Aaron Forst Pledges to Support Congressional Term Limits non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials is gathering support from state lawmakers across the nation Its mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress has committed support for term limits on Congress by signing the term limits convention pledge Term Limits pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.” the Supreme Court of the United States opined that only a Constitutional Amendment could limit the terms of U.S the best chance of imposing term limits on Congress is through an Article V Proposal Convention of state legislatures “The Constitution allows for amendments to be proposed by either 2/3 of Congress or 2/3 of the states While we’d like for Congress to take the high road and propose term limits on itself we know they are too self-interested to do that without external pressure.” said Tomboulides “That is why it is important to get buy-in from state legislators,” he added the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.” “More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment Aaron knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.” According to the latest nationwide poll on term limits conducted by Pew Research “An overwhelming majority of adults (87%) favor limiting the number of terms that members of Congress are allowed to serve This includes a majority 56% who strongly favor this proposal View Forst’s signed pledge here. Forst's students didn't hesitate when given the option to stay with her online or switch to a substitute "When I told them what was going on and asked what they preferred 'Just tell us what we need to do—we want to stick with you.' The support has been overwhelming." But connection with students has always been a hallmark of Forst's teaching she's approached her work not just as a professor "I consider myself a sponsor for my students," she said "I use restorative practices to learn their strengths and challenges and I look for opportunities that allow them to sharpen those skills Our students often come to us uncertain of where they're going We need to pour into them at that moment." One moment that's stayed with her came from a student in her Constitutional Law class I turned around and taught them to my entire family and we are all citizens now.' That reminded me that this work literally changes lives And it's why I approach every course with that level of seriousness and care." Forst sees teaching as a constant evolution "Teaching has taught me that I don't know as much as I thought I knew and that being a good learner is essential to being a good teacher," she said Sometimes a student is struggling in class That's why we have to meet students where they are and walk with them." Forst earned her bachelor's degree at Bradley University a Master of Science in Criminal and Justice Studies at Grand Canyon University and her law degree at Northern Illinois University after which she amassed an impressive range of legal experiences She was a mitigation specialist in a death penalty case and disposed of more than 200 juvenile cases and later she founded her own firm and was general counsel to 20 small- to medium-size companies Forst brings together her love of law and education to guide students toward meaningful careers in criminal justice "It is the intersection which leads students to paths where they are able to reach their highest potential," she said "I want them to leave with the tools to question information and determine its validity And I hope they see that criminal justice must offer a restorative perspective to truly succeed." who have always encouraged her to be her best self She also finds deep inspiration in her students "I'm amazed by their resilience—their educational personal and professional accomplishments overwhelm me," she said "Teaching gives me a chance to learn just as much as I teach." Even with the [hamstring] injury last year and having to leave Double-A, he took it in stride, rehabbed and got back out to the Fall League The biggest question surrounding Kurtz’s imminent arrival: What position will he play? He is considered a solid defender at first base, though Tyler Soderstrom is currently manning the position for the A’s while enjoying a breakout campaign in which he is currently tied for the MLB home run lead Forst indicated that Kurtz will get the majority of playing time at first who has been getting pregame reps in the outfield over the past couple of weeks is expected to see more time in left field and at the designated hitter spot “It’s not every day you take your best hitter and ask him to move,” Forst said “Tyler has been outstanding through this whole process I think the first thing you’ll probably see is Tyler playing left field and Nick playing first base We’ve also seen Brent [Rooker] go out to left field a few times in the last couple of weeks Sign up to receive our weekly Baseball Traveler newsletter to stay updated on Minor League Baseball business and culture “The most important thing is getting all the bats in the lineup every day The fact that Tyler has been so receptive and willing to do what’s best for the team has made this an easier decision to have Nick here now.” Nick Kurtz taking BP ahead of his Major League debut tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/UHA3JTsyJN Kurtz has racked up personal accomplishments and eye-popping statistics along the way Now joining a young A’s squad with a goal of competing for the playoffs in 2025 the personal numbers are secondary for Kurtz All the personal accolades to get to this point is what I did Can we win every single day?’ That’s what I hope to bring Do something every single day to help the team win.” TISCH MILLS – Forest Inn Arts Collective soon will present a new musical The musical will be performed at the Forst Inn in Tisch Mills from March 29 to April 13 The musical reimagines Lewis Carroll’s beloved “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” in an entirely new and fresh way Season schedule: What's coming to Forst Inn in Tisch Mills in 2025? Privacy Policy Sacramento Athletics GM David Forst was asked about the first base situation given that Tyler Soderstrom is being asked to catch a little more in camp Forst made sure to set the record straight "Tyler is going to be the primary first baseman It's nice that [Seth Brown] can play there we'll know better what exactly his role is "But the way he performed last year when he was healthy he's got to be in there somewhere." especially since the A's DFA'd Kyle McCann to bring in another backup catcher with limited MLB experience Soderstrom is a very real possibility behind the dish as the backup option to Shea Langeliers Forst told reporters that the team had told him not to put away his catching gear just yet While he's not going to be the A's primary catcher having Soderstrom as the team's backup would allow him to continue to receive playing time while also adding an extra infielder or outfielder to the roster giving the club more options in certain situations as well as increased flexibility Last season as the A's backup backstop In just 39 of those he was the A's starting catcher McCann ended up with 157 plate appearances which doesn't seem like a ton of time that Soderstrom would have to make up for the A's would have a masher that they could drop in to play first base but the goal of this potential project would be to put one of the trio of Brown or Urshela in the right situations to have maximum success while also lengthening the lineup on rare days that Langeliers gets a breather If the A's decide to go with a regular backup