How accessible is it?It's a little bit of a hike from the city center, reachable in about an hour, pending smooth connections. Depending on which beach you head to, you'll likely take the S-Bahn from Berlin city center, followed by a tram or bus connection to your preferred lido. If you're up for it, you can also cycle from the city center, but allow a bit longer. Seebad Friedrichshagen charges a daily rate of 5.50 EUR; the main Müggelsee lido is free (for now).
Can we go barefoot? The lake's golden sand is smoother than you might expect and is absolutely fine in bare feet; Berliners are great at keeping the beach free of glass and snack debris. If you're squeamish about lake matter, a pair of watershoes helps ease the transition between sand and water, but it's not necessary by any means. There's usually plenty of room on the beach to spread out, but don't set up camp too close to the curmudgeonly swans that strut the shoreline.
Anything special we should look for?The snacks at the beach are pretty standard fare (you're in Germany; a bratwurst is never far away), but stop in at the fantastic Thüringer Ritter in Köpenick for one of the best bratwurst around—it makes for the perfect post-sun (or pre-sun) snack.
If we’re thinking about going, what—and who—is this beach best for?Berlin summers get a little hotter than one might expect, and with a lack of AC in most apartments (including, perhaps, one's Airbnb), a trip to the lake is a time-honored (and completely necessary) way to cool down. It's not a place to spend a quick hour, given the effort to get out there, but it's a wonderful way to spend a free afternoon.
