“Berlin has made the most unfavourable impression on me.” It is 1898 and Rosa Luxemburg has just arrived in the capital of the German Empire
She describes it in a letter as: “cold
massive – a real barracks.” She will remain in Berlin until her assassination
Here is where she spent her time in Berlin
“Berlin has made the most unfavourable impression on me.” It is 1898 and Rosa Luxemburg has just arrived in the capital of the German Empire
massive – a real barracks; and the dear Prussians with their arrogance
as though every one of them had swallowed the cane with which one had once been beaten…” Fair to say it isn’t love at first sight
but Luxemburg stays here until the bitter end
When she moves into her first Berlin home in the Hansaviertel
She’s just received German citizenship thanks to her marriage to a German acquaintance and a doctorate in economics from the University of Zurich (the only university open to women in the German-speaking world)
She also has quite an activist past behind her: she’s been an active member of a Warsaw Marxist organization since age 15
and was an electoral agitator among Polish-speaking workers in Prussian controlled Silesia
Germany’s (then radical) Social Democratic Party
first to Wielandstraße 23 and three years later
to be closer to her dear friends Karl and Luise Kautsky who live at Saarstraße 14
where the stars of the socialist movement meet on Sundays at the Kautsky’s to drink coffee and argue
The lead theoretician of the SPD is known around the world as the “Pope of Marxism.” For years
Luxemburg is his sharp-tongued ally in the fight against the party’s “revisionist” right-wing
The two have a falling out around 1910: Luxemburg believed the party should organize mass strikes in order to win voting rights for all in Prussia; Kautsky felt this was too risky
They never spoke again – but Luxemburg remains close to Luise Kautsky
a brothel opened on Cranachstraße 58 with the name “Rosa L.” Someone threw a brick through the window and the owner changed the name
In 1911 Luxemburg moves to the peace and quiet of “Südende” in Steglitz
where she writes her magnum opus: The Accumulation of Capital: A Contribution to the Economic Explanation of Imperialism
Luxemburg begins to work as an economics teacher at the SPD’s party school
Classes are held at the HQ of the SPD newspaper
a massive complex just west of the Belle-Alliance-Platz (today: Mehringplatz)
later the first president of the Weimar Republic
the first president of the German Democratic Republic
she starts organizing the anti-war left – but on February 18
she is sent to jail at the Berlin Women’s Prison in Friedrichshain for a pacifist speech she held in Frankfurt before the outbreak of the war
she had declared: “If we are called on to raise murder weapons against our French or other foreign brothers
without a trial) in prisons in Poznan and Wroclaw
Although stuck in a cell until the end of the war
she’s able to write the revolutionary “Spartacus Letters.” Circulated illegally
a group of Spartacists head to the Scherl Publishing House on Zimmerstraße
the HQ of the Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger – a high-circulation nationalistic paper comparable to today’s BILD (ironically
the block where Scherl used to be housed is now the home of the Springer publishing conglomerate)
the Spartacists take over the press to publish their own paper
Die Rote Fahne (“The Red Flag”) – before being kicked out by armed counter-revolutionaries and moving to a printshop on Königgrätzer Straße at the corner of Möckernstraße
Luxemburg and her friends meet in the ballroom above the entrance to the Prussian Landtag parliament (now the Berlin city parliament or the Abgeordnetenhaus)
87 delegates found the Communist Party of Germany or KPD
Their mission: drive the revolution forward
up to one million Berlin workers take to the streets to get rid of the provisional government
But the newly elected and first president of the Weimar Republic
SPD head Friedrich Ebert (Luxemburg’s former student) betrays the revolution and his former allies
using the Freikorps paramilitaries to crush the rebellion: the SPD’s Vorwärts building is attacked by artillery and machine guns
Blücherstraße 13 – just a few blocks from the street battles
is best remembered for his idea that working women should go on a “birth strike” to fight capitalism
Luxemburg and Liebknecht move to a new hiding place
first in the workers’ district of Neukölln (address unknown)
at the home of independent socialist Siegfried Marcusson
Liebknecht and Luxemburg are discovered and taken away by the Bürgerwehr (citizens’ militia) on January 15
The two prisoners are brought to the elegant Hotel Eden
where the Freikorps have their headquarters
Luxemburg is dragged from the hotel into a car and beaten to death with rifle butts
Officially she was “dragged away by a crowd and never seen again.” Contacted by Freikorps commander Waldemar Pabst looking for support
President Ebert and his War Minister washed their hands of the act: “You’ll have to be responsible for what needed to be done.” None of them are ever convicted for the murder
The Freikorps throw Luxemburg’s body into the canal
It will only be fished from the water six months later
Today a small monument with her name rises from that spot underneath the bridge connecting the two parts of the zoo
Hopefully animal-loving Luxemburg would have appreciated its proximity to the anteaters’ enclosure
Luxemburg’s body moves to its final resting place at the Socialist Cemetery in Friedrichsfelde alongside other revolutionary martyrs on January 25
Some 100,000 people attend the funeral (although
her body will only be buried there a half a year later)
The original monument by Mies van der Rohe is destroyed by the Nazis eight years later
tens of thousands of people commemorate Rosa Luxemburg at her grave with a red carnation
The small triangular square across from the Volksbühne once known as Bülowplatz
in the centre of the then Jewish Scheunenviertel
has been the seat of the Communist Party since 1926
Gone are the revolutionary slogans and giant portrait of Lenin that used to cover the Karl-Liebknecht-Haus
but the building on Weydingerstraße still serves as the Die Linke headquarters
The square was named after Luxemburg by the Soviet regime in 1947
unlike Marx-EngelsPlatz and Klara-Zetkin-Straße
the Platz was turned into a Rosa Luxemburg memorial
with 60 of her quotes carved into bronze strips and set into the pavement South-East of the U-Bahn station of today

Berlinale Goes Kiez in the City Kino Wedding
Hardly any other city has as many arthouse cinemas as Berlin does
they provide a unique bounty of film programming and a wide range of events treating film-cultural and socio-political subject matter
The individual cinemas are also as different from one another as their programmes are
they not only serve as special meeting places for film lovers – they also make a significant contribution to a better understanding and empathetic coexistence
Berlinale Goes Kiez is once again directing attention to local cinemas during the upcoming Berlinale
the festival would like to celebrate film and the cinema in particular
while also paying tribute to the valuable work that arthouse theatres perform