catcher on the roster then the options would appear to be McCann who is no longer on the team's 40-man roster who is also not on the 40-man and has yet to make his MLB debut who is on the 40-man and has limited MLB experience the A's could be ready to pull the trigger on calling up former first-round pick Daniel Susac being the backup option but he has yet to play in Triple-A at this point so his arrival could have to wait until after the All-Star break at the earliest There is also the question of what happens to Soderstrom when last year's first-round selection at No The first baseman has loud tools and could zip right through the minors in 2025 6 overall selection Jacob Wilson did last year Kurtz will be the A's first baseman sooner rather than later so having a backup plan for Soderstrom in place would be ideal That backup plan may just end up being that he is the backup catcher JASON BURKEJason has been covering the A’s at various sites for over a decade, and was the original host of the Locked on A’s podcast. Last month, it was revealed that Rooker underwent surgery on a forearm extensor injury which was also cited as a reason for keeping him away from defensive duties but he is capable of providing depth at left field to add to his value the A’s haven’t always held true to stated intentions (cough cough Vegas cough) and there certainly is some unlikely offer for The Rook that I myself would probably accept but Forst’s statement sounds pretty affirmative and I’ll hold out hope for a third season of Brent Rooker with the A’s RHPs Justin Sterner & Anthony Maldonado claimed off waivers, Kyle Muller & Tyler Nevin elect free agency, Ryan Noda/Tristan Gray/Royber Salinas claimed off waivers, Austin Adams & Armando Alvarez cleared waivers/sent to LV, Daz Cameron to O’s for cash…https://t.co/joKXkyUAPy Day 1 ➔ ⚽️ Field conversion has officially started at the Coliseum! pic.twitter.com/VxSiHFBHr9 MLB Trade Rumors By | October 5 and that the A’s are hopeful of bringing back the entire coaching staff for their first season in Sacramento and the rest of the roster is still in their pre-arb years given the Athletics’ usual reluctance to spend we should probably wait and see if owner John Fisher will indeed approve even a modest payroll increase This winter in particular carries the X-factor of how the Athletics’ revenues will be impacted by the move to Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park a Triple-A stadium (home of the Giants’ top minor league affiliate) with a total capacity of just over 14,000 there are still plenty of details about the move that team officials themselves aren’t yet certain Forst believed Sutter Health Park would continue to have an artificial playing surface during the Athletics’ tenure though no renovation work has started on the field itself in preparation for 2025 The other challenge facing Forst this offseason is how exactly he’ll be able to lure desirable players to join the A’s and I’d be lying if I told you I knew what the answers will be on the other side,” Forst said While the younger talent on the roster might be attractive to free agents under normal circumstances the fact remains that many players might not have interest in joining a franchise that will be spending at least its next three seasons in a minor league ballpark It seems likely that the A’s will again be limited to signing players to one-year contracts with an eye towards flipping those players at the trade deadline if the team isn’t in contention As for the coaching staff, some turnover might develop if other teams step forward with job offers or promotions for any A’s coaches.  Slusser also suggests that the Athletics might not stand in the way if rival clubs had interest in manager Mark Kotsay which would be an interesting wrinkle to both the team’s rebuilding plans and to any possible managerial vacancies around the league Kotsay is only 179-307 over three seasons as the Athletics’ skipper though the poor record doesn’t fairly access his managerial ability given how little Kotsay has had to work with on a rebuilding roster not to mention the added tumult of the franchise’s planned move Kotsay is under contract just through the 2025 season and it is perhaps worth noting that the A’s let previous manager Bob Melvin go to the Padres when Melvin also had a year remaining on his contract “As far as the potential for losing [Kotsay] those things are out of my control right now,” Forst said “He absolutely deserves to be considered by anyone who has a managerial opening but he’s under contract here and wants to be here And there’s no one I would rather have managing this team.” Oakland Athletics With an average attendance of 11,000 it shouldn’t be such a problem to make a move to a stadium of 13,000 but if they wish to start successfully once they move to Las Vegas they should start working towards a competitive team now and increase spending That depends on whether Fisher wants to bridge an identity of the former Oakland A’s over to Las Vegas The first Las Vegas team will stand to make very good revenue due its initial buzz even with an AAAA team I suppose playing in Sacremento is better for fringe players contemplating playing in Japan and S Korea without having to learn a new culture and language then they should raise payroll to sign such players Being competitive is a whole another conversation Las Vegas will hate the A’s ownership There isn’t even a finalized plan of financing the stadium Settle down for the long haul (and keep your hand on your wallet) cuz these guys have NO CLUE how to actually get things done Fisher is a genius as wringing as much as possible from his fans Most teams around the league inflate their ticket sales numbers Many teams would be fine with a seating capacity of 14k I am a Cardinals fan routinely they announce 30k tickets sold and there is maybe 10k in the stands They sell tickets to ticket brokers right before the game and call them sales eventhough the brokers always end up with extras Buy some back-end starters and relief help that can be flipped Take a chance on that Japanese pitcher looking to come over stateside What professional baseball player with other options would sign with the A’s That Japanese pitcher is the next shintaro fujinami they couldn’t really go any lower… I’m sure Fisher did his best to haggle for some sandlot in the Bay area from the local kids I love how they can’t even commit to actually raising payroll despite how near impossible it is to stay the same – “Aim to raise payroll…” I wouldn’t wish this type of management on our biggest nemeses Spend one more dollar than last year and they’ve raised payroll The other 29 teams tell their fans the same thing year after year…We’re raising payroll And better people have wished death on me The strength to keep the baseball team I own in its rightful place Real fans would uproot themselves and move to Vegas instead of just complaining people love a team because they love their city It’s not a coincidence every sports team has left that city Those people there don’t love anything except playing the victim In other news – The Sacramento A’s are planning a to play a month of the season in Antarctica next year playing their ‘home’ games in places like Buffalo Then make it more realistic by giving John Fisher dysentery as much as they’re just enjoying taking a well deserved shat on John Fisher I feel sorry for A’s fans and Angels fans too but I’m grateful for Fisher and Arte Moreno The AL West is much easier to win when two of the teams have no desire or ability to win Still one of the most embarrassing situations in MLB right now Good luck luring