president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
which resulted in Milošević being charged as a war criminal
despite its declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008
China and Serbia do not recognize Kosovar sovereignty
all G7 and most European Union countries do
“It’s an interesting kind of context to be thinking about arts and culture,” Holt said
“But Kosovo has always had a very rich cultural and artistic heritage
Animation has long been a part of their cultural output.”
The theme of the 2024 collaboration with Fellbach-Haus was “Imagining Place: Mapping New Worlds,” and resulted in an immersive installation — created by children and youth at the community center and students studying robotics — featuring high- and low-tech kinetic drawing machines
animations and large-scale video projections with audio linked to the theme
It also featured an entire range of handcrafted
With assistance from Penn State maps specialist Heather Ross
Holt was able to bring a digital topographical map and print analog maps of the region to use for creative inspiration
While AAG members make plans with Gollopeni and the youth prior to arriving in Suhareka
the art projects evolve organically once they are on-site
“This year we surpassed what we usually accomplish in a week because we set out to do an installation and it became super-immersive,” Holt said
“There was so much artwork going on that we could not keep track of all of it
Goals this year included working with other local educators — they collaborated with an art teacher and a robotics teacher — and facilitating more dialogue among participants
“Some of this is about creating more spaces so that we can have more time for dialogue
and more time not only working with the students
so we [educators] can stop and just sit at a table
that is part of how we operate in the sense that we embrace not knowing
It lends itself that way because it’s not us making all the decisions.”
Every year AAG members invite volunteers to join them in Suhareka
including international colleagues and former students
a Penn State English faculty member who was born in Albania
accompanied Holt to Suhareka in March to explore ways the project could incorporate partners from other disciplines
Holt met Darragjati when Gollopeni visited the United States in fall 2023
where he presented his arts advocacy work and experiences in context to war and rebuilding to Holt’s grad students enrolled in "Art Education 524: Arts Education
and we need to consider projects that allow for more collaboration,” said Darragjati
they were almost like family after working with them for a few days
You want to do what you can to help them.”
Helping the kids — by using the arts to show what they are capable of — is AAG’s primary mission
AAG collaborates with local partners engaged in the arts with children and youth to foster capabilities associated with the arts — from creative expression and reflection to big-picture thinking
“It’s not one of those things where you just go and don’t go back,” Holt said
“The relational component is key to making it work
Language may get in the way but when you know each other
language does not truly get in the way— there are workarounds
According to Holt, the challenges mainly lie in supporting the work of AAG and its partners in meaningful ways. AAG members self-fund where they go, participating in fundraising efforts when possible. This year AAG was partially supported by the Suhareka municipality with additional funding from ProfVal, a company building bridges for international academics and professionals who seek to contribute their expertise in the United States
Holt said she is exploring the possibility of developing a Penn State study abroad program or immersive experience where she takes students to Kosovo to engage in international community-based arts and cultural education work
Reflecting on her experiences in Suhareka over the years
Holt said it’s inspiring to see how engaged the students are and what they accomplish in one week
The workshops culminate in a public exhibition and celebration attended by participants and their families
A celebratory dinner features local singers performing traditional Albanian songs
“These trips are always successful,” she said
“We are creating the conditions for relationships to happen outside this program — it’s the beginning of lifelong friendships.”