from February 17 to 23 the little red carpet will be making its way from neighbourhood to neighbourhood
The honour of opening Berlinale Goes Kiez this year goes to City Kino Wedding
following a change in management just over a year ago
is run with great enthusiasm by Andrea Stosiek (also of Sputnik Kino)
the cinema has made a name for itself in particular as a host of numerous festivals
as well as through a variety of special events
Neue Kammerspiele Kleinmachnow is among the region’s classic spots for local cinema due to the special bond it shares with its audience
This storied institution is not only a cinema that places its emphasis on European arthouse fare and exhibits a strong love for children’s cinema – it also provides a wide range of cultural programming
theatre performances and even music courses for large and small
After being uprooted by real-estate development plans
in mid-December 2023 it was able to re-open just under five minutes away from the old location
while the piano salon hosts “Wednesday Jazz” among other highlights
and the bar boasts self-brewed beer and a generous outdoor patio
The history of Kino Toni extends back to the year 1920
It has been remodelled multiple times since then and management has also changed a number of times
As the last “East Berlin” cinema in private hands
it was taken over in 1979 by the district agency and put up for sale by the Treuhand trust in the scope of re-unification
this “apartment house with a movie theatre” was purchased by director Michael Verhoeven
Since its sale to the Berlin-based film distributor Neue Visionen in 2018
Iris Praefke and Wulf Sörgel (both also of Kino Moviemento and Kino Central) have been the current operators
Babylon Kreuzberg has been part of the Yorck-Kino group since 1986
it attracted many guests from the Eastern part of the city until the Wall was erected
who could enjoy “Western films” here
it has gained notoriety for its spiral-shaped starry sky ceiling in the large cinema room and for exclusively showing original-version films
Sinema Transtopia is Berlin’s youngest cinema
Operating outside the realm of regular theatre releases
it presents a daily-changing curated programme of films and discussions devoted to transnational
(post-)migrant and post-colonial perspectives
where it was launched as a cinema experiment in the scope of an urban policy model project
in January 2023 Sinema Transtopia found its own permanent location in Wedding
thus adding a consistent discursive space to Berlin’s cinema landscape
Cosima Filmtheater opened in 1935 as the ninth cinema in Friedenau
built in a style common at the time – inside a residential building and featuring an elongated screening room
the cinema was run for many decades by the same theatre director
Karlheinz Opitz (also of Eva Lichtspiele) took over and subsequently undertook extensive renovations
the cinema re-opened in new splendour and now regularly shows selected film classics and “Berlin film rarities” alongside current arthouse fare
February 18 Neue Kammerspiele Kleinmachnow 3
February 19 Kino Zukunft (Friedrichshain)4
February 23 Cosima Filmtheater (Friedenau)
The operators will be presenting unique aspects of each venue in brief video portraits
providing insights into everyday life in the cinema
telling personal stories from their establishments and inviting any and all interested parties to come out and discover their cinemas
the special series Berlinale Goes Kiez was expanded to include the presentation of a Berlinale film in a Berlin prison
Following the positive experiences of the past years
this cooperation will also be continued in 2024
This joint effort allows Berlinale Goes Kiez in a special manner to fulfil its mission of deconstructing barriers and enabling cultural participation
Details on the full programme of Berlinale Goes Kiez as well as admission requirements for the special event at the correctional facility will be announced in a further press release on February 6
Berlinale Goes Kiez is made possible with the generous support of Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg
What a great little club: fabulous sound and a wonderfully attentive listening audience
a residential area about 5km south-west of Berlin’s other top club
the A-Trane which is just by the Ku-Damm and much more central
managed to stay afloat through the pandemic and does a brilliant job
was once upon a time in London as a student on the Popular Music course at London College of Music
and his club has the reputation of really taking good care of musicians
London’s loss has definitely been Berlin’s gain
and there is a staggered booking time in operation
The music charge is only payable in cash on the door
but the food and drink inside can be paid for in cards
And drinks are served with a genuinely friendly smile
One curious constraint: not a single note of music is allowed to be played after 11pm… suburban neighbours
all the usual stuff…but all it means is that if there are going to be grand peregrinations in solos
and this gig was the first appearance as leader in Berlin for more than two decades by alto saxophonist Jim Snidero
His new album “For All We Know” is of standards, in a pianoless trio with Peter Washington and Joe Farnsworth, and Morgan Enos recently interviewed him about it for us (LINK) In it he says “ I’m naturally an optimist
and I feel that in my music.” The positivity of his playing came across throughout the two sets
as did the long-ago shadow of his mentor Phil Woods
was one-time adoptive Londoner now back in Bari
fascinating solo on Snidero’s tune “Infinity” suddenly injected a real touch of magic
he has a freedom to roam and to plan escape after escape which reminded me of John Taylor at his best
with Giulio Scianatico on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums
but they look distinctly like 0% listening and 100% AI
Bassist Doug Weiss gave a masterclass in how to be melodically clear and straightforward in a bass solo, and drummer Chris Smith did everything he talked about in this little promotional video for the school where he teaches in Austria
Jazz clubs like these need all the help they can get
They are the ideal surroundings to hear fine musicians finding each other out on the stand

That's what a blue neon sign on the otherwise bare
unplastered wall of Malafemmena in Friedenau district reveals
And how can you not love mozzarella made from water buffalo milk
since it makes just about any meal that little bit better
But that's the real star at Malafemmena anyway and the reason why lovers of Neapolitan pizza from all districts make their way to southern Berlin - if it can't be southern Italy
the place is busy and as no reservations are possible
The pizza base is fluffy and baked with Italian expertise of the Neapolitan pizza maker in a 450 degree oven
In addition to traditional varieties like marinara or salame
or those with a burrata ball perched in the middle
A special treat are also the deep-fried pizzas - a real specialty. By the way
Malafemmena is the only Berlin pizzeria that is even a member of the Official Association of Neapolitan Pizzerias - if that's not convincing
By the way, Malafemmena made it into our Top 10 Pizza list in Berlin and recently opened a second branch in Prenzlauer Berg district.

