Maxi Eggestein put Freiburg ahead with his second Bundesliga goal of the season
England captain Harry Kane has won the first major trophy of his career after Bayern Munich were confirmed as Bundesliga champions
The Bavarian giants secured their 12th title in 13 years as last year's winners Bayer Leverkusen relinquished their grip on the trophy with a draw at Freiburg
Xabi Alonso's side needed to win to delay Bayern's celebration for another week
but had to settle for a point despite a two-goal comeback to deny their Champions League-chasing hosts
Maxi Eggestein opened the scoring with a thumping strike from 25 yards a minute before half-time and a Piero Hincapie own goal doubled fourth-placed Freiburg's lead three minutes after the break
Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz pulled one back eight minutes from time for Leverkusen and Jonathan Tah netted a 93rd-minute equaliser when Nathan Tella's cross went in off the defender's shoulder
But was not enough to extend the title race as they sit eight points behind Bayern with two games left
Vincent Kompany's side all but confirmed a record-extending 34th German championship with a 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday
who has scored 24 Bundesliga goals in 29 games
it is a first team trophy in 15 seasons since making his professional debut
The 31-year-old has had a number of near misses with both former club Tottenham
with whom he reached the Champions League final in 2019
and England - losing in the finals of the European Championships in 2021 and 2024
But now Kane can add a Bundesliga winners' medal to a host of individual prizes

Bayern Munich winning the league appears to be inevitable..
Bayern Munich needs a slip-up from Bayer Leverkusen to clinch the Bundesliga title today
so the players and staff have gathered to watch the match
“Many will meet today and watch [Freiburg vs Leverkusen] together,” sporting director Christoph Freund told Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia)
Sport Bild’s Christian Falk confirmed the news as well (via @iMiaSanMia):
Bayern players and their families are invited at the Käfer restaurant in Munich today to watch Freiburg against Leverkusen and celebrate the title if it’s officially secured
Bild’s Heiko Niedderer captured some of the players going into the restaurant:

Leverkusen needed to win on Sunday to maintain any mathematical chances of claiming the title after Bayern drew 3-3 at RB Leipzig on Saturday
battling to secure a spot in next season's Champions League
came out fighting with Leverkusen nowhere to be seen
The hosts scored with Maximilian Eggestein's slightly deflected shot in the 44th minute and were in complete control
Freiburg struck again four minutes after the restart with Leverkusen's Piero Hincapié turning the ball into his own net for an own goal after a goal mouth scramble
Leverkusen left their comeback until very late and they cut the deficit with a Florian Wirtz solo effort and superb finish in the 82nd
Jonathan Tah then levelled in stoppage time to set up a dramatic finale
But despite equalling a league record with their 33rd Bundesliga away game without defeat
Leverkusen could not find a third goal in the dying minutes
Sunday's result left last season's champions in second place on 68 points
with Bayern on 76 and sealing their record-extending 33rd Bundesliga title since the introduction of the top league in 1963
"Congratulations to Bayern," said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso
who last season led his team to a domestic league and cup double
"I always tell my players that a 2-0 is dangerous
After Flo's (Wirtz) goal we had a chance and Jonathan Tah made it 2-2
Obviously the feelings are mixed today," said the Spaniard
who all gathered in Munich to watch Leverkusen's game together

