House Democrats blocked an attempted assault on the metro by Republicans on the House Floor Monday, we voted down a bill that would have halted the Blue Line extension for two years, needlessly driving up the cost of the project by $2 million. On top of it, none of the bill’s authors actually live in a community that the extension would serve. City councils in both Crystal and Robbinsdale approved the alignment but the authors of the bill think they know better That’s not the only move against public transit House Republicans have made in the past week. Just the other day, the Tax committee passed – along party lines – an amendment to a GOP frankenbill that completely cuts transit funding from the metro area a service many seniors in our community depend on The metro area holds 55% of Minnesota’s population While all House Representatives legislate with their communities in mind we also have a responsibility to the people of Minnesota as a whole House Republicans seem to have forgotten that duty We have seen numerous bad faith bills so far – including repealing Paid Family and Medical Leave These bills are an unfortunate display of partisanship during a legislative session where our top priority is passing a state budget I’m hopeful that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle put down the political theatre soon and prioritize earnest work with DFLers as they will need to do to secure enough votes for any bill to pass off the House Floor Access to free and fair elections is a right DFLers will continue to fight for and protect that right Join your SD 43 lawmakers for an upcoming Town Hall meeting on Saturday at the Hennepin County Library’s Golden Valley branch This is a great opportunity to hear about what's happening in our district and share your questions and concerns To help combat the chaos in the news and from the White House I want to take a moment for positivity each week The Animal Humane Society is right here in our district and does great work to ensure animals in need find loving homes provide affordable care for pets in our community Meet Bella a 5-year-old boxer mix looking for a forever home Bella would do best in a home that can offer a lot of patience as she will need a little extra time to acclimate to a new environment lower-activity home is best for her to thrive in She’s an affectionate girl and loves giving snuggles and kisses once she gets to know you Visit the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley to meet Bella Unfortunately, due to technological restraints, replies to this newsletter won’t reach me. it's our state's largest health insurance provider serving vulnerable populations including seniors and individuals with disabilities requiring assistance The Joint Economic Committee's report presents concerning projections: proposed federal budget reductions could result in 89,000 rural residents losing coverage one-sixth of seniors without nursing home care and approximately 400,000 residents completely losing healthcare access These aren't just statistics - they're our family and neighbors who would suddenly find themselves without care they depend on Despite facing economic instability, Republicans continue to introduce legislation to throw money at pet projects and tax breaks. This week in the Taxes committee, I called out these wasteful proposals when we were presented with a bill that would eliminate sales tax for an elite golf tournament Democrats remain committed to protecting our residents from harmful policy changes because we believe healthcare access should be available to everyone not just those who can write big campaign checks Join me, Representative Cedrick Frazier, and Senator Ann Rest for a town hall meeting on Saturday We’ll discuss the state-federal defense against harmful federal policies talk about budget targets and progress of the 2025 session Registration is encouraged but not required. weekend in the series Photo credits: Chris Green PhotographyAshley Freiberg made an excellent start to her debut season in Porsche Carrera Cup North America by securing a top-10 finish at Sebring International Raceway The Porsche Sprint Challenge North America race winner adapted well to the higher level of competition as she began the season on the front foot with Kellymoss Freiberg finished race one in 13th before improving to a superb tenth in race two to complete a productive first weekend in the series Following her success in Porsche Sprint Challenge North America Freiberg stepped up to Porsche Carrera Cup North America for 2025 Now competing at the premier level of Porsche motorsport in North America Freiberg was aiming to use the knowledge gained from the past two season to begin her campaign on a high Sebring International Raceway also hosted the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America season opener and Ashley had fond memories of the circuit Freiberg claimed a runner-up result at the track on her way to third in the 992 Pro/Am standings in a campaign which featured one race victory and six further podium finishes the team with which Freiberg closed out her 2024 season with Ashley was targeting a strong start to the season Both free practice sessions at Sebring were held on Wednesday with Freiberg immediately on the pace Ashley set the tenth fastest time with her quickest lap only half a second away from the top-3 She followed this up with a 12th place result in session two underlining her consistency on her debut weekend Qualifying was held on Thursday morning with Freiberg looking to extract peak performance from her new tyres On her first run Ashley was comfortably inside the top-15 before returning to the pits to fit a second set of tyres the session was halted by a red flag while the Kellymoss driver was on a flying lap on her new tyres This impacted her progress and although she was able to set one final lap in the closing stages of qualifying At the end of her first Porsche Carrera Cup North America qualifying session Freiberg had set the 15th fastest time overall Photo credits: Chris Green PhotographyFreiberg’s debut race in the series was held on Thursday afternoon with the Kellymoss driver lining up from the eighth row of the grid It was a confident start from Ashley who held her position on lap one before overtaking Pro class rival John Jodoin on lap two Despite JDX Racing driver Paul Bocuse moving ahead on lap three as he recovered from an early setback Freiberg was setting good sectors which regularly matched those battling for top-10 positions Pro-Am class leader JP Martinez was running directly ahead of Freiberg and passing the ACI Motorsports driver was crucial to further progress Martinez was keen for a Pro class car to remain between himself and second placed driver Alan Metni and therefore overtaking the Pro-Am driver was challenging for Freiberg Ashley made a clean move on lap seven and immediately began catching Sabre Cook Freiberg overtook Cook and followed this up with a personal best time on lap 12 a number of drivers were battling hard for positions just outside the top-10 and Ashley began closing in on this fight Grant Talkie was the driver directly ahead and Freiberg cut the gap to less than two seconds with just a handful of laps remaining Freiberg completed her debut race in