Would you like to discover more beautiful things
praising his contribution both to world literature and civil rights
But it is Günter Grass's erstwhile housekeeper who has delivered the most touching homage
revealing the domestic side of Germany's favourite writer
Margarethe Amelung has written her own literary tribute to her former employer based on the time she spent in his service in the 1960s
Ms Amelung paints a detailed picture of the daily life of the Grass family
who lived in the leafy southern Berlin district of Friedenau
She recalls her surprise at the bohemian way in which they lived: "No wallpaper
no tablecloths." She also talks of the amount of meat that Grass
a Nobel prize winner and author of novels such as The Tin Drum
"I think his love of meat kept his hair from going completely grey," she told Der Tagesspiegel
the daughter of a protestant minister from Osnabrück
was taken on at the age of 16 shortly before the birth of Günter and his first wife Anna's fourth child
She had answered an advert in the magazine Christ and the World asking for someone to "peel the onions" for 220 deutschmarks a month
The irony of the request is not lost on Grass aficionados
His last book was called Peeling the Onion
in which he revealed his membership of the Waffen SS in Nazi Germany
Ms Amelung's seemingly mundane domestic reflections
are being seen by the publishing world as a welcome antidote to the admissions that shocked his fans around the world
And they are being lapped up by Grass's public
who thought they knew everything about him but are only now learning of his love of apple juice and his aversion to kitchen appliances
which meant cream had to be beaten with a hand whisk
Ms Amelung reveals details such as how she cooked his favourite meat dishes such as leg of mutton with rosemary and garlic
calf's brains and artichokes in vinaigrette
She produced the dishes for him on demand to keep him sustained while he wrote
she writes: "The tears were shooting out of my eyes
Herr Grass was showing signs of schadenfreude and said to his wife: 'Look at our Margarethe
she's crying tears of joy - over the onions.'"
He’s doing it for his lover at Eurovision 2017
And today Spain’s Manel Navarro did it for all y’all who love surf
carefree performance set before an LED beach
Manel stands centre stage in a tropical shirt
flanked by two guitarists who channel Ibiza and Hawaii with their own floral tops
tantalising with a flash of taut-and-tanned chest
During one run-through Manel actually pulled a Janet Jackson and revealed a bit of nipple — not that anyone minded
The LED includes a series of playful and brightly coloured images
including oversized surfboards that appear and disappear in succession
and the outline of palm trees and a golden sun
At one point we see a camper van — probably a VW — hopping
the passengers can’t help but bounce along
The colours add a tonality to the show that we haven’t yet seen
hot and memorable — and fits the song perfectly
@Americanvision = ”Spain (it’s Eurovision
not Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville)”
Eurovision can be anything and this is why we watch it
There’s something oddly charming about this but I can’t see it appealing to a big audience
It doesn’t bring the Iberian realness
it’s more of a busy stuff in the background
I must say the two performances I have liked the most are Italy and Spain
this could be an icebreaker at the grand finals
Manel has brought his band with him and they look like a boyband
The boys look great together but they look so much like a band it’s hard to distinguish Manel as a solo artist
the whole thing is pretty cool and Manel looks great on camera; he has such a nice charm about him
He’s also wearing his shirt buttoned down so low that at one point there was a nip slip
The only ones I would’ve liked more from the Spanish final are LeKlein or Maika
If you play the “Contigo” vinyl backwards
you’ll hear the name of this year’s winner
Every time you sing “Contigo” in front of a ventilator
Unfortunately it’s not mathematically possible for anyone to get “minus” points
Every time you sing “Contigo” in front of a ventilator
Don’t hate the song but it the staging and the performance seemed a little too relaxed
it’s more meant for a house band during a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Margaritaville
I’m having tacos with my husband at a local Mexican restaurant as I’m replying to this!)
I didn’t think that anything could make this song less interesting
Everytime an eurofan says “Mirela”
If you repeat “Mirela” three times in front of a mirror

As is often the case in life, it's the little details that first catch your eye: a gorgeous candlestick, a colourful shimmering barrette, or even accurately shaped eyebrows and long, clashing eyelashes. Both, charming home accessories, as well as discreet beautification of the facial contours, can be found in Friedenau at Nelly Karlson and beauty stories.
Ines discovers the special interior products, accessories and toys on her trips to Scandinavia, the Netherlands or Germany. However, she is particularly fond of Denmark and the cheerful, colourful style of the Danes.
She visits our neighbours in the north several times a year and particularly appreciates the colourful style there; Scandinavia doesn't always have to be straightforward and greige. Ines is looking above all for "something special". All products are partly produced by hand and come from small artists, sustainable designers and small manufacturers or girl power labels.
And so the enchanting prints of the Swede Astrid Wilson accompany you to the back - into the skilled hands of Jessy. Because the addition of "and beauty stories" stands for permanent natural makeup like Powder Brows and Watercolor Lips. Not somehow strangely painted one appears by this procedure. Rather simply a little refreshed: neatly defined brows give the face more expression, and a gentle consumption and tinting of the lips give natural freshness - even without daily makeup.
Jessy uses only colours without iron oxide and from resource-saving production for this. As a mom of four, she knows this: you don't want to put on makeup every day, but you still want to look a little fresh and trim. "I got into it because I had it done on myself. I just thought it was great to get up in the morning, not having to do anything, and still looking fresh. I have four kids and don't have time to take care of something like that in the morning," the specialist explains.