Harry Kane's trophy curse is finally broken as Bayern Munich have clinched the Bundesliga title after Bayer Leverkusen's 2-2 draw with Freiburg
A small championship party has been scheduled should Leverkusen fail to beat Freiburg this afternoon
Bayern Munich's sporting director revealed the information to Abendzeitung earlier today
“Many players will meet today and watch the game together,” Freund explained
Although the Bavarians practically have a hand on the Meisterschale already
it is not mathematically conclusive just yet
anything other than a win would officially grant Bayern the title with two games to spare.
No striker is immune to a goal drought, and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane proved no different
The England captain had failed to score from open play from mid-November to Bayern’s recent 2-1 win over SC Freiburg
But that does not mean he has not been at work
“I do a lot of video indeed. I watch my movements, what I could have done differently,” Kane explained in a January interview for L’Équipe, as captured by @iMiaSanMia
“I think it’s very important to continue to be in research
given the competitiveness of modern football
the staff is doing a remarkable job of presenting us with the opposition we will face
I often look more particularly at the defenders I will come up against
their movement zones and their way of defending.”
Perhaps that sort of insight was just what enabled Kane to spin away from his defender and score a stunning strike against Freiburg to finally break his open play scoring drought
The Europa-Park Stadion was the stage for perhaps the most meaningful game of the weekend as Champions League chasing SC Freiburg hosted a Leverkusen side requiring a win to keep their slim title ambitious alive
a draw would gift the Meisterschale to Bayern Munich
It took a while for this game to come to life as Die Werkself struggled to break down Freiburg's teak tough defence
Aside from two mistakes from Tah and Tapsoba which ought to have been punished
Max Rosenfelder's header from a Ritsu Dōan corner in the 30th-minute was the first clear attempt at goal
Matěj Kovář was required to act in the next attack as the 24-year-old closed the angle to parry Patrick Osterhage's effort.
the Breisgauers' midfielder was not to be deterred as he make it 1-0 just before the interval
Having skipped out of a duel with Buendia on the edge of the box
Osterhage took a touch before rocketing the ball past Kovář
Julian Schuster's men kicked off the second-half with a bang as they doubled their advantage
Johan Manzambi played a one-two with Ritsu Dōan who crossed the latter ball towards the back post
Manzambi managed to flick it across goal which Piero Hincapié turned into his own net under pressure from Adamu
Xabi Alonso turned to his bench after the hour mark as Amine Adli

Leverkusen clawed it back to 2-1 after Wirtz worked a give-and-go with Grimaldo to pick out the lower left corner from range in the 82nd-minute
Suddenly the reigning champions arose from their slumber and looked like their old selves
Nathan Tella delivered the ball to the front post where Jonathan Tah glanced pasta sprawling Florian Müller
A share of the spoils in the end but more importantly a result that crowns Bayern Munich as Bundesliga winners.

Harry Kane can finally celebrate his first career title after Bayern Munich became Bundesliga champion with a little help from Freiburg on Sunday
Freiburg drew with second-placed Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 to leave Bayern an unassailable eight points clear of the 2024 champion with two rounds of the German league remaining
The 31-year-old Kane had never won a title in a career of runner-up finishes and defeats in finals with Bayern