any decent names to a minor league park I most definitely do not claim to be a decent name but I’ll gladly travel from Palo Alto to Sacramento to watch the A’s It’ll be fun to watch the Phillies play the A’s in a MILB park There must be an increase in revenue sharing to where they’re obligated to spend more Wouldn’t help a ton if they spend it on more garbage like Alex Wood and Stripling who are no better than a random minor league arm They should try to sign a few better pitchers and maybe work on long term deals for Rooker I don’t know what the Sacramento ballpark looks like but I can say firsthand the Durham Bulls Athletic Park provides a better fan environment than the Oakland Mausoleum The player facilities will have to be upgraded Have fun watching in Sac when it’s over 100 degrees and no shade Someone should get John Fisher front row seats Maybe put a very strong magnet in his hat and another one on the ball Won’t get killed by a foul ball if they put their phones back in their pockets and watch the game Not a bad seat in the house just means they have no cheap seats The total amount of “good” seats is no more than any other real stadium you just lose out on the atmosphere of having thousands of screaming fans Which I guess the As didn’t have already and its such an obvious problem that there is NO EXCUSE for MLB (and especially the MLBPA) not to have demanded an more detailed plan and analysis of just how how it can get You can only go up when you’re at rock bottom 3 bounce backs averaging ~$5m and a bunch of AAAA dreamers for the other two Fisher will give A’s players two free pairs of Levi jeans to attract free agents Fisher will give all players free access to the vending machines I wouldn’t be surprised if veterans would be excited to play there Better situation than the White Sox… As an A’s fan they are the embarrassment of baseball at least for 3 more years Who outside of guys who can’t play for other teams would want to play for them Fisher’s going to prove how spiteful he can be by spending huge the first year out of Oakland Fisher is going to offer Soto an offer the Yankees won’t be able to top The A’s went 39-37 from July 1st to the end of the season including playing .500 ball after the All-Star break They could very well be a fringe Wild Card team next season but they need to make similar moves as the Royals did last winter Lugo and Renfroe weren’t big sexy names but look at the difference they made in KC A team with a $62M payroll saying they’ll let it go up So maybe they’ll sign 1 non-scrap heap FA My guess is ownership points to the small stadium and actually cuts payroll Then rolls around in competitive balance money like Scrooge McDuck How can a team have zero dollars committed to 2025 I don’t think I’ve ever read an article that says a team had zero dollars committed to the next season because “dollars committed” excludes arbs estimates team options and players not yet eligible for arbs The A’s have no one and the Os have 2 on guaranteed contracts (Eflin and Felix Bautista 15 Orioles are arb eligible and nearly all will be tendered OAK has no one on a guaranteed contract and 5 arbs Every other team has $20m or more committed but in many cases it’s simply bad contracts (e.g The As are simply starting from a base of zero That payroll number included $30m for Wood Stripling and Diaz and another $10m or so for other guys that are gone They’re starting at zero (but call it 30m with obvious arbs) They could comfortably sign $40m worth of non-scrapheap Ps with some potential value on the field and potential deadline flips regardless Basically guys like Stripling and Wood that could actually deliver value Cortes and/or Lance Lynn might actually be good enough to get them See our ethics statement General manager David Forst has come a long way during his front office career Initially starting out as a scout all the way back in 2000 Forst quickly rose to assistant general manager in 2004 under Billy Beane and held that position until a promotion in 2015 when the team removed the assistant label and made him the official general manager of the club Beane was still the man dictating the course of the franchise but Forst was given more control over the roster and he is quickly approaching a full decade in the role with the club During that time he’s seen both playoff clubs and rebuilding squads the latter of which we are dealing with right now He’s rejected overtures from other teams to run their baseball operations departments instead opting to stay with the team he started his front office career with And it sounds as if he’s planning on sticking around around a while longer after his comments at the GM meetings There’s not a thought that I wouldn’t be in this for the long run,” Forst said at this week’s GM meetings The longtime GM had no say in the relocation to Las Vegas and has only focused on putting the best team on the field with the restrictions that come with working for John Fisher While he has a track record of success the most recent fire sale didn’t yield much in return likely prolonging the current playoff drought Unless there is a change from the ownership’s mind though it sounds as if we should expect Forst to be running things for the foreseeable future Hopefully we get some on-field results from his efforts sooner rather than later A’S IN THE AFL TODAY (11/6)SS Drew Swift: 1-2 There are no statistics available for this player Thanks for visiting By | November 2 and that “any trade activity we’re discussing is about improving the major league team in 2025 not about trading major league players for prospects.” though Erceg’s team control through the 2029 season is somewhat undermined by the fact that he is already 29 years old as Shea writes that the Athletics’ offseason wish list includes upgrading a porous defense a starting pitching staff that was one of the worst in baseball A whopping 10 players suited up at the hot corner for the A’s over the course over the 2024 season but this revolving door combined for a sub-replacement -0.6 bWAR (ranking 28th of 30 teams in third-base production) Forst will be limited in what he can spend on any new players though how much the A’s might spend on free agents in general is still up in the air due to the uncertainty surrounding their relocation “We have to be active in the trade market until we get a clear sense of how free agents are going to view the possibility of coming to Sacramento That’s been the impetus for our reaching out to clubs ahead of free agency starting,” Forst said Oakland Athletics Watch for the Sacramento A’s to make the playoffs in one of the next three years My favorite teams are the Washington football team and the Utah hockey club I’ll be wearing my Sacramento A’s jersey to the games I enjoy the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians I wish at least Indians were still around but there’s no point in arguing pretty sure they won’t pay rooker in arby maybe in 2026 But they’ll waste a chunk of money on crap veteran pitchers to prove they are spending revenue sharing checks but I don’t want them to give up anything of value because I hope John Fisher never has good news for the rest of his life Watch they will have competitive team going into their 1st Vegas season make a 2023 Rangers like run through the playoffs to get the Vegas fans excited…then he say f— you and blow up the team What concerns me about this team is their plan to build an open stadium in Las Vegas We Rangers had an open stadium in North Texas for years but attending games in the summer became enjoyable the Area 52s Aliens (or something similar) I would always pay for the