Porsche Carrera Cup North America in a credible 13th place overall Freiberg started from 13th on the grid and made a confident initial start she was up to 11th position as the race entered a full course yellow period after contact was made between Michael McCann As the drivers lapped behind the safety car Jimmy Llibre pitted and this elevated Ashley into the overall top-10 for the first time Freiberg made a good restart and immediately opened up a gap to the leading Pro-Am machine of JP Martinez directly behind This allowed the Kellymoss driver to focus forward on mounting a challenge on her fellow Pro class rivals A series of personal best times ensured Freiberg remained in touch with the drivers ahead as they set a fast pace at the head of the field Jared Thomas was now the driver ahead and Freiberg began closing in on her fellow Porsche Carrera Cup North America rookie Ashley had cut the gap to Thomas to just one second as she aimed to mount a late challenge on the JTR Motorsport Engineering driver The race ran incident-free to the checkered flag with Freiberg just unable to bridge the deficit to Thomas she secured an excellent tenth place result on her series debut to complete a successful weekend at Sebring Freiberg enjoyed a strong debut in the highly-competitive one-make series and showed her credentials by consistently challenging for top-10 results Her pace in both qualifying and the races was extremely impressive and she will be targeting regular appearances in the top-10 as the season progresses For the next round of Porsche Carrera Cup North America Freiberg will compete at a new circuit for her in the shape of Miami International Autodrome on the weekend of 3rd/4th May On Friday, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that House Republicans violated our state constitution when they seized the house and appointed their own Speaker and committees Minnesota voters chose an equal number of Democrats and Republicans at the ballot box House Republicans tried to seize power through the back door They are also trying to silence the voice of 22,000 Shakopee voters by blocking their chosen representative Republicans plan to block him from taking his seat in the House in an effort to accomplish their extreme agenda - attacking reproductive rights and even ending free school meals for our kids Refusing to seat a duly elected legislator has never happened before in Minnesota when a representative has done nothing wrong and it would set a dangerous precedent of unfounded election contests Republicans currently have a temporary one-seat advantage even after we're back to an evenly divided House Our solution is straightforward: Republicans can lead while they have this temporary advantage but once we're back to equal numbers (67-67) Democrats are waiting for Republicans to return to the negotiating table to get this done I met with AFSCME members at Hennepin County Social Services visited a manufactured home community in Blaine met with teachers from the SEA school in Golden Valley The message from voters was clear - they want Democrats and Republicans to work together We're ready to negotiate a fair agreement whenever Republicans are willing to come back to the table To stay up to date with our important work at the State Capitol, you can see the Minnesota House of Public Information Services’ nonpartisan recaps of high-profile bills, committee hearings, and floor sessions with their Session Daily publication You can also stay up-to-date with the latest by following my Facebook page.  I hope you had a joyful holiday season and a happy new year I am honored to be back representing Crystal things are ramping up as we prepare to convene for the biennium as a new Minnesotans voted for equal numbers of Democratic and Republican state representatives A 67-67 tie in the 134-member Minnesota House of Representatives is extremely rare but I see it as a golden opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to show Minnesotans that we can govern together on a bipartisan basis as I’ve done throughout my service in the legislature my Republican colleagues have walked away from power sharing negotiations and are now attempting to engage in an illegitimate power grab that could undo the progress we made over the past two years During a January 6 press conference Republicans confirmed their plan to try to use a two-week one-seat advantage to seize control of the House for the next two years even though Minnesotans voted for equal numbers of DFL and Republican state representatives Republicans also made clear that they would use their temporary one-vote advantage to unseat my colleague Representative Brad Tabke of Shakopee and order a special election regardless of the fact he won in effect disenfranchising 21,980 voters who cast their ballots in the November election That is outrageous -- and has never been done in Minnesota history I’m calling on my Republican colleagues to abandon this illegitimate power grab A majority in the Minnesota House requires 68 members which means we have to work together for Minnesota on a bipartisan basis to get things done I am hopeful that a power-sharing agreement can be adopted before the new legislative session begins on January 14 my focus is on doing everything within my power to make that happen I have no interest in denying quorum by not attending floor sessions but we cannot allow this illegitimate power grab to occur and overturn the will of the voters I want to get to work with my Republican colleagues on January 14 and govern under shared power but first Republicans need to return to the negotiating table Though we are facing some turbulence as we prepare for session I want to assure you that my main priority is Please reach out if you have any questions or if I can be of service DFLers remained unified throughout this process working diligently to secure an agreement that allows Representative Brad Tabke to serve the term to which he was democratically elected and ensure the will of Minnesota voters is honored The agreement outlines that while Republicans hold a slim 67-66 advantage they will have temporary control of the House of Representatives should the special election in Roseville on March 11th return the House to a 67-67 split as we expect it to our agreement then turns to a co-governance structure Each committee will be co-chaired by a Democrat and a Republican with equal representation of the caucuses on each committee Advancing any bill will require a bipartisan vote This structure fundamentally requires collaboration and compromise and as the co-chair of the Elections Committee I’m looking forward to collaborating with my co-chair and colleagues across the aisle I want to be crystal clear: a tied House means we must work together My commitment is to collaborate constructively with my Republican colleagues Our shared goal is to make meaningful progress for Minnesota and its residents During a time where bipartisanship on the national stage is absent I’m relieved to see it is alive and well here in Minnesota Should anyone – whether it’s Donald Trump or Minnesota Republicans – attempt to overturn our democracy That's not just a promise; it's a fundamental responsibility I want to express my sincere gratitude to the community leaders and