Various friends and relatives are also guaranteed to be delighted with the freshness and glistening eyelashes for the coming festivities. If you would like to give away an eyelash lift, Nelly Karlson and beauty stories also offer vouchers.
There will also be regular events here in the future: small, relaxed and cool events with great people and artists from Berlin and the region. There are already some great events planned: a three-day pop-up with a young designer from the area, for example, where Jessy will offer live applications. A vernissage is also already in the starting blocks.
For the coming Advent season, the two women behind Nelly Karlson and beauty stories are also planning a cosy Christmas market atmosphere, simply "to bring a bit of life into here because there's not much else going on in this area." Sometimes it's the little details that can make a big difference.

I keep noticing that I judge things mainly by their appearance, even though I am trying not to. This recently happened at Eis Voh located in Friedenau. For around two years I walked by the inconspicuous and not very stylish shop. I must have passed by over a hundred times until one day a sign with lactose-and gluten free ice cream and cake caught my attention.
I carefully started with one flavour of ice cream and the second time I already risked two different ones. Then I tried the cakes....a nut cake from South Tyrol...Poppy Seed cake....What had I done? I totally missed out on these delicious treats, because whatever I tried was simply great - even the cinnamon cookies during Christmas time.
The fact that all their products are lactose or gluten free didn’t make them any less tasty. The ice cream as well as the cake were a lot better than what one can get at most bakeries. “It is because of all the organic ingredients and the family recipes”, the baker and owner Horst Voh explains.
There is also a whole bar full of scrumptious homemade ice cream and for the past 14 days also organic frozen yoghurt. In the front of the shop you will find the Berlin-born Mrs Voh, who is always calm and always has something witty to say.
Thus I would like to recommend this store, not only to people with allergies, but to everyone. In Chinese medicine wheat flour is frowned upon, so I guess this place is trendy after all!

After four months of renovations, in an almost unnoticed manner, Friedenau's Lula Deli Delux has opened up a second location. After having sampled through their selection of homemade bread, I am fairly certain that this new subsidiary will become a big talking point beyond its neighborhood.
I tried it all - despite my otherwise gluten free diet. Because after Sarah Sever, mother of two, chef, baker and Lula's creative head, told me all about the preparing at Lula's own bakery, I had to go for the self-experiment.
Letting the dough prove and ripen for 48 hours apparently makes it a lot more wholesome. The looks, the texture – perfect. The taste? From the Levain, a traditional French country bread to the to walnut bread, a walnut bread and a Mediterranean country bread with tomato and olives to the rolls everything simply tastes heavenly. The country bread is crunchy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. The kind of goodness I have so far only tasted at Sironi's of Markthalle Neun.
this dough sits and ripens for at least 24 hours
Parts of the 'Lievito Madre' dough are two years old and have developed 'wild' yeasts that make for very distinct flavor nuances
Garnishes and toppings of the crusty Italian sourdough pizza vary creatively and can go as far as arugula with hummus
Among them many classics from the original Hedwigstraße location – with the prominent breakfast menu leading the way
Both kitchens prove to be working with the best ingredients
authentic cuisine while refraining from the use of flavor enhancers or any kind of convenience products
If the quality they require is not available on the market
they'd rather make it from scratch themselves
Business could not be done with more passion than that
By the way, Lula am Markt made it into our Top 10 Pizza list in Berlin
Spain’s beloved musical reality show Operación Triunfo is celebrating 20 years since its doors first opened
the show has also had a close relationship with Eurovision
Rosa López (ESC 2002) claimed victory in the first edition of the show in 2002
Critics had questioned whether the show would succeed
The finale was watched by 12.5 million viewers
Operación Triunfo has unleashed waves of hype with each of its 11 subsequent editions
It gave birth to stars such as David Bisbal
and rightly established its place in the history of Spanish television
Operación Triunfo helped the country fall in love with Eurovision again
RTVE’s Eurovision broadcast drew 12.8 million viewers — Spain’s best-ever ratings for the song contest
and RTVE organised a proper celebration for the special anniversary
In a live stream running 24-hours from Friday
invited former contestants to walk down memory lane and even revisited fan favourite performances
Operación Triunfo may have stopped for now
but a return in 2022 seems to be on the table
eight Operación Triunfo contestants have represented Spain and neighbouring Andorra at Eurovision
others got the Eurovision gig in later years
let’s unleash that Operación Triunfo realness and see who your favourite act is
You can vote for as many acts as you’d like
but you can only submit your votes ONE time
Rosa’s pop disco fever “Europe’s Living a Celebration” was a turning point for Spain regarding the popularity of Eurovision
Rosa still holds the record for most-watched Eurovision edition in Spain’s history
Joined on stage by her Operación Triunfo colleagues — David Bisbal
Gisela and Geno — Rosa had the time of her life while dancing amid flashing multi-coloured disco lights
Rosa brought Spain its second top-ten placing since the turn of the century
Her performance involved rhythm and dancing and some difficult choreography
Spain’s Eurovision 2002 crew reflected on the difficulty in remembering all the steps
David Bustamante recounted that there was wine
ham and cheese on the Spanish table in the Green Room
Geno recently claimed that her mistake in one of her spins was due to her dyslexia
Tackling the problems associated with that
The great ratings Rosa managed in 2002 inspired RTVE to continue with Operación Triunfo as their selection process
Beth Rodregas was selected in a separate voting process to represent Spain in Riga
despite finishing third in Operación Triunfo
Her performance was filled with energy and her delivery granted Spain another top 10 spot
She even won the Marcel Bezençon Fan Award
Ramón ended the streak of Spain of using Operación Triunfo as the selection process
Spain claimed another top-ten placing while obtaining the most number of votes of all their 2000s entries
The hook of this song kept it going in Spain
as it stayed on the Spanish charts for nine weeks
Ramón has been living in Norway since 2013 where he works as an AV producer
Just six years after joining Rosa López in 2002
Gisela became the first — and to date only — Operación Triunfo contestant to represent Andorra
Her song “Casanova” is the first Andorran entry entirely in English
Gisela’s musical career did not stop