It was early March and the eye-catching asparagus was already on prominent display at my local grocery store
which was a surprise to me and an elderly lady standing nearby
she said in an excited pitch that quickly turned to disappointment
She walked off empty-handed after closer inspection revealed the bright green stalks were from Spain rather than Germany
“Spargelzeit,” the much-anticipated time of year when the asparagus starts to sprout
only really counts when it’s grown locally
With the lady’s disappointment still fresh in my mind
I decided to seize the spargel moment now that the season is in gear
a farm restaurant in the town of Fellbach that’s held in high regard for the quality of its stalks
has been on my list of places to visit for years
with the asparagus grown on site along with a wide range of other produce
When they launched their annual asparagus menu on March 26
my family made a reservation just a few days later
we were brought a small serving of asparagus broth to get our palates warmed up
includes many dishes with white and green stalks served in different ways
Typical options include 500 grams (about a pound) of asparagus served in hollandaise sauce
I ordered the green served with a side of smoked salmon
Another in our party opted for the white asparagus with hollandaise and a crispy schnitzel
Several meals offering asparagus with crepes or meat offerings were in the 20 euro range
The white and green asparagus all were cooked to perfection
And the flavor beats any import likely to be found at the local commissary
where it seems like asparagus is available year round and not particularly popular
That tendency to eat in season adds to the experience of Bauerle
which has an appealing modern atmosphere indoors that contrasts with the farm setting
the farm’s restaurant turns to a beef-oriented menu in August and a goose-focused one in the fall
I made a return trip for a little more Spargelzeit — this time at the produce stand for takeout
SOUTH BEND — The Studebaker National Museum presents “The Birth of the Silver Arrows: Mercedes-Benz Racing” at 1:30 p.m
The racing cars of Mercedes-Benz have been known as the “Silver Arrows” (Silberpfeile) since the 1930s in the years immediately preceding the Second World War
Along with the racing cars of the Auto Union company
the silvery-liveried German machines of the two companies dominated Grand Prix racing from 1934 to 1939
Back home again: Studebaker National Museum purchases race car built for the Indy 500
After World War II, Mercedes-Benz once again returned to racing with a new generation of Silver Arrows in 1954 and 1955. In recent years, the Mercedes Formula 1 team has won six world championships in a row
also using a livery that is basically silver
But how and why the Silver Arrows of the 1930s came into being has often been attributed to an incident that occurred during the weigh-in for the Eifelrennen (Eifel Race) at the Nűrburgring in June 1934
For many years, the account given by the manager of the Mercedes-Benz racing team, Alfred Neubauer
was accepted at face value and repeated in books and magazines
In recent years, some have challenged this account, and the Mercedes-Benz Heritage Information Center held a symposium in July 2007 at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Fellbach
will take the audience through this fascinating story and explore whether or not there is truth in the famous story or there is more to the story than meets the eye

Saastal’s Alpine charm is just as strong when the weather warms
This valley is located in the Swiss canton of Valais and home to four villages; all wood and gabled roofs
Make this car-free resort your base to explore this cinematic corner of the Alps this summer — here's how
The Saas Valley is set sky-high among Alpine giants. The valley is surrounded by 18 summits above 13,000ft — including Dom, Switzerland’s highest — and visitors can take them all in on the cable car ride to the Hohsaas viewpoint
a dedicated circular trail departs from the cable station
with knockout vistas and information boards on the mountains along the way
where you can put your feet up on a sun terrace
while the Hohsaas Bike Trail hightails it back to the villages with glimpses of mountain streams and larch forests
the icy expanse between the Dom and Allalinhorn summits can be explored with crampons in summer; negotiate its seracs and crevasses with the help of a guide
The five-mile circular trail around this earth dam — Europe’s largest — is gentle enough for families and offers views all the way to the Allalin and Schwarzberg glaciers
is the starting point for a more challenging 18-mile loop up old smuggler routes; Monte Moro Pass
grazes the border with Italy and opens up to views of Monte Rosa
the Fellbach Falls are never more spectacular than in summer
Come as the weather warms for the full crash-bang spectacle
watching this 130ft cascade tumble over a wooded cliff face in wispy plumes
stop for a picnic at the nearby village of Saas-Balen
which charms with rustic sights: there are cow-nibbled pastures
dark timber huts and a 19th-century round church that’s unique in the country
trails wind for miles to tiny hamlets and some of Europe’s highest mountain pastures
where the silence is broken only by chiming cowbells
then go higher still with the Metro Alpin underground funicular
Make sure to wrap up warm: this viewpoint has an ethereally lit ice cave
sculpted directly from the belly of the Fee Glacier
pros can be spotted training in Saastal's summer ski area

Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel left their home town of Fellbach
they would make their careers as socially conscious photographers
creating beautiful and heartbreaking images of America’s working classes