constituents who took time to meet with me and share their priorities for this legislative session and I'm excited to continue advancing our shared values through legislation Eid Mubarak to all celebrating this week and weekend David Gottfried of Roseville was sworn into office officially bringing the Minnesota House back to a 67-67 tie I’m hopeful that the days of dangerous right-wing bills on the Floor are over thanks to committees being restored to an equal split of Republicans and Democrats I’m optimistic that we will spend our remaining weeks of the legislative session working together on bills that will actually pass the House rather than items from the MAGA agenda that don’t stand a chance at a single DFL vote I also finally took up the gavel as co-Chair of the Elections Committee My main priority in committee this year is protecting the progress we made towards making our elections safer and more accessible during the 2023-2024 biennium it’s up to us to craft a state budget that is balanced and beneficial for all of Minnesota I had the chance to catch up with educators and representatives from the Robbinsdale and Hopkins school districts There’s so much more work to be done to You’re not alone. This time of year, my bill to eliminate the unnecessary time change and adopt year-round standard time gets a lot of attention in the media and previously passed it as adopting permanent daylight saving time instead of standard time we cannot move to daylight saving time without congressional authorization but we can move to standard time without it in the meantime This bill transcends party lines – Democrats and Republicans both love it and hate it I have received some notes of concern from constituents to remind me that we have bigger fish to fry than daylight saving time This is a bill that generates a lot of attention from state and local media this time of year so you’ve likely heard about it quite a bit over the past week while offered a moment of bipartisan levity on the Floor Monday is certainly not towards the top of my list of pressing issues My energies are focused on making life more affordable for Minnesotans and protecting our progress from last term Meet Sara a Valley Humane Society to meet Sara and add her to your family - Bella from my last newsletter has found her fur-ever home I’m writing with another update on the Minnesota House I joined my colleagues in denying quorum to the Republicans due to their refusal to work together on a power-sharing agreement Minnesota voters sent a tied House to the legislature for this biennium Republicans are denying the will of the voters after Secretary of State Steve Simon declared no quorum was present and adjourned the House Republicans illegally seized control and “appointed” themselves to the Speakership to the Chair positions of all committees (leaving all DFL members off of committees entirely) Minnesota state law and our Constitution are clear that this was not legitimate House business and the DFL has since filed lawsuits against the GOP asking the Supreme Court to confirm that all of their actions are null and void Republicans have indicated that they might refuse to seat additional members I refuse to participate in a process that will result in the disenfranchisement of thousands of Minnesotans Doing so would be a slap in the face to democracy and would undercut the work we did last session to make our voting processes more transparent I also refuse to participate in sham proceedings that violate the Minnesota Constitution I am continuing to work hard for the residents of District 43B While we wait for the Republicans to come back to the table I’m working here in the district and around the metro taking meetings with our legislative partners I was able to visit one of our Planned Parenthood locations and met with Robbinsdale School Board Chair Greta Evans-Becker to discuss ways we can work together I’m also working with colleagues to prepare legislation for the biennium to ensure we can hit the ground running once a power-sharing agreement is worked out District 43B – 651-296-4176 – rep.mike.freiberg@house.mn.gov  651-296-9873 bill that only serves to bully trans kids and make it more difficult for all girls to play sports in Minnesota House Democrats were unanimous in their opposition to the bill which did not receive enough votes to pass the Minnesota House House Republicans then moved to lay it over for future consideration  State Representative Mike Freiberg (DFL – Golden Valley) voted against the legislation and released the following statement:  “What Republicans claim was a bill to protect children was clearly a poorly veiled attempt to score political points -- by bullying children “It’s time for Republicans to take this body and this work seriously There are a number of bipartisan proposals and solutions to real problems that are being carelessly thrown on the backburner so that Republicans can parade a MAGA agenda DFLers are unified in defending human rights while Republicans continue to attempt to take them away and trans kids deserve better than being bullied by politicians.”  Representative Freiberg called Republicans’ bluff about their claimed intent to protect athletes by offering an amendment to require students be vaccinated against diseases like diphtheria unless the vaccine is contra-indicated for medical reasons Video of today’s floor debate can be found on the House Public Information YouTube channel SearchAshley Freiberg ends the season with podium finish at one of the weekend and made a good initial launch to hold third position while setting the quickest middle sector of any driver on the first lap The top-four drivers ran in close proximity in the initial stages before Jared Thomas closed up on the back of the Kellymoss driver for third after setting a new fastest lap of the race Freiberg immediately responded and opened out the gap behind to three quarters of a second before setting the overall fastest first sector on lap six Thomas began to close in once again as the race approached the middle stages with the JTR Motorsport Engineering driver able to move ahead on lap nine after making contact in the Esses Ashley was able to move ahead Scott Blind on lap 15 however Freiberg was able to bank valuable points after taking the checkered flag in fifth position in the 992 Pro/Am class later promoted to fourth after a penalty was assessed to Thomas for the earlier contact Photo credits: Anthony PuopoloFor the season finale on Sunday Freiberg lined up from third position with Jared Thomas starting alongside on the second row Freiberg and Thomas ran side-by-side through the opening turns with the JTR Motorsports Engineering driver clearing the Kellymoss racer for third Ashley remained in the group of drivers contesting for the podium positions and although lost immediate touch with Thomas she settled into a rhythm and looked for opportunities to regain the position Thomas overtook Paul Bocuse and Freiberg was immediately able to cut the gap to Bocuse to less than a second A series of personal best times aided her cause as she pushed to end the season on the podium By lap nine she was faster than both Thomas and Bocuse as they began to battle for position Freiberg’s speed in sector one was consistently among the fastest