Freiburg will carry significant momentum into Sunday’s fixture after putting together a three-game winning run, which began with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. They went on to claim a 3-2 home win against Hoffenheim, before they edged out Wolfsburg via a 1-0 scoreline in last Saturday’s away clash.
Max Rosenfelder scored the decisive goal against die Wölfe to help extend Freiburg’s unbeaten away run to six matches (W4, D2). The win ensured Freiburg finished matchday 31 in fourth position, making it a little surprising that they have a negative goal difference.
They will still have work to do in their final three games against Leverkusen, Holstein Kiel and Frankfurt if they are to secure Champions League qualification for their first time in their history. Their hopes of claiming all three points on Sunday may be tempered by the fact they have not beaten Leverkusen since they claimed a 3-2 away win in September 2022, while they have not recorded a home victory since December 2021.
Freiburg are both unable to call upon the services of Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Bruno Ogbus due to knee and Achilles injuries respectively.
Leverkusen are all but guaranteed to lose their Bundesliga crown despite the fact Bayern Munich had to settle for a 3-3 draw in Saturday’s away clash with RB Leipzig. Die Werkself are sitting nine points adrift of the leaders with three games left to play, but the significant goal difference deficit means that it is a matter of time before the Bavarians clinch the title.
Xabi Alonso’s side can at least delay Bayern’s celebrations by a week if they claim all three points in Sunday’s meeting with Freiburg. They will carry a six-game unbeaten league run into the fixture after they extended that streak with a 2-0 win in last Saturday’s home clash against Augsburg, courtesy of goals from Patrik Schick and Emiliano Buendía.
Leverkusen may fancy their chances of picking up another victory on Sunday, given the fact they have won four of their previous five Bundesliga away matches. The visitors have also won each of their last three meetings with Freiburg, including in a commanding 5-1 victory in December’s reverse fixture.
The visitors are without Nordi Mukiele, Mario Hermoso, Jeanuël Belocian, Martin Terrier and Alejo Sarco due to injury.
With speculation growing that Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso could depart the club in summer
questions in his press conference for the Freiburg game started as you might expect
regarding his future before stating that he
Simon Rolfes and Fernando Carro enjoy “clarity” at all times between eachother.
Unbothered by murmurings of the club already conducting a search for his replacement
Alonso motored on with his presser by giving an update on squad fitness for the trip to Breisgau
""All players [who aren't out long term] are good [for Sunday's game] with the exception of [Victor] Boniface
After training yesterday he felt something in his thigh muscles
but [he's the only one in] doubt," he said
The Spaniard went on to discuss Jonas Hofmann's apparent frustration at his lack of playing time for Die Werkself in recent months
I try to make every player understand his situation
but I need to decide what I need and what's best for the team
I can understand that Jonas feels that way
it was a little more difficult for him [this season]
Freiburg 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Draw sees Bayern Munich clinch Bundesliga titleBayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions once again after second-placed Bayer Leverkusen drew with Freiburg on Sunday.Bayern Munich sealed their 34th Bundesliga crown after title rivals Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw away to Freiburg on Sunday.
Leverkusen knew a victory would be enough to delay Bayern's celebrations after Vincent Kompany's side drew 3-3 with RB Leipzig 24 hours earlier
And though able to salvage a point through Jonathan Tah's stoppage-time equaliser
on what was his 400th Leverkusen appearance
came out fighting but had to wait until the 44th minute to open the scoring.
Maximilian Eggestein's thunderous effort put them in front
with their lead doubled three minutes after the restart thanks to an own goal from Piero Hincapie.
Florian Wirtz pulled a goal back for Xabi Alonso's men with eight minutes to go
before Tah's header levelled the scores in the third minute of time added on.
Leverkusen finally relinquished their crown after winning the title during the last campaign and will end their season without a trophy
Bayern now have an unassailable eight-point lead over Leverkusen with two games of the campaign remaining.
Data Debrief: Leverkusen equal unbeaten away record
Despite the disappointment of officially losing the title
Leverkusen were able to continue their impressive away form
equalling a Bundesliga record in the process.
Alonso's team are now unbeaten in their last 33 league games away from home
matching Bayern's record that they set between 2012 and 2014.
It wasn't a particularly impressive performance from Leverkusen
They ended the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 0.33 from just five shots.
SC Freiburg settled for a 2–2 draw at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Matchday 32 after goals from Maximilian Eggestein (44’) and Piero Hincapie (48’) were cancelled out late on
When the final whistle blew at the Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday evening
there was a palpable sense of frustration around the ground
SC Freiburg had come within touching distance of beating the still-reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen after a tireless team performance
only to see a hard-earned victory slip away in the dying moments
there was just one change to the starting XI
whose hopes of catching Bayern at the top had become purely mathematical following the Munich side’s draw in Leipzig
rotated in three positions: Jeremie Frimpong
Evenly-matched start “We need strong individual performances,” said Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster ahead of the game
The support in our last home game was incredible
We need that again.” And the fans duly responded
creating a ferocious atmosphere ahead of kick-off
the home side got stuck in from the outset against the league’s second-placed side
With the visitors assuming early control of possession
and both defences snuffing out any early attacks
the opening phase was well-balanced and lacking clear-cut chances
Goals on either side of the half put Freiburg ahead After a quiet first half hour
Max Rosenfelder sent a headed effort narrowly over the crossbar in the 29th minute
before Patrick Osterhage passed up a golden opportunity moments later after being slipped through one-on-one against Kovar (35’).
momentum had clearly shifted in favour of the home side
Their support was duly rewarded when a loose clearance fell to the feet of Maximilian Eggestein
and the midfielder rocketed a thunderous strike into the bottom corner to give Freiburg a deserved 1-0 lead at the break (44’).
The crowd was cheering again shortly after the restart
picking out Ritsu Doan in the middle before charging into the box to head the ball into a threatening position – it was eventually forced over the line by Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié (48’)
The timing of the goals couldn’t have been better
who struggled to create anything meaningful in the immediate aftermath
but they also inspired Freiburg to keep pressing at high intensity and force more mistakes from the visitors
Late double blow denies the win With 20 minutes left on the clock
Leverkusen had yet to register a single shot on target
largely thanks to Freiburg’s tireless defensive efforts
the hosts passed up several opportunities to finish off the game on the counter
setting the game up for a nervy finale.
Schuster’s XI threw their all into every challenge and loose ball to see out the two-goal lead
But their heroic efforts would go unrewarded
Florian Wirtz carried the ball through midfield and
rifled in a long-range strike off the inside of the post to halve the deficit (82’)
Jonathan Tah completed the comeback deep in stoppage time
rising to meet a cross with a powerful header – Bayer’s second shot on target (90+3’)
After the initial disappointment at the final whistle
the home crowd at Europa-Park Stadion was back on its feet
Freiburg’s European hopes are very much alive after securing a valuable point that sees them finish the matchday fourth in the table
Freiburg travel to Holstein Kiel next Saturday (15:30 CEST) for the final away match of the season
before closing out the campaign at home to Eintracht Frankfurt the following week.