She became the voice of Elsa in the Catalan and Castilian Spanish versions of Frozen
which granted her a featured performance in the Oscars in 2020
She is the first and so far only Spanish artist to have ever performed live at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles
Edurne remains the only Operación Triunfo act internally selected to represent Spain at Eurovision
In 2015 — 10 years since she first entered Operación Triunfo — Edurne went to Eurovision with a song composed by some big names
They were Tony Sánchez-Ohlsson (Spain’s 2012 composer)
Peter Boström and Thomas G:son (Sweden’s 2012 composers)
Edurne only managed a 21st place at Eurovision
Edurne’s result remains Spain’s best since 2015
Operación Triunfo returned to Spanish TV after six years
Improved ratings and massive fan interaction motivated RTVE to use Operación Triunfo as its Eurovision selection and to dream of better results
Unfortunately Amaia and Alfred’s romantic ballad
Their 23rd placing in Lisbon added yet another bottom-five placing
Miki Nuñez is the last Operación Triunfo contestant to step on the big Eurovision stage
With a song loaded with a fiesta spirit and Mediterranean vibes
Miki Nuñez had the time of his life with the audience
Explosions of rhythm and colour characterised his performance that did well with the televote
which kept Spain in the bottom five once more
Now it’s time for you to decide which Eurovision performance from an Operación Triunfo contestant is the best
You can vote for as many acts as you’d like
I love all of them except “Europe’s living a celebration” and “Casanova”
All the rest were among my favourites for their respective years
and among the many reasons Spain being my 2d favourite ESC country
Tu Cancion and La Venda have had my SMS’s
Amaia’s latest song Yo Invito is a pure magic!) 2
Dime (surprised to see it winning given the… uhm… vocal performance
I will forever stick to the studio version which is indeed awesome.)… Read more »
Edurne and Miki were both quite underrated in their final evenings
Both songs should have placed at least around the fifteenth place
Dime is a song I still have on my playlist
her live performance and staging concept was underwhelming
ROSA should go back to the eurovision song contest as she is so fantastic and stunning singer and she should duet with Beth
Beth was Top 5 material (Alf Poier receiving more points than Dime: I’m still not recovered)
Miki and Edurne that low in the scoreboard
And Soraya also deserved a bit more; 2nd-to-last position for that song and performance made no sense at all
cute song and very nice performance (I had a soft spot for them)
however I’m leaning towards Dime more
Insanely catchy and definitely one of the songs of my childhood
Shame she didn’t like the song that much and the singing was a bit messy
but luckily the song was that amazing to still end in the top 10
a catchy song that represents the 00s music trend with latin pop flavour
It would have been a better winner for 2003
even though the backing singers left a lot to be desired and even though beth seemed to detest it
Spain’s Blas Cantó is last up to the Rotterdam Ahoy stage for his first rehearsal of “Voy a quedarme” ahead of Eurovision 2021
Oliver: This is perhaps the biggest surprise of the day
Blas Cantó has come out of nowhere with a revamped version of “Voy a quedarme”
He starts out the first verse completely a cappella with the piano joining in during the pre-chorus
we hear a thumping drum beat and a staccato passage from the more prominent string section
It adds a modern element of dynamism to this otherwise classic and formulaic ballad
And Blas’ vocal is good throughout — he hits the falsetto notes effortlessly
The simplicity of this staging is a bit of a fakeout
It starts off as a starry night with a lunar eclipse on the screen
just when we thought we’d seen the largest staging prop gimmick of the year in the form of the UK’s trumpets
Spain hits us with an enormous moon descending from the ceiling
think The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
Spain isn’t headed for victory with this song
but that final moment will certainly be memorable
Padraig: It’s the very last first rehearsal of Eurovision 2021
And while it might not be a case of saving the best for last
Blas live performance is even more emotional than before
and the new acapella intro is a nice touch
The crooner is bathed in blue as plumes of dry ice slowly envelope the stage
The eclipse clear to reveal a gigantic full moon
And it’s not an LED marvel or a digital illusion
They’ve brought an actual moon to Rotterdam and hung it above Blas’ head
But the problem is that many others have done so too

Honestly the song is not the most memorable
very classic but effective staging puts it in the spotlight
I think his direct competitor is Uku Suviste for Estonia
they play in the same court and target the same audience
If Uku goes to the final they risk to cancel each other out by dividing the points
I’m not a big fan of Spain’s song
but it sure does not deserve to be so low in the odds
How this song is so underrated and mistreated by the fans and the betting odds will always be my biggest mystery of the year
but it’s super emotional and Blas is one of this year’s best performers
but this song is not the worst by any means
I hope you get the recognition you deserve in the finals
it’s one of my favourites although it doesn’t seem to catch so many people behind it
I think Spain has a very beautiful staging this year and Blas is super talented
everything sounds perfect but Marvin Dietmann has fooled the Spanish delegation
It had potential to move the audience but Marvin just decided to put a huge moon there
Also the stars in the background and the supernova exploding is an overused theme
because Marvin is just running with our money when he has set up many great performances this year
Austria… I’m completely disappointed and I’ve never been this disappointed before
not even with “Do it for… Read more »
Marvin had better songs to work with other countries
Maybe he wasn’t fully into Spain because it’s not in English but Blas’s song is difficult to stage
Then he shouldn’t have accepted the job
I guess… Better go for some local talent next year
And maybe the fault relies on the people who hired him…
He’s such a handsome guy and the outfit is very elegant
This is my favourite song from the whole Eurovision 2021
Also I am very connected to the personal message of the song
I NEED to know where he got that outfit or who designed it
It’s not difficult to make Blas looking great
his outfit is pure class and still look super comfortable at the same time
I think the shirt is from Zara they have this style of clothing
because I keep getting disappointed by the decisions RTVE’s people keep making over and over and over
but this one actually looks pretty good in the pictures.Though their competition in the ballad lane are France
Switzerland and Bulgaria… and they’re many many levels ahead
cute outfit and nice staging but if Miki’s La Venda couldn’t make the top 20 while being last in the running order then I absolutely don’t see any place in the top 20 for this either
especially knowing how strong this year is overall
as a Spaniard myself I must admit I’m not overly hopeful with our chances to do well