in the field but her challenge for third position was then halted by a full course caution period while two cars were recovered three laps remained and Freiberg was aiming to finish the season on a high The top-four cars remained in secure positions despite the late-race restart and this saw Freiberg take the checkered flag in fourth position within the 992 Pro/Am class a post-race penalty awarded for Aaron Jeansonne promoted Ashley onto the podium to end an excellent season in Porsche Sprint Challenge North America By securing her sixth podium finish of the campaign Freiberg sealed third position in the 992 Pro/Am championship standings it has been a superb season for the Kellymoss driver with her victory at Circuit of the Americas a particular highlight Only at Road America did Freiberg fail to stand on the podium underlining both her speed and consistency as she regularly fought for race victories Ashley will now be looking ahead to the off-season where she will be Graham Presents company manager for rock guitarist Joe Satriani and CEO of the Second Octave Entertainment company folk music star Joan Baez asked her when she was going to stop calling herself “Girl,” Brigden wrote in her memoir “I thought, ‘I’m gonna make this for my kids,’ but then it morphed into more than I planned,” she said of her book in a 2019 interview with The Press Democrat The the 93rd Minnesota Legislature concluded its most consequential two-year session in state history After many years of divided government and gridlock that prevented meaningful progress for our state House DFLers got the job done through a host of accomplishments that will benefit Minnesotans for generations to come This session ended with decisive action to avoid the extraordinary obstruction of our colleagues across the aisle that threatened to block our deal to increase compensation for drivers and keep Uber/Lyft in Minnesota as well as policies to improve the child care tax credit and to expand health insurance coverage for reproductive care In an economy tilted in favor of big corporations and the wealthy few the House DFL Majority has focused on taking on monopoly power by enacting policies reigning in abusive and anti-competitive practices of big pharma We are supporting and investing in workers The Child Tax Credit is projected to cut childhood poverty by one-third We are helping seniors keep more money in their pockets and delivering property tax cuts and an improved renters rebate program including a cap on co-pays for prescription drugs to treat diabetes and allergies at $25 for one month’s supply There were a few things I advocated for that didn’t quite make it across the finish line this year but I plan to continue fighting for terminally ill Minnesotans to have options when facing the worst I’m proud to say that a number of important pieces of legislation to improve the safety and fairness or our elections are now law I was also proud to deliver on a number of issues for our community Here are other bills we passed this year that will improve the lives of all Minnesotans in every corner of our state: I want to thank you for giving me the privilege of serving as your representative Being trusted to legislate with my community’s best interest is not something I take lightly and I’m proud to be part of creating a better Minnesota for all of us under DFL leadership Minnesota state parks and trails are waiting June 8th with free admission to everyone - no vehicle permits needed and there's a state park within 30 miles of most Minnesotans it's a great opportunity to get out there and explore someplace new - or visit an old favorite at a new time of year Whether you stay the whole weekend or just spend a few hours outside unique talent of being at home in both the jazz and classical arenas. Throw three-time Grammy winning composer-pianist Daniel Freiberg into the mix with his Jazz Clarinet Concerto “Latin American Chronicles” (2015) and you’ve got an unbelievable winning combination on the stage at the SBMF the performance featured D’Rivera with Freiberg on piano Together with the SBMF Orchestra under Tham associate conductor of the Oregon Symphony the combined forces had a whale of a good time with the Jazz Clarinet Concerto a three-movement piece imbued with Latin jazz at its core The concerto jumped out of the gate with the piano establishing a peppy undercurrent D’Rivera joined the fun with elan that was accented with a huge His cadenza skipped about playfully with feathery-light sounds and the movement (“Panorámicas”) ended on a terrific upswing that drew enthusiastic applause The next movement (“Diálogos”) slowed things down with a dreamy passage that was accented now and then by a raspy sound from the percussion battery A cello and piano duet was topped off with high The orchestra then shifted to a heavy melodic sequence and the movement exited with only a hollow shushing sound from the clarinet remaining.  The last movement (“Influencias”) took off with a bouncy and light feeling the orchestra mimicking phrases that D’Rivera played The piece transitioned to a night-clubby atmosphere with the drum-set becoming more prominent Splashing chords from the piano and a throbbing double bass gradually quickened to a faster pace and a big cadenza in which the clarinet raced around with a swirling improvisational style An emphatic finale wrapped things up with gusto that roused the audience to a standing ovation The acclamation brought D’Rivera back to center stage where he and the jazz quartet responded with a lovely Venezuelan waltz number that was wistful and charming In her introductory remarks to Celilo Falls: We Were There (premiered in 2022) Ives dedicated the performance to Yaki Bergman who asked her to write the piece five years earlier Tham and the orchestra delivered the eleven-movement work with emotional gravitas The first movement (“N’CheWana”) conveyed grandeur of The Columbia River pouring over the series of cataracts that were known as Celilo Falls The sound of tapping violins and the lush harp in the second movement depicted the art and craft of fishing with a sense of wonder The “Deep Time” movement floated a wash of sonic color that evoked timelessness “Grandfather Storyteller” settled things down with introspective “What I Miss Most Is the Mist” had a nostalgic feel that was tinged with a bit of irony and “She Who Watches” was poignantly mournful “There has been Something” evinced a sense of loss but closed with a ray of hopefulness – through the free-spirited line for the flute The music was accompanied by the evocative photography of Joe Cantrell Those projected images would have benefited from a larger screen The poetry of Ed Edmo was spoken by narrator Sherrie Davis The concert opened with Gabriella Smith’s Rust a one-movement piece that shifted about restlessly It started with a slow ascent that featured sliding tones from the brass and a ground passage from the lower strings Repetitive phrases – a la minimalism – emerged more strongly underscored at times by glissandos from the trombones Tham became a kind of human metronome as she guided the mosaic of sounds into a quickening pace The music had a machine-like quality as it surged to the ending Maybe it knocked the rust off… I’m not sure the piece made me wish that I could hear it again Post Script – The hall used by the SBMF at the Chinook Casino was much better than I expected But it was kind of jarring to walk past hundreds of electronic slot machines with their flashing lights and unrelenting sounds.  