though nine of his 24 goals were penalties
Only Leverkusen’s Patrick Schick has scored more from play (19) than Guirassy (17)
The Guinea star’s second goal settled his team
Adeyemi duly scored Dortmund’s third in the 69th and grabbed another four minutes later
Dortmund’s fourth straight win across all competitions lifted the team to fourth place
the last for Champions League qualification
Freiburg will hope to reclaim it on Sunday
There was another spectacle at Borussia Mönchengladbach where Hoffenheim drew 4-4
Union Berlin came from two goals down to draw with Werder Bremen 2-2
Pauli 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Nick Woltemade
who earlier had a penalty saved by Nikola Vasilj
Pauli finished with nine players with Siebe Van der Heyden sent off for a second yellow card for conceding the penalty
followed by Vasilj with two yellow cards in quick succession in stoppage time for complaining
along with a 30-goal difference to Bayern Munich
They still sought to control the early possession, but ultimately looked despondent compared to a spirited Freiburg side
who tested Matej Kovar through Vincenzo Grifo’s long-range drive
It turned out to be a half of very few chances
Patrick Osterhage was thwarted by the onrushing Kovar on the breakaway
before Freiburg seized the advantage on the stroke of half-time in stunning fashion
Maximilian Eggestein received it well outside the area
fired a powerful dipping strike into the near top corner to give his side the lead at the interval
Match statsFlashscoreAnd things got worse for last season’s champions just moments after the break when Johan Manzambi headed Ritsu Doan’s lobbed cross down into the six-yard box, where Junior Adamu pressured Piero Hincapie enough to coerce the Ecuadorian to prod into his own net
Freiburg proceeded to break down nearly everything that their opponents threw at them, but the previously ineffective Florian Wirtz came inside from the left and picked out the bottom-left corner to halve the deficit with eight minutes to play
Even though they had played poorly, Xabi Alonso’s side can never be written off. Nathan Tella sent in a cross from the left during stoppage time, and Jonathan Tah leapt in to glance in a header on his 400th appearance for the club
The point still sees Freiburg retain fourth place
while Leverkusen managed to just about extend their remarkable unbeaten away league run to 35 matches
the result does finally spell an end to Die Werkself’s title defence
meaning Bayern will lift a 12th title from the last 13 seasons and Harry Kane will finally crown his distinguished career with a maiden major trophy

SC Freiburg host Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the Europa-Park Stadion on matchday 32 at 17:30 CEST
The start of May is the time of year when football fans start calculating possible scenarios as the Bundesliga season draws to a close

Following last weekend’s win in Wolfsburg and ahead of this Sunday’s home game against Leverkusen
Julian Schuster’s team could still finish third but also as low as 10th
the SC coach hasn’t been studying the table and the possibilities for the final three matchdays
matchdays 33 and 34 are totally irrelevant right now
“I’m open to hearing why we should be focusing on the rest of the season already

SC played well for a part of the reverse fixture

“We put in a decent first-half performance but then went 1-0 down just before half-time
You need to have positive moments if you want to take something from matches against teams like that
The team is definitely committed towards improving,” said Schuster
Schuster has a number of difficult decisions to make for the penultimate home game of the season
Small things like our tactical approach and the opposition can be key in my decision as to who gets the nod.” Although goalkeeper Noah Atubolu is back in training and will be back in the squad as well
Florian Müller will remain in between the sticks for Sunday’s match
The supporters at the Europa-Park Stadion will also play a big part in the clash with Leverkusen: “The support was incredible in our last home game

