Hunter Friesen hopes his unique YouTube videos inspire a new wave of content creators within the hockey world. (Photo by Daniella Trujillo/Cronkite News)
TEMPE — The life of an athlete is quite different from that of a regular college student
young adults must also adhere to strict training regimens to stay in peak shape
It’s a routine that most people don’t fully understand
mainly due to a lack of exposure and insight into the day-to-day life of a collegiate athlete
these stories are being unearthed more and more
Over 60% of adults aged 18-29 use popular content creation platforms like Instagram
One athlete who began using social media to share his experiences is Hunter Friesen
a freshman forward on Arizona State’s Division I club hockey team who posts his content on a personal YouTube channel
and there’s not many creators out there that film that stuff,” Friesen said
“So I’m kind of trying to be that guy to showcase that lifestyle and whatever that comes with.”
Accruing over 3,200 subscribers and 290,000 views on YouTube less than two years since creating his channel
it’s safe to say that viewers are intrigued by Friesen’s story
Through YouTube videos, ASU freshman Hunter Friesen brings to light the experiences and routines of athletes as a member of the club hockey team. (Photo by Daniella Trujillo/Cronkite News)
Like most college and professional players
Friesen began his hockey career at a young age
Manitoba native left home to play in various elite programs and leagues
the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League — the latter two being Canadian Junior “A” leagues
the best available below-major junior leagues that host Canada’s most elite prospects
during his time with the United States Premier Hockey League Premier’s Richmond Generals
Friesen’s content creation career took off
his brother and friends were set to take a 10-day trip to Costa Rica
which provided him a good reason to bring a camera
“I’ve kind of always wanted to start (recording videos),” Friesen said
“That was just a little excuse to start and kind of film that trip with my best friends
Friesen bought a Sony Alpha 6400 — a more advanced camera than the one he previously had — to shoot his videos and began documenting his life as a junior hockey player
So it was only natural that when he decided to commit to ASU’s club hockey team
he would bring his camera along to capture a new chapter in his career
While the Sun Devils field an NCAA Division I hockey squad that competes against some of the nation’s best programs
they also have three levels of club teams that compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association
an organization of over 461 colleges and 13,000 players across the United States and Canada
There are a few main differences between the NCAA and ACHA
namely that the former allows scholarships while the latter does not
“We’re getting most of our kids out of junior hockey
which is 16-to-20-year-olds,” ASU Division I coach Austin Cline said
“Where we’re getting those guys is Junior A leagues in Canada and throughout the U.S
We’re fully funded by the player dues and different fundraising.”
the workload required of club hockey players is nonetheless quite rigorous
this means three on-ice practices and two workouts per week throughout a 32-game season
Due to the sheer amount of time spent around the rink and teammates
giving outsiders a look into the club hockey grind was a no-brainer for Friesen
In addition to showing great promise in his first season in Tempe
he’s been able to capture several fun aspects of playing in the ACHA
Friesen has posted videos about his team’s raucous rivalry game against Arizona and a trip to Chicago for the 2023 Chicago Classic
a four-day event that saw ASU face club teams from across the nation
are in addition to videos about his day-to-day life as a student-athlete
Hunter Friesen’s YouTube venture began with a 10-day trip to Costa Rica, where discovered a passion for content creation. (Photo by Daniella Trujillo/Cronkite News)
suddenly being in front of a camera was initially jarring for some of Freisen’s peers
thanks to the freshman’s lighthearted personality
his teammates and coaches alike were supportive of him archiving their experience
“It was a weird and awkward thing,” freshman forward Carter Newlin said
But I think when everyone bought in and was just like
it’s just another way for us to become closer and a better hockey team,’ I think it really did benefit us
and we have fun with it and it’s really cool
Friesen aims to eventually play professional hockey while continuing to hone his craft behind a camera
as the film industry has ample financial opportunity
he wants to shed some more light on the hockey world
a sphere he called an “unhit market” due to the lack of content creators involved with the sport
hockey is played around the world and is a sport that many people enjoy and have connections to
By posting his own experience of playing competitive hockey
Friesen’s channel can be used as a springboard to inspire more behind-the-scenes content in the hockey world
“I know a couple creators out there that do hockey
“I get a lot of (direct messages of) people wanting to start videoing themselves (on) YouTube or Tiktok