Email *Your email address will not be published Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. An issue in practice limited her track time and left her only eighth fastest after the first day of driving, 1.7 seconds off pace setter Thomas. The team worked tirelessly to find the issue and the #222 car was completely taken apart with many parts being replaced in a mission to solve the technical gremlins And the effort did not go unrewarded: despite the limited running Freiberg was as impressive as ever and qualified in second place having found almost two full seconds and clocking a 2:08.942 alongside MDK Motorsports teammate Paul Bocuse for the first race of the weekend Photo credits: Kyle Schwab / Porsche North AmericaBocuse had a good start but it would be Jared Thomas to snatch the top spot at turn 1 with a stellar manoeuvre from third Ashley Freiberg committed to the outside line going around Bocuse at turn 1 and following Thomas closely The top two immediately drove away over the first lap and Ashley started to put pressure on the JTR Motorsports Engineering driver just one tenth of a second ahead as they crossed the line for the first lap of the race Freiberg and Thomas were the only drivers to run on the 2:10 pace although the race leader managed to put a few tenths in between them and was trying to come back in the mix and closed back in on Freiberg The battle for third overall was also rather heated with Anthony McIntosh having to endure the pressure from both Therese Lahlouh and David Musial but Lahlouh successfully held fifth - although she would later receive a 3 second track limit penalty Freiberg continued to consistently lap in the 2m10 pace and kept Bocuse at bay despite both improving their personal best laps Ashley set purple sectors - but couldn't quite pull away from Bocuse behind - although both slightly reduced the gap to Thomas On lap 11, Freiberg had stretched her legs and gained over one second to Thomas; the leader made a small mistake in the esses and the Shift Up Now athlete was now suddenly back in the game: Thomas was heavily under pressure and another mistake gave Freiberg the opportunity to make a move: it was exactly what the driver of the #222 MDK Motorsports Porsche was waiting for and made a move stick the leading trio was covered by six tenths of a second and Thomas could do nothing to fight back this time and Freiberg took the lead for the first time ever in the 992 class With Thomas also under pressure from Bocuse Ashley set a personal best in 2:10.605 on lap 15 and slightly pulled away she was in complete control and crossed the finish line to take her first race win in a 992 GT3 Cup car 2.4 seconds ahead of Thomas and Bocuse after a fantastic performance "Speechless," she commented after the race which represented yet another milestone in a remarkable career made of big battles to secure enough funding "I just can’t thank everyone enough for the endless support behind the scenes So grateful for this wild ride of a life." Photo credits: Kyle Schwab / Porsche North AmericaIn the second sprint race of the weekend Freiberg would have to make her way up from third place based on the fastest lap classification from Saturday's race Paul Bocuse and Jared Thomas sharing the front row as her MDK Motorsports Porsche 992 broke down on the back straight on her way to the grid when the green flag flew with 28 minutes to go Thomas once again grabbed the lead from Bocuse at turn 1 They spent the entire race challenging each other but a late caution halted the battle just as they had started to trade positions; Jared Thomas therefore took back to back victories a second and a third place in addition to two fourth place finishes over the first three double-headers of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America's season Ashley Freiberg collected important points and now sits third in the overall championship standings Freiberg was then supposed to take part in the first ever round of the Porsche Endurance Challenge sharing a Porsche 992 GT3 Cup car with Porsche Sprint Challenge West division Am class podium finisher Laura Ely A strong qualifying saw the duo qualifying seventh fastest in the combined time - but an accident in Ely's solo race meant that the car was unable to be ready for the endurance contest "Some days at the track are tougher than others" - Freiberg wrote "I didn’t get to take the green flag in race 2 due to a mechanical issue and unfortunately Laura Ely and I pulled out of the endurance race due to some car damage sustained from Laura’s race earlier in the day" "Unfortunately this is a part of the sport but it is also what makes those wins and podiums so sweet Aiming to carry momentum in the 992 GT3 class of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America championship Ashley Freiberg will be back behind the wheel at Virginia International Raceway for the fourth round on the weekend of June 15th/16th There will be 24 specialist lectures with speakers from nine countries at the event The keynote speech will be presented by Professor Peter Heck from the Trier University of Applied Sciences (DE) titled “Livestock as a value-adding component in regional material flow management” Other speakers will cover topics including scaling up sustainable chemical production For details on the full program, registration and more, head to the Freiberg Leather Days event website Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Jefferson Starship has been to the moon and back their music will once again carry them all over the world something which is surprising to vocalist and guitarist David Freiberg a founding member who joined the band in 1974 he's been back with the group for nearly 20 years since the early 2000s "I certainly never thought I'd be 85 and playing in a rock and roll band," he laughs during a conversation with UCR I'm having as much fun as I ever did." "Right now it’s wonderful," Freiberg said with a laugh in a recent phone call "I’m having such a good time with this band." It's that band — which also includes Cathy Richardson on vocals Chris Smith on keyboards and bass and Donny Baldwin on drums — that will play at 8 p.m Tickets, at $28-$33, remain available at the Penn's Peak website. Even Freiberg left Jefferson Starship for an extended period in the 1990s and 2000s singer/guitarist Paul Kantner and drummer John Barbata who transitioned from Jefferson Airplane — the group whose psychedelic rock helped propel the 1960s with songs such as "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit." Singers Marty Balin and Mickey Thomas had stints on male lead vocals It was Freiberg who gave the band its last Top 20 hit in 1979 "It was about my girlfriend," Freiberg said "I was sitting at a soundcheck or something and I had these changes I was making ‘I’m thinking of writing a song for you to sing.’ And he said "And then he quit the band before we ever got it finished,'" Freiberg said but kind of thought it should rock and asked [lead guitarist] Craig Chaquico — he was the youngest in the band and I knew he listened to hard rockers “And he came over and he heard it and he said ‘I know just what to do.’ And we put it together and it was his arrangement But the band's tendency to splinter caught up to Freiberg by 1984 "I left because what they needed was somebody who was a whiz-bang keyboard player and I’m a songwriting keyboard player," he said “I couldn’t do what somebody would want me to do — it would be beyond me technically And you got plenty of singers — you got Grace "And so we mutually decided I should leave and Slick and Thomas transitioned Jefferson Starship into Starship 1 hits with "We Built This City" and "Sara" in 1985 "I left right before they dropped the ‘Jefferson,’" Freiberg said when they dropped the ‘Jefferson,’ just after Paul left “And I just started going on other ways into music Kantner resurrected Jefferson Starship in 1992 and the band continued to have a rotating lineup “Marty would be in it sometimes and Jack Casady was in it for a while and Papa John [Creach] was in it till he passed away," Freiberg said "And even Grace was there for one or two gigs She hasn’t played now for way over 30 years “And he asked me to come sit in when they played close to where I live and I sat in and did a couple of songs and it was fun You want to do a couple of gigs down the coast the reformed Jefferson Starship “kept adding people," Freiberg said it seemed magical to all of us," Freiberg said And all of a sudden we looked around and said Freiberg said that when Kantner died in 2016 Jefferson Starship released just its third album since re-forming "We have a bunch of songwriters in the band great musicians and we just jammed," Freiberg said "We brought it to the studio I’m actually calling you from — I have a small setup — and just started jamming "We actually went into the big studio when we managed to find some time when we weren’t playing and did the tracks for ‘Mother of the Sun.’" Freiberg said part of the motivation was the song "What Are We Waiting For." ‘What are we waiting for?’ And we had this one jam "And it’s kind of this anthem that everything is going wrong in the world — we really know what to do Freiberg said he expects Jefferson Starship will continue recording “We got a whole pile of songs that we haven’t gotten out yet," he said "And we have some more things that we’re working on — we never had a chance to finish them we’ll figure out how to be in the same place when we’re not touring,” he said He said he has no objections to Thomas now touring under the name Starship “I went and checked the band out when they were playing at the county fair near here It’s an irony that he produced these songs — I hope he doesn’t mind that we sing the songs in our act Asked whether Jefferson Starship will continue after he's gone ‘cause there’s a whole pile of good songs there "As long as people want to hear them — yeah But answering that is hard because he doesn't anticipate quitting Because I’ve never had more fun in my life.” Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy Volume 6 - 2024 | https://doi.org/10.3389/frwa.2024.1335766 Urban water contamination has become a pressing concern due to the surge in urbanization resulting in increased pollution levels and the introduction of emerging contaminants (ECs) into the environment The widespread use of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) driven by medical advancements and economic progress has led to their presence in aquatic systems posing risks to both ecosystems and human health These compounds are released into the environment via effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as they are inefficient in totally removing PhACs surface water and groundwater of a small city like Freiberg region in Germany Samples were collected along Münzbach’s path Analysis for the measurement of PhACs was conducted via Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) Results revealed that about 46 out of 54 analyzed PhACs were detected across matrices with positive findings of 46 substances in wastewater six of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) like atenolol (ATL) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) were focused in this study Five of the six APIs were present in all matrices with MET and CAF widely distributed in an aqueous system CBZ and DCF were found in wastewater and surface water It was observed that PhAC concentration was reduced from wastewater to groundwater decreasing as effluents flowed through surface water Münzbach and Freiberger Mulde It was also observed that the groundwater near the surface water shows the presence of APIs mainly due to the hyporheic zone connecting the surface water and groundwater PhAC compounds reflect the city population and their age and the hydrochemical processes of the compounds themselves They found that the concentration of the selected compounds was highest (μg/L) at the sampling point near the floodgate compared to the other points They also conclude that the active substances were influenced by the water yield and flow rate generated by floodgates showing higher concentrations All the above studies are conducted either on a large city having good infrastructure huge population or on big rivers or porous aquifers studies on PhAC contamination in the aqueous system of small-town cities with minimum facilities and population and the groundwater having poor interconnecting pores have not yet been studied in detail The objective of this study is to evaluate the occurrence of PhACs in the urban water system of the Freiberg region in Germany including very small key ponds and a river that flows through the city the investigation aims to uncover the sources and potential interactions of PhACs within a small urban environment the water samples were systematically collected from various sources The collected water samples underwent analysis using ultra-high phase liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) Based on the results of major ion and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) data the nature and interaction of water matrices in the environment are discussed the research seeks to deepen our understanding of pharmaceutical contamination in the urban water system of the Freiberg area offering valuable insights into the characteristics and underlying factors associated with the presence of APIs in urban water matrices The Münzbach Valley near Loßnitz houses the Freiberg wastewater disposal facility This municipal WWTP serves the city of Freiberg and some suburban municipalities by two main sewers The Münzbach main sewer collects wastewater from the historic city center and the urban districts Zug around the districts of Freiberg—East and South the Saubach main sewer serves the districts of Freiberg-West and North which also encompass areas such as the community hospital and the Freiberg industrial estate The Saubach canal feeds into the Münzbach main sewer above the WWTP at the level of Möller Street Study area of Freiberg and collection points To investigate the water quality parameters and the contamination with trace compounds mentioned in Supplementary Table S3, 16 samples were collected within the study area (shown in Figure 1) during October 2021 from various water matrices The