the song is not very competitive and the staging doesn’t look particularly interesting
but that’s according to my own perception of course
he has proven time and time again that he is an incredibly sweet and talented artist and I’m thankful that he is representing us
I just wholeheartedly hope RTVE starts prepping things for ESC 2022 as soon as the debacle happens and maybe
Spain will be fighting for the… Read more »
We’re both Spaniards and we both know the answer: RTVE won’t move a finger
are always a low quality last minute creation
then they promise a lot of things (all lies)
they start talking about what they’re going to change cause they had nothing ready
RTVE is a corrupted corporation and that’s never going to change
So is france most of the time ( i mean destination eurovision this year was pretty last moment’) but they’re still in it to win it
What I’m about to say might sound mean
but Spain (at least RTVE) should drop out of Eurovision next year
they’re not willing to do the stuff that has to be done and they’re miserably wasting a lot of money
Spain‘s anticipated song-selection gala is taking shape as new details arise
The two songs Blas Cantó will compete with at the Eurovision gala will be released on 10 February
The news was revealed by a casual post by broadcaster RTVE
Posted after midnight and in the form of an advertisement on their website
RTVE announced that Spain’s voting will start on February 10th
Blas Cantó has also confirmed that both competing songs will be released on the same date
Primer anuncio oficial de la Preselección de @BlasCanto. A partir del 10 de febrero comienza la votación. ?? pic.twitter.com/6pA1tbjRoG
— Alex Lex (@eurofan_lalala) February 6, 2021
In late January, RTVE confirmed the rumours about a Eurovision gala and three days later, Spain’s HoD revealed that everyone, and from everywhere
Another detail has come out of the promo video
Spain’s Eurovision gala will be named Destino Eurovision
that’s probably because the name is the same previously used for pre-selections in 2003
And while the voting is due to start on February 10
the broadcaster is yet to confirm the date of the national final itself
Lo bueno de todo esto es que vais a ver muuuuchas promos todo el tiempo
Podréis escuchar las canciones enteras a partir del 10 de febrero
— Blas Cantó ? (@BlasCanto) February 6, 2021
Viewers will have a simple choice, picking their favourite of just two songs that Blas Cantó will present at Destino Eurovision
Both songs, as Blas Cantó reaffirmed to RTVE
while the other competing piece is full of both sensitivity and power
“I think any of both songs will do well in Eurovision
I love both songs and both show my duality as an artist: strength and sensitivity
I will defend the song the audience decides.”
Some songs were cut because of their lack of competitiveness
“We chose two because these two gather everything we are expecting from me in the contest
for their production and staging designs.”
Rather than RTVE making one big announcement about Spain’s Eurovision gala for 2021
details have been released from different sources in dribs and drabs
Are you excited that the voting is set to start soon
When do you think the gala should take place
And do you agree with the communication system of RTVE

If “Universo” is anything to go by
Many Spaniards don’t think Blas will do a great job in Eurovision
sending another generic teen pop singer is foolish
If “Universo” ranked low in the betting odds
They had enough time to make 2 music videos not just audios
I am looking forward to hear the songs from Blas and I hope that he’s getting the right song for Rotterdam !
😀 but that’s part of Eurovision season
I think this year will be better than last year for Blas
He learnt the leason: no experiments; stick to what you do best
Well technically the “jury”/broadcaster already narrowed it down to two songs
But yeah I’m excited to see what Blas brings to the table
it’s not like that in a National Final the public get to choose between 537 “applications” 😀
I added TVE Internacional to my cable package for this very reason
we’ll get some quality songs from Blas and the danish candidates
She’s the three-time RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant known for her energetic and high-impact performances
drag queen Shangela Laquifa Wadley added a Eurovision song to her repertoire
lip-syncing to Netta’s winning song “Toy”
Footage uploaded to YouTube shows Shangela performing the song in her set for the Werq The World Tour
an ongoing global tour featuring drag queens from the Emmy Award winning
hit TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race and its All Stars spin-off
The video is from the tour’s stop in Stockholm on 15th June earlier this year
After opening with a dramatic rendition of Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor”
the fan-favourite queen begins to unbutton her dragon-head-adorned red coat as Netta’s distinct voice is heard being played through the Göta Lejon theatre speakers
The crowd gives an initial cheer once they recognise the song and they begin singing along before Shangela throws her coat off stage and begins strutting her stuff to the Eurovision 2018 winning entry
the All Stars 3 finalist gives a dynamic performance
and of course a little bit of the chicken dance
Shangela further utilises the silver and black embellishments on her red body suit to provide extra motion and drive to the show
which goes down a storm with the Swedish audience
who can be heard cheering her on throughout
Following the first verse and chorus of “Toy” the song cuts out as Shanglea completes the set with Rhianna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money”
her verse from the revamped version of RuPaul’s “Kitty Girl”
in addition to her own song “Werqin’ Girl (Professional)”
The inclusion of “Toy” in Shangela’s set for Werq The World suggests she’s been performing it at many of her dates on the recent European leg of the tour over the summer
And while she may have thought about leaving the song on the shelf when returning to the United States
recent footage from her Instagram story shows Shangela performing the same set at a booking in Houston
Shangela lip syncing to Toy. Netta couldn’t even. pic.twitter.com/7SCQzj8HiD
— Mike || MONUMENT ? || Oslo 2022 ?? (@MelloMikeUK) September 10, 2018
The clips see the All Star working her signature flair on the song once again
but this time in front of the local American audience
Being across the pond in North America suggests the crowd is less likely to be filled with Eurovision fans (or people who know of the contest at all) than the events in Europe
Shangela’s decision to continue performing the song in different areas of the globe shows just how much she believes in its message and its ability to provide audiences with a party atmosphere no matter if they’re die-hard Eurovision fans or not
the crowd at Rich’s Houston once again cheer the queen on throughout the set
showing their love for both the song choice as well as Shangela’s fierce performance
After initially hearing “Toy” during a trip to Israel in early April and then again in her role as the Eurovision commentator for Logo TV
it’s clear that Shangela has found a song she truly connects to and wants to share with audiences everywhere