The two hours my 12-year-old son and I recently spent marveling at the wingspan of a vulture soaring overhead
laughing at playful monkeys and hand-feeding deer and goats was an ideal way to make the most of a sunny spring day in southwestern Germany
Those experiences were among the highlights of our trip to Freisen Nature Wildlife Park
a rambling menagerie in the German state of Saarland about 15 minutes from the Army’s garrison in Baumholder and less than 40 minutes by car from Kaiserslautern
since there’s plenty of opportunity to interact with the animals
many of whom are freely roaming around the 62.5-acre park
Animal food pellets in brown paper bags are for sale at the admissions kiosk for 1.50 euros each
I’d recommend buying a bag or two for close encounters with the hungry critters around the park’s approximately 1.2-mile circular walking path
My son fed the Valais Blackneck mountain goats from Switzerland
their shaggy fur divided about mid-belly between black and white
The most fun was giving handouts to the free-roaming red
Many kept a safe distance from the human onlookers
but a few hovered around the trail and ate from the palms of little hands
One feisty deer ripped open my son’s food bag
spilling pellets that would soon be eaten from the ground
where birds of prey swoop inches from spectators’ heads in between two falconers for food rewards
The action was much tamer than a similar raptor show we attended six years ago at Potzberg Wildpark near Ramstein Air Base
The falconer there tossed dead baby chicks that were snagged midair by outstretched talons and ripped to shreds in a matter of seconds
the falconers gave the birds a small treat after they alighted on their arm or a wooden perch – and there were no downy feathers involved
The show we saw included a vulture and a bald eagle
The birds followed the falconers’ lead and returned to their enclosures after stretching out their wings during a few minutes of freedom
a young vulture named Lazy Socke “set sail,” according to a park Facebook post from May
asking people to call the park if they saw a dark brown bird with a long neck or heard a bell
The vulture returned the next morning during a flight show
Our show ended with a falconer holding a Eurasian eagle-owl on his arm as children petted it and parents took photos
While we were happy to catch the flight show
we missed the raccoon and Barbary ape feedings
were still fun to watch in their enclosure
chattered their teeth as if they were laughing and groomed one another
because they quickly reached their hands through the small gap in the fence to accept food pellets from people
Other animals we saw along the way included peacocks
raccoon dogs and two very pregnant donkeys
We saw information boards with photos of adorable pot-bellied pigs
but the park says on its website it had to give up the pigs due to African swine fever
but they’re staying at a partner park due to renovations on their enclosure
We ended our walk around the park with some ice cream at the snack bar
You can also get warm food and drinks and there’s a small gift shop
My son barely remembered our visit to Potzberg when he was six
He even agreed that the animal encounters were much more fun than being at home playing video games
follow he signs posted for the wildlife park
The address: Naturwildpark Freisen Hermbacherhof 66629 Freisen
park opens at 10 a.m.; last entry at 4:30 p.m.
Raptor show daily at 3:30 p.m.; on weekends and holidays a second show is at 11 a.m
6.50 euros; food pellets for animals cost 1.50 euros
Food: Food and drinks available at small snack bar
— Funding for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) has become a point of confusion and concern among state lawmakers
is seeking clarity amid a significant budget shortfall that has left many questions unanswered
ODMHSAS reported a staggering $43 million deficit but has since revised its request to $6.2 million to keep operations afloat through the end of the fiscal year
"We just dipped our toes into the water," Provenzano said about the meeting
Commissioner Allie Freisen revealed that bonuses intended for service providers were mismanaged
“This was not operating as a bonus or an incentive payment,” Freisen said
Provenzano argued that these bonuses were essential
given that the agency had not seen a budget increase in seven years
She raised concerns about when the department became aware of its budget errors
noting discrepancies in the timeline provided by officials

this means that skilled jobs will be created in Germany
capacity and investments can be utilized and further developed in this programme as well as for the future In-Service Support
That is why we are very pleased to be part of this joint effort to provide Germany with the next generation 6×6 platform.”

you could end up with an award-winning kitchen
“It’s a good story,” said freelance designer Erika Freisen
‘One hundred per cent you do it.’ She trusted me and GCW and let us do what we do best
Often there are too many cooks in the kitchen — everyone gets involved in the design
the kitchen won best kitchen cabinetry from the London Home Builders’ Association
“All the credit for the award goes to the client,” Freisen said
“It was an incredibly fun job and incredibly scary because I worried we would lose her trust.”