Leaving Baltimore for California in 1930
they braved the harsh realities of the Great Depression
worked as migrant farm laborers and documented all of these experiences with a second-hand Rolleiflex camera
Mieth and Hagel began their long careers with images of poverty and harsh work conditions on California’s farms
many of which are currently on display at the Sonoma County Museum in LIFE
and Purpose: The Photography of Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel
the largest exhibition of their work ever shown in the United States
The collection blends the heaviness of Dorothea Lange’s iconic Depression-era work with the energy of late night strike meetings
Cotton picker families offer emotional glimpses into California’s historical struggles; a stark contrast to today’s highly developed
Mieth’s 1932 image of a shanty town (informal settlements once called “Hoovervilles”) near the Sacramento city dump is especially profound — countless men and boys dig through the trash
Mieth and Hagel also documented the San Francisco Longshoreman Strike of 1934
a time when people were so desperate for food and a day’s work that the couple had their apartment robbed
Mieth’s 1934 image Outstretched Hands relays that desperation with immediacy; it soon became an icon of the union
The couple’s work reflected the times outside of California as well
eventually leading to job offers for both at LIFE Magazine
while Hagel opted to work for the magazine on a freelance basis
Mieth’s photography rose to a new level of radicalism for the time; she documented issues like birth control
Japanese interment camps and female garment worker strikes
Although both Mieth and Hagel became known and respected for images that humanized the experiences of poor working families
their viewpoints and friends resulted in scrutiny during the McCarthy era
especially after refusing to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
The McCarthy era didn’t scare them away from social justice issues forever
One of the most powerful images in the exhibit is one of a series on the local Pomo Indians
The photograph shows a tribal burial for the leader’s son
Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel’s work captures the beauty
heartache and adventure of the immigrant experience in America
But it also pays homage to the often-unseen players who toiled on the land we inhabit today
And though the exhibit includes glimpses of their personal lives and circles of famed friends
it’s the nameless workers and families who leave the most meaningful impact
LIFE, Labor, and Purpose: The Photography of Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel is on view at the Sonoma County Museum through August 30, 2015. For more information visit sonomacountymuseum.org
Amelie Bachmann wasted no time getting acclimated into American lifestyle
She was hosted by the Tami and Travis Armstrong family
The Armstrongs already had a wedding to go to that next weekend in Granite Falls
the family went to the Omaha Zoo and a water park
she started volleyball practice at Blue Earth Area High School
“There are so many new things here compared to back home
I find myself sitting in class thinking about what I have going on for the rest of the day- and even week- sometimes.”
and is not used to having a full schedule all the time
She says that schools in Germany do not have as many activities
“I have never played volleyball before
but it seemed like a fun experience,” Bachmann says
“I want to get the most out of this exchange student program and do things I would not normally do in Germany.”
Back home she really enjoys dancing and belly dancing
A belly dancing club was only 10 minutes away from her home
She has been doing it for the last two years
Bachmann also plans on doing gymnastics at BEA this upcoming winter
She believes her belly dancing experience will carry over and help her grasp gymnastics
“The best part about having Amelie around is her willingness to try and do different things,” host parent Tami Armstrong says
“It is scary to put yourself out there and do something different for a change.”
The most glaring differences Bachmann says are the proportion sizes of food
quality of acting on television shows and deer roaming around freely
but there are quite a few small differences,” Bachmann says
“The first time I saw deer running across the road I seriously freaked out.”
Another difference is the recommendation as to what to do after high school graduation
jobs and corporations in Germany want older kids with life experience
“Teachers recommend to take some time off after high school graduation,” Bachmann says
“College is not a common choice for new high school graduates.”
The German native did not know what to expect coming to America
She only knew that she was very curious and excited
Bachmann did not fully commit on doing the exchange student program until late March of this year
She recalls one of her friends telling her about the exchange student program
Bachmann always was curious about life in America
“My days seemed to be so robotic,” Bachmann says
“It was the best choice I have ever made.”
Bachmann admits her English has become more fluent
Being around so many English speakers really helps her concentrate on what she is actually saying
has also loved the experience according to Bachmann
Lucia gets her bigger sister’s wardrobe while she is gone to America
“Being a Buccaneer and being a part of a high school with so much school spirit has been a great change of pace for me,” Bachmann says
The school day is two hours longer here according to Bachmann
“At first it felt like a very long day
“I really enjoy my practical software class because back home we use computers for everything and not everyone knows basic technology skills.”