air-conditioned seats I stopped attending games when I visit Vegas The A’s will never make the playoffs without players willing to play in 120+ degrees!!! games before a travel day and games serving as the first leg of a double header Or you need to change your scheduling and then get guys willing to give up their weekend evenings and travel on short rest And the average high at the end of May is still only 95 And maybe this will finally result in them scheduling less April games in the cold-weather states Frankly they need to worry about getting that stadium built before they worry about anything else The A’s fans deserve something to root for Any A’s fan who survives this as an A’s fan deserves baseball Sainthood JoeBrady is a Vegas resident who is a Red Sox fan and roots for the Raiders… just so people are aware based on his past comments I’ve seen from him I’m looking forward to catching some RS and Raider games out there I’ve attended some minor league games there a long time ago Don’t care one way or the other for Fisher But I’m not a big fan of fans that don’t attend games The Athletics were 32-32 in their last 64 games better than Texas and just one game behind Seattle for post all-star break Their next three years are going to be incredible Going .500 over a 64 game sample means the next three years are going to be incredible Did you just start watching baseball last week The next three years are going to be an incredible experience in Sacramento If only some group of taxpayers could subsidize the improvement of the roster… Fisher did everything he could to build a new stadium and keep the team in Oakland His dream was to bring a World Series to Oakland and Thao made sure his dream He pursued five different Bay Area sites all at an operating loss directly to his pocket just to make sure the legacy of the A’s would remain in Oakland I have trouble thinking of any of them as victims but anybody who does who thinks it would be wise for Thao or any other mayor to spend any city money on a stadium for a billionaire is nuts There are so many other priorities for Oakland to improve the lives of residents than spend public money on a stadium He could have put up more of his own money if he truly cared about Oakland Troll tongue-ing owner b-holes to get a response So they are going to trade prospects for big league talent That doesn’t seem like a wise move to me Improve the team to increase value and then sell minority stakes The team isn’t a pump and dump stock Fisher wants to generate excitement in Sacramento and Las Vegas without spending much They can move some blocked prospects for ML upgrades They should be looking at guys with multiple years of control back in any deal though Anyone who thinks that the As can’t compete in Sacramento did not watch them in the last half Gelof and Bleday is a pretty promising up the middle combo and Rooker and Butler combined for a 8.6 WAR So they’re basically missing corner IFs and one corner OF Pitching will require upgrades and that requires better FA choices than Stripling and Wood Proven FA starters will shy away from signing initially but what happens in Feb/March when some of the Lance Lynn/Kyle Gibson/Montas/Pivetta/Quintana/Lorenzen layer of FA pitchers are looking for pillow one year deals The As can load up with $8m to $12m deals and flip them if they’re out of it I can easily see the As looking very competitive on opening day Look if Oakland adds 100 million to their payroll in 2025.sure they could compete But what are the odds they actually do that If the Dodgers traded Austin Barnes to the As Why would anyone expect them to pass anyone in the division Should be a nice few years for the A’s I’d prefer they move to Tokyo or Seoul but I know that won’t happen a player on the roster could say he’s a Seoul man Don’t know if Oakland would consider trading Brent Rooker to Cincinnati for a package with Noevi Marte Graham Ashcraft and a minor league pitcher It seems like the time to trade Rooker was last year’s trade deadline when he was at peak value and the acquiring team got him for this year’s playoff run Whatever the return will be at this point Of course they’re past the ‘sell ‘ stage – they’re also past the ‘sign a handful of FA’ too; as to trades you bet that every player & their agent with any leverage will have a ‘no Sacramento’ protection in their contract Bush league team playing in a bush league stadium Little league players would be an upgrade to this roster Oakland GM should take advantage of the Cubs in Trades all blocked by high dollar FA’s he’s signed and extensions given Cubs are in a Position to be taken advantage of Sounds like the future home of Brett Baty at 3b any pitching with upside to offer the Mets back This is like the dollar store saying “they’re going to get new products”…yes but they’re going to cheap dollar store products Channelsreels-487673Reelsarrow-expand-487674Athletics GM David Forst talks Luis Severino dealDecember 10 2024 | 00:04:52add-reel-487675Reelsshare-square-2-487676ShareGeneral manager David Forst discusses the club's roster Luis Severino's historic contract with the Athletics and more he said it again at Friday's end-of-season media call He also acknowledged that it could be tricky selling free agents on coming to play in Sacramento "We do have to sell it" Forst said of pitching guys on playing in a minor-league facility "I'd be lying if I told you I knew what the answers were going to be on the other side We do expect to be active in free agency." let alone where this wild ride will ultimately end up Having to convince players to take their money doesn't sound like they'll be bringing in a ton of huge upgrades to the roster that could help them reach the postseason The more likely scenario that we'll see ultimately play out could be the A's being active on the trade market potentially taking on a contract that's not great while attaching an arm to the deal in order to get a couple of guys that could fit on this club Taking on that hypothetical contract would also make it so that the A's farm would stay largely intact The A's have five pending free agents: Ross Stripling, Alex Wood, T.J. McFarland, Scott Alexander and Trevor Gott. Those five combined to make right around $26 million in 2024, which is about 41% of the A's projected team salary of $63 million on FanGraphs Even with the 2025 arbitration estimates for Brent Rooker the A's are still down about $17.7 million from last year with the majority of the roster still being at least a year away from arbitration themselves the A's need to spend at least $20 million this winter Given that the A's presumably won't be too many player's first choice they may have to wait things out until right before camp to pounce on a couple of free agents that draw their attention Forst said that they'd be on the lookout for some bats more pitching to help get through the course of the season How they go about filling those needs will be interesting to see With so many players being able to hold multiple positions on the current roster which could make it just a little easier to make a moderate splash this winter Although the right to protest is safeguarded by universal human rights like freedom of speech and freedom of assembly Forst signals a worrisome rise in police brutality in dealing with environmental defenders courts tend to hand them heftier fines and heavier sentences the anti-mafia law was dusted off to deal with activists while Britain introduced draconic new laws which allowed one man to be sentenced to six months in prison for slow walking on a public road The Aarhus Convention guarantees environmental defenders