With the queen no doubt set to appear at numerous more events and gigs across the globe
we can’t wait to see her twirl and death-drop to the song in the future (and if the Eurovision bug sticks
perhaps we’ll see her werking her magic with more entries from the contest)
Shangela isn’t the only Drag Race alumni to have a go at performing Netta’s infectious tune
Season four and seven contestants Madame LaQueer and Jaidynn Diore Fierce have both performed the entire song at weekly drag show Showgirls
the queen is seen concentrating more on the chicken/bird theme of the song
Beginning by wearing a large black coat with feather-covered sleeves
she flaps her arms up and down to imitate a bird in flight
The coat is soon removed though to reveal a red and gold Angry Birds themed bodysuit with feather attachments at the back
Jaidynn then proceeds with a high energy and stylised routine
which includes dance moves and crazy facial expressions that fit the song’s character and charm perfectly
Madame LaQueer performed the song in a more simple fashion
Donning neon pink hair and wearing a black and green patterned catsuit
given added shape from a black corset worn on top
she starts with a bit of peek-a-boo through the curtains before strutting up and down the stage having fun with the quirky nature of the song
While drag queens lip-syncing to Eurovision songs may not be entirely new, the fact that a number of Drag Race alumni are taking “Toy” to audiences well outside the Eurovision bubble is another testament to the tune’s ability to bring the party and put a smile on people’s faces no matter where they’re from
But whatever lies ahead for Israel’s new champion over in North America
it’s clear that Netta and “Toy” won’t be sashaying away anytime soon
maybe we’ll see the song featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race itself as a lip-sync for your life sometime in the future
What do you make of Shangela’s lip-sync to “Toy”
Which drag queen do you want to see werk the song next
And are you happy to see a Eurovision song being performed at venues across the globe
Jonathan is a Eurovision fan from the United Kingdom and first watched the contest in 2005

All the drag queens would be giving such energetic performances to that
I miss the times when lip-synching was not considered a talent
Hopefully sanity will be back in style at some point
It’s more than trying to match your lips with a backing track
it’s all about the whole performance that requires charisma
especially on how RuPaul’s Drag Race made into an artform which got them that historic Primetime Emmy win
I’m going to get hate for this: I’m so sick of Toy
and I’m happy about the success it’s getting but it’s been half a year
she’ll probably make something new for 2019
My new anthem is Playground by Scilla Hess 😉 As much as I like Netta
We continue our series looking at the participating countries of Eurovision and the reasons why we love them so very much
And while we let you feel the warmth of this nation
we will be looking today at the land of Latin fire and genuine passion
Spain’s path in the contest first started back in 1961
in neighbouring France’s beloved Cannes
Spain has never missed any edition of the contest — becoming the only nation to record the most number of entries in a row since its debut
Let’s take a look at 10 reasons why we love Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest
From Conchita Bautista to this year’s Amaia and Alfred
Spain has consistently sung in their own language setting a record of 57 times out of 58 total appearances
Only Barei‘s 2016 entry “Say Yay” has been the only time Spain has sung entirely in English
the Iberian nation has properly gifted us with fiery and emotional hits throughout its history
From Azúcar Moreno‘s beloved “Bandido” to powerhouse Pastora Soler‘s “Quédate Conmigo”
the language of Cervantes means passion… ¡y olé
or two or three… but 24 ballads throughout its history in the contest
it was the most used genre for Spanish entries
But the genre has also gifted us with truly powerful pieces that have become some of the most famous — and beloved — Spanish songs in Eurovision
From Anabel Conde to Sergio Dalma to Pastora Soler; Spain does have a powerhouse of vocal mastery and proper passion
The truth is that you never know how will Spain decide their act for Eurovision
And has there been a format the Iberian nation hasn’t already used
Spain has used up to four different selection methods in a row that included an internal selection
an online voting selection process and Operación Triunfo‘s TV Show
Spain has also explored options that included selecting the artist internally and the song in a national final
Or an online vote where the top-10 most-voted contestants advance to a national final
And they never stick with one national final format
Mira quien va a Eurovisión and Objetivo Eurovisión
Spain’s Eurodrama chapters are worthy of being featured in a real telenovela
there wouldn’t be Eurofans taking their cup of tea while checking Twitter’s madness tragedy
the Objetivo Eurovision 2017 voting might still top the chapter list
The intensity of that episode not only hit the nation and appeared in the Spanish newscasts and on most famous talk shows — it even ended up being discussed in the Spanish Parliament
From Cristina Cifuentes — the Madrid Community president who has been recently involved in a hilarious lotion shoplifting scandal — to Eleni Foureira’s remake with Spanish legend Belen Esteban; laughs are served

The show that once moved Spain and gave the nation a new golden era at Eurovision
the show finally came back on prime-time Spanish TV and served a brutal revolution viewers were not expecting
A renovated Academy maintained its essence and 16 talented and charismatic contestants brought the music
top daily trending topics on Spanish social media and millions of song streams
From this platform has given us many familiar Eurovision faces
and of course this year’s beloved couple Amaia & Alfred
Spain and staging have an awkward relationship that sometimes doesn’t really work — or just fails
Soraya’s magic trick during her 2009 performance still remains unforgotten
Soraya trusted a famous Spanish magician who crafted the idea for her performance
while being poked in the legs with the sharp Swarovski crystals from her dress
the Iberian nation has truly gifted us with strong Latin songstresses
the list includes joyful Massiel and fiery Latin Son de Sol
Spain’s outfits do clearly go hard or go home
From Lydia‘s rainbow-striped Pirulo ice-cream Barbara Dex winner to Remedio‘s distinctive blue and white striped dress; that’s inspiring fashion in all ways and the rest is nonsense
But Spain also has worthy novelty performances that serve proper attitude all-about laughing but don’t care quality. While everyone pretty much can remember Rodolfo Chikilicuatre‘s “Baila el Chiki Chiki” and his four steps (1
Spain has also in its record other gems such as Las Ketchup‘s glamorous “Bloody Mary” and their red office chairs or Son de Sol‘s joyful “Brujería” and their un-desired rapper

julio iglesis… spain sends alwyays beautiful people
the also have song ‘lalala’ more than any other country with notable songs in 1968 and 1979 🙂
I actually laughed too much reading this ??