The client shared her inspirational clipping file with Freisen and asked for a beautiful kitchen
“I knew she was a huge fan of Restoration Hardware so I knew what look she was after,” Freisen said
She also knew the kitchen had to be durable and practical for a family with young children and large dogs
a designer sends computer-generated drawings to GCW to manufacture
“The design is finalized and the installation is controlled by us,” DeGelder said
This kitchen is old-world craftsmanship integrated with new technology — from the artist’s sketches to perfect artistry
Jennifer Sanders) is able to take that vision (Erika’s) and apply it to geometric proportions
“Jennifer brings my drawings to life and everyone translates,” Freisen said
my first job is to understand Erika’s vision,” Sanders said
Using Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White and a hand-applied millstone glaze with custom distressing
the results were finally the look Freisen envisioned
“Erika wanted a level of distressing on the doors,” Sanders said
“A mark runs from one door and continues on the next when they fit together
“We did several sample doors then pasted them up
Duncan Greer was the lead custom builder and point person
and Kreig Kovich was lead finisher on the project
Sanders said it was a treat for them to have a project that could be appreciated like a work of art — “the details
the excitement of learning new things and experimenting.”
Countertops are made of natural Van Gogh quartzite with a leathered finish
“The level of detail and hand-applied artisanal detail is incredible,” Sanders said
There is a fully retractable door on a coffee bar
hidden outlets and custom knife blocks and a walk-in pantry
All the appliances are fully integrated and panel ready.”
The large space allowed Freisen to incorporate plenty of appliances: two dishwashers
One of the challenges of the space was a 3.7 metre ceiling
Freisen used the height for storing infrequent pieces that could be reached by a sliding ladder
It was the first time GCW created such a ladder for a kitchen
“It is walnut with a millstone glaze,” Sanders said
It can be tucked away flat against the gable of the pantry when not in use
I knew everything had to be big for such a large space,” Freisen said
The hood is an 2.4-metre custom steel design to accommodate the 1.2 metre range
with storage on three sides and a breakfast counter on the fourth
Details include raised pyramids that were hand-planed and appliqued on the corners and 18-centimetre baseboards and mouldings rather than the standard 10 cm
“The level of detail is amazing,” Sanders said
“There are three v-groove backed panels as an example of the router detail.”
and includes plans for bathroom renovations done at the same time
The process to enter the design competition was also lengthy
requiring a detailed description of the function and finishes
“There is an incredible amount of detail we spend a great deal of time fussing about,” Sanders said
GCW also won a most outstanding kitchen renovation award from the St

– The province’s motto may be ‘Strength from Many Peoples,’ but for Ray Milne
success has come from Saskatchewan’s diverse economy
a solid customer base and staff that go that extra mile
who started the company in 2004 with two partners who have since departed
Rod Freisen co-owns and is vice-president of RDK Transportation
coming on board in 2013 and bringing a wealth of trucking industry experience with him for the ride
But it’s not just Milne and Freisen who have made the business a success; like many small trucking companies
“The company has a number of family members who work here,” said Freisen
with co-owner Ray being his brother-in-law
“Julie came in to help out with various admin areas in the company,” Rod said
“so she really has no specific position other than you can always rely on her being there to help.”
in addition to managing previous trucking companies
come from owner-operator backgrounds and have always maintained the principle that ‘drivers come first.’
“The company has been upfront with the drivers (and) operators,” Julie said
“and we believe that is why the company has been able to stray strong
“The operators who join the company know on a load-by-load basis what they’re being paid
they know the office team has been doing their best to provide the freight to be hauled.”
Julie said her husband emphasizes to drivers that they are the sales people on the road
and their professionalism is what represents RDK
drives advertising and brings repeat business
With more than 75 owner-operators and company drivers
along with around 30 office and yard-based employees
The company provides truckload and less-than-truckload shipping on flat-deck trailers
heavy haul and specialized freight with companies such as Specialized Bulk Trailers
container de-stuffing and additional warehousing and assembly services
despite the recent economic downturn in neighboring province Alberta
those at RDK believe the ‘Land of the Living Skies’ offers enough diversity to keep the company moving forward
“Saskatchewan’s economy has been able to stay fairly strong through the western downturn in the oil industry,” Julie said
“Although freight has been harder to achieve
the young energetic staff has been able to work through these hurdles and keep the freight moving and the operators on the road week after week.”