the right to access information The treaty was ratified by the European Union and all its member states Other member states are mainly found in Central Asia Most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have signed the Escazú Agreement instead guarantees environmental defenders access to information participation in decision-making and justice when it comes to environmental issues “In terms of freedom of speech and the right to protest the world is moving in the wrong direction,” Forst said special rapporteur on human rights defenders spoke to Mongabay about the lack of rights for nature on the one hand and the growing crackdown on people who defend nature’s rights on the other This interview was edited for length and clarity Mongabay: “We do not accept that rights can be applied to nature or Mother Earth,” said a British representative at the 6th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi in February This point of view is in conflict with the one many environmental defenders But there’s an ongoing discussion at the United Nations and the Council of Europe on the granting of rights to nature as well as the concept of “ecocide.” Some states are currently very reluctant as special rapporteur on human rights defenders where there is still a strong Indigenous community and culture They have a different cosmovision with a different perception of nature in which the Earth is something much more than just the Earth that is something very difficult to understand That’s why it is important for all people to have a voice and be able to participate in the decision-making process It will take time to accept and adopt Indigenous ways of thinking Mongabay: As long as nature has no intrinsic rights this largely means others who may want to protect the environment will seek to stand up for it your report signals an alarming trend of growing repression and criminalization of environmental protest and civil disobedience Why is language and the way protesters are spoken about important Michel Forst: Following my election as special rapporteur in 2022 all of whom complained about how the political discourse hampered their right to protest politicians are using words like “eco-terrorist” or “green Taliban,” completely forgetting what these terms originally meant Such claims are then repeated by the mainstream media when describing young activists blocking access to a highway and calling for them to be treated and punished like terrorists thus conveying the idea that they are criminals who should be arrested and sentenced to heavy fines and prison terms A positive development is France’s new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal who recently said in an interview that he had banned the use of the term eco-terrorist by his government As he’s only 35 years old; perhaps he understands better what it means for the young generation to be called such a thing The danger of deriding environmental defenders by the mainstream media and in the political sphere puts them at the risk of threats Mongabay: When it comes to rules and regulations in what ways have countries limited the right of environmentalists to protest Michel Forst: Some countries have used old laws and regulations the anti-mafia law has been used to ban protesters from being in certain cities laws of the past that were meant to deal with terrorist outfits such as the Rote Armee Fraktion were used to deal with the environmental group Letzte Generation (Last Generation) which do not have the same history as Italy or Germany new legislation has been adopted to fight and combat young activists which makes “public nuisance” a criminal offense punishable with up to 10 years in prison The 2023 Public Order Act further criminalizes peaceful protest attaching oneself to another person or object one British Just Stop Oil activist was sentenced to 6 months in prison for slow walking on a public road Two others were sentenced to a combined five years for hanging a banner on a bridge It is interesting to note that investigative journalists in Britain have shown that the oil lobby was behind formulating both acts the oil lobby in Britain developed its own set of rules and regulations which were then passed into law by the British Parliament Mongabay: What is the trend when it comes to enforcing rules and regulations among police the police rely more on heavy-handed tactics including the use of water cannons and pepper spray They make more arrests and conduct lengthy detentions for identity checks with protesters being held for up to nine hours in Portugal in Italy what used to be “soiling” is now increasingly being qualified as “damage” or “destruction,” while in France “obstruction of traffic” has become “endangering the lives of others,” which allows prosecutors in both cases to demand heavier fines and sentences is companies are increasingly taking to civil injunction [a court order ordering someone not to do something] to prevent people from protesting Activists can be listed without being notified they can be charged in both a criminal and a civil court for which play a crucial role in upholding the rule of law through the use of tough pretrial detentions lengthy procedures and harsh sentences contribute in the process of repression and criminalization of environmental defenders judges have banned the use of the word “climate” and “climate change” as a defense in the courtroom for which both the one on trial and his or her lawyer can be charged The question is: How can activists explain their motives if they are not allowed to bring up the climate and climate change Mongabay: Are there no positive developments less prosecution and generally only mild sentences of a few days They seem to realize the importance of the triple planetary crisis we are facing in terms of climate change there have been some instances of judges lifting sentences Mongabay: In the U.S., the 2016 Dakota Pipeline protests, led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and thousands of Native American supporters, not only triggered a major crackdown but also a flood of anti-protest legislation. According to the U.S. Protest Law Tracker 45 states have introduced 303 anti-protest bills Were the Dakota Pipeline protests a ground zero for environmental protesters so I can’t say much about the Dakota Pipeline protests What I can say is that in countries such as the U.S. there is a trend similar to the one in Europe a pivotal moment in Europe was the 2015 Paris Agreement when many people realized governments were not going to implement it which led to an increase in environmental protests Mongabay: Is the repression of environmental protest part of a wider erosion of human rights Michel Forst: The right to protest is at risk in many countries around the world we currently see in many countries the Foreign Agents [Registration] Act being introduced Africa and Asia are copying the bad example Something else that is worrisome in this context is that new groups and networks have seen their access to funding being cut although the right to receive funding is protected by the 1998 U.N Mongabay: Do you believe the future is more and more authoritarian In terms of freedom of speech and the right to protest the world is moving in the wrong direction climate conferences (COP29) will take place in 2024 in Azerbaijan You foresee an improvement in terms of participation compared to the previous three COPs Michel Forst: The right to participate in international forums is very important The last two COPs took place in UAE and Egypt There were significant restrictions on access to the country and the conference We are currently