Japan attacker Ritsu Doan scored his ninth goal of the season in Freiburg's 3-2 home win over Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga on Saturday
while Holstein Kiel's Shuto Machino and Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma in England both bagged their eighth goals of the campaign
Doan gave his side a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute at Europa-Park Stadion with a low strike into the corner from 20 meters out
He also stood out by providing key passes in the buildup to Lucas Holer's 28th-minute opener from inside the box and 57th-minute tap-in winner
Hoffenheim leveled through close-range strikes from Marius Bulter and Andrej Kramaric
But Freiburg secured three points and sit fifth on 48 points
a place and point off the Champions League qualification spot with four games left
"I'm not feeling the pressure that I have to score more
I'm just thinking about helping the team," said Doan as he nears double figures in goals
Forward Machino helped bottom club Kiel secure a creditable 1-1 draw away to fourth-place Leipzig
firing home a 44th-minute opener by completing a fine counter involving four players that began with Kiel goalkeeper Thomas Dahne
Benjamin Sesko leveled for Leipzig in the 74th minute but Kiel claimed a precious point in a battle for survival as they sit three points off 16th
"I was intent on sprinting behind the opposing defense
A goal has finally arrived," said Machino after netting for the first time since January
I want to score and make the team win games."
Brighton's Mitoma is enjoying his most productive season in the Premier League as his goal in a 4-2 defeat at Brentford saw him better his seven goals from his debuting 2022-23 campaign
Mitoma came on in the 65th minute soon after Joao Pedro was sent off for Brighton and cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 81st minute when the winger rolled home with his left foot off Jack Hinshelwood's through ball
But the visitors failed to mount a further comeback and conceded late on instead

those of us who like to live vicariously through romantic stories in football have enjoyed a grand old time thanks to a couple of outposts
It's unfair to label both cities as outposts
there is a depressing tendency from media decision-makers to view everything through the prism of the big club
My counterargument is always: If we only pay attention to the biggest and the best and don't spend the time painting a broader picture
we're surely boxing ourselves into a very narrow corner of interest
Don't we desire higher ratings for other clubs
So this is my latest attempt to redress that balance and reflect the German football mood music
Freiburg is to me a somewhat magical place
situated in a delightful part of the Bundesrepublik with ample greenery surrounding it as well as the sheer
imposing beauty of the Schwarzwald (Black Forest)
This encourages a culture that emphasises outdoor activities
You feel ensconced in the heart of the very best of Europe with France and Switzerland close by
It would be fair to say as football clubs go
I've heard fans of multiple clubs in recent years wish die Breisgauer (Breisgau is the region Freiburg is situated in) nothing but the best
A lot of that had to do with the presence -- for more than a decade -- of beloved coach Christian Streich
who embodied Freiburg in his manner of speech while serving as an important social conscience for the German football public with his humane
took the reins last summer and it was no surprise that he made a point of speaking up for democracy and impressing upon his players the importance of voting in Sunday's Bundestagswahl (parliamentary election)
82.5% of the population eligible to vote in Germany did so
a figure that compares favourably with the United States' 63.9% voter turnout
Commentating as I was on Freiburg's Friday night game under the lights against Werder Bremen, I had in my head that this was likely to be a low-scoring game. Freiburg, after three successive 1-0 wins, have mastered parsimony to get them into, almost astonishingly, a potential UEFA Champions League place
My co-commentator Sebastian Kneissl suggested to me prior to kickoff that Freiburg would play their usual waiting game and allow Bremen
who had lost two in a row and gone decidedly off the boil
This is precisely what transpired and set pieces were to play a huge part
For starters, a Fallrückzieher (bicycle kick goal) of quality from Kiliann Sildillia following a Vincenzo Grifo corner
Oh, and in the middle of the storyline, Freiburg goalkeeper and local lad Noah Atubolu saved his fourth consecutive spot kick
The ultimate margin of 5-0 represented Freiburg's joint-biggest home win in Bundesliga history
thus rubber-stamping their Champions League credentials
Vincenzo Grifo scored twice in last Friday's commanding win over Werder Bremen. Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty ImagesThey continue to know who they are
not much has changed since Streich's departure last summer
Schuster favours a back four as opposed to Streich's preferred three
but the club still works as it has for years
bringing through players from the area and ably run on the sporting front by Jochen Saier and Klemens Hartenbach
Freiburg have enjoyed seven seasons in European competition before, but never in the Champions League. Their next two games against direct rivals for the top four, Mainz and RB Leipzig
will have a big say in their quest to make history
ironically a year on from the legendary Streich's exit
You're talking 400 miles or around six hours north on the Autobahn to get to Ostwestfalen-Lippe
The city features in a comedic conspiracy dating back to the 1970s that all Germans know: Bielefeld
26,500-capacity Bielefelder Alm (the Bielefeld pasture) knows this not to be true
The official name is the Schüco Arena but it will never not be die Alm
a thick forest now part of a substantial hiking trail
Bielefeld remains synonymous with a battle waged in 9 A.D
when the chieftain Arminius and his army defeated the supposedly better-resourced and organised Roman army
Actual history could almost be a metaphor for what the 3
Liga side have achieved in the DFB-Pokal this season