“RDK is in a good position to weather the slowdown in the oil and gas sector due to the fact that we are very diversified and have a large loyal customer base that we strive to keep up with,” Ray added
Saskatchewan’s economy has been affected by the drop in oil and gas prices
has been able to endure the downturn better than Alberta
the Saskatchewan government announced the province’s May unemployment rate had fallen to 6%
second lowest among all provinces and lower than the Canadian average of 6.9%
The government also said there were 2,200 additional people working in May compared the month prior
which it said suggested the employment market may be stabilizing
“Resource sector challenges have hit Saskatchewan’s labor market,” said immigration
skills and training minister Jeremy Harrison
we are optimistic as forecasters predict our economy will begin to recover in the coming year
invest in people and invest in infrastructure in order to keep Saskatchewan strong as our economy begins to recover from low resource prices.”
Manitoba had the lowest unemployment rate in May at 5.9%
Julie said the RDK team’s strong connection is one of the biggest reasons they have seen ongoing growth through the economic slide
“Pulling together and working together has seen many obstacles having been worked through,” she said
Customer value and appreciation is also a key priority for RDK
with scheduling and daily load location being relayed to customers
as well as after-hours communication to ensure loads that need to be hauled are shipped
which provides tracking and information on all deliveries to its customers
“A company’s growth is only as strong as the efforts employees put in making things work no matter how difficult the load may seem,” Julie said
“Management and staff can sometimes be seen sitting together and making things work out with ideas from the oldest to youngest team members.”
with fully trained drivers who are provided with classroom and on-site training and testing by qualified staff
The company’s equipment is serviced and maintained by technicians and subject to an internal maintenance plan
But treating everyone like family is what RDK is all about
“Our company is on a first-name basis with everyone who comes through the door,” Julie said
“Management is always available to talk to every driver…the phones are open 24/7 to hear any concerns
“(This) young team is growing and facing many situations that will see the company grow and prosper into the future.”

Patrick's Varsity cheerleaders show off their medals after finishing first and winning the Grand Championship at a recent tournament in New Jersey.RICHMOND -- A year ago the cheerleaders at St
Patrick’s Elementary School in Richmond didn’t fare too well in the small school division at the yearly Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Islandwide competition at the College of Staten Island (CSI)
The parish team of seventh- and eighth-graders
is looking forward to the upcoming March 5 competition at CSI
as well as the yearly tournament at Fordham University in the Bronx
The large school team (now) has been working as hard as usual
but now they have some real success to boost its confidence
Patrick girls captured the top prize in the Grammar School’s Varsity Division at St
John Vianney High School’s 12th annual cheerleading competition in Holmdel
Patrick’s division and New Dorp’s Our Lady Queen of Peace finished second
That victory came on the heels of the team’s previous Grand Championship first-place finish (out of 35 other schools and recreational teams) the weekend before at David Brearley HS in Kenilworth
Teen coaches are Meghan and Jill Wald and Nicole Spataro
who have been on the Varsity since fourth grade
The rest of the squad includes: Donna Fiore
WOODSTOCK - WCI graduates of all ages are coming together to remember their old stomping grounds
This weekend Woodstock Collegiate Institute will be celebrating 75 years with a Homecoming
Graduates will be coming from near and far to attend; according the Principal of WCI Chris Freisen some of the attendees originally graduated back in the 1940s."We've been putting some decade rooms together
We're starting with the 40s 'cause we know we're going to have some folks who graduated in the late 40s
So you're talking 60 - 70 years worth of grads."
Freisen says he knew the school had a special place in the community
but the response has been overwhelming."A small group of us starting two and half years ago
planning this so - and you know the good news is we started as a small group and kept the event rather simple but a lot of great people have come along and added to our group both formally and informally
So the event has really grown from what we originally planned it would be but hopefully that just means it will be more enjoyable for everyone."
The two day celebration includes several different events kicking off on Friday with an open house
Although no registration is required for that event
Memorabilia will be placed throughout the school as a reminder of times gone by
More information can be found at the WCI Homecoming page.