working closely with the authorities of Brazil where in October the next biodiversity COP will take place to ensure that things are done differently Both countries have so far been very forthcoming and we hope that may set a precedent for the next COP which will probably take place in Australia Mongabay: Does that include Indigenous people as they are often the first and most directly affected we have given indications to guarantee and promote the participation of Indigenous peoples in the international conferences as in the right to express themselves and provide input in their own wording I spoke on many occasions with Indigenous representatives and they always say: “This is our lives being discussed we want to have a say.” And they are absolutely right Listen to a Mongabay Newscast episode about climate activism: Banner image: Protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline on Oct. 25, 2016. Springs had his breakout season in 2022 in his age 29 season going 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA (3.04 FIP) across 135 1/3 innings 25 of his 33 appearances that season came as a starting pitcher but after making three starts in 2023 in which he held a 0.56 ERA he needed Tommy John surgery and missed the rest of the season before the Rays decided to play it safe and shut him down in September Forst noted that if it weren't for the injury that has had him miss the majority of the past two seasons he's not sure that Springs would have even been available to them "I'm not sure he's available were he healthy the last two years he looked like he was on track to be one of if not the best pitcher in the big leagues that year with his first three starts...He did get shut down in September [of 2024] Ken Rosenthal also did some digging on Springs being shut down both he and the Rays informed the A’s that he could have kept pitching Given his injury history over the past two seasons and totaling just 49 innings in the big leagues over that span A's on SI asked Forst about any potential workload concerns for Springs in 2025 "He obviously has not had a much of a workload the last two seasons He got up close to 70 innings this year between rehab and the big leagues So I don't see any reason he couldn't throw 160+ innings this year as we do with everybody will keep an eye on him as the season goes along But it's not a situation where we go into the year having to worry about it." As we have mentioned numerous times throughout the offseason, the A's have been really honing in on pitchers with ground ball rates above 50%, most recently with the addition of Noah Murdock in the in the Rule 5 Draft Murdock held a ground ball rate of 62.1% last season which could make him a terrific fit for the A's bullpen at Sutter Health Park his lone season of over 100 innings in the big leagues When we asked Forst how he may fit into Sutter Health given the team's desire to add guys that keep the ball on the ground ground balls have a better chance of not being homers so certainly that's something we've looked at I think I've said we don't really know yet how Sutter Health is going to play as a big league Park He also has a lot of swing and miss with his fastball up in the zone and the change up He's had success in a lot of different ballparks As for where Springs will fit into the rotation Forst reiterated that Severino will be the Opening Day starter but that A's manager Mark Kotsay and pitching coach Scott Emerson will be in charge of filling out the rest of the starting rotation and where each player slots in This could end up being something where the A's want to space out the left-handers in their rotation so he goes second or even fourth with JP Sears as the other lefty option They could also choose to hold off on using Springs if they want to have one of their big additions this winter be on the bump for their first game in Sacramento which would take place in the A's fifth game of the season given that the team will place winning games above all else Forst was asked if there was a chance that he could look to add yet another starting pitcher this offseason He said that they have open conversations about adding on but that they'd have to weigh those options with the other opportunities they have in other spots TISCH MILLS – “Misery” is on the calendar, but October won’t be a miserable month for The Forst Inn The historical lodge at E2910 County Road BB in Tisch Mills features theater In October, its Arts Collective will present the Manhattan Short Film Festival and its production of Stephen King’s “Misery.” The Manhattan Short Film Festival will be at 4:30 p.m Those who attend can cast their votes for Best Film and Best Actor in the 27th annual festival alongside viewers in more than 500 other venues across the globe that gather to see the 10 finalists Past finalists have garnered Oscar nominations Tickets are $20 for seating in the intimate cabaret theater Options for light appetizers are available to purchase with a ticket More: Delve into ‘The History of Female Pirates’ at next Think & Drink at Wisconsin Maritime Museum Oct. 3 The Arts Collective will present William Goldman’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel “Misery” starting Oct The production features Martin Schaller as Paul Sheldon Emilee Carroll as Annie Wilkes and Kevin James Sievert as the sheriff Hannah Otto is directing and the artistic team includes costumer Claran LaViolette properties master Gavin Annette and stage manager Phillip Jindra A news release said: “‘Misery’ is a thrilling stage version that captures the intense psychological drama of the original story premiered in 2015 and has been praised for its ability to translate King’s gripping narrative to the stage a fan who turns out to be dangerously obsessed with him Annie brings Paul to her remote home and becomes his caretaker her seemingly kind demeanor quickly turns sinister as she forces Paul to rewrite his latest novel according to her demands all while subjecting him to increasingly severe psychological and physical abuse.” Options for light dining are available with a ticket to mainstage productions and the pub opens 90 minutes before curtain More: Manitowoc Curd Crawl fundraiser to crown 2024 Cheese Curd Champion in October. Forst was among several officers who fired their weapons during a confrontation with Steven Kissack on Monday.  Videos of the incident appear to show five officers with guns drawn and pointed at Kissack when he was shot.  Forst is a 12-year veteran of the Wildlife Troopers stationed in Juneau. Meanwhile, the Juneau Police Department says it won’t release the names of its officers involved until early next week, in accordance with department policy. Forst and the Juneau police officers who fired their weapons have all been placed on administrative leave, following the policies of both agencies. Read more $67M deal from Athletics (0:45)Check out some key numbers from Luis Severino's 2024 season as joins an Athletics staff looking to bounce back in 2025 SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Athletics general manager David Forst said the team wanted to make a statement going into its new home. That was one the factors that led to its deal with Luis Severino was formally introduced by his new club Friday after finalizing a $67 million The veteran right-hander was a free agent for the second straight offseason after going 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 182 innings during his only season with the New York Mets. Those were his best numbers since he was an All-Star for the second straight year with the New York Yankees in 2018 person and teammate