water samples originate from domestic wastewater and groundwater around the city of Freiberg which is subject to annual sampling lacks the analysis of trace compounds in the State Water Monitoring Network the analyses of water samples in this study represent the first examination for the detection of trace compounds The collection of samples for the various water matrices was carried out following the technical standards Wastewater samples were collected according to the procedure mentioned in DIN 34802-11 (02/2009) surface water samples followed DIN EN ISO 5667-6 (12/2016) procedure while groundwater matrix sampling referred to DIN 34802-13 (12/2021) Samples were taken after the fulfillment of hydrochemical and hydraulic criteria In the groundwater pumping a Honda WX 10 suction pump was used while a Grundfos submersible pump MP 1 alongside PVC pipes were used for GWM points whose water level exceeds 8 meters composition regarding cations and anions two water samples were taken from each measuring point sealed within 30 mL polypropylene bottles on-site sample preparation was conducted for the separation of suspended solids and organics using membrane filters with a pore size of 0.45 μm made of cellulose acetate Wastewater samples required secondary laboratory treatment due to high-suspended matter content To prevent trivalent iron and heavy metal precipitation samples were acidified with concentrated nitric acid in the field before cation examination the water samples were collected in narrow-necked amber borosilicate glass bottles without filtration The internal standards used for calibration and analysis of the active compounds are as follows: Atenolol D7 and Valsartan D3 all from Sigma-Aldrich ≥ 99% purity 1 mL of the water sample was combined with 20 μL of internal standard and introduced to the HPLC-MS/MS by direct injection of 10 μL The chromatographic separation of trace compounds was done by passing through the C18 column (Phenomenex Luna Omega 1.5 μm Polar C18) The separation was operated at 50°C oven temperature while the injection volume was 50 μL The eluent A was water and 2 mM/L ammonium formate with 0.01% formic acid while eluent B consisted of methanol All the chemicals used here are of LC/MS grade The gradient method was used starting from 10% organic solvent (eluent B) for 0.5 min to 95% for 7 min 95% for 8.5 min and then ending with an initial situation of 10% for another 8.7 min The electrospray ionization (ESI) method was adopted with a spray voltage of 5.5 kV in positive mode Depending on the substance and material effects internal standards were employed for internal calibration and the quantification limit ranged between 10 and 50 ng/L To characterize the aqueous sample collected from different locations of Freiberg the study of physicochemical parameters was done on-site and in the laboratory as well as nitrite (0–4.05 mg/L) occur primarily at the Central WWTP Runoff in high concentrations characterizing the effective degradation of organic compounds by nitrification and denitrification in the wastewater treatment processes The wastewater samples examined can be regarded as characteristic based on the examined parameters as well as the occurrence and concentration of the described water constituents The ion balances vary highly from −35.4% to +9.6% due to the heterogeneous composition and origin of the wastewater streams The levels of nitrate (1.4–25 mg/L) and nitrite (0–1.9 mg/L) are also elevated The main sources of chemicals in the surface waters in the study area are mainly due to the wastewater effluent and the leaching of agricultural land fluoride is detected in high contents with values reaching 5.2 mg/L The waters show average mineralization for magnesium (8–73 mg/L) and potassium (3–18 mg/L) Bicarbonate (15–45 mg/L) occurs only in low concentrations in the geogenic background of the silicate aquifer contribute to elevated sulfate and fluoride levels due to smelting from sulfide ores and the use of fluorspar in metallurgical processes Landfills in the study area containing excavation rock and slag from mining processes are closely associated with groundwater monitoring points (GWM) in and around Freiberg emphasizing the lasting impact of mining on groundwater chemistry Increased concentrations of ammonium (0–3.9 mg/L) and nitrate (13–53 mg/L) along with manganese (0–11 mg/L) suggest anaerobic and reducing conditions in groundwater The predominantly negative ion balance is attributed to the absence of heavy metals The basis of that distinct relationship is the prevalent major ions relationship (Na+ originating mainly from private households The input of these ions in the aquatic environment occurs through wastewater effluent leading to imprecise disparities between the facies of these water matrices The explicit effect of the wastewater matrix on surface water is evident in the transition from water type G2 to E2 attributed to higher concentrations of alkaline-earth ions in the downstream watercourses The observed influence of reclaimed waters on specific watercourses emphasizes the connection of these water matrices and highlights the effect of human activities on water quality Extensive dilution processes are evident from the mixing of different discharges in the Freiberger Mulde River underscoring the complex interactions between wastewater Ion equivalent ratios of all water samples and facies clusters by matrices The collected water samples were analyzed using UHPLC-MS/MS for the occurrence of trace compounds. Almost in all the measuring points, trace PhACs are observed. Concerning the APIs, 46 of the 54 active substances analyzed were detected in the samples taken. The positive findings in the wastewater stream, surface water and groundwater are found to be 46, 37 and 19 active substances, respectively as shown in Supplementary Tables S4, S5 The contents determined vary significantly depending on the origin of the waters While the surface water unaffected by wastewater effluent analyzed the API concentrations between 110 ng/L (SWM 32901) and 1,333 ng/L (SWM 31500) in the study area Total contaminations of less than 100 ng/L were detected in groundwater samples the total levels vary between 50 ng/L (GWM Silberhof Street) and 168 ng/L (GWM Metallurgic Waste Dump) Showcasing the antihypertensive drug atenolol (0–87 ng/L) antidiabetic drug metformin (0–16.4 ng/L) antiepileptic carbamazepine (0–14.5 ng/L) as well as several contrast agents were present in the groundwater Total concentration of pharmaceuticals present at each measuring point and groundwater (GW) selected in the Freiberg region significant removal of trace compounds from the wastewater inflow was observed indicating the effectivity and selectivity of the WWTP in Freiberg the residues of PhACs in the wastewater effluent are still high which might be harmful to aquatic life and humans the wastewater-influenced measuring points show the highest concentrations for the selected APIs Each examined pharmaceutical substance can also be quantified in groundwater The contamination in the groundwater matrices by the selected APIs amounts to approximately 10% of the measured concentration in wastewater without affecting the surface water 5 of the 6 selected APIs occur in all matrices MET and CAF can be detected