Ahead of Tuesday's quarterfinal against Werder Bremen (yes, they feature in this part of the narrative too!), Bielefeld have eliminated higher-division opposition in each round of the competition so far: Hannover from the 2. Bundesliga and then Union Berlin and Freiburg (!) in back-to-back-to-back rounds
It evoked memories of 2014-2015 when die Arminia, also a third-division side at the time, reeled off Pokal coups against Bundesliga clubs Hertha Berlin, Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach before losing to VfL Wolfsburg in the last four
Tuesday night was one of my favourite commentary experiences of the season
Die Alm rocked and swayed with vigour as the teams came out
The noise level simply never dipped as the home fans -- who watched their team suffer two straight demotions in 2022 and 2023 -- made themselves a character in the captivating drama
A 30-year-old American was another prominent character. Bielefeld captain Mael Corboz -- born in Alabama
raised in New Jersey by French-born parents and now a resident in Germany for almost a decade -- has spent his career toiling away at the coal face of lower-league football
virtually unknown to the growing football fan base in the U.S
Corboz tenaciously played the skipper's part perfectly and never shirked a challenge against technically superior opponents
Bielefeld knew they would have to outrun and outwork Bremen
When 20-year-old Marius Wörl opened the scoring with a long-range belter, the Bielefeld fans in the noisy Südtribüne (South Stand) began to dream again. When a typical Pokal-Kacktor (an ugly goal), in this case an own-goal by Bremen's Julian Malatini went in for 2-0
has a word for a goal that gets you back within a goal)
It remained 2-1 to Bielefeld when their former player Amos Pieper powerfully headed the ball off the crossbar in added time. We all thought Bielefeld has sealed it for sure when the aptly named Sam Schreck (the word "schreck" means "fright" or "scare" in German) found the net
only for the goal to be annulled due to a prior foul
after more than eight minutes of added time
die Alm had witnessed one of its greatest nights
There's an old saying that der Pokal hat seine eigenen Gesetze (the Pokal has its own laws) and the genius in the format is that Bielefeld
are guaranteed another home draw in the semifinals
there are no neutral-venue games outside of the final
no sending outmatched lower-tier clubs to be the away team
Bielefeld will host either defending Pokalsieger Leverkusen, 2022 and 2023 winners Leipzig or three-time victors VfB Stuttgart. All will be revealed when the draw is made at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on Sunday.
Who wouldn't want to be at the Bielefelder Alm in early April? No matter who lifts the Pott on May 31 in Berlin, this will always go down as the season of Bielefeld in the Pokal.
Thanks to Freiburg and Bielefeld, we're reminded that Germany is a decentralised country where football means local community. The biggest clubs aren't always the story.
The Bavarians were eager to make amends following Wednesday's shock 3-0 loss to Feyenoord in the Champions League that put their automatic qualification for the round of 16 at risk
They have now won all four of the league games this year and are on 48 points, six ahead of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen who let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at RB Leipzig
"I knew this game would not be easy so what happened here today was not strange," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany told a news conference
"Overall it was a tough week with three games for us
Maybe it was not our prettiest game but it was a good win because this Freiburg team at home is very tough to beat."
"We can't change the story in Rotterdam but we could influence the story today and that was our only focus
There is no success or titles without such moments."
Kompany's team started well, hitting the post through Jamal Musiala before Bundesliga top scorer Kane put them in front in the 15th minute after a stunning turn on the edge of the box and a low drive for his 17th goal of the campaign
Kane had combined with Eric Dier to score
making this the first time two Englishmen have linked up for a goal in the Bundesliga since records started in 2004-05
Bayern defender Kim headed in at the near post from a corner nine minutes after the restart to make it 2-0 but it was far from over with the visitors easing off
Freiburg pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through Matthias Ginter's header and went on the attack
carving out several chances for an equaliser but could not avoid a third straight league loss as they dropped to ninth in the table