to help everybody to be better," Severino said after he put on an Athletics jersey for the first time It's the largest deal for the low-budget A's topping a $66 million contract for third baseman Eric Chavez covering 2005 to 2010 Severino can opt out and become a free agent again after the 2026 season The Athletics went 69-93 for their third straight losing season in 2024 They are planning to play the next three years in West Sacramento before they hope to move into a new stadium in Las Vegas "We wanted to make something of a statement coming into a new city and coming into a new ballpark," Forst said Signing someone with Luis' experience to be a leader was important to us." Severino is 65-44 with a 3.81 ERA in 156 starts and 16 relief appearances for the Yankees (2015-23) and Mets $67 million deal is the largest ever for the low-budget A's. AP Photo/Rich major leagues Severino said he researched the area to learn more about what it's like in the summer The deciding factor for Severino was the notion that the organization was going to be a strong family you talk about my teammates because you're going to be in the same room with the same guys for six months," Servino said and holding onto one of the ten best hitters in baseball this past season would seem to be a good starting point for how the team plans to reach those new heights A's GM David Forst said that the team is not planning to move Brent Rooker As we wrote about just a few days ago with Mason Miller the A's front office is genuinely trying to build a better club for 2025 and so moving some of their most attractive trade chips would be counterintuitive to reach the goals that the team has hit .294 with 39 homers and 112 RBI in 2024 and is one of the American League's Silver Slugger finalists the A's DH surpassed those marks in a big way this past season by posting a 165 OPS+ The difference between a 127 and a 165 OPS+ is the difference between a player having a nice season and establishing themselves as an elite bat in the game he also mentioned that he feels he has another level to reach for his game In his first season of arbitration eligibility, Rooker is projected to make $5.1 through the process by MLB Trade Rumors Rooker is one of the best players at his position and he's very much cost-controlled for the club next season Having him for $5.1 million is nearly the same as having Vlad Jr or Bobby Witt Jr.'s bats for the same price For a team like the A's to have that level of production available to them and to be able to afford it there's no way they're trading a key cog like Rooker this winter The only reason this comes up at all is because of the A's long track record of trading away good players though each of those trades came at different times for the franchise and were more or less predictable It's not very often that a deal they make is completely shocking Moving Rooker would at the very least be surprising some A's fans aren't believing Forst just yet Exactly 10 years ago today https://t.co/N5pw4wE4l4 pic.twitter.com/BNVjZsQ6kA but the team was at a different point in their competitive window at that point They'd just lost the AL Wild Card game to the Kansas City Royals and the club's mojo was running out the A's could have signed Donaldson long-term but that's not necessarily how John Fisher likes to roll and moving Donaldson and nearly every other All Star the team had that season was the direction the team went They also traded Jeff Samardzija that winter landing Marcus Semien and Chris Bassitt among others in a deal that helped the team in the rebuild process This winter the A's are coming off a 69-win season and are on the upswing Brent Rooker's continued success will help them get there a whole lot sooner Although Don Forst never saw himself writing a book inspired by Wind morning with a book idea in my head,” he recalls I found an editor willing to teach me the publishing process.” “The Reincarnation of Vincent Van Gogh,” is about an architect who begins painting in the style of the Dutch post-impressionist the experiences in my life inspire the stories I write,” Don said These experiences include the time he spent in the Air Force and traveling to Egypt with Bobbie “My book “The Retired Spy” was inspired by my life at Wind Crest part of the weekly Writers’ Group on campus and others who want to learn about the craft “The reaction to my books has been great!” he said “I kind of have a fan club here.” When he and Bobbie were researching retirement communities, they were drawn to Wind Crest’s maintenance-free apartment homes we simply place a call to General Services and it’s taken care of,” Don said “We knew that service would open up a lot of time for us.” Don and Bobbie also made it a point to speak with residents “Wind Crest was the only place where people always said ‘We love it here!’ The residents were so positive That wasn’t typical at the other retirement communities we explored,” he recalled “That’s one of the things we like most here–besides all the activities Now, Don and Bobbie find every opportunity to catch up with their friendly neighbors and take advantage of the amenities and activities on campus “We have made tons of new friends–through the activities and even while eating dinner at the restaurants,” he said the couple attends a stretching class together “I think it’s important to keep active physically especially at this stage in our lives,” Don said The couple keeps their minds sharp by playing bridge with other residents in the lounge twice a week they watch a new movie in one of the on-campus theaters The Forsts also enjoy painting: Don with oils and Bobbie with watercolors “The walls of our apartment home are covered with more than 50 paintings,” Don said Once again feeling a wave of inspiration to try something new Don decided to join the community’s Reader’s Theater–despite never having acted before “A resident approached me about taking on a role,” Don said “I think it was because of my voice,” which is deep and rich He likes that actors read their lines from a script Don played the ghost of Jacob Marley in a spin-off of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Written by a resident the homage was set at Wind Crest in the year 2042 “We’re having so much fun here,” he said “Everything we could ever want or need is right here and that’s really made a difference in our lives.” You must be logged in to post a comment and that has been how the team will adjust to playing in a different ballpark after calling the Oakland Coliseum home for 57 seasons The Coliseum offered pitchers plenty of help with more foul territory that any other ballpark along with a nice marine layer that would settle in at night Those factors won't be available to the pitchers in Sacramento where the A's will be playing in an "intimate" minor league ballpark I had asked some of the players about some adjustments they could make heading into 2025 and Mason Miller talked about pitching down in the zone a little more to try and keep the ball in the ballpark a strategy that was echoed with a couple of other pitchers on the roster One thing that I kept hearing was that pitchers have seen a ball with a 92 mile per hour exit velocity leave the park Typically the exit velocity for a home run at the Coliseum would have to be in around 105 mph "hopefully it helps us a little more than it'll hurt us," when speaking about playing in a new facility I was also able to ask A's GM David Forst if the team is planning on making adjustments to how the club prepares this winter so that they're ready for the challenges that Sacramento has to offer perhaps having a contact hitter add