Anyone else noticed that all of the entries were Castilian a.k.a
There wasn’t even once Catalan or any other co-official language
France for example sent Corsican twice and Breton once
I guess with Spain it’s more of a political thing
I wish Spain would bring songs in Galician
Their 2014 spokesperson might have been bizarre
but does anyone remember the lady who announced the Spanish points in 2001
The hosts in Denmark had to make her repeat “Esluvenia” three times lmaooo
Death & The Tooth Fairy were no prize either
in my opinion (I’m from Spain) by two Eurodramas: Manel Navarro’s victory and Daniel Diges’s victory
Mirela just didn’t want to know about it anymore
but Coral Segovia didn’t say a beautiful word about RTVE
Coral’s performance wasn’t exactly great
Spain seriously needs to look at themselves
The weakest country of the big 5 with such a big music world
that could’ve easily been a top 10 placing
Spain needs to look at other big 5 countries such as Italy and France
Even Germany and the UK have shown signs of a slight improvement
They should either send something very late 90s Enrique Iglesias
or try to copy the Puerto Rican formula like they did with Lo malo
They gotta go back to the salsa explosion of 01-04
It’s been 50 years since they last won…
I do hope a country that hasn’t won before or a country that hasn’t won in quite a while like Spain (last win: 1969)
France (last win: 1977) or the Netherlands (last win: 1975) can take it home next year
The best song and performance should win – not any country who hasn’t won in 50 years
Vuelve Conmigo is probably my favorite Eurovision song ever
Love the Paid in Full beat on the studio version
The orchestral arrangement was great too and didn’t bog it down or make it less contemporary
it had some really alternative jazz and latino vibes
And Edurne with Amanecer was probably one of the best Spanish songs and stagings in ESC history
Generally I’m pretty unimpressed with Spain though
if you include the results from the last 10 years
Spain has actually been worst country of the big 5
UK is for me the worst out of all the countries
It only had two decent songs in the last 20 years
There are worse countries than the UK in Eurovision
Spain reached it’s limit in 2004 but 2012
calling the UK the country which sends the worst quality songs is very harsh
The problem with the UK’s songs is that they’re too average and not contemporary enough
The BBC is keen to stick in the direction of sending Scandicrap songs
which are generic pop songs (as the songs for You Decide are written in songwriting camps in Sweden and Denmark)
bland and in the middle of the road type songs
I thought the writing camps for You Decide are usually set up within Britain itself
with a high ratio of local talent taking part in the songwriting process
Iceland and San Marino are NOT from the big5
and noone is talking ’bout that group
She/he said and I quote “UK is for me the worst out of all the countries”
I wouldn’t say she’s referring to the big 5 only
And I also wrote for the last 20 years or so
Since 1997 there were so many horrible songs like Flying the flag
I don’t want to offend Brits or anything
Barei had a great song still listenable to today
she had a fight with the broadcaster about how to stage her own song
Spain has become notorious for bad staging
Alfred and Amaia this year are another prime example of just that
They would have found a way to screw up “Lo malo” as well because apparently
Staging has been our main issue for quite a while now
but didn’t even bother with the staging: it looked to me like we simply lowered the lights and that was it
No wonder Lithuania beat us to the punch with a similar-but-better-executed bid
And until someone in the Spanish delegation finally pays staging the attention it deserves
we will continue getting bogged down by it
Spain go all-in: either it’s a new classic or a total disaster
Very little room for boring stuff (although that’s slipped in too: sadly
Tu cancion had all the life sucked out of it by the time they got to Lisbon)
Their best is a gallery of Eurovision classics
and at the top of that list is Vuelve conmigo
I typically dislike big scream-y power ballads (and Spain has sent a LOT of them) but they find a way to make me like them
and she absolutely killed it.… Read more »
Interesting names for their national final shows: Mission Eurovision
Spain is not a very interesting Eurovision country
For me Spain’s golden period includes Pastora
which suspended water supplies to irrigation farmers last year
recorded a significant inflow of 21.615 million cubic metres (Mm3) during the past week
According to latest Dam Bulletin dated 10 February 2025
issued by Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata
this pushed the level of the largest dam in Namibia to 22.1%
“NamWater is pleased to report positive inflows into several of Namibia’s dams
contributing to improved water security for various regions across the country,” he said
significant inflows were recorded in the Swakoppoort
marking a positive trend in the country’s water storage levels
Among the notable increases were Swakoppoort Dam which received an inflow of 1.955 Mm3
bringing its storage level to 27.4% of full capacity
The Von Bach Dam recorded an increase of 0.840 Mm3 and now stands at 26.3%
NamWater said Friedenau Dam saw an inflow of 0.043 Mm3 and now has 46.8% capacity
while Otjivero Silt Dam received 0.079 Mm3
Naute Dam experienced an inflow of 4.093 Mm3
increasing its level to 31.9% and Oanob Dam recorded an inflow of 0.177 Mm3
particularly for the central area of Namibia
where water supply security remains a priority,” said Ndamanomhata
He further said transfers from Swakoppoort to Von Bach Dam
are expected to further support supply needs in Windhoek and surrounding areas
“NamWater urges the public to maintain responsible water consumption despite the positive developments,” he appealed