in almost every water sample examined The PhAC substances CBZ and DCF are primarily present in wastewater and surface water ATL is rarely found in surface water and SMX was not detected in the groundwater matrix In the following, input and occurrence of the individual APIs are described. Figure 4 and Table 3 give an overview of each selected active pharmaceutical substance according to the water matrices given Concentration of selected active pharmaceuticals in wastewater (WW) surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) matrices of Freiberg The parent substance is limited to lower concentrations (0–35 ng/L) when wastewater enters the river This is likely due to the high solubility of ATL in water that decreases the concentration of the parent compound on dilution the concentration of ATL (0–87 ng/L) exceeds surface water values showing no significant relation with the contaminants in surface water The prescription antiepileptic drug CBZ is mainly used for psychiatric disorders, partial seizures or trigeminal neuralgia. Its adsorption in the body is very slow and enters the aquatic environment primarily by domestic wastewater (Moya-Llamas et al., 2021) This can also be observed by the detection value which shows a high concentration of CBZ in the sewage system (406–561 ng/L) as compared to the hospital drainage (5.5 ng/L) The extended half-life (>100 days) and low biodegradability result in minimal elimination of CBZ during the treatment of wastewater even higher concentrations (738 ng/L) relative to the inflow (561 ng/L) were detected the concentration of CBZ in WWTP runoff (738 ng/L) gets diluted and decreased to 248.2 ng/L (SWM 32896) with further decreasing to 111 ng/L (SWM 32900) The leaving stream of the Freiberger Mulde affected by wastewater effluent shows a concentration of 28 ng/L while the unaffected receiving water concentration is 16.6 ng/L (SWM 31500) among all the groundwater matrices only one measuring point shows a CBZ concentration of 14.5 ng/L The positive detection of CBZ in this GWM point is likely due to the transport through the hyporheic zone that connects the surface water (SWM 31500) with the groundwater Elevated concentrations (119–881 ng/L) of DCF were detected in the downstream (119–881 ng/L) and even in the unaffected watercourses (0–74 ng/L) the detection of DCF is also limited to one GWM point near the surface water with a concentration of 8.3 ng/L leading to a decrease in the concentration of MET from 2.15 mg/L (Central Runoff Hospital) to 0.28 mg/L (Wastewater Inspection Shaft) Due to the very low concentrations at the central WWTP runoff (7,345 ng/L) an almost holistic elimination or degradation by conventional treatment can be suspected The concentration of MET after WWTP discharge is decreased and observed to be around 2,670 to 480 ng/L In addition to this significant amount of MET (231 ng/L) is also observed in upstream of the river unaffected by the WWTP Despite having a higher concentration of MET in the surface water a low concentration in the groundwater was detected from 0.9 to 16.4 ng/L mainly used in veterinary medicine for treating urinary tract infections and pneumonia shows very few positive results within the Freiberg aquatic environment Environmental input predominantly originates from the hospital drainage (401 ng/L) The concentrations of SMX in the sewage system remain consistently lower (0–181 ng/L) Elimination rates in the Freiberg WWTP can only be estimated due to the highly variable concentrations in the wastewater stream The lack of analyses for relevant metabolites of SMX prevents its further degradation assessment A decrease in concentration can be stated compared to the WWTP runoff (73 ng/L) SMX was also detected in surface water affected by wastewater effluent (3.2–41 ng/L) The occurrence within the groundwater matrix could not be established The presence of pharmaceutical residues in wastewater effluent and surface water poses a harmful impact on aquatic life and humans Nowadays the consumption of PhACs in society has increased and some medicine shows a negative impact on their health improper collection of these medicines creates water pollution Our WWTPs are also not designed to treat PhACs completely leaving some residues in the effluent the effluent water is discharged directly into the surface water This study presents a thorough investigation into the presence of APIs in the aquatic environment of a small town 46 PhACs were detected in the aqueous system of Freiberg and all 46 were detected in the wastewater system and SMX selected based on their consumption and occurrence ATL and CBZ are likely released through wastewater effluent with a minor contribution from hospital effluent for CBZ The calculated elimination rates of the selected APIs vary significantly between the central inflow and runoff of the WWTP in Freiberg whereas CAF and MET exhibit almost complete elimination (95%–97%) and SMX undergo moderate degradation (40%–67%) the former sewage waters enter the aquatic environment as reclaimed water through nearby watercourses These compounds once released as wastewater effluent are diluted/degraded showing a comprehensive network of hydraulic pathways from wastewater and surface water to groundwater likely to form a closed loop ATL exhibits a noteworthy presence in three groundwater samples indicating significant transport through cracks and fissures DCF and SMX also show releases through wastewater effluent and small amounts through hospital waste CAF is released significantly from hospital waste and wastewater effluent and is found in nearly all groundwater samples around milligrams per liter for the MET compound was detected in the wastewater The reason behind the high concentration is the consumption of MET which is primarily used to treat diabetes in Freiberg’s aging population Entry pathways into the sewage system vary for different compounds with domestic wastewater predominantly contributing to ATL community hospital runoff is a significant source of SMX Compound concentrations in wastewater range from ng/L to μg/L decreasing in surface and groundwater samples suggesting a consistent distribution trend during flow This study shows that surface water is having a huge impact from wastewater effluent that is inefficient in treating PhACs completely we observed a concentration of ng/L to μg/L of PhACs residues that will increase in the coming year if not taken into account we observed scattered contamination of APIs in groundwater likely due to the fractured aquifer having fewer interconnecting pores APIs with good biodegradability and short half-lives exhibit significantly higher concentrations compared to persistent compounds like CBZ and DCF Groundwater predominantly contains individual APIs in low double-digit ng concentrations with rapidly degradable APIs suggesting a potential inflow of freshwater into the aquifer Potential preferential flow paths in the area include leakage within the sewage system and dynamic interactions in the hyporheic zone we can say that the release of trace compounds is influenced by various factors water connectivity treatment plant efficiency necessitating further investigation into water quality parameters to comprehend the release of PhACs into the environment The original