In addition to being pleased with American high school life
her favorite American food by far is taco salad
She also believes that the quality of McDonald’s and Subway is second to none
“The Armstrongs have been so great and I could not have asked for a better host family,” Bachmann says
“It is never boring and there is never a quiet minute around here.”

The Fraunhofer ISE has designed a novel method for assessing the potential of low-temperature heat sources for large-scale heat pumps
The five-step process was tested on the German city of Fellbach
enabling the identification of heat sources with LCOH lower than €0.1/kWh
Image: Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE)
Researchers from Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) have proposed a novel method for assessing and comparing low-temperature heat sources for integration with industrial heat pump operations
The proposed method is based on five steps: Identifying heat sources; evaluating their heat availability and potential; approximating the cost of heat source extraction and supply; comparing the potentials and costs; and finally yielding recommendations to municipal heat planners
“All local municipal heat sources need to be assessed for their potential and availability,” the group said
“Individually assessing each heat source
and soil (surface and deep geothermal) will contribute to more informed decision-making for municipal energy planners
this paper suggests an indicator-based heat source evaluation method using open-source data.”
The first step uses open-source geographic information tools like Open-StreetMap
This information – which includes industrial sites
and river and lake areas – is collected within a geoinformation system (GIS)
the team highlights that heat sources like deep geothermal
and industrial waste heat sites may not be identifiable without detailed research
The second step includes considering all the different indicators for potential low-temperature heat sources
A total of 40 indicators are considered in technical
are used to assess the potential of the different air-based
The next step is the cost approximation one
which is based on technical potential assessment
“Each identified heat source is evaluated based on the expected investment and operating cost of thermal generation units
The required generation capacity is matched with heat demand close to the location in an area of two-by-two km2 to estimate the possible capacity sizes of heat exchangers
and other necessary generation components and allocate their cost,” the academics explained
The fourth step of the proposed method compares the results in four frameworks
The first is compression in absolute terms by heat exchanger and source
as yearly energy quantities for the specific analyzed area
The second is a relative comparison when only sources of the same geographical type are compared
The third framework compares the certainty of the heat sources based on a quantitative data quality assessment
The last proposed framework compares the heat sources by the levelized cost of heat (LCOH)
“The recommendation in step 5 is based on the previously introduced four steps of the methodology and concludes with a list of promising heat source candidates within the chosen boundaries of the study subject,” the researchers explained
“The recommendation process summarizes the results in a repeatable way for the deciding planners.”
the scientist took a case study of the German city of Fellbach
Located in the country's southwest and home to about 45,000 residents
its combined heat demand for 2022 stood at 472 GWh
and its electricity demand amounted to 193 GWh
The city primarily relies on gas and oil boilers for heat supply
the researchers have identified the river Neckar
various large industrial plants and supermarkets
and potential heat extraction areas in residential proximity as potential heat sources
Based on the technical and economic estimation of each possible source
“The case study-specific LCOH for five of the analyzed sources falls below 0.1€ (0.104$)/kWh
while the LCOH of the five soil-based heat sources exceeds 0.1€/kWh,” the results indicated
“The case study results show competitive thermal supply cost for five heat sources: Industrial waste heat
wastewater and supermarket waste heat.”