a little lift to their swing to rack up a few more homers "I would put this in the big bucket of things that are uncertain; how that ballpark is going to play We've obviously done a lot of work over the last few months trying to do the translation It's not as easy as how does it play as a Triple-A ballpark Our initial read is that it's not quite the hitter's ballpark that it has a reputation of being." About a month ago, Ross Stripling talked to A's on SI about playing big-league games in a minor-league facility as a member of the 2020 Toronto Blue Jays he mentioned that it'll add a few home runs to the totals of guys like Brent Rooker Forst also mentioned that the pitch to attract pitchers will be a little more difficult at Sutter Health Park than it was at the Coliseum this is a great place to pitch.' Like unequivocally all the objective numbers say the Coliseum is great for pitchers That probably isn't going to be the case in Sutter Health." Mark Kotsay also expressed a desire to add more "swing-and-miss" ability to the pitching staff for the 2025 season which would make sense since giving up decent contact could be a tricky proposition in the new ballpark In terms of tweaking the players that the team already has either on the 26-man roster or in the minors Forst said that the team's philosophy isn't to preach launch angle "and things like that." Instead they'll be looking for the best players they can attract this winter with the goal of reaching .500 and potentially pushing for a spot in the postseason if things break right "I'm not sure there's anything definitive about this ballpark that we can say we'll go into our either player development or our free agency We're we're still at the point where we're just looking for the best players." you most proud of in your professional career I was part of a team that spun off an organization that grew from 6 people to over 250 and was eventually sold for half a billion and stretched ourselves thin trying to keep our clients happy (and paying) but seeing your contributions come to life is highly gratifying Why did you choose this school’s online MBA program USC has an impressive reputation for having one of the country’s highest-rated online MBA programs I wanted something that allowed me the flexibility to keep my job and be on campus when I needed or wanted to USC’s “flipped classroom” approach allowed me to work at my own pace during the week then meet twice a week with my cohort and professors to have lively discussions about what we learned in our self-study What was your favorite part of being in an online MBA program I am a parent (2 daughters who are 3 and 5) and have a demanding job that requires me to travel about 30% of the year I knew committing to being on campus during the week would be impossible Being in the online MBA ensured my job wasn’t impacted and I didn’t miss any of my kid’s soccer games I remember my family took a trip to Mexico over the summer and I could still complete all my work and attend both lectures scheduled that week What was the most surprising thing about an online learning environment I have done online learning and worked from home for over ten years Being in online work or learning environments can feel lonely but the USC program does such a great job encouraging engagement How did your online experience compare with your in-the-classroom experience as an undergraduate student I was more prepared to enter this program since I had done online learning before What is unique about USC is that they still emphasize the live lecture and connected experience I still felt deeply connected to the professors and students all week I could join virtual office hours or email my professors and they all would get back to me very quickly I felt more connected in this program than in my on-campus undergrad classes What is your best piece of advice to an applicant for thriving in an online MBA program I tell all new students I meet that this is the key to success in online environments especially if you’re not used to online learning The weekly self-study work can be done on your schedule which can be fantastic if you have a busy schedule and need flexibility but it can also become a massive problem if you leave everything until the end of the week I always did my coursework in the morning before my day started How has your online education helped you in your current job I loved that I took my MBA later in my career because I constantly applied concepts we learned in class the night before to real-world situations at my job All the material is so applicable and helpful for working professionals and it helped me better navigate many work challenges Did you earn a promotion while in the program or immediately after graduation My goal for taking this program was to be able to switch industries after I completed it Why did you pursue an online MBA program instead of a full-time residential program Being a parent of young children and having a demanding job made the full-time program impossible I was not in a position where taking a year off work was an option so I am thankful I could do the online program without impacting my work or family Number of Hours Per Week Spent on an Online MBA: 25-30 What is your ultimate long-term professional goal I want to continue to help start-ups grow and eventually own my own business or several One of my favorite courses in the online program was the Entrepreneurship course because it taught us the ins-and-outs of taking an idea from concept to funding and beyond I am passionate about this space and can’t wait to use my MBA skills to build a company DON’T MISS: BEST & BRIGHTEST ONLINE MBAS: CLASS OF 2024 Our Partner plans to pillage the Oakland roster at the Trade Deadline but I think anyone that expects that we're gonna continue to just move guys out and turn them over for prospects is probably going to be disappointed next week There's guys here we think are gonna be part of the team beyond this year." that sounds like Mason Miller is sure staying put given that he won't hit free agency until after the 2029 season That could also mean that Brent Rooker is staying put given that he's under team control through 2027 and is set to hit arbitration for the first time next season Both players will be top-tier talents at their positions that are playing for fairly low salaries compared to their skill level The A's have five players that will be free agents after this season but three of them are currently on the IL--Ross Stripling but likely wouldn't net a huge prospect return The A's have been playing well this month With an inexperienced roster that is starting to come around offensively It would make sense that the A's would want to keep a couple of linchpins of the club--Rooker and Miller--on the roster moving forward It's also worth noting that the club has been getting solid production from numerous spots on the diamond JJ Bleday is in the midst of a breakout season Lawrence Butler was the AL Player of the Week last week Shea Langeliers has 18 home runs this year and continues to take steps forward Zack Gelof is pretty firmly entrenched at second Tyler Soderstrom was taking a huge leap forward before landing on the IL and Nick Kurtz could move quickly through the system The point here is that the A's have a number of positions that feel relatively handled at the moment and adding more prospects while taking away from what the big-league club is currently building would seem counterproductive The A's will have to start contending again at some point and they have the pieces in place to be an interesting team heading into 2025 © 2025 BVM Sports.