Based on LCOH compression and the other framework
the team recommended further developing a proof of concept for extracting heat from the river water
They also recommended considering the possibility of extracting heat from a near-surface geothermal close to a new housing estate
The method was presented in “Evaluating low-temperature heat sources for large-scale heat pump integration: A method using open-source data and indicators,” published in Applied Energy

Darja Varfolomeev has seen her childhood dreams come true as the 17-year-old won Germany first Olympic medal since 1984 and first German gold in history on rhythmic gymnastics
9 (Xinhua) -- Grace and perfection have been her desires since Darja Varfolomeev first stepped into a sports hall at the age of three
14 years later the Russian-born German rhythmic gymnast seems to have come near her boldest dreams
Taking the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris gave proof of her profound development in the sport she loved from the first moment
The 17-year-old dominated the all-around competition with the hoop
the clubs and the ribbon (142.850) securing the top position ahead of Bulgaria's Boryana Kaleyn (140.600) and Italy's Sofia Raffaeli (136.300)
The story behind the German success might be one of the most unusual in sports
Leaving Russia at the age of 12 without her parents
she joined the German federal Olympic training center for gymnastics in Fellbach-Schmiden near Stuttgart
"It was a tough time to go to a country I didn't know
without speaking the language," said the 2023 five-time world champion
she and her mother Tatjana applied for German passports
"I have worked my entire life to get to the Olympics
I always admired the mental strength of athletes performing perfectly under pressure," she said
adding that she loves to deliver gymnastic routines after choosing the music for her performances
Under the supervision of 42-year-old coach Julija Raskina
a Belarus-rooted silver medal winner of the 2000 Olympics
the breakthrough followed in 2023 when she won all competitions at the Valencia World Championships
but we took it easy to allow her to get used to the new environment," Raskina said
adding her athlete has been ambitious every day to gain perfection
postponed her school exams "as that can wait as we decided the Olympics comes first."
The strategy paid off in the La Chapelle Arena after months filled with 60 hours of training every week
"I am sure the school exams come early enough," Varfolomeev said with a smile running over her face
"I am so happy to have done what I always dreamed of
aside from her friends and her brother witnessed her triumphant march in Paris and tears of joy came quickly after the final score
This is the first German Olympic medal since 1984 and the first German gold in history of the sport. ■

Mercedes invested $3.2 million and seven years in the restoration of a 1975 600 Pullman limo
It was to breathe life into an outdated limo
The brand also wanted to bring the classic up to contemporary standards
DISCOVER SBX CARS: The global premium car auction platform powered by Supercar Blondie
The restoration aimed to make the limo look like a classic from the outside but perform like a modern Maybach
The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was a favorite of the wealthy of the mid-1970s
This anthracite gray metallic and blue leather example was made on the German production line
It boasted self-leveling suspension and hydraulic windows and was delivered to Lebanon in 1975
that Mercedes-Benz Classic bought it in 2007 repainted in ‘Mother of Pearl White’
Mercedes built just 2,677 units of the 600 luxury sedan – internally known as the W100 – with a short or long wheelbase and four or six doors
Only 304 of them were hand-built Pullmans and 59 had the ‘Landaulet’ tag
Daimler AG shipped to Mercedes-Benz Classic in Fellbach
There the seemingly classic luxury sedan was donated some unexpected and expensive contemporary features
It’s not cheap to procure parts for a car that’s so rare and has been out of production for decades
The owner’s brief was comfort using what the modern stretched Maybach 62 offers
The car now features an electro-transparent panoramic glass roof
shifting from clear to opaque at the touch of a button
Plus Maybach analog gauges from the 62 sedan provide speed
a button controls a power glass partition for privacy en route
The red-garnet leather seats are also borrowed from a 62 complete with electric adjustment
and cooling with automatic and ambient lighting
While spacious, it’s nowhere near the size of this 10-seater V8 Dodge Viper limo.
To raise the comfort to private-jet heights
and built-in nav on a sliding LCD TV screen integrated into the center wall
A Dolby surround audio system with Bluetooth connectivity means you won’t skip a beat
and the Becker Grand Prix AM/FM radio in the dashboard
The owner also resisted the urge to soup up the engine too much
the original 6.3-liter single-overhead cam V8 engine was rebuilt
with its four-speed automatic transmission sending 247HP through the rear wheels
the car came with only 691 miles (1,112 kilometers) on the clock
In a less elegant conversion, this Learjet was converted into a limo that cost $1m to build.
Well despite entering the luxury used car market at well below its remake cost at $2.32 million
The car went unsold in 2020 when it was originally listed – and has been relisted several times
It was previously offered for roughly $2 million (€1,844,500)
That’s been cut to $1.6 million (€1.5 million)
which doesn’t cover half the cost of the restoration cost

In an example that didn’t fare as well, these YouTubers had to get a rare 1963 Chrysler New Yorker limousine running in a matter of days.

MERCEDES’ temple to the car as a work of art is a dramatic nine-level aluminium and glass building
it houses 160 glistening cars and 1100% exhibits in 16,100% square-metres of floor space
